Day 2 Discussion Thread

Posted: April 29th, 2011 | Author: | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 361 Comments »

Eagles have a pick in the 2nd and 3rd.

There aren’t any guys I’m dead set on.  I hope we lean defense, but if the plan is to add veteran defenders in free agency and/or trades…you can just play the board and take the best players.  It would be interesting to see if Andy goes for a guy like RB Taiwan Jones in the 2nd.  Or do we go conventional and get a defender.

My preference is to get a CB or S Marcus Gilchrist.  I wojuldn’t complain if we moved up for CB Ras-I Dowling either.  We’ll see what happens.  Should be a fun day.

I *think* the second round will focus on defense. CB (Williams, Dowling, Harris?) or LB (Bruce Carter?) would be great, IMO.

Yeah, this is a weird day 2, there’s nobody here that I’m in love with at all.

    Dowling is gone. 🙁

  5. 5 Philanova said at 6:11 PM on April 29th, 2011:

    Hate those Pats.

  6. 6 Kammich said at 6:12 PM on April 29th, 2011:

man, really really wanted Dowling to fall within range for us. damn.

  7. 7 Philanova said at 6:13 PM on April 29th, 2011:

I wonder if the Eagles were actually looking to move up for Dowling? Maybe it’s Williams and they’ll keep working with these teams for an early pick today.

  8. 8 MannaFromKevin said at 6:13 PM on April 29th, 2011:

    The Patriots are so frustrating.

  9. 9 Tommy Lawlor said at 6:15 PM on April 29th, 2011:

The Pats spend a ton of picks at DB and get mediocre results.

  10. 10 Hellavoxx said at 6:15 PM on April 29th, 2011:

Seems to me this would make us a major player in the Nnamdi sweepstakes. If they get him, and they get Ayers and the RB Jones in the draft, this offseason is a success in my book.

  11. 11 The Reddgie said at 6:16 PM on April 29th, 2011:

I am rooting for Bruce Carter. He has the prerequisite knee injury, he is an athletic beast, he is a mean tackler.

Plus, I like the possible LB firm of Chaney, Bradley and Carter. Nice ring to it.

  12. 12 Philanova said at 6:16 PM on April 29th, 2011:

    Run on CBs…

  13. 13 Eric said at 6:16 PM on April 29th, 2011:

The Eagles will be out of play for any starting quality corners. Harris will go pretty quickly too.

  14. 14 Kammich said at 6:17 PM on April 29th, 2011:

I guess we’re gonna see a run on Corners. bad news for the Birds.

guess we’re gonna need to get ready to back up the Brinks truck to Asomugha’s house.

  15. 15 Philanova said at 6:17 PM on April 29th, 2011:

Hey Tommy – Is Rahim Moore strictly an FS, or would he offer anything as an SS?

  16. 16 Tommy Lawlor said at 6:19 PM on April 29th, 2011:

I approve of Andy Dalton’s girlfriend.

  17. 17 Philanova said at 6:19 PM on April 29th, 2011:

    God, Dalton’s gf is STACKED.

  18. 18 Tommy Lawlor said at 6:19 PM on April 29th, 2011:

    RE: Rahim Moore

Pure FS in my mind. Sloppy tackler. Not physical.

    Get Marcus Gilchrist for SS.

  19. 19 Tommy Lawlor said at 6:21 PM on April 29th, 2011:

    RE: drafting a CB

I’d love to get a CB in the 2nd or 3rd as a player for the future. I still want a veteran CB acquired.

  20. 20 Eric said at 6:21 PM on April 29th, 2011:

Haha. Always love the eye candy.

  21. 21 Philanova said at 6:26 PM on April 29th, 2011:

One less team in the Kolb Sweepstakes.

  22. 22 MannaFromKevin said at 6:26 PM on April 29th, 2011:

Take the 49ers out of the Kolb sweepstakes.

Ugh. By the time this draft is over I wonder if there will be enough competition for Kolb to even get a 1st for him.

  23. 23 Tommy Lawlor said at 6:26 PM on April 29th, 2011:

What is up with SF letting a couple of young hot chicks in their war room? That’s fantasy material for me.

Interesting pick of Kaepernick to SF. Harbaugh was great with Josh Johnson at San Diego, another athletic runner/passer.

  24. 24 LeicesterEagles73 said at 6:26 PM on April 29th, 2011:

What are the chances of Harris making it to the Eagles? or do we think he is worth moving up for?

Eye candy in the 49ers war room as well!

  25. 25 Tommy Lawlor said at 6:27 PM on April 29th, 2011:

I never bought SF as Kolb target. Jim wants Alex Smith to stick around for now. He wants to develop his own QB for the future.

  26. 26 Tommy Lawlor said at 6:28 PM on April 29th, 2011:

    RE: Brandon Harris?

I would not pay a steep price to move up for him. I’m still not convinced he’s an ideal starting CB for us.

  27. 27 Adam S. said at 6:29 PM on April 29th, 2011:

So when is somebody going to make a video montage of all the draft eye candy? I missed AJ Green’s GF yesterday and the SF war room just now.

  28. 28 MannaFromKevin said at 6:30 PM on April 29th, 2011:

    @Tommy:

    RE: cornerbacks

Anyone left that you think could be a starting CB for us? Or any favorites still out there?

  29. 29 Eric said at 6:31 PM on April 29th, 2011:

    Adam,

Probably the brief eye candy enjoyment for me the last 2 days has been Dalton’s gf.

It was like my eyes were being sucked into a black hole.

  30. 30 MannaFromKevin said at 6:32 PM on April 29th, 2011:

    @Adam S:

Haha I was scouring the Internet today for a pic of AJ Green’s girlfriend at the draft. I missed her too and I want to see her “painted on dress” that goes “all the way down to her hips”.

  31. 31 Tommy Lawlor said at 6:32 PM on April 29th, 2011:

Glad to see ARZ go with RB. Trade partner.

  32. 32 Eric said at 6:32 PM on April 29th, 2011:

Wow, Cardinals already admitting Beanie was a big mistake.

  33. 33 Tommy Lawlor said at 6:34 PM on April 29th, 2011:

Beanie and Ryan Williams could be a really good combo. Think of CAR with Stewart and Williams.

  34. 34 Kammich said at 6:35 PM on April 29th, 2011:

Ryan Williams was the top-ranked offensive prospect left on my board. Not sure how much of a NEED it addresses for Arizona, but I like the pick based on value alone. He has the potential to be an elite runner.

  35. 35 John C said at 6:35 PM on April 29th, 2011:

Still not a good start here for us. Let’s hope the Birds figure out how to get some impact players on defense. Starting to not like this draft too much.

  36. 36 Adam S. said at 6:38 PM on April 29th, 2011:

LOL my problem is I’m watching on my laptop so I have to switch back and forth between tabs so i miss a lot of the GF’s….I did see Dalton’s though. I actually noticed her yesterday when they showed a quick clip of him at home. Made sure I was around when his name was called again.

Is there away to login to this site Tommy? kinda annoying to have to fill in the stuff for each reply

  37. 37 Philanova said at 6:39 PM on April 29th, 2011:

Mort saying Ayers to Tennessee here.

  38. 38 Philanova said at 6:40 PM on April 29th, 2011:

    THE FREAK.

  39. 39 MannaFromKevin said at 6:40 PM on April 29th, 2011:

Okay I had DVR’d the NFLN version of the first round. I checked AJ Green’s selection. Am I missing something? Sure his girlfriend is hot but she’s very conservatively dressed. I read that her dress was so tight it was “painted on” and that it stopped at her hips. Looked more like a classy, conservative skirt suit, complete with jacket.

  40. 40 Philanova said at 6:42 PM on April 29th, 2011:

Shit. Bruce Carter to the ‘Boys.

  41. 41 ian no 2 said at 6:44 PM on April 29th, 2011:

AZ not picking a QB 1st or 2nd may have a Kolb angle

  42. 42 Eric said at 6:45 PM on April 29th, 2011:

Green’s gf didn’t do it for me. She had a nice body, but I don’t find darker women very attractive. I know that sounds racist, but I just don’t like their features.

  43. 43 TEW! said at 6:46 PM on April 29th, 2011:

    Damn I wanted Carter…

  44. 44 Philanova said at 6:46 PM on April 29th, 2011:

    Mallet to the ‘Skins here?

  45. 45 mcud said at 6:46 PM on April 29th, 2011:

Kerrigan to the Redskins. Prince to the Giants. Carter to the Cowboys. Aaron Williams gone. Dowling gone.

    I hate my life.

  46. 46 Adam S. said at 6:47 PM on April 29th, 2011:

    @ Eric….not racist, just preference.

Shit….damn cowboys actually drafting good, this is bullshit lol

  47. 47 Tommy Lawlor said at 6:47 PM on April 29th, 2011:

  48. 48 mcud said at 6:47 PM on April 29th, 2011:

    Dexter Manley wasn’t available?

  49. 49 John Scott said at 6:50 PM on April 29th, 2011:

Help me out here. Didn’t the Eagles get Washington’s 2nd and 4th round picks for this year’s draft? Why aren’t the Eagles picking at #40? What am I missing here?

  50. 50 Philanova said at 6:50 PM on April 29th, 2011:

What if Bowers falls within reach? Worth a small trade-up in the second?

  51. 51 Sjampen said at 6:50 PM on April 29th, 2011:

Tommy, do you think that Janoris Jenkins going to the supp. draft if that will happen is the reason why the birds doesnt seem to take an impact CB or do they just not like the prospects this year?

  52. 52 MannaFromKevin said at 6:51 PM on April 29th, 2011:

    @John Scott

I got mixed up too. We got their 2nd and 4th last year (Nate Allen in the 2nd). This year just their 4th.

  53. 53 Thunderlips said at 6:51 PM on April 29th, 2011:

Has the lockout helped any team more than the Skins? That 2nd round pick would have been burning a hole in their pocket.

  54. 54 Philanova said at 6:51 PM on April 29th, 2011:

@John Scott – We got their 2nd last year and a conditional pick this year, either their 3rd or 4th round pick.

  55. 55 Tommy Lawlor said at 6:51 PM on April 29th, 2011:

Eagles have WAS’s 4th rounder. We had their 2nd last year.

  56. 56 nicolajNN said at 6:51 PM on April 29th, 2011:

Non-draft. Temporary stay granted and lockout back on

  57. 57 -Triumph- said at 6:52 PM on April 29th, 2011:

  58. 58 Matt said at 6:52 PM on April 29th, 2011:

    2 rd was last year

  59. 59 Tommy Lawlor said at 6:52 PM on April 29th, 2011:

I don’t think Janoris Jenkins being in the Supp Draft affects our plans. We’ll go for vet CB. Might still add CB in the next couple of rounds.

  60. 60 Adam S. said at 6:52 PM on April 29th, 2011:

@ Tommy….I think there must be a way because the one guy up at the top has that logo (Temple??) next to his name. either way not a huge deal, just more convenient.

  61. 61 Kevin said at 6:53 PM on April 29th, 2011:

Who are Eagles targets at this point?

  62. 62 ATG said at 6:55 PM on April 29th, 2011:

“Who are Eagles targets at this point?”

    Andrew Luck?

  63. 63 John Scott said at 6:56 PM on April 29th, 2011:

Thanks, yes, time just has been flying by so quickly… wow, I just lost a year! hahahaha

  64. 64 Tommy Lawlor said at 6:56 PM on April 29th, 2011:

Eagles could add Wiz and it would make some sense. Watkins is the RG of the future. Wiz would be C of the future.

I’d prefer to go elsewhere, but that wouldn’t be a terrible move.

  65. 65 netherman said at 6:56 PM on April 29th, 2011:

  67. 67 mcud said at 6:58 PM on April 29th, 2011:

    @Philanova

I wouldnt touch Bowers until round 4, at the earliest. He’s Cornelius Ingram Redux. If you want a 1st round talent that has fallen, take Greg Romeus. At least he’s a year removed from his injury.

  68. 68 Kevin said at 6:59 PM on April 29th, 2011:

    My Targets

    – Bowers (if medical)
    – Martez Wilson
    – Mikel LeShore
    – Davon House

All things being equal, I want Wilson or House

  69. 69 mcud said at 6:59 PM on April 29th, 2011:

That said, I wouldnt take Romeus until round 4 either.

  70. 70 Tommy Lawlor said at 6:59 PM on April 29th, 2011:

  73. 73 Adam S. said at 7:02 PM on April 29th, 2011:

-Triumph- how’d you get the logo? were you able to login eerrrr what?

  74. 74 Kammich said at 7:03 PM on April 29th, 2011:

Nice pick for Detroit. Stretch the field with some DeSean-esque potential.

It was exact value on my board, too. #44 player overall at the #44 pick.

  75. 75 ATG said at 7:03 PM on April 29th, 2011:

I don’t know, Tommy, I think a pouring sugar-related comment would bring on hysteria.

  76. 76 mcud said at 7:03 PM on April 29th, 2011:

    Ahh Barry.

    Best I ever saw.

  77. 77 Kevin said at 7:03 PM on April 29th, 2011:

I don’t undertsand what Mayhew/Schwartz are doing in Detroit. I get Fairly. BPA. Was WR really the #1 need in Detroit?

  78. 78 Tommy Lawlor said at 7:05 PM on April 29th, 2011:

I’m happy to see Marvin Austin slide, but he better not be our pick.

  79. 79 TEW! said at 7:05 PM on April 29th, 2011:

  80. 80 Tommy Lawlor said at 7:05 PM on April 29th, 2011:

    @ ATG…

Now you’re on the list. My eyes are on you mister.

  81. 81 Philanova said at 7:06 PM on April 29th, 2011:

Anybody got a return specialist in mind? Seeing the highlight of Titus Young returning the kick made me think that we could use a player (CB? WR? RB?) who could take on the KR duties. I don’t think Desean’s PR talents should go unused, but perhaps a KR/PR could give him a brief respite.

  82. 82 Adam S. said at 7:06 PM on April 29th, 2011:

LOVE the reception for Barry! by far my favorite non-eagle player ever. I actually clapped myself….at work….in the middle of a mall….got some strange looks

  83. 83 Eric said at 7:07 PM on April 29th, 2011:

  84. 84 Adam S. said at 7:09 PM on April 29th, 2011:

  85. 85 mcud said at 7:10 PM on April 29th, 2011:

I’d like to throw a late rounder at San Fran for Ted Ginn. I’d like to have a dedicated KR/PR, and not lose much from DeSean.

  86. 86 Kammich said at 7:11 PM on April 29th, 2011:

Shaky Smithson is a good return specialist out of Utah. Wouldn’t mind expelling a later-round choice on him.

Mostly because his name is Shaky fucking Smithson.

  87. 87 ATG said at 7:13 PM on April 29th, 2011:

Don’t care for the value of the Franklin pick, there. Had him graded in the mid-late 3rd. #85 player on my board.

And seeing as Denver was once seriously looking at Bowers at #2 overall, and just passed on him with consecutive picks in the 2nd… is it fair to say that we’re going to see him drop into the 4th, 5th?

  193. 193 Kammich said at 7:58 PM on April 29th, 2011:

One of the worst value picks of the draft so far in Jarrett(-65). I like his intangibles and potential as a box safety down the road. I just don’t think it was a priority need, especially considering that Jarrett and Coleman are practically the same player.

  194. 194 Adam S. said at 7:58 PM on April 29th, 2011:

It almost seems like Andy can’t find anybody that wants to trade up when we are selecting so he is forced to reach for players he loves that could normally be had later.

my take on the guy from Temple… he was the last safety on the board that the Eagles had any interest in. And because of the lack of safeties available of quality, and the lack of anyone else who really stood out, they just went with the guy they think who can help.

@ Manna, the old guy is “Philly Billy” Werndl (pronounced ‘Wern-dell), he used to work for a scouting service (sorry, can’t remember who), I ran into him while I lived in So. Cal, I listened to him on XTRA Sports out of San Diego. I think he did that gig for a number of years, 10-12 or so, and now, well, I guess he’s back east, maybe he’s working another draft service again, not sure. Hope it helps.

Tremendous value pick for GB. I guess Jones will be gone via FA. Now they can commit Jordy Nelson to being the slot guy and have Cobb pick up all of his return/trickery duties.

  251. 251 mcud said at 8:41 PM on April 29th, 2011:

The Bruce Carter pick to the Cowboys puzzles me. They’ve already got relatively young OLBs in Ware and Spencer. Carter isn’t a great fit anyway.

Wonder Carter was a panic pick after both Dowling and Williams went off the board right before they picked. Also wonder if that makes Curtis Brown their choice here in a few minutes.

  341. 341 ian no 2 said at 10:02 PM on April 29th, 2011:

Marsh is a raw athlete who has played two years at CB. 4.4 speed, 6′, 37″ vertical leap. A lot of athletes like that can’t play the position, but what’s encouraging about him is that he actually played well against guys like Titus Young. He’s a developmental and not a guy who can step in next year.

  342. 342 Grimlock said at 10:03 PM on April 29th, 2011:

@Toast why would Big Red care about that? He is a mormon isn’t he.

  343. 343 mcud said at 10:04 PM on April 29th, 2011:

I don’t know how much you can expect from any rookie this year in terms of contribution. The lockout could last quite awhile, if the appeal holds up. No rookie camps, OTAs, maybe even mini-camps. Pretty essential for rooks to be there early and often to make an impact in year 1, especially guys taken after round 1.

Developmental kids and those with injuries might make more sense this year than they usually do…

  344. 344 Philanova said at 10:05 PM on April 29th, 2011:

Would anybody be upset if the Eagles selected another CB with pick #104 (the Redskins’ former pick, early 4th round)?

I like the Marsh pick, but considering the quantity of remaining picks the Eagles have (2 4’s, 2 5’s, 1 6, and 3 7’s), I wouldn’t mind them nabbing a second CB to try to make certain they address the position since they weren’t able to grab one of the higher pedigreed players.

  349. 349 ian no 2 said at 10:12 PM on April 29th, 2011:

Based on draft grades they’ve picked a 2nd and two 4ths, enough reaching to scrub down an elephant. But it matters what people think in a few years. Heckert seemed to have a better sense about where people would go. This draft seems to be the team locking in on guys that they know will be on the board without having to think much about other teams.

  350. 350 mcud said at 10:18 PM on April 29th, 2011:

Yeah, I’m definitely calibrated to the Tom Heckert “Know your Enemy” type of drafting style; i.e. good guesses as to when the player you want will be taken, so you can swoop in and steal him.

Howie seems to be of the Bill Polian school of “I Know What I Want, so F You if you don’t agree” thought.

I miss Tom. I’ll get used to Howie I guess.

  351. 351 MannaFromKevin said at 10:19 PM on April 29th, 2011:

    @ian no 2

This draft is unique because not a single team satisfied any of its needs via free agency. So suddenly they have to worry about addressing more positions than usual. So they have to reach to make sure they get the guys they want because if they miss on a position in the draft there’s no guarantee they satisfy it in free agency. It’s crazy but I can see why and the Eagles aren’t the only ones making crazy, reach picks.

Some of you guys are basing value on where media people that dont work in the NFL think they will go. If you read in your sporting news draft guide that someone is a first rounder and every team passes on him twice and he lasts to the third round, HE DIDNT DROP!!! That means that NFL front offices always had him rated as a third rounder.

    @mcud

I really don’t think this is a Howie vs. Heckert type of change. Look at last year’s draft. You didn’t see this last year so much. I think it’s a product of the environment and the Eagles are not the only ones reacting in this way. It’s a whole new animal and teams have to adapt. Adapt or risk making critical mistakes. You’ve seen the crazy spot teams are taking players. Carpenter in the first? Locker 8th? I mean, there might have been a few teams that coveted Carptender or Locker and were waiting until later to take them. All of a sudden, they’re gone! All bets are off, man. You can’t ASSUME that anyone will be available in the round you expect them to be. You’ve gotta be bold or miss your shot.

to clarify, my previous post was in reference to the lockout and no CBA and no free agency and no trades, etc., before the draft

HP, Do you know any football people who thought Jaiquawn Jarrett was coming off the board soon?

    Good post MFK.

I’ve already heard there was a feeling among some NFL scouts that JJ was a reach at 54. The point is that this is a player the Eagles really locked onto and didn’t want to risk losing.

I hope they made a wise choice.

It isn’t a horrible choice, but the value angle is weird.

Popping in Utah State game to study. I’ll post notes tomorrow.

MFK, Good observation but Locker and Carpenter are bad picks. I wouldn’t hold up the current Seahawks and the Titans as models of how to run an organization. The Giants and the Patriots pick value under any circumstance. I prefer rooting for a smart team to rooting for a team that fills holes defensively like a perennial fantasy league runner up.

If you want to save a few bucks by dumping Mikell, take the risk that Coleman, one of your young backups, or a free agent will step up rather than take a 4th rounder in the 2nd. And there’s what I call the “Te’o Syndrome” where you are smitten with a guy who is graded for the late round because scout’s assessment of his abilities and college performance, and you absolutely have to have him and reach for them, despite the fact that 45 teams somehow found a way to win the Super Bowl without Te’o and Jarrett and none of them wore midnight green.

to make that more clear: “Te’o Syndrome” where you are smitten by the character or maturity of a guy the scouts graded for the late round because of his abilities and college performance, and you absolutely have to have him and reach for them
