The Eagles Get a Big NT

Posted: May 10th, 2014 | Author: | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 247 Comments »

The Eagles spent their 7th round pick on NT Beau Allen from Wisconsin. Terrific pick.

Jerry Azzinaro went to various Pro Days working out players who could add late round depth for the DL. As of this morning, the backup NT was Damion Square. The coaches love Square for his intelligence and good technique, but he’s not big and he’s not athletic. That puts a major limit on him.

Allen is 6-2, 333. He can eat up blocks in the middle. He’s also able to make some plays here and there. He won’t be winning any beauty contests, though.

Yikes.

Not all of you are happy with Bennie Logan, but the Eagles like him as their NT. Allen is coming to Philly to challenge for a backup spot. The coaches will give him a chance to show what he can do, but don’t fall into the trap of thinking that Allen is going to replace Logan just because he is bigger.

The first challenge Allen has is to beat out Square. That’s far from a done deal. As I mentioned, the Eagles coaches love Square and his intangibles. Allen has to come in here and play his butt off. Allen is the kind of blue collar tough guy that I would expect to do that. If he does play well, Allen could be a big help. The Eagles need to rotate linemen more in 2014. Having a player who can get on the field and hold his own is important.

Chip Kelly mentioned that they tried to recruit Allen to Oregon so this is a guy that Jerry Azzinaro has some interest in. He is a good fit for the 2-gap style that Coach Azz likes to use.

Sometimes 7th round picks feel like dumb gambles. This feels like a very good value pick.

  12. 12 TommyLawlor said at 6:15 PM on May 10th, 2014:

You need 15 OL in camp. That gives you 3 different O-lines. Adding 3 to 4 guys is pretty normal.

  29. 29 ACViking said at 6:18 PM on May 10th, 2014:

During Kelly’s last presser, did he say the Eagles would bring in another QB — as long as he fits certain criteria (whatever those may be)?

Wyoming’s Brett Smith has 10″ hands. So that’s a start for him.

  30. 30 TommyLawlor said at 6:28 PM on May 10th, 2014:

Hi Tommy, I think you said you were going to watch the draft from home. Are you sure you weren’t at Chip Kelly’s press conference? I figured I would watch his press conferences and in the background someone is saying Kelvin Benjamin was a bad pick and didn’t like him. Made me think of your comments about how you didn’t want him (I agreed). 1:40 mark of the 1st round press conference if you’re interested, but I’m sure you already heard it.

Anyways, thanks for your coverage. I enjoy your site.

Very true…Ed was quiet this past year, but the year before he was a playmaking force…didn’t expect him to get out of round 3-4.. Getting him in the 5th is nice value

  42. 42 ACViking said at 6:43 PM on May 10th, 2014:

In two years, Birds could have two 5th Rd picks playing safety. And both have some talent. Just need polish.

  43. 43 GEAGLE said at 6:48 PM on May 10th, 2014:

Packers’ Ted Thompson takes home . . .

late-pick WRs Jared Abbredaris and Jeff Janis.

Along with 2nd Rd pick Devante Adams.

Thompson has a knack for finding WRs.

With the QBs Thompson’s had, maybe it’s hard to miss.

  49. 49 LiamGarrett said at 6:34 PM on May 10th, 2014:

I hope the Eags sign Michael Sam as an UDFA. We still need depth at OLB< and despite his horrible workouts, I'd be more than happy to have a kid with his kind of game-tap hang out on the practice squad for a year, and see what the team trainers can do to his athleticism.

  50. 50 GEAGLE said at 6:39 PM on May 10th, 2014:

    He isn’t good

  51. 51 LiamGarrett said at 6:48 PM on May 10th, 2014:

Yeah, it seems like a lot of people are coming to that terse conclusion very quickly, despite the fact that he was a consensus All-American and the SEC Defensive Player of the Year. We all know he isn’t as good as those accolades suggest, I totally get that, but all I’m talking about here is having him be a potential UDFA addition to the practice squad. That’s it. It seems irrational for people to reflexively dismiss that, after many of them just creamed over drafting Beau Allen.

  52. 52 Brazilnut said at 6:58 PM on May 10th, 2014:

He doesn’t fit in the 3-4 except as a situational pass rusher, he wouldn’t even make the team.

  53. 53 LiamGarrett said at 7:05 PM on May 10th, 2014:

He’s not a good fit, you’re right. Tommy wrote about that a while ago, I think. Considering his success on the field, though, and what a high-character kid he is, had no one taken a chance on him, I would have liked seeing if he could’ve defy the odds with us. (But, oh well. Good luck to him and the Rams.)

  54. 54 Brazilnut said at 7:18 PM on May 10th, 2014:

I just don’t see any position he would have a shot at making the team on. At best he could take Curry’s role but Curry is much better.

  55. 55 LiamGarrett said at 7:23 PM on May 10th, 2014:

    Good point.

  56. 56 BreakinAnklez said at 7:46 PM on May 10th, 2014:

Success on the field is also a little overblown. 9 sacks against Arkansas St, Vandy and Florida…three bad teams.

Probably ended up in great situation in STL where he can be that situational rusher behind Long and Quinn.

  57. 57 ACViking said at 6:35 PM on May 10th, 2014:

Bills GM Dough Whaley said he’s committed the Bills to winning now.

(Why else try to trade the same pick twice, a la George Allen . . . and the late oil baron, H.L. Hunt who sold about 495 percent of the stock in his first East Texas oil well to raise capital).

So why does Whaley draft UMiami OT Sentrel Henderson?

Talented, yes. But, it seems, absent a personality transplant, he’s a negative addition.

  59. 59 ACViking said at 6:48 PM on May 10th, 2014:

Boreland success came because this warthog ate up blocks, kept Borland clean so he can run around and torpedo fools…Logan is better than fans realize, and we haven’t seen the best of Bennie yet..but bye bye square, Beau just brought the beef to philly and I love it…
    ..
We really fortified our front 7 like I expected..a Added a warthog NT, a big, long 5tec in Hart and our 10sack plus ROLB….what an awesome draft..

  195. 195 Baloophi said at 7:31 PM on May 10th, 2014:

D3FB and I were talking about this earlier, but the influx of underclassmen and resultant “extra” undrafted talent means we could see some fringe, role-type vets lose jobs in the pre-season as teams look to stow more guys on the roster / practice squad.

Also, for those that go to the CFL, next year’s FA market, supplemental draft, and waiver-wire pick-up action could be interesting…

  196. 196 ACViking said at 7:36 PM on May 10th, 2014:

    B —

This draft creates some grist for the NFLPA.

The union’s job is to protect the jobs of *current* NFL players.

Not make it easier for college kids to take their jobs.

The NCAA — or whatever organization follows it — would love for the NFL and NFLPA to raise the age limit.

I think Goodell would be in favor . . . just another delay.

The CBA’s not up for several more years. But a side letter could accomplish the same thing.

    Just saying.

  197. 197 Baloophi said at 7:39 PM on May 10th, 2014:

    Oh for sure.

I think there might be some self-correction as UDFA horror stories trickle down (trickle down!) to college… but that could take just as long as the new CBA.

The risk calculus for underclassmen fearful of a career-ending injury should change when guys who were stars at their school left early and wind up on the practice squad of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats…

  209. 209 ACViking said at 7:54 PM on May 10th, 2014:

  211. 211 Baloophi said at 7:56 PM on May 10th, 2014:

AND he was a high school QB (and occasional one at Florida). He fits the “athlete” mold… potentially “football IQ” rubric.

Are he and Jordan Reed the same person?

  212. 212 Anders said at 7:59 PM on May 10th, 2014:

Both Reed and Burton are that undersized F TE type who can move all over the field.

Reed had a great rookie season last year before his concussion. Not sure why Burton never produced last year

  213. 213 Baloophi said at 8:06 PM on May 10th, 2014:

  215. 215 Baloophi said at 7:45 PM on May 10th, 2014:

We can start immediately. The problem (for us) is that we won’t hear officially who signed where for a while, so we have to stomach a lot of incorrect rumors.

Not a very compelling FG % at all.

  222. 222 Baloophi said at 7:47 PM on May 10th, 2014:

    You’re the best!

The “interesting” thing about UDFA is juggling your practice needs with simply trying to acquire as much talent as possible. Some guys you want simply because you like them, but some of the signings are more of the campy body / “we need a 1,000 receivers to run practice” type.

So, initially, what is everyone giving this draft for a grade. I’ll go ahead and give it a solid B-B+. We got more depth at several positions without reaching.

Don’t know about a grade, but to me it all depends on Smith. Can he provide what the Eagles really need?

    Solid draft…B+…a-

  233. 233 Mitchell said at 7:52 PM on May 10th, 2014:

Give me some Kenny Ladler and Loston action as UDFA and I’ll give a solid A- for sure.

Look at this mornings archive.. I wrote:
We have to get one player from each group:
    ..
    1) Jalen Watkins! Exum, Dontae Jphnson

    2) Urban, Hart, Josh Mauro
    ..
    3) Deandre Coleman, Shemar, Beau Allen

    4) C jones, Telvin, Tripp, pierre Louis

They got 3 players I wanted, and Ed Reynolds who I thought shouldn’t have gotten out of round 4….how can I not love this draft?
