Eagles Claim 3

The Eagles claimed 3 players on waivers.

Cool.

The bad news is that the Eagles must make room for them. My guess is that the Eagles will cut/trade OL Josh Andrews, WR Paul Turner and DB Eric Rowe. Andrews is a favorite of the coaches, but has little to no upside. He is what he is. Turner had a terrific preseason, but is another player with a limited ceiling. Rowe does have a high ceiling, but just hasn’t been a good fit with the new staff.

WR Bryce Treggs has big time speed. He ran 4.39 at Cal’s Pro Day. As a Senior, he was 45-956-7. That is 21.2 yards per catch. No player on the roster has that kind of speed or ability to stretch defenses. Treggs is tough enough to play the slot (like Turner), but has the speed to go outside and run by starting CBs. That wasn’t a critical need with Sam Bradford at QB, but Carson Wentz has a big arm and likes to throw downfield. Adding a speedy receiver should help him and the Eagles offense. As a point of comparison, Turner’s Senior season at La Tech…45-657-3. Turner is a good possession receiver. Treggs can be a playmaker.

I like this move quite a bit. There is no substitute for speed. Big plays are a huge part of today’s NFL. Treggs has the kind of ability to make those plays. And the Eagles have had some success with undersized, speedy WRs from Cal. The one downside is that Treggs has been dealing with an MCL injury for the past couple of weeks. He probably isn’t ready to play right now.

Kamu Grugier-Hill is a really interesting player. He played LB in college, but I projected him to Safety in the NFL. I had him rated as a 4th round prospect. The Pats drafted him in the 6th round and decided to play him as a LB/STer. Grugier-Hill reportedly did a great job on STs this preseason. He is small at 6-2, 215, but is athletic, physical and tackles well. He was a great STer in college so he really understands the importance of that part of football.

Terrence Brooks is the biggest mystery to me. He comes over from the Ravens, where personnel guys Joe Douglas and Andy Weidl came from. Brooks was a 3rd round pick in 2014 and played in 23 games over the last couple of years. I get the Eagles having interest in another young, talented DB, but I thought the team was happy with Jenkins-McLeod-Watkins-Maragos as a group. Adding a fifth Safety means taking away a player from somewhere else.

I can definitely see why Jim Schwartz and Dave Fipp would want a guy who hits like that for D and STs.

*****

What about players cut by the Eagles?

That means the Eagles can bring back as many of their guys as they want for the practice squad. We should get that announcement some time this afternoon.

Interesting additions. Do you think we’ll add a 3rd QB on the PS, or the 53 man roster? If so, which ones do you like and why?

  3. 3 Dominik said at 2:31 PM on September 4th, 2016:

I hope we get Hogan or Murray on the PS. Both know the system because of KC experience, both are young enough to develop into a legitimate #2 in the future, both are proven winners on the College level. I like this combination. Both don’t have good enough arm talent to become a starter, but we pay Daniels a lot of money and he doesn’t has an NFL arm at all. Maybe in 2017 or 2018, we get basically the same back-up, but much cheaper.

  4. 4 Johnnydeagle said at 2:35 PM on September 4th, 2016:

Good possibilities. I would hope for a QB with the biggest upside.

  5. 5 Dominik said at 2:39 PM on September 4th, 2016:

There is a Twitter rumor that we are interested in former Alabama QB Blake Sims. He was a #3 in the CFL (!!!) last year and then cut. Everything I need to know, honestly. That would be the kind of signing that would really suck. Not that it matters much for the PS, but it just would be very unnecessary to pass on QBs who may or may not be able to handle the back-up role in one or two years, vs. Sims, who has no upside at all. If it is to simulate RGIII in practice, we’ll probably sign WR and former college QB Watford to the PS – he can be the scout team Running QB.

Good news. Needs time, but could become the replacement for Sproles in 2017 or 2018. At least I saw flashes of NFL talent with him. And he didn’t have the whole Offseason, as we all know.

  13. 13 Dominik said at 2:28 PM on September 4th, 2016:

Isn’t it concerning that Treggs was cut by the 49ers, who have a very weak WR corps themselves, Tommy?

He was a 5* recruit (according to Scout) coming out of HS, Howie likes those kind of things. Jimmy K had an article about it back in 2013. http://www.philly.com/philly/blogs/sports/eagles/Eagles-scouts-dig-deep-when-evaluating-prospects.html

But he was an UDFA, despite his speed and big play ability.

Also, Grugier-Hill doesn’t look like a LB to me. Even for a WILL, he looks very light. Especially behind a Wide 9 front, that maybe wouldn’t be ideal. On the other side, if he is as good a STer as it seems, it could mean Brooks replaces Maragos as 4th Safety (1.5m saved, 200k dead) and Grugier-Hill replaces Maragos on ST. That wouldn’t be a bad idea at all.

The Eagles would still need a LB, then, though (Goode?).

  17. 17 BlindChow said at 3:35 PM on September 4th, 2016:

But why wasn’t he drafted? No one even wanted to take a flyer on him in the 7th?

  18. 18 Jernst said at 3:16 PM on September 4th, 2016:

No, because Chip is obsessed with blocking WR. He cut Jackson, Avant and let Maclin go in FA, but resigned Cooper, let Austin play all year and drafted Agholar. So if anything it’s a positive the 9ers cut him. Chip probably hated how fast and good at catching he was.

  19. 19 FairOaks said at 3:17 PM on September 4th, 2016:

I think Chip liked players who can catch. Probably does indicate that he doesn’t block well though, and that could be a tiebreaker for Chip’s cuts.

  20. 20 Jernst said at 3:19 PM on September 4th, 2016:

Obviously Chip doesn’t set out to find WRs who can’t catch. I was being facetious.

  21. 21 Greg Richards said at 2:30 PM on September 4th, 2016:

One pt on Treggs. Eagles’ mission this year was to find a franchise QB. I’m sure they watched tons of tape on both Wentz and Jared Goff. Treggs was one of Goff’s main targets so Roseman himself(vs. just the West Coast area scout) is probably very familiar with Treggs.

  22. 22 Greg Richards said at 2:30 PM on September 4th, 2016:

Yeah, dummy, but if they liked him that much they would have drafted him.

    Even TJ Graham was drafted…

  28. 28 FairOaks said at 4:11 PM on September 4th, 2016:

Reading a bit about him, he apparently runs good routes and has good hands, and can make adjustments to balls. Mostly a slot receiver in college. Fast 40 time at Pro Day but may not show as quick on the field. Slight build, and not much wiggle, so sounds like he’s not great blocking and will be tackled relatively easily.

He could end up being a faster Turner (who was definitely slow), though it sure felt better to have a guy we all saw catch balls consistently on the roster.

  32. 32 FairOaks said at 3:19 PM on September 4th, 2016:

A day? The deadline for all the guys cut at 4pm yesterday was noon today, so I’d guess sometime tomorrow we’d know. Probably several waves of waivers as teams cut players today to make room, who may be claimed tomorrow resulting in a few more cuts, etc.

    Sadness.

  34. 34 FairOaks said at 3:47 PM on September 4th, 2016:

Yeah, sucks for a guy to make the 53 then have it crash down. Eagles do need guys with sure hands, so he stood out in that way and might have made sense. On the other hand, not sure we had any speed WR left after cutting Givens. Keeping Turner on the 53 might have been a ploy to more likely get him on the practice squad (not available on the first day other practice squads are being made up), or a hedge against a guy they liked more getting claimed above them.

Turner seems like a less-strong Avant, but that kind of guy may make less sense with Wentz than Bradford, as Tommy noted.

Turner was legitimately the Eagles’ best receiver throughout training camp, but they felt waiver pickup “Bryce Treggs” offers a higher upside. The Eagles will likely try to sneak Turner through waivers and onto their practice squad.

The moves make very little sense… Chips trash to let go of Paul Turner? I don’t care about his size or the competition he played against. He was the only receiver who caught the ball consistently. Get rid of freaking Huff. I would rather have slow and steady than mr. Inconsistent. A 5th safety to get rid of Rowe? Rowe could easily be a 5th safety. And you just cut ED Reynolds who balled out as the 5th safety. Adding a LB is nice, but is he even better than Goode or Gause?

I agree with you on the safety and linebacker comments, but this fan base totally fell in love with a slow footed plodder who happens to catch. Sure, Turner played his heart out and was statistically the best wideout for the Eagles this summer. You also saw the absolute best he could be and against nfl starters, it wouldn’t be enough. Keeping him as the 5th WR is a waste as he can’t play special teams and he doesn’t offer much if anything on the field on offense. I’d rather take a flyer on a guy with a high upside. Keeping Turner on the PS means if the Eagles have an injury at WR, they can still pull bring him in. I somehow doubt teams will be beating Turner’s door down to sign him.

Practice squad players practice alongside regular roster players during the week, but they are not allowed to play in actual games. They can be paid considerably less than active squad players: The minimum salary from 2008 to 2010 was $5,200 per week (2008-2010)[2] for 17 weeks, or $88,400 per season, in comparison to the NFL minimum rookie salary of $420,000. In 2012 the minimum salary for a practice squad player was $5,700 per week, and the minimum rookie salary in 2012 was $390,000. Some practice squad players are paid considerably more, however. In 2006, the New England Patriots paid third-year player Billy Yates the full $425,000 he would have earned on the active roster.

Not sure we really have a 5th LB on the roster yet. So I doubt even this is final.

  93. 93 Greg Richards said at 6:12 PM on September 4th, 2016:

I don’t understand Josh Andrews love either. I thought he had a great 4th preseason game against the Jets last year that put him on my projected 53-man roster. With the other backups struggling, I thought he should get a chance but he never did. He hasn’t impressed me as much this year.

That said, I don’t think losing Hart is that big a deal. He’s had a nice preseason, but he was horrible last year. Of course, that was a different scheme, but he was just so bad. I have no idea why he was playing over Brandon Bair. Yes, he was younger but he couldn’t play. I think a good number of DT snaps are going to go to Curry or even Graham in nickel situations. Allen will take some snaps from Cox/Curry on run downs. Vaeao is a young guy that’s impressed. Shittu is on the PS. They may put Hart on the PS if he clears waivers. They could conceivable bring Mike Martin back once his knee gets healthier.

  94. 94 unhinged said at 5:12 PM on September 4th, 2016:

Adding a safety could mean replacing a safety. Watkins and Maragos are probably not nearly the best back-up pair in the division/conference/league. And on a completely different subject, I know that Rowe has had a sub-par PS, but did he crap on Jeff Lurie’s marble floor or something? The message that “the coaches just don’t like him” can sort of explain doghouse treatment, but it seems like there’s something else we aren’t hearing. Writing him off after a rookie season on a dysfunctional team, and a lousy PS seems abrupt to me. If he ever gets back to what he has sparingly flashed, he may be the subject of misery yet to be felt.

Yeah, something doesn’t seem right. If they don’t like him at corner, why not convert him to the #3/4 safety? He’s definitely not afraid to tackle.

    Injured?

  100. 100 Fufina said at 5:38 PM on September 4th, 2016:

He was injured most of camp but obviously the eagles liked what they saw in meetings and in OTA’s to decide it was worth investing in him and keeping him around for 2017.

  101. 101 A_T_G said at 5:16 PM on September 4th, 2016:

The Turner cut is disappointing, but not shocking. We’re Randle or Givins on the roster, I would be more disappointed.

I am confused by the other two moves, though. Safety seems full as Tommy mentioned, and LB seems empty. So we sign a safety and a LB that is too small to play LB.

I would think we aren’t done yet.

  102. 102 Lewwyn said at 5:18 PM on September 4th, 2016:

I mean, safety makes sense if they don’t really fully trust Maragos to take meaningful D snaps and want another safety to back up the main pair.

  103. 103 A_T_G said at 5:21 PM on September 4th, 2016:

True. If the guy can fill the ST role and offer something in terms of traditional D.

  109. 109 Fufina said at 5:37 PM on September 4th, 2016:

Well my theory on their think is this – you can utilize a combination of Braman KGH to make a OLB starter. KGH has the potential to be an impact nickle and dime defender in the future and worth attempting to develop in a game that is become more and more sub package, and when you need to load up the box i think you can use Braman as a SLB.

Think we may see Goode back on the team after week 1 once his contract is no longer guaranteed for the year.

  110. 110 A_T_G said at 6:43 PM on September 4th, 2016:

That thin, Riggs, real thin. Tissue paper.

  111. 111 Greg Richards said at 6:08 PM on September 4th, 2016:

I think Goode is eventually re-signed. The other two pickups I think are probably as much about STs as the D.

  112. 112 Jarock said at 6:10 PM on September 4th, 2016:

I’d hoped we were beyond signing guys just for teams. I don’t have a huge problem keeping a guy who’s great on teams over a guy who doesn’t care, but Chip’s mentality led to great ST’s and no depth. Still have nightmares of Maragos ‘trying’ to play safety.

  113. 113 Greg Richards said at 6:21 PM on September 4th, 2016:

I don’t know enough about Grugier-Hill to say how competent or not he is on D. I do know that Schwartz has said range is key to his defense. So, perhaps he’s looking to increase team speed.

  114. 114 Jarock said at 6:25 PM on September 4th, 2016:

That’s a possibility. I’d add to range that discipline is crucial in this defense. It depends on the DL attacking and LB’s absolutely cannot overrun the play. That’s what leads to the huge runs we saw when Castillo was ‘coaching’ the defense.

  115. 115 HawaiianEagle said at 5:24 PM on September 4th, 2016:

  117. 117 D3FB said at 8:43 AM on September 5th, 2016:

    I don’t think he runs a 6.2

  118. 118 DJH said at 5:56 PM on September 4th, 2016:

So is there any real concern about our older defensive FAs loafing it this year, as at least one writer is suggesting? I suppose it’s possible but I like to think they will play hard for Swartz, regardless of whether rookie Wentz is the QB.

  119. 119 DJH said at 6:02 PM on September 4th, 2016:

Really have to wonder if Peters will make it through the season. I’m sure for him it will be hard to stay focused say if we lose 2-3 games in a row.

I’m not doubting the move to trade Bradford, just that some bets on the team may not like the move.

  120. 120 Dave said at 6:09 PM on September 4th, 2016:

    Stephen Tulloch
    Nolan Carroll
    Chris Maragos
    Bryan Braman
    Bennie Logan

These are all of our defensive free agents next year. Who on this list are you worried about loafing?

  121. 121 DJH said at 6:58 PM on September 4th, 2016:

No, im concerned about the guys we brought in this year on defense. Knowing this may be their last year, if we struggle with wentz, they may not give 100%. Hopefully Swartz can keep them interested and motivated.

  122. 122 Dave said at 7:06 PM on September 4th, 2016:

McKelvin, Brooks and Bradham are mediocre placeholders for future draft picks/free agents. McLeod won’t be a problem.

  123. 123 DJH said at 5:59 PM on September 4th, 2016:

Wouldn’t now be the time to change course from “win now” mode and switch to building mode. So Rowe and Marcus Smith much safer?

  124. 124 Jarock said at 6:08 PM on September 4th, 2016:

Eagles have been sending mixed messages all offseason on whether they want to build for future or win now. Even with the Bradford trade, not convinced the coaching staff thinks they can’t win now. Time will tell.

  125. 125 Dave said at 6:12 PM on September 4th, 2016:

What do all these teams have in common?

    1997 Denver Broncos
    2000 Baltimore Ravens
    2005 Pittsburgh Steelers
    2007 New York Giants
    2010 Green Bay Packers

All these teams won the Super Bowl as a wild card team. Why can’t they win now? You don’t have to be the best team in the league, you just have to get hot at the right time.

  126. 126 P_P_K said at 6:17 PM on September 4th, 2016:

In 2011, NYG won the East but were only 9-7. They were hot and lucky both times they won the SB. At least they beat the Pats.

  127. 127 Dave said at 6:25 PM on September 4th, 2016:

The Giants success is one thing that has me excited about Wentz. He’s not afraid to sling it. I’m sure there will be mistakes and interceptions, but Sammy and Sanchez seemed to be risk averse. Both JMat and Ertz have made it very clear that Wentz likes the long ball and putting it up for receivers to get it.

  128. 128 Jarock said at 6:22 PM on September 4th, 2016:

With the exception of the 2000 Ravens, all had good to future HOF QB’s.

Ravens had one of the best D’s in nfl history.

What exceptional talent do the Eagles have? I like Wentz, but if he pulls a Roethlisberger in his 1st season, I”ll be shocked.

I like our defense, but no one’s confusing it with the 2000 Ravens.

Yes, it’s possible to win it all as a wild card. Generally, you still need at least one outstanding quality on the team though, not to mention quite a bit of luck. This is Philadelphia. The only luck we have is bad.

  129. 129 Dave said at 6:27 PM on September 4th, 2016:

ELi is a HOF QB because he won 2 Superbowls, they didn’t win the Superbowls because Eli is a HOF QB. Without those 2 Superbowl wins, ELi is marginal at best.

  130. 130 Jarock said at 6:33 PM on September 4th, 2016:

Agreed. Honestly, I’d stick Eli in the ‘good’ category, not HOF. Depending on the season, even good has been questionable.

  131. 131 Dave said at 6:41 PM on September 4th, 2016:

One thing Eli did was keep defense on their toes. He was willing to make any throw at any time (even into triple coverage). That was one of Sammy’s biggest downfalls.

Hated the Patriots more that year, but yeah. Wasn’t a fun Super Bowl to watch as an Eagle’s fan.

Sammy made me nuts with his patented, 6 yard swing pass on 3rd down. Went from feeling there wasn’t a 3rd down we at least had a chance to convert with Foles the previous year to, “it’s 3rd and long, time to punt.”

  135. 135 HawaiianEagle said at 6:54 PM on September 4th, 2016:

  144. 144 Stormbringer said at 6:43 PM on September 4th, 2016:

I’ll reserve judgement on Treggs. He doesn’t seem to show a lot of RAC with what I’ve seen but at least he was catching it with his hands. He is supposed to be a good route runner.

On the ‘potential’ front, Scout thought he was worth a 5th round draft pick:
    http://www.scout.com/college/california/story/1631103-bttv-does-bryce-treggs-have-an-nfl-future

Also, he is about the same size as Corey Coleman, Baylor WR from the 1st round who was lauded as a burner and his track PRs were superior:
    Treggs – http://www.athletic.net/TrackAndField/Athlete.aspx?AID=1028330#/L0
    Coleman – http://www.athletic.net/TrackAndField/Athlete.aspx?AID=1113107#/L0

  145. 145 HawaiianEagle said at 6:47 PM on September 4th, 2016:

But a little more upbeat – he never did spike the ball prior to crossing the goal line (like other CAL WR we may have seen in the past…)

  146. 146 Mitchell said at 6:55 PM on September 4th, 2016:

At the least Treggs can get open deep and make the catch something extremely valuable and extremely under-represented on the Eagles.

  148. 148 Dave said at 7:03 PM on September 4th, 2016:

According to this, he is not known for is long speed on the outside. Interesting that the Cal writers don’t think he has an NFL future.

NN: Obviously you all are a little biased, but what kind of pro career would you project for Treggs, independent of team and quarterback he is playing with?

LeonPowe: To be straight forward, I worry because he’s not a physical freak like Kenny Lawler and he’s on the smaller side without the DeSean Jackson speed to go with it, so I don’t know how good a pro he’ll be. I do know he’ll work his ass off and study and be the best pro he can be. Hopefully he’ll stick.

boomtho: I am a Cal homer, though I’m generally cynical… and sadly, I think it’s going to be pretty hard for him to stick in the NFL. Besides route running and on-paper speed, I don’t see much else he’s a “plus” at in the NFL—and that alone probably is enough to hold him back. I have full confidence he’ll be an A+ hard worker, team player, and locker room presence… but again, not sure that’s enough in this business.

  149. 149 Jarock said at 7:05 PM on September 4th, 2016:

Sounds like an upgraded version of Paul “the burner” Turner.

Hope he proves the Cal guys wrong and develops into at least a decent WR. Glad to hear that if he fails it won’t be a lack of work ethic.

  150. 150 Dave said at 7:10 PM on September 4th, 2016:

Thinking of Turner, could a guy like Jason Avant even have a career anymore? He basically ran digs and curls and got tackled immediately.

  151. 151 Jarock said at 7:12 PM on September 4th, 2016:

He blocked. Never forget, he blocked too. Honestly, I don’t know. Avant at least had decent size and understood how to shield defenders with his body. Turner’s lack of both size and speed is why I’m not all that broken up that he got cut.

  152. 152 Mitchell said at 7:20 PM on September 4th, 2016:

Wait, so he has speed, is a good route runner AND a hard worker? How does he not make it lol!?!

  164. 164 Dave said at 7:37 PM on September 4th, 2016:

I just watched the Spadaro interview with Howie over at the mothership. These are always good and I highly recommend watching. Howie was pretty forthright about building through the offensive line, defensive line, and secondary. LB seems like an afterthought, sort of like how JJ never had a big affinity for top tier LBs.

Too bad McKelvin, Carroll and Brooks are mediocre, at best. CB play is going to suffer this year. Thankfully, our safeties should help mask some of the inferior CB play.

  165. 165 Dave said at 7:40 PM on September 4th, 2016:

Howie also made it clear that although Wentz only played a half of preseason game, he has clearly blown the coaches away in training camp practices and the meeting room. He said this is what allowed the Bradford trade to happen.

  166. 166 GermanEagle said at 7:42 PM on September 4th, 2016:

I seriously think that our CBs are highly underrated this year.

  167. 167 Dave said at 7:45 PM on September 4th, 2016:

Jameis Winston and Ryan Tannehill would tell you otherwise about Nolan Carroll. They made him look like Bradley Fletcher.

  168. 168 Fufina said at 8:22 PM on September 4th, 2016:

This is a different scheme that tends to go about things quite differently, and i like the way we have built the secondary to reflect that. Schwartz plays a lot of zone on money downs, which leaves our CB’s significantly less exposed. Leave the playmaking to our Safeties and DL and hope that the CB’s tackle well and keep things in front of them and we should be pretty solid. Will a few elite WR/QB pairing punish us during the season? I am sure they will but that happens to most teams.

  169. 169 Dave said at 8:54 PM on September 4th, 2016:

He got beat in zone, he got beat in man in both of those games. I wouldn’t call Winston or Tannehill and any receiver on either team elite. There is a reason McKelvin and Carroll both got less than $3M per year as free agents. That’s why I don’t get the Rowe situation. McKelvin and Carroll older and have limited upside. Rowe is young with a high upside. I would rather have Rowe learn and be good in a year or two, then ride the bench for Carroll and McKelvin. This isn’t like Lito sitting behind Tory Vincent.

  170. 170 Jarock said at 8:50 PM on September 4th, 2016:

McKelvin’s played very well in this scheme in the past. Fits his skills. He’s getting up there and obviously isn’t a long term solution. Carroll’s average. Maybe a bit better than average depending on the scheme. On the positive side, he’s a grinder. Hard worker who’s still trying to improve. Negative is he’s never going to be all pro, no matter how hard he works. Brooks I haven’t seen enough to have an opinion.

Both the safeties and the d-line play should help mask the corners. I’m more worried about the linebacker play, especially with the lack of depth.

  171. 171 Dave said at 9:05 PM on September 4th, 2016:

I believe McKelvin biggest knock is injuries.

I like Carroll but after how he ended last year and the lack of interest in him during free agency makes me believe he is easily replaceable. He must be an all-world practice player while Rowe must be a crappy player during practice.
