The Eagles Get a Big NT
Posted: May 10th, 2014 | Author: Tommy Lawlor | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 247 Comments »The Eagles spent their 7th round pick on NT Beau Allen from Wisconsin. Terrific pick.
Jerry Azzinaro went to various Pro Days working out players who could add late round depth for the DL. As of this morning, the backup NT was Damion Square. The coaches love Square for his intelligence and good technique, but he’s not big and he’s not athletic. That puts a major limit on him.
Allen is 6-2, 333. He can eat up blocks in the middle. He’s also able to make some plays here and there. He won’t be winning any beauty contests, though.
Yikes.
Not all of you are happy with Bennie Logan, but the Eagles like him as their NT. Allen is coming to Philly to challenge for a backup spot. The coaches will give him a chance to show what he can do, but don’t fall into the trap of thinking that Allen is going to replace Logan just because he is bigger.
The first challenge Allen has is to beat out Square. That’s far from a done deal. As I mentioned, the Eagles coaches love Square and his intangibles. Allen has to come in here and play his butt off. Allen is the kind of blue collar tough guy that I would expect to do that. If he does play well, Allen could be a big help. The Eagles need to rotate linemen more in 2014. Having a player who can get on the field and hold his own is important.
Chip Kelly mentioned that they tried to recruit Allen to Oregon so this is a guy that Jerry Azzinaro has some interest in. He is a good fit for the 2-gap style that Coach Azz likes to use.
Sometimes 7th round picks feel like dumb gambles. This feels like a very good value pick.

Since the Eagles Draft is officially in the books I wanted to remind you that I need 3 more upvotes. Sincerely ze beau German
GE . . .
why do you need the upvotes, exactly?
i’m happy to give you as many as you want, but why?
My gf promised me that I can go to 6 Eagles home games this year when hitting the 1,000.
DONE.
I’ll get to work.
Cheers, mate. You guys can continue with the downvotes again. I won’t show her. Lol
So, 3 downvotes you say.
Thanks fans. With the help of your trust I just hit the 1,000 upvotes milestone. I feel truly blessed to be a part of this community, though I went undrafted for the 35th time in a row.
Does this help? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ji6r7J6L2bk
Lol. This is hilarious.
Blimey, 50 (!!!) up votes?!!! You guys are amazing!!!
Chip just said he would like too add 3-4 OL UDFA prospects. Is that allot or more the norm heading into camp Tommy?
You need 15 OL in camp. That gives you 3 different O-lines. Adding 3 to 4 guys is pretty normal.
Thank you good sir!
Maybe they can make Brandon Bair an OT again

(you can tell he’s not on a helmet phone, but nobody’s perfect…)
Some day I will get to use the helmet phone.
Some day…
There’s no doubt in my mind the helmet phone would cut out or start beeping or something.
laeagle is convinced it’s the actual phone used to draft Jon Harris…
Something about the faded plastic on the headpiece, or the bad varnish job on the wood baseplate. I felt the magic of reaching for the second coming of “Too Tall Jones” with every second that phone cupped my ear…
He certainly looks the part, but his tape against OSU won’t win him many admirers.
I don’t have kids, and therefore no daughter, but if I had to sketch out the guy I’d least like her to introduce as her first boyfriend, it would look like Beau Allen. Ironic his name is “Beau.”
Well, I guess technically it’d be a tie with this guy:
Do you have a shot-gun?
Here in the South, it’s required for all fathers who have daughters.
I bought a used one. I didn’t ask on what, though.
By the way . . . my daughter wouldn’t be allowed out of the house if that was the guy.
I don’t have a shotgun… but as my wife is from the South, I was very nervous meeting her father.
As a native of “South” Jersey, it was an easy transition.
Ha! I actually just finished watching this series yesterday…
I was wondering where you were!
I’ve been reading the posts, but avoiding the speculation in the comments until something official actually started happening…
That is a considered, mature, and reasonable approach. What are you doing on this site?
During Kelly’s last presser, did he say the Eagles would bring in another QB — as long as he fits certain criteria (whatever those may be)?
Wyoming’s Brett Smith has 10″ hands. So that’s a start for him.
Smith would be a good addition. Will he go undrafted?
T-Law:
I like Barkley. Want to see him succeed.
But I’d love to see a young kid like Smith in the mix.
If he gets past through the last 14 picks (as of this writing).
I don’t mind Allen. As long as he catches 83 beaus for 1,333 yards and 10 TDs this year. Oh wait…
You must have hit your target by now.
Let us know.
Yes. I don’t mind the up votes though. Feels good. 🙂
Allen..?
Hi Tommy, I think you said you were going to watch the draft from home. Are you sure you weren’t at Chip Kelly’s press conference? I figured I would watch his press conferences and in the background someone is saying Kelvin Benjamin was a bad pick and didn’t like him. Made me think of your comments about how you didn’t want him (I agreed). 1:40 mark of the 1st round press conference if you’re interested, but I’m sure you already heard it.
Anyways, thanks for your coverage. I enjoy your site.
That wasn’t me. Those are certainly my thoughts, though.
Beau instantly becomes my favorite “Allen” on our defense…
That may be short-lived, now that Mr. Ed’s on the team.
Very true…Ed was quiet this past year, but the year before he was a playmaking force…didn’t expect him to get out of round 3-4.. Getting him in the 5th is nice value
Wrote earlier I think ER’s a player.
In two years, Birds could have two 5th Rd picks playing safety. And both have some talent. Just need polish.
I really view him similar to Nate when he was coming out. Nate was a promising prospect pre knee surgery
Packers’ Ted Thompson takes home . . .
late-pick WRs Jared Abbredaris and Jeff Janis.
Along with 2nd Rd pick Devante Adams.
Thompson has a knack for finding WRs.
With the QBs Thompson’s had, maybe it’s hard to miss.
yeah… and janis went to the same school tood herremens went to.. lol..
but yeah they are good at finding WRs..
but i like what the steelers did more. adding Dri and Bryant. thats good for them. They have proven to be able to develope some WRs.. antonio brown and emanual sanders (even mike wallace).. never expected anything out of them
Point well taken.
Question, if Chip nails another draft like last years. How long till players start getting labeled as ‘Chip guys’ much like ‘Belicheck guys’ all the media loves talking about pre draft?
Is it weird to feel like a ‘Chip guy’ yourself… Asking for a friend
I hope the Eags sign Michael Sam as an UDFA. We still need depth at OLB< and despite his horrible workouts, I'd be more than happy to have a kid with his kind of game-tap hang out on the practice squad for a year, and see what the team trainers can do to his athleticism.
He isn’t good
Yeah, it seems like a lot of people are coming to that terse conclusion very quickly, despite the fact that he was a consensus All-American and the SEC Defensive Player of the Year. We all know he isn’t as good as those accolades suggest, I totally get that, but all I’m talking about here is having him be a potential UDFA addition to the practice squad. That’s it. It seems irrational for people to reflexively dismiss that, after many of them just creamed over drafting Beau Allen.
He doesn’t fit in the 3-4 except as a situational pass rusher, he wouldn’t even make the team.
He’s not a good fit, you’re right. Tommy wrote about that a while ago, I think. Considering his success on the field, though, and what a high-character kid he is, had no one taken a chance on him, I would have liked seeing if he could’ve defy the odds with us. (But, oh well. Good luck to him and the Rams.)
I just don’t see any position he would have a shot at making the team on. At best he could take Curry’s role but Curry is much better.
Good point.
Success on the field is also a little overblown. 9 sacks against Arkansas St, Vandy and Florida…three bad teams.
Probably ended up in great situation in STL where he can be that situational rusher behind Long and Quinn.
Bills GM Dough Whaley said he’s committed the Bills to winning now.
(Why else try to trade the same pick twice, a la George Allen . . . and the late oil baron, H.L. Hunt who sold about 495 percent of the stock in his first East Texas oil well to raise capital).
So why does Whaley draft UMiami OT Sentrel Henderson?
Talented, yes. But, it seems, absent a personality transplant, he’s a negative addition.
Wish the first gay athlete would have been a top 10 process….with a fringe prospect like Sam, I feel like anyway it goes, people will say it’s because of his sexuality…it would have been much easier if the first openly gay player was a top prospect…now if you invite sam to camp, and he doesn’t make the team, idiots will scream bloody inequality..,
I think, at this point, the Sam-is-gay-etc. story is an excuse for lazy writers — whether political or sports — to submit 400 words.
The kid gets props for being comfortable in his own skin. Which takes some people a lifetime.
Extremely impressive young man
Beau spells his name wrong. its Bo. B-o.
het is certinly far from a beaut tho.. lol
Friggin love this young Warthog…I thought we would have looked to Coleman first and sign baeu as a UDFA, but I have no problem drafting this kid. Boreland success came because this warthog ate up blocks, kept Borland clean so he can run around and torpedo fools…Logan is better than fans realize, and we haven’t seen the best of Bennie yet..but bye bye square, Beau just brought the beef to philly and I love it…
..
We really fortified our front 7 like I expected..a Added a warthog NT, a big, long 5tec in Hart and our 10sack plus ROLB….what an awesome draft..
DE Michael Sam . . . .
Wherever he lands, I hope the talk-radio people — the political people, no less than the sports people — just leave the whole, tired issue of “oh my god, what if he’s cut . . . the ACLU will try to shut down the NFL”- talking point alone.
Let the kid rise or fall on the field. Period.
It’s painful to listen to sports radio people talk about social issues. They need to stick to sports.
Generally, yes.
And, with this whole story stale as a month-old baguette, this is one of those times.
It’s better hearing them talk about political issues, because they are pathetically clueless about the eagles..
..l
All day I have to hear them shit on Marcus because we passed on Dennard? That midget corner wasn’t even on our damn board…uneducated dopes shouldn’t be allowed to talk eagles..
What is up with rutgers WR brandon coleman?
Knee injury from a year or so back.
Apparently, some folks advised him not to play this year for health reasons.
Still a problem, apparently.
Wow!
it think the saints signed coleman
At this point, I bet Herremans is feeling pretty good about things.
So is Alex Henery, I imagine.
Yes, but that’s just the weed talking.
Then Christian Jones would have fit right in here
Oh I think Christian Jones would be living in Herremans’s van…
If for some crazy reason we had kept Nnamdi, lunch-time in the parking lot could be Nnamdi eating in his car and nodding awkwardly as half the team climbed into Todd’s van.
Who’s to say he’s not already?
He’s got plans to lay down some new carpet on the ceiling.
ribs hurting
Isn’t that Vincent, from Beauty and the Beast?
beau and the beast.
seriously tho.. Why is Beau pronouced as Bo? tommy write a post about that.
Biggest questions still left unanswered…who’s our Backup RB? And, who’s gonna challenge Herremans?
GEAGLE . . .
Your guy, S Jonathon Dowling to the Raiders.
The spirit of Al Davis lives on in Oakland.
Those pricks took my late round safety last year dexter McCoil…wtf..tired of losing safety prospects to them lol
Ahmad Dixon just went… there’s another early mock star. I remember seeing him in the second round.
I’m sure I took him myself in one of my 15,000 Fanspeak trials.
Rams draft Michael Sam . . . to compete for a job where St. Louis has two of their best players.
Hope the kid kicks ass.
They should’ve taken him at 250… 249 was a reach.
but they risked drafting a center in front of him. less value.
I had a feeling that Jeff Fisher would end up taking Sam
Exactly.
Talk about a solid coach. Won’t give a damn about what people say.
And he won’t let a circus come to town.
Good for him. I’m happy he got drafted
Did Lyerla, Lokombo or Avery Patterson get drafted? Or will those ducks migrate to our practice squad? What about Christian jones?
none of them drafted.
character a problem for two.
size maybe for the other two.
Wow…practice squad? Yes please!!
I’m on board.
Lyerla and Jones for sure.
likely won’t happen if the 6 guys selected are any barometer
Lokombo is a good kid..can really run..I’d bring him into camp and see if he can be a subpackage cover LB
forgot about BL.
but he seems like the former UO linebacker picked up after the ‘phins cut him. (Not Jordan)
Kadu
6 picks still left
If Jones doesn’t get drafted should he be a UDFA priority for the Eagles?
Hope so
Agree, the one team I would fear going after Jones would be the Bengals–Marvin Lewis appears to get the most out of players with serious off field concerns–but they already have a monster at ILB/MLB in Burfict (another reclamation project).
That’s a pretty good call.. Lovie too
Just saw the Ed Reynolds interview on PE. His favorites were Jack Tatum and Ronnie Lott. He loved Dawk too. This guy likes to HIT!!
Hopefully he’s never sitting to my left at a blackjack table…
Hit me again baby!
“Hit me baby one more time”-scholarly poet known as Brittany spears
Looking up to Jack Tatum sheds a lot of light of light on the ejection Reynolds received for targeting
47-R:
Tatum? That’s when football was really football.
Tatum was from Passaic, NJ.
Known as the “Assassin”
I really miss those days but I understand the human tragedy that comes from such hits.
The tragic story of Daryl Stingley.
True enough.
Yeah, on film he lowers his head on a QB sack. Then flagged for targeting. This will cost him big dollars and suspension in the NFL.
“Hey, tommy! i think you’re a terrific pick too!”
West Texas A&M DE Ethan Westbrooks . . . showed some edge speed in the Shrine game. Like to see him here.
Built like a ROLB.
The kind the Steelers built their defense on in the late ’90s/early ’00s
When do UDFA news start coming in on when they sign them? Monday? Today? Sunday? So many questions
up to the teams, i think.
but only after the contracts have been approved by the league office.
so tomorrow morning?
but rumors will be flying tonight.
Today I think
Low-life Cowboys draft Oregon CB Terrence Mitchell.
Looking for tips on how to play against Kelly’s offense, no doubt.
Ugh…I wanted him as UDFA figured he came off the board a while ago
Rotten sobs. I hope we crush them this year – just keep scoring again, and again, and again.
We will Embarress them
Well said.
have you been imbibing today?
or riding the wave from friday night?
As usual, I’ve been fueled by Newman’s Own Special Blend Medium Roast Coffee – Extra Bold. (As ROD RODDY) Offering a bold yet refined flavor thanks to a blend of medium and dark roasts. That’s Newman’s Own, Special Blend Medium Roast Coffee.
Smallwood is gone. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s this years Burfict.
Falcons get S.Dakota Rush OLB Tyler Starr.
Thought the Birds might have liked him as a RFA. Short arms, though. But some good film.
Liked him
UTexas Guard Trey Hopkins . . . expect a phone call from Stoutland — NOW
It’s probably for the best that Michael Sam wasn’t drafted as Mr. Irrelevant. That would’ve been an awkward thing for those outside the NFL sphere to grasp.
PLUS, he’d get a parade later…
Congrats, everyone! We made it!
Looks like we made it.
yes, indeed
Big props everyone!
I missed the last two rounds..let me know if any of these nAmes were drafted:
Kevin Pamphile OT
Biseko Lokombo LB
Avery Patterson S
Josh Mauro DE
Christian Jones LB
Colt Lyerla
Trey Hopkins
Urshel PSU
Deandre coleman
Pamphile, 5th Rd by Bucs (on trade up w/ Bills)
Urshel, Ravens in 6th w/ one of the 47 compensatory picks
L’Damien Washington?
Jackson Jeffcoat?
both available.
Nice!!
Mauro available… forgot to put him on my list above.
Wow…get him now!! Then again kind of redundant with Kruger/hart
Competition!
May the best giant slow guy win!
I want them all!!!!!!!
Re: NT position
Some complaints for passing on DNG (aka NT) Louis Nix.
Birds acquired Watkins and Hart by passing on Nix.
And still got Beau Allen late.
All in all . . . “it was the smart move.”
So did the Eagles trade Brandon Graham for three future 1st rounders in 2027 then?!
My UDFA list
Christian Jones
James Gayle
Brett Smith
Stephen Morris
L’Damian Washington
Brandon Coleman
Damien Williams
George Atkinson
Colt Lyeria
AC Leonard
Xavier Grimble
Antonio Richardson
James Stone
Austin Wentworth
Some interesting names still available:
DeAndre Coleman (DT, Cal)
Antonio Richardson (OT, Tennessee)
Adrian Hubbard (OLB, Alabama)
Christian Jones (LB, FSU)
Marcus Roberson (CB, Florida)
James Gayle (DE, Virginia)
Lucihiishshd Purifoy (CB, Florida)
Shayne Skov (LB, Stanford)
Craig Loston (S, LSU… like him)
Brandon Coleman (WR, UNJ)
Max Bullough (LB, Michigan State)
Gabe Ikard (C, Oklahoma)
Mike Davis (WR, Texas)
Jackson Jeffcoat (OLB, Texas)
Matt Patchan (OT, BC)
Dion Bailey (S, USC)
Kenny Ladler (S, Vandy)
ready for a call
Sigh… I’ll connect the helmet phone…
How about Craig Loston (S, LSU) and Kenny Ladler (S, Vandy)?
available.
both
LOL, I didn’t see Loston in your list and you typed Ladler faster than a speeding bullet.
Maybe we should sign you!
damn, Seattle already got Dion Bailey.
Bailey’s no Ed Reynolds.
Only 1 season at safety. More a box-safety type.
How WTF? Why would a safety be so excited to go there? Dude will never see the field
Wonder if there’s some Pete Carroll USC nonsense going on…
You mean, like offering money to him?
Like the same can’t be said about Kelly and the Oregon feeder system to the Eagles…
well sure… I really should’ve replied to GEAGLE’s “why?” response below.
Christian Jones . . . called the Bengals himself.
I kid
There’s a ton of guys left. I’m surprised some of them weren’t drafted.
1. Loaded draft
2. Injury problems we don’t know about
3. Character issues we never heard about
Mayock said there is an extra round and a half of kids that didn’t get drafted who woulda been 6th round picks last year
I believe it.
Marcus Smith in the ’13 draft? Top 15.
Matthews in ’13? Top 25. Easily
Smith would have gone off not long after Ezy Ansah
Matthews is better than Hopkins last year and he went in the first
Flip side . . . Lane Johnson in 2014?
Top 10.
Top 5?
Good call. Probably not.
Lane would have been fighting with Matthews for ATL pick
probably before Lewan
There are a ton guys still available. Any thoughts on undrafted CBs – Deion Belue, Sammy Seamster, Carington Byndum, or Loucheiz Purifoy?
Start with character.
Purifoy — no chance.
Don’t know what’s in the manilla folder of the others.
_____________
GEagle’s pointed out that he’d never take an Alabama-Saban CB. EVER.
Experience seems to bear that out.
So nix on Belue
Yeah NO CB who haven’t backpeddled since highschool.. Sounds like a good rule to me.
..
I’d like Pourifoy before it was reported that he is a police informant..probably not the best locker room guy….isn’t Carrington Tiny slot guy from Texas?
Carington is the UT slot guy he’s 5112 and 177lbs. Seamster is intriguing (6’1″, 200lbs) out of Mid-Ten St.
Rakim Cox villanova
there for the taking
Tough kid..5tec
What if Christian Jones goes unsigned after going undrafted? Will he go back to school and re-enter the draft next year again? Is that actually possible?
No way FSU would allow a criminal to play for them.
Ha!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He goes to the CFL and comes to Philly.
He may be in Arena League-2.
What a nightmare for that kid.
And smoking dope must have been the last straw for the NFL. There have to be many, many other problems.
Telvin Smith did the same thing before the Combine and was drafted.
No. NFL not like NBA
Toledo RB David Fluellen and Florida WR Trey Burton have agreed with the Eagles.
Thank you…figured we hear about a RB soon
Trey Burton is Mr. Versatility…
A slightly smaller James Casey?
Trey Burton isn’t good.
Well, he is an UDFA, so yeah…
Wow Fluellen is sloooooow. Lane Johnson could outrun him.
Fluellen ran a 6.9 3-cone on his pro-day . . . 6th best among RBs.
Otherwise, slow.
6.9 at his weight is very impressive.
D3FB and I were talking about this earlier, but the influx of underclassmen and resultant “extra” undrafted talent means we could see some fringe, role-type vets lose jobs in the pre-season as teams look to stow more guys on the roster / practice squad.
Also, for those that go to the CFL, next year’s FA market, supplemental draft, and waiver-wire pick-up action could be interesting…
B —
This draft creates some grist for the NFLPA.
The union’s job is to protect the jobs of *current* NFL players.
Not make it easier for college kids to take their jobs.
The NCAA — or whatever organization follows it — would love for the NFL and NFLPA to raise the age limit.
I think Goodell would be in favor . . . just another delay.
The CBA’s not up for several more years. But a side letter could accomplish the same thing.
Just saying.
Oh for sure.
I think there might be some self-correction as UDFA horror stories trickle down (trickle down!) to college… but that could take just as long as the new CBA.
The risk calculus for underclassmen fearful of a career-ending injury should change when guys who were stars at their school left early and wind up on the practice squad of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats…
did Marcus Roberson get drafted I am sure he did but I don’t remember
He did not.
yes because I am way more interested in him than Purifoy
Why don’t we take the whole Florida secondary and continue the competition at the professional level?
Purifoy and Roberson stink though.
I hate that Micheal Sam is this big story I have heard about 15 times in the last ten min
It could be worse. He could have been on that Malaysian flight…
“He won’t be winning any beauty contests, though.”
So I take it that you’re just not into redheads, eh, Tommy?
More of a big blonde type?
330lbs of angry warthog beef sounds beautiful to me 🙂
Trey Burton . . .
Besides being from UFlorida, why exactly did the Eagles sign him?
He is a move TE/WR like James Casey
Only weight 224lbs at the Combine.
seems awfully undersized.
Actually he is also in the same mold as former Gators Reed and Hernandez
AND he was a high school QB (and occasional one at Florida). He fits the “athlete” mold… potentially “football IQ” rubric.
Are he and Jordan Reed the same person?
Both Reed and Burton are that undersized F TE type who can move all over the field.
Reed had a great rookie season last year before his concussion. Not sure why Burton never produced last year
Methinks Muschamp is struggling to find an offensive coordinator he meshes with. Florida will always have access to fantastic athletes, what you do with them is a different matter.
So, now can we just start getting after UDFA’s or do we have to wait? Also, so pissed Jeff Janis got drafted by those packers.
We can start immediately. The problem (for us) is that we won’t hear officially who signed where for a while, so we have to stomach a lot of incorrect rumors.
thank you.
Mosher just said the Vandy kicker (Cary Spear) tweeted he signed with the Eagles.
Great name!
link to Spear’s stats.
he’s built like the Cowboys former KO specialist Dan Bailey (a bit shorter). 5’10” and almost 200lbs.
Lots of touchbacks. (lots of practice).
Not a very compelling FG % at all.
http://www.vucommodores.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/carey_spear_711883.html
Great sharing this DRAFT with all of you. I’ve been an ass at times and you let live through it and mature. I even learned a few things (when I was sober, of course.)
Now I can learn about UDFA. Looks like there may be diamonds in the rough just lying around.
Cheers duck focker 🙂
You’re the best!
The “interesting” thing about UDFA is juggling your practice needs with simply trying to acquire as much talent as possible. Some guys you want simply because you like them, but some of the signings are more of the campy body / “we need a 1,000 receivers to run practice” type.
We could use some OL depth…
Yeah more OL and Chip says he wants more Safeties.
You know the old saying, “Safety last!”
Did Loston or Ladler get drafted? There’s more depth right there. They both should have gone in the 4-5th.
Both available. And Bailey, though the word is he’s signed with Seattle.
There you go then. Hell, get’em both.
NEED MOAR OL AND SAFETIEZZZZZZZZZZZ
So, initially, what is everyone giving this draft for a grade. I’ll go ahead and give it a solid B-B+. We got more depth at several positions without reaching.
Don’t know about a grade, but to me it all depends on Smith. Can he provide what the Eagles really need?
Solid draft…B+…a-
Give me some Kenny Ladler and Loston action as UDFA and I’ll give a solid A- for sure.
Look at this mornings archive.. I wrote:
We have to get one player from each group:
..
1) Jalen Watkins! Exum, Dontae Jphnson
”
2) Urban, Hart, Josh Mauro
..
3) Deandre Coleman, Shemar, Beau Allen
…
4) C jones, Telvin, Tripp, pierre Louis
…
They got 3 players I wanted, and Ed Reynolds who I thought shouldn’t have gotten out of round 4….how can I not love this draft?
you are right, its was a good one.
Beau is waiting for you (courtesy of BGN)

I cant sleep now
I feel for that dock…
This is pornography.
Worse. It’s an obscenity . . . no matter what community you live in.
Safeties?
Purdue’s Rob Henry . . . converted QB.

just a suggestion
would be converted from QB

WR Quron Pratt
LOVE the name “Quron.”
Welcome to Philly day walker.
