Not So Fast

Last time out I wrote about DeSean Jackson and his retirement. I thought it was a pretty good piece, but there was one small problem.

Oy.

DeSean says he’s not retiring. That makes me wonder if his previous post was a fishing expedition to draw attention. If so, that worked with me and plenty of others. DeSean isn’t signed by anyone and may want to play. One way to get your name out there is to create some “news” and then announce to the world you’re not retiring.

DeSean is 36 years old. He’s caught 52 passes over the past four seasons. Injuries have been the issue, not a lack of speed. DeSean can still run. I just don’t know if anyone will sign him this summer. His best bet would be waiting for a team to have an injury issue. A contender might be willing to take a chance in that situation.

We’ll see what happens.

Ringo will focus on learning and developing this year. He’s got great potential, but needs plenty of work.

Luckily, the Eagles have a good group of CBs. They should be able to let Ringo develop slowly if needed.

I saw this and did a bit of a double-take.

How could Hurts numbers be so similar to Taylor, a QB who was solid at his very best.

As with all stats, you need to go inside the numbers. The person who put this together mixed in Hurts rookie year, when he started just 4 games. There’s also the fact that was his rookie season. Taylor’s 3-year period was years 5-7, the peak of his career.

If you just focus on their best two seasons, Hurts blows Taylor out of the water. Give Ernie or whoever put this together some credit for finding a way to spin numbers creatively, but the truth isn’t as much fun for them.

The exciting part about Hurts is that he’s just beginning his journey. He’s started 34 games in the NFL. With his drive, a creative offense and plenty of talent around him, the future is very bright. It will be interesting to see just how good Hurts is when he starts to peak in a few years.

Great point here from Zach.

It is fair to ask how the move from Shane Steichen to Brian Johnson will affect the Eagles. But you also need to understand that Johnson is a highly thought of coach. Steichen did a great job over the past two seasons. Johnson has the potential do a great job as well. He’s been a QB coach in college and the NFL. He was instrumental in the development of Hurts.

Johnson was an offensive coordinator at Utah, Houston and Florida. He’s called plays. He’s built gameplans. He’ll have the support of Jeff Stoutland with the run game as well as Nick Sirianni and Kevin Patullo with the passing game.

Risk always comes with change. Johnson has the experience and skills to succeed so this isn’t a casual promotion or a shot in the dark.

It is amazing to see the beating that QBs used to take.
