The Eagles traded for a Pro Bowl cornerback on Saturday. The Eagles traded for a washed up corner who only played two games while he was part of one of the worst defenses in the league this year. Both statements are true and refer to the same player.

Let’s take a look at what the Eagles actually got. Forget about the Pro Bowls. Those came in 2020 and 2022. Injuries have limited Alexander to 16 games over the past 2.5 seasons. He’s not the player he once was. The guy who had 14 PDs and 5 INTs in 2022 is long gone. Alexander struggled to get on the field in Baltimore this year for a defense that has struggled all year long.

Why would the Eagles deal for this guy?

The cost was low. And they get a veteran corner who has played well in the past. While he’s not getting back to his 2022 level, there is hope that he can be a functional veteran CB. Eagles DB coach Christian Parker worked with Alexander in Green Bay in 2019 and 2020. Parker might know how best to use Alexander to get the most out of him. The Eagles must feel that Alexander can be an effective player in their scheme and with good coaching.

Some fans on Twitter said “He’s got to be better than those bums Adoree Jackson and Kelee Ringo!” No, he’s not, based on what we’ve seen this year. Alexander only played two games for the Ravens and struggled in those games. Ringo is coming off his best game of the year in the win over the Giants. Jackson was awful this summer, but he’s steadily improved over the course of the season. Neither guy has played as hoped or the Eagles wouldn’t be making this move. But understand that Alexander would have to beat them out to start and there is no guarantee that happens. The first order of business is for Alexander to learn the defense and show what he can do in practice.

I think you should look at Alexander as a depth move. The Eagles traded for Michael Carter the other day to have better depth at nickel. Alexander gives them better depth outside. Both players are veterans, the kind of guys you might need in January.

The Eagles now have a glut of corners.

They also have Jakorian Bennett who will need to be activated. Can they keep all those guys? Putting Epps on IR leaves them thin at safety. It will be interesting to see what the Eagles do. They don’t play a game until a week from Monday so they have time to figure out the best course of action.

What this does tell you is that good CBs weren’t available, at least not at a reasonable price. Howie would have loved to add a plug ‘n play CB who could come in and stabilize his side of the field. I guess that guy wasn’t on the market.

Howie could still have moves to make at other spots.

I don’t know much about Wolfe and how good of a source/reporter he is. That info feels like something from Miami to try and generate a market for one of the players they would like to trade. Fangio might like Phillips, but it just has more of a Miami vibe than something coming from a Philly source. We’ll find out soon enough.

Phillips is an active, athletic, disruptive rusher. The big issue with him is reliability. Injuries have slowed him down in college and the pros. He would be interesting…at the right price.
