Pats Game – 2nd half

Posted: August 20th, 2012 | Author: | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 70 Comments »

Ugh.  I was so happy at 8pm and that quickly was ripped apart, over and over.

Vick gets hurt.  X-rays are negative, but the constant frustration of every hit seeming to be the end of the world just wears on you.  The one 3rd down with Vick in the game is sloppy and ends in an incompletion.  Then Nick Foles comes in the game and the offense comes alive.  Didn’t expect to see that.

The defense is highly erratic.  There are moments when things look great, but then you have the mistakes.  3rd downs are killing us.  Penalties are the biggest issue, but the Pats have legitimately converted a few as well.  I’ll need to check the tape to see what the problem is.  Certainly not good to see.  The NFL is a 3rd down league.

Expect starters for a series, then backups the rest of the way.

Best player tonight is easily Mychal Kendricks.  He’s been great.  Speedy.  Active.  Playmaker.

I shudder to think what it would have looked like with the Patriots starters in.

  2. 2 Joshua Pringle said at 10:13 PM on August 20th, 2012:

I actually think that the Eagles would have played better against the starters. They really suffered a let down with the knowledge that they were playing against weaker competition. Some of them played down to their opponents level to an extent. Look at DRC giving up a step or two to the wideouts on purpose in an attempt to bait Mallett. Do you think he would have done that against Brady?

  3. 3 Anders Jensen said at 8:15 AM on August 21st, 2012:

Also lets not pretend that the NE offense is all Brady. Look at Cassel when Brady tore his ACL, look at Welker before he joined the Pat, look at Branch away from NE.
The star this game for the NE was playcalling and OL (they used alot of mass protection+screens to eliminate the Eagles D’s strength)

  4. 4 Corry said at 10:03 PM on August 20th, 2012:

The Vick injury is concerning, but, now that we know the x-rays are negative, I have to say that the most concerning thing about the game so far is the shouting match between Big Red and Cujo.

  5. 5 Corry said at 10:05 PM on August 20th, 2012:

Looks like Bell is in at left tackle.

  6. 6 A_T_G said at 10:05 PM on August 20th, 2012:

    In the new thread…

So am the only one questioning the Vick injury and xrays? There aren’t
any ribs down by your belt where Vick was holding himself.

  7. 7 Corry said at 10:07 PM on August 20th, 2012:

Probably more precautionary than anything. Better safe than sorry I suppose.

  8. 8 iskar36 said at 10:09 PM on August 20th, 2012:

Has Damaris been given any plays on offense so far?

  9. 9 Corry said at 10:10 PM on August 20th, 2012:

Saw him on the field once.

  10. 10 iskar36 said at 10:09 PM on August 20th, 2012:

I hate to jinx it, but Foles is looking really sharp on this drive.

  11. 11 Corry said at 10:10 PM on August 20th, 2012:

    I’m thoroughly impressed.

  12. 12 iskar36 said at 10:10 PM on August 20th, 2012:

And Kafka is officially at risk of being 3rd or possibly more likely, cut.

  13. 13 Cafone said at 11:26 PM on August 20th, 2012:

Where is the logic here? I’m not seeing it. How do good performances by Foles change the Kafka/Edwards depth positions?

“Hey, this Foles kid is looking good, let’s cut our #2 guy and put the #4 guy in his place.”

Foles looking good does not mean Edwards is any less shitty.

  14. 14 iskar36 said at 11:37 PM on August 20th, 2012:

The comment is less about Edwards and more about Kafka. Personally, I don’t think Kafka has much value for the team as the 3rd string QB. He isn’t a guy you ever project to be a starter already. If Foles has already beat him out, as an Eagle, his best hope is 3rd string QB. For a 3rd string QB, I would much rather have a guy who either has long term value (a rookie or young player who you can develop into a starter) or a guy with starting experience. Kafka is neither. He offers the Eagles nothing as a 3rd string QB. Edwards at the very least has shown he can play as a starting QB (granted, he didn’t look all that great tonight, but Kafka has never looked great either).

  15. 15 Cafone said at 11:49 PM on August 20th, 2012:

“If Foles has already beat him out”

The Eagles don’t set their QB depth charts based on fan opinion of performances in meaningless preseason games. Foles is looking pretty good. That’s good, but don’t get ahead of yourself.

The #2 will be the guy the Eagles think have the best chance of winning games for them this year. I seriously doubt that’s going to be Edwards, and I would be shocked if it’s a rookie.

  16. 16 DamonL86 said at 10:10 PM on August 20th, 2012:

    Foles for backup qb!

  17. 17 Andrew Moore said at 10:11 PM on August 20th, 2012:

Well, watching Foles, one at least feels that when Vick inevitably misses two games, we’ll at least have a punchers chance.

  18. 18 Steag209 said at 10:11 PM on August 20th, 2012:

Is Foles going against the 2’s or 3’s at this point?

  19. 19 iskar36 said at 10:12 PM on August 20th, 2012:

If Kafka gets beat out for backup QB, is there value of keeping him on the team?

  20. 20 TommyLawlor said at 10:13 PM on August 20th, 2012:

Sure…as #3. Trade him if you can. If not, keep him and cut Trent Edwards.

  21. 21 iskar36 said at 10:16 PM on August 20th, 2012:

But what’s the point of him as a number 3 if he has no future and isn’t talented enough to take on the backup role. I would think at that point, Edwards would be a more intriguing option as 3rd string QB.

  22. 22 Andrew Moore said at 10:20 PM on August 20th, 2012:

Edwards has been kicking around the league for quite a while now. He has no upside. We know what he is. At least Kafka knows the system. You hope, in an emergency situation, he can hold down the fort for a half. If you’re down to your #3 QB for any extended period of time you’re sunk anyway.

  23. 23 iskar36 said at 10:25 PM on August 20th, 2012:

Kafka doesn’t exactly have upside either though. He doesn’t project as a player who has starting potential. He has a weak arm. He hasn’t shown that he can consistently make good decisions in our offense. Edwards at the very least has shown he can start in the NFL. He obviously hasn’t proven he knows our offense and can carry us if both Vick and Foles go down, but frankly, Kafka has NEVER shown that he could carry an NFL offense.

  24. 24 Cafone said at 10:46 PM on August 20th, 2012:

Kafka has value as a future trade piece ala AJ Feeley/Kevin Kolb.

  25. 25 Jonathan Marlapudi said at 10:52 PM on August 20th, 2012:

doubtful he hasn’t showed anything yet. Feeley had a few wins under his belt, and kolb even had a few player of the week awards.

  26. 26 Cafone said at 11:29 PM on August 20th, 2012:

And those guys would have never been heard of if we didn’t have quarterbacks that got hurt. And unfortunately we still have a #1 that is injury prone.

Kafka’s eventual value will be determined by the snaps he takes in the regular season when Vick goes down, not in preseason.

  27. 27 Jonathan Marlapudi said at 11:44 PM on August 20th, 2012:

but in the regular season kaftka hasn’t shown anything particulary impressive. He did ok against atlanta throwing the short intermediate stuff but he was pretty bad when they opened the offense up for him.

  28. 28 TommyLawlor said at 10:13 PM on August 20th, 2012:

Loving DJax tonight. Good catch on deep ball. Made tackle after INT. Caught RZ pass earlier. Doing the little things. Playing hard.

  29. 29 iskar36 said at 10:14 PM on August 20th, 2012:

Absolutely. He has had a solid game and you can see that he is making plays he didn’t make last season.

  35. 35 Corry said at 10:20 PM on August 20th, 2012:

He kind of reminds me of the Trainman from Matrix: Reloaded.

He looks kind of like Jon Heder (played Napoleon Dynamite) to me

Marsh has made a couple decent plays tonight,

  38. 38 TommyLawlor said at 10:26 PM on August 20th, 2012:

Yeah, I think he’s helped himself.

    plays fast

  44. 44 TommyLawlor said at 10:41 PM on August 20th, 2012:

That’s one impressive young RB. Big and fast. Runs N-S. I hope he’s able to get on the field a little this year.

  45. 45 TommyLawlor said at 10:42 PM on August 20th, 2012:

Great showing by Nick Foles tonight. Not only is he throwing the ball well, he just looks the part. He’s poised. Looks confident and calm. This guy is a rookie?

  46. 46 iskar36 said at 10:44 PM on August 20th, 2012:

I asked this earlier, but has Kafka ever had this level of success? I remember he had a few successful games last year, but I don’t remember it being this good and if I recall correctly, he was going up against 3rd stringers for the most part, but I could be remembering wrong.

  47. 47 Jonathan Marlapudi said at 11:16 PM on August 20th, 2012:

he’s fine throwing the short underneath stuff but he just doesn’t have the arm strength past 25-30. By that I mean he can’t aim or “laser” it in there

I didn’t watch the first half so I’m not sure how worried/mad/freaking out I should be, but is it possible to be worried about the team without completely dooming the season?

  51. 51 BC1968 said at 10:47 PM on August 20th, 2012:

We’re Eagles fans, it goes without saying.

  52. 52 goeagles55 said at 10:44 PM on August 20th, 2012:

Besides Foles, I’d say Marsh, DRC, and Kendricks have all looked good.

  53. 53 BC1968 said at 10:51 PM on August 20th, 2012:

By the way, love the new commenting system, it’s new to me anyways, wasn’t really here for the last game. When I say wasn’t really here, I may have logged on but I don’t remember.

  54. 54 Scott J said at 10:52 PM on August 20th, 2012:

Are we seeing the future of the Eagles in Foles and Brown?

  55. 55 Joshua Pringle said at 11:01 PM on August 20th, 2012:

Except for Lesean McCoy. Maybe you mean the future Cardinals backfield?

  56. 56 aub32 said at 10:54 PM on August 20th, 2012:

Anyone else get the feeling that Gilyard is pushing out McNutt for a roster spot? Also, Marsh has been impressive, but I wonder how much of that is going against lesser competition.

  57. 57 iskar36 said at 10:55 PM on August 20th, 2012:

McNutt has not done anything in the PS games to earn a spot. I didn’t go to any of training camp, but from what I read in reports, he had a good start once pads went on, but then was not talked about often after a solid start.

  58. 58 aub32 said at 10:56 PM on August 20th, 2012:

I went once and he was basically invisible. Did see Gilyard do some nice things though.

  59. 59 iskar36 said at 10:58 PM on August 20th, 2012:

Wow, great job by Brown to stay up after getting hit low. Brown is having a great game.

  60. 60 iskar36 said at 10:59 PM on August 20th, 2012:

Polk with a nice run himself.

  61. 61 iskar36 said at 11:05 PM on August 20th, 2012:

Henry has done a good job at pinning the Pats inside the twenty on his two tries so far, but outside of his one touchback, McBriar did not have a bad night either.

  62. 62 TommyLawlor said at 11:08 PM on August 20th, 2012:

Good to see both guys with positives. That’s what you want in a roster battle.

  63. 63 Jonathan Marlapudi said at 11:11 PM on August 20th, 2012:

Both were pretty good today but I think McBriar did a better job pinning them down, Henry had that one where he kicked it out of the end zone in the first half on a short field.

  64. 64 iskar36 said at 11:13 PM on August 20th, 2012:

Great effort by Polk there. Was stopped way short and spun out and pushed forward for the first down.

  65. 65 A_T_G said at 11:13 PM on August 20th, 2012:

So, Polk won’t make it to the PS, will he?

  66. 66 TommyLawlor said at 11:21 PM on August 20th, 2012:

Domo says scouts have told him that Polk will be claimed. Lacks speed, but tough.

  67. 67 iskar36 said at 11:25 PM on August 20th, 2012:

I have my doubts that Polk will end up making the team, but the Eagles have kept up to 6 RBs in the past. In 2006, they had Brian Westbrook, Correll Buckhalter, Ryan Moats, Reno Mahe, Bruce Perry, and Thomas Tapeh all make the opening day roster. Like I said, I doubt Polk makes the roster, but it isn’t entirely unprecedented for them to keep more than 4 RBs.

  68. 68 Brandon Gleklen said at 11:29 PM on August 20th, 2012:

    That’s quite a precedent.

  69. 69 iskar36 said at 11:29 PM on August 20th, 2012:

I really hope the Eagles play there starters at least for a half against the Browns. It is clear the starters are still struggling and I think they need another game to get things corrected, particularly on defense.

  70. 70 FrenchEaglesFan said at 11:39 PM on August 20th, 2012:

It looked to me like the wide nine wasn’t used a lot tonight, the front four seemed much tighter on most snaps than last week. I think it showed: run defense was very good in my opinion.
