PHI 7, ARZ 7 – 2nd Half

Ugly. Very ugly.

That wasn’t the 1st half I was expecting. The Eagles piled up 273 yards, which I didn’t expect. They only scored 7 points, which I didn’t expect. And so on.

The officiating is painful, for both teams. There have been 16 penalties, 9 on the Eagles.

The 2 big mistakes were a fumble by Josh Huff inside the ARZ 10-yard line and an INT in the end zone by Foles. The rookie made a sloppy mistake and didn’t protect the ball well enough. Foles forced the ball downfield. Huff was open on the play, but Cromartie was in position to undercut the route and make the play, which he did.

The Eagles should be winning this game. They aren’t due to the mistakes. They have to clean things up and play smarter in the 2nd half. This game is still there for the taking.

    I don’t get why we’re not running the ball more. Shady has 7 carries for 35 yards. They’ve been doing a decent job with the run.

    Odd 1st half. Felt like we outplayed both the Cards and the officiating crew.

    Just tighten a few things up, no more turnovers, and this game is ours.

    The refs are particularly of note. I love football, but it is more or less unwatchable when there’s a penalty flag thrown every other play.

    does that penalty have anything to do with the player that initiates contact? i saw our guy really laid into the WR… makes it seem less of a play from the WR.
    no clue if thats how it works, though

    I dont know the specifics to be honest, but if someone runs straight at you looking at you, you would generally try brace and hit him back, on first look the WR looked like he ran straight for CB without even looking back

    No replay is more revealing than a close up of a player running . . . so the viewer has absolutely no context regarding where the player is, who’s around him, or even which direction he’s going.

Bad turnovers by Foles and Huff, bad penalties that repeatedly short-circuited Eagles drives or prolonged Cardinals ones, bad playcalling by Chip Kelly in the game’s most crucial series, bad breakdowns by the defense allowing a Cardinals offense that couldn’t sustain drives all day to score two long TDs. Teams are supposed to play crisply coming out of the bye week but that didn’t happen today.

    There will certainly be lots of (irrational) doom and gloom around here this week, especially if the Cowboys win tomorrow. But there’s no sugarcoating the fact that this was a bad loss.

    1. John Brown appeared to beat the same coverage the Eagles had successfully used all day.

    2. Kelly, after Polk gained 9.9 yards in two carries inside the 10 yardline,
    (a) replaced him with a RB who’s not been nearly as effective as he was last season,
    (b) called a play that required McCoy to go laterally then straight because the Birds were in the shotgun, and
    (c) did NOT call a run behind Peters — who, in 2011, routinely collapsed entire defensive lines on short yardage plays.

    3. Why did Matthews JUMP on that last pass to make a body catch?
    If he puts his hands up he gives himself a chance to ensure his feet are in bounds.

    4. The Birds lost . . . so what. WHY?

    Huff fumbles inside the Cards’ 10 because he has the ball in the wrong arm.

    Foles throws a terrible INT deep inside Cards territory.

    Kendricks hardly played.

    The O-line is 2 players away from being much better.

    The Eagles have only 2 defensive starters from Dec. 2011. This team is
    still being reconstructed. (7 starters on offense from 2011.)

    And if Matthews just catches the last pass with his hands . . . well, the Birds win.

    The Eagles will continue to get better.

    Kelly called 280 running plays vs. 240 passes (att + sacks) — for an avg of 35 runs/game vs. 30 passes/game.

    The percentage was 54-46 percent run-to-pass ratio.

    Kelly’s called 191 rushes vs. 306 passes — an avg of 28 runs/game vs. 44 passes/game.

    The play calling this year shows a 39-61 percent run-to-pass ratio.

    I’m sure Kelly has a good reason for what he calls.

    But the stark difference in the run-to-pass numbers from last year to this year is pretty remarkable.
