Eagles Add Bradberry

Howie Roseman loves to point out that roster building is a continuous process. This is generally a talking point of his when the media starts asking a roster weakness, like cornerback or safety. Howie isn’t just saying this in a meaningless way. He actually backs up this idea with action.

I had my doubts about this happening. More than a few teams need CB help so I thought there might be a small bidding war for Bradberry. Not that he’s elite or anything close, but he was the best guy on the market so that gave him some leverage. I guess the market was softer than I expected. The report said the Eagles paid him $10M, but the real number will likely be lower.

Bradberry gets to play for a good team and in a scheme that fits him. The Giants cutting him in May didn’t do him any favors. If Bradberry can have a good year, he’ll be able to hit free agency next March and get one final good deal. This will be a huge year for him.

I wrote the other day about the Eagles defense having a good chance for improvement this season. That feels even more true now.

The Eagles added serious talent at each level of the defense.

DL – Jordan Davis, Brandon Graham (coming back from injury)

LB – Haason Reddick, Nakobe Dean, Kyzir White

DB – James Bradberry

Bradberry gives the Eagles a CB with good size and length. He has outstanding ball skills. As you can see from the stat above, Bradberry and Slay give the Eagles a pair of CBs who can really play the ball. That is critical with the way Jonathan Gannon wants to play defense.

The Eagles still aren’t great at safety, but the overall roster looks really good now.

I went and looked at the rosters.

I think Jimmy is right. The Eagles do have a better overall roster.

Plenty of people gave him a hard time for the QB comment. Jimmy wasn’t downplaying the importance of QB. As much as I love to give him a hard time, Jimmy knows that QB is the key to a football team. We don’t know how things will play out, but as of right now, Dak Prescott is a better QB than Jalen Hurts and that’s critical.

It also doesn’t change the fact that the Cowboys lost talent this year and the Eagles got better.

Having the better roster on paper doesn’t mean anything by itself. We’ve seen the Eagles turn great offseasons into mediocre results before. Still, the roster sure looks a lot better than it did in mid-January. That gives the Eagles a much better chance to win the division and be a real contender this year.

The Eagles really struggled with good teams last year. That should change this season, with more experience and an improved roster.

A few people have speculated about Avonte Maddox moving to safety. The Eagles have Josiah Scott and Zech McPhearson available in the slot.

This is possible, but I would rather leave Maddox in the slot. He showed real promise last year. Let him stay there and develop. Nickel corner has become a really key position on good defenses these days. Let him stay put and get better.

The Eagles could still make a move at safety.

Bates is a true centerfielder type in my eyes. I’m not sure if that’s what Gannon wants. But Bates is an excellent young player.

Howie doesn’t need to rush and make a move. He can keep his options open and see what happens. If the right player is available at the right price, go get him.

McCreight was a personnel executive with the Eagles until a couple of weeks back. Interesting to get his opinion like this.

Watkins won’t be a volume receiver, but he could be a key playmaker for the Eagles.

This offense could be a lot of fun.
