Draft Talk – LB Style

Posted: October 27th, 2011 | Author: | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 29 Comments »

For my SB Nation Philly column I took a longer look at some LBs the Eagles might target.  I know I’ve written about LBs already, but each week I watch more tape and my opinions on the players can change.

As I mention in the column, Miami LB Sean Spence really impressed me against Ga Tech and their Triple Option running attack.  Some athletic LBs don’t handle that offense well.  Spence had a very good game and opened my eyes with his showing.

Couple of games to watch…tonight Miami plays Virginia on ESPN at 8pm.  Take a long look at Spence (#31).  See what you think.

Houston plays Rice on an oddball channel (I think I’ve got DirecTV set to 649).  Houston has a couple of LBs in Marcus McGraw and Sammy Brown.  I haven’t watched these guys all that much this year.  Brown seemed like more of a 3-4 guy when watching him in the past.

On Friday TCU plays BYU on ESPN at 8pm.  I didn’t cover Tank Carder (TCU LB) in my write-up despite the fact he’s a star player.  Carder got off to a slow start this year.  I’m not sure what’s up with him.  Bad case of senioritis, maybe.  Hopefully he’ll come alive down the stretch.  Still a prospect worth checking out.  Carder plays ILB in TCU’s 4-2-5 set.  He would be SAM or WLB in the Eagles system.

Full list of games on TV is here for those curious.  I’ll be posting something over on ScoutsNotebook about what to watch on Friday or early Saturday.

* * * * *

I’ll be writing about the Cowboys and Sunday’s game a bit later on.  I’ve just been watching lots of LBs and wanted to touch on that since I think we’re all less than thrilled with the current group.

I just hope we pick up a good LB next year.

Tommy – any chance with pick up safety Chris Harris just released from the Bears..?

He was having a terrible year for CHI. Adding him would be like throwing the Titanic a life raft with a hole in it. Okay, maybe that’s too weird an analogy. Bottom line…he would be a change, not an upgrade.

Plus, Nate Allen is playing well and Kurt Coleman is coming off his best game as a pro. Let’s see what the guys can do before we worry about adding a player who got cut because he played so poorly elsewhere.

I’d like to see the Eagles pick up 2 LB in the draft… probably target one in the 2nd round and one in the 4th-5th rounds. I still don’t see it as a highly valued position on this team. The defense is built like a peppermint patty. Hard and delicious chocolate outside and soft on the inside.

Jerk. Now you made me want a Peppermint Patty and there aren’t any in the vending machine.

I’ve had quite a few Peppermint Patties in my life, and yet I can’t remember ever actually buying them. I think they’re like looking for your keys or the remote: if you’re not looking, they kind of just appear.

As to the LB angle…we haven’t value LB in terms of 1st rounders, but we’ve spent a few 2nd rounders on them. If we don’t address the position via FA, I’d like to see 2 of the first 3 picks go for LBs. Let’s err on the side of caution and have too many bodies instead of not enough.

It would really be magical if the stars aligned in such a way as to hit the jackpot on LB in the 2012 draft. I wouldn’t mind seeing the Eagles use both 2nd rounders on LBers plus another late pick, I just would be surprised if they did it. I wouldn’t be surprised though if they were both good “value” picks. Still, if Howie wants to become a draft master like Belicheck, he needs to flip one of those 2nd round picks for a 2013 1st rounder.

I’m not going to say I’m thrilled with Chaney and Rolle, but I am willing to say that I am o.k. with them provided everyone else plays up to their abilities like they did in Washington.

Agreed. Would love to see 2 LBs picked within our first 3 picks.

I’m very high on Zach Brown. I know people like Rolle now, but I don’t see hims as a perennial starter at WILL. I think Zach starts day 1.

I’m not as certain on MIKE or SAM prospects. I like what I’ve read about Luke, and Burfict appeals to me, but am taking a wait and see approach on those two. If we could get Luke/Brown or Burfict/Brown on the first two days of the draft I’d be ecstatic.

    Hi Tommy,

What do you think our chances of coming away with 2 of the targets you mentioned in the column are? I love what you had to say about Kuelchy, and partnering him with Brown or Lewis would add some tackling and playmaking ability to our LB corps.

Where do you feel the LBs you covered are likely to be available in the draft? I’d love to see us pick one up with our 1st rd pick, but looking at our history, it seems unlikely. That ever-improving Cardinals 2nd seems like a good position to draft one of these guys. I’d be happy if our draft started:

    1st-BPA
    2nd-LB
    2nd-LB

I know. Dallas talk coming this evening. Busy week here at the Dairy Queen has affected my ability to write as much as I want.

I know he was coming off an ACL injury, but I really wish we would have pick up AJ Edds after the Dolphins cut him. Might not have been 100% this year, but coming out in the draft I believe Tommy called him the best pure 4-3 SAM backer in the 2010 draft.

Any chance Casey Matthews increases his offseason workout by having breakfast table conversations and lunch box discussions about football? (or gets on whatever his brother is on)?

And if you sprinkle some HGH on the french toast, it looks just like powdered sugar. Plausible deniability, anyone?

Then again, I wonder if there is any counteracting effects to putting performance enhancing drugs on something french?
