Say What?

Sorry for the long wait. Long, crazy day at work.

I’m going to keep this short for now. To those of us on the outside, trading for Sam Bradford makes little sense. But Chip isn’t on the outside.

Either Chip loves Bradford and thinks he can turn him into a great QB…

or this is part of an elaborate climb up the ladder to get Marcus Mariota.

I do not love NFL Sam Bradford so I’m hoping this is part of a move to get Mariota. I still trust Chip, but there is no denying that this was completely unexpected and is highly confusing.

Lots more to come later.

  40. 40 Stanimal said at 9:32 PM on March 10th, 2015:

Well we have become a dream team for the rest of the NFC East…

  41. 41 jaws80 said at 9:32 PM on March 10th, 2015:

One way this makes sense is if Chip did not want to lose picks to move up for Mariotta and, that he tried to extend Foles with the extra cap they have. And Foles said no, or Foles in other ways has let the Eagles know that he is not happy in Philly and will leave after next year.

Lots of reasons for Foles not to be happy here – and biggest one might be after a 27-2 season he did not feel appreciated, from coach and fans. He thanked the “fans who supported me” in his farewell tweet instead of just saying “fans” and another family member said the family (and Foles?) are very happy to see him leave Philly.

So, Bradford for a year with full backing of the coach who traded for him is a better option than a Foles who wants to leave.

  42. 42 oreofestar said at 9:35 PM on March 10th, 2015:

Bs in that scenario I’d still rather take Hundley at 20 Bradford can’t stay healthy and even if he could he’s mediocre

  43. 43 BC1968 said at 9:37 PM on March 10th, 2015:

Foles had 0 leverage. If the Eagles wanted to re-sign him and he said he’s not appreciated they could’ve sat him as the 3rd qb. Then he goes out on the market next year with no one still having a clue about him. No way the Eagles tried to extend him, or were they thinking about it. The only way would’ve been if he didn’t get injured last year and he won a few playoffs games, then yes, he would’ve had leverage.

  44. 44 kimsarah said at 11:14 PM on March 10th, 2015:

Any Plan B if he doesn’t get Mariotta?
    I forgot, there is Tebow.

  45. 45 Alistair Middlemiss said at 9:33 PM on March 10th, 2015:

Chip must be really sure that Bradford is his guy. If these moves this season don’t work out he will be gone regardless of all the good he has done in the first 2 years.

I mean this is serious big balls to walk away from Maclin McCoy and Foles who got you 14-4. At least we have a full draft to think about now…… Just need a starting Safety Corner, RG, WR and RB this draft or scrapheap of FA…

  46. 46 A_T_G said at 9:43 PM on March 10th, 2015:

    Don’t forget QB.

  47. 47 jaws80 said at 9:53 PM on March 10th, 2015:

Chip as GM, you only had two jobs. Keep the offense as it is (sign Maclin). And then add and add to the Defense. Really even if left Maclin go and focused on adding DB free agents he would be doing pretty well right now.

  48. 48 kimsarah said at 11:15 PM on March 10th, 2015:

Put chip in charge of the Phillies and see if he can deal Howard.

  49. 49 eagleyankfan said at 9:33 PM on March 10th, 2015:

To all you chop haters n doubters… You were right… I’m sorry to have doubted you…

  50. 50 Honest_T said at 9:33 PM on March 10th, 2015:

Chip is all in with this move. Bradford is your QB, this was not a flip b/c we paid way above market value and Foles contract and youth are more valuable Ina trade. Yes, Chip is getting fleeced by everyone in this go round because he is using his value of players, not their perceived market value. This is where Howie could really help Chip out.

I’m actually really excited for the season now because Chip has put himself in a position where he has to deliver.

What surprises me is that we let Maclin, McCoy, and Desean walk, but everyone flips out when we move Foles!?!

  51. 51 GENETiC-FREAK said at 9:35 PM on March 10th, 2015:

No its not the fact everyone flipped out Foles got traded it coz Eagles got nothing much in return ie swap 1st round picks.. Eagles actually give up more for Bradford

  52. 52 Iskar36 said at 9:37 PM on March 10th, 2015:

Let’s face it, the most likely outcome of this trade is Bradford gets injured and we just traded Foles and a second round pick for a third round pick.

  53. 53 oreofestar said at 9:47 PM on March 10th, 2015:

    That’s still an awful trade

  54. 54 Iskar36 said at 9:53 PM on March 10th, 2015:

You mean telling the Rams “Hey, if you take Foles off our hands, we’ll let you move up from the third round to the second round” is not a great trade… SMH. In Chip I DIStrust

  55. 55 Jarock said at 9:37 PM on March 10th, 2015:

I would have been perfectly fine with this trade had the Eagles been getting a surfeit of picks. That we gave up assets for Bradford who is every bit as brittle, more expensive, and less proven in the scheme makes me want to shoot someone.

  56. 56 Honest_T said at 9:43 PM on March 10th, 2015:

I love what Chip is doing, but his main problem is that he only works from his value of the players. i have no idea who our RB or WRs will be, but I don’t doubt that we will have a top 10’offense once the season starts…and then we’ll get to watch Sanchez throw away another season after Bradford gets injured.

    Just almost.

  69. 69 Jarock said at 9:43 PM on March 10th, 2015:

Worse. Much worse. Honest fans knew Dawkins was coming to the end. Much love and respect for him as a player, but he couldn’t cover anymore by the end of his tenure. We let him leave without a good backup plan. That sucked and we are still trying to replace him.

Today we traded a young promising QB who we were paying peanuts for an older promising QB who’s being paid like he was Peyton Manning. On top of that, we gave up picks, and oh by the way, he’s only started about 60% of the career games as a pro because he hasn’t been able to stay healthy. So, we not only have an unproven QB in our system, but one who can’t stay healthy that we are paying as if he was a league MVP. Sure, that makes sense.

Imagine what Foles would have done with the Rams? Maybe it is unfair to compare “Foles in Chip’s offense” to “Bradford in the Ram’s offense.”

Maybe Chip is betting that if his system can make Foles into a 27-2 QB, Bradford can be a 33-3??? that 27-2 year really messes with my head.

  106. 106 Ark87 said at 9:51 PM on March 10th, 2015:

The are lots of better candidates to test the Chip Kelly bump on that don’t result in paying an injury prone qb with few physical tools to speak of a boat load of cash in addition up draft picks. No way to spin this as good. Perhaps you can say, this may not ruin the franchise as bad as you think. But it’s just bad decision making no matter how you spin it. I can’t believe how well the the Rams got out of that situation with Bradford, a year after us getting pinned into releasing Jaccpot.

  107. 107 jaws80 said at 10:00 PM on March 10th, 2015:

A “Jaccpot” mention, oh, i had put that in my past…. i am pretty sure Eagles would have had the cap space to keep Desean, Maclin and McCoy on offense. And sign Graham and Maxwell on defense. while keeping Foles as well. Hard to argue that just signing our own guys from two seasons ago and last year and adding Maxwell would not make us much better off for next year. And a trio of Desean, Maclin and McCoy all getting very well paid could have been a bit of a pack, keep others in line as long as they are getting paid and tons of respect, even if they were not the best fits… i need to move on, this is not healthy.

  108. 108 shah8 said at 10:07 PM on March 10th, 2015:

I have to go to work. I’ll go on record as predicting a good start for Bradford as the Eagles QB before the inevitable ACL tear while tripping over his throwing arm,

  155. 155 Greg Richards said at 9:54 PM on March 10th, 2015:

Call me crazy or delusionally trying to make myself feel better, but I’m starting to feel better about this trade. What would be the price for moving up for Mariota? Likely 1st and 2nd this year and next plus Foles or some other quality player. If, and I understand some of you disagree with this, you don’t believe that Foles ever has a chance of being an elite QB and think that Bradford does, then is Foles and essentially a next year’s second is arguably a better fit on risk/reward scale than giving up much more to move up for a rookie QB. I understand the injury risk, which they’ve protected themselves against somewhat, but Bradford isn’t as old as I thought. The guy is entering his 7th year. I was thinking he was close to 30. Bradford is 27 years old. He’ll be 28 in November. Born in November of 1987. Foles was born on Jan 20, 1989. 15 months older than Foles despite being drafted 3 years earlier. If you keep Foles, either he’s gone for nothing after the year or you sign him to a market-rate extension and when you obviously aren’t sold on his abilities that’s not something you want to do. The same argument applies somewhat to extending Bradford but at least you(Kelly) believe in him. From their perspective, this might be the sweet spot between keeping Foles and giving up too much future compensation by trying to move high in the draft. One could argue they should have just traded Foles and not acquired Bradford but it’s pretty apparent that his stand-alone trade value wasn’t as high as I or others thought it should be.

  159. 159 Stanimal said at 9:59 PM on March 10th, 2015:

I mean it kinda makes sense logically. We could either cripple our team in the long run on someone who may or may not pan out or we can go into the season knowing we are already screwed but the only place we can go is up with multiple young players who may or may not end up being good.

  160. 160 ICDogg said at 10:01 PM on March 10th, 2015:

Well, I can be even more optimistic than that… it is just possible that Bradford stays healthy and plays well for us. I’m not sold that this is what’s going to happen, but it could.

  161. 161 xeynon said at 10:00 PM on March 10th, 2015:

Foles has accomplished more in three seasons than Bradford has in five. In addition to being younger, cheaper, and better versed in the offense. That’s a pretty big flaw in your theory, don’t you think?

  162. 162 Greg Richards said at 10:04 PM on March 10th, 2015:

I think from their point of view upside is more important than past accomplishments.

  163. 163 jaws80 said at 10:08 PM on March 10th, 2015:

I’ve been a big Foles fan, but i can squint my eyes and see a bigger picture where Bradford is at least as good a prospect going forward than Foles. So for me Bradford or Foles, i dont care. Lets see what Bradford can do in Chip’s offense.

If there was no Mariotta this year, so no anticipation for a trade up. Then i would likely think this is a fine trade, if Chip likes Bradford more, great. even with the picks, it basically is a Foles for Bradford trade in the long run.

And just with the picks, it turns out Rams got the better of Chip, or more likely that in the league other GMs value Bradford over Foles, so Chip in terms of value probably did just fine.

But the Marriotta anticipation skews all of this.

  164. 164 xeynon said at 10:11 PM on March 10th, 2015:

I don’t see any evidence that Bradford is even as good a prospect as Foles going forward. But grant that he is – how do you justify giving up high picks AND Foles to get him? And paying him franchise QB money when Foles makes peanuts?

There is no way to rationalize this trade. The Eagles lost in literally every way. They gave up better picks, a better cap situation, and quite likely a better player. It was a fleecing through and through.

  165. 165 Honest_T said at 10:06 PM on March 10th, 2015:

We all watch Foles miss receivers last year and repeatedly throw off his back foot, which is why no one would commit to him as the starter, and we get all the Mariota talk. I don’t see how swapping out Foles for Bradford turns a 10 win team into a 5 win team.

  166. 166 xeynon said at 10:09 PM on March 10th, 2015:

And yet Foles last year put up a higher passer rating than Bradford has for his entire career. To say nothing of his stellar 2013. Hell, in 2012, playing on an absolute dumpster fire of an offense, Foles put up a passer rating comparable to Bradford’s career number. You are not making a strong argument.

  167. 167 Honest_T said at 10:12 PM on March 10th, 2015:

And Bradford put up better college numbers. Who cares, it is apples and oranges. Chip’s players have career years, even while leaving tons of points on the field because his system works as long as you don’t turn the ball over. If abrasions can deliver the ball to the receivers, he too will have a career year.

  168. 168 xeynon said at 10:24 PM on March 10th, 2015:

If college numbers (vs. actual NFL production) mattered, Timmy Chang, Ty Detmer, and David Klingler would be NFL Hall of Famers. Again, you are not making a good argument.

  173. 173 Jarock said at 9:56 PM on March 10th, 2015:

Let’s make this clear. Sam Bradford could end up leading the Eagles to multiple Superbowls, be league MVP multiple times under Chip and this would STILL BE AN AWFUL TRADE. You do not judge trades based on a the best possible outcome. You judge them on the most likely outcome and on the current history of the players involved. There is no way to spin this as a positive for the Eagles and I tend to be a rose glasses optimist when it comes to offseason moves.

  174. 174 kevinlied said at 10:00 PM on March 10th, 2015:

Exactly right. We excuse poor-value trades after the fact when they happen to work out, results-wise. That doesn’t mean they aren’t bad.

  175. 175 xeynon said at 10:13 PM on March 10th, 2015:

I believe Howie has talked about making a distinction between bad decisions and bad outcomes, and how critical it is not to mistake one for the other. Chip clearly doesn’t understand the difference between decisions and outcomes.

  176. 176 SteveH said at 10:34 PM on March 10th, 2015:

This is a concept many do not understand in all walks of life.

A decision is not good or bad based on the outcome. You can make good decisions and get bad outcomes, and you can make bad decisions and get good outcomes. Both are possible.

You want to maximize your good decisions because over the long run it will maximize your good outcomes, but does not guarantee that every good decision will lead to a good outcome.

  177. 177 xeynon said at 10:39 PM on March 10th, 2015:

Indeed. Chip’s decision-making process appears to consist of “Chip see, Chip want, Chip do”. Which is a decidedly less beneficial strategy in the long run.

  178. 178 Sean Stott said at 9:57 PM on March 10th, 2015:

  180. 180 xeynon said at 9:58 PM on March 10th, 2015:

The point has been brought up, but it doesn’t make any sense. The NFL isn’t the NBA. Teams go from mediocre to Super Bowl champs all the time. All it takes is luck and the right draft pick.

    Story time:

I have what I consider an above average sense of direction. My wife has what I would kindly call below average. Sometimes when we are driving I will realize that we will be taking a somewhat circuitous route. I will turn off the main roads and onto unknown roads. I will use the mountains and sun as reference points and make decisions on which way to turn at each intersection. Usually, my wife is pretty agreeable as we leave painted roads, and paved roads if I am lucky, behind. Occasionally, however, she gets annoyed and frustrated before being awed at where we reemerge into civilization.

Chip has left the paved roads far behind and the road ahead looks like a whole bunch of z’s and w’s all strung out in a line. I won’t call it the Black Bear Road because of the racial implications, but if this doesn’t magically come out near Telluride, I am going to be very disappointed.

  214. 214 Avery Greene said at 10:08 PM on March 10th, 2015:

At least I was able to make all the stages:

Denial and Isolation – I got home from class, saw the details, and locked myself in the bathroom with my bottle of tequila.

Anger – I yelled at the wall as if it could do something about the trade

Bargaining – I sat on twitter hoping for more news, just begging Schefter or someone to say that there’s a 3rd team.

Depression – I hung my Brian Dawkins jersey back in the closet, and said goodbye to a hopeful era of football.

Acceptance – I’m online and I’m just stunned. I said I was in the backseat of the wagon, but I’m thinking about laying down in the trunk and sucking on my thumb. Someone read me a bedtime story…

  220. 220 GEAGLE said at 10:09 PM on March 10th, 2015:

To be honest, I’m happy to have Bradford! Would have rather have foles, but I’d much rather have Bradford then MM and Hundley…
    ..
This is way better then trading away the draft for over rated college kids. We have a QB our coaches view as an upgrade and we actually have our draft to fix all the offensive holes chip created. I’m way happier with this team today then I was two days ago.
    ..
With that said I don’t like what we paid. Don’t like our GM being treated like an amateur. But not getting draft picks for Foles is a blessing in disguise, we now won’t have the ammunition to trade for MM and still be able to fill holes
    ..
Only think I dong like about Bradford is the injuries, but how can I be too down where chip always brings In injured damaged goods.
    ..
Don’t like our coach being treated like a young Buck during trades or reaching for Ducks 3 rounds earlier then we need to…
    ..
Truth is I’m way happier about our team then I was two days ago. Welcome to the Bradford era, hopefully he is and stays healthy. Rather have a pocket passer like him then Fast running QB like MM or EJ “Manuel” Hundley…

  221. 221 Cafone said at 10:11 PM on March 10th, 2015:

Welp, that caps it. GEAGLE, the guy who is always wrong about everything, loudly and usually with profane language, likes the deal.

    We’re screwed.

  222. 222 FairOaks said at 10:19 PM on March 10th, 2015:

That, or it guarantees we are either drafting Hundley or trading for MM.

  223. 223 wee2424 said at 10:46 PM on March 10th, 2015:

Doubt he likes it. He is just saying it out of pride and trying to save face. Almost everything he vehemently wanted and said to the point it was at times inappropriate did not happen or completely failed on him. As a human being There is no way he is happy, and he can deny it all he wants but it is almost a little sad how he is trying to spin it like he is happy.

  224. 224 HawaiianEagle said at 10:16 PM on March 10th, 2015:

Concur. Like MM but having all our picks and a QB coach wants ok by me. Lets let Bradford okay a game before we label him bust.

  225. 225 wee2424 said at 10:27 PM on March 10th, 2015:

Let’s hope he makes it through TC. That might be too wishful. Let’s hope he makes it through mini camp. Good news is that if he doesn’t Mark freaken Sanchez is running the offense. Who cares who is at QB though because we have a good slot WR and Riley Cooper. I would say we could run the ball with Shady, shoot I forgot. Our aging Oline will be good enough for us to win games though. In all seriousness I was behind the Shady deal. However that means you may need to improve on other areas of offense. Besides the draft and counting on rookies or second year players like Huff our options are dwindling. Go ahead, be optimistic about the defense, but this offense has taken a serious step or two back and the line just got another year closer to collecting SSI. What’s worse is that Chip doesn’t seem to be liked or trusted by offensive FA. You can pull these moves if you are considered a Bill B, and have a Tom Brady. Chip isn’t BB, and Sanchez and Bradford combined isn’t Tom Brady.

  226. 226 wee2424 said at 11:12 PM on March 10th, 2015:

Lol this isn’t his rookie year. I wouldn’t call him a complete bust but he isn’t real far off considering he was a #1 overall pick. He will be better then Sanchez if he can ever stay on the field. Chip you better get this Oline right to protect him. He is fragile. QBs don’t normally tear 2 ACLs.

  227. 227 wee2424 said at 10:17 PM on March 10th, 2015:

Lol, actually considering his experience at GM he could very well be considered an amateur. There is every right to say that. Cool maybe he is an upgrade if he can actually get on the field!!!! Who do you think he is going to throw to Geagle?

  228. 228 Avery Greene said at 10:18 PM on March 10th, 2015:

    We got Cooper!

  229. 229 D3Center said at 10:20 PM on March 10th, 2015:

    Unfortunately its Riley not Amari

  230. 230 wee2424 said at 10:40 PM on March 10th, 2015:

There’s the problem. Your plan has serious issues if you have to keep resorting to plan B or worse. Maclin was obviously plan A. Didn’t happen so who knows if it’s plan B or C now. No Gore? Plan B or worse. Didn’t get your top outside priority FA in McCourty. Plan B. The team suffers when you continually have to do that. At that point it’s hard to call your plan a success.

  231. 231 xeynon said at 10:18 PM on March 10th, 2015:

I don’t like Bradford’s injuries. I don’t like his 79.3 career passer rating or career 6.3 YPA figure. I don’t like the fact that he’s 18-30 as a starter. I don’t like his $12 million salary. I don’t like the fact that we gave up picks AND a guy who to this point has been a better NFL quarterback for him.

In short, I don’t like anything about this trade. At all.

  232. 232 Avery Greene said at 10:19 PM on March 10th, 2015:

    Welcome to the club.

  233. 233 wee2424 said at 11:04 PM on March 10th, 2015:

Confidence is good. However Kelly’s confidence in his scheme is going to kill this franchise. Other FA have noticed it. A level headed Gore for this reason stayed away. Rams FO and fans probably are cracking up laughing and thinking they got the steal of a lifetime. This is almost pathetic. The worst part is that not only does this hurt the franchise this year. These moves have the ability to cripple this franchise for years. There are some people that think Bradford is better then Foles. Unfortunately the results say otherwise and it’s the results that matter.

  234. 234 Red Neck said at 11:07 PM on March 10th, 2015:

  251. 251 Alistair Middlemiss said at 10:16 PM on March 10th, 2015:

Well while it sucks that we gave up a 2nd in 2016 at least we have not mortgaged the future. If this does not work out well Chip will be gone next offseason, but honestly it will be a very decent situation for someone to come into. Will be a blank slate on offence with a good line and a defence that is young and with only a couple of holes. No character concerns in the dressing room and we wont be in cap hell.

I mean we are 7 players away from having a good roster-

    QB
    RB
    WRx2
    RG
    Safety
    CB

Good draft this year (fill 2-3 of those needs) and we will be in an interesting place in 2016.

  252. 252 GEAGLE said at 10:23 PM on March 10th, 2015:

We just traded for our franchise QBS… Assume Dwayne Bowe will be an eagle tomorrow or the day after, unless the go with Demareous Moore or Cecil short..(Mike Wallace if he gets cut). Hoping Nolan Carroll can be our answer at CB…def still need RG, TE, WR, RB, Safety. Interior pass rusher when we lose curry next year. Next year we also have to replace Celek and Mathis unless we cut them now too.
    ..
So exited knowing no silly trade selling our soul for a running qB, thrilled to have our draft picks to fix most of the holes chip created.

If only we can get some good injury luck with Bradford, I’m happy

Sucks I can’t enjoy this draft process like previous years, but with all the players chip got rid of on iffense, not sure how anyone in their right mind can want to trade our ability to build this roster on a college QB…
.. Hate that we lost Nick, love that we aren’t stuck with running QBS, and I’m thrilled we can actually build a team In this draft.
    #20) best WR available
    2) top Guard available
    3) Safety
    4) CB
    5) RB
    6) TE

the issue is you claim to have sources and promote this information as what the Eagles are really going to do. Youve been wrong on ALL accounts and change your tune after you are proven to be wrong. You were adamant Maclin and Foles would remain Eagles and t after the Eagles parted ways with them, you acted like you saw it coming and everyone else were fools. You’re worse than Shah

  266. 266 MCD said at 12:11 AM on March 11th, 2015:

Shah is simply principled as to what he believes makes for a good QB/team. He actually has some logic behind his contrarian thoughts. This is a 1000x better than anything offered by him. It’s like he doesn’t realize I can just check the previous thread to see him directly contradict himself and insult someone else for suggesting what ultimately becomes the actual outcome.

  270. 270 Corry said at 10:18 PM on March 10th, 2015:

Y’know really we shouldn’t be concerned about Bradford as the starter. He can’t get out of bed without tearing an ACL, so what we should really be talking about is Sanchez and if he can limit his turnovers.

I dunno. I think I totally see what the Eagles are thinking, and think it makes complete sense.

You need a franchise QB to win in the NFL. Shurmur has coached both Bradford and Foles, and Kelly only the latter. They together think that Bradford gives the Eagles the best shot to be their franchise QB.

Obviously, getting Mariota was never going to happen (Schefter himself said it would cost an ungodly amount.) If Bradford doesn’t work out, it’s not a horrible price. If he does, it’s an insignificant cost.

    What am I missing here?

  284. 284 Steve Smegal said at 10:21 PM on March 10th, 2015:

But hey, don’t take my word for it, look at his track record.

  295. 295 Greg Richards said at 10:21 PM on March 10th, 2015:

  296. 296 xeynon said at 10:29 PM on March 10th, 2015:

  313. 313 Avery Greene said at 10:34 PM on March 10th, 2015:

Well guys here’s the best I can look at it.

If CK thinks this is his guy, then go for it. CK doesn’t do things conventionally and really, I’d prefer him to make moves that he thinks will work.

Will they? I don’t know. Do I like Bradford? No. But I’m willing to see how this plays out.

  314. 314 xeynon said at 12:22 AM on March 11th, 2015:

I’m willing to see too. I’m not calling for CK to be fired, at least not yet (if the team’s as bad this season as I think it will be it’ll be a different story).

But as Jarock said, even if Kelly likes Bradford, and even if Bradford pans out here, we still got hosed in this deal. Chip apparently has no ability how to properly value NFL talent and that is a disastrous quality for a personnel guy to have.

  315. 315 Christopher Miller said at 10:34 PM on March 10th, 2015:

I feel like this move meant he could not get a workable deal for MM. He was not enamored with Foles. He surveyed the options in FA where Sanchez was widely regarded as the best available option (yuck) and what was reasonably available to us in the draft. He felt like this was the best upside, but brought back Sanchez to protect against another injury situation. We in essence gave up a Foles, a 3 this year (2 next year) and moved back from 4th to 5th (maybe equiv of a 6th this year). I agree that the compensation seems tilted in St Louis’ favor, but I am glad we hung onto a 2nd this year with some good options in that 2nd round where we may need someone like Fisher or the best available WR or RB. He got a little added protection in the form of a 3/4 next year if he gets hurt again. I don’t like this trade at all but I don’t think this one move is some kind of scorched earth vendetta carried out by the cunning ex mrs lurie or anything. In my opinion, we misplayed our hand and people saw Chip going to extraordinary lengths to get his man, and the price went skyrocketing. This feels more like plan B and time will tell if Chip is a genius or a lunatic with a gambling problem.

With that said, let’s stop messing around and snag a safety. I will throw up in my mouth a little if we somehow manage to downgrade from Nate Allen.

  316. 316 Cafone said at 10:42 PM on March 10th, 2015:

Of course he couldn’t get a workable deal for Mariota. He’s a first time GM with no experience.

You know who could have gotten a deal for Mariota? Howie Roseman.

  317. 317 bluto said at 10:44 PM on March 10th, 2015:

    BZZZ

    False.

The cost for Mariota was a non-starter. According to Schefter, who knows more than you or I or anyone else, it was:
    Two 1st rounders
    Two 2nd rounders
    Two 3rd rounders
    PLUS
    Foles

  318. 318 Christopher Miller said at 10:51 PM on March 10th, 2015:

I do kinda feel like Howie got unfairly screwed over this year. We will live or die by Chip and that was probably the way it had to be for someone like him. I have a bad feeling we will reach for Fisher in the first now that it looks like we will still have it and then watch Strong become the next Larry Fitz or something.

  319. 319 Greg Richards said at 10:38 PM on March 10th, 2015:

Why the hell does our local media never report anything? You have other local guys breaking news of team interest/visits and very little from the Philly media. These local outlets need to get rid of all the ugly men and hire some tight piece that all the players and team execs want to talk to.

  320. 320 Cafone said at 10:41 PM on March 10th, 2015:

Jeffrey Lurie needs to step in and straighten this shit out. He should demote Kelly immediately and reappoint Howie Roseman before Kelly does any more damage in free agency and blows an entire draft. If Kelly threatens to quit again… seeya later.

I like him as a coach, but he’s a clown as a GM.

  321. 321 Mr. Magee said at 10:49 PM on March 10th, 2015:

  322. 322 Andy Six Score and Four said at 11:10 PM on March 10th, 2015:

  323. 323 Dubs said at 10:41 PM on March 10th, 2015:

We signed Kelly as our head coach for this kind of approach. At least we can say Lurie is letting Chip be Chip. 324. 324 Mr. Magee said at 10:48 PM on March 10th, 2015:

  325. 325 Cafone said at 10:58 PM on March 10th, 2015:

No we didn’t. We signed him to coach the team that Howie Roseman was going to build.

But Chip didn’t like Howie hanging around with all his numbers and research and inside information. He didn’t like Howie always telling him why the moves he was about to make were horrible. Howie made him feel stupid.

See, Chip likes to go with his gut. All that moneyball crap is for nerds. Chip is a football guy.

In one press conference, Chip can go from GM heal to GM Godfather (and we have a role to play). He announces a big press conference. ESPN airs it, hoping it is big drama, maybe Cooper will be there. Chip comes out with Bradford and then spends an hour praising Bradford like no other. He subtly compares Bradford to Mariotta by saying he never had a QB with the accuracy of Bradford, or the footwork, pocket presence, or IQ, or strong arm.. He even pulls out the All-22 of Bradford, talking fast, showing his football acumen, and dazzles onlookers with football vocab.

The key is throughout the press conference, Chip states over a dozen times, that Bradford is way more than a system QB.

Bradford then gets the cheesesteak treatment, meets the fans, goes to a sixers game, and fans pretend to love him. We are so over Mariotta is the impression the city gives.

He not only convinces everyone that he loves Bradford now, but leaves a bit of doubt for Tamba Bay and Titans that maybe they should have coveted Bradford more all along. Then Chip waits in his office until draft calmly waiting for the Bucs and Titans to unravel from the pressure of not screwing up a top 2 pick, until they on draft day are fighting each other trying to trade their pick for a comfortable Bradford and a few more picks.

There is no evidence – literally, none – that he is a better NFL quarterback than Nick Foles. All the evidence suggests the opposite, in fact. And he’s older and more expensive than Foles, and we gave up good draft picks in addition to Foles to get him.

The idea of bringing a brand new QB in at this point would make more sense if we were in a clear rebuilding mode. Kelly’s coaching got back to back ten win seasons out of a team that had serious problems on defense and a real lack of consistent QB play whether do to incompetence at the position or injury. If he’d have blown the team up day one, I would have been disappointed, but not upset. I can still defend every move he’s made except this last one. Just really, really upset with Kelly the gm at this point.

If the Redskins or old Raiders were making these kinds of moves, I’d laugh and think Al Davis and Dan Snyder were acting like fools, as usual. Doesn’t seem so funny when it’s our guy.
On the other hand… Imagine if Chip sees something in Bradford that helps him fulfill that ROY potential, and Maxwell and Kiko help build a powerhouse D. Then some holes are filled by the draft and, oh yea, we land Murray. Hey, a boy can dream.

  402. 402 JohnDoe610 said at 11:28 PM on March 10th, 2015:

  406. 406 Jarock said at 11:36 PM on March 10th, 2015:

I’ll just reiterate what I said earlier. Bradford could end up being the messiah and that wouldn’t make this a good trade. Based on current values of both players and what both guys are being paid, there is no way we should have been shipping picks to St. Louis in this trade. Best case scenario that I can imagine was it was a straight up 1 for 1 swap. Then you could just compare results and say ‘ok’. As it is, we lost picks, lost salary cap flexibility and gained a player who has not been all that successful in the NFL and hasn’t shown any ability to stay healthy. I can’t spin that into a positive and I tend to respond positively to every Eagles move.

Chip trades Lesean for Kiko. Positives – we gained salary cap flexibility and while Alonso is coming off an injury, he hasn’t been around long enough to be considered fragile. He also played at a pro-bowl level and Lesean is coming off a down year.

Maclin – Honest attempt appeared to be made to keep him. Salary demands weren’t outrageous but were more than we felt was acceptable. Tough loss, but not a crippling one.

Desean – Me first player who never was going to fit into Kelly’s ideal locker room. Also just came off getting owned by a young above average corner in a playoff game (not an elite corner mind you) and was being paid as an elite player. Not a popular move but one I can understand.

This one is baffling, illogical, and frankly a perfect example of why coaches should not be gms as well.

I’m trying not to be a Debbie Downer. I don’t think Foles was the long term answer but that trade made no sense. And health is an issue here. Would I prefer Bradford over Sanchez as a backup for Mariota or Hundley? Yes. But no more than that.

  430. 430 GEAGLE said at 11:35 PM on March 10th, 2015:

not sure how to interpret this… The If Indeed this is the QB the Eagles want, why did they try to sign Maclin, Maxwell, Gore, Franklin, McCourty and BG(or Worlids). They were Agessive trying to sign all those expensive players, what would have actually happened if we were able to sign all of them? Bradfords cintract probably wouldn’t have fit under our cap..this trade was dead twice since the combine, so obviously Bradford has been in our head for sometime, yet we were trying to buy so many free agents that we wouldn’t be able to fit Sam under our contract…

I guess we would have made more cuts, freeing up more money if we needed it to fit bradfordss salary under our cap. Could have cut Meco and celek(don’t know his contact status) if we needed money
    ..
I had heard rumors that of we would have cut Meco to free up money if we needed it to pay for a player, I’m sure Celek would also be in play..
    ..
But if we liked Bradford so much, why risk us signing so many free agents that it would make our ability to fit him under the cap very difficult

I actually feel a lot better about this trade now that I have taken the time to actually watch Sam Bradford play and did some research on his injury history. I am still not happy we gave up a second round pick but I really think Sammy B-Rad has the potential to put up good numbers in our offense. Yes Bradford has a well documented injury history but so does Foles. Bradford tore his ACL twice in less than one year and that may have been the result of rushing him back too early. Other than that he had a shoulder injury one year in college but guess what Foles broke his shoulder last year too. Foles has had at least two concussions as well as a broken hand and hasn’t played a full season for us since he was drafted. I loved Foles’ upside but Bradford’s may be higher. He is more functionally mobile and has better pocket presence. Check out some of the throws he makes in the video I posted earlier in this thread, the guy has serious arm talent and definitely has a stronger arm than Foles. B-Rad is still young and has the arm to be a successful QB especially in this system. Plus I have no doubt that we will be able to sign him to a much more team friendly deal that will lower his cap hit this year. It may not be the ideal situation but I no longer feel like the Eagles sky is falling down all around me.

That’s more than a good arm so on its own it’s hard to like regardless. DM is 27 but runs hard, seems everyone’s so caught up in carries stats, he could have some years left.

there is a way this trade makes sense: you want Bradford to be Mariota or Hundley’s Doug Pedersen instead of Sanchez but don’t trust Sam Bradford’s injury history.

Also, I feel as bad for Sam Bradford as you can feel for a guy making 12 million next year. He’s just getting SAVAGED.

  445. 445 SteveH said at 11:55 PM on March 10th, 2015:

Lost in all the hubbub is we have yet to figure out a 2nd corner, a safety upgrade, Grizzle is a lateral move at OLB, and we are significantly worse at both WR1 and RB unless we make some moves, plus we are likely going to be the same or worse at RG.

Unless of course some rooks come in and light it up, but I think the idea with FA is to always go out better than you came in.

Is Bradford a 2nd rounders worth better than Foles at QB? I think he’s probably about equal when healthy, but that’s only projecting into the Chip Kelly system QB bump.

All that aside, what makes no sense to me, is that Chip has basically just gone all in and said “Sam Bradford is the guy who is going to take this team to the promised land”.

I think we all hoped at least a promising rookie would be brought in to challenge or push Foles because we still don’t know if the real Foles was closer to 2013 or closer to 2014, but we went from Foles/rookie competing to be the guy of the future to all in on Bradford with Mark Sanchez backing him up (and staring down the barrel of significant playing time if Bradford can’t stay healthy).

    Think about that.

  455. 455 mksp said at 12:02 AM on March 11th, 2015:

WTF did you guys think Nick Foles was worth?

There was clearly a market for Sam Bradford. The guy is still, and will always be, more talented than Nick. Chip paid up to get his guy. Whether to be QB or as part of a trade.

Either way, not a single person commenting on this board can say he got good or bad value, because we don’t know what other teams were offering for Nick (yet).

I understand not being 100% on board with this trade, but as far as I’m concerned the only asset we really lost was a 2016 2nd. Nick for Sam is more or less a wash, with Sam Bradford having way more upside, making the risk worth taking.

If Nick sucks in 2015, as I expect him to, than you lose him for nothing next summer when he goes to take a backup job somewhere.

  461. 461 Mitchell said at 12:06 AM on March 11th, 2015:

The only thing that really irks me is that second rounder. All things considered I would have like a Foles-Bradford straight up trade. Even giving up a conditional 2nd/3rd would have been better.

  470. 470 xeynon said at 12:43 AM on March 11th, 2015:

Why do you think Bradford has more upside? For the vast majority of his career, he has either been hurt, or ineffective, or both. He turns 28 this year. I think if he were going to emerge as a good NFL quarterback he would’ve done so already.

  471. 471 Mitchell said at 12:14 AM on March 11th, 2015:

That’s fine, purely selfish reasons didn’t want to lose that second.

  472. 472 Jarock said at 12:09 AM on March 11th, 2015:

Ok, let’s examine that. Talent wise, Sam’s arm is in the same category as Nick’s good but not great. Sam’s a better athlete. Nick’s been more accurate in the pros. Both guys historically are pretty good at avoiding turnovers. Nick’s YPA is much better oh and Nick’s showed in 2013 that he can put up monster numbers in this offense. Both guys are injury prone. Both guys are only signed for one more season. Sam makes 13 million and Nick makes about a million. Based on that who should be worth more??

Let’s further put this in perspective. Most of us who liked the Shady trade pointed out that we got a pro-bowl LB who was making much less money for a pro-bowl RB who may be in decline. Money was a huge factor in that trade. Are we supposed to ignore it in the Foles/Bradford trade??

Side with them. Support them all you want. Please don’t try to make this out that it was a ‘good’ trade. You probably still think we should have gotten picks for Desean. We couldn’t get jack for Desean because of how expensive he was and he was a productive player with no injury history. The Rams fleeced the Eagles and there’s no getting around it.

  473. 473 mksp said at 12:11 AM on March 11th, 2015:

Nick got to play QB in an offense that made Mark Sanchez look competent. He got to throw to wide open receivers all across the field, assuming he saw them (which he often didn’t). Nick played in what is widely considered the most QB-friendly offense in the league.

Sam Bradford played under Jeff Fischer and Brian Schottenheimer.

  474. 474 Mitchell said at 12:15 AM on March 11th, 2015:

To add to that, I think Bradford’s receivers were top 5 in dropped balls.

  475. 475 Jarock said at 12:15 AM on March 11th, 2015:

You’re still assuming Bradford’s competence without actual evidence. It doesn’t match and salary does play into it. The Rams wanted to be rid of Bradford. That shows a lot as well.

  476. 476 mksp said at 12:17 AM on March 11th, 2015:

It’s one year of salary at a position teams typically allocate a big number. I think its a minor consideration.

  477. 477 Jarock said at 12:19 AM on March 11th, 2015:

Which we are paying in picks for? They should be paying us for the salary dump if nothing else. While it wouldn’t have been certain, there’s a good chance we could have picked up Bradford for less salary and no picks if we’d have just waited. Whether you think Nick was a good QB or not, he produced results in our offense and was making virtually nothing. There was no driving impetus to make this move.

  478. 478 mksp said at 12:21 AM on March 11th, 2015:

The driving impetus to make this move was identifying an actual franchise Quarterback.

It wasn’t going to be Nick Foles. We pay the equivalent of a 2015 3rd to see if Sam Bradford is. I’m okay with that.

Or he’s a trade chip. Either way works for me.

  479. 479 Jarock said at 12:25 AM on March 11th, 2015:

So your argument is essentially “It wasn’t going to be Foles?” Your bias is showing. We gave up a fourth for a fifth this year and a 2ND ROUNDER next season for a QB who will cost us 13ish million and is every bit as unproven.

  480. 480 mksp said at 12:38 AM on March 11th, 2015:

The difference is that one of those guys was given every opportunity to prove he could succeed in this system, and couldn’t.

If Nick performed well in 2014, do you think we’d be having this conversation?

Fact is that Nick was garbage all year. Despite having Shady and Maclin. Yes he had o-line injuries, but Sam Bradford’s never played behind a decent line in his life and was throwing to….I don’t even know who.

  481. 481 Jarock said at 12:42 AM on March 11th, 2015:

And his results were worse than Nick’s this year. Biggest knock I have on Nick is unquestionably, he hasn’t been able to stay healthy. That’s a big knock but the same applies to Bradford. Fact remains, St. Louis should have been paying us for the salary dump regardless.

  482. 482 Mr. Magee said at 12:35 AM on March 11th, 2015:

He’s not a trade chip! No better than Foles in that respect. And he’s not a franchise QB either, for crying out loud… You make it sound like he’s a clean slate that everyone needs to examine under the light of actual competition.
Is he supposed to come out and show us all how to properly run the read option?

bradford isn’t talented, he’s nowhere close to being a top qb and he has a bad knee and been injured many times.

  484. 484 Mr. Magee said at 12:23 AM on March 11th, 2015:

Ok, well good luck with that. Jeff Lurie hopes you buy LOTS of season tix, and some Sam Bradford jerseys, too. And don’t forget your travel plans to the super bowl… I’m thinking Feb 2017.

  485. 485 xeynon said at 12:40 AM on March 11th, 2015:

It would be nice if there was any evidence in their historical performances to support your contention that Sam Bradford is better than Nick Foles. Unfortunately, there isn’t. The evidence suggests precisely the opposite, actually.

  486. 486 mksp said at 12:40 AM on March 11th, 2015:

Sure, if you disregard context and evaluate entirely based on statistics.

  488. 488 Iskar36 said at 12:05 AM on March 11th, 2015:

Instead of looking at this trade in a vacuum, can anyone rationalize this trade in the context of the offseason plan? Let’s assume Chip does in fact believe in Sam Bradford. Let’s assume CK thinks Bradford should be fully healthy and can be a franchise QB. Surely, CK is (hopefully) smart enough to know a move like this, taking on such a high risk move, absolutely destroys any leash he might have, and that if the team struggles, Chips job will be on the line. With that in mind, how do you justify this trade AFTER you know that Maclin has walked, you traded away your starting RB and your first choice of replacement said “no thanks, and you released your starting RG (who in addition to starting, played an enormous role in being versatile, allowing us to fit in backup linemen at positions they were most comfortable with). Basically we make a high risk move but don’t bother bringing in/keeping the added support needed to help this move to be successful. I just don’t see how this fits a logical plan for the offseason.

  489. 489 ICDogg said at 12:07 AM on March 11th, 2015:

Yes, and the move eats up a lot of cap space that could help make some of these moves possible.

  490. 490 Greg Richards said at 12:08 AM on March 11th, 2015:

I think Chip thinks he can sign another WR and RB and his offense will hum right along. Guy has an ego. Doesn’t mean he’s wrong.

  491. 491 RC5000 said at 12:13 AM on March 11th, 2015:

it’s a high risk move and the ceiling’s pretty low.

  492. 492 Mr. Magee said at 12:25 AM on March 11th, 2015:

Yup. Apparently there was no plan. The Rams fleeced the Eagles, and Chip Kelky fleeced Jeff Lurie.

  495. 495 HawaiianEagle said at 12:09 AM on March 11th, 2015:

There MUST be a reason or 2 he was nr 1 pick in 2010. Chip should get his best.

  496. 496 P_P_K said at 12:12 AM on March 11th, 2015:

There was a reason. Questions now are: Can his knees handle playing football? Has he developed as a young qb enough to lead a team into contention?

  497. 497 Mitchell said at 12:17 AM on March 11th, 2015:

Does he have too? All he has to do is learn the system and Chip’s offense will do it for him. I think it’s understood that it’s not hard to play qb for the Eagles, all you have to do is hit open recievers and not turn the ball over!

  498. 498 Mitchell said at 12:09 AM on March 11th, 2015:

I watched your video below and came away with some conclusions. 1Bradford faced A TON of pressure and was on the ground very often. 2 His receivers had an epidemic of the droppsies. 3 Bradford could put some mustard on the ball and can make all the throws, which is probably why he was the 1st selection.

  499. 499 Stanimal said at 12:11 AM on March 11th, 2015:

Exactly my point he may not actually be a bad QB but just played for a bad team that gave him no help.

    1-year rental.

  528. 528 EagleNebula said at 12:24 AM on March 11th, 2015:

That is part of the proof the conspiracy theorists are using to prove he is about to be traded to move up in the draft.

Edit: I should disclose that I want to believe…

  529. 529 Sean Stott said at 12:26 AM on March 11th, 2015:

Honestly at this point I’ve read the Spadaro post, and it seems as though they really do want him. Maybe they simply wait and see if Mariota slides, and have deals in place, with the knowledge that you already have a QB in place who could run your offense.

  530. 530 EagleNebula said at 12:31 AM on March 11th, 2015:

I have given up speculating. Case in point: spuds has to defend the move, he has to project the teams talking points. To do otherwise not only hurts the team from a PR standpoint, but from a negotiating standpoint as well. So, quite frankly, I would expect the same article regardless of long term plans.

  531. 531 Sean Stott said at 12:31 AM on March 11th, 2015:

Either way, we’ll definitely find out on draft day.

  534. 534 Greg Richards said at 12:26 AM on March 11th, 2015:

If you think a player can be a franchise QB, then salary, needs at other positions all take a backseat.

  535. 535 Jarock said at 12:28 AM on March 11th, 2015:

So, evidence means nothing? We have posters who believe Brandon Bridge and Joe Webb are franchise QBs. A few even argue GJ Kinne. Would you support them?

  536. 536 Mitchell said at 12:29 AM on March 11th, 2015:

    Have you watched Bradford play?

  537. 537 Sean Stott said at 12:30 AM on March 11th, 2015:

He plays very similar to Sanchez.

We don’t need 2 of them.

  538. 538 Mitchell said at 12:30 AM on March 11th, 2015:

If you say that, then you obviously haven’t seen him play.

  539. 539 Jarock said at 12:30 AM on March 11th, 2015:

Yes. Doesn’t outweigh his statistics, injury history, or salary. Ask the Rams.

  540. 540 Mitchell said at 12:32 AM on March 11th, 2015:

Meh, I guess it depends on who you ask, apparently Kelley thinks so but I can see your argument. I agree with the injuries but some of his statistics have to do with where he was and who he had around him, similar to Nick in 2013. I’m not taking anything away from Nick but I think it is a bit ignorant to place all of his success on him alone.

  541. 541 Jarock said at 12:37 AM on March 11th, 2015:

Undeniably true. I’m not trying to say that Nick is demonstrably better than Bradford. I’m merely pointing out that there is no evidence indicating he is worse and plenty indicating he is better. Environment may be the biggest factor there and honestly I think they are relatively comparable talents. Even if you believe Nick is less talented salary comes into it and weighs heavily in Nick’s favor. I would have cheered if the Rams were sending us picks. I’d be miffed if it was one for one, but not too upset. Us giving away assets in addition is ridiculous. There’s been rampant speculation that Bradford was on his way out the door with St. Louis regardless. Wait and pick him up on the cheap. Relying on someone with this bad an injury history is foolish.

  542. 542 Mitchell said at 12:41 AM on March 11th, 2015:

I totally agree with the picks and that is my biggest gripe. I will say there is a reasons Bradford was #1 and Foles was taken in the 3rd. As far as cap goes: It’s probably worth the risk and they both only have 1 year left on contracts and we have plenty of space. I think if we didn’t trade for Bradford, another team would, at least that is what was being tweeted. So I don’t think Bradford would have made it to being cut. In summation, I don’t condone of condemn this trade. I am disappointed in the 2nd we gave up but we can get a pick back correct? I personally think Bradford has a higher ceiling than Foles but, hey we’ll see!

  543. 543 peteike said at 1:19 AM on March 11th, 2015:

Great rational talk here, my thinking also. Hate the trade but don’t see much difference in Foles starting with a rookie learning vs Bradford. I don’t care at all about the money except being cheap losing guys and dismissing talent. Maclin was not on Eagles, or was it for not overpaying a bit? Seems like they tried, same with mccourty. I get shady trade. Still many decisions like gore I hate, but this deal on its own I’m trying really hard to be okay with. I think worst part is ck willing to gamble on him, hope he still spreads out odds and drafts a qb. Didn’t ever think mm was possible, still don’t

  544. 544 Mitchell said at 1:45 AM on March 11th, 2015:

I’m personally interested in Garrett Grayson.

  545. 545 EagleNebula said at 12:40 AM on March 11th, 2015:

Considering each play in football are dependent on the group and not the individual, I always wonder how accurately the individual statistics really capture the quality of a player. For instance- yards per attempt is heavily effected by completion percentage (each incompletion is 0 yard attempt), and drops/throw aways severely Impact completion percentage. That means if a receiver drops a pass or a QB throws a pass away when under pressure and no receivers are open, the QB rating, completion percentage and ypa all go down even though the QB may not be at fault…

  546. 546 Jarock said at 12:47 AM on March 11th, 2015:

This is kind of the Archie Manning argument. Would you rather have had Archie or Peyton? Talent wise, there’s probably not a ton separating the two but the results have been drastically different. Talent wise, Bradford’s probably more talented, but it’s not a huge gap. Both have injury histories. My irritation comes down to salary. It’s extremely poor business practice to pay more money for someone who hasn’t proven they can produce more. There’s a reason the Ram’s were willing to trade him to begin with and it’s not only the injuries. If they believed he was Peyton Manning but couldn’t stay healthy, they’d have kept him and prayed he actually stayed healthy. The Eagles overpaid.

  547. 547 EagleNebula said at 12:54 AM on March 11th, 2015:

I am not justifying the trade. I am just questioning the poor use of statistics in football in general. I am undecided on the trade because I don’t trust Foles but I am doubtful of Bradford. I have to see Bradford in this offense before I claim to have any idea how he will do.

  548. 548 Greg Richards said at 12:30 AM on March 11th, 2015:

Bridge and Webb, no. How can you doubt Kinne? As far as “evidence” goes statistical results don’t always tell the full story. Unless you are breaking down all his film like I’m sure the Eagles do and know how he fits into your system, you’re not in a position to judge.

  549. 549 Sean Stott said at 12:28 AM on March 11th, 2015:

Locking up a long term deal with Sam-2-ACL-tears-2-shoulder-surgeries-Bradford sounds like a great plan.

  550. 550 Nick C said at 12:36 AM on March 11th, 2015:

I’m sorry I know the shock is over for some of us, but I still can’t defend this trade. We traded an accomplished, but also prone QB, for someone with less of a pedigree in twice the time. Also he is paid 12x as much. In a salary cap league, where you can’t even get anything for desean Jackson or receive an ILB In return for a 26 year old all pro RB, clearly trades are about value according to salary. And they should have been paying us to bail them out of his contract. Instead we paid them. Horrible move whichever way you look at it.

  551. 551 mksp said at 12:40 AM on March 11th, 2015:

Sam Bradford has 10x the “pedigree” of Nick. Not saying it means anything.

Also want to dispute the fact that Nick is “accomplished.” He had one good, very lucky, year when Chip’s offense surprised the entire league.

  552. 552 Nick C said at 12:44 AM on March 11th, 2015:

What pedigree in the NFL are you talking about…??? And injury pedigree doesn’t count

  553. 553 Mr. Magee said at 12:47 AM on March 11th, 2015:

Then why say it? Who cares about pedigree.

This whole discussion about Foles vs Bradford is a complete waste of time… They are more similar than dissimilar. Bottom line is that neither is going to take you to the super bowl. And if anything, this offseason has taken us further from that target.

  554. 554 Nick C said at 12:41 AM on March 11th, 2015:

What is even more laughable Is that kelly has the nerve to scoff at other talent evaluators. I was on the kelly train, and still think he is a decent coach; however his arrogance to need control when he is such a poor talent evaluator is detrimental to our team.

  555. 555 mksp said at 12:34 AM on March 11th, 2015:

    That would be rough, haha.

  559. 559 Alistair Middlemiss said at 12:35 AM on March 11th, 2015:

I tried to go to sleep but could not. So I decided to try and persuade myself that Bradford was a decent pick up. So first stop was to watch a Rams game, because they were so irrelevant and poor to watch I have largely ignored them for the last 5 years.

So picked the best game I could find in his 2013 season..

    ARI 09/08/2013 27/38 passing (71%) 299 yard 2 TDs 1Int.

Now this shows a problem that is one of his ‘best’ games, but w/e lets roll.

    Pros from the game:
Throws a pretty ball, tight spiral, quick release with decent zip. Can throw back shoulder pass’s. Better mobility than I expected. Ran play action passes well and was effective. Got the ball out quickly. Threw the deep ball well.

    Con’s from the game:
Consistently checked down on 3rd down, the rams going 4-11 for 3rd down was mainly due to this. Struggled to see when receivers would come open. Offence seemed designed to get 1 player open on each play – did not seem to go through progression well. On occasion would throw into triple coverage, had a couple of very pickible passes as well as his INT.

    Conclusions:
So what were my takeaway’s from the game? Meh, the offence was pretty dull, and they moved the ball well on 1st and 2nd down but really struggled to sustain drives. I felt he played with training wheels on, playing safety first. Did not seem to read the game very well and decision making was average. Yes the Rams offence is limited, players and coach’s came into it, but Sam was not special at all, never felt he was taking over the game and he cost the team with his conservatism.
