Game Thread – vs Pats, PS #2

It is still important to see the Eagles play well. In fact, now the pressure is on for the Eagles starters to really look good. Let’s hope the guys play well.

Great to see Phillup Hunt bust his butt down the field and get in on that first punt coverage tackle. If he can do that consistently, we could save a spot on a LB
It’s frustrating to see the Pats rest their star players. It really translates to we will not get a great look at how our starters play against other stars/starters until week 1 of the season. As you said though, that means we need our starters to play well and look good. Otherwise, that will only create more questions.
Ugh. Can’t let them convert a 3rd and long like that…
They are moving down the field with backups.
One good play, one big penalty.
Mychal Kendricks looks great so far. You can really see his speed.
Hate that 15 yard penalty. Overall though, good drive for the D. No missed tackles!
I can’t call that a good drive by them. They gave up a big play on 3rd down and allowed them to get down the field and score points (the penalty obviously was a big part of that). The thing is, this is not Brady and the Patriots starting offense, it is their 2nd string players for the most part, so the Eagles should be more dominant than that.
What’s your take on Joselio Hanson over-running a couple of plays? (1st a screen to the left and then a run on the other side)

there’s something wrong when even I can tell, via an internet stream no less, what the play is going to be before it happens. No wonder he’s getting sacked.

Anyone actually feel comfortable with Vick at QB anymore? He’s so fragile at this point. I’ll be surprised if we get more than12 or 13 starts from him. In a QB driven league how can you compete with your starter only playing 3/4 the year?

Hate having Vick as QB sometimes. No question about his toughness, but every hit seems to be life or death. Not good for nervous fans.
what came first? the nervous fans or the qb that makes them nervous with his play? 😉
He is mentally tough, but physically, he gets hurt way to easily.

To me, it didn’t take Vick getting hurt for it to seem like a good idea. Vick getting hurt in my mind was just a matter of time…
So fucking sick of Vick, forget about thinking about him leading this team this year, whether this injury is bad or not.
Just to throw it out there, maybe the old Castillo “retreat” philosophy for the OL is better suited to Vick’s tendencies than the Mudd “attack” approach. Certainly not for the run, but Vick can’t help but walk into hits…

So far, in 1Q, the Eagles starters have looked sloppy and outmatched by the Pats backups.
What a horrible idea this is going to be keeping Juan. I just want to hang out with Morton right now.

In Juan’s defense, the Pats have only called 14 screen passes on 3rd down in the game – how was he supposed to know that was coming?
If Kendricks were 6’2″ he would’ve intercepted that.
This game sure is a confidence builder…
Where were are all the fans who thought that 4 game winning streak against 4 back-up QB’s was what this team would be in 2012?

I think we’re alot closer to that 4-8 squad than the 8-8 mirage
I hate to have to point this out to you but…
…it’s the second preseason game. Ease up.
No offense – this is a team that has made and is making the same mistakes during the last 4-5 years.
It’s not like I was expecting a 2000 Ravens defense. But dumb mistakes, tons of penalties, these aren’t “new” to the 2012 pre season. I don’t think it’s asking too much to see improvement in a 5 year span…guess I have higher expectations than you.
Just for some follow-up stats
2009 – 31st in penalties – 7.3 per game
2010 – 29th in penalties – 8.0 per game
2011 – 23rd in penalties – 6.7 per game
2009 – 56.9 penalty yards per game
2010 – 67.7 penalty yards per game
2011 – 53.3 penalty yards per game
Maybe – you know – our coaches could concentrate on the teams dumb mistakes and correct them…you know before 2020?

We are getting embarrassed right now. Our defense looks pathetic and poorly coached. Our offense has not managed to maintain any kind of drive. And to make matters worse, our starting QB is out with an injury.
Pretty unimpressive. Still looks like our defense is being coached by an offensive line coach.
The starters might have to play into 6th quarter with this nonsense…
Get rid of Castillo after this game.
So much talent on a defense that just can’t get it together.

Would canning Castillo after tonights mess be unprecedented? It’s mighty obvious that he doesn’t have what it takes. A real DC could do wonders here. Or hell, just promote Bowles

That was wild. I have never seen Reid and a player face to face like that. They’re talking on the sideline now (calmly), but that’s just crazy.
Yeah, I can’t recall him interacting with a player like that on the sideline either…
A few years ago, he started yelling at Runyon for making a bone head play once.
This team is out of control and it ain’t even the regular season.
This smells like a 6-10 disaster in the making.

Unfortunately I think you are right. Reid has runs his course here. I love him, i just don’t see him getting it done anymore. Results of the last 5+ years have been subpar. His arrogance in promoting Juan may be the final nail in his coffin.

Glad to see us score, but that was a gift TD for us. I like that Boykin was near the football to cause the fumble, but the returner clearly fumbled the ball well before Boykin touched him. The turnover was entirely self inflicted by the Pats.
Good special teams tackle for brown
On the bright side, If we can perfect our “punt return strip” play, we could be looking at 20-30 scoring opportunities a game.
Hunt has been a much needed bright spot so far this preseason.
Definitely, and Foles looks like he’s a gamer.
I think a few of the backups have done well. I was mentioning Hunt specifically because he is a guy that will likely see a significant amount of playing time.

I know that last throw was incomplete, but had it been on target, that screen would have gained a ton of yards as well. They have thrown screens all game. How are we not slowing them down at all?

Our defense aside from Hunts fumble and Hendricks has been brutal. Juan is not filling me with confidence. Just awful on 3rd down.

The Pats are 6-9 on 3rd down and at least 2 of the 3rd downs not converted so far have been 3rd and 12+ yards. That is simply atrocious defense. That’s on Castillo as well as the players.

After a performance like this in the 1st half of the “dress rehearsal” game, do the Eagles scratch that plan, sit the starters in the second half and redo the dress rehearsal next week, despite having to play the Browns week 1?

Any chance 3rd down defense is suffering because we’re not calling blitzes and pressure like we normally would?
We have blitzed a lot less since Wash came here. And on top of that, you still have to be able to execute a basic play call.
a few drives ago they brought a blitz and got burned by a screen. Castillo just seemed over-matched. I’m guessing this team will feast on lesser competition and crumble against the big boys. More of the same
I’m definitely in preseason form as a fan. I just threw a pillow at the TV and hit my thumb on the coffee table.
Rest up. You’re going to need that pillow-throwing hand when we inexplicably and inexcusably blow a fourth quarter lead against the Browns.

That first half made my head hurt.
That was a bad interception, and it is clear there are a few things Foles needs to work on, but I think he has definitely put Kafka on notice.
Honest question (not a sarcastic stab at Kafka): Has Kafka had the same level of success against a similar level of talent at any point in his career? I remember him having a few successful drives last preseason, but he was going against 3rd stringers, wasn’t he?

To be fair, they said the xrays of his ribs came back negative…. That would be a consistent report with your comment.
