Misc Draft Talk

Posted: April 18th, 2014 | Author: | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 105 Comments »

Quick post for now. One thing I need to stress as we talk about draft prospects is that I’m watching players every morning and every night. I’m still working on my lists and figuring out what I think. I had to move this spring and that ate up a lot of time I would normally spend doing draft research and writing. Thank god they moved the draft back this year.

I am also watching tape on players to make sure I get a thorough understanding of them. Some of you don’t like what I say about Kyle Van Noy. Others disagree with my thoughts on Kareem Martin. And so on. That’s true for many players I comment on.

Understand that I don’t watch 1 or 2 games and then move on. I watch and re-watch the prospects to make sure that I didn’t miss something. When most of the draft world loves OLB Demarcus Lawrence and I don’t, my reaction isn’t that they’re a bunch of idiots but rather…what am I missing? I’ve watched several of his games in the past 10 days to see if I’m missing something. Lawrence has grown on me a bit, but I still think taking him in the 30’s is crazy. I just don’t see an explosive athlete.

Van Noy is one of the most talked about players. I just watched games of him last night. I love the guy, but just not as an OLB in the 3-4. I don’t see someone that I think can consistently beat LTs in the NFL. I see a tough, instinctive and productive player. I’d love him at either OLB spot in the 4-3. I’d love him at ILB in the 3-4. He simply isn’t a good enough pass rusher in my book to be a 3-4 OLB. Watch his tape carefully. Then imagine that guy going up against Tyron Smith on 3rd down in a crucial game. Is he really going to beat a good NFL LT at a critical moment? Maybe, but I’m sure not confident enough about that to draft him for that role.

Martin would be a terrific 4-3 DE, but I just don’t see an OLB.

I see a guy that has great size. I see a good motor. He will chase the ball and make his share of pursuit plays. I see good athleticism, but nothing special. I don’t see a player that looks great up on his feet. I don’t see a special pass rusher. If you want a 4-3 DE with terrific length and who moves pretty well, this is your guy. I just don’t see an OLB.

The Eagles might disagree. They might love his size and feel he’s worth the risk. We know they looked at Will Clarke, who has a similar build, as an OLB. Jerry Azzinaro was at the UNC Pro Day. I assume he was there to check out Martin. That probably means the Eagles are thinking of him first and foremost as a DE prospect. I think Martin could bulk up to 285 and might be a good 3-4 DE. Taylor Hart was a good player at Oregon for Azz and went 6-6, 284. Martin is a much better athlete than him.

We’ll see what the Eagles think in a few weeks when they start making picks and the picture unfolds. For now we can only speculate and make educated guesses.

Do understand that my opinions are written in sand, not stone. I’m continuing to watch tape of these players to make sure I have informed opinions and I don’t make a rush to judgment.

Martin isn’t violent enough for me. Doesn’t seem to use his hands very well and poor COD. Doesn’t seem twitchy enough to play OLB.

    Prefer Will Clarke most definitely.

  2. 2 Media Mike said at 6:28 AM on April 19th, 2014:

Even though he’s a mental midget when it comes to Xs and Os and should never allowed to be head coach again due to having zero control of the players, Raheem Morris gave an interview on Sirius where he talked about the need for violent football players. Now we obviously don’t want off the field violent steroid cheats like the 70s Steelers who cheated / roided their way to a false place in the football record books, but we need guys who will be violent between those white lines on every snap like B-Dawk, Runyan, Jerome Brown.

    Tommy,
Question for you. Teddy Bridgewater’s skill set fits most of Chip’s priorities, with the glaring exception of hand size/glove on throwing hand. I seem to remember something on this site which specifically noted that a glove on the throwing hand would be a red flag for coach.

Putting aside Foles for the moment, would Bridgewater’s hand size eliminate him from consideration by Kelly at 22?

  4. 4 ICDogg said at 2:49 PM on April 18th, 2014:

Not to say I know much of anything about Bridgewater, but reports have had him dropping wildly. This situation (not necessarily the specific player) reminds me of how Aaron Rogers dropped all the way to Green Bay.

  5. 5 barneygoogle said at 3:37 PM on April 18th, 2014:

I think the only way we take a QB #1 is if we can then trade our #2 and Graham for Dion Jordan–and get the needed OLB pass rusher.

  6. 6 ICDogg said at 4:45 PM on April 18th, 2014:

Jordan’s not gonna happen. But that doesn’t mean they won’t take a qb. Depends on how much they like him.

  7. 7 suthrneagle said at 9:09 PM on April 18th, 2014:

Only way the Eagles use their #1 pick on a qb is if they change the coach, the GM and the owner before the draft…unlikely, irrational, and not gonna happen.
Can`t understand the reasoning behind some of these posts. Didn`t they see last season, the offseason moves so far?

  8. 8 Mark F said at 9:05 AM on April 19th, 2014:

There’s no way we take a QB with our first pick…ain’t happenin’.

  9. 9 himbison said at 2:44 PM on April 18th, 2014:

    Tommy,
OLB seems to be very iffy with alot of these prospects after the top 3. Could the Eagles trade back four to six spots and still be able to trade that pick and Graham for Dion Jordan? It would get Chip his guy AND an extra pick or two

  10. 10 ICDogg said at 2:51 PM on April 18th, 2014:

    Short answer: no.

  11. 11 Ben Hert said at 2:57 PM on April 18th, 2014:

Long answer: Dion Jordan isn’t happening. Ever.

  12. 12 ICDogg said at 4:39 PM on April 18th, 2014:

Certainly not before the draft. After June 1, a possibility, but still remote.

  13. 13 himbison said at 2:57 PM on April 18th, 2014:

Why not? Against the rules? If not, its been reported that a 1st and Graham would make the trade happen

  14. 14 barneygoogle said at 3:39 PM on April 18th, 2014:

Any player is available if the price is right and the trading team is anxious. If Dion gets hurt or plays poorly in year two, nobody will take him next year for a 4th rounder. Miami knows the time to move him is now.

  15. 15 ICDogg said at 4:37 PM on April 18th, 2014:

To take the crazy cap hit the Fins would take, it would take a big offer, if they even were to consider it. And that’s not big enough.

  16. 16 Media Mike said at 6:30 AM on April 19th, 2014:

Absolutely correct. And his production isn’t worth that offer.

If we’re having this same conversation about the Eagles having a lack of talent at ROLB and Jordan struggling in a 4-3 in Miami a year from now, I can more see a trade working out.

  17. 17 barneygoogle said at 1:43 PM on April 19th, 2014:

He can’t play end in a 4-3. That’s the key issue. He’s a complete mis-fit for what they do now. Really bad draft decision. And they moved up in front of us to get Jordan.

  18. 18 Sokhar20 said at 2:59 PM on April 18th, 2014:

Tommy: While it wouldn’t bring the sort of immediate impact I think a lot of fans are clamoring for, how would you feel about trading back a few spots from 22 and then grabbing Attaochu or Marcus Smith at the back of the 1st/top of the 2nd and Van Noy with our 2nd? Having those guys plus Kendricks making up the core of a young linebacking corps would seem like it would be putting our defense on the path to long-term success.

  19. 19 Media Mike said at 6:36 AM on April 19th, 2014:

You’re bringing solid names to the table with that scenario, so I think the fans would be all good in that case.

If we trade down and wind up with a lower first rounder and two thirds and come home with a guard, TE, d-lineman, and wide-out with those picks…………..and none of those guys seriously contribute this year; there will be a lot of grousing.

The more I read about Attaochu and Smith at OLB and Van Noy at ILB leaves me really hoping those guys are on the team because I see the Eagles being able to play both of them on a lot of nickle situations and flat out murdering the other team’s QBs and over the middle pass catchers.

  20. 20 GEAGLE said at 8:09 AM on April 19th, 2014:

ABSOLUTELY!!!! What a score adding those two to our front 7 would be, both short term and long term..

    Hoping for something like:
Trade from 22 down to the Seahawks or Broncos who are all in, say move back to 31 and pick up the 31st pick in round 3. I think if we can trade to the very end of round 1, there will probably be another trade back scenario with a team wanting to Jump the texans who will be picking a QB at the beginning of round two….so we could potentially, trade back twice and get an extra 3rd and 4th

Let’s say we only trade back once and pick 31, we would pick again at 22….I would give some serious thought to trading a 2015 2nd round pick to the Niners for the 77th pick. They have too many picks, so many that they have to find ways to use them. I’d bet anything they would LOVE to convert one of their too many picks to a 2015 pick a round earlier…so there should be an opportunity to get that 77th pick for a 2015 2nd rounder(which will probably be no earlier than the 22nd pick next year)…so we could end up with:
    ..
    31
    54
    77
    86
    Seahawks late 3rd round pick

In THIS draft, I’d bet you get a similar talent at 77, then you would get at 54 in 2015

  21. 21 GEAGLE said at 8:10 AM on April 19th, 2014:

Don’t like mortgaging future picks, but as long as we keep our 2015 1st rounder, we can try to trade back next year and recoup the pick we trade away this year

  22. 22 Will said at 9:23 AM on April 19th, 2014:

Love that you post these game tapes. Just my view — he seemed slow and didn’t really want to initiate contact – almost like he’s looking for the ball and couldn’t find it. Then he seemed to turn it on for a few plays. That bullrush was sweet. Not somebody I’d be overly excited for if he’s drafted by the Eagles.

  26. 26 Neil said at 3:15 PM on April 18th, 2014:

    What about LOLB for KVN?

  27. 27 Media Mike said at 6:41 AM on April 19th, 2014:

Van Noy is too good to be Connor Barwin’s backup and doesn’t fit the LOLB model. Barwin has 5 years left on his deal, so I wouldn’t really worry about drafting a guy to study behind Barwin and replace him until the 2017 draft if we don’t want to extend Barwin. Van Noy is also a full 20 lbs lighter than Barwin, so I’m not sure how well he fits the 3-4 OLB model for pressing the point of attack on run plays.

Van Noy would be a phenomenal guy to put behind DeMeco this year to use in rotation to keep Meco fresher for the season. Van Noy would also be used heavily in 3-3-5 or 4-2-5 formations; especially if Kendricks doesn’t get any better and covering passes.

  28. 28 GEAGLE said at 8:06 AM on April 19th, 2014:

If we drafted KVN, as a rookie he would backup both Barwin and Meco, the way we pretended Casey Mathews could last year….as a rookie! KVN would move all over the place to get snaps where he can….sure he would replace Meco in certain subpackages, sure he would get occasional pass rush opportunities at ROLB so teams don’t know who is dropping and who is coming for the QB when he is across Barwin…

    Very versatile…

But if KVN is drafted, I would expect it to be because we view him as the perfect guy to QB our front 7 when Meco moves on…very smart kid

  29. 29 Ben Hert said at 3:19 PM on April 18th, 2014:

I think the number one this to keep in mind when trying to predict who the Eagles are going to pick in each round are pre-draft visits and workouts. I reference back to T-LAW’s piece post-2013 draft aptly named “Visits Did Matter”

    http://igglesblitz.com/2013/05/visits-did-matter/

We’ve still got a few weeks until the draft, but I think the number one this to consider when trying gauge who Chip and Howie are eyeing is to see who has come in for visits, workouts, etc. And for that, the best place to look is here:

    http://www.bleedinggreennation.com/2014-nfl-draft-philadelphia-eagles-draft-prospect-visits

    and

    http://www.phillymag.com/birds247/2014/03/20/eagles-pre-draft-tracker/

I think by looking at these you can get an idea of what kinds of players, physically, and position-wise, the Eagles are interested in, and even, based off of mocks and other predictions, whether or not they plan on moving up in the first at all.

My point of all of this is that KVN is no where on those lists. And yes I know thats not an end-all be-all of who the Eagles will draft, but its just as good of an indicator as anything else.

  30. 30 barneygoogle said at 3:42 PM on April 18th, 2014:

I think its all smoke and mirrors. Eagles are playing head games with 31 other teams. I hear they are bringing in Joe Banner to see if he can do
    the cone drill. (vanilla fudge.)

  31. 31 ACViking said at 4:51 PM on April 18th, 2014:

What’s the draft plan for the Texans? Or the Browns? Or the Steelers? Or Dallas?

    Or anyone else?

Has any team made its intentions obvious this year?

    Doesn’t seem so.

    But I’m open to argument.

  32. 32 barneygoogle said at 11:41 AM on April 19th, 2014:

Obviously a lot of teams don’t say much, but Kelly and Roseman are saying nothing about anyone. Chip is running around all over the country–and I can’t find a quote from him anywhere.
You do get some comments on players from other coaches and front-office people. Then, there’s Jerry Jones….

  33. 33 GEAGLE said at 11:42 AM on April 19th, 2014:

Rather our coach scout then run his mouth

  34. 34 barneygoogle said at 11:45 AM on April 19th, 2014:

Well, then we have to listen to Howard Eskin run his mouth. He said again today, Eagles will take a receiver, (probably Mike Evans) by trading up. And Eskin sleeps with Roseman….

  35. 35 GEAGLE said at 12:23 PM on April 19th, 2014:

I try to make an effort to make sure to keep certain philly media members out of my brain space…
    ..
Like honestly, the majority of you guys live and breathe the eagles and spend every day improving your football acumen and understanding of the eagles on sites like this…do Yous really think that a blowhard like eskin! or a twerp like gonzo! have a better understanding about the eagles and the NFL draft prospects than most of you people do? Howard Eskin can’t tell you the difference between a. 5technique and a 3 technique,,,..letting idiots like their opinions into your brain space will do way more harm to your understanding of the eagles than good.

Unless a media member can be counted on to take the time to really watch footage for himself, he is completely useless and just regurgitating crap that some other useless media member says…football isn’t like basketball where you can just watch the game live, maybe watch the replay and have a pretty good understanding of why the game played out the way it did, and most of the media has figured out that they don’t need to really put in the work to know what’s really going on in a game, to get to keep their job and write about the eagles…..which is why I respect a guy like Ray Didinger so much, even if he pisses me off half the time, his opinion is worth paying attention to, because it’s a REAL opinion from someone who has ATleast taken the time to put in the work to offer a real opinion….WTF can you ever get from Eskin, Gonzo, or Misanelli? Their opinions do more harm than good….they got 100,000 eagles fans convinced of Braindead, laughable crap like trading FOles because he could never play for Chip….

It’s draft time, what can you really get out of idiots who spent months making thousands of eagles fans believe that the eagles would even consider Dee friggin Milner or Geno smith with the #4 pick? Lol

  36. 36 GEAGLE said at 12:29 PM on April 19th, 2014:

General rule….if you got paid to tell thousands of fans that the eagles would draft a CB who hasn’t backpeddled since high school with the highest pick we have had since Mcnabb, you should be fired the moment the first round ended…it’s not easy to predict who the eagles will draft, but if you are getting paid, at the very least you should have some idea who we WOULDNT draft..

  37. 37 barneygoogle said at 1:17 PM on April 19th, 2014:

Howard is a blowhard, true, but he does sniff around the NovaCare Complex a lot. He must be seeing and hearing things and then, making some educated guesses.
Frankly, I don’t like trading up–and blowing up our draft– except for a Lawrence Taylor type. And he’s not in this draft.

  38. 38 GEAGLE said at 1:29 PM on April 19th, 2014:

Wouldn’t worry about us blowing what few picks we have moving up in such a deep draft like this, think moving back is far more likely….

You know who else, hears stuff and I surprisingly usually get good nuggets from this time of year? Merrill Reese….sure guys like eskin and on a national level, Kiper hears stuff that is true and valuable to us fans, problem is they also happen to be the perfect vehicles to get misinformation out….so for every quality truthful nugget they provide, they problem also provide 3 counterintelligence nuggets…..

Just think that anything of importance will be kept secret from everyone

  39. 39 D3Center said at 8:21 PM on April 18th, 2014:

One thing I find very curious about the list of official visits is that its mostly made up of guys who are not consensus first round picks. I only see two definite first rounders on there in Evans and Barr and two possibles in Marcus Smith and Kelvin Benjamin. I’m not sure if this means anything other than the Eagles are trying to get maximum value out of all there picks but I thought it was interesting enough to note.

  40. 40 austinfan said at 10:14 PM on April 18th, 2014:

Eagles have visits for various reasons:
    1) final check down for guys with questions
    2) smokescreens for other teams
    3) build a relationship with a potential UDFA – since they can choose where to go, bringing them in and treating them well can help in signing them – “we really liked you but only had one pick in the final 100”

  41. 41 D3Center said at 12:05 AM on April 19th, 2014:

I think your first and third point are probably a big part of the answer. I’m not sure how successful a smokescreen with the 22 overall pick would be but that’s a possibility.

  42. 42 Media Mike said at 6:43 AM on April 19th, 2014:

Some of the “smokescreen” stuff is also data mining to see if these guys will tell you what other teams asked them and/or to get some scouting information on the player if you wind up playing him in the near future. There is a story circulating that the Patriots like interviewing every QB possible so they can get set up with better gameplans against that kid when they play him.

  43. 43 GEAGLE said at 7:56 AM on April 19th, 2014:

Whatever plan they have, they are sure hiding it well from the media–front office must really be united–nothing leaking out. I expect a lot of surprises around the draft, including maybe a trade, and some great undrafted signees.
You never know. I mean, who’d of known McNabb would go to jail before DeSean…?

  47. 47 GEAGLE said at 7:55 AM on April 19th, 2014:

I don’t think eagles have too much of a plan….when you are picking so late in each round you better know and trust your board, and not be sittings here with a specific plan of a attack…need to be fluid, prepare to find a talent we aren’t expecting fall to us, and be ready to pounce

  58. 58 Baloophi said at 6:25 PM on April 18th, 2014:

Right… and I think it’s about managing expectations. Like, if we do take an OLB in round 4, we shouldn’t expect a Pro Bowler, or should expect that’s what the front office is expecting.

Also of note, it seems like they’re trying to eliminate “busts” – but that calls into question how you define “bust”… which leads back to expectations.

And – per my rambling about analytics – no matter how you define a “bust” a lot of performance in the NFL depends on what team and scheme a player winds up on. One man’s garbage is another man’s Chris Clemons, and so forth.

As an example, if Dion Jordan stays in Miami for his entire career and they stay in a 4-3 and misuse him, he becomes a bust?

Lastly, after saying “bust” thirty times, I fully expect A_T_G to capitalize… but here’s something to kick things off…

  62. 62 Anders said at 9:04 AM on April 19th, 2014:

I thing the basic what analystics can give you (and Howie have talked about it as well) is that it can show that this 6’1 OLB only has x% chance of been a success where the 6’3 have y% if everything else is equal.

  63. 63 Baloophi said at 5:13 PM on April 18th, 2014:

I’m not sure what’s going on with this chart, but does anyone remember when that “Sack predictor” thing was going around a couple years ago?

I’m pretty sure many efforts to use analytics to predict future success for NFL players have failed… not to say that people should stop trying, but I think the “team nature” of the game makes assessing individual behavior hard both in terms of projecting future performance as well as simply assessing current ability.

That’s why there’s so much variability in prospect rankings between teams and why scouting philosophies and – more importantly – coaching and schematic differences seem to matter more in player performance than statistical or physical measurables. Those are obviously helpful and important tools, but never the be-all, end-all in terms of player rating.

Baseball – for comparative purposes – has very clear and standardized events and many, many more trials to draw from, meaning statistical projections carry more weight… eg. – a guy who walks a lot will probably walk a lot at the next level, whereas a guy who recovers a lot of fumbles may never fall on a loose ball again.

Things like this and Sackseer never call they can predict it all, but it is an extra tool to help the scouting.

  71. 71 Baloophi said at 6:28 PM on April 18th, 2014:

Yeah – and at least they’re trying to eliminate wasteful picks vs. predict super-stars.

I do still think the unknown factor is how a player is used and coached, however, and who they get to play with.

Shame we’re not having all of our endless interest in the draft paid off this coming week……………………..this May 8th business sucks.

Seriously. The draft always takes an eternity to get here and this year its even worse.

Lol I’m going to the UFC fight Saturday. Thank you Goodell for moving it back!! 🙂 sorry

  75. 75 austinfan said at 5:09 PM on April 18th, 2014:

One thing people forget is how you value a player has a lot to do with WHERE you might draft him – i.e., Eagles might be fine with Clarke in the 5th rd as a situational pass rusher and a project at OLB, but not with Martin in the 1st or 2nd rd as a project at OLB. Van Noy might be great value as a LB who can play all four spots as a late 2nd rd pick but a reach in the 1st round.

Just because a draft site has a player as a 2nd rd pick doesn’t mean the Eagles see him there, they may value him as a 4th rd pick, but still like him. They may see a player as needing two years to bulk up or to learn proper technique. So why visit him if he’s expected to go much earlier? Because in the draft, shit is guaranteed to happen.

You want Boy Scouts running your draft because their motto is “Be Prepared.”

  76. 76 GermanEagle said at 5:16 PM on April 18th, 2014:

I highly doubt that Clarke will last to the 5th round. In fact it wouldn’t shock me to see Chippah being enamoured with his physicals and drafting him in the 3rd…

  77. 77 Maggie said at 9:17 PM on April 18th, 2014:

I believe austinfan was speaking generally about value of draft positions, not about a specific player’s placement.

  78. 78 austinfan said at 10:07 PM on April 18th, 2014:

Yeah, you don’t change your valuation because other teams might draft that player earlier, that just causes you to readjust your draft board on the fly. Stick with your board, and you’ll draft for value, try to get cut and you’ll end up reaching.

  79. 79 Maggie said at 12:46 AM on April 19th, 2014:

But, but, there’s someone I WANT for us, and do not want to see wearing the Cowboys star!!! Lol.

  80. 80 GEAGLE said at 1:23 PM on April 19th, 2014:

Thinking Clark or urban(yes I know they play different positions) will be strongly considered by the birds in the 4th

  81. 81 Media Mike said at 6:50 AM on April 19th, 2014:

This does run in reverse. If the whole world has the player as a 4th round pick, but you draft him in the 2nd because you’re unprepared for what happened a few picks in front of you, your draft stinks.

Even though he’s a great guard, how much better would the Patriots be if they took Mankins in the 3rd round where he should have gone instead of the first. They could have gotten Mankins AND enough extra talent on D to not have choked away two titles with poor DB play.

If the Eagles draft Jaiquan Jarrett in the 4th round (where he should have gone) they could have taken any number of better players in the 2nd round.

  82. 82 A Roy said at 8:05 PM on April 18th, 2014:

There’s so much going on in the calculus of the draft that anything can happen. I suspect the Eagles bring in guys they truly want to take another look at after Pro Days, the combine, the bowls. Being able to bring in only 30 guys doesn’t leave room for many smokescreens. Thing is, they may decide 1) they don’t want the guy after all or 2) they don’t want him as much as another team might want him.
I’m still betting they trade down several positions to gain another pick or two. Thing is, it takes two to tango. You need a willing partner. Just because they go BPA at #22 doesn’t mean they wanted to.

  83. 83 D3FB said at 12:13 AM on April 19th, 2014:

Richardson and Jackson aren’t scheme fits for us.

  84. 84 A Roy said at 5:46 AM on April 19th, 2014:

Richardson may be a bit large, but he did the win the Outland, so you’d think he’s athletic enough underneath it. Jackson is similar size-wise to Herremans. All of the lineman cannot be undersized. Please explain further.

  85. 85 D3FB said at 2:38 PM on April 19th, 2014:

Michael Sam won DPOY in the SEC. College awards mean nothing in terms of projection. Both weigh north of 330. Neither one is remotely athletic enough. Why do you think Richardson went from a fringe first rounder in December to a third day pick now? Because his tape is really bad. Jackson has some nice athleticism for his size but I think he will be taken by a power scheme that values his size well before he hits the point where it would be of value for us to draft him and try to get him to lose weight to be a fit for us. Both are power scheme guards. Our linemen won’t be “undersized” we just won’t have 330 pound fat ass players.

  86. 86 A Roy said at 4:02 PM on April 19th, 2014:

I can agree that Richardson @ 340 is probably too big and that college trophies don’t mean much in the NFL. Still, he has talent.

  87. 87 D3FB said at 12:38 AM on April 20th, 2014:

I watched a bunch of Richardson film, and was very unimpressed. The one thing Jackson does so well is power and locking up the DT’s. He’s pretty average as a puller and finding backers at the second level. Asking him to lose alot of weight may slightly help with those but will also take away from what makes him special. Marcus Martin is a fringe top 100 guy and will likely be valued by a team who wants him to play center before he becomes of value to convert him to guard for us.
We run a zone blocking scheme. All five linemen should be associated with three words: athletic and technician, cerebral.
Zack Martin is the only guard who should be drafted in the first round this year. Su’a Filo is well rounded but not great at anything. The guys I think we will focus on are the converted tackles. Martin, Bitino, Wesley Johnson, Justin Britt, Billy Turner.

  88. 88 Anders said at 1:27 PM on April 19th, 2014:

My favorite day two OL prospect for us is Marcus Martin, great run blocker, mobile enough and super young, sit a year or two and he can replace Mathis (Babre or Tobin replaces Herremans)

  89. 89 GEAGLE said at 1:35 PM on April 19th, 2014:

I like the kid and don’t disagree with you, but wouldn’t drafting a OG in round 2 be a plug and play player? If we are going to sit a guard on our bench for a few years, I feel like the kid from Clemsons ACL injury is an opportunity to get a similar talent to Martin, in like rounds 4 or 5….i guess that would depend if you had a similar grade on him as Martin prior to the injury…then again one is an OT/OG the other is an OG/C so it’s probably not apples to apples

If we are going to draft a OG high and sit him on the bench, why not just eliminate the projecting and go get Grasu from Oregon in next years draft?

  93. 93 Anders said at 9:02 AM on April 19th, 2014:

I do not get mock drafts who has us passing on Barr. He is the perfect Chip Kelly prospect.

  94. 94 GEAGLE said at 10:41 AM on April 19th, 2014:

Fools trying to get too cute. Who does he have us passing on Barr for? A WR or CB I assume,,,CB won’t be drafted before the 4th, WR doesn’t have to be drafted on round 1 if our coaches are good at developing young talent

  95. 95 Right_On1 said at 5:10 AM on April 19th, 2014:

Tommy, I both agree and disagree on Lawrence. I think he’s got the potential to be explosive and have the tools to be a real difference maker at OLB. Saying that I agree that 22 is way too rich – but if he’s there at at 54 he feels like a great choice.

  96. 96 Media Mike said at 6:58 AM on April 19th, 2014:

I don’t know if any of y’all have Sirius, but their NFL station is usually awesome. I just about lost my mind yesterday when Pat Kirwan and Jim Miller ran a two round mock draft and did the following for the Eagles:

    #22 – Ryan Shazier
    #54 – Chris Borland

If this were to actually happen with our draft, how quickly do the pitchforks and torches come out? I wasn’t listening to the radio at the time (Sirius put the picks from the mock out there on Twitter), but I assume ding dong Jim Miller made these picks. In either case, I figured you’d all get a kick over hating these picks.

  97. 97 GermanEagle said at 7:06 AM on April 19th, 2014:

Let me guess, they also had 21 QBs get picked before the Eagles were passing on Clowney?!

  98. 98 Media Mike said at 7:07 AM on April 19th, 2014:

No, they weren’t that nutty (they had QBs dropping), but I damn near puked when I read those two picks on twitter.

  99. 99 GEAGLE said at 7:50 AM on April 19th, 2014:

Lol..that’s just crazy!!! I don’t think either player are good matches to play with Kendricks…Boreland needs to go play ILB for the steelers. Perfect replacement for Farrior.. Dude needs to just worry about playing the run, behind a Big NT that eats up blockers.
    ..
Shazier just reminds me of Kendrick/Lavonte David….he would have to play Kendricks role on our defense….prefer seeing him play Will in a 4-3

  100. 100 Anders said at 9:01 AM on April 19th, 2014:

Why would we draft two ILBs?

  101. 101 GEAGLE said at 12:27 PM on April 19th, 2014:

If we put Boreland next to Kemdrick it would look like the midgets acting out the battle scenes in game of thrones for king Joeffries amusement

  102. 102 GEAGLE said at 7:48 AM on April 19th, 2014:

Tom…I actually totally agree. I tried to hard to like Lawrence because of the lack of pass rushers, but he has soooo much work to do on his game. I don’t see what he can really do well to hang his hat on early in his career…doubt he makes much noise as a pass rusher for a few years, and he damn sure isn’t ready to play the run….dude plays like a warrior, but lacks discapline…like his arm length and hands, but i need to see more, if anyone disagrees please point out a game of his I can watch to maybe see what I’m missing….because taking him in the 30s like people are starting to say sounds crazy to me

  103. 103 GEAGLE said at 8:18 AM on April 19th, 2014:

What do people think of the late round NT from Wisconsin? Kid took a lot of pride in playing the NT grunt who occupied blockers so Boreland could run around torpedoing fools…but he weighs 330lbs, and I have a feeling we like our NTs to be a little smaller and Mobil enough to transition to other fronts…

  104. 104 GEAGLE said at 1:39 PM on April 19th, 2014:
