WR3

We have agreed to terms on a trade with Washington Commanders for WR Jahan Dotson and a fifth-round pick in the 2025 draft in exchange for a third-round pick and two seventh-rounds picks from the 2025 draft. pic.twitter.com/slf7qTD0An

We knew the Eagles would look for help at WR. AJ Brown and DeVonta Smith are great, but you have to be prepared in case one of them misses some time. Dotson is a young player with a good combination of experience and potential. He’s started 26 games in 2 seasons. He’s 84-1041-11 as a receiver. Dotson hadn’t shown enough that Washington felt he was untouchable. They have a new coach and front office. They have a rookie QB and know that it will take time to get where they want to be. By dealing Dotson, the Commanders get a resource for the future.
The Eagles get a player who can help them. I had him going to the Eagles in a mock draft in 2022 and here’s what I wrote about him at the time.
1 – 18 – WR Jahan Dotson – Penn State – 5-11, 178
I’m expecting a run on WRs so I think the top four guys will be gone. This might be a bit of a reach, but the more I thought about Dotson, the more he made sense for the Eagles. He can play outside or in the slot. Dotson has great hands and is a polished receiver. He can deliver big plays through his outstanding RAC ability or by going deep. Dotson locates the ball well on deep passes and adjusts to off-target throws. He is slight, but the Eagles took a chance on DeVonta Smith last year and his slender build didn’t slow him at all. Dotson also brings the added bonus of being a terrific punt returner. The Eagles need big plays on offense and STs. Dotson can help in both areas.
Dotson hasn’t become a high level NFL player. At the same time, he wasn’t on a good passing offense in either of his two seasons. He does have experience at catching passes from Carson Wentz so that will give him and Dallas Goedert something to chat about in the locker room.
Dotson has ability as you can see below. He’s fast. He can play in the slot or outside. He isn’t big, but can make some tough catches.

While he will be WR3, Dotson doesn’t have to play in the slot. The Eagles can put AJ or DeVonta in there to get a mismatch and put Dotson out wide. They can put Dotson in the slot and have him go vertical to stretch the defense and clear out space over the middle. They have a lot of good options.
Dotson has the feel and short area quickness necessary to be an effective inside route runner who can read depth/leverage on decision routes and the ability to sit soft when defenses zone it off. Also has the ability to work over the middle on the Deep Cross routes with good…

There is risk in this move. Dotson might turn out to be a mediocre player in Philly. He won’t have pressure on him to be a major part of the offense. He’ll have stud receivers, a talented TE and a stud RB around him. He’ll also have a star QB and good OL. Dotson just has to do his part. That’s it.
Giving up a third round pick for Dotson is an aggressive move. I like it, though. There is no juggernaut team this year. SF is good, but has some flaws. Dallas is Dallas. The Chiefs have issues. Why not load up your roster and go for it? While this was aggressive, it was reasonable aggressive. Dotson doesn’t have a high salary. The Eagles control him this year and next.
The downside is that we’ll have to say goodbye to Parris Campbell. Fight back the tears and just think good thoughts about Dotson.

We have signed OL Jason Poe and released TE C.J. Uzomah. pic.twitter.com/Oz6DTHgcUK

Uzomah had a chance to be TE3. As I watched him this summer, it didn’t look like his heart was totally into it. This was going to be his 10th year in the league. Maybe he just lost the edge that it takes to stay in the league.
Poe is an interior blocker who can help eat up snaps this weekend.
