    Go health go!

    And Eagles i guess

  2. 2 theguyotc said at 7:36 PM on August 25th, 2011:

I think the “stay healthy” should outnumber all other points by at least 2 to 1. That’s the proper paranoia ratio.

    Stay healthy.

    Tommy:
The commentators claimed that Vick sack was Watkins fault… Wasn’t it Kelce that let the guy by?

    Good start from the D

  5. 5 Tommy Lawlor said at 7:51 PM on August 25th, 2011:

2 weeks in a row my sister called as the game began. I watched the game, but wasn’t able to comment.

    Ugly start for the offens.e

2 blocked field goals. A shame they come now, but is it because of:

    – Luck?
    – Preseason alas timing is not completely down?
    – Talent?
    – April is a genius?
    – Other

Shady looks awesome. Get him out of there!

  8. 8 iskar36 said at 7:56 PM on August 25th, 2011:

I think the sack/fumble on the first drive really just a poorly executed screen pass. The oline needs to hold a little longer, but you want to invite the blitz and dump it over top of them.

  9. 9 DB said at 7:57 PM on August 25th, 2011:

    Offense looks offensive

  10. 10 BC said at 7:59 PM on August 25th, 2011:

What’s the over/under on Young and Kafka starts this year since these guys are going to be constantly getting mashed.

  11. 11 Damon said at 8:00 PM on August 25th, 2011:

O line not looking very sharp

  12. 12 deg0ey said at 8:01 PM on August 25th, 2011:

O struggling, but D has had a good show so far.

    Need to protect Vick better.

What’s the over/under on Young/Kafka starts this year since these guys are going to be getting mashed all year.

  14. 14 Tommy Lawlor said at 8:03 PM on August 25th, 2011:

What a bizarre start for the offense. OL play is terrible, until that run by Ronnie Brown.

Mudd needs to get these guys over in a huddle and work some things out.

  15. 15 PA_eagle said at 8:03 PM on August 25th, 2011:

Our O-Line looks like a sieve right now. Vick is getting laid out.

  16. 16 PK said at 8:03 PM on August 25th, 2011:

I Kelce having a good game on run blocking or am I seeing things? Seems really good in space…

  17. 17 GermanEagle said at 8:04 PM on August 25th, 2011:

The right side of our o line has been a mess so far. I really hope that Vick will come out of this game injury free…

  18. 18 JB said at 8:04 PM on August 25th, 2011:

Howard Mudd may be a great coach but Watkins and Dunlap couldn’t block a god damn thing that entire drive. Isn’t there a point where Vick tells the coaches that he refuses to play behind those two morons? He has been pancaked every play of first quarter, Tommy tell me you’re not REALLY concerned!

    GoEagles99 fan for life.

  19. 19 BC said at 8:04 PM on August 25th, 2011:

Sorry my posts weren’t showing up on the other browser I was on and when I switched I see it went up twice.

  20. 20 mattman said at 8:04 PM on August 25th, 2011:

I’ve seen enough to say that the Eagles will be crazy to actually give Kelce the starting job. They better just be resting up JJ to keep him healthy. Kelce is getting alternately fooled and physically destroyed on nearly every play.

  21. 21 Steag209 said at 8:04 PM on August 25th, 2011:

All I’m watching is the right side of our OL and it seems like they’re getting beat every play. I think I’ve counted 3 plays where all 3 of them have done their jobs, but the ST looks good

  22. 22 PK said at 8:05 PM on August 25th, 2011:

Kelce seems to be doing a good job with run blocking out in space…

  23. 23 JB said at 8:05 PM on August 25th, 2011:

Tommy Dunlap and Watkins look atrocious, how could they go into the season with THESE GUYS!? Tell me you aren’t REALLY concerned…

I’ve been having weird issues with the comment section myself. Earlier today, my posts never showed up, and right now, some posts from other posters don’t show up until much later.

  25. 25 BountyBowl said at 8:06 PM on August 25th, 2011:

So the _left_ side of the offensive line is competent.

The right side is going to get Vick killed. Or, more specifically, the rookies therein.

  26. 26 nicolajNN said at 8:14 PM on August 25th, 2011:

While the right side is bad, as Caplan pointed out they need to play, especially Watkins and Kelce. We need to see what we have in the, what mistakes they make and they can’t improve if they sit on the bench.

Defense looks markedly better than before. The LBs seem to look more comfortable. Putting Rolle in on Nickel might be helping Casey too

Having weird comment problems today too. Comments not showing up at times.

  31. 31 Tommy Lawlor said at 8:16 PM on August 25th, 2011:

The defense has looked pretty good. That’s encouraging.

The offense is ugly. Let’s see them improve in the 2nd Qtr.

  32. 32 Tommy Lawlor said at 8:17 PM on August 25th, 2011:

    Good pressure by Cullen Jenkins.

Jamar Chaney has stepped up tonight. He’s looking like a stud LB.

  33. 33 BC said at 8:17 PM on August 25th, 2011:

That’s how this defense is supposed to work. Pressure, then int.

  35. 35 DB said at 8:19 PM on August 25th, 2011:

That new MLB, #50, looks pretty good. Way better than the guy who played last week.

  36. 36 Steag209 said at 8:19 PM on August 25th, 2011:

I’m curious as to just how many of Asante’s picks come from that out and post route combo (don’t remember the name for it) where he just sits on the out

  37. 37 iskar36 said at 8:21 PM on August 25th, 2011:

So far this offseason, our running has looked great. McCoy has been everything we expected and more, Ronnie Brown so far seems to be a great addition, and Lewis in the two previous games has done a great job…. and as I type this, McCoy gets tackled in the backfield…

  38. 38 DB said at 8:23 PM on August 25th, 2011:

Special Teams look awesome so far.

  39. 39 Damon said at 8:23 PM on August 25th, 2011:

  40. 40 nicolajNN said at 8:23 PM on August 25th, 2011:

I was hoping we didn’t get that 1st down, and we didn’t πŸ™‚

  41. 41 Tommy Lawlor said at 8:25 PM on August 25th, 2011:

I hope we see Henery kick from 45 or so tonight. That’s the real test.

Vick and the passing game are not clicking. Part of it is protection, but something is still off.

  42. 42 theguyotc said at 8:25 PM on August 25th, 2011:

Why does a 10-0 lead feel like they’re losing?

  43. 43 Kushan said at 8:26 PM on August 25th, 2011:

Need more short – intermediate passing routes. Get Vick in a rhythm!

  44. 44 BC said at 8:26 PM on August 25th, 2011:

If they didn’t get the first down, I wish they at least didn’t get any yards so we could’ve seen a longer field goal.

  45. 45 mattman said at 8:26 PM on August 25th, 2011:

I think Vick is still getting confused by blitzes and hasn’t internalized his hot reads yet.

  46. 46 Joe said at 8:26 PM on August 25th, 2011:

Tommy. I know its just preseason, but I am still shocked by how the eagles just cant cope with adjusting to what defenses are showing them.

We know the blitz is coming, so why know leave guys in to block? It just seems as though the eagles seem to always try to run their O without consideration of what the D is throwing at them.

Should we be worried about this or am I just over reacting?

  47. 47 Iowa Eagle said at 8:29 PM on August 25th, 2011:

Was that Rolle that went up and moved the DT? Loved to see those instincts…

  48. 48 DB said at 8:30 PM on August 25th, 2011:

    Chaney looks like a beast.

Hopefully this transfers to the reg season.

  49. 49 Tommy Lawlor said at 8:31 PM on August 25th, 2011:

    @ Iowa Eagle…

That was Rolle adjusting the DTs alignment.

    RE: Offense

Let’s hope Mudd got the OL settled down and that Big Red got Vick settled down.

  50. 50 Steag209 said at 8:31 PM on August 25th, 2011:

I think that Maclin just might be more important to Vick than any of us realize

  51. 51 Ryan said at 8:32 PM on August 25th, 2011:

Casey is looking much better and Chaney has looked great to me so far, esp in pass coverage

  52. 52 nicolajNN said at 8:33 PM on August 25th, 2011:

Tommy, in the past you have questioned Fokou’s ceiling. But what do you think of that of our other starting 7 round LB, can Chaney be special?

  53. 53 Ryan said at 8:34 PM on August 25th, 2011:

120 catches for Lesean this year?

  54. 54 GermanEagle said at 8:35 PM on August 25th, 2011:

Can we take Vick out of the game please, NOW?!!

  55. 55 Damon said at 8:37 PM on August 25th, 2011:

Have we completed a pass to a wr?

  56. 56 Jeppe said at 8:38 PM on August 25th, 2011:

No penalty on D. Jackson… Clean sack.. Come on D-line!!

  57. 57 DB said at 8:39 PM on August 25th, 2011:

Horrible roughing the passer call. Just put QB’s in a red jersey if they’re gonna call crap like that.

  58. 58 BC said at 8:39 PM on August 25th, 2011:

Banner has instructed Reid that no WR’s will get a pass their way until Jackson has signed his contract.

  59. 59 JB said at 8:40 PM on August 25th, 2011:

Why would Big Red let Vick get hammered for an entire half like that? Wouldn’t he rather want to max protect and let Mike get a feel for the game considering he hasn’t had the summer to really click with the O?

  60. 60 Jeppe said at 8:40 PM on August 25th, 2011:

  63. 63 Steag209 said at 8:45 PM on August 25th, 2011:

  71. 71 PK said at 8:54 PM on August 25th, 2011:

Is Clevelands defence concetrating on long to intermediate and forcing us to check down to McCoy?

I’ve got no issue with that if it always gets us decent yardage and untill cle adjusts – just keep doing it and let them have our wrs…

  72. 72 nicolajNN said at 8:54 PM on August 25th, 2011:

  79. 79 Ryan said at 9:03 PM on August 25th, 2011:

  80. 80 PA_eagle said at 9:04 PM on August 25th, 2011:

How good is this CLE O-Line? I was expecting more pressure from the D-line.

Colt McCoy seems to be doing some good things.

  81. 81 PK said at 9:05 PM on August 25th, 2011:

    Quick first impressions Tommy?

    1. Rookies on O-Line

    2. Dunlap

    3. Matthews

  82. 82 Iowa Eagle said at 9:05 PM on August 25th, 2011:

I love JP and it might be emotions, but if we gotta cut JP to keep Hunt… I’m in. No way he stays on the PS if we put him there. JP is 33/34? Hunt is 25… gotta think investment even if he might seem a bit raw yet..

  83. 83 iskar36 said at 9:06 PM on August 25th, 2011:

I saw your post about resting Shady, Jackson, and Vick for the 3rd quarter, but what do you think about the starters on defense in the 3rd quarter?

  84. 84 Tommy Lawlor said at 9:11 PM on August 25th, 2011:

I want the defense to play one series in the 3rd. Then rest ’em.

Sit the skill players on offense, but have the OL play a series or two.

  85. 85 Mac said at 9:11 PM on August 25th, 2011:

Can’t see the game, but going back to RT I don’t think they should cut Harris, he was solid in Denver and why go into the season with Dunlap and Wells as your only guys if Justice is still hurt.

  86. 86 Tommy Lawlor said at 9:13 PM on August 25th, 2011:

Really hard to judge the OL so far. I’ve been commenting here and Twitter, plus approving comments. Haven’t been able to study replays.

The OL did show good progress in the game. They got better from 1st to 2nd Qtr.

    RE: Matthews

He got better as the game went along. Had a couple of tackles and broke up a pass. Showed more confidence. I’d definitely encouraged.

    RE: O-line

I think I’d rather not risk Peters or Herremans on the wet field. The line is bad enough already.

  88. 88 iskar36 said at 9:16 PM on August 25th, 2011:

Ouch, that was an ugly return by Lewis.

  89. 89 iskar36 said at 9:18 PM on August 25th, 2011:

  90. 90 Tommy Lawlor said at 9:24 PM on August 25th, 2011:

  104. 104 Tommy Lawlor said at 9:41 PM on August 25th, 2011:

Wet cheerleaders > wet Andy? If you guys say so. I think Big Red is a thing of beauty at all times.

Bobby April didn’t set the world on fire in 2010, but the STs units look terrific so far this year. I hope that carries over to the regular season.

  105. 105 theguyotc said at 9:43 PM on August 25th, 2011:

    @Duc848

No, Andy Reid is a fit for the old system. The new system requires undersized athletic young guys who miss blocks.

  106. 106 PK said at 9:45 PM on August 25th, 2011:

And the old system required mammoth old guys who miss blocks…

  107. 107 Ryan said at 9:47 PM on August 25th, 2011:

at one point the system required you be related to or played in college with shawn andrews, and missed blocks

  108. 108 BC said at 9:48 PM on August 25th, 2011:

I don’t know about beauty, but it would be very entertaining to see Reid shirtless and in tights doing a Chippendale dance ala Chris Farley.

  109. 109 Tommy Lawlor said at 9:52 PM on August 25th, 2011:

Casey Matthews is still on the field with the #2 Nickel D. Just missed a tackle. He’s not playing in the base unit. Akeem has that spot.

Good footwork on the PBU by Trevard Lindley. That’s been an area tha Juan has worked with him on all summer.

  110. 110 Kammich said at 9:55 PM on August 25th, 2011:

Can’t watch the game live, so I’m waiting eagerly until 11 PM for the NFL Network encore. I live in Virginia Beach, and I was telling everyone at work today, “I don’t give a damn if we get nailed by this hurricane. Just tell it to wait until 2 A.m. so my power doesn’t go out before I get to watch the Birds!”

Hey, I never claimed to have my priorities straight.

    I’m confused

  113. 113 iskar36 said at 10:00 PM on August 25th, 2011:

That challenge rule makes absolutely no sense. Give the 15 yard penalty, but if the play is worth reviewing, then they still should take a look at it.

  114. 114 Duc848 said at 10:00 PM on August 25th, 2011:

What’s up with Eskin being on the sidelines, looks like an idiot. Happy with the play of the defense, OLine needs more time to work together!

  115. 115 Duc848 said at 10:03 PM on August 25th, 2011:

Nice block by Lewis! And nice run on top of that…..

  116. 116 nicolajNN said at 10:04 PM on August 25th, 2011:

So because Andy challenged the play it would not be reviewed even though all scoring plays should be reviewed?

  117. 117 Iowa Eagle said at 10:06 PM on August 25th, 2011:

This is the second preseason game the annoucers have brought up how well Vandervelde is playing… Do we risk letting him go to PS Tommy?

So they’re supposed to review the play fully, but don’t. Andy tries to point out a problem, and they not only penalize him but then refuse to change the call because of it?

Do they have kindergarteners writing the rule book now?

lol, was wondering if people were gonna mention that cutaway to the wet cheerleaders.

I thought Casey Mathews looked a lot better in the first half this week than last week.

Vick was getting murdered out there tonight, good grief the right side of the OL was getting murdered. I thought that Dunlap looked the best of the 3 though, even when he was getting beat he was riding his guy out of the play, and generally not doing everything he can to make sure Vick gets decapitated.

I thought Watkins had a terrible start to the game, he was just getting handled by Phil Taylor and on that one play he just strait up let a blitzer go right by him, didn’t even get a hand on him… Vicks lucky he didn’t get injured tonight. Watkins needs to get his act together and in a hurry.

Why not let Henery kick that? Why go for it?

  121. 121 Tommy Lawlor said at 10:09 PM on August 25th, 2011:

The whole TD/challenge situation doesn’t make sense. I think we are getting bad info from the telecast.

I think the TD was legit. Rcvr stepped out, re-established back in, and then caught a deflected pass. That should be legal. Key point is the deflection. Guy stepping out can’t be the first to touch.

I’m really sad that I missed the wet cheerleaders

  123. 123 Tommy Lawlor said at 10:11 PM on August 25th, 2011:

I think the wet field may have kept Henery from kicking. Don’t mess with the kid’s confidence in crappy conditions.

  124. 124 theguyotc said at 10:12 PM on August 25th, 2011:

Really like how Dion Lewis doesn’t hesitate heading into the line. Just powers through and gets what yards he can.

  125. 125 Ryan said at 10:16 PM on August 25th, 2011:

unlucky call on Hughes but I still think he can be really good

  126. 126 Name J o said at 10:16 PM on August 25th, 2011:

Right side needs some help. Teams are gonna blitz to death right at Watkins. Need JJ in there to help him with calls. Kelce will be good. Just not quite there.

Just in case you missed the topical reference…
Joe “I want to kiss you Suzy Kolber” Namath tweeted during the Jets game Sunday β€œGotta love seeing wet cheerleaders.”

Between the cheerleaders in the rain and that defender pulling a pointless Superman dive at the QB on that scramble, I really want the tape of this game.

  129. 129 Tommy Lawlor said at 10:24 PM on August 25th, 2011:

That dive was awesome. Reminded me of a kitten trying to pounce on something.

  130. 130 Duc848 said at 10:24 PM on August 25th, 2011:

Tommy still think Hunt is going be released? I think he is making the team for sure! How gets cut?

  131. 131 Duc848 said at 10:25 PM on August 25th, 2011:

Meant to say who will be released? Sorry, about that!

  132. 132 Ryan said at 10:28 PM on August 25th, 2011:

Dion is looking great tonight, running game as a whole much more on point than the pass game

  133. 133 Stan said at 10:29 PM on August 25th, 2011:

Why can’t they make those stupid bras out of cotton or silk?

Knock on wood, appears no injuries to report? Good news!

    @ Eagles Fan in SF…

    That is awesome.

  136. 136 Tommy Lawlor said at 10:37 PM on August 25th, 2011:

    No major injuries = awesome.

Dion Lewis is shocking the heck out of me. Dude can really play. I had my doubts, but he is impressive as hell so far. Love what I’m seeing from him.

  137. 137 Jd said at 10:38 PM on August 25th, 2011:

Just daydreaming how dominating this line would be with a healthy Shawn Andrews at RT with JJ and Watkins. To wish…. Watkins needs some serious film time. King did okay. I still think a healthy Harris is a better option. JJax will start against the rams. They wanted to see what Kelce could do against some monster DTs. Defense looked really good. Hope LB can keep that up. Brian Rolle…London Fletcher the second. Gonna be a great nickel backer.

I’m in PGH. Can’t stay up till 1am to watch rebroadcast. How did REggie Wells look? Just curious.

  139. 139 Tommy Lawlor said at 10:55 PM on August 25th, 2011:

I thought Reggie Wells did okay. I’m not sure CLE had much of a pass rusher testing him, though. Reggie didn’t stand out in a bad way, I can tell you that.

I’ll be re-watching the game here shortly.

  140. 140 Tommy Lawlor said at 10:56 PM on August 25th, 2011:

    @ JD…

When will Harris be healthy? Do you trust his back enough to put him on the final roster? I’d say to cut him and then you can re-sign Ryan after the first game.

Brian Rolle is a fun guy to watch. Good young player.

No sign of Trevor Laws out there. Was he inactive?

Cedric Thornton continues his ascent. Dude played really well. He was running with the #2 D-line with Landri. Think that he might make this team.

    RE: Hunt

We’ll see how he looks on tape. He flashed watching the game live. Don’t know how you’d cut him now. Maybe Teo goes to IR.

  144. 144 RogerPodacter said at 11:29 PM on August 25th, 2011:

    Tommy,
i saw a play late in the game where CLE’s QB was out wide on a bootleg, the DE was trying to catch up, but was clearly never going to make it. then out of nowhere a LB comes flying in at 100 mph and the qb quickly steps out of bounds.
i think that was Rolle. was it?
wow. that looked like some impressive speed.

Although that clip is nice, it really doesn’t do it the justice like when seeing it on HD. You could see each drop dripping off their tight bodies and the way it…….ok I gotta run

Can’t believe you didn’t use the word glistening in that post. Sad and disappointing. I expected more out of a varsity letterman.

I have to say, I think my favorite play of the night had to have been Jamar Chaney batting the ball away in the end zone on the pass to the RB. That type of pass defense is something I’m not sure I have seen from an Eagles LB in awhile.

I’m still concerned about the LBs, but I was definitely happy to see them have a solid game tonight.

  149. 149 Tommy Lawlor said at 1:08 AM on August 26th, 2011:

I’m re-watching the game now. Wanted to take a good look at the OL before even posting a quick postgame writeup.

Danny Watkins had the roughest night on the line.

  150. 150 Stephen said at 2:01 AM on August 26th, 2011:

Watching it live it looked like Watkins was the worst of the bunch, Kelce had some bad moments, and Dunlap wasnt lock down but even when he got beat he managed to ride his guy out of the play.
