Rumor of the Day – Updated

Things are never boring when it comes to the Eagles.

Trade talk is picking up. Keep an eye on guys like Kenny Stills and Alshon Jeffery. We also know about Jadeveon Clowney and Trent Williams.

Say what?

The Eagles are a Super Bowl contender. Carson Wentz is healthy. He’s got good protection and lots of weapons. Why would you trade a starting receiver? On the surface, this doesn’t make a lot of sense to me. Before we get too excited, we don’t know if this is speculation or something genuinely being talked about by NFL front offices. But this is a credible source and apparently NFL Live on ESPN mentioned it the other day.

So if this is legit, what are the Eagles thinking?

Some people see this as an overreaction to JJ Arcega-Whiteside’s play against the Ravens. He had a terrific game and now the Eagles are running off their star receiver. Dumb, dumb and dumb. I don’t think the Eagles would do something that simple.

The Eagles would be willing to deal Jeffery for two reasons. First, they would get something good in return. Second, cap reasons. Jeffery has high cap figures each of the next three years. The Eagles do a great job of managing the salary cap and sometimes that means making tough decisions.

Would the Eagles be interested in a Jeffery for Jadeveon Clowney deal? That would really make the Eagles loaded up front. Daeshon Hall has had an impressive summer, but Clowney is a special talent. He was dominant last year when the Texans played the Eagles. Adding him would be tempting.

The Eagles would then have to find a WR to add.

I mention Stills, but there could be other veterans the Eagles might target. There are always veterans who get cut in September.

The Eagles could deal Jeffery for some other player. They could deal him for a draft pick. Seattle has a good team, but they are hurting at WR. They could decide that adding a key target for Russell Wilson is important enough to give up a solid pick.

For now, this is all speculation, which is both fun and frustrating. I think most of us enjoy trying to guess what trade might happen and how that would changes things. This is frustrating because it feels like the Eagles are in a good place. Why mess with it?

The team is excited about JJAW. They obviously feel like he can contribute this year. He’s shown the ability to play in the slot or outside. He’s running good routes. He knows how to get open. JJAW has good hands and has made some tough grabs. He doesn’t look like your typical rookie receiver.

The Eagles also have the best 1-2 TE tandem in the league. They want Zach Ertz and Dallas Goedert on the field at the same time. That means pulling off a WR.

Don’t get too excited or too upset. We’re all just speculatin’ about a hypothesis at this point. Besides, if the Eagles do deal AJ, they could always go sign Dorial Green-Beckham to take his place. I’m pretty sure he’s unsigned.

2016 really was a weird year.

Think how far the Eagles have come. The fact we can even entertain the notion of trading Jeffery tells you just how different this roster is.
