All-22 Time
Posted: June 15th, 2012 | Author: Tommy Lawlor | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 34 Comments »The NFL is doing a really good thing. They have decided to make All-22 coaches film available on NFL.com for the 2012 Game Rewind. Really great news.
In the past you could watch select plays, but that was only marginally helpful. You saw guys at their best/worst. Now you can watch from this angle all game long. The cost will be about $60.
The NFL did a survey on this back during the season, but then oddly came out and said it wasn’t actually thinking of releasing the All-22 film because there were people who didn’t want it to come out (coaches, GMs). I guess the NFL saw enough of a chance to make money and decided the heck with football worries. I wonder if they were inspired by the wisdom of the great Bobbi Flekman: “Money talks and bullshit walks.”
No matter why or how, this is going to be very helpful to those of us who study games and try to understand what happened.
Back in 2008 the Eagles beat the Giants in the playoffs. The DL played the run well in that game and had some big stuffs at crucial moments. I remember watching the NFL Network at mid-week when they review the game. They showed All-22 tape of some key run plays. I was blown away by what Mike Patterson and Brodrick Bunkley did. From the side, all you can see is a pile of bodies. From the endzone angle you could see the DTs playing 2-gap as perfectly as anyone could ever hope. They held up blockers and then got into the correct gaps to kill the runs. That was awesome. I had been impressed while watching the game, but this was on a whole other level.
Now we get that angle every single game, every single play. Very, very cool.
The one drawback will be time. The NFL puts games up on Rewind after the conclusion of the Sunday night game. Last year they didn’t add the All-22 highlight plays for another day or so. I wonder if it will be up the same night or will be delayed.
I hate the thought of writing out a game review based on TV tape and then watching the All-22 a day later and coming to different conclusions. There will be some confusion, but I’ll figure it out. This is a good problem to have.
All-22 tape allows you to see the DTs much better. OL play can be easier to judge. It will be hugely important for Safety/CB evaluation. It can also help with WR stuff.
I’m really stoked that the NFL did this.

For SB Nation Philly, I did an overview of what we learned at the OTAs. There were no sweeping conclusions, but we did learn a few things.

For PE.com, I wrote about the drama free summer and why that is important for Andy Reid.

I think you could say Don Banks likes this Eagles team.

Interesting post from Jimmy Bama…who has the better DL, Giants or Eagles? Most neutral fans will likely say the Giants due to a pair of Super Bowls. That’s fair. Their DL did play well in those games.
Jason Pierre-Paul is the best player. No doubt about that. Justin Tuck can still be an impact player. The Giants have an interesting collection of players after that. If the young guys step up, they could be really good.
The Eagles have great depth. There isn’t one dominant player. Maybe Fletcher Cox will change that in a couple of years.
Really tough question. There is no right answer.
What do you guys think?
Who wants a pudding pop?

it’s not a good thing, since nfl rewind is available only in the usa. so foreign fans are fracked, again. i’m very angry.
I didn’t know that. Interesting.
Doesn’t seem like a smart or fair policy by the NFL.
it’s not like i’ll ever become great at understanding this game, but how to be a student of it if not given the same tools as others. goodell is all very well, talking about expanding the nfl borders, it’s a hogwash and poppycock and codswallop. i don’t trust him at all.
Must have something to do with european/other countries copyright laws because hulu, pandora, etc. seemed to have trouble outside of the US at first as well.
As I said over on BtB, it’s the Giants until Cox/Curry/Graham do something.
You don’t think they looked dominant while doing drills vs pads?
Yeah, can’t wait to see the guys in live action.
Trust me, I would love it if those three got 12-18 sacks between them. Then I would say Eagles.
Tommy, those All 22 films are made for the way you write coverage! You’ll be able to do a postgame post to get the ball rolling, collect feedback from your readers about what questions they want answered, and then (hopefully) do a mid or late week post with scouting info and conclusions that wraps up the readers questions.
The only downside I see is your time! Put Time Turner on your Christmas list.
I do need a hot tub time machine.
very underrated movie in my opinion 🙂
Jacob: I’m kinda right in the middle of a thing right now, but can I text you later?
Girl at Club: Can you what?
Jacob: Are you online at all?
Girl at Club: I have no idea what you’re talking about.
Jacob: How do I get a hold of you?
Girl at Club: You come find me.
Jacob: That sounds… exhausting.
Man I miss pudding pops…
Why would coaches/GMs have a problem with the public getting the All-22 tape? It’s not like every coach and GM doesn’t already have access to it. There’s no worry of a competitor getting something out of it. It makes little sense for them to have a problem with it. Maybe the NFL couldn’t figure out a way to rape our wallets at the time of the decision.
They didn’t want fans seeing everything. Suddenly we can’t take coaches at their word on some plays as to what happened. Some players will be exposed.
Watching All-22 tape of a guy like Dawk the last few years could have told us a lot. Was he still pretty good or would the tape show that he’s really descending? That would open the Eagles to criticism for letting him go or the Broncos for signing him. Coaches/GMs hate stuff like that.
That’s a good point. I didn’t think of the PR side of things. Now if we only knew why they stopped making pudding pops. Someone get Bill Cosby on the line.
I guess we should all pitch in so you don’t have to pay for this. You’ll be doing the hard work through the season of course, so the least we can do is help you get the tools.
When I get home I’ll kick in some cash. Probably $10 or so.
Good idea Cliff, I thought the same thing… (And I live in Denmark, so I can’t get it myself)
Tommy, I am very lousy at remembering donating even though I read every line you write… Could you possibly do some sort of ‘membership’ where I for instance could sign up, and automatically pay, say 5 dollars/month?
https://gamepass.nfl.com/nflgp/secure/packages?ttv=0&ttp=3 It says on there that coaches film will be available on game pass too. So if you are game pass subscriber like myself you will be able to watch it. It`s pretty cool.
Nice because Im getting NFL gamepass this season
If you haven’t had it before, you are in for a treat!! I bought it last season for the first time, and can’t understand how I could have lived without it before…
Did you buy basic or premium?
Can you tell me what NFL gamepass is please? Also what is All-22 coach film, and where can you watch it? Also do you have to pay for it and how long are the films available?
Sorry for all the questions. If you don’t mind can you email me at dbonnie24@comcast.net
Thank you very much!!!
Excellent! Thank you for the heads up…
im sure we can get enough of us to pledge a little bit to cover tommy’s cost on it and enough for a case of PBR per game. ya know, to help with the evaluation and all.
Just as long as Tommy doesn’t play the shotgun a beer everytime the Eagles get a sack drinking game. Those game reviews would look something like “Eagles good… ajdlfkjeeslajifjds… pudding… WHY WONT YOU JUST LOVE ME BACK MEGAN?!!!”
$10.00 is a bargain for the insight Tommy can provide us from it.
Just sent it.
Oops! Almost forgot to actually send my $10… LOL
There it is!
Wow. I will shell out $59.99 for game rewind even though I know I won’t have much time at all to look (no contest for Tommy’s DGR). Could be a good tool to study critical plays after the fact.
In my view, WR vs secondary is the #1 benefit of All-22–we get almost none of it on regular TV, and certainly not as a a view of everyone running routes/playing coverage.
I think I’m going to get it too. Support it so they keep it available in future years.
my thoughts on what i would like to see, tommy…(assuming you had limitless time and junk food resources)
1) quick notes shortly after the game is over. i’m pretty sure you did this last season.
2) a 1-2 day later review of the game watching it a second time. this could be like a watered down version of your usual DGR. maybe focus on the players that you can get a good look at, and leave out the rest entirely?
3) a full featured DGR late in the week once the All22 has come out and you have a couple of days to review it.
i hope this leaves you with enough time to do a preview of the next game!!
side note: this would make the DGR for a sunday game difficult when we play the next game on thursday!
I think Tommy just needs to get the old Iggles Blog band back together. Perhaps Tommy and Sam can find a way to embarrass Derek and Gabe into joining forces again:

I kept reading All-22 on twitter and here I thought; why do they call it that? Is All-22 different from coaches tape? Is it a marketing thing? Is All-22 a code name or something?
Then, as I read the comments here and thought more about it, it suddenly hit me, there’s 22 players on the field and you can see ALL of them on the tape! Needless to say I feel like and idiot and want to hit myself in the head, very very hard
I treasure those moments in life. They remind me that I’m not as smart as I think I am.
Brilliant people, like me, need that sort of thing to keep us humble.
Wow, that is a very intriguing way to view those moments. I now hope to have one someday.
The all22 view is such huge news…for years I have prayed for this in my own silly way – ranting to anyone that would listen about how I hate having to take the word of the announcer to know something as basic as whether our defense is in zone or man. This will literally change the way I watch the Eagles. And since you brought me this amazing news I am going to give you a little bit of the credit…praise the messenger!
I expect to learn a lot about the game this year…can’t wait!
Thanks for having the best stuff to read in this drought of football…you are an offseason savior and a season long saint (not the kind that plots to end players’ careers)
