Practice Squad Almost Set

Posted: September 5th, 2016 | Author: | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 235 Comments »

The Eagles have now filled 9 of the 10 spots on the practice squad.

The final spot is going to be interesting. You would think they would want a QB there. With only 2 on the roster, most teams keep a QB on the PS. But the Eagles also have WR Paul Turner and CB C.J. Smith out there. You do wonder if they both got claimed on waivers so the Eagles made other moves.

Let’s start with the outsiders. Andrew Bonnet was a FB/TE at North Dakota State, playing alongside Carson Wentz. Bonnet is 6-3, 251. He can block, but is also a good receiver. He caught 56 passes for 8 TDs at NDSU. He is a bit bigger than Trey Burton and is a bit better blocker, but has the same kind of overall skill set. He can line up at FB, H-back and TE. He can block or catch passes. He can play on STs. Burton is far and away the better athlete, but Bonnet isn’t a complete stiff.

Nice Brent Celek impression there, huh? Doug Pederson didn’t keep 4 TEs, but having Bonnet on the PS gives the Eagles a player to develop for the future and to help with practice.

Aaron Neary is listed at Center. He played OG in college and with Denver. He is 6-3, 301, which is good size for a C. He started his final 2 years at Eastern Washington and developed into a high level player (had some FCS All-American honors). Neary has some athletic ability, but won’t wow you with his agility. He plays with a real nasty streak, which we know Doug Pederson loves. The Eagles have had interest in Neary for a while. Howie Roseman talked to him on the phone prior to the draft.

Neary was mostly at LG this summer. He was better as a run blocker than pass protector. He does use his hands well, but must get stronger in the lower body so he can anchor better. He shows good awareness and is very good blocking at the second level. You can see why NFL teams think he can play C with that combination of skills.

Quentin Gause played well this summer for the Eagles on defense and STs. He’s worth developing. Gause always seemed to be in the right spot. You love LBs that are smart and instinctive. He generally tackled well and looked comfortable playing in traffic or out in space.

Cherry had a solid summer. He never really jumped off the screen. There were no wow plays. He played hard and got the job done, but that’s usually not enough to get a spot on the practice squad. The Eagles are trying to see if they can develop him. Cherry didn’t have a full offseason here. The coaches saw enough that they wanted to give him a chance to show what he can do over time. Joe Walker will be rehabbing his ACL injury so Cherry could have a shot to be the backup MLB in the future, but he’s got a long way to go to get to that point.

I covered the first 5 members of the practice squad yesterday.

*****

Doug Pederson said at his PC this morning that the team will add a third QB. He made it sound like the team would look for a young guy to put on the practice squad. We’ll have to wait and see how that goes.

The player I liked, Kevin Hogan, signed elsewhere yesterday. There are not great options right now, but I’m sure the Eagles have a couple of players they are interested in.

Oh yeah…Pederson also casually mentioned that Carson Wentz will start this weekend. Welcome to two days ago, Doug. I’m kidding, DP. We know you had to formally announce it. There weren’t any compelling stories behind the move. Just felt Wentz is ready.

*****

Peter King did an excellent job of breaking down how the Sam Bradford trade happened.

Howie played this situation perfectly. He asked for a high, but fair price. You don’t give away QBs this close to the season. At the same time, Howie didn’t try to gouge the Vikings. Rick Spielman talks in the piece about how some teams were making crazy trade demands. Howie negotiated in a fair, reasonable way and that helped to get the deal done.

Surprising that they didn’t leave room for Smith, Turner, and a QB. I’m thinking a guy like Cherry or Johnson gets cut if they make it through waivers.

  8. 8 Rob Jarratt said at 12:35 PM on September 5th, 2016:

Part of me could care less, and another part makes me wonder how a team with such a solid defense could be ranked that low. I guess PFT has to take all the variables associated with a new coach/system/QB/personnel and drop the Eagles to second from the bottom.

Upward and onward, say I. Fly Eagles, Fly.

  9. 9 Tumtum said at 1:25 PM on September 5th, 2016:

PFT is a football gossip site. This list is really just something to laugh at. Literally every single member of the national media is going to be blindsided by the defense this year. Lots of them will say they called it. PFT can’t be among that crowd.

  10. 10 ACViking said at 1:27 PM on September 5th, 2016:

    Tumtum —

1 year ago, you went decidedly against the prevailing opinion on this blog and predicted the Eagles would be, at best, a 7-9 or 8-8 team.

What do you project this year?

  11. 11 Tumtum said at 1:34 PM on September 5th, 2016:

Before the trade of Sam B I predicted 9-7 and division crown with the caveat that if Ryan Matthews was healthy in the right games we could add one. If he was unhealthy in the wrong games we could lose 1 and probably not win the division.

Now I really would be guessing more than ever. Just for fun I am going to keep the prediction the same and hope for a hell of a fun year I can enjoy with Carson.

If I am right again, I am saying now its just a lucky guess!

Pederson said they want to add a 3rd QB. Not sure whether before game or after or whether to active roster or PS. They can snatch a QB off PS and put him on roster so a guy like Kevin Hogan is still in play maybe.. May be waiting until Lane is suspended?

  28. 28 eagleyankfan said at 1:34 PM on September 5th, 2016:

I’m still no fan of Pederson. Doesn’t matter to me. I don’t have to like the coach or pseudo-gm. What I do like(maybe most of all) is the move to get Wentz and the move to start him. (right or wrong) I’m not a fan of “oh we better baby him for 2 to 3 years”. I like throwing caution into the wind and LOVE that he’s starting. I know, I know — Arod sat the bench and now he’s amazing. Problem for me is, how can anybody prove he wouldn’t have been as successful if he was thrown into the fire?(just an example, I know who he backed up)… It’s exciting times. An exciting QB. I liked Bradford. He was “bleh” to watch. Eagles weren’t going anywhere with him.(I know, I know – all 32 teams have a shot blah blah blah). It’s been set up as a transition year and now that train is 100%. I don’t think starting Chase would have accomplished anything. If Wentz is the person we all hope he is, he’ll take his lumps and learn from it(assuming he survives the weekly punishment :)) The future – is now.

Wentz. Hear me out here. TB is likely to be more reliant on the ground game. I think they’ll let Wentz air it out. He’ll get plenty of yards. He might throw a pick or 2 but typically in fantasy there’s not that big a penalty for interceptions.

The Eagles might do a lot of short passes/screens to RBs and TEs as part of their running game Andy Reid-style and Wentz will pick up points from that. I think they’ll try to minimize the number of shots he takes. Being mobile will help him avoid some hits too.

No idea how ready Wentz is for this opportunity, and I probably prefer Redshirting him for a year over starting him in his first game. but when we have no realistic chance of contending for a Super Bowl, the next best thing is hoping for an entertaining Season.
    ..
We love This sport because it is entertaining, and after sitting thru last season which was about as fun as getting your teeth pulled, I don’t have it in me to wait months for football season to start, only to be subjected to watching chase Daniel starting week 1. I can’t think of a more demoralizing way to open the season..
    ..
I do wonder how much the quality of opposition factored into whether or not Wentz was going to start week 1? It’s easy to make a case for waiting til the bye week to turn the team over to Carson, but doing so would be passing up an opportunity to allow the kid to get his feet wet against some of the most manageable defenses on our schedule (Browns, Bears, And Steelers defense probably isn’t anthing special either)
    ..
It’s probably easier to let him get his first experiece at home against crappy Browns with the entire stadium energized to back him up , then it is to wait after the bye week and make his debut on the road against the lions.
    .
Might as well łet him get the jitters out against the Brows, Bears and Steelers, because the next stretch of games will be much tougher for Wentz:
    @ Lions
@ skins in first division battle
Home in the Wentz vs. bradford bowl
@ Cowboys in a division War
    ..
might be wise to let him get 4 games under his belt before he has to enter that stretch of 3 BIG GAMES against two Rivals on the road and the return of Bradford and that scary Vikings defense
    ..
You can’t ask for a better two opponents to start your career against than the Browns and Bears defenses. Two of the most manageable opponents he will face all yeàr

I’m happy they’re going straight to Wentz out of the gate. I just thought he looked more like a professional QB than Chase did, admittedly in very limited snaps. Great job keeping his eyes down the field and that was with the o-line letting rushers get in his face almost every play. O-line hasn’t looked anywhere close to that bad since that game.

This post got passed over with the new thread:

Sit or start? Some very juicy analysis:

“But starting a high draft pick QB as a rookie generally led to a lower passer rating from him and worse win percentage in years 1, 2 and onward as compared to the QBs who are given the chance to develop and learn from the sideline.”

” But overall this tends to show that we are certainly not in the midst of a QB “era” where lots of great prospects are pouring into the NFL, forcing teams to start the less expensive and better option.”

“Also probably unsurprising, the players who were held out and groomed saw their passer rating significantly higher in their first year of action than those who started their rookie season. ”

“With very limited sample sizes, its evident that teams improve their win rate immediately by starting a high draft pick as a rookie. BUT, they don’t become winning teams that first year. They still average sub-.500 records.”

“For quarterbacks drafted in the first round of the draft over the last 4 years, we’ve seen them average their first start before their 4th game (3.7 games).”

“”I think this trend aligns very closely w/ head coach job security”, Joe noted. “Head coaches seem to have less time to develop players so they are playing into that trend by playing younger guys earlier when maybe they should be sitting them for a few more games. There’s a saying to college players coming to the NFL: ‘Everyone just got better except you’.””

” What we see is a downward trend in passer rating with when a QB takes his first start in the NFL.”

A corollary to these stats that should not go unsaid: teams that start rookie QBs generally have problems across the board.

A team that has the luxury of sitting a high draft pick is already in a better position.

  84. 84 Tumtum said at 3:07 PM on September 5th, 2016:

We did have that luxury until we traded Mr.B. I will say, I think the team surrounding Wentz is far superior to the one that RG3, Andrew Luck, Eli Manning, or Even Peyton Manning had.

  85. 85 deg0ey said at 4:05 PM on September 5th, 2016:

    I’d say that goes twofold:

    1. Worse teams are more likely to throw in a rookie QB in the hopes he can work some magic, turn things around and give the fans a reason to by tickets

and 2. Most QBs that are ‘ready’ to start right away are drafted early enough that they’re going to end up on a bad team almost by default.

  86. 86 ChoTime said at 6:24 PM on September 5th, 2016:

    Yes. Check this out:
the following 1st / 2nd round-drafted QBs who: a) won over 8 games their rookie season and b) have become consistent starters (5+ starts/yr in yrs 1-3+) for several years:

    “1. Ben Roethlisberger
    2. Matt Ryan
    3. Joe Flacco
    4. Andy Dalton
    5. Andrew Luck
    6. Robert Griffin (as we know, while Griffin qualifies by the outlined terms, he’s gone downhill in a major way since his rookie campaign)

    – That’s a VERY short list considering we’re talking 15 years of data.”
Luck had a crappy team, the others were pretty good, IIRC.

  87. 87 Ray888 said at 2:57 PM on September 5th, 2016:

Upset about Turner & Smith, especially given history of identifying competent players at both positions. When you find them, you keep them no matter if they’re UDFA or not. Were 11 OL & 6 DE’s necessary? Are Rowe and M. Smith going to be more productive this season?

  124. 124 Cafone said at 5:17 PM on September 5th, 2016:

    Yes.

  131. 131 Jarock said at 5:28 PM on September 5th, 2016:

I’ll forgive him the last one. Was trying to make a play and the corner (or safety) just made an outstanding play. I remember both he and Pederson indicated they thought he had a TD that play.

  132. 132 FairOaks said at 5:22 PM on September 5th, 2016:

Pretty sure he slid when running. He seemed a bit reckless in the pocket though, taking shots there when it may not have been really necessary, one of which injured the rib. I’m sure he could absorb D-1AA hits a lot more easily than NFL hits, and he will need to learn that. I’m guessing Chase Daniels will still get some substantial playing time this year.

  133. 133 A_T_G said at 7:14 PM on September 5th, 2016:

Reckless in the pocket is referred to as standing tall in the face of the rush if you don’t get hurt.

  134. 134 BlindChow said at 8:23 PM on September 5th, 2016:

Seriously, I’ve seen so many articles about him needing to “change the way he plays” with regards to his injury, like he was injured on a scramble.

Reminds me of all the talk about how Chip’s system was going to get his QB’s killed, when every single injury to an Eagles’ QB happened in the pocket (save for Old Man Vick’s hamstring pull).

  135. 135 FairOaks said at 10:01 PM on September 5th, 2016:

Yes, he definitely did that. But you want to pick your spots (3rd down), not do it consistently.

Granted, he did say that the slide when he ran may have been his first ever. So he is listening, and is trying to change those habits from college. The fractured rib or whatever it was may end up being a good reminder.

Here is an interesting read on why the Browns passed on Wentz.

    http://sports.yahoo.com/news/eagles-chance-show-browns-cleveland-000000544.html

The Browns wanted to see a QB put up big numbers against top tier opponents to feel comfortable with drafting them…kind of like Johnny Manziel, Brandon Weeden, Brady Quinn and Tim Couch. Wentz didn’t fit that mold so they passed. I would argue QB evaluation is not about stats and moneyball factors.

  195. 195 Fufina said at 7:06 PM on September 5th, 2016:

Look your ideal QB would be Andrew Luck – 4 year starter at a top conference program, with elite tools and excellent stats and tape. It is the reason why is the best prospect in a generation.

The fact Wentz lacks games and experience against elite schools is a significant concern that makes projecting him harder. Browns are in a very different situation however – they will have a top 2 pick in 2017 while the Eagles have no chance of that – so staying patient and picking up assets can work for them at a higher success rate.

However i do feel the fact that the Browns passed on Wentz almost guarantees he will be a HOF QB since fate seems to hate the Browns more than any other team in sport.

  196. 196 Dave said at 7:25 PM on September 5th, 2016:

Luck certainly is not looking like the best prospect in a generation but he’ll get a free pass for a few more years with blame being pinned on the coach, OC, and crappy offensive line.

  197. 197 Fufina said at 7:38 PM on September 5th, 2016:

Prospect does not mean best NFL player – but the one who at the time of the draft looked the most promising. Luck is the best QB prospect since Elway, and so far while he has been good he has not yet quite achieved that potential… but there is is still plenty of time and hopefully with a new GM and Coach they can actually build a contender around him.

  198. 198 Dave said at 7:45 PM on September 5th, 2016:

Their coach and GM both received 3 year extensions in January, through 2019. Nomchange imminent on that front.

Luck reminds me of Eli, chuck and duck throws into double and triple coverage.

  200. 200 FairOaks said at 9:55 PM on September 5th, 2016:

You think he was a better prospect than Peyton? Or Vick? Not so sure about that… but probably best since those two.

  201. 201 Anders said at 4:09 AM on September 6th, 2016:

Peyton was not the end and be all prospect coming out. Guys like Bradford and Stafford and Luck was better prospects coming out.

  202. 202 FairOaks said at 12:10 PM on September 6th, 2016:

You’re kidding right? He was a 1st overall pick, and would have been 1st overall the year before too but stayed in college for his senior season. Teams were waiting all year for him. The Ryan Leaf stuff was almost boredom from the press over the Manning-is-going-first storyline that had been played out all year and had gotten tiresome, even if still true.

The following was a 2011 article from a writer who had considered Manning the best QB prospect he had looked at, until Luck. (Looks like mostly based on better running ability, though was close in most other aspects.)

    http://bleacherreport.com/articles/818458-the-perfect-prospect-why-andrew-luck-is-better-than-peyton-manning

Manning was considered a once-in-a-generation prospect too. And he’s certainly in the argument for best of all time.

It is hard to argue with the Browns results, though.

    Wait, no it isn’t.

  205. 205 ChoTime said at 7:10 PM on September 5th, 2016:

Where are you getting “stats and moneyball” from this article?

“A sizable component of Cleveland’s doubt in Wentz came down to game film, a source close to the Browns’ decision to pass told Yahoo Sports.”
“When film rolled, evaluators were looking across the line of scrimmage in North Dakota State games and rarely saw opposing players with even fringe NFL talent.”
“Often, when evaluators review an NFL prospect at a lower level of college football, they want to see dominance.”
“He had some injury concerns from college, too.”

From the article, it sounds like they used the same eye test so many love, they just came to a different conclusion than Donohoe (and how many elite QBs has he discovered?)

People trust their eyes. Eyes lie. Math is a tool that can help correct against the biases all we humans fall prey to.

Most QBs, even highly-drafted ones, don’t pan out. Guys who play against poor competition and don’t blow them out of the water tend not to do so well.

Maybe Wentz will. Talent does what it can, genius does what it will.

  206. 206 Dave said at 7:23 PM on September 5th, 2016:

I guess we read it differently.

“the Browns didn’t see a franchise-changer who was consistently scorching a trail through his season. Often, when evaluators review an NFL prospect at a lower level of college football, they want to see dominance. And if that quarterback is going to be seriously considered for the No. 2 overall pick, they want to see something like Steve McNair at Alcorn State. Wentz was good, but he wasn’t that. He had some injury concerns from college, too.”

The reason Wentz didn’t scorch a trail is because he didn’t have to. NDS ran a ball control offense and had a great defense. Wentz was not asked to throw is 40 times per game, let alone 30. For comparison, Steve McNair ran a run and shoot style offense at Alcorn State and put up crazy numbers.

  207. 207 Anders said at 4:08 AM on September 6th, 2016:

and we all know QBs from run and shoot and Air Raid college offenses become such good QBs…

The Browns are stupid if their moneyball theory is scorching stats.

  208. 208 D3FB said at 9:00 AM on September 6th, 2016:

Their entire draft this year was basically college statistical heros.

  209. 209 Media Mike said at 7:16 PM on September 5th, 2016:

And they’re looking to tank for DeShaun Watson; dolts.

  210. 210 GermanEagle said at 7:22 PM on September 5th, 2016:

    F them!!

I really hope Wentz will shove it down their throats on Sunday for publicly criticising him. Make them pay!!!

  211. 211 RobNE said at 7:49 PM on September 5th, 2016:

Well it helps if you tank like they are doing bc they know they will have a great pick next year too. I hope they get called out for it or only philly teams do.

  212. 212 Dave said at 7:54 PM on September 5th, 2016:

That’s why I said they are using stats and moneyball to make decisions. They hired a known baseball moneyball guy Paul DePodesta to report directly to the owner. They clearly got rid of some good players this year for no other reason than to have more draft picks. Hinkie would be proud.

  213. 213 RobNE said at 8:11 PM on September 5th, 2016:

But I want to see the national media scream about it.

  214. 214 Media Mike said at 8:13 PM on September 5th, 2016:

That’ll come soon enough as they actually start losing game after game after game.

  217. 217 Anders said at 4:06 AM on September 6th, 2016:

  218. 218 Media Mike said at 7:57 PM on September 5th, 2016:

The best part is that the guy from whom they’re tanking, DeShaun Watson, will suck as an NFL quarterback.

  223. 223 Dave said at 8:28 PM on September 5th, 2016:

Dunno, but he does get to keep up with the current players when they come on the NFL Network when he is hosting. I can’t remember the last Eagle in the show. He does know Dawkins though.

Aside from being a Patriot apologist, he is one of the more level-headed hosts.

I am concerned about this opening game. I hope Pedo keeps things simple for him these first 3-4 games. And protects him. Let’s not have him taking 7 step drops 30+ times.
