Game Thread – vs Pats, PS #2

Posted: August 20th, 2012 | Author: | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 125 Comments »

The Pats are sitting most of their stars.  Lesser test for the Eagles.  Too bad.  It is still important to see the Eagles play well.  In fact, now the pressure is on for the Eagles starters to really look good.  Let’s hope the guys play well.

And stay healthy.

Great to see Phillup Hunt bust his butt down the field and get in on that first punt coverage tackle. If he can do that consistently, we could save a spot on a LB

It’s frustrating to see the Pats rest their star players. It really translates to we will not get a great look at how our starters play against other stars/starters until week 1 of the season. As you said though, that means we need our starters to play well and look good. Otherwise, that will only create more questions.

  3. 3 iskar36 said at 8:18 PM on August 20th, 2012:

Ugh. Can’t let them convert a 3rd and long like that…

  4. 4 DamonL86 said at 8:22 PM on August 20th, 2012:

They are moving down the field with backups.

  5. 5 TommyLawlor said at 8:24 PM on August 20th, 2012:

One good play, one big penalty.

  6. 6 TommyLawlor said at 8:24 PM on August 20th, 2012:

Mychal Kendricks looks great so far. You can really see his speed.

  7. 7 Brandon Gleklen said at 8:24 PM on August 20th, 2012:

Hate that 15 yard penalty. Overall though, good drive for the D. No missed tackles!

  8. 8 iskar36 said at 8:31 PM on August 20th, 2012:

I can’t call that a good drive by them. They gave up a big play on 3rd down and allowed them to get down the field and score points (the penalty obviously was a big part of that). The thing is, this is not Brady and the Patriots starting offense, it is their 2nd string players for the most part, so the Eagles should be more dominant than that.

  9. 9 Kanin Faan said at 8:25 PM on August 20th, 2012:

What’s your take on Joselio Hanson over-running a couple of plays? (1st a screen to the left and then a run on the other side)
    ?

  10. 10 TommyLawlor said at 8:27 PM on August 20th, 2012:

Gotta check the tape. Wasn’t really focused on him on those plays.

  11. 11 Brandon Gleklen said at 8:31 PM on August 20th, 2012:

    Mike throw the ball away

  12. 12 Kanin Faan said at 8:32 PM on August 20th, 2012:

there’s something wrong when even I can tell, via an internet stream no less, what the play is going to be before it happens. No wonder he’s getting sacked.
That glance to the outside right before the snap was the give-away.

  13. 13 Liam Henry Garrett said at 8:42 PM on August 20th, 2012:

Where are you watching a stream of the game?

  14. 14 Kanin Faan said at 8:56 PM on August 20th, 2012:

membership only site. if youre interested for the future I could send you the url.

  15. 15 MichaelFloyd84 said at 9:54 PM on August 20th, 2012:

If i could get the url i would greatly appreciate it. Just cut the cable cord this year and have no ESPN. Twitter name is the same. TC84 on the EMB.

  16. 16 Liam Henry Garrett said at 10:05 PM on August 20th, 2012:

Yeah. That would be great. Thanks.

  17. 17 ceteris_paribus1776 said at 8:32 PM on August 20th, 2012:

Anyone actually feel comfortable with Vick at QB anymore? He’s so fragile at this point. I’ll be surprised if we get more than12 or 13 starts from him. In a QB driven league how can you compete with your starter only playing 3/4 the year?

  18. 18 DamonL86 said at 8:33 PM on August 20th, 2012:

    Hope its not broken ribs

  19. 19 Kanin Faan said at 8:34 PM on August 20th, 2012:

    cracked ribs arent much better…

  20. 20 TommyLawlor said at 8:35 PM on August 20th, 2012:

Hate having Vick as QB sometimes. No question about his toughness, but every hit seems to be life or death. Not good for nervous fans.

  21. 21 Kanin Faan said at 8:36 PM on August 20th, 2012:

what came first? the nervous fans or the qb that makes them nervous with his play? 😉

  22. 22 iskar36 said at 8:37 PM on August 20th, 2012:

He is mentally tough, but physically, he gets hurt way to easily.

  23. 23 Baloophi said at 8:36 PM on August 20th, 2012:

    Paging Tavaris Jackson’s agent.

  24. 24 TommyLawlor said at 8:38 PM on August 20th, 2012:

Yeah, really. Tarvaris suddenly seems like a good idea.

  25. 25 iskar36 said at 8:40 PM on August 20th, 2012:

To me, it didn’t take Vick getting hurt for it to seem like a good idea. Vick getting hurt in my mind was just a matter of time…

  26. 26 BC1968 said at 8:38 PM on August 20th, 2012:

So fucking sick of Vick, forget about thinking about him leading this team this year, whether this injury is bad or not.

  27. 27 Baloophi said at 8:39 PM on August 20th, 2012:

Just to throw it out there, maybe the old Castillo “retreat” philosophy for the OL is better suited to Vick’s tendencies than the Mudd “attack” approach. Certainly not for the run, but Vick can’t help but walk into hits…

  28. 28 iskar36 said at 8:39 PM on August 20th, 2012:

Hunt still playing lights out so far. Good to see.

  29. 29 iskar36 said at 8:40 PM on August 20th, 2012:

Dumb penalty by Cox, but DRC has been playing well.

  30. 30 TommyLawlor said at 8:46 PM on August 20th, 2012:

DRC is looking good. Poised for a big season.

  31. 31 Guest said at 8:41 PM on August 20th, 2012:

No shit he was taken in for x-rays. Why the hell else did he leave?

  32. 32 d m said at 8:41 PM on August 20th, 2012:

Too bad we are going to waste this great pass rush because our QB cannot stay healthy.

  33. 33 Steag209 said at 8:42 PM on August 20th, 2012:

I feel like I’m watching last year again. Vick hurt and the defense playing with their heads up where the sun don’t shine

  34. 34 Kanin Faan said at 8:43 PM on August 20th, 2012:

    Kendricks looks good.

  35. 35 Baloophi said at 8:43 PM on August 20th, 2012:

Nice to see we’ve really locked down those idiotic 3rd and long penalties on defense…

  36. 36 TommyLawlor said at 8:45 PM on August 20th, 2012:

I am ready to kill somebody. Un-freaking-believable.

  37. 37 Zachary Kaplan said at 8:54 PM on August 20th, 2012:

Good thing this is the game we’re treating as if it we’re a regular season…Any stud QB’s coming out next year?

  38. 38 DamonL86 said at 8:45 PM on August 20th, 2012:

against backups we cant get off the field

  39. 39 iskar36 said at 8:46 PM on August 20th, 2012:

So far, in 1Q, the Eagles starters have looked sloppy and outmatched by the Pats backups.

  40. 40 BC1968 said at 8:46 PM on August 20th, 2012:

What a horrible idea this is going to be keeping Juan. I just want to hang out with Morton right now.

  41. 41 the guy said at 8:47 PM on August 20th, 2012:

I hate this game so much.

  42. 42 iskar36 said at 8:48 PM on August 20th, 2012:

    Boooooooooooo!!!!

  43. 43 Baloophi said at 8:49 PM on August 20th, 2012:

In Juan’s defense, the Pats have only called 14 screen passes on 3rd down in the game – how was he supposed to know that was coming?

  44. 44 Baloophi said at 8:50 PM on August 20th, 2012:

If Kendricks were 6’2″ he would’ve intercepted that.

  45. 45 Zachary Kaplan said at 8:50 PM on August 20th, 2012:

This game sure is a confidence builder…

Where were are all the fans who thought that 4 game winning streak against 4 back-up QB’s was what this team would be in 2012?

Eagles Starting Defense? 20 points allowed
Eagles starting Offense? 0 points scored

I think we’re alot closer to that 4-8 squad than the 8-8 mirage

  46. 46 FalKirk said at 8:52 PM on August 20th, 2012:

I hate to have to point this out to you but…

…it’s the second preseason game. Ease up.

  47. 47 Zachary Kaplan said at 9:01 PM on August 20th, 2012:

No offense – this is a team that has made and is making the same mistakes during the last 4-5 years.

It’s not like I was expecting a 2000 Ravens defense. But dumb mistakes, tons of penalties, these aren’t “new” to the 2012 pre season. I don’t think it’s asking too much to see improvement in a 5 year span…guess I have higher expectations than you.

  48. 48 Zachary Kaplan said at 9:07 PM on August 20th, 2012:

    Just for some follow-up stats
    2009 – 31st in penalties – 7.3 per game
    2010 – 29th in penalties – 8.0 per game
    2011 – 23rd in penalties – 6.7 per game

    2009 – 56.9 penalty yards per game
    2010 – 67.7 penalty yards per game
    2011 – 53.3 penalty yards per game

Maybe – you know – our coaches could concentrate on the teams dumb mistakes and correct them…you know before 2020?

  49. 49 Brandon Gleklen said at 8:52 PM on August 20th, 2012:

    Todd Bowles time?

  50. 50 Zachary Kaplan said at 8:53 PM on August 20th, 2012:

The coaching staff has to go.

  51. 51 iskar36 said at 8:53 PM on August 20th, 2012:

We are getting embarrassed right now. Our defense looks pathetic and poorly coached. Our offense has not managed to maintain any kind of drive. And to make matters worse, our starting QB is out with an injury.

  52. 52 DarthBanner said at 8:53 PM on August 20th, 2012:

Pretty unimpressive. Still looks like our defense is being coached by an offensive line coach.

  53. 53 Baloophi said at 8:56 PM on August 20th, 2012:

The starters might have to play into 6th quarter with this nonsense…

  54. 54 BC1968 said at 8:57 PM on August 20th, 2012:

Get rid of Castillo after this game.

  55. 55 BC1968 said at 8:57 PM on August 20th, 2012:

So much talent on a defense that just can’t get it together.

  56. 56 DamonL86 said at 8:57 PM on August 20th, 2012:

    Undisciplined

  57. 57 DarthBanner said at 8:57 PM on August 20th, 2012:

3 personal fouls in the first half alone. The hallmark of a poorly coached team.

  58. 58 BC1968 said at 8:58 PM on August 20th, 2012:

    Love watching McCoy anyways.

  59. 59 MichaelFloyd84 said at 8:58 PM on August 20th, 2012:

Would canning Castillo after tonights mess be unprecedented? It’s mighty obvious that he doesn’t have what it takes. A real DC could do wonders here. Or hell, just promote Bowles

  60. 60 Baloophi said at 8:58 PM on August 20th, 2012:

Cujo screaming at Reid can’t be a good thing…

  61. 61 iceberg584 said at 9:01 PM on August 20th, 2012:

I could see Reid yelling “sit down!” The mouthpiece of the headset obscured his lips

  62. 62 TommyLawlor said at 9:05 PM on August 20th, 2012:

That was wild. I have never seen Reid and a player face to face like that. They’re talking on the sideline now (calmly), but that’s just crazy.

  63. 63 Baloophi said at 9:25 PM on August 20th, 2012:

Yeah, I can’t recall him interacting with a player like that on the sideline either…

  64. 64 rage114 said at 10:28 PM on August 20th, 2012:

A few years ago, he started yelling at Runyon for making a bone head play once.

  65. 65 Eagles Fan in San Fran said at 9:00 PM on August 20th, 2012:

This team is out of control and it ain’t even the regular season.
This smells like a 6-10 disaster in the making.

  66. 66 BC1968 said at 9:02 PM on August 20th, 2012:

That’s a lot of wins for this team.

  67. 67 MichaelFloyd84 said at 9:04 PM on August 20th, 2012:

In Foles we trust. I have a feeling that we end this year with another QB controversy

  68. 68 Eagles Fan in San Fran said at 9:06 PM on August 20th, 2012:

I have a feeling that we end the year with a new HC (or at least a temp one in Marty).

  69. 69 MichaelFloyd84 said at 9:13 PM on August 20th, 2012:

Unfortunately I think you are right. Reid has runs his course here. I love him, i just don’t see him getting it done anymore. Results of the last 5+ years have been subpar. His arrogance in promoting Juan may be the final nail in his coffin.

  70. 70 TommyLawlor said at 9:06 PM on August 20th, 2012:

Good back-to-back plays by Havili. Run set up TD. Block led way for TD.

  71. 71 BC1968 said at 9:13 PM on August 20th, 2012:

Stop trying to be an optimist tommy, you’re bringing up the mood.

  72. 72 iskar36 said at 9:06 PM on August 20th, 2012:

Glad to see us score, but that was a gift TD for us. I like that Boykin was near the football to cause the fumble, but the returner clearly fumbled the ball well before Boykin touched him. The turnover was entirely self inflicted by the Pats.

  73. 73 Brandon Gleklen said at 9:07 PM on August 20th, 2012:

Good special teams tackle for brown

  74. 74 Baloophi said at 9:08 PM on August 20th, 2012:

On the bright side, If we can perfect our “punt return strip” play, we could be looking at 20-30 scoring opportunities a game.

  75. 75 iskar36 said at 9:11 PM on August 20th, 2012:

Hunt has been a much needed bright spot so far this preseason.

  76. 76 Corry said at 9:16 PM on August 20th, 2012:

Definitely, and Foles looks like he’s a gamer.

  77. 77 iskar36 said at 9:18 PM on August 20th, 2012:

I think a few of the backups have done well. I was mentioning Hunt specifically because he is a guy that will likely see a significant amount of playing time.

  78. 78 ceteris_paribus1776 said at 9:11 PM on August 20th, 2012:

    that was a helluva throw

  79. 79 DarthBanner said at 9:12 PM on August 20th, 2012:

Nice to see Jackson make a catch like that.

  80. 80 iskar36 said at 9:14 PM on August 20th, 2012:

I’ve had my doubts about Harbor, but he has played reasonably well so far.

  86. 86 Kushan Patel said at 9:18 PM on August 20th, 2012:

Well, we know one thing. Hunt is making this team.

  87. 87 Corry said at 9:21 PM on August 20th, 2012:

These penalties are out of control. Holy crap.

  88. 88 Baloophi said at 9:23 PM on August 20th, 2012:

Methinks there’ll be some running in practice this week…

  89. 89 iskar36 said at 9:25 PM on August 20th, 2012:

I know that last throw was incomplete, but had it been on target, that screen would have gained a ton of yards as well. They have thrown screens all game. How are we not slowing them down at all?

  90. 90 iskar36 said at 9:25 PM on August 20th, 2012:

    ABSOLUTELY. NO. EXCUSE!

  91. 91 TommyLawlor said at 9:25 PM on August 20th, 2012:

  92. 92 DamonL86 said at 9:26 PM on August 20th, 2012:

Good to see we cant get off field on 3rd and long

  93. 93 DarthBanner said at 9:26 PM on August 20th, 2012:

Our defense aside from Hunts fumble and Hendricks has been brutal. Juan is not filling me with confidence. Just awful on 3rd down.

  94. 94 Baloophi said at 9:27 PM on August 20th, 2012:

7+ years later and we still have no answer for Deion Branch.

    Ummm… Happy?

  100. 100 iskar36 said at 9:32 PM on August 20th, 2012:

The Pats are 6-9 on 3rd down and at least 2 of the 3rd downs not converted so far have been 3rd and 12+ yards. That is simply atrocious defense. That’s on Castillo as well as the players.

  101. 101 DarthBanner said at 9:33 PM on August 20th, 2012:

lets see if the scrubby officials blow this one.

  102. 102 DarthBanner said at 9:39 PM on August 20th, 2012:

uhg. If you are going to use the time out, you should use it right away. Pointless to let 20 seconds tick off first. Andy never learns.

  103. 103 iskar36 said at 9:39 PM on August 20th, 2012:

After a performance like this in the 1st half of the “dress rehearsal” game, do the Eagles scratch that plan, sit the starters in the second half and redo the dress rehearsal next week, despite having to play the Browns week 1?

  104. 104 TommyLawlor said at 9:41 PM on August 20th, 2012:

    Good question. I don’t know.

  105. 105 Corry said at 9:40 PM on August 20th, 2012:

  107. 107 DamonL86 said at 9:41 PM on August 20th, 2012:

This 3rd down Defense is a joke

  108. 108 Andrew Moore said at 9:42 PM on August 20th, 2012:

Any chance 3rd down defense is suffering because we’re not calling blitzes and pressure like we normally would?

  109. 109 iskar36 said at 9:43 PM on August 20th, 2012:

We have blitzed a lot less since Wash came here. And on top of that, you still have to be able to execute a basic play call.

  110. 110 ceteris_paribus1776 said at 9:46 PM on August 20th, 2012:

a few drives ago they brought a blitz and got burned by a screen. Castillo just seemed over-matched. I’m guessing this team will feast on lesser competition and crumble against the big boys. More of the same

  111. 111 Baloophi said at 9:42 PM on August 20th, 2012:

I’m definitely in preseason form as a fan. I just threw a pillow at the TV and hit my thumb on the coffee table.

  112. 112 Andrew Moore said at 9:43 PM on August 20th, 2012:

Rest up. You’re going to need that pillow-throwing hand when we inexplicably and inexcusably blow a fourth quarter lead against the Browns.

That first half made my head hurt.

  118. 118 iskar36 said at 9:55 PM on August 20th, 2012:

That was a bad interception, and it is clear there are a few things Foles needs to work on, but I think he has definitely put Kafka on notice.

Honest question (not a sarcastic stab at Kafka): Has Kafka had the same level of success against a similar level of talent at any point in his career? I remember him having a few successful drives last preseason, but he was going against 3rd stringers, wasn’t he?
