Practice Squad Moves and Roster Talk

The Eagles set their initial 53-man roster on Sunday. On Monday they announced most of their practice squad signings. Howie Roseman also met with the media to offer some answers on the thinking behind the roster moves.

Let’s start with the PS.

That leaves two spots open. Could be a TE and WR.

The big news is that Bernard and Weru went unclaimed and made it to the PS. Bernard is so raw that I thought he had a solid chance to make it through. Weru surprised me. I thought he showed enough that some team would take a chance on him. Every team has inactive players each week. Why not use one of those spots on a guy with his upside? Thankfully nobody did.

Rookies Deontae Lawson and Zion Wilson showed enough to make the PS. I think they got caught in a numbers crunch at their respective positions. Both guys have good potential.

The Eagles did add some outside players. OT Kiran Amegadjie was a third round pick of the Bears. He struggled mightily in pass pro, but showed promise as a run blocker. We’ll see if the Eagles can do a better job of developing him than Chicago did. Edge rusher Mason Reiger is a high motor player who is a good fit for the Eagles scheme. RB Jaydon Blue comes over from Dallas.

The Eagles had 4 players claimed by other teams, more than anyone else in the league.

DB Kapena Gushiken
TE Cam Latu

3 or all 4 of them might have made the PS. Hinton is the one guy I’m unsure of.

Overall, I’m fine with the Eagles PS moves. I am a bit surprised they went heavy at RB.

Howie spoke a bit about possible interest in TE Zach Ertz.

“First, I’d say what an unbelievable player, what an unbelievable person, tremendous respect for him,” Roseman said Monday. “At the same time, love what we have going in our tight end room, too.”

“I would say, have talked to Zach over a period of time, obviously rehabbing his ACL, and (have a good) relationship, just like a lot of our former players who’ve been here.”

We might not see any movement there until after Week 1, if at all. I’ll write more on Ertz in another post. The move would make some sense to me.

Howie said Elijah Moore played his way onto the roster with a great summer. He also had praise for EJ Jenkins and how he’s developed into a true Y-TE, someone who can catch and block.

Roseman isn’t going to spill the beans on many key issues. That’s not how the Eagles operate. He wouldn’t say too much about keeping the 4 QBs. He didn’t have any new info on Jonathan Greenard. Howie did have one interesting nugget.

It is always good when a key concern goes away because things work so well. Usually it feels like the opposite happens.

The Eagles did try to pull off trades, but couldn’t find one that made good sense for both teams. This could change in the coming days.
