Day 3 Update

2 – LB Mychal Kendricks – 5-11, 240 – Cal
2 – DE Vinny Curry – 6-3, 266 – Marshall
3 – QB Nick Foles – 6-5, 243 – Arizona
4 – CB/RS Brandon Boykin – 5-9, 183
5 – OT Dennis Kelly – 6-8, 321 – Purdue

Here is the scouting report on Boykin.
* * * * *
Didn’t have time to write a report on Dennis Kelly, nor did I watch enough tape to know him super thoroughly. Here is some info:
Kelly played LT in the game I watched. Surprisingly athletic. Purdue had him pull to the inside on a run play and he made a good block on an ILB. Moves well laterally, which is critical for Mudd’s system. Pretty good knee bender for someone as tall as he is. Good effort on run blocks.
Good showing at his Pro Day. From Gil Brandt: Kelly ran the 40 in 5.33 and 5.41 seconds (he had a 1.82-second 10-yard split). He had a 27-inch vertical, 8-foot-8 broad jump, 4.91-second short shuttle and 7.73 three-cone, and performed 30 strength lifts. Kelly also has 33 1/2-inch arms. Two-time All-Big Ten honorable mention player.
I think Kelly is the kind of bit OT and athletic guy that Howard Mudd will enjoy working with. I don’t know if he can play LT in the NFL, but in our system he’s got a chance. Could be a good RT.
I trust Howard Mudd when it comes to finding OL.

Potential areas of need.
TE – if the Eagles truly want to do a lot more 2-TE sets, they will need to add another TE
SS – someone who can fight for a job
RB – I don’t know that the team is focused on adding a rookie, but if the right guy is available, they could go for him
Who is left?
TE: Ladarius Green, Orson Charles, Taylor Thompson, Derek Carrier
S: Antonio Allen, George Iloka, Janzen Jackson, Markelle Martin, Duke Iheancho, Justin Bethel, Winston Guy, Jordan Bernstine
RB: Chris Polk, Chris Rainey, Vick Ballard, Cyrus Gray, Lennon Creer
Some very interesting guys are slipping that could fit other areas for us. Will be interesting to see if we double up with a CB or LB or something like that. Could still add a OG prospect.
Green, Charles and Rainey all gone I think
You got to believe that a RB will be taken at some point unless they think Haveli can be that big change of pace back. Don’t think he could be counted on to replace shady god forbid he goes down. WR then looks like the next viable position next
Justin Forsett still out there as a FA. Wouldn’t be surprised at all if Eagles sign him.
Vick Ballard is sneaky quick and powerful… watched him rip through Auburn this last season…
Tommy,
You forgot Eagles need a WR if we ever want to be rid of Chad Hall.
Sloppy. I did leave off WR. My fault.
I’d like one of the safeties…
Antonio Allen
George Iloka
If they don’t take a WR or Safety in 6 I gotta think Plax and Yerimiah Bell are in play.
Agree
There’s still a chance for a Pats trade… they got 3 picks when the Packers moved up.
AR and BB still have to make the obligatory trade.
I’m curious why do we think we need more competition at SS when Jarrett was a 2nd rounder and Coleman has shown that he’s at least serviceable as a starter for now. Coleman’s lack of elite athleticism makes him a more natural fit at SS than FS where he struggled to open the year last year. Allen is the one who played more poorly and is coming off the injury. Don’t we think we should look at a guy who could push him, like Martin?
Because people are impatient and they want an all star at every position. Nate Allen is good and Jarret was a reach. That’s not his fault. Give him a full offseason and a good coach to work with. I think he will turn heads this year. I don’t see how adding a 5th or 6th round pick will improve the safety position. These are special teams players. We need a vet safety, yes. Not another 20 y/o.
I’m off to the pub to celebrate.
Bottoms up, T_S_O_P!
You still in Leicester? Which public house do you frequent?
The Baker’s in Blaby. Where are you?
Usually The Western off Narborough Road, it’s a Steamin Billy Brewery, not an Everards, but some decent brews!
know it and have frequented it, used to live 10 minutes walk from it
Have fun my friend.
I was late. Some guy named Lawlor on Eagles Live. I don’t know what all the fuss is.
Did we pick someone from a AA or A college program yet?
I don’t think so, but Dennard is still on the board and he will most like be in AA at least a couple of times.
Nice! lol
Well played, Razz.
I know you still need to look at him a bit more, but what are the concerns with Dennis Kelly. I trust Mudd to get the most out of his players that he can, but here is a reason he was not a highly rated player.
Loving this draft. Happy Boykins fell to us in 4th. Really need a RB though, of shady goes down we are in trouble.
Janzen Jackson, please. Then its a perfect draft except for some QB.
RE: The Red Zone
T-LAW:
The Eagles have added what seems to be a lot of quality young players to the defensive side.
But I’m disappointed the Eagles haven’t take a stab at a tall receiver like UA’s Juron Criner [Rd 5 – Raiders] or UM’s Tommy Streeter — especially when the choice was someone whom his coaches benched because of personal conflicts (apparently) and seems like he’d be there later.
Maybe Junior Hemingway — not a tall guy but, as you’ve written, solid and very quick — is the man.
Or your guy, MSU’s BJ Cunningham.
You and I are both hoping for a WR with size. Height good, but at least give me a big frame (220 lbs).
They took McNutt, 6’3″, 216 lb WR. Good size, big frame and all. Your cup of tea?
So who do people want with our last 3 picks? I’d like some of these guys…
WR: Rishard Matthews or Dwight Jones
S: Antonio Allen or Duke Ihenacho
LB: Travis Lewis or Danny Trevathan
Didn’t Dwight Jones not respond well to coaching at the Senior Bowl (aka… stupid)?
WR: Rishard Matthews (or how about Tommy Streeter as a size option?)
S: Antonio Allen
LB: Trevathan
Dwight had issues in Mobile. And Chapel Hill.
I’d like to see them use one of these late picks on Tommy Streeter if he’s still there. Fast, tall and long arms, with NFL coaching he could be our RZ jump ball specialist.
Tommy dropping knowledge on PE.com
Went to philadelphiaeagles.com to check the roster for CBs, and who’s on Eagles Live? You! You should give us warnings about this stuff.
Question:
Assuming Boykin wins the slot CB spot, who is his backup? He’s got injury concerns, so do you keep Hanson? Try to put Hughes or Marsh at the spot in case of emergency?
I think they hold onto Hanson as insurance.
I think Hughes would be the backup slot to Boykin. Will keep Hanson through TC just in case.
someone may get a nice pick with CB, Leonard Johnson from Iowa St.. He was Mayocks #5 CB before the combine. Scott Wright also had him at #8. He turned in a poor work out. He’s a tough, physical corner who is an excellent tackler and excels in press-coverage. He just doesn’t have any top-end speed.
I guess we won’t see honest-to-goodness competition for Jason Avant via the draft.
I’m disappointed by that, too. Instead of selecting a project QB, it would be nice to address our RZ problems at some point.
(Nevertheless, great draft, of course.)
Still good WRs on the board.
I wonder if we still get Potter with one of the 6ths…
He reportedly had some shoulder/back issues that could have taken him off the Eagles board. If clean, would be great value in here.
Hard not to like Kellen Moore, watching him on Gruden QB Camp…good smart kid
Yeah. I like him too. I wasn’t sure we had room for him before Foles so I can’t envision a scenario in which we take him… unless there’s a Kafka trade or something.
T-LAW:
Here’s two names:
Polk – RB
Streeter – WR
You had Polk the #5 rated RB. He’s fallen like a rock.
Streeter you had as the 20th WR, close enough to Criner.
______________
QUESTION: Is it fair at this point — especially for Polk — wonder if there are *character* issues for these guys?
Polk was a Junior this year at UW, but suddenly became a Senior due to some odd situation. Wonder if he had academic issues and didn’t get an extra year. Could also have some medical concern I don’t know of.
Streeter was a 1-year wonder who made a terrible decision to come out. That always raises red flags for me.
Love Polk. Genuinely disappointed for him.
Streeter isn’t a guy I’m all that into.
declaring for the draft was dumb for Streeter, but if you pick him, then you’re using his bad decision to get him cheap. Anyway, I don’t worship measurables so I’m not stuck on him, but it’s the sixth round
With Polk there might be a mileage issue… I think he had about a million carries at UW. Good pass catcher, though, I think…
Does anyone have a clue as to why Antonio Allen is dropping? Everything I’ve read about him had at worst as a 4th round pick.
Agreed…I was looking at him for our pick at 153….should compete at SS at worse immediate contributor to ST
4 Safeties have been drafted in round 6 ahead of Allen. I know his combine performance was nothing spectacular, but his game tape is good. I’m wondering if he tested positive for something…
Tommy,
Any clue why Tommy Streeter is falling so far? I saw he dropped a few passes at the combine, but really good measurables
Already hate Osweiler….”I was talking to John”……you call him Mr. Elway son
RE: Ryan Lindley to the Cardinals (Rd 6)
T-LAW:
I think, if given the chance to throw to Fitz and Floyd, Ryan Lindley’s going to look a whole let better than a 6th rd pick.
Potentially its a great fit for Lindley.
Not gonna lie – I liked Lindley’s development potential a lot more than Foles’.
and there goes Danny…
Happy for him. Love Trevathan. Want him to succeed.
Can we give the Patriots their 6th round pick back for a 5th next year? Just want to keep the streak alive!
Arrrhh! Broncos didn’t waste anytime drafting Danny Trevathan. Had my fingers crossed he might slide to one of the Eagles picks.
My targets
Rishard Matthews – WR
Nate Potter – OT
Taylor Thompson – TE
Antonio Allen – SS
Junior Hemingway – WR
Emmanuel Acho – LB (Wildcard)
Adding Polk to the list as well
Good list. I still like Travis Lewis, too.
Thompson already got picked. Should have knocked him off the list above. TEN took him as DE, oddly enough.
I say we take him anyway and battle it out in court
Pick is coming up.
WR Junior Hemingway or Rishard Matthews would be my preference.
SS Antonio Allen is a favorite of mine.
TE? OL?
Remember when we tried to get both TE OL by drafting Te’O?
What’s going on with Cam Johnson?
I could see Allen going to the Skins since they need DB help
Markelle me
picked two picks ago by Tenn.
OH NO! WE TOOK THE LAST GUY ON TOMMY’S “AVOID” LIST!!!
Uh oh i think we got a player tommy didn’t want
Compton is a good pick by the Skins.
wasting no time…
Bring on your Cox and McNutt jokes…
They needed some hard talent to replace Peters
Love is in the air Tommy, there’s your McNutt.
They really like McNutt, huh?!
RE: Pass Rush
T-LAW:
Is Curry a guy who can line up inside — say, right next to FC — with TCole and Babin on the outside? Some of the Senior Bowl tape showed him on the inside, and he looked great.
(You may have already covered this in your scouting report, so sorry in advance.)
Played some DT in Mobile and killed the OGs who tried to block him. Could be real good fit in there.
I think they drafted him because they wanted the sexual innuendos to come back…
WR Marvin McNutt – 6-3, 216
Real good value. Big WR who excels on slants and crossing routes. Times faster than he plays. Good RZ player. Big issue for me is that he struggled vs top CBs. That kept me from liking him as a 3rd/4th, but he is good value here in the 6th. Has NFL size and ability.
It looks like they addressed all the needs left over from day 2, except possibly no slot WR. They got: backup RB prospect, 2 OL prospects, slot corner and possible red zone guy. Very nicely done. SOOO much better than last year!
Andy picked off Tommy’s no go list to show Philly he’s still running the joint.
I didn’t read Tommy’s writeup but he looks like a good choice. Has been receiver three years after playing QB but has good speed, size, catching instincts and intelligence. Needs to develop things like route running and after the catch. A value at this point. Don’t know about him in the slot.
He used to play QB? Let’s use him in the wildcat!
It would have been weird to have Cox without some Mcnutt’s.
VIDEO PROFILE
http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-draft/09000d5d8285417f/2012-Draft-profile-WR-Marvin-McNutt-Iowa
If I see this correctly, he is competition for Cooper, yes?
And insurance against Plaxico
Great draft… Cox will be Boykin til he McNutts. (Yes, I am 12 years old)
HA!
RE: not wanting McNutt
I had no interest in him because I assumed he was going to be a 3rd/early 4th. Didn’t like him in that area at all.
Late in the 6th is whole different story. OK by me.
In fairness, it’s hard to dislike any pick in the 6th; it’s not like you’re expecting greatness from anybody you get around here anyway
I’d be mad if Vontaze Burfict was taken anywhere.
(This thread needed a gratuitous Burfict-slam.)
another safety taken ahead of Allen. Weird…
Well, I guess we could still take Rishard Matthews…
Okay, we’re on the clock. If they really want to mess with our heads they’ll take Kellen Moore.
Brandon Washington – OT – Miami
hope he’s another jason kelce 6th round wunderkid.
If the Giants take Matthews here it’ll be a swift kick in McNutts
Would you like fries with that?
Shocked by OG Brandon Washington from Miami. Played OT for the Canes. 6-3, 320. Will play OG for us. Limited athlete who is a tough, physical blocker. I don’t see him as a Mudd type of blocker at all. Must have felt he was good value and worth the risk. Real interesting.
I’m going to go out on a limb (short limb with one round left) and say as much as Reid loves competition, he isn’t looking for some for Avant.
BRANDON WASHINGTON VIDEO (COMBINE)
http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-combine/09000d5d827d36dc/2012-combine-workout-Brandon-Washington
I like this pick ok, especially with Mudd’s blessing, but I’m confused where you hide this guy at Miami. If he’s a top prep who played on Miami why didn’t he go higher and have more press coverage? For one thing he hasn’t played much.. went from guard to tackle. I guess he’s brought in to compete with Vandervelde.
Never found a home at Miami. Also, there was coaching change. Kid has serious talent. I think he’s an odd fit, but getting with a guy like Mudd who knows exactly what he wants could be a very good thing.
If McNutt plays well, we can credit Tommy for getting the other 31 teams to take him off their draft board.
I do my part.
We might step Brandon Washington up to an XXXL jersey…
26 pix away now
Does the success of this draft mean we can blame the others on Ryan Grigson?
Now that’s funny.
I thought that earlier as well
Seriously did Allen kill somebody that no one outside the NFL knows about?
And Cam Johnson… thought he looked solid at the Senior Bowl.
Cam has Sickle Cell Trait, which is a serious condition that affects his ability to play. Doesn’t process oxygen well and needs rest after just a few snaps. I’m sure teams are concerned.
RIGHT! Ryan Clark has that and had to sit out the playoff game in Denver because of the altitude…
I think I was also confusing Cam Johnson for the DE from last year who had had a heart attack? Remember that guy?
I assume we would be one of the teams interested, with our rotation style, but his hope of being an Eagle ended with Curry. If we trade Tapp, he might be a UDFA target.
RE: Allen
I don’t know what his deal is. Maybe he’s dumb. Criminal? Druggie? Iggles Blitz reader? Those are the kind of red flags that scare people.
T-LAW:
We’re getting close so . . . who are your premium rookie free agents?
Great question. Gotta get going on that list.
The Steelers have 4 7ths????
That’s hilarious – we drafted Cox and McNutt 😉
Ballsy move.
Haha. Fletcher Cox and Marvin McNutt sounds like two porn stars
Vikings take Audie Cole. That’s one of those picks that just feels right.
They like taking big MLBs. He’s 6-4, 240. Good fit.
tommy is chris osuwu a possible UDFA?..I know he has major medical issues but he has amazing skills…I just don’t want to see chad hall….. Does that make me unamerican?
Place your bets on last player///position picked by Birds
I’d like Antonio Allen, but I’m going with Polk
Colts take DE Tim Fugger… great last name.
Any reason Alfonzo Dennard hasn’t been picked yet? Not a fan of him for us, but 7th round seems late for him.
assaulted a po-po…with his type of play he could be called for a penalty he’s out on the field
One of the last two NE picks coming up. Potential Eagles trade?
No trade this year.
Arizona takes Nate Potter. That’s one of those picks that just feels wrong.
Shoulder/back issues must have really hurt his value.
Eagles flew Janzen Jackson in for a visit… wonder if he’s the pick here…
Whenever they cut to the Cowboys “war” room it looks more like a takeout counter at a barbecue place than the nerve center of a 1.2 billion dollar enterprise…
That’s awesome.
Stomach punch courtesy of the Dolphins…. Rishard Matthews
here’s where chris polk can be tied up
or draft a CB to replace Asante
Bryce Brown. Like we all predicted.
Mayock on Bryce Brown: “I don’t know.”
Eagles did meet with him. This is a guy they’re willing to roll the dice on. Big time talent. Brown was an elite HS recruit. He can be a special runner. Problem is that he’s bounced around from college to college. Never found a home and some of that is on him.
Can he handle job angle of pro football? Has the on-field ability.
Well, at least they got (sort of) competition for Dion Lewis.
Thanks for everything Tommy.
Cheers.
My pleasure, sir.
Well Bryce can’t be worse than Ronnie Brown was last year right? This guy was a stud coming out of HS.
I like the Bryce Brown pick… the insanely early declare for the draft discount.. he’s not being picked for CFO, he just needs to be taught to run the ball. High upside 7th round pick, and if it doesn’t work out it’s no biggy.
From CBS:
The college career of once-heralded running back Bryce Brown was a monumental disappointment. But his considerable talent means that there’s a chance – albeit, a small one – for redemption in the NFL. It certainly won’t be easy considering the holes in Brown’s resume. The No. 1 recruit in the nation from Wichita, KS, in 2009, Brown rushed for a ridiculous 7,209 yards at the prep level and was so highly regarded that he was compared to Barry Sanders. He was also ranked five spots ahead of Trent Richardson, who is now expected to be selected fourth overall next week by the Cleveland Browns. There was even talk Brown would skip college for the
CFL. Brown headed to Knoxville but then transferred from Tennessee, where he struggled after being stuck behind Montario Hardesty, a 1,600-yard rusher and future NFL second-round draft pick. He sat out a season after transferring to Kansas State, where his brother, Arthur, is now a star linebacker. But it didn’t work out in 2011 for Bryce, who had just three carries for 16 yards for the Wildcats. He left the school in the middle of the season and eventually declared for the NFL draft in January.
story reminiscent of “Fast Willie” Parker formerly of the Steelers.
Thanks for the insight Tommy. I’ll enjoy reading through all of your last 10 post at work tomorrow. Goodnight from Denmark.
Good night, sir.
Bryce Brown has IR written all over him
Good call… I’m gonna go with “stinger.”
Tommy, thanks much for everything! Great job and much enjoyed lurking here during the draft.
Glad you enjoyed it. Helps when the Eagles make good picks.
A belated “good job” to you, Tommy, on your Eagles Live performance. I know it’s not easy opening for Rob Rang but you did a heckuva job.
Thank you sir. Would have hyped it in here, but kind of a last minute thing.
Great read on Bryce Brown

Low Risk Huge Reward
Wow
Too right wow! That story is crazy. His highlights are crazier! He knocks defenders back on the goal line like children near the start of the video.
A man left Radio City Music Hall in critical condition. Witnesses say as he was leaving, he mistook Vontaze Burfict for a fan and said “just the dregs left.”
Absolutely love this draft. Filled several needs with quality players. For the most part, targeted BPA. Were patient throughout the draft and got guys much later than predicted, thus maximized value.
The draft did leave a few holes remaining though (not saying this was a mistake of the draft, just the right players were not available or they targeted something else). We still could use competition at safety (Bell could fill this need), competition at backup RB (still several vet FA options out there), and competition for Avant (Plax?). I imagine most would disagree with me, but I would still welcome competition for Kafka beyond Foles. If Kafka looses to the competition, we cut him and move forward with the guy we bring in and Foles as the future backup. If Kafka wins, you cut the guy you brought in. Lastly, I would love to see us bring in competition at FB, although, I guess it is not clear they will even keep a FB.
Also, competition for Chas Henry at punter would also be welcomed.
Eagles did make an offer to a FA punter last month. They must also feel Chas needs competition.
Frankly, if Bryan Anger had been available in the 5th or later, I would have been interested. Of course, he was selected in the 3rd… no thank you.
This draft seems way different than howie’s usual draft.
I’m curious about the second round pick that we traded. Bears jumped in front of us and grabbed a WR then we traded back. Did we want curry and thought he would still b there? Did we want that WR the bears took and decided to move back?
I wonder if bears told Eagles who they are picking!
Tommy, are there any slot receiver’s left that might make it to UDFA? Quick guys with RAC ability?
I was away all day. Did I miss anything?
Andy Reid called a press conference to show off a colorful shirt and talk about some college boys that he is “into”.
Quiet other than that.
Eagles don’t deserve 7th round compensatories after last year’s poor performance. Lloyd and Havili. I’m all Morton on that. Now is the time to think about better compensatories next year.
This article makes me feel a little better about Mychal Kendricks’s ability to handle SAM.
http://www.csnphilly.com/football-philadelphia-eagles/eagles-talk/Eagles-hope-Kendricks-cures-tight-end-tr?blockID=698337&feedID=692
Here’s hoping.
This year’s Nate Ilaoa Award goes to… Bryce Brown.
How many comments will we see talking about how great Brown was in HS before he’s cut?
I’m a firm believer in the “don’t judge a draft class until 3 seasons” rule, but without over-hyping these rookies I think we drafted 2 starters and 2 or 3 solid contributors. That’s not bad at all.
If Cox, Kendricks, Curry, and Boykins are all contributing this season, HR and AR are winning.
Chris Polk, Chris Harris and Philip Thomas have been signed so far.
