4th Round – Eagles Add WR and RB
Posted: April 29th, 2017 | Author: Tommy Lawlor | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 276 Comments »The picks are in.
118- WR Mack Hollins – UNC – 6-4, 221
132 – RB Donnel Pumphrey – SDSU – 5-9, 176
Let’s start with Hollins.
Good WR, great STer. Some of you hear that and focus on STs. Do you spend a 4th to get someone who can cover kicks? Hollins does a great job of that and will make Dave Fipp a very happy man. But don’t overlook him as a receiver.
Hollins has a big body and long arms (33 inches). He ran 4.53 at the Combine. That isn’t great speed, but he is a terrific downfield receiver. He uses his long gait to eat up ground and get by CBs. He averaged 21 yards per catch for his career. Hollins wasn’t a volume receiver, only catching 81 career passes. He did miss half of his Senior year and that cost him about 20 grabs. He was an impact receiver. He had 20 TD catches.
I don’t see Hollins as a starter, but he can be a very good role player because of his ability to stretch the field and offer impact in the Red Zone. He’s a big guy with good hands and he will go up and get the ball.
The Eagles needed a player like Hollins. He helps on offense because the teams wants to throw the ball downfield and that’s his specialty. He also helps because the teams needs WRs to play on STs. Nelson Agholor might try some of that this year. DGB is in big trouble with this pick. He better play so well the Eagles have to keep him in the mix.
Hollins also fits what the team wants in terms of intangibles. This is exactly the kind of player Joe Douglas wants.
***
Mixed feelings on this pick.
Pumphrey had an amazing season for the Aztecs. He ran for 2,133 yards and averaged 6.1 yards per carry. That is insane production, whether mid-level competition or not. His size is a serious issue for me. He is only 176 pounds. He did 5 reps on the bench at the Combine. That went up to 8 at his Pro Day, but that’s not good either. He has short arms and small hands.
The talk is that Pumphrey will replace Darren Sproles. I think that is a major projection. Sproles was an outstanding returner in college. Pumphrey returned 5 KOs and no punts. He has to learn how to do that in the NFL.
Pumphrey was very durable in college. He got a ton of carries and didn’t get hurt. That does tell you this kid is tough and does play bigger than his size. The Eagles wanted playmakers on offense. Pumphrey does have the potential to deliver some big plays. He has 4.48 speed, runs well and can catch.
I’ll have to trust Joe Douglas, Doug Pederson, Duce Staley and Dave Fipp on this one.
The Eagles need to add another RB, whether in the draft or as a primary UDFA. It is also possible they could add a veteran free agent after the draft.
_
How the hell do you /improve/ to 8 reps?
By doing 3 more than 5?
60% better
#math
When you weigh 175 I imagine 8 reps isn’t an egregiously low total.
So, what are the mixed feelings? Cursing vs crying?
I like the Pumphrey pick because its fun and will give me pleasure to root for the kid. If you want to find a kid who can survive as an NFL RB/slot at 175lbs it will be Pumphrey… but he could easily just get destroyed at the NFL level due to his size. Will be interesting to see how it plays out.
I judge picks in how much they can help the eagles, not how fun they are to root for.
I think he can make plays for us, but we lack an every down back. Maybe they are higher on Smallwood than we are
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ImNf2KQ9xRw
Part of the reason I’m not a fan of the Eagles ever trading back to get more picks is that I don’t believe they’re good enough in the later rounds to know what to pick. At least early there are players who are more likely to succeed.
What intell do you have to judge how the Joe Douglas/Andy W/Roseman front office typically does in the later rounds?
Marcus Smith, Danny Watkins, Nelson Agholor, Daniel Te’o Nessheim, Jaquan Jarrett, Reggie Brown, Trevor Laws, Curtis Marsh, and Tony Hunt would like to have a word with you.
Watching Pumphrey’s highlights on youtube makes me a lot happier about his size. Dude just doesn’t get hit. Lightning change of direction; easily outruns CBs in the open field. He ran for 281 yds v Cal, and 151 v. Alabama this year (alright, it was South Alabama…). 🙂
Some speculation that the Cowboys were interested in him with the next pick. Any player we snake off the Cowboys i will support to the end of the earth.
Switzers a better player so we got got
While I wouldn’t be quick to give up on kids with untapped potential like Agholar and DGB who are still really young in their career and were learning an intricate west coast offense for the first time last season, I LOVE the idea of giving our young WRs another chance, but Also adding enough talent to make it tough on them, putting a ton of pressure on Nelson/DGB to work and perform this summer and earn another year on this team to prove that they aren’t Busts.
..
Sounds like this Hollins kid can learn the Tricks of the trade from Torrey interms of stretching/making plays down field, while also being suited to learn the jump ball craft from Alshon Jeffrey
..
Is this pumphry kid going to be used as a legit RB like SPROLES, or is it more likely that we see The Eagles use him as more of a slot WR who wins off quickness?
Why move up to ensure you get Pumphrey? What about him is so special and such a good fit for the Eagles?
Dallas wanted him
So we used a 4th rd pick to block a division rival? If that is the reason, that is pathetic
Yeah that’s it, the Eagles wanted nothing to do with him but pissed away a 4th anyway
Yeah, we used a 4th just to annoy our rival and hold him hostage. We have no intention of ever using him.
Stop being obtuse, man.
Upvote for ‘obtuse’ and the shawnshank redemption reference.
Well there goes Gallman to the Giants
Interesting, you can definitely see a change of philosophy on day 3 from previous years. The mantra for day 3 in previous years is get the guy with the tools to have a chance to be a starter or more, but dropped for whatever reason. No one here realistically projects to be a starter on day 3, so treat them like lotto tickets.
So far we picked 2 guys that project to role-players/contributors and seem to have a realistic chance to be that. There is no chance Pumphrey will ever be a starter, just a nifty piece to trot out and move around for a handful of snaps.
Have we seen any established veterans traded during the draft yet? Typically the 5th, 6th and 7th round picks are most likely to be traded for established players.
..
Does Malcolm Butler fit schwartz defense as a corner? Since he hasn’t been traded, now might be an oportunity to trade for the kid giving up a pick in next years draft instead of this draft when we really needed our picks?
We already don’t have a 2nd next year and a ton of guys on 1 year deals.
Yeah forgot about not having a second.
..
But for example if we acquired a starter right now for say next years 3rd round pick, it would be like spending this years pick on the player we traded for, while spending the 2018 pick we really traded away on Sidney Jones who probably won’t play until 2018 anyway
..
Getting a veteran for a 3rd in next years draft kind of balances out spending our 2nd in this draft on a kid who won’t play this year
We’re going to PUMPH you up
Is it me or are the Bengals picking all the players we thought the Eagles would end up selecting? Geeeez
They have the smallest scouting staff in the league. People often joke that they just read fan sites and draft those guys. This happens with them every year
sigh…there goes Marlon Mack
Maybe we trade for Jeremy Hil?
Or sign Charles. I’m not sweating this.
Maybe but I’m still hoping for Aaron Jones. Or Corey Clement.
I honestly forgot about Jones. I’d love to pick him up. I’m not really high on Clement
God no
I am also sick of this stupid monkey
Just follow along for some fun
https://twitter.com/BenjaminSolak/status/847550194535337984
That dude loves him some Donnel Pumphrey. He is stoked on his twitter page.
@CutsOnaNickel
theres goes my butt.
Shame… Would have been fun to Chant “Booty, Booty, booty, booty” during Eagles games
Scratch that.
https://twitter.com/OptimumScouting/status/858368286131712000
Mack just went to the Colts.
Yup
https://twitter.com/OptimumScouting/status/858382336399900672
With Kittle and Kazee gone, I want Aaron Jones or Corn Elder with this next pick.
Desmond king would be a value pick
Donnel Pumphrey spider graph. Hmmm.
https://www.mockdraftable.com/player/donnel-pumphrey
he’s like a knife.
So basically a young Dion Lewis, or will he be more of a quick slot WR here?
Dion Lewis has a much sturdier build.
Talking about how He will be used here? Scatback or more of a slot WR?
Daniel Jerremiah just said he thinks he will be a slot WR for us
Hope the Eagles trade back from our 5th
Yes!!!!! Thank you
Lets see how they can possibly follow up the freaking screaming JIm guy to read the pick
Udfa will be like a whole other draft later tonight haha.
CORN!!!!
I know.
Corn went up the Butt
F, really wanted Kazee or Corn… On well
trade?
No Corn No Pick
hahaha. You have to pick your own corn.
traded down with TEN
Trade… wonder what we got.
6th
6th comp, basically 7th
https://twitter.com/BrandonGowton/status/858387774050848768
ugh. A run on a players the Birds want seems to happen every year.
He’s just speculating. I’m sure Howie was dying to trade down to recoup that pick.
They are so afraid to trade up for some reason. Douglas effect?
Guess he’s got Howie on speed dial?
C O R N !
Nooooooooooooooooooo!
So 139 + 155 + 230 for 132 + 164 + 214?
huh?
We moved up and down and up. Kinda like sex. Butt different.
Getting all fancy with the back up at the end.
If we’re feeling really frisky we might move down again. It’ll be epic.
Got it. I’m doing 5 things at once right now. texts and calls and food…
What specifically was this most recent deal? We moved back to 164 and picked up 214?
Yes
Isiah Ford?
Omg forgot he was still there!!!!! Yes.
Please but Shelton Gibson is possible too. They had interest in him.
The Bucs should end up being a real fun team for HardKnocks This year which was much neded after last years Boring La Rams team. It was amazing how incredibly boring HardKnocks was last year, the highlight was an Ignorant donkey who didn’t believe Dinosaurs were real.
HardKnock needs to bounce back strong or it might be time to pull the plug on the show if it’s as bad as last season
Zamora — if we’re not getting mixon, f this guy too
Still wonder if the Eagles don’t trade for a veteran RB. Veteran RB FA available at this point are really slim pickings.
If not, it is likely a UFDA who competes for a job in camp and wins one.
or wait for cuts, etc
Maybe but I would expect they would be a bit more proactive than that.
Didinger has made some prescient calls on the Eagles. He had them taking Barnett a month ago because of their need for a young edge rusher and said they would look at Pumphrey as a possible replacement for Sproles in the 4th/5th round.
Diddy is pretty connected to the FO so not too surprising he’d have those insights.
Yeah but I don’t remember him nailing those kind of calls the past few years.
He said they would likely go defensive-heavy early on including addressing CB concerns early on.
Of all of the talking heads locally I heard who predicted what the Eagles might do, he knocked it out of the park and was eerily spot on. Pumphrey call was just a capper on some great predictions.
OK who do u guys want?
Christian McCaffrey, butt…
jake butt?
Butt Corn
What running backs are left?
dayes?
Ok we’re on clock
Think we traded back again.
Looks like to Miami. Guessing we dropped back two and picked up a 7
Two spots
ugh trade back to miami
Good. The more late round lottery picks the better. Don’t care about missing out on specific late round targets fans fall in love with based off the Fraction of info they are privy to that goes into making these decisions
Never mind. Had it wrong.
Howie made a deal with Douglas to be allowed to run the 5th round on his own, and he is putting his elite firstpick.com skills to work trading back to acquire all the 7th round picks (i managed to get 38 7ths once)
Never understood his fascination with acquiring so many 7th round picks.
There is nothing to suggest on all of the analyses I have seen that they are fundamentally different than UFDA especially from mid-7th round & on.
UFDA’s you have no control about where they sign… 7th round pick you control their destiny.
miami takes asiata with our pick
Good thing DF3B is gone
d3fb is never gone. he’ll be back with a vengeance.
It’s silly to get upset about. Obviously they knew who the Dolphins were taking and wouldn’t have made the trade if that’s who they wanted.
Joe Douglas is a steaming pile of fuckboi
Trust the process. Apparently they will protect a lead by scoring more. Worked great for the Falcons in the SB.
https://twitter.com/TDavenport_NFL/status/858393789727113219
Interesting. moved back 2 in the 5th moved up 10 in the 7th.
6th?
Ah you’re right. That makes it better.
So we didn’t gain an extra pick?
We moved 2 to move up 10 that’s fine.
Boooooo want extra lottery Tix, trade back again lol
on the clock again
im praying for another trade.
Same
they picked
Boooo lol
Shelton Gibson
Shelton Gibson
Why? Asiata would have been better value
No room .They wanted a deep receiver/ kick returner.
I got one right kinda
You had Hollins on your watch list yesterday too.
Another WR? Training camp is gonna be a blood bath competition amongst yoûng WR. Agholar and DGB’s agents better get to work now just in case
They’re on notice
Kick returner too. poor mans desean. avg 32 yards had one for td this year. Hollins & Gibson should make it with STs. He’s been compared to Tavon Austin but he’s not quite as fast.
will DGB and Agholor both make it to training camp?
Probably since its not like they have any trade value
Was Gipson hurt when he ran the 40? Hes touted as a speed demon but only ran 4.5.
Ran 4.39 at pro day. Article said something about it being miscalculated at combine
Cool why did he fall so far?
Just saw that. Thank you
I love the Gibson pick. He reminds me of a guy the Steelers would take and would use his speed as a mismatch. He’s really improved his hands over the last 2 seasons. He has the potential to be a low volume, but high impact guy on the outside.
Jeffrey / Smith / Matthews / Agholor / Hollins / Gibson huh
one of those is not long for that world.
You forgot Marshall!!!!
And Treggs.
And Bailey.
And Watford.
Two new guys can help STs.
We should trade JMatt for a 2018 4th
yup………….
and get Barbre, Kelce, and Kendricks traded for 2018 while we’re at it. i’m not trying to hear a SINGLE F-ING WORD FROM ANYBODY about having to cut those guys rather than getting compensation.
I like the additions of the WRs today. Seem to have some excess players there now; Howie needs to get his butt in gear on some trades. I’m not trying to hear about any cuts of NFL players as we need to get some extra 2018 draft assets back.
I would still try trading for a veteran CB.
And get on the phone to Jamaal Charles’ agent please. Thanks.
Jason McCourty is a FA. Might go to N.E. to join his bro. They need to free space to sign picks I think but maybe they have something up their sleeve.
My sources inside Novacare say look out for a blockbuster deal to move Paul Turner for a PACKAGE of future picks.
Tooth picks, yeah?
Better than a cut.
Apparently Big Bill B is trading the 2020-2025 1st round picks for Paul Turner as they attempt to get the final piece they need for a Super Bowl run. Its tough to give up on an obvious 1st ballot HOF player like Turner, but 6 1st round picks are too good to pass up.
I’m willing to take conditional on making a roster or practice squad 2018 7th. The scraps from the lord’s table should be an honor for any other team to receive.
I want a 4th in 2023 to sweeten the pot.
Gibson it is. Ran a 4.39 on his pro day and killed it in the shuttle. Best time at the combine.
I’m still higher on Agholor than Matthews
??
How is that possible? I can’t stand Matthews because he is so unreliable, but Ags is such a loser. I can’t wait for Ags to be cut. I’m ok with Matthews finishing out his rookie deal.
If Agholor can put it together he can at least create separation. The tools are there.
They both have terrible hands. JMatt has size, but that’s really it.
Agholor, by virtue of his contract, is here for 2017. Matthews, by virtue of HORRIBLE contracts given out to people like Marvin Jones, is due for $8 mil / year on the open market after this season.
Time to get something for Matthews other than a possible 2019 comp pick.
Eagles offense gonna look so different next year. Added some fun players.
And anybody on the current roster who took a lot of snaps last year who will be gone had damn well better be moved for some draft picks.
If we’re still looking at RBs to add, I’d love to see us get DeAngelo Henderson from Coastal Carolina in round 6.
http://www.nfl.com/draft/2017/profiles/deangelo-henderson?id=2557850
Aaron Jones?
Just looked him up. I’d be cool with him.
As long as he’s smaller than every one of our wideouts.
He’s a very sturdy 210 as he’s only 5’7″
https://twitter.com/MikeShemesh/status/858401993555095552
Not a lot of TEs left.
I really like Coke Hikituni. The eagles showed interest in Blake Jarwin. If they want a TE to groom, those may be 2 of the few options left.
F-ing Washington getting Sprinkle irked me.
Jeremiah said he thinks Pumphrey will be a slot guy. Has Howie commented on him yet? I find that hard to believe.
Nope – imagine it will happen after their last pick.
So why the F aren’t I seeing the Jordan Matthews for a 2018 4th that can become a 3rd trade?
No rush. This year’s draft is still happening.
Fyi…
ALL RUSH! I need all accounts closed for fear of losing assets for zero compensation.
Enough red bulls for you. Switch to bourbon. It’s time.
why not Four Loko?
Because I don’t want you to not make it to next year – where would we go for mocks?
ha ha ha ha ha ha ha.
Eagles have so many free agents next year, and such limited cap that i am sure they are going to try and play the comp pick game for the first time in forever in 2018. Issue is we don’t get picks until 2019 but even if Matthews walks in FA we will probably be getting a 4th round comp pick
“Issue is we don’t get picks until 2019”
Exactly; too much spec there.
honestly i’d err on the side of more weapons for carson than an extra 4th next year
I hear you on that front, but I think the best weapon for Carson is Lane saying no to drugs and Warmack / Seumalo starting over Barbre Doll and Kelce the Dwarf. I need the assets.
its all about the ass…ets.
Guilty as charged.
Dont draft 5th round picks assuming they will start day 1
But we absolutely cannot risk losing people for nothing.
Considering jordan mathews is currently our best young WR and he publically stated that he doesn’t even Believe in WR’s making crazy money, I wouldn’t assume he isn’t in our future plans just yet
..
Btw, worst case scenario He walks and adds to compensatory pick formula
I’m not waiting until 2019. I need clarity………yesterday.
I don’t even think the Eagles know yet dude, growth rate plays a role in who we invest in Longterm
.
I also don’t think its a terrible idea to see how a young WR looks playing with the same Qb two years(even more so when he played with a rookie QB last year) in a row before we pull the plug, especially when it was also his first time in a west coast offense that was probably more complicated than chips simplified offense
..
Also wouldn’t mind seeing how Jordan looks now that we actually have weapons around him that command the respect of opposing defenses
That’s certainly fair, but it doesn’t give me any guarantees that he signs for well below market.
How many Guarentees do you really get in the NFL, a sport where you can shred your knee and lose your career stepping the wrong way on the practice field… How much guarenttee is there really in a draft that is a little more than educated crap shoot? Heck you can’t even Guarentees that quality star veteran Free agent will transition to your team and be the same player he was on his old team.
..
Not much Guarentee in this NFL world.
.
we are talking about a kid, Jordan Mathews who was friggin happy that Macus smith got picked in Round one instead of him because Marcus family needed 1st round money more, I wouldn’t worry too much about Jordan Mathews being eager to price his way out of philly
.
Hard working kids tend to eventually Develope
I want one more than anyone else gets.
I definitely see Jordan Matthews leaving a couple million dollars on the table to stay an Eagle (paying Philly and PA taxes) . . .
Find it easier to believe that 175lb player will line up in the slot than in the backfield, tho we likely see a little bit of both
But why not just draft Chad Hansen if you want a slot WR. He’d have a lot of work to do on his route running. Could be a poor man’s Curtis Samuel I guess.
Im just finding out about Pumphrey, and I have no idea who Chad Henson is… Asking the wrong person
Pump is a lot of fun to watch.
Sounds like he had a ton of explosive big play ablity with the vision to match from what I read
trent taylor was a good pick
Yeah, interesting talent for sure.
When I see rasul Douglas name i keep seeing it as ras al ghul
Yep. Maybe he will lead a team of assassins
Hopefully he assassinates the careers of Odell, Dez, and Pryor.
our pick coming up again. Targets?
Matt Dayes?
Cole Hikutini
Shalom Luani
Elijah Qualls
Matt Dayes
Looking for MEDIA MIKE —
“Kelce the Dwarf” . . . fantastic image
Thank you!
Lorenzo Jerome S, Elijah Qualls DT (Beau type), Marquez White CB, Ashton Lampkin CB , Matt Dayes RB, Elijah Hood RB, Jalen Myrick CB are on the board.
Did that guard from UTEP go yet? I know the Eagles shoes some heavy interest in him.
It’s not UTEP actually. I can’t remember the guys nane
Tim Hardaway is a f-ing punk who can f himself for talking smack on Iverson the other day. He’s a complete a-hole who I hope gets hit in the f-ing head with a brick and dies a slow drooling death.
It was Ethan Coope from IUP. He could be a target
Please Please Please Aaron Jones.
Please address all death threats to Green Bay. I’m sorry we didn’t get your boy.
OUCH
Didn’t realize our pick is a 5th, last in round
Howie getting big value!
should be on the clock soon
Can NFL Network shut up jack off O’Hara and get to people discussing / broadcasting the Eagles pick announcement?
on the clock i believe.
Somebody tell NFL Network that and get their dumb adds off of my TV.
pick made
But we got to watch an add with the d bag from Silicon Valley instead. #blessed
what happened to the PE.com broadcast?
Nathan Gerry
Safety Nebraska
Nathan Gerry S
Nathan Gerry? Is that a joke with Golden and the Saint Francis kid on the board still? That’s as stupid as Blake Countess last year.
well that was exciting..,………..
Safety. So we got a DE, 2 corners and a safety now. About what we expected.
I figured this would be a defense heavy draft. I’m just surprised there hasn’t been a RB picked yet.
They took a small back Pumphrey.
I don’t really count him. I”m assuming he’s more of a gadget/mismatch type player.
Nope he is being converted to LB the Eagles announce. Makes sense at 220lb and 6ft2, with enough frame to put on the extra 15-20lbs to be an WLB
Works for me, I was hoping we would come out of the draft with a LB. Always wanted one of those Safety/LB hybrids
There were better WILs out there still. This is as stupid as Countess was. UDFA player.
Excellent, he’s an instinctive hitter.
That makes me feel way better about the pick
We still have #214
Apparently hes going to be a LB for the Eagles.
…at 209 pounds?
I have him at 218
Still light. I’m assuming he’s our “got a hang nail so we IR’d him” candidate.
True. Bad pick. He was a UDFA that wouldn’t have required any draft capital to add.
bring on the bacon
That makes sense, he looked pretty tight hipped at the combine, reaaally Tight like REALLY tight. But Seems like a dude that loves contact and will be best around the box
I’d like one of these DT loads. Elijah Qualls or Stevie T.
Stevie would be great.
UDFA level safety; dumb, dumb, dumb.
This guy looks like Sean Considne’s even more traumatically brain injured cousin.
Wait this Brantly dude knocked out a woman like a week or two before the draft? A defensive tackle hitting a woman at that? And what Mixon did years ago was the big story because it was on video? How do you even justify spending a 6th on this idiot?
i dunno, kind of an underwhelming draft overall. but i guess thats what happens when amateurs like me try to watch/project the draft. gotta trust the eagles to know what they’re doing
I honestly prefer the cowboys draft and they picked way after us in most rounds.
Easy to have a good draft on paper when you are willing to draft any scumbag in the name of talent
What scumbag did they draft?
3rd rd corner no?
I get the feeling it’s similar to the Conley situation. His girl got mad and decided to try and ruin his life.
I loved the first 3 picks. Love Gibson in the 5th. I don’t love unproductive elite tool WR’s generally as NFL prospects so not a fan of Hollins as much. Pumphrey is a fun college players but has big questions about his transition to the NFL. Gibson seems someone you can get later in the draft honestly.
Gibson probably went a little later than I thought. I would have been fine with him at 118
I’m actually pretty happy with the first 4 picks. Later picks tend to be crapshoot anyhow, so I’m good with whatever the Eagles think might work out.
I stand corrected, linebacker. I guess that makes more sense.
Elijah Lee would have been a better pick.
“Caleb Brantly saw the terrible reaction to Joe MIxon and was still stupid enough to do this two weeks before the draft?”
.
That’s an extreme level of stupidity and lack of self control, I would want no parts of trusting that dude
Blimey!!
90.000 people will be watching Klitschko vs Joshua at the Wembley Stadion today.
And it’s on free TV in Germany. Yes!!!
Antonio Brown spider: https://www.mockdraftable.com/player/antonio-brown
Shelton Gibson spider: https://www.mockdraftable.com/player/shelton-gibson
Gibson to the pro-bowl confirmed.
He has big time upside. I wanted him in round 4. I didn’t think he would last that long. He won’t be a high volume guy like Brown, but could be a Mike Wallace type deep threat.
New thread up
Mack Holins = Riley Cooper.
… and this isn’t necessarily a bad thing. They appear to bring similar skills (along with the size).
As for Pumphrey …
One has to figure that he’s been doubted and written off routinely in his career. But all he does is show up and set rushing records against quality opposition. He may not be as easy to dismiss as might be imagined …
