Riding the Wave

Winning gets you noticed. Winning in dominant fashion and with a rookie QB gets you a lot of attention. Most of it is going to be good, but there are always those doubters, so sure they see flaws instead of strengths.

Carson Wentz is a hot button topic right now. Bart Scott called him fool’s gold prior to the Steelers game. Scott then had to change his mind. I don’t find Scott to be a compelling analyst so his opinion, either way, doesn’t mean anything to me. I have no issues with someone who has some doubts in regard to Wentz. He is only a rookie and we’re just 3 games into his career. Wentz could turn out to be the next Bobby Hoying or the next Tom Brady. We don’t know what the future holds.

All I ask of analysts is that they are fair and reasonable.

Wentz has been terrific this year. He has been accurate with his throws. He hasn’t turned the ball over. He has managed the game well, which can be especially tough for a rookie. You don’t see wasted timeouts and confused players on the field. Wentz is running the show and and getting his guys lined up where they need to be. Last week we saw him start to make plays. He ran for 10 yards on one play. He got outside the pocket and made the play to Darren Sproles for the 73-yard TD.

Wentz is playing well, rookie status aside. This is the best QB play the Eagles have had since Nick Foles in 2013, and might be better than even that. Foles got a ton of help from his supporting cast and the Chip Kelly Factor. You might have to go back to Michael Vick in 2010 to find QB play like this. While Wentz is good, let’s keep a bit of perspective. He’s not Top 5 in yards, TDs, rating, completion percentage or yards per attempt. Lions fans should be just as excited by the play of Matt Stafford as Eagles fans are with Wentz.

It feels great to finally have a young, franchise QB in place. That is the foundation of the entire organization. You either have a QB or you don’t. The Eagles do.

And right now Wentz is undefeated and has yet to throw a pick. He has made a combination of the right decisions and the right plays to get this team off to a great start. Enjoy the good times. This is the NFL and we know there will be some bad games. At some point, Wentz will throw an INT, miss a wide open receiver at a key moment or make a bonehead decision that hurts the team. That’s just reality. Joe Montana did it. Tom Brady has done it. Even Bubby Brister did it.

The naysayers will come out in force when that bad game does happen. “I told you Wentz isn’t good at _____________ .” Try not to go crazy. Wentz is a really good young player and looks like the real deal. Enjoy the stud QB. Don’t get caught up some criticism.

I bring this up because we already saw a bit of this. One of the Football Outsiders writers had some negative comments about Wentz and the Eagles offense. The Dink n’ Dunk label was thrown out there. Jimmy Bama responded in his own creative way. That led to a lot of back and forth between Eagles fans/writers and analytics people. In the end, I don’t think any opinions changed. But Jimmy did have a good time.

I have watched every play of Wentz’s young career and I can tell you he’s unlike any rookie QB I’ve ever seen. That doesn’t mean he’s the best or is headed to the Hall of Fame. It means he’s off to a great start and has a very bright future. Honestly, I’m glad we don’t know how things will turn out. The journey is more fun than the destination and we’re about to ride a really interesting wave with Wentz. We don’t know how long it will last or where it will go. It just feels like something pretty special.

*****

In my recent PE.com piece I compared this Eagles team to some other teams. There isn’t an Eagles team that feels quite like this one. Some of you did mention the 2004 Steelers as a comparison and that is pretty good.

PIT was 6-10 in 2003. That got them high in the draft and they took Ben Roethlisberger. They added some solid free agents as well. They also added Dick LeBeau as their DC. An injury to Tommy Maddox early in the year put Big Ben on the field earlier than expected. Ben went 13-0 as a starter and the team was 15-1 overall. They had the #1 defense in the league. You can see where there is some resemblance to this point.

At the same time, that team had Bill Cowher as coach and there was a lot of overall stability. The 2016 Eagles have a rookie HC and QB. That’s part of what makes the 3-0 start so unusual.

In the end, none of this matters. This team is creating their own story and doing a great job of that.

  7. 7 Media Mike said at 9:16 PM on October 1st, 2016:

60 minutes of game tape is often the best evidence one needs. Plus when these d-bag denigrate things that matter by calling them “counting stats”, it enrages me.

  8. 8 ChoTime said at 9:21 PM on October 1st, 2016:

I disagree, game tape (especially all-22) is part of the whole of evaluating a player. Lots of players look good but are actually not really helping the team. Fans NEVER pick up on it unless they analyze the numbers. Note that I am not saying Wentz is not helping the team. He’s playing great and _no one_ is disputing that!

The numbers are essential for helping overcome the perceptual biases we all have. They also can serve, at least, as something better than–is too, is not, is too, is not!

  9. 9 Media Mike said at 9:26 PM on October 1st, 2016:

Those numbers and important as context for sure, but need to be secondary in nature to the actual act of playing the game.

Any my complaint is not with indisputable numbers such as completion %, QB rating, yards, TD passes, INTs, etc. rather with attempts to skew legitimate numbers by using mumbo jumbo invented formulas that are as accurate as what one would have generated using a roll of the dice.

  10. 10 Dave said at 9:46 PM on October 1st, 2016:

Statistics are wonderful in baseball where there are no hidden variables. They also have their place in football. However, without knowing the play call, read progressions, discussions in the huddle, checks at the line of scrimmage, and other possible variables, many modern analytics are based on educated guesses within the formulas.

  11. 11 Media Mike said at 9:48 PM on October 1st, 2016:

But even in baseball, the analytic type stats are useless. I’ve yet to see anybody with a game with a WAR.

  12. 12 Dave said at 9:52 PM on October 1st, 2016:

They’re either used by the team for determining contracts, free agency acquisitions, trades and draft picks or used by fans and the media as after-the-fact fodder on whose great and who sucks.

  13. 13 Gary Barnes said at 8:09 AM on October 2nd, 2016:

Totally disagree. WAR helps explain the value of each player and thus their production. Watching the game can lead to many false conclusions as human eyes are very flawed judges: we see what we want to see and what reinforces our previous conclusions in many cases.

  14. 14 ChoTime said at 1:37 PM on October 2nd, 2016:

I have a bigger problem with the numbers you cite. Why? Because what do they really show you?

Bad QBs can, and often do, have high completion % by throwing to RBs. Good QBs might have lower completion % because they’re taking more challenging shots that lead to scores.

Good QBs might throw lots of interceptions if their team sucks and they are always playing catch up. Bad QBs who screw over their team sometimes end up with lots of yards because they are throwing a lot, trying to make up for mistakes they made.

The advanced stats try to take these things in context.

An 8 yard pass is great if you only need 8 yards. A 14 yard pass when you need 15 is still a failure, and it doesn’t show skill–the defense gave it to you. A 100% completion rate on RB dumpoffs on 3rd and 10 shows no skill.

The decent advanced stats aren’t random, and they’re way better than TV announcers or average fan posts.

  15. 15 laeagle said at 9:40 PM on October 1st, 2016:

I think the biggest problem is when you take either without the other. For example, from a pure numbers perspective, Wentz is only “dinking and dunking”. But that’s not the quarterback I see play. I see a guy taking shots, with receivers occasionally missing. Do the stats take into account attempts? If not, that’s indicative of the problem with stats in general. “YOU ARE THE TALLEST PERSON EVER” if I’m measuring your ankles only. Most statistical analysis can be given additional context or meaning when you fold in the things that aren’t measured, and unfortunately, you can’t always measure everything at the same time, or at the very least, there’s a limit on the number of data axes you can measure simultaneously. I think a lot of statistical analysis ends up looking like someone trying to work their way through a 3d world using a line graph.

  16. 16 Dave said at 9:56 PM on October 1st, 2016:

They also don’t take into account “taking what the defense gives you” approach that good coaches take. If the underneath stuff is open for an easy 4 yards per play, you take it. If you have 1 on 1 coverage on a deep out, then you take the chance. Dink and dunk is better than throwing the deep ball into double coverage. Statistics also don’t take into account guys like ODB, Julio Jones, Dex, Megatron, etc. It’s much easier to throw deep passes when you feel your receiver is always going to come down with it over multiple defenders.

  17. 17 laeagle said at 9:59 PM on October 1st, 2016:

NO. YOU GO FOR THE BOMB ON EVERY PLAY NO MATTER WHAT THE DEFENSE GIVES YOU OR THE COACH CALLS BECAUSE OTHERWISE YOU ARE A BAD QUARTERBACK

  18. 18 A Roy said at 10:44 PM on October 1st, 2016:

I think YAK really matters. You can throw a 10 yard pass off target enough that the receiver gets no YAK or you can throw a 5 yd pass perfectly to allow the receiver to get an additional 10. Statistics can be meaningless sometimes. Except for Big Tuna’s ultimate stat.

  20. 20 Gary Barnes said at 8:12 AM on October 2nd, 2016:

The bigger flaw is with the theory dink & dunk is a bad approach to offense. As long as a team is moving the ball, getting 1st downs and eventually scoring points dink & dunk can be very effective. It minimizes turnovers etc. Instead of faulting stats or game watchers, the theory itself should be challenged.

  25. 25 ChoTime said at 9:26 PM on October 1st, 2016:

I think criticizing Wentz at this point is ridiculous, but the Kempski-Kacsmar exchange was hardly illuminating. The numbers Kacsmar referred to are correct–Wentz is throwing mostly short passes. It IS a dink-and-dunk offense. You add up the total and divide by the number of passes… this is the number you get.

Yes, Wentz has also shown the ability to throw deep too, which is great! It doesn’t change that the average passes are shorter than that of the other QBs in the league. Lots of great offenses have been built around short passes with the occasional scoring shot.

Look at the chart I posted earlier showing “air yards.” I see no correlation between how far they throw and how good the QB is.

It’s a problem throughout society. Someone takes an intro to statistics class, or becomes a black belt, and thinks that every measurement imparts knowledge. 38. 38 Duracell said at 11:02 PM on October 1st, 2016:

I think the difference is that Wentz has shown he can make all the throws, and is quite able to throw accurate intermediate and deep balls when it is the right play. Many dink and dunk quarterbacks play that way out of necessity, but I don’t see that with Carson.

  39. 39 ChoTime said at 12:50 PM on October 2nd, 2016:

I don’t even know how you can tell. Here is the infamous chart:

    http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stat-analysis/2016/quarterbacks-and-progression-air-yards

This article is completely inoffensive and I don’t see why anyone would think it’s denigrating Wentz. I don’t tweet, so maybe there is more to it. I saw that Kacsmar admitted he doesn’t like dink and dunk. I say, who cares, but secondarily, _DVOA (the stat used by the site Kacsmar writes for) favors dink and dunk_. This has been a consistent complaint, since it was founded by a Patriots fan when Brady was having so much success with this style. It may also be part of the reason why the Eagles under Reid were always near the top of their stat. Although it could just be that those were usually two of the best teams during that era, too.

As you can see, Sam Bradford is a dinker. Yet he has a great arm. So does Stafford. Brady is pretty low on air yards, but he sure was slinging it fine when Randy Moss was on the team. Scroll up the list and you’ll see Russell Wilson, sometimes thought of as a “point guard,” has a high air-yards.

And again, I see great QBs all over the place here. Maybe not at the very bottom, as I don’t think Bradford or Alex Smith are great.

It’s just 3 games, anyway. The main thing is that Wentz is being extremely effective at the game plan. It’s not like the other teams aren’t trying to stop him!

  45. 45 Media Mike said at 6:17 AM on October 2nd, 2016:

  46. 46 D3FB said at 1:12 PM on October 2nd, 2016:

Which coach is most likely to be the first one canned this year? I asked this 3 weeks ago and the consensus then was Fisher, who has won 2 in a row since and has his team in first place at 2-1.

    A) Rex Ryan, Entertaining but lousy coach
    B) Chuck Pagano, Has one of best QBs in NFL, still can’t win diddly-poo.
    C) Gus Bradley, The wheels on the bus come off, come off.
    D) John Fox, Seriously, he’s still coaching?
    E) Jeff Fisher, Now in 21st year of failing to develop a QB. Has learned nothing.
    F) Mike McCoy, who?
    G) Jay Gruden, Its still a Dan Snyder team. Hope he hires Chip Kelly next.
    H) Other – who then?

Terrell Pryior is a beast. Makes me so mad that we worked him out a couple times but chip refused to sigń him… Unlike Tebow, he was willing to play other positions, and now that He has had some time to learn the WR positon, he is becoming a big problem for opposing corners, lighting up Josh Norman

Compton down with an injury. Skins LB corp ISNT any good to begin with, they can’t afford to be losing starting LB’s.
    .
They are already playing without their starting Center, lost safety DEangelo Hall for the season, Breeland is banged up. Think they are also playing with a backup Guard.
    .l
Our TE’s and RB vs skins Safeties and LB can cause a lot of problems for the skins in the passing game…. Giants LB and Safeties should also struggle to match up against us

    ..
The Only match up that concerns me in that game is the big play ability of Marvin Jones/Stafford.

He was lucky that the clock stopped and Crowell was able to get a breather, and Hue still took him out the game so his backüp could proceed to fumble the ball away for the second drive in a row… If you are going to take Crowell out of the game THROW THE DAMN BALL. And stop letting anyone other than Crowell carry the ball you dope! The skins are practically begging the Browns to beat them

    14-0
    ..
3rd down sack, taken away because someone in pads who refused to go down got pushed in his back, dallas gifted a 1st down, go on to score 7-14 San Fran
    .,
If that wasn’t enough for the Refs, the very next drive, they bail out dallas defense on 3rd down ignoring what was a blatant no call holding penalty on the WR that was thrown to for what should have been a first down, Dallas was gifted the ball back, and instead of going into the half down 14-0, it’s now a tied game

Nothing complicated or terrible innovative either.

When you start a running back at QB; it can’t work forever. They really should have signed a street free agent QB given they had an extra 3 days to prepare.

  343. 343 Sean Stott said at 8:15 PM on October 2nd, 2016:

Don’t look now, but the NFC East is by far the strongest division in the NFC

  344. 344 Media Mike said at 8:17 PM on October 2nd, 2016:

Until the unworthy bums who aren’t the Eagles being to pile up losses to the Eagles and their other opponents. Minnesota will get a nice trend started Monday night.

  345. 345 SteveH said at 8:26 PM on October 2nd, 2016:

How in the holy hell did Arizona lose to the Rams??? What in the everloving fuck is going on this year?

  346. 346 Sean Stott said at 8:27 PM on October 2nd, 2016:

I keep saying it but it bears repeating – just because teams were good last year doesn’t mean they’ll be good this year. And vise versa.

  347. 347 SteveH said at 8:29 PM on October 2nd, 2016:

That’s always true, but most of the time teams are not DRASTICALLY better or worse unless there’s some kind of major roster/coaching overhaul. The Panthers and the Cards are returning basically the same teams, except you could argue the Panthers are even better now with Kelvin Benjamin healthy.

  348. 348 Media Mike said at 8:30 PM on October 2nd, 2016:

Benjamin is actually not that good. Drops a ton of passes and gets most of his stats at garbage time.

  349. 349 Will Ft. Daft Punk said at 8:31 PM on October 2nd, 2016:

Panthers have holes in the secondary. And no way was Cam going to keep playing at that level he did last year.

Maybe teams have just figured out the Cardinals.

  350. 350 Media Mike said at 8:32 PM on October 2nd, 2016:

I think teams have figured out the Panthers. And mega-reaching for guys like Bradbury in the 2nd round, when they’re 7th round talents isn’t going to make up for Norman being gone.

  351. 351 SteveH said at 8:33 PM on October 2nd, 2016:

Cam doesn’t need to be an MVP for the Panthers to win, but he’s playing like junk the last couple of games.

I refuse to believe that losing Josh Norman is causing that whole team to tailspin.

  352. 352 Media Mike said at 8:35 PM on October 2nd, 2016:

A significant level of Cam’s success was done via gimmick. Wade Phillips laid out the blueprint to defeat those gimmicks. Just like with wildcat, the league caught up to Carolina’s tricks.

  353. 353 SteveH said at 8:36 PM on October 2nd, 2016:

I don’t know if I completely buy that but Carolina is definitely a team looking for answers right now.

  354. 354 Media Mike said at 8:37 PM on October 2nd, 2016:

Here’s an answer for them; maybe you should have based your system on something other than fool’s gold QB runs.

  355. 355 SteveH said at 8:38 PM on October 2nd, 2016:

Well it did get them to a super bowl, I’m not sure it was a complete failure.

  356. 356 Will Ft. Daft Punk said at 8:39 PM on October 2nd, 2016:

Their OL is pretty bad this year.

  357. 357 Media Mike said at 8:40 PM on October 2nd, 2016:

It was last year too, but they were max protecting and teams called foolish Ds against it. Wade Phillips laid down a nice blueprint.

  358. 358 Media Mike said at 8:39 PM on October 2nd, 2016:

And Kaep got the Niners to one taking teams by surprise as well; that also ended poorly because he never learned how to be a real QB.

  359. 359 Will Ft. Daft Punk said at 8:35 PM on October 2nd, 2016:

LOL. Julio put up 300 yards on them. No way that happens vs Norman. The guy isnt Deion, but he is really good. They also lost 2 other vets in the secondary have two rookie CBs starting.

And yes, Cam does have to play at a high level to carry that offense.

  360. 360 Sean Stott said at 8:36 PM on October 2nd, 2016:

Holy crap Julio put up 300 yards? I thought the announcers misspoke when I glanced at that channel and heard that stat. Holy shit.

  361. 361 SteveH said at 8:37 PM on October 2nd, 2016:

Biggest receiving game since Calvin Johnson had 329 a few years ago. It seems unreal that 1 player could pile up that many yards but here we are.

  362. 362 Media Mike said at 8:37 PM on October 2nd, 2016:

You know like 290 of those were due to Coleman missed tackles.

  363. 363 John Galt said at 9:57 PM on October 2nd, 2016:

Carson Palmer just throws too many picks

  364. 364 SteveH said at 8:31 PM on October 2nd, 2016:

Trevor Siemian getting hurt really fucked a few promising fanduel rosters.

  365. 365 SteveH said at 8:39 PM on October 2nd, 2016:

haha, I need Sammie Coates to have a big game and BAM right off the bat.

  366. 366 Mitchell said at 8:40 PM on October 2nd, 2016:

    Sammie Coates sighting…. again.

  367. 367 Media Mike said at 8:41 PM on October 2nd, 2016:

He’ll drop one again soon to remind us who he really is.

  368. 368 Mitchell said at 8:42 PM on October 2nd, 2016:

I’ll take a couple drops a game for a couple 40 yards plays.

  369. 369 Media Mike said at 8:43 PM on October 2nd, 2016:

    I’ll take zero drops!

  370. 370 SteveH said at 8:44 PM on October 2nd, 2016:

You can’t have it, we have Jordan Mathews.

  371. 371 Media Mike said at 8:45 PM on October 2nd, 2016:

I’ll brutalize him as well for the drops!

  372. 372 Media Mike said at 8:48 PM on October 2nd, 2016:

Ha, he almost just died on the end around.

  373. 373 SteveH said at 8:49 PM on October 2nd, 2016:

Steelers already more points on the Chiefs than they had on us all last week.

  374. 374 CrackSammich said at 8:56 PM on October 2nd, 2016:

    what.

  375. 375 SteveH said at 8:56 PM on October 2nd, 2016:

    Alex Smith. *shrug*

  376. 376 SteveH said at 8:57 PM on October 2nd, 2016:

The bigger the Steelers rout the better our win looks last week.

  377. 377 Will Ft. Daft Punk said at 8:59 PM on October 2nd, 2016:

Nah. People will just say look what happens when the Steelers have Bell

  378. 378 DJH said at 9:12 PM on October 2nd, 2016:

Nope. People will say they just had a bad game. Commentators already saying “Steelers defense looks much better this week” and “doing things they didn’t do last week” yadda yadda yadda.

So we’ll be hearing about that and Dak all week.

Eagles just need to shut out the media and fans and just focus on a one week season.

  379. 379 Media Mike said at 9:13 PM on October 2nd, 2016:

This level of disrespect from the nation media and other fan bases is what gets people in visiting team gear beaten up in parking lots.

  380. 380 SteveH said at 9:16 PM on October 2nd, 2016:

I think people with issues of aggression and behavioral control is what gets people beat up in parking lots.

  381. 381 Media Mike said at 9:16 PM on October 2nd, 2016:

Yeah, shame those people choose to drive down here and start problems when they should know better.

  382. 382 Dragon_Eagle said at 9:24 PM on October 2nd, 2016:

Yeah, but I liked watching the Steelers fans wandering about in misery all last week.

  383. 383 SteveH said at 9:10 PM on October 2nd, 2016:

This Antonio Brown dude is pretty good.

  384. 384 Media Mike said at 9:11 PM on October 2nd, 2016:

Just a bit. Although I might suggest he get a tad more nonsensical if he’s going to get 15 yard flags anyway.

  385. 385 Will Ft. Daft Punk said at 9:12 PM on October 2nd, 2016:

Maybe trying to avoid another fine

  386. 386 Media Mike said at 9:13 PM on October 2nd, 2016:

He said fines didn’t matter to a boss, so I want some entertainment. Like the old Chad Johnson stuff.

  387. 387 Will Ft. Daft Punk said at 9:18 PM on October 2nd, 2016:

Cant be giving all the strip club money to Goddell’s yearly bonus.

  388. 388 CrackSammich said at 9:11 PM on October 2nd, 2016:

This is so bad they should look into match fixing.

  389. 389 SteveH said at 9:16 PM on October 2nd, 2016:

I’d rather the investigate the officiating crew from the Cowboys game. That game totally turned on a series of awful calls/non-calls.

  390. 390 The original AG said at 9:23 PM on October 2nd, 2016:

I saw this coming. I said earlier today that Pitt was going to drop 40 points on them.

  391. 391 bushisamoron said at 9:47 PM on October 2nd, 2016:

While Wentz has certainly started well, what is most exciting about him is that it appears that the Eagles have a long term plan for the position. We all know the importance of the position and the lack of franchise QB’s in the league that essentially disqualify 15 or so teams every year from truly competing for the super bowl.

  392. 392 James said at 10:32 PM on October 2nd, 2016:

How many steelers have come back from injury that their fans/media say they so casually missed last week?

  393. 393 A_T_G said at 11:02 PM on October 2nd, 2016:

I believe it was reported we actually played against the Stealers, a Chinese import version featuring Big Bend and Ann-Tony O. Brown, while the real team remained in Pittsburgh.

  394. 394 Froogal Stoodent said at 2:28 PM on October 3rd, 2016:

    LOL! That was good!

  395. 395 HawaiianEagle said at 10:45 PM on October 2nd, 2016:

NFL says Dak and boys rally to “blast” 49rs… Not sure I’d use rally and blast when describing that win vs 49rs

  396. 396 ChoTime said at 1:15 AM on October 3rd, 2016:

    Is it a dynamite reference?

  397. 397 HawaiianEagle said at 1:17 AM on October 3rd, 2016:

Hmmm.. that would be the only explosive thing from that game.

  398. 398 mtn_green said at 10:53 PM on October 2nd, 2016:

    How good is eagles defense.

  399. 399 The original AG said at 10:56 PM on October 2nd, 2016:

Yup, just like Andy Reid to be on the 3 yard line and pass 4 straight times.

  400. 400 DJH said at 10:58 PM on October 2nd, 2016:

And Alex Smith is a decent runner. A little creativity goes a long way.
