NFL Draft – Day 3

Posted: April 28th, 2012 | Author: | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 170 Comments »

Eagles picks so far:

1 – DT Fletcher Cox – 6-4, 298 – Mississippi State
2 – LB Mychal Kendricks – 5-11, 240 – Cal
2 – DE Vinny Curry – 6-3, 266 – Marshall
3 – QB Nick Foles – 6-5, 243 – Arizona

What are the remaining areas of need?

Slot corner – preferably someone who can challenge for a role right away

WR/RS – need a returner…can take time to develop as a WR

TE – if the Eagles truly want to do a lot more 2-TE sets, they will need to add another TE

OL – depth for OT/OG

Safety – someone who can fight for a job

RB – I don’t know that the team is focused on adding a rookie, but if the right guy is available, they could go for him

* * * * *

Who’s Left

Slot guys:  Brandon Boykin, DeQuan Menzie, Josh Norman, Ron Brooks, Jeremy Lane

WR/RS:  Joe Adams, Marvin Jones, Devon Wylie, Rishard Matthews, Jarius Wright,  Keshawn Martin

TE:  Ladarius Green, Orson Charles, Taylor Thompson, Derek Carrier

OL:  Brandon Mosley, Senior Kelemete, Tom Compton, Nate Potter, Ryan Miller, Levy Adcock

S:  Antonio Allen, George Iloka, Janzen Jackson, Markelle Martin, Duke Iheancho, Justin Bethel, Jerron McMillian, Winston Guy, Jordan Bernstine

RB:  Robert Turbin, Chris Rainey, Vick Ballard, Cyrus Gray, Lennon Creer

* * * * *

Some guys have dropped.  There are issues we don’t know about.

Boykin broke his leg in the Senior Bowl and never got to work out for scouts.  His injury has hurt him.

Lamar Miller apparently has shoulder issues.

No idea why Bobby Massie has fallen.  Should go early today.

Not sure on some other guys who’ve fallen.

Out of this list I want the Eagles to get 4 players…guys I covet (more or less)

WR Mohamed Sanu – Rutgers … physical receiver who can work the slot, help in the Red Zone
WR Rishard Matthews – Nevada … physical receiver with great RAC ability and a very good PR
WR T.Y. Hilton – FIU … speedy playmaker who could play in the slot and be a dynamic RS
WR Keshawn Martin – Michigan State … athletic playmaker who dould play in the slot and be a good RS
TE Coby Fleener – Stanford … Tall TE with good speed.  Playmaker and RZ guy.
TE Michael Egnew – Missouri … TE with size, speed, and skills.  Could be good value
RB Ronnie Hillman – SDSU … Small, but speedy RB who would make a good backup.

DT Fletcher Cox – Miss State … Great pass rusher.
DT Derek Wolfe – Cincinnati … Very good pass rusher.
DT Jared Crick – Nebraska … Good pass rusher.
DE Vinny Curry – Marshall … Gifted pass rusher.  Can play on the inside if needed.
LB Luke Kuechly – Boston College … Should solve the SAM problem.
LB Bobby Wagner – Utah State … Could be an excellent SAM target.
LB Demario Davis – Arkansas State … Talented enough to play SAM, but could also fit in at any spot.
S Antonio Allen – South Carolina … Excellent box Safety and run defender.
CB Brandon Boykin – Georgia … Slot corner with great RS ability.
CB DeQuan Menzie – Alabama … A bit slot, but very quick and very tough.  Good slot guy.
CB Josh Norman – Coastal Carolina … Gifted cover guy. Can play CB, slot, maybe Safety.

Please Avoid These Players

QB Brandon Weeden – age
QB Brock Osweiler – overrated
WR Marvin McNutt – struggles vs top CBs
TE Orson Charles – Short, less athletic than thought
DT Devon Still – motor?
LB Nigel Bradham – not physical enough
CB Janoris Jenkins – too much weed, can’t control his seed

    $$$ IGGLES BLITZ CHALLENGE $$$
    NEED 15 BRAVE SOLDIERS…

    Friends,

As we careen towards the NFL draft and the real beginning of the 2012 season I’d like to remind everyone of all the hard work Tommy and Sam do to bring us the most entertaining and most educational forum for Eagles-based discussion on the Internet. It takes a lot of hard work and time to generate fresh content, respond to comments, and maintain this space so I’d like to ask everyone to take a little of your own time and consider making a donation in any amount to Iggles Blitz.

For me, reading and participating on this site is worth at least $1 a day (the price of a stale bag of Funyuns), so I’m issuing a challenge: If we can get just 15 donations before the end of the draft I will happily donate $366 to Iggles Blitz (thanks a lot, leap year). That’s money that can be used for precious resources like acquiring and maintaining a tape library, any licensing and legal fees, and of course, refilling the water cooler with life-sustaining PBR.

Please give any amount you feel comfortable with:

    – $12 is $1 per month and can buy approximately 400 boxes of pudding
    – $25 is roughly $.50 a week, and can furnish the library with the complete set of 1980’s Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Editions
    – $50 is roughly $.14 a day, enough to enroll the entire secondary in tackling class

While your pledge won’t get you a handsome “Iggles Blitz” tote bag, an emergency radio, or season 2 of Downton Abbey on Blu-Ray, it will earn you the respect of every reader here and the self-satisfaction of sustaining this amazing website.

Where else on the web can you read a detailed analysis after every game including the final pre-season game? Where else can you get “on the ground” reports from the Senior Bowl? Where else can you pretend you’re an NFL GM and demand a scouting report on Miles Burris for three days and then actually get one free of charge?

On the right hand side of the page is a “DONATE” button. Please consider giving a few dollars to a resource I know you all enjoy as much as I do. No need to post how much you gave, and if you’re unable please steer others to this challenge.

NOTE: Tommy and Sam have not solicited this challenge in any way, shape or form and will undoubtedly shy away from it. Besides, they should be busy preparing for the apocalypse when we trade up in the first round to select Vontaze Burfict.

Also posted in an earlier thread. I’m in.

The amount of work Tommy puts into this site is amazing. I can always wow my football friends here in the Netherlands with the knowledge from igglesblitz. That’s always worth a lot 😉

    Baloophi & others,

I’m left speechless by the generosity. Thank you very much. I’ll raise a PBR in your honor this evening. Maybe even 2.

    RE: Nick Foles

The NFL has never had a quarterback from the U of AZ.

(If that’s been noted before, my apologies)

I love the guy’s size. But his delivery isn’t as tight and explosive as Lindley.

I really hated that the Eagles spent a 3rd rounder on a QB — this guy or anyone else . . . especially because he’s from a pure spread.

Would have preferred Lindley on Day 3

    (reposted)

  6. 6 TommyLawlor said at 12:19 PM on April 28th, 2012:

Also prefer Lindley. Need to do a lot of tape watching on Foles to figure out why Andy/Marty/Howie liked him so much.

  7. 7 JRO91 said at 1:01 PM on April 28th, 2012:

Because Andy cOuldnt stand the all defensive draft. Had to still in his annual QB waste pick.

My fantasy draft for the Eagles:

    4th – CB/RS Brandon Boykin
    5th – WR/RS Rishard Matthews
    6th – OL Nate Potter
    6th – TE Matt Veldman
    7th – LB Danny Trevathan

  9. 9 T_S_O_P said at 12:18 PM on April 28th, 2012:

Like 4 and 7, don’t know enough of the others.

  10. 10 TommyLawlor said at 12:21 PM on April 28th, 2012:

    Matthews – http://2011.scoutsnotebook.com/rishard-matthews/

    Potter – http://2011.scoutsnotebook.com/nate-potter/

Veldman is 6-7, 256 and is a good athlete. Didn’t have time to do write-up.

  11. 11 deg0ey said at 12:24 PM on April 28th, 2012:

That would be awesome. The only pick I’d change would be Joe Adams instead of Matthews, but I don’t expect him to still be there at the end of the 5th. Having said that, we didn’t expect Curry to still be on the board at the end of the 2nd so what do we know? :p

  12. 12 deg0ey said at 12:32 PM on April 28th, 2012:

    And there he goes 🙁

  13. 13 iskar36 said at 12:18 PM on April 28th, 2012:

You mentioned TE, but at this point, is there anyone that would push Harbor? I was for drafting Fleener early because I thought he could be an added weapon to this offense in a way Harbor could not, but at this point, I would like to see what Harbor can do.

  14. 14 Baloophi said at 12:26 PM on April 28th, 2012:

It would be nice to have 3 TE’s though… guard against injury, and makes you feel better about using the 2 TE set so often…

  15. 15 TommyLawlor said at 12:35 PM on April 28th, 2012:

As Baloophi said, you do need 3 TEs if you want to play 2 a lot. Gotta have that depth. The guys out there aren’t great, but have good size/speed numbers and are projects of interest.

  16. 16 nopain23 said at 12:20 PM on April 28th, 2012:

Really wanted to come out of this draft with two LB prospects…any options T?….plus how about that kid from Mcnee State Jackson?….off field issues not withstanding..has a good skill set no?…man how badly is boykin really injured?…should we take a flier on him?

  17. 17 TommyLawlor said at 12:36 PM on April 28th, 2012:

Tank Carder is a guy I still like.
    Trevathan.
    Keenan Robinson is classic SAM.
    Terrell Manning could be WLB.

  18. 18 Baloophi said at 12:25 PM on April 28th, 2012:

    Wow… Skins doubling-down on QB’s…

  19. 19 ian_no_2 said at 12:28 PM on April 28th, 2012:

I type WTF online for the first time. Don’t they have a QB? They have a lot of other holes to fill. What are they playing for if RG3 goes down? They don’t have enough draft picks to compete with the rest of the league’s talent pool after the RG3 trade.

Maybe they’ll be trading up for Barkley next year. Maybe they won’t need to.

  20. 20 Baloophi said at 12:32 PM on April 28th, 2012:

Maybe Cousins is coming in to play tackle?

  21. 21 deg0ey said at 12:29 PM on April 28th, 2012:

So not only do they not want Rex or Beck to start, they also don’t want them as a backup. Can’t say I blame them

  22. 22 Alex Karklins said at 12:32 PM on April 28th, 2012:

LOLSkins. I feel really bad for RGIII, he’s not getting any help!

  23. 23 TommyLawlor said at 12:36 PM on April 28th, 2012:

Interesting. Not a fan of taking Cousins after RG3.

  24. 24 T_S_O_P said at 12:42 PM on April 28th, 2012:

It’s not like they trade picks away, so they can afford to waste picks. We should learn from them.

  25. 25 Baloophi said at 12:33 PM on April 28th, 2012:

Nigel Bradham off the “avoid” list…

  26. 26 Baloophi said at 12:34 PM on April 28th, 2012:

Gotta believe Pete Carroll fell in love with Robert Turbin’s character… seems like a guy who makes emotional picks.

  27. 27 TommyLawlor said at 12:53 PM on April 28th, 2012:

Pete values guys that truly stand out in some way. Turbin has huge upper body. Physically imposing. Sure Pete loves that.

  28. 28 ian_no_2 said at 12:35 PM on April 28th, 2012:

Seahawks have picked Bobby Wagner, Russell Wilson (3rd), and Robert Turbin after that Irwin pick. That will be an interesting backfield.

  29. 29 ian_no_2 said at 12:39 PM on April 28th, 2012:

    Joe Adams off the board

  31. 31 deg0ey said at 12:42 PM on April 28th, 2012:

What do people think of Ladarius Green? I could maybe see him being a kind of hybrid TE/WR

  32. 32 deg0ey said at 12:44 PM on April 28th, 2012:

And there he goes. Why is it whenever I mention a player’s name he goes off the board straight away.

  33. 33 Baloophi said at 12:59 PM on April 28th, 2012:

That, my friend, is your super power. Sure, others get invisibility or the ability to fire lightning from the palms of their hands, but you can summon draft picks for other teams with just a few keystrokes.

    Use this power responsibly…

  34. 34 deg0ey said at 1:01 PM on April 28th, 2012:

Right, so I’ll aim for a certain disgraced LB when the Giant are on the clock, shall I? :p

  35. 35 Baloophi said at 1:13 PM on April 28th, 2012:

    YES!

(of course with our luck he’d probably right the ship and destroy us for years)

  36. 36 TommyLawlor said at 12:54 PM on April 28th, 2012:

  39. 39 Alex Karklins said at 2:19 PM on April 28th, 2012:

I wonder if he got in trouble for so openly making fun of the pick.

  40. 40 ian_no_2 said at 12:58 PM on April 28th, 2012:

Colts have drafted Luck, WR TY Hilton, Fleener and another TE, Dwayne Allen.

  41. 41 ian_no_2 said at 12:58 PM on April 28th, 2012:

u have to protect Luck and get him on the field, but I like that approach more than the Skins getting FA WRs, so that they can play together for a while

  42. 42 Baloophi said at 1:02 PM on April 28th, 2012:

I guess they believe Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis are getting younger?

  43. 43 ian_no_2 said at 1:05 PM on April 28th, 2012:

they could draft D instead of the 2nd TE, but at least they’re getting quality. Luck and Fleener have to potential to be a legendary combo

  44. 44 Baloophi said at 1:12 PM on April 28th, 2012:

Though they could lose a lot of games 44-42 if they don’t patch that D.

  45. 45 Baloophi said at 1:00 PM on April 28th, 2012:

Orson Charles off Tommy’s “avoid” list…

    That leaves McNutt…

  46. 46 ian_no_2 said at 1:01 PM on April 28th, 2012:

Eventually you stop playing Will Boykins Fall and you start playing Why Didn’t They Pick Boykins?

  47. 47 TommyLawlor said at 1:07 PM on April 28th, 2012:

If Boykin isn’t picked at 123, then there is a serious medical concern and he could go undrafted entirely. He did break his leg in Mobile. Was supposed to work out for teams on 4/9’/12, but wasn’t able to.

Good prospect, but medical concerns are something that teams take very, very seriously.

  48. 48 ian_no_2 said at 1:10 PM on April 28th, 2012:

See you can’t even wait to play Why Didn’t. Both at the same time are too complicated for me, multitasking

  49. 49 Baloophi said at 1:11 PM on April 28th, 2012:

Perhaps he went with Cornelius Ingram’s surgeon?

  50. 50 deg0ey said at 1:18 PM on April 28th, 2012:

If that’s the case, then I wonder if we see them take Antonio Allen…

  51. 51 nopain23 said at 1:01 PM on April 28th, 2012:

Wow..boykin still available?….does he get to iggles pick?……

  52. 52 Dan Jones said at 1:12 PM on April 28th, 2012:

    fingers crossed

  53. 53 TommyLawlor said at 1:09 PM on April 28th, 2012:

Eagles will have good CB choices. Curious if they go for one.

Also wonder about trading back to add another 5th or future pick.

  54. 54 deg0ey said at 1:14 PM on April 28th, 2012:

Maybe both? They could trade out of the 4th for a 5th and a future pick?

  55. 55 ian_no_2 said at 1:17 PM on April 28th, 2012:

Thing is, with Marsh, Hughes, and DRC I don’t see the point in reaching for a CB in the 4th unless he’s for the slot. I can see getting a top guy 1-2, but not here unless it’s for slot. I’m for riding Joselio if need be.

  56. 56 Steag209 said at 1:11 PM on April 28th, 2012:

Why has Boykin fallen so far? I read he broke his leg, does that mean it was alot more serious than it sounds?

  57. 57 deg0ey said at 1:15 PM on April 28th, 2012:

It’s either more serious than it sounds, or nobody’s brave enough to pick him in case he doesn’t get back to his best

  58. 58 nopain23 said at 1:19 PM on April 28th, 2012:

Iggles have bad luck with guys with injury histories

  59. 59 BC1968 said at 1:11 PM on April 28th, 2012:

This is a write-up from sportingnews if it means anything:

    The Eagles Defense

This unit was shredded at times last season, unable to hold late leads, especially after the offense committed key turnovers. But the Philadelphia Eagles added three potential studs to their defense—tackle Fletcher Cox (first round), linebacker Mychal Kendricks (second round) and defensive end Vinny Curry (second round).

Cox and Kendricks should make the Eagles less vulnerable up the middle, while Curry is another pass rusher to complement Trent Cole and Jason Babin. Most scouts expected Curry to go sooner than the 59th pick. The Eagles gladly accepted Curry falling into their laps.

    NB
    Return Specialist
    Depth at DE

Think this draft has been very kind to the state of PA. I think the Steelers have played that board and let some excellent players come to them, really helping their OL out. And I love the Eagles draft, firing on all cylinders. Texans also quietly done a very nice job revamping that defensive front and receiving corps.

Terms of losers, well, Washington jumps out at me. Leribeus early 3rd? Little bit of head scratcher. Then a backup QB when you just got RG3. Whats going on here? And I like Keenan Robinson but not sure he is a great fit for 3-4 (they gonna play him inside?) Strange draft for DC.

  114. 114 K.Y. said at 1:46 PM on April 28th, 2012:

The draft has been going pretty close to what Tommy has envisioned, except perhaps the QB. The TE class is not impressive and at this point not many quality guys around. OL and DB/S are still possible. The FO should start looking into the FA market to bring in vet players to fill the remaining openings, RS specially.

Another great Jerry Reese draft, though the Eagles are answering in kind. Cowboys haven’t done so well after the very good Claiborne tradeup. Skins are drafting like Dan Snyder has kicked everyone out of the office and is picking names at random.

Heckert and co. is making a lot of left field picks. Mitchell Schwartz at 37 is high, over Jonathan Martin. Schwartz doesn’t seem to be physically that good but can be a solid late 2nd at the most. The later ones are confounding conventional opinion.

I didn’t follow the draft too closely before Andy Reid came to Philadelphia. Since, I think it’s safe to say this has been by far the best draft for the Eagles from a fan, draft weekend perspective.

I’m more than willing to give Andy Reid his 3rd round, developmental QB. At least we didn’t draft Osweiller, Weeden, or a guy who looks like a permanent, journeyman backup, Kirk Cousins. Foles has a cannon of an arm, and threw for over 4000 yards, 28 TDs and 14 INTs in 2011. Yeah this was the PAC-12 and not the SEC or Big 10, but it’s something. Interesting that Andy also talked up Russell Wilson, since the two aren’t very similar at all. I have no idea if Andy will be successful developing Foles, but given he got draft picks from Detmer, Feeley, and Kolb, I’d say anything is possible.

In any case, the player I would have rather Andy taken in the 3rd, we got in the 4th anyhow. If Foles is giving you problems, pretend we got him with the 123rd pick and think about it again.

  141. 141 deg0ey said at 2:51 PM on April 28th, 2012:

“Foles has a cannon of an arm”

This part of your post particularly intrigues me. I’ve not seen Foles play enough to really pass judgement, but pretty much every article I’ve read since he was drafted has said that he’s actually got quite a weak arm…

Just interested to know what you’ve seen that suggests he’s got a cannon.

  142. 142 iskar36 said at 3:04 PM on April 28th, 2012:

I’ve seen both comments a few times. Some scouts say he has a cannon while other say he has a weak arm. On scoutsnotebook.com, Matt Alkire wrote a post-3rd round review so far of the Eagles and said,

“Where he loses me is anything over 20 yards. The zip comes off the ball and you don’t get a spiral. If he has to hit an outside breaking route his ball will fall behind or low often. People say he has a “big arm” and it must be because he floats balls to Juron Criner. I think those people are the same that thought Brady Quinn had a big arm floating passes to Maurice Stovall and Rhema McKnight. All three receivers are constantly adjusting to floating ducks. That’s not a big arm, that’s just heaving the ball deep. It doesn’t work that way in the NFL. “

    Dennis Kelly, OT (6-8 1/8, 321) — Kelly ran the 40 in 5.33 and 5.41 seconds (he had a 1.82-second 10-yard split). He had a 27-inch vertical, 8-foot-8 broad jump, 4.91-second short shuttle and 7.73 three-cone, and performed 30 strength lifts. Kelly also has 33 1/2-inch arms.
