Trade Rumors

Pro Football Talk has some interesting news this morning.

* The Eagles are looking for a starting caliber Safety via trade.

* The Eagles are one of several teams that has called the Bucs about WR Vincent Jackson.

Is this true?

Sam always brings great perspective.

Jimmy Bama makes a relevant point as well.

I don’t doubt for a second that the Eagles called about Jackson. You call to find out his price. You want to know for your own curiosity, but also to know which teams around you might be willing to make that move.

Are the Eagles genuinely interested? I just don’t know. What would happen to Riley Cooper? Would he move to the slot or slide down to being your number four receiver? It’s easy to say “Who cares”, but the Eagles have had good chemistry over the last 2 years and Cooper, believe it or not, has been part of that. I think his best trait is that he’s willing to block and isn’t going to complain when the ball doesn’t come his way. Not all WRs fit that description. Part of what makes the Eagles offense work so well right now is that there is no player they have to force the ball to. Chip Kelly can switch gameplan from week to week and the skill players are fine with it. There are no Dez Bryant meltdowns on the sideline.

All that said, there is no question that Jackson would be an upgrade at WR. He is huge at 6-5, 230 and Kelly does like big WRs. You would think Jackson would make a difference in the Red Zone, where the Eagles are really struggling. If the price is right, dealing for Jackson does make some sense. I don’t feel like this is likely to happen, though.

I do think the Eagles could have interest in adding a Safety. I think they hoped Earl Wolff would push Nate Allen this year and that one of the two would emerge. Wolff has been limited by nagging injuries, and I don’t think the coaching staff is happy about that. Allen has not taken a step forward from last year’s performance. He is an adequate starter, but nothing more. The hope was that playing in the same system for a second straight year would help him to improve. It hasn’t.

Who would they add?

There is all kinds of speculation going on with fans on Twitter. This is pure guesswork since no names were directly linked in the report. We do have a few things to keep in mind. The most important is availability. You are probably looking at someone from a bad team. Someone who has a losing record makes more sense when it comes to dealing a player for a future pick.

This is also a pretty good angle to keep in mind. We know the Eagles also like versatility, but with limited options they may be willing to go for someone who is less of an ideal fit.

Check out the standings and then some depth charts. I think you’ll be disappointed at the options. Michael Griffin and Dashon Goldson just aren’t names to get excited about. But they are physical players and could be an upgrade on Nate Allen.

Don’t get too excited about the team making a move. In-season trades are rare. And the Eagles aren’t desperate. Think of them maybe as curious shoppers that are open to making a deal if the right situation is there.

100% correct that Vincent Jackson is a huge upgrade. If we got him for the Bryce Brown pick, I’d love the deal.

It would push Cooper down the depth chart for this year and protect us against some ding dongs overpaying for Maclin next year.

  2. 2 Ramiroquaaii said at 12:03 PM on October 26th, 2014:

I think Jackson is worth it only if Cooper is involved in the trade. 2015 Cap will be a lot smaller.

And i’d love to see Eagles make a move on Harrison Smith.

  3. 3 Media Mike said at 12:05 PM on October 26th, 2014:

I don’t like Harrison Smith’s substandard college background and propensity to take 15 yard penalties, but I like how you’re casting a wide net on safety possibilities.

I can’t see trading Cooper because Maclin isn’t under contract beyond this year and his 1 year contract prevents us from negotiating with him until he actually hits the market. I think adding Vincent Jackson is prevention from losing Maclin if he won’t sign for the money they offer.

  4. 4 Ramiroquaaii said at 12:33 PM on October 26th, 2014:

I understand giving a big contract pro Cooper since Maclin came from a serious injury and would ensure something good for WR corp, but today we can say that was a mistake.

Maclin is much more important than Cooper to this offense, and we have to re-sign him and with other important names of the team. Despite the large Cap today, next year things may be a bit more complicated.

I prefer to give a little overpaid to Maclin that have made a long contract with Cooper.

  5. 5 Media Mike said at 12:48 PM on October 26th, 2014:

I hear what you’re saying, but the Cooper contract is all fake money after then 2nd of 2015. It’ll be interesting to see what they do at WR moving forward, but I still don’t see them overpaying Maclin.

  6. 6 Ramiroquaaii said at 1:31 PM on October 26th, 2014:

Yeah, I looked at Cooper’s contract, and in 2016 will be 2.4M of dead money, let’s see what happens.

  7. 7 anon said at 1:15 PM on October 26th, 2014:

maybe they arent as happy with mac as they thought they’d be. he’s got one of the worst catch rates in the league. a number of his tds are on broken coverage.

that said don’t blame him for the catch rate 100%.

  8. 8 Ramiroquaaii said at 1:34 PM on October 26th, 2014:

Mac number lie a little. He was targeted 61 times and has 28 catches (not sure), but has 0 drops.

  9. 9 anon said at 2:12 PM on October 26th, 2014:

that says a lot about either Foles’ or Mac’s catch radius. I think he’s the most targeted guy int he NFL.

  10. 10 Ramiroquaaii said at 2:03 PM on October 26th, 2014:

Jeremy Maclin is having a career year. He’s on pace for 72 catches, 1,186 yards, 11 TDs. All would be career highs.

  11. 11 anon said at 2:12 PM on October 26th, 2014:

haha remember when he was headed for 1600yds, then 1400yds, now it’s 1200yds.

  12. 12 Ramiroquaaii said at 2:37 PM on October 26th, 2014:

like you said before, that says more about Foles than Maclin rs

  13. 13 Anders said at 2:05 PM on October 26th, 2014:

Maclin has caught every catcheble thrown to him. That means its not Maclin’s problem, but Foles

  14. 14 Ramiroquaaii said at 2:59 PM on October 26th, 2014:

    exactly haha

    ACViking —

In a previous thread you said that I was “wrong” for suggesting that the majority of the country may be able to watch the Eagles-Cardinals game.

I was curious, so I went through the top 250 MSAs in the country, which total approximately 253 million people. Of those 253 million people, I believe approximately 117 million will be able to watch this game. So at least one-third of the country, but not far off from a simple majority.

Anyway, I believe you are right, but it is closer than you may have thought. 6 of the top 10 MSAs (NYC-LA-DAL-PHL-WAS-MIA) are showing the game.

I do believe more people will be able to watch this game than any other game.

But you are most likely correct and I concede.

  24. 24 SteveH said at 1:01 PM on October 26th, 2014:

Another thing to keep in mind is cultural fit. Kelly seems real specific about the kind of guys he wants brought in, he will absolutely skip on a talented guy if he thinks the he won’t fit the culture.

  25. 25 SteveH said at 1:03 PM on October 26th, 2014:

God there’s some real poo on for the early games. Panthers-Seahawks only one worth watching I think.

  26. 26 Booth said at 1:06 PM on October 26th, 2014:

Coop and a third/fourth rounder for Jackson and goldson? I’m not convinced the bucs want to move Jackson, but I’d take some version of this trade no doubt

  27. 27 anon said at 1:12 PM on October 26th, 2014:

would love to move cooper for jackson. bet that would open up everyone else on the field plus you gotta think jackson is the better blocker.

  28. 28 EagleNebula said at 1:55 PM on October 26th, 2014:

But how will that affect the play calls on offense? How long till he knows the play book well enough to play up to speed?

  29. 29 Booth said at 2:04 PM on October 26th, 2014:

That’s the problem with any in season move, but there is no question Jackson is a number 1 WR. Coop will never play on his level. We’re a good playoff team at the moment, with the addition of players like this we become closer to Super Bowl contenders. And while goldson isn’t great, he’s gotta be better than allen

  30. 30 EagleNebula said at 2:08 PM on October 26th, 2014:

I just don’t see a point to making in season moves, I think the rewards don’t match the risk for such a few number of games. A lot goes into the off season program, and you don’t want to limit 10 other players on the field for an upgrade in one place.

In reality it is a short sighted and reactionary move. It takes players several weeks to get into a rhythm with one another, you lose more in the interim then you gain overall. Not to mention sending a message to the team that though you claim to value dedication year round, you are willing to make exceptions. Doesn’t seem like chips way of thinking or acting.

  31. 31 anon said at 2:19 PM on October 26th, 2014:

It’s not that short sighted. He and Sproles are about the same age.

You gotta wonder if coaches were thinking “with the quality of the QB you don’t need a no. 1 WR (see how GB, NE, work) but they’ve gotta be rethinking that (the fact that coop has looked terrible at catching doesn’t hurt). Getting a guy like that in the draft is definitely a first round pick.

That said i’m 95% sure it won’t happen. Rarely when the Eagles name is thrown around do they get that guy, usually it’s “hush hush” then “WTF, ok”. I also agree w/ your sentiment about bringing guys in mid season. But you also have to think that the EAGLES FO thinks we’re making a run this year, NFC is WIDE open. So if he’s a guy that can make a difference in the playoffs then you gotta consider. B/c you don’t have much at the WR spot right now.

  32. 32 EagleNebula said at 2:40 PM on October 26th, 2014:

Sproles was an off season acquisition, totally different situation. Like I said, the off season program is big with Chip. The move wasn’t a reaction to a player/group of players having a slow start to a season. Yes, Jackson would be an improvement to cooper all things being equal (like participating in the off season program) but we wouldn’t be talking this way if Cooper was making big plays and Foles was hitting his down field targets. To me, jumping ship on what you have been working on for months for a perceived improvement is short sighted and reactionary.

  33. 33 anon said at 2:42 PM on October 26th, 2014:

yes we wouldn’t be talking this way if we had better quality WRs.

  34. 34 EagleNebula said at 2:52 PM on October 26th, 2014:

Or better play from our QB/OLine/RB. Can we please stop pretending that individual players are the difference in making a play off run. Case-Study, 2004. TO was a dominant force all season, but in the post season the only game the Eagles lost was the one in which he played. Football is not baseball or basketball.

  35. 35 anon said at 2:56 PM on October 26th, 2014:

    So it’s nobody’s fault b/c it’s everyone’s fault?

  36. 36 EagleNebula said at 3:05 PM on October 26th, 2014:

if it is everybody’s fault how could it be nobody’s? I never liked that statement because it contradicts itself. Just because more than 1 person is responsible doesn’t somehow negate their responsibility. A failure is a failure regardless of how many people are involved – it is better to accept that and get to the actual cause than create a scape goat and ignore the heart of the issues.

Everyone has a hand in poor play. Cooper dropped passes, Foles missed open receivers, OL had miscommunications and didn’t sustain blocks, the RB was too focused on big plays and seemed to not trust the OL. Why not hold everyone accountable for their faults. Brining in a single player may fix a drop or two, but doesn’t fix miscommunications on the OL, the RB not trusting his blockers, or the QB missing open players. Football is the ultimate team sport and requires all 11 players to be performing in unison. Unfortunately that fact seems to be lost in our mistreatment of statistics for the sport and exacerbated by the structure of fantasy point assignments. But that is a discussion for another day.

**Edit: And lets not lose sight of the fact that in the mist of all of this, there have been plenty of moments where we have seen the potential of the players that are here working as a unit. With only 6 games, no true conclusions can be drawn. Hell, we were saying the same things about cooper this time last year.
