Posted July 10th, 2023 | 7 Comments »We’re in the middle of baseball season and my Orioles have the third best record in baseball. They’ve been a lot of fun to watch this year. One of the best parts is that they have so much homegrown talent. You have a chance for sustained success when you draft and develop your key players.
The Eagles won the Super Bowl in 2017, but weren’t able to stay at that level. I think one of the reasons is that team was cobbled together for that one season. There was a strong core of players, but also a lot of guys brought in as band-aids. They proved to be key players for the SB team.
RB LeGarrette Blount – 1-year deal
RB Jay Ajayi – in-season trade
WR Torrey Smith – 1-year deal
CB Patrick Robinson – 1-year deal
DE Chris Long – 1-year deal
CB Corey Graham – 1-year deal
Mix in Nick Foles playing out of his mind in the playoffs, Corey Clement playing his best game in the Super Bowl and some other tough to replicate performances and you can see why the Eagles weren’t able to keep playing at a high level. Forget postseason success, the 2017 team won 13 regular season games. The team only won 22 games over the next three seasons combined.
The Eagles lost some key players from last year’s team, but this feels different. The Eagles have drafted better in recent years and the coaches have done a better job of developing players. There seems to be more of a sense of continuity.
Isaac Seumalo is gone. Tyler Steen and Cam Jurgens will battle for his job. Javon Hargrave is gone. Milton Williams and Jalen Carter will battle for his job. TJ Edwards is gone. Nakobe Dean is ready to take over for him.
We’ll have to wait and see this team in action to get a better feel for what they can do, but it sure feels like they are in better position to sustain success than the 2017 team.

That’s what a MLB should look like. Tape all over his hands/arms. The perfect facemask. I even love Bill Bergey wearing #66. That just looks right.
He was 6-4, 243 and made the Pro Bowl four times as an Eagle. Stud
If Nakobe Dean has anywhere close to as good a career at Bergey did, we’ll all be very happy.

This will be heresy to some. A lot of people will make Brian Dawkins the one guy they have to get. I love Dawk to death, but give me stud DL over a stud safety. Vincent was an elite corner so getting him down there is a no-brainer. William Thomas is a wildly underrated NFL player. He finished his career with 37 sacks, 27 INTs and 10 FF. He was a playmaking LB with outstanding cover skills. The fact he had 7 INTs in 1995 is mind-blowing. Fred Warner is the best off-ball LB in the league right now. He’s got 4 picks in five years.
As for Mikell, he was a solid, steady player who was part of some good defenses. I think he’d do pretty well behind Reggie, Jerome and Willie…and with Troy on the outside.

Ike Reese shouldn’t be on the list. He was a terrific STer and role player, but he wasn’t a star LB. Put Carlos Emmons or Nigel Bradham up there. You could go with Jordan Hicks.
Ike was a key part of some good teams, but only started five games. His impact came outside of being just a LB.
I assume Derek Landri was left off this because he was $6 and no other players fit that category.
