The Calm Before the Storm

Sunday could be a wild day. The 1:00 games mean nothing to the Eagles, but once 4:25 gets here, it will be a pressure-packed three hours. It will be hard not to live and die on every play of the Eagles and Vikings games.

I’m doing my best to talk myself into being calm. The logic goes something like this.

I’d love to see the Eagles win because I want this season to keep going. I know this is a flawed team. I know this season has been more than a little painful. There are times when it felt like something out of Dante’s Inferno.

“You can have your Super Bowl, but then Dak Prescott and Jerry Jones are going to force feed you a Subway Steak & Cheese.”

NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Still, every chance I get to see Fletcher Cox or Zach Ertz in action is a good thing. I’d love to see what this team could do in the postseason. They are hot. We saw flawed Eagles teams get hot in 2006 and 2008 and win playoff games.

It would also be magical to see the Eagles steal a playoff spot from the Vikings. They’ve been very generous in recent year, trading for Sam Bradford and then completely falling apart in the NFC title game last season. Having them cough up a playoff spot this year would just be glorious.

The flip side of things is that I am okay with this season coming to an end. There hasn’t been a whole lot of fun this year. Wins bring relief more than joy. There are so many injuries that it is hard to get into a rhythm with this team.

“I want to see young talent like Derek Barnett, Mack Hollins, Corey Clement and Sidney Jones. Maybe they’ll develop into key starters.” Oops.

“I want to see how this deep, talented DL can do. Cox, Jernigan, Graham, Barnett, Bennett, Long, Ngata, and Sweat give the Eagles a ton of depth.” Oops.

“I want to see the best secondary in a long time. Darby, Mills and Jones all looked great in the summer. Jenkins, McLeod and Graham give the team a trio of good safeties. Then you have young guys like Douglas and Maddox who give this team great depth.” Oops.

The offense and defense have both been disappointing. There isn’t any thing you can point to and feel great about it.

It wouldn’t break my heart to see this come to an end.

As long as the Eagles do their part, I can live with whatever else happens.

10 years ago the Eagles needed a lot of help on the final day of the regular season. Good story here.
