Back To Work

I am home.  Sorry for the bizarro week.  I go on vacation to California every year.  I normally carve out time every day to do some writing to keep fresh material on the site.  This year didn’t go as planned (for good and bad reasons) so I ended up drinking pints with fake Luke Wilson and real Luke Wilson instead of writing.  My apologies for the craziness, but it was good to unwind for a few days.

So what did I miss?

The Luries are getting a divorce.  I am completely out of the loop on this and have no idea if it will mean a darn thing to the Eagles and how things are done.  Les Bowen wrote a good article on the subject.  He thinks changes will happen, but I don’t know if they are the types of changes that will affect us fans.  Christina was involved in some business stuff and some projects, but had nothing to do with football.  Frankly, changes on the business side of things are just not a big deal to me.

Could this cause the team to be sold?  That is possible, but I think doubtful.  To me, that would be the main fear.  Hopefully the split is amicable and the team will be affected in a very minimal way.

The Eagles have invited WR Tiger Jones to Training Camp.  Jones plays for the Philadelphia Soul and currently leads the AFL in receiving yards (2010).  He lists at 5-11, 195.  He’s also 30 years old.  Clearly this isn’t a big deal, but it is interesting that the Eagles would look at a receiver with his age and background.  The Eagles generally want young projects, so that players have time to develop.  With Jones, the Eagles are either doing someone a favor and giving him a look or they are hoping that his maturity will help him to be at his best in Lehigh and to push those around him.  At age 30, he’s not practice squad material.

I have no problem with the Eagles taking a look at Jones.  Can’t hurt.  He’s a longshot to challenge for a roster spot, but all a fringe player like Jones can ask for is a shot to show what he can do against the big boys.  Then he’ll know at the end of the day that he was/wasn’t NFL material.  I think not knowing would be worse than not making it when you did get a chance.

I’m late in getting the new MAQB column posted.  Sorry for that.  Gimpy is starting to have an open mind on Bountygate and the fact the NFL case might have some serious holes in it.  I remain confused.  I find it hard to believe the NFL could get something like this so wrong, but they have done a lousy job with it based on some recent events.  It will be interesting to see how all of this plays out.

Back to Luke Wilson.  So me and some buddies are at a bar in LA.  Don’t ask me the name.  There was a hot bartender (Lila maybe?) and cold beer.  Me and my buddies are goofing off and telling some funny stories when a couple of other guys at the bar start commenting and join in the fun.  We talk for a few minutes when I make the comment that the one guy looks just like a young Luke Wilson.  Several people at the bar (this had become a public discussion by then) agree.  The guy’s named turned out to be Matt and we called him Luke for a couple of hours, but he never got bothered.  Good guy.

On Thursday my buddies and I ventured down to Santa Monica to go to Big Dean’s, a legendary beach bar.  We’re sitting there drinking beers and telling stories when in walks…the real Luke Wilson.  He plops down at the bar and drinks for about an hour with some buddies.

The fake Luke was on the east side, sans beard.  The real Luke was on the west side, with a thick beard.  Didn’t talk to real Luke.  No one was paying him any attention and I think he liked it that way.  Figured I’d leave the man alone.

Oh, and I shared a movie theater with Jeff Van Gundy.  He’s so much sexier in real life.  Goes from .001 to .0015 on the hot-meter.

I am pure Hollywood now folks.

So, just to be clear, you never saw Fake Luke Wilson and Real Luke Wilson at the same time, right? Sort of like Superman and Clark Kent. Or Peter Parker and Spiderman. Or He-Man and Prince Adam. Just saying…

Why can’t I think who Luke Wilson is?? Sounds so familiar. Being serious, is he the actor with that big bent nose?

No, that’s his brother Owen Wilson.

If you had told me you were going to meet Luke Wilson for drinks you could have slipped him my script “First Day Starter – The Jason Kelce Story” especially while he’s liking the beard.

2 to 5 odds: Christina was caught with Derek Landri
1 to 3 odds: Jeffrey was caught with Derek Landri

You were on the right track. First, Joe Banner is allowed “to pursue other interests” and is trembling at his dismissal and now the other shoe has dropped, or should I say 4 shoes, a belt, a bra,…well, you get the picture. Now we hear Christina is being eased out. Hmmm, schtupping much? (I know: that’s a horrible image but I just couldn’t help myself)

Better than my drag-racing Samuel L Jackson out of a stop light. I won (but he didn’t know we were racing).

Glad your back, Tommy. Any word on making it to camp? I’ll pitch in for some of the local micro-brews if you make it the 28th.

Have you ever considered getting a guest blogger for a week when you go on vacation?

I can take a stab at it. I already have a story lined up about the time I ran out of chips and had to watch the game, completely sober, on a 32″ TV. And it wasn’t even HD.

I should say, I’m not looking for sympathy. I’m a survivor.

I’ve gone on vacation to LA every year since 2000. Normally my posting stays regular. The difference this time is that my buddy Josh took the week off work. Normally he stays at work and I take time each day to write, then go chug beer. Next year I’ll find out if he’s going to work or not and plan accordingly.

Old school, what a great gut buster! Better than the Hangover. I love the scene with the black van playing Metalica’s “Master of Puppets” and kidnapping the old bum at the bus stop.

Glad you had a good time in LA. A great place for single guys to hang. I visited Penn, Nj, Ny, and DC a couple weeks ago when the weather was fantastic. Food was excellent, bread incredible, and green grass and trees everywhere. Almost wanted to move back….. But everyplace has its ups and downs.

Welcome to LA, from another LA eagles fan. You should have tried Dinah’s fried chicken in Los Feliz area of Glendale, where Andy Reid grew up. I swear that’s where Big Red got his sexy from.
