NFL Draft – 3rd Round

Posted: April 27th, 2012 | Author: | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 124 Comments »

Eagles picks so far:

1 – DT Fletcher Cox – 6-4, 298 – Mississippi State

2 – LB Mychal Kendricks – 5-11, 240 – Cal

2 – DE Vinny Curry – 6-3, 266 – Marshall

That is one hell of a start to the 2012 Draft.  I coveted Cox and Curry.  On my Draft Preview list of players I wanted…

DT Fletcher Cox – Miss State … Great pass rusher.
DE Vinny Curry – Marshall … Gifted pass rusher.  Can play on the inside if needed.

I did not list Mychal Kendricks.  I do like Kendricks a lot.  He was a very fun player to study.  The problem is that he’s only 5-11 and I projected him as an ILB.  Andy Reid says he will compete at SAM.  I will write up a lengthy review and get into the subject.  The key for now is to know that he is a very good player and very good athlete.

5-11, 240
40 – 4.47
VJ – 39.5
BJ – 10’7″
3C – n/a
SS – 4.19
BP – 24 reps
Career numbers: 260 tackles (155 solo), 36.5 TFLs, 13.5 sacks, 4 INTs, 1 FF, 5 PBUs

* * * * *

So what will the Eagles do in the 3rd round?

I hope they target CB.  Here are some guys of interest:

Brandon Boykin – Georgia
DeQuan Menzie – Alabama
Jamell Fleming – Oklahoma
Jayron Hosley – Va Tech
Dwight Bentley – LA-Lafayette

I have also heard some info that the Eagles might go for a DT. I’m not sure if this is legit or a smokescreen they floated to get teams to trade up in the 2nd round.  I hope it was just a smokescreen, but haven’t been able to confirm that.

If we do go DT, could be

Mike Martin – Michigan
Brandon Thompson – Clemson
Alameda Ta’Amu – Washington

TE, RB, and WR are also possible.  Too many names to throw out there.

Let’s see what happens.

We picked 3 tough hard nosed players who kick butt and take names, that’s what this team needed.

This team needed more toughness, they picked up three tough hard nosed guys who don’t take prisoners. Add that to Ryans and I’m oficially stoked

  8. 8 nicolajNN said at 9:36 PM on April 27th, 2012:

Reid mentioned Kendricks would cover TEs, while he’s athletic enough will the height not limit his ability to do so?

  9. 9 MichaelFloyd84 said at 9:40 PM on April 27th, 2012:

Agreed. Every Time a TE goes out it will basically be like one of us trying to cover Plax. Not a fan at all

  10. 10 nicolajNN said at 9:44 PM on April 27th, 2012:

I’m not down on the pick, but when Tight Ends are 6’5″ it will be a challenge for him

  11. 11 deg0ey said at 9:44 PM on April 27th, 2012:

That was my first thought, but he’s got a beastly vertical leap, so maybe they figure he can jump high enough to make up for the height difference

  12. 12 Nu_B said at 9:46 PM on April 27th, 2012:

39.5″ vertical. 10’7″ in the broad. Those are strong aerial numbers. I’ll take that athletic ability over an inch or two.

  13. 13 ICDogg said at 10:10 PM on April 27th, 2012:

If we want great aerial ability, we could always bring back Marlon Favorite 🙂

    4th (123 overall)

  18. 18 nicolajNN said at 9:38 PM on April 27th, 2012:

    Pick number 123, 4th rounder

  19. 19 deshawnbentley said at 9:43 PM on April 27th, 2012:

How about Bobby Massie? Or Josh Norman?

  20. 20 R G said at 9:46 PM on April 27th, 2012:

Jared Crick? We are starting to draft like the Giants…lots of D-Lineman as I predicted few months back.

Im shocked how Boykin has fallen. Is it the injury?

Any athletic O-lineman that could shock in the 3rd?

  21. 21 ian_no_2 said at 9:47 PM on April 27th, 2012:

I like TY Hilton here or Bobby Massie. The other guy I like is FS Markelle Martin, but he’s physically not as good as Allen and on a par with Jarrett. I would want him because I’ve pretty much bailed on those two.

  22. 22 deg0ey said at 9:50 PM on April 27th, 2012:

Is Hilton good value in the 3rd? I get the feeling he’s likely to be a mid-4th guy

  23. 23 ian_no_2 said at 9:56 PM on April 27th, 2012:

I’m thinking Martin definitely is not 3rd round value. Picking Hilton here would be in his range.. it’s a low third, but yeah the early part of his range

  24. 24 Baloophi said at 9:59 PM on April 27th, 2012:

I would value Childs before Hilton based solely on WR ability and take him in the 3rd before T.Y. That said, if the Eagles think highly enough of Hilton’s return ability / speed then a couple years from now the difference between 3rd and 4th round value won’t mean anything…

  25. 25 deg0ey said at 10:05 PM on April 27th, 2012:

Yeah, I guess my point was more that we might be better off going CB in the 3rd if they can get someone like Hilton in the 4th…

  26. 26 ian_no_2 said at 10:07 PM on April 27th, 2012:

I still like Hilton better than Childs, but as much as Sanu

  27. 27 TrentColeHamels said at 9:48 PM on April 27th, 2012:

Tommy, do you think the eagles wanted Jeffery, is that why Chicago jumped ahead of us?

  28. 28 deg0ey said at 9:48 PM on April 27th, 2012:

I think we’re starting to get to the area that the Eagles could trade up into if they think their CB target might be off the board…

  29. 29 deshawnbentley said at 9:53 PM on April 27th, 2012:

What are your views on Alfonso Dennard this round?

  30. 30 TommyLawlor said at 10:25 PM on April 27th, 2012:

Not a big fan. Best at off coverage.

  31. 31 Westport_Johnny said at 9:57 PM on April 27th, 2012:

Tommy, reasoning for taking kendricks over david for LB?

  32. 32 TommyLawlor said at 10:25 PM on April 27th, 2012:

David is light. Kendricks 240 and has good power.

  33. 33 bridgecoach said at 11:10 PM on April 27th, 2012:

My question is why Kendricks over Wagner? Wagner has more size, as much speed and athleticism and more experience playing OLB.

  34. 34 ian_no_2 said at 10:00 PM on April 27th, 2012:

Let’s not forget Robert Turbin. He will probably go in the 3rd.. my first choice right now, unless Boykin or a good CB is on the board

  35. 35 ian_no_2 said at 10:02 PM on April 27th, 2012:

Mohammed Sanu is still around too, probably not for long

  36. 36 Baloophi said at 10:01 PM on April 27th, 2012:

    TE’s still available, too…

    Orson Charles
    Michael Egnew

  37. 37 Baloophi said at 10:05 PM on April 27th, 2012:

    Oops.

  38. 38 teltschikfakeout88 said at 10:11 PM on April 27th, 2012:

Mohammed sanu or boykin if they are both available at 88 what is the board value.

  39. 39 Jason said at 10:08 PM on April 27th, 2012:

As long as Kendricks can play on all 3 downs I’m happy. Then we can work out where Rolle and Chaney fit later. Picking a CB could be a go, but I think it would depend on whether DRC gets extended. Perhaps the Eagles were just waiting for Asante (and perhaps a falling Claiborne?), and now they will give DRC some cash. If so, then the need for CB lessens a bit in my mind, as we still have Marsh as the developmental guy.

I’m looking at slot WR or TE, depending on what formations Reid wants to use this year. Sanu could be the man, and I was gonna say Egnew at TE but he just got picked…

  40. 40 SportiVore said at 10:10 PM on April 27th, 2012:

Absolutely love our draft thus far. Stellar job.

Kendricks is a player. I don’t care about his height. This kid will be a star. Maybe the best LB in this class.

  41. 41 Joe Taylor said at 10:22 PM on April 27th, 2012:

I think we either go DT, Brandon Boykin, or a RB/WR.

Did Cameron Johnson go off the board yet? It seems virtually impossible for us to draft him now even if he is available but still….

Maybe we go OL depth or more LB competition.

    I just hope we don’t go QB…

  42. 42 TommyLawlor said at 10:25 PM on April 27th, 2012:

    Still want Boykin.

  43. 43 deg0ey said at 10:28 PM on April 27th, 2012:

Could Boykin’s injury be more serious than we thought? Can’t think of another reason that he’s still on the board…

  44. 44 Joe Taylor said at 10:31 PM on April 27th, 2012:

This looks like the best draft since ’03.
If we draft Brandon Boykin, I will give the Eagles a A+ grade.

Curry, Dixon, Cox, Graham: This set of back-up DLineman are better than a lot of 4-3 teams starting DL. Well…..At least based on potential. 🙂

BTW, could Chaney and Matthews play/challenge the WILL position or nah?

  45. 45 K.Y. said at 7:55 AM on April 28th, 2012:

Surprised that Boykin is still on the broad. The Eagles have not jumped up to get him. Perhaps they still have an option to take Mencie if Boykin is taken before our 4th round pick.

  46. 46 ian_no_2 said at 10:24 PM on April 27th, 2012:

Jayron Hosley is an intriguing CB since he has perhaps the best cover skills on the board, maybe not as good at Boykin for the slot but better out wide, and he returns punts very well while Boykin returns KOs. Hosley would seem to be the best value on the board now that Sanu’s gone, except for maybe Turbin

  47. 47 Patrick Clausen said at 10:24 PM on April 27th, 2012:

This have been an amazing draft. I’ll take Boykin, T.Y. Hilton, Antonio Allen in the 3/4 round. OL and OLB Danny Trevethan in rounds 5-7.

  48. 48 Baloophi said at 10:25 PM on April 27th, 2012:

    WR debate:

    Childs or Hilton…go!

  49. 49 scott_mather said at 10:31 PM on April 27th, 2012:

    What about Joe Adams?

  50. 50 Baloophi said at 10:33 PM on April 27th, 2012:

Sure, throw him in there, too.

Then it’s kind of like Childs vs. Adams/Hilton in terms of style and size.

I think I’d go with Adams or Hilton for return capabilities and speed. Childs is intriguing because of his size and has probably dropped because of injury this year, but I think we can get one of Tommy’s Michigan State guys later to fill that role…

  51. 51 SuPaFrO said at 10:26 PM on April 27th, 2012:

  52. 52 Jack Bauer said at 10:27 PM on April 27th, 2012:

  53. 53 Joe Taylor said at 10:33 PM on April 27th, 2012:

That’s what I’m thinking. But I think they might go OL or DL.

  54. 54 Baloophi said at 10:28 PM on April 27th, 2012:

Also, are there any more lineman for the Steelers to take?

  55. 55 Christopher Burak said at 10:32 PM on April 27th, 2012:

Found Nick Foles’ high school yearbook photo…

  67. 67 deg0ey said at 10:38 PM on April 27th, 2012:

With the awesomeness of the first 2 rounds, the screw-up had to be coming somewhere, right?

  68. 68 Joe Taylor said at 10:39 PM on April 27th, 2012:

I’m guessing the Eagles don’t see Kafka as the long term #2/potential future starter?

But most importantly we go for a QB over picking Brandon Boykins’? Someone that would be an upgrade over Joselio Hanson?

    SMH….

First disappointing thing of the draft in the Eagles perspective IMO…Don’t see the need for a QB in the 3rd.

I’m still very happy with our other picks and the draft altogether don’t get me wrong but….

  69. 69 R G said at 10:40 PM on April 27th, 2012:

Ive seen Foles 3 times. Will NEVER start in NFL. No way he was BPA

  70. 70 DamonL86 said at 10:40 PM on April 27th, 2012:

Well they were due to mess up at some point today.

  71. 71 deshawnbentley said at 10:41 PM on April 27th, 2012:

Don’t worry. We’ll eventually flip Foles for two seconds.

  72. 72 Joe Taylor said at 10:41 PM on April 27th, 2012:

Watch, Foles or whatever the hell his name is will be out of this league in 2 years. And the Giants will select Boykins’ with their 3rd round pick and Boykins’ will torment us for a decade…LMAO

  73. 73 deg0ey said at 10:43 PM on April 27th, 2012:

Just FYI, Brandon Boykin doesn’t have an s or an apostrophe in his second name…

  74. 74 Joe Taylor said at 10:47 PM on April 27th, 2012:

Just FYI, I know. Look at the comments a little bit above.

    Where is Brandon Boykin watch?

    ^^^Does that make sense?

No, you add the s and put the ‘ after it…I’m almost positive…

There you go, you learned something.

  75. 75 deg0ey said at 10:50 PM on April 27th, 2012:

What? Add an s and put an apostrophe after? You’d only do that if his name were a plural…

  76. 76 Joe Taylor said at 10:51 PM on April 27th, 2012:

I knew I was probably wrong lol

  77. 77 Cliff said at 10:55 PM on April 27th, 2012:

    Huh?

  78. 78 ian_no_2 said at 10:41 PM on April 27th, 2012:

Yeah I don’t like this. Andy is a great judge of QBs and maybe he thinks Foles is underrated. But you want someone better to start, and you don’t want to pick a backup in the 3rd. Edwards will be as good as Foles for a while.

  79. 79 TommyLawlor said at 10:54 PM on April 27th, 2012:

Reid must feel that Foles can be a starter in a few years. 3rd Rd pick is serious investment.

At least we didn’t pick Bryan Anger 😉

  88. 88 TommyLawlor said at 10:48 PM on April 27th, 2012:

I’m not a huge fan of the Foles pick. Has some talent, but wasn’t my cup of tea. Don’t like taking him in the 3rd. Eagles must really like him. I trust Big Red, but this still isn’t what I wanted.

Will need to watch lots of tape tonight to get a better feel for him.

  89. 89 Gregory Post said at 12:35 AM on April 28th, 2012:

If we were to go QB in the draft, realistically, which pick do you think would have been best for the Eagles?

  90. 90 Chris Tomlinson said at 10:48 PM on April 27th, 2012:

If there’s one position I’m going to trust Reid on, it’s QB. I’ll reserve judgment and just enjoy that it’s not Matt McCoy in the 2nd.

    Some wisdom in this logic.

I think this expresses my opinion best:

    Sheil Kapadia ‏ @SheilKapadia

So I assume #Eagles’ plan is to go with Vick, Kafka OR Edwards & Foles next year. Not sure backup plan is good enough.

  93. 93 47_Ronin said at 10:53 PM on April 27th, 2012:

So far this looks like one of the best drafts (at least the first 3 picks). The Eagles have drafted 3 good, athletic players on D. I have a friend who played for Cal @ LB with Hardy Nickerson he told me Kendricks is a beast…

  94. 94 the guy said at 10:58 PM on April 27th, 2012:

Between the Foles pick and the Giants taking the only two decent Hokies this year, all of a sudden I hate this draft.

  95. 95 Cliff said at 11:00 PM on April 27th, 2012:

    Let’s go Hokies!

  96. 96 wee2424 said at 12:48 AM on April 28th, 2012:

First 3 picks were great. If Foles ends up a solid backup then i still think the draft so far has been very good. However I am not really a fan of Foles and I would rather have had a CB like Boykins.

  97. 97 the guy said at 1:09 AM on April 28th, 2012:

3rd round seems a bit early to get a solid backup QB, especially since we hopefully already had one.

I also would rather have had a CB who could play slot.

  98. 98 Alex Karklins said at 11:00 PM on April 27th, 2012:

Paging Dr. M0rton . . . we have a code blue in the Eagles war room.

I loved the first three picks, but I am really bewildered by reaching for Foles.

  99. 99 Baloophi said at 11:03 PM on April 27th, 2012:

If I know M0rton he’ll try to spin Foles as the only good pick.

    You could be right!

  101. 101 Christopher Burak said at 11:00 PM on April 27th, 2012:

  102. 102 DamonL86 said at 11:05 PM on April 27th, 2012:

I think we just need to start trading away our 3rd round picks.

  103. 103 Jason said at 11:08 PM on April 27th, 2012:

If Foles was a random O-Lineman eg. Tony Bergstrom or David Molk, would any of you still have a problem with it?? There seems to be this big phobia about picking QBs unless they are YOUR guy… Sure, it’s not what I would have picked, but I’d give Reid benefit of the doubt. So a B- for that pick.

  104. 104 TommyLawlor said at 11:10 PM on April 27th, 2012:

I’m just not a huge fan of Foles.

  105. 105 phillychuck said at 11:12 PM on April 27th, 2012:

Arizona Wildcats football: Draft guru lists Foles as third-ranked QB
    Saturday, January 7, 2012

The new year has brought some good news for Nick Foles.

Mel Kiper, ESPN’s draft guru, lists the Arizona Wildcats’ quarterback as the third-best signal caller in the upcoming NFL draft. Foles’ stock was likely helped by Oklahoma quarterback Landry Jones’ decision to stay in school; it’s unclear where Arizona State quarterback Brock Osweiler, who announced Friday that he was bypassing his senior year of college for a shot at the NFL, fits in Kiper’s rankings.

Stanford’s Andrew Luck is, naturally, listed as the best quarterback available in the draft. Baylor’s Robert Griffin III, the newly minted Heisman Trophy winner, is second.

Kiper calls Foles a “really solid developmental prospect,” and lists him as a late-first or early-second-round pick.

“He’s a big kid, at 6-foot-5 and 240 pounds, is accurate, moves and throws well to both his right and his left, and has solid mechanics,” Kiper wrote on ESPN.com. “Questions for Foles start with decision-making, but I think he may have tried to force his throws too often as the team struggled, and the numbers tell some of that story. But you can draft Foles in the late first or early second round and develop him.”

Foles is looking to become the first UA quarterback in the modern era to be drafted by an NFL team.

I think that Lavonte David will be a far better player in the NFL than Mychael Kendricks. David was the best 4-3 LB prospect left after Kuechly.

Picking Kendricks over David was a mistake, imho.

Also, I am unimpressed by the Curry pick. He’s a hard worker that racked up some tackles and sacks on a bad Marshall team. No elite athleticism whatsoever. With the DEs already on the roster, I feel that Curry was a wasted pick because he hardly has any upside.

I rather would have seen the Curry pick end up being spent on Trumaine Johnson or Josh Robinson, two very good CB prospects still on the board at the time.

Also, why Nick Foles over Kellen Moore or Kirk Cousins? Moore and Cousins may not be quite as big as Foles, but they have better QBing skills and have a better shot at being starters in the NFL.

I for one am shocked, shocked(!), to find you are unhappy with the picks.

  117. 117 M0rton said at 12:46 AM on April 28th, 2012:

It’s not that I’m completely unhappy with the picks or think that they are atrocious. I am just disappointed that they reached for inferior prospects at two, maybe three separate occasions.

Lavonte David was clearly the best 4-3 LB prospect. Anyone who watched David in college and compared him to everyone else, including Kendricks, would probably say that. Mel Kiper, Mike Mayock, Wes Bunting, and many others considered David the superior LB prospect. The Eagles, for whatever reason, reached for Kendricks over a consensus better prospect at that position, just like when they picked Brandon Graham over, say, Jason Pierre Paul or Derrick Morgan. Maybe Kendricks will be decent, but I’d bet money that David will have the better NFL career.

Curry isn’t a terrible pick, but I just don’t see anything special from him, and the pick strikes me as a luxury pick when they should instead have been selecting one of the CBs left on the board such as Josh Robinson, Casey Hayward, or Trumaine Johnson. Again, if Curry was a great prospect with alot of upside that slipped into the 2nd round a la Justin Tuck or something, I would understand, but in my eyes, and the eyes of many others, Curry is just an effort/motor guy with limited athletic potential. You have enough guys like that already at the DE position.

  118. 118 Joe Malone said at 2:47 AM on April 28th, 2012:

As far as Kendricks goes, I think it goes back to scheme/what they were looking for in a linebacker.

In Kendricks, I feel they saw an extremely productive player/missle. He flys to the ball and has a knack to make big plays. Like Tommy pointed out, if Kendricks was 6’2”, he would be the perfect candidate for SAM LB for us.

I also think they love his versatility. He’s a 3-down LB who can play any postition in our LB unit. In Kendricks, we have, at the very least, a very productive nickel LB/role player on D. They also have to love his pass rushing skills. With the talent of our CB’s to play WR one one one, it will free up Kendricks to be that do it all player on 3rd down (and any down for that matter). He can run with TE, RB, slot WR, and close in on the QB with ease. Personally, I’m really excited to see what teams will do when they see all of this speed coming at them when we blitz Kendricks with our pass rush. What do you do if you saw this?

    Kendricks—-Cole–Cox–Jenkins–Babin.

and there all crashing in you… And I thought lasts years rush was dominant.

I do agree that David might be the better player in terms of overall abilities, but Kendricks much more athletic and seems to be a better fit for our scheme.
