We found out who the Eagles cut to make room for the players they claimed on waivers. We also found out half of the practice squad.

Hart is a surprising cut. He was drafted to be a 3-4 DE, but made the transition to DT in the new defense and played well this summer. Hart was especially effective as a run defender. He had a very strong preseason. The Eagles turned out to be deeper at DT than they ever expected. Beau Allen played lights out and rookie Destiny Vaeao was very impressive as well.

I am surprised that the Eagles are sacrificing a DT so they can add a DB. The one place that does make sense is on STs. If Brooks is active on gamedays, he could help on STs. Hart would offer help trying to block kicks, but Brooks could be a core STer. This isn’t a case of the Eagles trying to get rid of Hart. They were impressed by him this summer. They could try to keep him on the practice squad if he goes unclaimed.

One person this does say a lot about is Vaeao. Clearly the Eagles are high on him. They didn’t want to cut him for fear he might get claimed. Vaeao is a very good fit for the Eagles defense and could be a key backup. He also has starting potential.

Turner is the cut that will get the most coverage, but it did make sense. One of the hardest things to do is evaluate preseason football. I can’t tell you how many guys I said were a lock for the roster over the years only to see them get cut. Some of the players did get picked up by other teams, but none had success. I’ve tried to learn my lesson and keep things in context.

Turner played well in Training Camp and the preseason. He ran good routes and caught the ball well. He looked like a natural slot receiver. The problem is that he didn’t show enough speed or athleticism to get open on the outside. Remember the great catch vs PIT? The DB was all over him. You love the fact Turner made the crazy catch, but get concerned that he had no separation 20 yards downfield. Turner caught a few passes on shallow crosses. He was tackled by ILBs instantly.

Some team might claim Turner if they are looking for a slot receiver. I think the Eagles have a real good chance of getting him on the practice squad. Turner can play in the NFL but he’s going to be a role player. Having sure hands and running good routes are attributes you want in a receiver, but that’s not a guy you make a key part of the offense. At some point, you need playmaking ability.

Jason Avant
6-0, 212
40 – 4.62
VJ – 37 inches
3C – 7.02
SS – 4.19

Paul Turner
5-10, 193
40 – 4.55
VJ – 39 inches
3C – 7.25
SS – 4.31

Turner is almost 20 pounds lighter than Jason Avant, but is basically the same athlete. To put things in even more perspective, Jason Kelce did better in the 3-cone and short shuttle drills than Turner.

Yes, Turner played well this summer. But keep that in context. He wasn’t going against starting CBs. He was getting open based more on route designs than his physical ability. I don’t see Turner ever as a starting NFL WR. I’d love for him to prove me wrong and have a year where he caught 60 passes and had 8 TDs, but the chances of that happening are equivalent to Jimmy Bama winning a Pulitzer. Okay, that might be going too far, but you get my point. At his best, Turner is likely a 42-476-2 type of receiver. Teams need players like that, but they come after guys with playmaking ability. That’s why the Eagles wanted Bryce Treggs and were willing to waive Turner.

Some people have tried to make the argument that cutting Turner shows the preseason means nothing. That’s not true at all. Preseason results are very deceiving. Turner led the NFL in catches this preseason. But he had no TDs and only averaged 9.7 yards per catch. Treggs only caught 2 passes for 29 yards. Scouts and coaches studied the tape and saw Treggs show more explosion and athleticism than what they saw from Turner. They watched all the plays, not just the ones where the ball happened to go to the receiver. Turner had better results, but Treggs showed more ability.

It was fun to see Turner play well this summer and I hope he sticks around, but the Eagles made the right decision to go with Treggs.

C.J. Smith is another UDFA (like Turner) that surprised me with how well he played. Smith got some good pub during TC, but really got my attention when he picked off the pass in the end zone at the end of the Bucs game. That was an impressive play for a rookie in his first game. He only got better from there. And the Eagles wisely gave him more time and let him play against better competition.

The argument for Smith is that he has good ball skills and showed good coverage instincts. A big part of being a good corner is being smart and knowing what’s going on in front of you. Smith tackled pretty well and carried himself like a veteran. He absolutely looked like he belonged out there. Smith kept plays in front of him and got to the ball quickly. I don’t remember him giving up any big plays.

The downside for Smith is that he did give up a lot of underneath catches. You’d like him to be a bit quicker so he could break on the ball and make more plays. He did have 5 PDs, but that is with a lot of throws coming his way.

It sure looks like the argument came down to Eric Rowe vs Smith. Rowe did not have a good spring or summer, but is bigger, faster and more athletic. He has a higher ceiling and the Eagles aren’t ready to give up on him yet. Smith is another player I think the Eagles will want on the practice squad. I think he’s got the ability to play in the NFL. I’m not sure if he has starting potential. I can’t rule it out based on anything I saw.

Cutting Hart is my least favorite move here, but the Eagles are deep there so it does make sense. Turner and Smith are developmental guys that have some potential and you’d love to keep around for the future. The practice squad is perfect for them, assuming neither is claimed by another team.

*****

Speaking of the practice squad…

The Eagles like Greene a lot. I’m not as high on him, but there is something to be said for having a nasty, physical OG. Greene has to improve his footwork and pass protection before he can think of ever getting on the field in a real game.

I wasn’t sure if the Eagles would keep Cayleb Jones or Johnson. They went with Johnson, who is 6-1, 204 and ran a 4.39 at his Pro Day. That’s an excellent combination of size and speed. I didn’t see his speed on display much this summer.

Marshall feels like Darren Sproles in the making. Marshall played WR and RB at Oregon. The Eagles want him at RB, but as a player that can line up all over and do a variety of things. He could push for a roster spot next summer.

Shittu played lights out against the Jets. He was quick off the ball and disruptive. He’s not ready to play against starting caliber guys right now, but has the tools do develop. First order of business for him is getting bigger and stronger.

Watford is a former QB that showed promise. He has some size and got better as a receiver each week. He’s even willing to block and do the dirty work. I don’t have a good feel for his potential, but the Eagles saw enough there to want to keep him around as a developmental project.

We’ll likely get the other 5 members of the PS on Monday. I’m sure players who were cut today are part of the process and they need time to clear waivers before the Eagles can try to add them.

In case you want thoughts on the players the Eagles claimed earlier today.

Any thoughts about the QB situation, Tommy? Greg floated an interesting name: Bryn somethingorother who tor he’d us last preseason as a Raven.

Think they will wait till after week 1 and will look to add a vet QB who would no longer have his entire year guaranteed.

Not sure i am that interested as the eagles adding a young QB at this point. Will be the Wentz show for the next 2-3 years at least and they will look to draft a young cheap QB mid to late some time in the next 2 years to replace Chase. Taking a young developmental guy now does not really match the teams need in 2016 or timeline in the future

There aren’t really any veteran QBs out there worth a damn. T.J. Yates? Jimmy Clausen? I’d rather have a PS guy.

I figure we have a staff built to train QBs, we are going to be in teaching mode, why not develop a guy that might turn into a draft pick in a few years? A journeyman inactive on game days does nothing for me.

I’m kind of surprised that the Eagles didn’t sign Quentin Gause to the PS. I thought he played relatively well this offseason. Maybe they’re looking for someone with a little more experience.

  19. 19 A_T_G said at 8:53 PM on September 4th, 2016:

There definitely seems to be a discrepancy between what fans Re seeing and what the staff is trying to do with LBs. it will be interesting to watch.

  20. 20 Dave said at 9:09 PM on September 4th, 2016:

Could it be that they think they’ll be in nickel a lot and only have three LBs on the field during 1st down?

  21. 21 Jarock said at 9:10 PM on September 4th, 2016:

Why sign Tully then? He’s a 2 down LB at best.

  22. 22 Dave said at 9:11 PM on September 4th, 2016:

    Worried about Hicks injury history?

Edit:. Maybe move Barwin in an emergency situation later in the season.

  23. 23 Jarock said at 9:16 PM on September 4th, 2016:

Worried about the lack of internal consistency to the logic. If you sign Tully due to Hick’s injury history, why not keep Goode given both Bradham and Kendrick’s history? Why sign a 215lb player to play LB and say, “we’re going to be mostly in nickel” if you only have two OLB on the team?

Anyways . . . . no way for fans to answer these questions. Only time and what the Eagles actually do will tell.

  24. 24 Dave said at 9:17 PM on September 4th, 2016:

I like that the conversation is about depth, not starters. We’ve come a long way at LB over the years.

  25. 25 Greg Richards said at 9:18 PM on September 4th, 2016:

I’d say there’s a 90% chance Goode is back either later this week or after Week 1.

  26. 26 Jarock said at 9:21 PM on September 4th, 2016:

Probably. I worry someone else will scoop him up. I also don’t understand cutting him from the special teams aspect. He was very good on teams. We have two guys, Maragos and Braman, who are only making the team because of their special teams value. Both would be liabilities if actually asked to play.

Kelly wore me out with his special teamers over possible regular players when depth kept biting us in the ass.

  27. 27 PacificPurl said at 4:40 AM on September 5th, 2016:

Why do you keep referring to a coach who is no longer here and has nothing to do with this team?

  28. 28 Jarock said at 6:35 AM on September 5th, 2016:

Because his fingerprints are still all over the team.

  29. 29 Greg Richards said at 9:14 PM on September 4th, 2016:

Doesn’t fit the “more experience” angle, but I noticed that the Bucs didn’t re-sign LB Luke Rhodes to their PS. He played really well in preseason and I have to think it was his own choice to sign elsewhere. William & Mary guy so Philly is closer to home.

    Boooooooo.

I honestly don’t know shit about the guys we signed to replace them but I love pulling for the home grown talent. The Taylor Hart move was puzzling though, I thought he looked really good.

  35. 35 Dave said at 9:08 PM on September 4th, 2016:

Maybe his injury was worse than let on by the team.

  36. 36 Jarock said at 9:08 PM on September 4th, 2016:

I’d think he’d have gotten an injury settlement then. I’m a bit surprised they let him go as I thought he played well this year.

  37. 37 Ray888 said at 9:40 PM on September 4th, 2016:

    Right, just saw that.

  38. 38 Media Mike said at 6:45 AM on September 5th, 2016:

I’m only puzzled by the fact that they weren’t able to recoup any compensation for him.

  39. 39 SteveH said at 8:59 PM on September 4th, 2016:

Here’s something that’s always kind of bugged me about cutting guys based on athleticism… The team is aware of Turners #’s before he even comes into camp, so why invite him at all if you’re going to cut him even if he plays lights out?

I realize theirs a certain # of “camp bodies” in TC, but you’d think they would at least invite people that they would be willing to keep if they shock the world and play like gangbusters.

  40. 40 Jarock said at 9:06 PM on September 4th, 2016:

You make a good point, but I think they look at how the player plays as well as the statistics. As Tommy mentioned, Turner made some great catches, but was getting little separation on any plays. Sometimes guys play beyond their numbers. Jerry Rice is the classic example. Unfortunately, Turner’s #’s appear to be an accurate reflection of his ability to separate.

  41. 41 Dave said at 9:07 PM on September 4th, 2016:

Maybe Dougie values pass catching ability over everything else, unlike Chip.

  42. 42 SteveH said at 10:23 PM on September 4th, 2016:

I’m not going to bother looking it up but I feel confident that Jerry Rice had better measurables than Paul Turner.

  43. 43 Jarock said at 10:48 PM on September 4th, 2016:

He was bigger. Much bigger. I know for a fact Rice ran a 4.6 40 though which is nothing special. You’d never know it on game day though.

Edit** I was actually generous. Took the time to look it up and Rice ran a 4.71.

  44. 44 Mitchell said at 11:14 PM on September 4th, 2016:

.2 seconds doesn’t mean much if you run an excellent route leaving the defender criss crossed and looking for his jock.

  45. 45 Jarock said at 11:27 PM on September 4th, 2016:

Agreed. As I said, they gave Turner the chance to show he could outperform his stats. Based on the lack of separation, he really didn’t. Yes, he caught everything thrown his way, but that was more a function of the routes than him beating guys.

Rice is in a class by himself when it comes to play time vs. clock time. Not the only guy, but you’d never believe he ran 4.7 or anything close to it based on what he did on the field.

  46. 46 James Adair said at 1:34 PM on September 5th, 2016:

Did he really take it seriously though? He is much faster than that. Might even have a had an injury. The 40 wasn’t given as much weight in ’85 as it does today.

  47. 47 Anders said at 4:45 AM on September 5th, 2016:

I wouldnt call 11.9 YPC and zero TDs for lightning up. Also shameless plug from JasonB on BGN:

“You know who led the entire in NFL in passing this preseason? Matt Barkley.
You know who led the entire in NFL in rushing this preseason? Mack Brown.
You know who led the entire in NFL in sacks this preseason? Marcus Rush.
Anyone care to guess what these guys have in common with Paul Turner?”

  48. 48 Greg Richards said at 6:29 AM on September 5th, 2016:

At least Turner made his team’s initial 53-man roster.

  49. 49 deg0ey said at 3:39 PM on September 5th, 2016:

I think they kept Turner because he was a good #5 WR and if nobody with a higher ceiling became available then they were happy to keep him for a season and try to upgrade next year. They obviously liked Treggs more and decided he was worth bringing in instead so they made the move.

  50. 50 truehaynes said at 9:04 PM on September 4th, 2016:

Why cut turner and keep Andrews. I’m baffled by that

  51. 51 Jarock said at 9:07 PM on September 4th, 2016:

I don’t think any of the fan base is an Andrews fan. I’m not either for the record. All I can say is the coaching staff must feel he’s an adequate backup no matter what we think.

  52. 52 Media Mike said at 6:46 AM on September 5th, 2016:

    Why keep Andrews period?

  53. 53 #IHSH*SB50AllDay said at 9:07 PM on September 4th, 2016:

The 1st part of playmaking ability is CATCHING THE BALL. THe rest is crap. Every Paul Turner 8 yard reception helps move the chains. Every Josh Huff drop, or fumble helps the punter get paid. It’s dumb logic Tommy. I like you a lot. But that’s really dumb logic

  54. 54 Donald Kalinowski said at 9:11 PM on September 4th, 2016:

The problem is separation. The QB isn’t going to throw to Turner if he’s covered all the time. He essentially becomes a black hole on offense.

  55. 55 SmashmouthMoAllDay said at 9:14 PM on September 4th, 2016:

I don’t buy that. The QB isn’t gonna throw to a guy who continually drops the ball. He will throw to a guy who makes an effort and comes down with the ball consistently

  56. 56 Mitchell said at 9:50 PM on September 4th, 2016:

Thats describes no WR on the Eagles so it looks like they are in a bit of a pickle!

  57. 57 SmashmouthMoAllDay said at 9:17 PM on September 4th, 2016:

Look maybe Huff and Agholor turn the corner. But Right now you got 1 trustworthy WR-JMatt. Don’t know what you have in DGB. I’m watching the 9ers right now trying to get a grip on this Treggs kid, but through 3.5 quarters I haven’t seen him on the field

  58. 58 Jarock said at 9:17 PM on September 4th, 2016:

He’s been injured. That might have as much to do with why he was cut as anything.

  59. 59 BlindChow said at 10:47 PM on September 4th, 2016:

    lol, even better!

  60. 60 Jernst said at 9:54 PM on September 4th, 2016:

He led the NFL in preseason receptions so obviously the QBs were throwing to him and he was getting some sort of separation.

  61. 61 Jarock said at 11:16 PM on September 4th, 2016:

Against deep scrubs. Watch the plays. Tommy even points it out. Crossing routes, he’d get tackled immediately. That great 1 hand catch, guy was right on top of him. Ball probably should not have been thrown there. Throwing to a guy who’s covered that closely is a recipe for picks. Didn’t Chase throw enough of those for you already?

  62. 62 BlindChow said at 10:47 PM on September 4th, 2016:

Great receivers aren’t great because there’s a 10-foot space around them every time they catch the ball. They’re great because you can throw them the ball even when they’re covered, and they still manage to catch it.

(note: I’m not saying Turner is great, just that this constant refrain of “SEPARATION!” misses a key point about NFL level competition…it’s understandable as an Eagles fan because the last few years our QB’s were terrified of throwing into traffic and the opposing receivers always seemed to be wide open against our lousy CB’s.)

  63. 63 Stephen E. said at 11:34 PM on September 4th, 2016:

    Wes Welker’s 40 time was 4.65 seconds. 3-cone 7.09. Shuttle 4.01.

I must have imagined when he had 100+ catches multiple seasons. Brady couldn’t have been throwing at that slow little guy.

  64. 64 Jarock said at 12:03 AM on September 5th, 2016:

Look at those 3-cone and shuttle times compared to Avant’s and Turner’s. Welker lacks deep speed, but he’s quicker than a hiccup. One of the toughest covers in a short area in the nfl.

  65. 65 Call Me Carlos the Dwarf said at 10:42 PM on September 4th, 2016:

Like Donald said, it’s a lot easier to teach someone to catch than it is to teach them to be fast and quick enough to get open.

  66. 66 Media Mike said at 6:47 AM on September 5th, 2016:

I don’t think Tommy’s logic is dumb, it just happens to rate catching the football lower than both you and I think it should.

I’m in complete agreement that Josh Huff’s inability to hold onto a football is vile.

  67. 67 ChoTime said at 10:05 AM on September 5th, 2016:

I think it’s time to add Paul Turner to the Nate Iloa Hall of Game team.

  68. 68 FairOaks said at 10:25 AM on September 5th, 2016:

I think the general assumption is that you can always find WRs who can catch the ball. Yes, that skill was lacking on the team last year, and it was very comforting to see that skill wearing an Eagles uniform in preseason — and that’s what we want to see during the season as well, so he represented hope that we’d at least have one guy.

Tommy’s point though that preseason production does not equate to regular season production. We all know that preseason W-L means zilch, but it’s often the same for players, too. Plays they can make against 2nd-4th stringers are not there for them in regular season games. Teams will look at *how* they got that result, more than the result itself — if they showed a particular athletic skill that will translate against starters, or if it was just because of playing lesser competition.

Turner definitely has good hands, which after last year we are desperate to see on the field. He’s slow though, and not all that big, and it sure looks like he’d struggle a lot more versus starters. He might get you that five yard catch but he’s not often going to get you a whole lot more. There are usually a bunch of players on practice squads who can give you more — good hands with at least a little more speed, or good hands with better size so the skill will hold up versus more starting corners. The Eagles chose to see if they could find one. I hope they are right.

I’m with you that the players on the roster have not demonstrated that basic ability much (Matthews dropping passes early in both his seasons, Huff and Agholor pretty much all the time, DGB an unknown) and that is paramount, but it usually not a difficult skill to find in the NFL. Tregg’s college highlight certainly look like he can make catches in traffic and run good routes, though again, that is substandard competition and you’d really like to see it against NFL talent. At best, he’s probably just a much faster version of Turner, and that’s probably what the Eagles are hoping for. And if he catches the Eagles dropsy disease, hopefully Turner could still be there on the practice squad.

  69. 69 Donald Kalinowski said at 9:09 PM on September 4th, 2016:

I’m surprised Dillon Gordon and Josh Andrews made the team. It seems like the Eagles are really uncertain about the interior of their line. Brandon Brooks hasn’t been impressive, Kelce might be undersized for Pederson’s scheme, and neither Seumalo, Wiz, or Barbe have done much to take the other G position.

  70. 70 Dave said at 9:15 PM on September 4th, 2016:

I think they see the athleticism in Gordon and are intrigued if he can make the switch like Peters (who is mentoring him).

  71. 71 Jarock said at 9:25 PM on September 4th, 2016:

I really like Gordon. He’s not ready to play yet, but he’s too athletic to risk cutting and watch someone else swoop him up. If they can find a role for him playing goal line FB, I won’t complain either.

  72. 72 Dave said at 9:27 PM on September 4th, 2016:

They can use him in 4 TE sets:-o

  73. 73 Media Mike said at 6:50 AM on September 5th, 2016:

Gordon might be special. Can’t say that about anyone else on the fringe.

Gordon’s experience as TE allows you to move him around to a lot of places to created blocking mismatches.

  77. 77 Jarock said at 9:12 PM on September 4th, 2016:

Cause the NFL’s offices leak like a sieve. Never should have gotten the ‘Lane will be suspended’ news before the process was finished. Now, we all wait and wonder.

  80. 80 deg0ey said at 3:42 PM on September 5th, 2016:

Not sure how that would work, the rule is pretty clear – second violation is an automatic 10 games. At this point, I think he either gets 10 games or he gets nothing.

  81. 81 Duracell said at 5:29 PM on September 5th, 2016:

Two reasons I think they might decide not to implement the full 10 games:

    1) His first suspension was for a substance that was no longer banned a year later.
    2) If his story is true, while he should have done more due diligence, he actively tried not to violate the policy.

To avoid a potentially long appeal, I could see them negotiating the length down with the agreement that Lane won’t appeal. Probably wishful thinking.

Bears have informed Pro Bowl kicker Robbie Gould that he is being released, league source tells ESPN.

Wonder if Cody Parkey gets a job. He and Connor Barth are best guys available.

I believe the corners are better than most think, but I don’t think they’re that good. Top 10 would thrill me. Top 15 is more likely especially as I expect the offense to struggle leading to more possessions for the defense to deal with.

Perspective. Eagles were 30th last season in total yards per game. 28th in points. Yards per play, which is the best measurement of last season’s D given Chip’s pace preferences, they were 21st.

I’m predicting top 15 with top 10 possible and I’m glass half empty guy 🙂

  127. 127 ChoTime said at 11:30 PM on September 4th, 2016:

Surprise can come from a difference in either direction 🙂

I am with you. They have a few good pieces, but not enough, and did not suddenly get some kind of talent injection this offseason. They have a rookie head coach and look to be playing a rookie QB at least sometime in the season.

I’m predicting top 25. Hey… the Superbowl winner is top 25, too.

  128. 128 BobSmith77 said at 11:44 PM on September 4th, 2016:

I’m interested too in the turnovers (which this defense was pretty good at under Davis finishing t-6 in 2014 and t-9 in 2015.

Ditto the pass rushing stats especially on non-blitz situations.

  129. 129 Jarock said at 11:49 PM on September 4th, 2016:

Yards per play and 3rd down percentage are the best indicators of just how good a Chip Kelly defense really is imho. Turnovers are nice but are often a measure of how good your opponent is as much as how good your D is.

  130. 130 BobSmith77 said at 11:37 PM on September 4th, 2016:

Top 10 is more reasonable but I agree with you. Notable improvement, some hiccups, and somewhere in the #10-15.

  131. 131 PacificPurl said at 4:26 AM on September 5th, 2016:

How can this be? The offense only struggled leading to more possessions for the poor souls on defense to deal with because of Chip! Right?

  132. 132 stephenstempo said at 4:11 PM on September 5th, 2016:

Yes this is 100% correct. Seeing more snaps can easily have an effect on yards per play. If you assign a % chance for any team to gain yards on a play then you have to factor in that a defense will then statistically be more likely to give up bigger plays just based on the fact that they see more plays and there are more opportunities to see X plays. A single 45 yard play in a game can have a big impact on the YPP.

  133. 133 Media Mike said at 6:56 AM on September 5th, 2016:

I’m smelling around 10th. I think 15th is too low given how bad a lot of teams are on D. Top 5 is a tad rich for my blood.

In the highlight video, he can definitely catch (and in traffic). I’m just not sure about the “streaking” thing… way faster than Turner, but not an NFL blazer. He doesn’t have any shiftiness, so he’d have to be beyond the defenders to get much YAC. Highlight tapes also don’t show you how consistently he catches, which is what we liked about Turner, so jury out on that.

Some random thoughts/questions: 1. I wonder if they claimed any players that were awarded to other teams. They still need more LBS. 2. I think it is evidence that the bottom of their roster was weak that no one was claimed and only one was signed to another teams PS. 3. I was surprised by the Hart cut since he seemed to adopt well to the new D. I would have thought that Means, Andrews or Mills would have been cut before Hart.

“But we worked too hard over the past three years to put all that time and energy into drafting and developing a solid core of this team. I was taken aback who they were asking for. Players who’d been in the Pro Bowl.”

I’d love to know what teams were asking for which players.

  183. 183 D3FB said at 8:04 AM on September 5th, 2016:

It would’ve been Barr. He’s a monster and on a rookie deal.

Harrison Smith just got a new big money deal that would’ve made it really hard to trade around.

Maybe Everson Griffen. Contract is pretty tradeable and he’s consistent although he turns 29 in December.

Pretty sure Josh Andrews continued presence means:

    1. Team thinks Lane is going to get suspended soon

    2. Wiz is going to be the starting LG when that happens. Seumalo doesn’t know C yet because he missed OTAs so you need a C off the bench. If Seumalo was starting you could get away with Tobin and Wiz as your backups.

  203. 203 Greg Richards said at 8:36 AM on September 5th, 2016:

Agreed. Then my guess is when Lane is suspended, Goode is re-signed.

  207. 207 Greg Richards said at 9:02 AM on September 5th, 2016:

Also, Seumalo is still coming off injury. They might have ?s about whether he’ll be ready for Week 1 and want a backup C active instead of having to swap Wisniewski to C and put Tobin in at LG. I think Tobin has been practicing exclusively at LT this camp.

  208. 208 D3FB said at 9:06 AM on September 5th, 2016:

    I don’t follow – help me out here –

We might lose our top RT/LT therefore keeping a bottom-tier interior OG/C backup is related? I haven’t heard a single thing about Andrews ever playing Tackle.

Are all OL interchangeable? Or we are that bad at T depth that we’ll use back-up to back-up interior guys?

  211. 211 D3FB said at 10:50 AM on September 5th, 2016:

If Lane is out, then Barbre is the RT.

If Barbre is the RT, then Wiz is the starting LG.

If Wiz is the starting LG and Kelce gets hurt, it’s easier to bring Andrews off the bench than switch Wiz to C. None of the other backups know C.

I think I like the deal the Eagles ended up getting more. If it’s a late pick then yeah getting Diggs might be better, but I think there’s a chance Minnesota implodes and we get a high pick.

Also based on the MMQB (really, go read it) our 2018 conditional pick is based on playoff performance this season. Our first rounder obviously is based on record. So, we want the Viking either to lose big and miss the playoffs by a wide margin, or go deep into the playoffs. First round exit would be worst case.

Don’t know why the Broncos didn’t sign him to their own PS. He’s undersized at 6-4, 284 coming out of college. We already have 11 OL on active roster. Now 2 on PS. I’d think Lane suspension is coming soon.

Does this mean Turner and CJ Smith didn’t clear waivers? Good enough for the 53, but not good enough for the PS wouldn’t make much sense to me.

I read that even Hart would be PS eligble.

  247. 247 Rellihcs said at 10:03 AM on September 5th, 2016:

Well “good enough for the initial, doesn’t last a full 24hours 53” isn’t really “good enough for the 53″…

  248. 248 Rellihcs said at 10:07 AM on September 5th, 2016:

Still one spot so it doesn’t mean those 3 are definitely out. They could also drop someone who’s already on.

  249. 249 FairOaks said at 10:08 AM on September 5th, 2016:

It’s possible that if they get Turner, they would release one of the other WRs already on the squad.

There might be some reasons you’d want someone on the 53 and not the PS (one-year solution where you don’t believe in a player long-term but he can help you this year due to a skill lacking elsewhere). But given the statements that the Eagles wanted them on the PS, yeah, it might indicate that one or more got claimed. I would not be surprised in the least if Hart got claimed.

  250. 250 Greg Richards said at 10:15 AM on September 5th, 2016:

It’s kind of weird that they wouldn’t save spots for those 3 until they cleared waivers. Adding PS players that 1 or 2 of those guys have been claimed elsewhere. If they do cut someone else off PS to make room for those 3, I’d think it would be one of the 7 guys that were already in camp with the team. Don’t think they’d fly in Bonnett and Neary for one practice and then cut them this afternoon to make room. It’s also strange that we haven’t signed a real PS QB. Watford played QB in college and might be able to do some scout team work, but when you only have 2 QBs on the roster you need a legit prospect QB on the roster to elevate if you have an injury.

  251. 251 FairOaks said at 10:31 AM on September 5th, 2016:

Yeah you’re right — they need a QB on the practice squad. And that’s the one spot left. I could see dropping a WR for Turner (would you really want 3 WRs on the practice squad?), but less sure about spots for the other two.

  252. 252 Rellihcs said at 10:09 AM on September 5th, 2016:

  257. 257 FairOaks said at 11:50 AM on September 5th, 2016:

Of course, that may average in all of Bradford’s stats last year, which include his atrocious start. Bradford was much better the last 9 games, especially the last 3, which is what you’d want to see for a guy coming off large injuries in a new offense.

The Vikings were set up to win now, and Bridgewater going down would have sabotaged this season, and possibly the next. They were desperate, so they did overpay some. But if they get the latter-half Bradford, it could turn out well for them. They will also have a much, much, much better running game than the Eagles did last year, and a better defense, meaning he can be more of a game manager, and they may not need to throw the ball downfield that much.

Still will be growing pains with the new receivers but yeah he’ll be up to speed in a few games. I anticipate that he will be a solid replacement for Teddy.

Sam is not so awful as his worst detractors would say, but he’s definitely not as good as people quoting his stats over the last 7 games last year would have you believe. He is what he is, a reasonably solid middle of the road starter. But, in Minny he has a strong run game and defense to help him, so he should have some success.

for a guy coming into a new system, no offseason, 2 years lost due to injury i thought he got his shit together pretty quickly.

I’d wager that Bradford puts up middling statistics, a 90 QBR and the Vikings still win a bunch of games behind AP and the D. He’ll check down enough passes to look like a legit NFL starter.

  287. 287 SteveH said at 11:55 AM on September 5th, 2016:

Yeah I think on that team he doesnt have to be a superstar for them to be successful.

  288. 288 Fufina said at 11:55 AM on September 5th, 2016:

They will go 11-9 make the wild card and get bounced in the wild card round with Bradford failing to lead a last minute drive due to checking down on 3rd down.

11-9? The hell kind of record is that?

  290. 290 Fufina said at 12:59 PM on September 5th, 2016:

hahaha not entirely sure… 11-5 even

  291. 291 deg0ey said at 3:52 PM on September 5th, 2016:

Statswise he was better than Peyton last year and the Broncos won it all, so he can definitely be ‘good enough’ on a team that’s primarily built on AP & D.

  292. 292 FairOaks said at 11:54 AM on September 5th, 2016:

If he does well in Minny, that may move the 2018 pick up to a 2nd rounder. So I’m sort of rooting for that. (And the Vikings may be able to trade him after the season themselves.)

So yes, this really comes down to Wentz. Getting the resources back for Bradford means we won’t have invested quite so much that way though. If he is a viable franchise QB, then we are in pretty good shape.

The risky question is if Wentz is the kind of guy who was better served sitting on the bench for a year, or being thrown into the fire. There are lots of examples of each way.

  293. 293 BlindChow said at 12:05 PM on September 5th, 2016:

Personally, I’d prefer a higher 1st round pick from the Vikings next year, even if Wentz plays well.

Novice fantasy players rushing to elevate Wentz on their draft board………Looks at Eagles’ receivers…….Drops him back down.

  295. 295 Fufina said at 11:53 AM on September 5th, 2016:

Only place you draft him is in a dynasty league. I love Wentz the prospect but rookie QB, in this scheme and with his supporting cast is not going to put up worth while fantasy numbers early.

If he is playing well he might be a guy you grab off waivers for a specific match up later in the year if your starter is playing someone like the Broncos.

  298. 298 Gian GEAGLE said at 11:58 AM on September 5th, 2016:

I hope the Browns have to answer questions about all the shit they talked publically about Wentz, if the kid goes out there and has a solid game, beating the Brown… I want Wentz to stick it to the Browns so bad!!!

  299. 299 Fufina said at 1:13 PM on September 5th, 2016:

I expect Wentz will go out and put on a show – teams have 0 tape on him and they should be able to game plan some fun exotic things early to knock the Browns off balance.

Don’t think people have talked about how stupidly young and unexperienced the Browns roster is… they had 13 draft picks, stick on the roster and claimed 5 cuts from other teams. They have 17 rookies, 28 players with 2 years or less of NFL experience on the roster and 40 guys with 4 or less. People got excited with RG3 making some plays when teams were not scheming or spying on him with Josh Gordon playing and there is a narrative that developed that they are not some kind of dumpster fire.

They are – they have the worst roster for 2016 in the NFL, and may be one of the worst teams in NFL history by the end of the season.

Noooooo. Absolutely not…. I meant hopefully the players aren’t too down on trading away Bradford. With SAM gone, im sure they will back Wentz over Chase. Players don’t care that we got a first round pick for Bradford. Players want to win games Now

We should open the season going Play action BOMB down the sideline to DGB.. Browns would never expect us to let Wentz go deep on his first pass. They would probably eat that play action fake up since they probably expect us to hand the ball off to start the game and ease Wentz into the offense..

The NFL HASNT even ruled on Randy Gregory suspension yet(apparently the news of his reduced suspension was bogus) and he failed his test in Febuary, like 4 months before We got word of Lane’s failed test…
    ..
This process probably won’t be resolved fast enough to wait for a decision from the NFL before we get our roster straight

Makes sense – we’re probably not making a deep run this year whether he plays or not. If he doesn’t expect to actually win the appeal then it’s not like there’s much point in just delaying the suspension into next year when we might actually have a chance to compete.

Sit or start? Some very juicy analysis:

“But starting a high draft pick QB as a rookie generally led to a lower passer rating from him and worse win percentage in years 1, 2 and onward as compared to the QBs who are given the chance to develop and learn from the sideline.”

” But overall this tends to show that we are certainly not in the midst of a QB “era” where lots of great prospects are pouring into the NFL, forcing teams to start the less expensive and better option.”

“Also probably unsurprising, the players who were held out and groomed saw their passer rating significantly higher in their first year of action than those who started their rookie season. ”

“With very limited sample sizes, its evident that teams improve their win rate immediately by starting a high draft pick as a rookie. BUT, they don’t become winning teams that first year. They still average sub-.500 records.”

“For quarterbacks drafted in the first round of the draft over the last 4 years, we’ve seen them average their first start before their 4th game (3.7 games).”

“”I think this trend aligns very closely w/ head coach job security”, Joe noted. “Head coaches seem to have less time to develop players so they are playing into that trend by playing younger guys earlier when maybe they should be sitting them for a few more games. There’s a saying to college players coming to the NFL: ‘Everyone just got better except you’.””

” What we see is a downward trend in passer rating with when a QB takes his first start in the NFL.”
