Star WRs Don’t Stay Put
Posted October 18th, 2014 | 581 Comments »I was shocked to find out that the Seahawks had traded Percy Harvin while driving home on Friday night. Harvin was a dynamic talent and that offense isn’t exactly loaded with great individual talent. Then I remembered this is Percy Harvin we’re talking about. He has worn out his welcome everywhere. Seattle played very well while Harvin was hurt for most of last year. Did they really need him?
You can’t help but think of the DeSean Jackson situation when you hear about this move. Both Harvin and Jackson were big stars in college, but both fell in the draft due to bad reputations with NFL teams. Both Harvin and Jackson have looked dominant at times in the NFL, but each guy has left his team wanting more. For Harvin, it was all about staying healthy. He has played in 60 of 86 career games. With Jackson, it was about going from dynamic deep threat to being a complete WR.
Both the Eagles and Seahawks thought their star players were worth getting rid of. Pete Carroll has developed a strong culture in Seattle. Chip Kelly is trying to develop one in Philadelphia. Both organizations decided the fit wasn’t right and made dramatic moves. You can argue whether the moves were good or bad. I think there are so many variables that is tough to truly judge the moves. I just find it fascinating that the teams were willing to move on from stars. That shows real confidence from each organization.

I wrote a piece for BGN on the Eagles improved pass rush.
The team is on pace for 51 sacks. That number is a bit skewed by just coming off an 8-sack game, but the defense had consecutive 4-sack games before that so this isn’t like the team had one good game and it came out of nowhere. The Skins have 15 sacks this year, but 10 came in a blowout win over the Jaguars. Aside from that game, the Skins aren’t getting to the QB.
You wonder how the return of Mychael Kendricks will affect the defense. He is the best blitzer and also the best coverage LB. When you send him, he can help the rush. When you use him to cover, he can help shut down the middle of the field or a checkdown target.

Desean and Harvin are two very different situations..

Chip inherited Desean, and jettisoned Desean at a time when he was still in the culture phase of team Bulding.,

Pete Carrol, traded a 1st, 7th and a 3rd in the next draft,for Harvin and immediately gave him a new contract…. Desean had to go for the culture we are trying to build…seattle already has a Super Bowl culture/strong veteran locker room in place. Carrol is past the culture building phase..established veteran locker rooms are supposed to be able to handle a problem child or two..

We were also,one of the most explosive offenses in the NFL that still had a ton of fire power without Jackson…Offense was never the strong point of seattle, and now they lost one of their more explosive weapons., say what you will, but seattle just got easier to gameplan to stop…

Curious to see the effects this has on its locker room..allegedly Marshawn was PISSED and almost didn’t get on the bus to St Louis…they play a rival Rams who always steps up and plays them tough..curious to see where Seattles head is coming off an Embarressing loss.. Can that locker room stick together, make a statement and wipe the floor with their Division rival the way we did shutting out the Giants? Or will this cause trouble in their locker room and see them lose their second straight game against an inferior opponent?

Desean and Harvins also differed contractually… this Harvin trade is for a 4th round(conditional) that can go as high as,a,second rounder, but I doubt he reaches those incentives playing in NY?..

I would never guessed them trading away a key piece, mid season without clearing it with the leaders before pulling the trigger… Leaders obviously weren’t consulted if BeastMode was flipping out and almost not got on the bus for the team trip yesterday….

For all I know, that locker room is strong enough to handle this, and they will handle business this week….but I think Carrol is playing Russian Roulette with his locker room to be jettisoning key players Midseason, weakening your arsenal when you are trying to defend your Super Bowl crown..

You are playing with Fire, weakening your offense when you play in a division so tough that you can end up finishing 3rd in your division……. Maybe it doesn’t effect the lockers room and they stampede the Rams…but that teams wasn’t deep with offensive weapons to begin with…what happens if Baldwin or Kearse get injured? A lot of season left to play…and Seattle just became easier to defend..wonder how this impacts their run game, since us losing Desean was supposed to be the end of the world for our run game….Harvin was their Desean, aka field stretcher, home run hitter…..seahawks can kiss that jet sweep they like to run with Harvin goodbye lol

Things is, he was more like a 175 pound RB for them, no field stretcher. I don’t have the stats right in front of me, but I read that he wasn’t a deep threat for them more than once.

People are forgetting that CK values accuracy .
We don’t know what Cunningham would have been had he had a coach that cared about offense or the maturation of his QB.
Agree. In my personal opinion, Cunningham could’ve been one of the all time greats if he’d had better coaching early in his career and had player in a system that utilized his talents fully (something like what the 49ers run now). He was ahead of his time.
The same could be said for Vick.

Look at 1998. That was the year Cunningham could have had EVERY year if the Eagles coaching staff would have done a proper teaching job with him.
QBs running often is a dead end and diminishes their passing skills. Cunningham, as a smart vet who could read a D and still rocket the ball out of his hands in a accurate manner when throwing deep, was a revelation in 1998. Shame it was in Minnesota.

I have no idea what’s going on in that locker room..but when I look at their offense, it must have been really problematic for them to make this move now, because I don’t see a plethora of weapons on that team to where they can so easily jettison and replace one of their better playmakers That creates space for their offense…The defending Super Bowl champions, with THAT established championship locker room with veterans like Sherm, Kam. Earl, BEASTMODE, couldn’t keep it together, make it work for the next 4 months so they can wait to replace Harvin in the offseason? Not only do they lose a key weapon, but this sounds like they didn’t clear i with the leaders and key players like BEASTMODE

Wow, Foles usually comes off as a pretty laid back guy even as he’s leading but he put some real anger in his voice when the Giants did Sproles dirty. Would love to see that side come out more often.

They’d have to consider him depending on the price. Not sure what his contract is like but if he is still working off his rookie deal it could work. If Shady ever went down long term I’d be much happier with a Spiller Sproles combo than a Sproles Polk combo. Not because I dislike Polk, but I feel like Spiller’s skillset more closely matches Shady’s.
Spiller is cheap on the salary end, but a free agent at the end of the year. I’d trade a 7th or Dennis Kelly for Spiller, but nothing more. He’ll look to sign with a new team this off-season in order to get #1 carries.
Spiller, by virtue of being a free agent at the end of the year, isn’t worth more than a 7th rounder or a player for player swap for the Eagles. He wants to be a feature back, so signing here is a non-option.
If Cleveland could cut bait on Ben Taint, Spiller might help them upgrade the talent around Hoyer.
If Cleveland cut Tate, its because West and Crowell is good enough. The Browns is already 3 deep at RB, no need to pick up another RB
Tate is injury prone, Crowell is a fringe player at best, and West got jumped on the depth chart by fringe Crowell. A chance to upgrade with a guy like Spiller, who has low usage and knows Pettine from time together at Buffalo, is a move teams make often.
Crowell is not a fringe player. If it wasnt for off the field problems, he would have been 1st RB taken this year

As we speak im watching Baby brother Erik fly around against Mykals alma mater Cal….. I love this kid. He needs to join Mykal in philly, I think the world of Mykal, and I think Erik has a chance to be even better. Kid flies around and make plays… I think watching UCLAs Linebacking corp is my favorite part of this years college season.. Between Kendricks, Myles Jack and Owamagbe Odighizuwa who Really flies off that edge.. HOWIE visited UCLA practice the week we played the Niners..and I see an eagle or two every week tweet about baby Kendrick..

You can’t keep a guy who was doing what Harvin was reportedly doing, and only a dysfunctional, desperate team like the Jets would be willing to take him, if they knew what was going on (and I’m willing to bet they did).
The fact that the Hawks got a pick for Harvin and we got nothing for Jackson probably has to do with the Jets desperation and the contracts of the 2 players

They were able to trade him because of the difference in contractual situations…if you wanted Desean you had to give us a draft pick, and immediately give Desean a new deal… jets gave up a pick for Harvin, because they DONT have to immediately give him a new deal…

He was traded away MONTHS after punching team mates.. He didn’t punch anyone on wednesday
I think the contract situations were similar for Harvin and DeSean (before he was cut). Both had superstar contracts, but non-guaranteed (in fact, I think they were set to make about the same amount, ~$10 million/year). Don’t think you necessarily had to give DeSean a new contract if you traded for him (unless his agent was demanding that, which might have been the case).
the agent wasn`t gonna get paid unless jackson got a new contract…part of the reason(?) for his indication that he deserved a new contract in that locker room interview.
I always laugh when people write off a guy getting into fights with teammates, undermining the coach, not showing up for practice, etc. as if it’s no big deal and it’s something an organization should be able to deal with. At any other job, acting like an irrational, narcissistic psycho gets you fired really quickly. Would you want to go into the office if you had to deal with a guy who routinely did the kind of things Harvin is said to have done?
Football’s a team game and self-centered pricks like Harvin, T.O., DeSean Jackson, etc. will inevitably wear out their welcome and start to undermine the morale and camaraderie of the locker room if you keep them around. There’s a reason we have the phrase “team cancer”. Kudos to guys like Chip Kelly and Carroll for having the balls to tell these guys to take a hike.
This. Too much of that stuff is written off as just being part of the game or whatever, but there’s no way these guys aren’t damaging the team in some way with their actions.
Football has taken far too long to drag itself out of the stone age, and it seems like coaches like Chip and Carroll are the guys paving the way.
The last straw appeared to be when he refused to go back into the game last week.

He won’t go top 10. Too much stacked OL/DL talent this year for the basement dwellers to pass on. Top 30 for sure though. He might not wow people at the combine but AJ Green didn’t do that either.
Reason why I said top 10. Kevin White is everything you want in a WR, but if White does not go top 10, it should also means guys like Funchess, Cooper, Parker etc. could fall.
Here is a mock draft (early) that does not have him in the first and the first WR taken goes 17, but both of those things would surprise me
Ugh I would hate for him to go to the Giants. I don’t see White as the same athletes as Julio, Megatron, Gordon and DT. That doesn’t mean he’s not athletic but he seems to be a low 4.4 guy like Watkins/Green on the tape I’ve seen so far.

Trae Waynes and Kurtis Drummond from Michigan State. Waynes has been compared to Kyle Fuller already but he’s more lanky. Drummond is a solid all-around safety.
Aundrey Walker guard from USC, would be a good pickup if he can polish up his fundamentals.
I really liked Ty last year, but not sure he has taken the next step. There is a few other WRs Im more interested in.
I do love Erik Kendricks, but not a fan of McKinney. Outside of been big, really hasnt impressed me. He looks very slow towards the ball.
There is also quite a few pass rushers and RBs who are of interest too me, but way to many to list.
Way too many pass rushers to start listing…plus we could very well keep our current OLBs for another couple years and not draft any this year
Even if we keep Graham and Cole, we should still draft one before we have zero. We might lose Graham in FA and who knows how much Cole has left.
I will add one guy who I think Kelly will love and that is Shaq Riddick, he is 6’5, 242 lbs and is pretty much perfect sized OLB in the Ziggy Ansah and JPP mold (both would be perfect OLBs for us)

You know what frustrates me? Percy Harvin has been traded TWICE for a total of four draft picks. And the Eagles couldn’t get anything for DeSean Jackson? DJax was a way more proven commodity – without the injury history. Seriously, the the cover up surrounding Jackson’s release rivals that of JFK. The Howie Roseman quote that WIP uses to advertise his weekly show is “I will never lie to you”. Well, somebody isn’t telling the truth though. C’mon, man!!!
You’re right. We got nothing for DeSean. Which is definitely too bad. The only thing I can figure is that Chip wanted him out of town well before training camp began, come hell or high water. Probably the other GMs figured that out so nobody made a decent offer. Along comes Dan Snyder, known for having a small brain and a large wallet.

Seriously though, given the timing of everything it seems like DeSean’s value disappeared. Teams suspected he would be released and there was a WR rich draft coming. Add in the contract and the cost was far too high (including compensation) compared to the risk of waiting to see what would happen. You have to think in terms of economics, where we as fans typically think in terms of talent and highlights.

If they did explain what happened, they’d inevitably get bashed for smearing Jackson on his way out the door, handling it without class, etc. They were in a no-win situation. I’m fine not knowing exactly went down. Chip Kelly is a guy whose multi-million dollar livelihood literally depends on how he handles decisions like that one so when he determined Jackson had to go he was putting his money where his mouth is. That leads me to believe he had a good reason.

Harvin can be cut without penalty after this year. Desean they would have had to pay 10 million this year and be stuck w an escalating contract after that.

The Eagles 100% boxed themselves into a corner because their desire to get rid of Jackson made it out there prior to a team asking them about Jackson.
The move to dump Jackson off of this roster has been beaten to death, but the failure to get anything in the process and have an appropriate replacement identified was far less than ideal.
The Eagles tried to trade him 1 year before he got cut. So no, the Eagles didnt box themselves into a corner, there was just no team who was willing to give any picks for Jackson+his contract

I agree with you there in that they didn’t allow their failure to reap any value in return to keep them from doing what they wanted to do with Jackson. Jackson, or any other player in the league, is sunk cost when you sign him. The worst thing to do is hold onto a guy longer than you want him just because of what you’ve paid him to that point. It’s just less than ideal that they didn’t get any value for a 3 time pro bowler.
If I were an Jets fan, I’d be pretty pissed about this trade. It’s basically an admission that they did the wrong thing by not acquiring DeSean last summer. Idzik was watching DeSean catch 50+ yard TD bombs this year (as he has done in the past) while the Jets went 1-6 and when you had DeSean’s former O-coordinator and QB on the team. The stories I’ve been reading about Percy, he sounds worse than DeSean ever did in the locker room.
I’m actually just pissed the Jets didn’t even give us a 7th rounder or something for DeSean when they’re giving up a minimum 4th round pick for Harvin mid-season. And we have to play DeSean twice a year. Thanks, Idzik.

I feel like a lot of “character concerns” are overblown in the draft evaluation process, but Winston is one guy I would not touch with a 10 foot pole.

If Maclin wants 10+ mill he should be gone. But I doubt he demands that much.
He’s getting 6 million this year. He’s having the best season of his career right now. Even if he does give us a discount, I’d expect him to be between 7.5/8.5 million per year. He could always point at what we paid for Desean too. I just hope we don’t make that mistake again.
I be perfectly fine with 8.5 for Maclin. Jackson was different animal, remember he got a very low guaranteed part and also had added value as PR.
I be honest, I would love Thomas on this team, but I just know there is no way we trade for him and cant see Denver let him hit FA.
The WR I want to trade for is Patterson.
The biggest problem is we have sooo much home grown talent to pay next year, I don’t see how we could afford DT, he will command at a minimum 12 mil a year. He might not get Calvin Johnson money, but he will be way up there.

Best you can hope for is quality free agents who are perfect fits for us like Malcolm Jenkins when teams wear backing up Brinks truck for BYRD and Ward,,,or Barwin when Banner was using his Barmitzvha savings on Paul Kruger
I doubt the Vikings trade Patterson unless they get like Harvin value again. They also need to keep some pieces in place so they can avoid total rebuilding mode.
Consider the WR talent (again) in the upcoming draft, I would hate to trade a 1st for Patterson, but had it been a 2013 like draft and we had a late 1st, I would have done it.
I also hope Kate Upton and Karen Gillan will need rescuing from some type of disaster, become my odd day / even day bed partners, and will go unicorn riding with me to the official ceremony where the 28th Amendment to the Constitution is officially ratified that ends the practice of overrating Pittsburgh and NY players in HOF discussions.

In two Offseasons of chip/Howie/gable collaborations, what have you seen that leads you to think their is any hope we spend 50million on another teams players? Especially when we have so many young players to extend?

Harvin, as opposed to Jackson, has never really produced on an NFL level.
Oddly he’s got 2twice as much talent as cooper but has put up similar numbers.
Everytime I see Winston’s face, a huge amount of despise arises. I really hope he will be drafted before pick no. 32 though for the Eagles to stay out of trouble.
Imagine how his rape victim feels knowing that the university, local PD, and football boosters ran interference on the investigation and he’s walking around completely free.

As wasteful as the Harvin trade was for Seattle, a first, third, and fourth for a guy who didn’t produce much on a title team wasn’t even half as bad as three firsts and a second for a QB who isn’t good and is always hurt.

What people don’t get is that Desean’s contract was never going to run beyond last year, the way it was written. The Eagles didn’t want to pick it up and no one else did either. From the day it was written, it was going to end before this season, and either a new one was going to be written for him here or somewhere else.

Seeing ANYONE in the agony Victor Cruz was in last week is horrible. I’ll also say that (for selfish reasons) that the injury didn’t occur so that he could help them have a better, but still very long, shot at upsetting the Cry boys today. That to me, would’ve really helpednot only our divisional standing, but the emptiness of an Eagles bye week. It’s hard enough to shake off the shellacking we gave the Giants last week. But add in the loss of the teams heart & soul in Cruz, I’m fearful that the Gmen just lay down & let Dallas steam roll them. My hope is that instead, they use it as a rallying cry of “let’s win this one for Victor!”. On a related note, they sure could’ve used him against that defense. I STIKL do not for THE LOVE OF ALL THAT’S HOLY understand how a D that was so bad it was historic last year, loses Ware & Sean Lee & SOMEHOW against all odds & logic, they are somehow a borderline formidable top ten defense. Not cool at ALL.

But they’ve looked depressingly dominant in those games. Good defense & O-line & of course Demarco Murray looking unstoppable. Hearing this would do my heart good because right now, I’m seeing so few weaknesses, that I’ll admit to looking to future injuries to slow them down. People praise their OL, but in reality, 2 of the 5 offensive lineman are suspect Doug Free was a bum in 2012, since then his runblocking has been good, but he is still a major liability in pass protection, no surprise you always see them stick the TE on his side…I’ll take Barwin, COLE, BG, Curry against Doug Free all day!

The Guard Ronald Leary wouldn’t even be one of our top 6 offensive lineman. Decent run blocker, suspect in pass protection. Still drives them crazy with his inconsistent pad level.. Our DL hit the sled every day, fundamentally sound beast of a DL we boast, bet our boys get under his pads and win more than their fair share of battles against him…

Yeah it was pretty weird. I guess the coverage team has gotten used to following the flow of the receiving team’s blockers, assuming they are getting into position – rather than luring them out of the way as in this case.
Let’s not forget the ball will be way over their heads as they run down, they probably won’t see it until the last second before it is caught or hits the ground, so I guess they can be forgiven for assuming they’re ok if they just follow the other team… until now.

Rams making cowboys win over Seattle look much less impressive.
I won’t take anything away from their win…. But I think it’s absurd to say that was more impressive than us shutting out a rival… Cowboys had a good game, but I doubt anyone will say seattle was playing one of its better games…. Still their are some lessons to be learned from Dallas win… Like roughing up Richard Sherman,..he made the tackle but a couple times he was getting up slow, holding his shoulder because WRs were trying to truck him and get physical with him… He stays on the left side so we have to stick Cooper, ERTZ, James Casey, Jordan in front of Sherm and have those big pass catchers get physical with him… Split Lane out wide and throw a screen to that side and let Lane maul Sherm… Gotta rough him up….. Force Kam Chancellor to have to matchup with ERTZ or Sproles…… I would like to split Sproles out wide once and see how Richard Sherman defends Sproles out of sheer curiosity lol

Our front 7 can do well against seattle OL… Use some mush rush, keep Wilson in the pocket, we did well against Kapernick… I also think our front 7 matches up well against power runningbacks like BEASTMODE… Rather play against Demarcus Murruy/BEASTMODE type running attacks instead of having to defend burners like Jammal CHarles or Giovani bernard

Wilson is the most effective when the run game and play-action and boot action is working, but every QB is almost like that. Wilson or Tannehill would still be perfect in this scheme (also consider even our bad version of the OL is better than both have now and the overall offensive talent is far superior)

But even then it’s not an impossible game. At worst we are going into Thanksgiving at 8-3 with two games to play against Dallas. Plus Thanksgiving is on a short week. We play the previous Sunday at 1pm home vs. the titans. The Cowboys are currently scheduled for the Sunday night game in New York. Then they have a 3:30 flight back home. They won’t get back to Dallas until 4 or 5am EST. That could be a huge advantage.
