Wrote my game preview for PE.com.

I feel good about this game.  Not great…but good.  Hoping this is the week we see an offensive breakout.

Jimmy Bama and I did a podcast previewing the game.  We talked about the Eagles, but also what a dysfunctional team the Lions are.  We also took a quick trip down memory lane, circa 1992.

For SB Nation Philly I took a look at Andy Reid and how he’s doing this year.  Jeff Lurie put him on notice…deliver or else.  We’re only 5 games in, but it is worth checking the situation out.

I also mentioned in the column who my #1 target to replace Reid would  be.  I’m not pulling for him to get fired, just thought I’d throw the name out there for fun.  Let me know what you think.

    Great stuff as always Tommy. Love your head coach rec. Don’t need a 5 star head coach to win with this team. I still say Andy Reid gets the job done and eventually wins a SB, but if not please bring in a coach who loves to run the ball.

      I’d love for Big Red to win it all this year. Part of that is for him, but most is for my selfish desire to see the Eagles win a SB.

    Tommy, just talked alittle bit about potential coaches on twitter with 2 others. What is your thought about Chip Kelly as a potential candidate should Reid get fired?

      Fascinated by him. Great offensive mind. I do wonder if he could handle coaching men vs boys. Chip has had some kids that got in trouble out there. Can he control a locker room of millionaires?

        In my perfect world, we win the SB, AR stays, but the offense performs badly and MM is fired and AR have to hire a new OC and he take a great offensive mind like Chip Kelly.to be his new OC.

    If Andy Reid is fired, there will be teams firing their head coaches just to have a chance at hiring him.

      Definitely possible. Hopefully he’ll win a lot this year and the issue won’t have to be dealt with.

        This is certainly the best outcome. I agreed with your frustrations in the SB Nation article too, though. Those games where you think, “I’ve seen this episode, and I didn’t like the ending,” make me wonder what it would be like to try to figure out a new coach’s frustrating blind spot.

        The vast majority of days, though, I still believe Reid gives s our best shot at being great.

          I believe Reid is our best shot on the majority of days too. I just wish more of those days were the ones after the games.

          I’m always a huge Reid supporter on Saturday, but sometimes not so much on Monday.

      Firing Andy Reid would be like having $20 in your pocket and spending it on scratch-off lottery tickets: maybe you hit it big, but probably you are left with less than you had before. I’m keeping my $20 because I understand math (and I want to spend it on beer).

      I agree that Reid would be highly sought ofter. I was listening to an ESPN talk show (I can’t remember exactly which one) before the season started and they were talking about coaches on the hot seat and Reid and Rex Ryan were mentioned. The commentator made a really interesting comment. He said that if both were to get fired Ryan wouldn’t even be thought about by over half the teams in the league. Then he went on to say that Reid would be unemployed for about 30 minutes. As an Eagles fan Reid frustrates the hell out of us, but I do think he is a great coach and respected by those in the NFL. I think David Shaw would be an interesting and an excellent hire by the Eagles were something happen to Reid. However, I think we have a really good coach now. The article that Tommy wrote a few weeks ago about Reid and his past experiences with the passing game was fascinating and really gave great insight into some of the reasons Andy does what he does today. As I said earlier, he can be frustrating as hell, but there are not many other coaches in the league I would want as our head coach.

    Not sure what he wants to do, but I would definitely go after Mike Zimmer. I like Todd Bowles also, but his resume is not as good as Zim’s.

    What are your thoughts on Jay Gruden as a HC candidate? I think he has done a great job in Cincinatti.
    The one concern I would have with bringning in a completely new guy is that there is a better chance of coaching staff changes. I personally really like our coaching staff and our roster. I think a guy like Jay Gruden who is familiar with this organization would bring something new iwthout having to change a lot.
    I would be open to replacing Castillo. Not because I think he is necessarily doing a bad job because he isn;t. If we bring in a 1st time HC I think they he should have a an experienced coordinator to handle the side of the ball they are less familiar with.

    Re: Stanford’s David Shaw

    Despite the tough loss at ND yesterday, I think Shaw’s doing more with less than most big-time college coaches.

    T-Law . . . I think you’re choice of Shaw is brilliant. He runs an NFL offense — not the kind of spread offense that’s made college and HS football like flag football.

    He has an NFL attitude — the punch-you-in-the-mouth attitude that Philadelphia hasn’t seen since (on offense) since Dick Vermeil.

    Shaw will be someone’s NFL coach next year . . . if the money’s right.

    Great choice.

    Re: Reid’s future

    Five years ago, Reid was still sort of a new, shiny toy with a bowl full of successful seasons.

    After losses every Sunday and Monday, he mumbled about injuries, that he needs to put players in position to succeed, and saying “time’s yours” . . . and many fans ranted about it out of frustration. (Players loved it.)

    That hardly happens now. It’s like we’re all numb.

    After 12 years of AR, are Eagles fans feeling the kind of emotions associated with a stale but okay marriage. Nothing’s really bad. In fact, things are *fine.* The kids are taken care of. The bank account is solid. The idea of a change is scary. But, at the end of the day, something’s missing that used to be there.

    So I wonder if the fans and AR, who puts a solid season together just about every year, have entered into the “Stale Marriage” phase.

    Yes, it’s scary on the other side. The next coach could be a Joe Kuharich or Jerry Williams or Eddie Khuyat . . . all of whom were WORSE than Rich Kotite. (Yes, that is possible.)

    I’m not advocating for AR’s departure. Just noting how the tone in the comments of the kind of fans who post here (and previously on Iggles Blog) seems to reflect almost resignation.
