Game Preview – NYG at PHI
Posted December 24th, 2023 | 6 Comments »Stop me if you’ve heard this before. The Eagles are desperate for a win so they can end their losing streak and shift the focus from everything that has gone wrong to the fact they’re in first place in the NFC East.
The Eagles out-played Seattle for most of the game last week, but didn’t put enough distance on the scoreboard. That allowed the Seahawks to steal the game at the end. The Eagles need to keep that in mind as they play the Giants. Controlling the game is good, but they must score points and take away any hope from the G-men.
The Giants are only 5-9, but they were 2-8 so the team is playing their best football of the year. In a way, they are the reverse Eagles. The Giants started winning when they hit the soft part of their schedule. Tommy DeVito is 3-2 as the starting QB and has brought some energy to the team. Giants fans want him to be the next Brock Purdy or Kurt Warner. He’s more likely the flavor of the month.
DeVito has good mobility and that’s something the Eagles will have to deal with. He is willing to take chances and give his guys a chance to make plays. He only has 3 INTs so he aggressive without being careless. He has been sacked 35 times. Some of that is the OL, some is him holding the ball.
This is a game where the Eagles DL must make plays. The Giants have struggled with pass pro all year long. The Eagles must get to DeVito multiple times in this game. They need to pressure and hit him so he’s not comfortable. The Giants are 31st in yards and points. That offense can struggle, but you don’t want to take that for granted. And the Eagles defense has had their issues. Win up front and you’ll win the game.
Rookie WR Jalin Hyatt does give the Giants a legit deep threat. He averages 18 yards per reception. You can bet they’ll throw to him. Wan’Dale Robinson is more of a chain-mover. He leads the team with 46 receptions. TE Darren Waller is healthy and will be a tough matchup in the middle of the field.
The defense will be missing Darius Slay and Zach Cunningham. Avonte Maddox practiced this week, but he isn’t ready to play today. LB Nick Morrow is questionable. If he is out, the Eagles would have Shaq Leonard and Ben VanSumeren as the LBs. Dealing with Saquon Barkley isn’t easy on a good day. He will be a major challenge for the Eagles backup LBs.
Matt Patricia used a lot of 3-safety sets last week. That will likely happen again.
The Eagles offense ran for 178 yards last week. They need to do that again this week. The Giants are 29th in the league in run defense. This is a group you can run on. The Eagles will have a shuffled OL. Cam Jurgens will be back at RG, but Landon Dickerson is out this week. Sua Opeta will shift over to LG. That line should still be able to open holes for D’Andre Swift and other Eagles runners. Boston Scott is ready for his annual big game against the Giants.
Jalen Hurts needs a bounce-back game. The biggest thing for him will be protecting the ball. If he can avoid turnovers, the Eagles should be able to move the ball and score points. They do have 13 INTs this year so the DBs can make plays on the ball.
The Giants love to blitz. The Eagles must communicate well and pick up the blitzers. The Giants only have 24 sacks all year. Kayvon Thibodeaux has almost half, with 11.5 of them. He could be a tough matchup for Jordan Mailata.
The Eagles are a much better team and should win this game. But that isn’t a lock. The Eagles must come out and play good football. They need to make play and avoid mistakes. That hasn’t happened in recent weeks and that’s how you have a 3-game losing streak. The Giants give them a great opportunity to get back to winning, but the schedule lightening up only helps if the Eagles take advantage of it.
Make plays.
Be smart.
Win.
That’s a simple formula for Nick Sirianni and his guys. Go win this game and give Eagles fans the gift they deserve.
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to everyone!

Speaking of Christmas, Peyton Manning did a bit on Philly and Santa. Pretty funny.
Throwing snowballs at Eagles fans in the City of Brotherly Love has to be up there on Peyton, @RickyWatters and Matt Millen's bucket lists. pic.twitter.com/W289MaBM2p
