Options are Important
Posted: February 17th, 2020 | Author: Tommy Lawlor | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | Comments Off on Options are ImportantThe Eagles need CB help. I don’t think anyone would dispute that after the past two years. Ronald Darby won’t be brought back. I’m guessing Jalen Mills will re-sign, but he isn’t meant to be a number one corner. The Eagles have to find that guy in the offseason.
Byron Jones is the top free agent. He’s big and athletic and talented. But he’s only got two INTs in five seasons, and those came when he played safety. Chris Harris is another possibility, but he’ll turn 31 in June and he’s at his best in the slot.
There are some good CBs in the draft. Still, do you count on them coming in and starting right away? Do you expect them to play at a high level?
Howie Roseman is a creative GM. He won’t leave any stone unturned when it comes to finding talent. That’s important with the Eagles need for CB help. They need options.
Lions have spoken with multiple teams about a potential trade for Pro Bowl CB Darius Slay, per sources. Any team that trades for Slay would have to compensate Detroit and Slay with a new deal. Other teams believe Slay will be traded this off-season, but Lions adamant on value.

Slay is 29. He’s picked off 19 passes over the past six seasons. He’s no longer a shutdown CB, but he’s better than anything the Eagles currently have. Slay wants a new deal and that’s one reason he’s available. Is he the right answer?

Bouye will be 29 this summer and isn’t trending in the right direction after playing at a very high level in 2016 and 2017. Still, he would give the Eagles another option.
There is no perfect move here so far as I can see. There is no player to just break the bank for.
The key here is for the Eagles to have some options. Do you remember the 2015 offseason? The Eagles were desperate for a corner. The top player on the market was Byron Maxwell and the Eagles went and got him. Maxwell didn’t play well in Philly, but he did end up having some value. Roseman was able to trade him to Miami so the Eagles could move up in the draft.
The Eagles don’t want another Byron Maxwell situation.
Roseman, Jim Schwartz and the pro scouts have to work together to find the right choice, whether that is throwing a lot of money at Jones or trading for a veteran corner. The Eagles should draft one, but I think they need to add a veteran as well.
It is also important for the team to make decisions on what to do with Avonte Maddox, Sidney Jones and Cre’Von LeBlanc. I think they would be mistaken to look at them as young CBs that will compete for jobs. You need to have a specific role projected for them. Those decisions will affect your plans for the offseason.
The Eagles have some tough decisions to make. Let’s hope they get them right.

#Redskins are releasing CB Josh Norman, source says. Intriguing situation to watch, as he now has time to find his new team ahead of free agency.

Norman is not a good player anymore.

Jimmy’s interesting take on Eagles press conferences and how the beat writers battle to have their questions heard.
Some of Jimmy’s finest work.
Although not everyone was pleased.
I will have no further comment on this matter. pic.twitter.com/8YoMpvXYDD

I’ve been busy doing draft research. This looks like a deep, talented class.
I’m excited to see what the Eagles do in April.
