Chip Kelly changed a lot when he took over the Eagles and arguably the biggest difference is how he handles injuries. Andy Reid was open and detailed with his injury information. Chip Kelly says as little as possible. He doesn’t even meet with the medical staff prior to the media. This probably isn’t an accident. Kelly can then say “I don’t know anything because I haven’t met with the medical staff yet.” This drives the media nuts. They have readers/listeners/viewers who want updates and there just isn’t good info to give out.

If Kelly really thinks this gives the Eagles a competitive advantage, I guess I’m okay with it. But it is annoying not knowing what is going on with the players.

Jeff McLane wrote about Kelly and injuries in a recent piece.

The one thing I do like is the way Kelly is hands-off with injuries. He likes to say “Just tell me who can go and who can’t.” Coaches love to micro-manage things, some which can’t be controlled. Kelly is smart enough not to waste time on that. He lets the medical staff spend their time on the injured players. Kelly focuses on the healthy ones.

Chip Wagon did a phenomenal post on the Eagles Red Zone woes. This is absolutely must-read material.

As they show, there have been individual breakdowns all over the place.

* poor throws

* missed blocks

* wrong routes

* dropped passes

The potential is there. The Eagles must simply execute better. If the Eagles can start to click in the Red Zone, this team can become really good.

Last year the Eagles were 13th in RZ efficiency. This year they are 32nd. That is simply unacceptable for a team with this many weapons.

I’m curious to see whether David Molk or Julian Vandervelde will be active Sunday. It sounds like Jason Kelce will start at C. Molk has played a lot this year and got better each week. Does the staff like him or Vandy more? One x-factor could be that Vandy has experience at both G and C. Molk is more of a pure C, although he did fill in at LG earlier in the season.

* * * * *

I hope the Eagles find someone at PR besides Jeremy Maclin. Darren Sproles is planning to play and be the primary PR, but the Eagles need a good plan in case he can’t go or gets hurt again. Maclin was a mess last week. He caught the ball on the bounce multiple times, which is a disaster waiting to happen.

At the very least, you need someone to make a clean catch and secure the ball. Maclin was way too erratic last week. The Eagles need to find a better option for the next times Sproles is out.

* * * * *

Riley Cooper just had his best game of the year last week, 5 catches for 88 yards. He delivered his first big play of the year as well. Last year Cooper played better in the second half of the season than in the first. I think a lot of that was due to the switch from Vick to Foles, but it will be interesting to see if Cooper is better down the stretch than he was in the beginning of this year. He got off to a slow start. While Cooper isn’t anything special, he does seem to have good chemistry with Foles and the Eagles need him to play well this year.

I said it before last week’s game and I will say it again: Maclin looks lost at PR and if the Eagles don’t find a proper backup plan it could cost us a game down the stretch. Greg Lewis, any one?!

I think he has the physical tools to do it, but i can see him muffing the punt or trying to hard for that extra yard and fumbling. I think he will start to.put it all together soon. Before the fumble he looked really good on that play.

I lovrd J.R. Reed. On KR he ran fast and hard once he found a lane. Was not afraid of contact. Remember that hit he put on Moss? Shame what happened to him. After that injury he just wasnt the same. Was really high on him. Damn fences. 5 years ago we were tossing a football in the street. Ball went over one of those metal fences that have those spear head looking things on top. My friend climbed over it to get the ball. Tossed the ball back to us, and when he went to climb back over he slipped and the point went in between his ribs. It was horrible. Will never forget the screaming. Moral of story, dont hop fences unless you really really need to.

Good ole Mahe. Lol he wouldnt move the ball anywhere but at least you werent expecting a complete disaster on every return. I remember defensive linemen running him down on some returns.

There seems to be an inferred deceptiveness on Kelly’s part, while his stock answer “I haven’t spoken to the medical staff,” may actually be the truth. Kelly doesn’t have enough hours in the day, as it is, to fine-tune every last variable to his team’s advantage, and, sure, he’s going to get the full story before any outsiders, but contemplating the what-ifs doesn’t seem like his thing.

  15. 15 T_S_O_P said at 11:26 AM on November 1st, 2014:

That’s a great piece by Chip wagon. Part of the fan base say it’s Foles fault. Others say it’s Coopers fault. And yet others(mostly me) blame Huff. It appears, we’re all right. For the Eagles to be considered serious contenders, they need to hit on ALL cylinders. “All cylinders” meaning Foles/Shady/wr’s etc. need to be better.

  23. 23 ian_no_2 said at 2:51 PM on November 1st, 2014:

I don’t think Boykin’s other responsibilities are the reason for him not returning.. they may be more concerned about practice reps, holding on to the ball, etc. I would like to see him get a chance given that he’s prepped for it… some great moves in college.

  27. 27 wee2424 said at 6:50 PM on November 1st, 2014:

Never really thought about it for some reason but it does seem as though he would be a good PR. But yeah, as far as his other responsibilities he is only on feild for less then 50% of defensive snaps. He does excel as a gunner durring KO, but i dont think that would be enough snaps to keep him away from PR duty. I think possibly the real reason as to why he isnt doing it is because we really cant afford to have him injured.

  28. 28 xeynon said at 2:39 PM on November 1st, 2014:

I find it amusing and ironic that the same media who complained for years about Reid leading off every press conference by reciting a litany of injury updates are now complaining that Chip doesn’t provide enough information on that score. Consistency, people!

  29. 29 ian_no_2 said at 2:49 PM on November 1st, 2014:

I’d like to see more of Molk at guard. Based on the three film watching game reviewers, Molk’s game at LG was as good as the best of Tobin and Kelly and better than Gardner in the regular season. Tobin and Gardner have done well in preseason but not so well against ones when the games count. Since Molk first got his feet wet at LG he’s come a long way as a C. He has been the standout backup this year while the others are playing like backups. Who gets RG may be a big deal since Herremans may miss time and Kelly has done as well or better than Tobin or Gardner though not as good as Molk. Molk is 290 just like Tobin.

Kelly wants to coach for veteran leaders who wants the practices to be hard but when a guy’s health in danger won’t force him out there. That can help re-sign guys and get free agents. He has every right to draw an implicit contrast to the mess they have in Dallas (an org that also has terrible cap management).

It would be funny if Lurie had a mock presser where he chided Kelce, Mathis, and Sproles as being wimpy, yelleh, china dolls, etc. and to go out there and deal with the pain, but maybe it’s better not to give the Dallas club any bulletin board material.

  30. 30 EagleNebula said at 5:33 PM on November 1st, 2014:

I Am not sure they should consider using Molk at guard until they are certain Kelce is 100% and/or Vandervalde is ready to be back up center. But I thought the same thing initially.

  31. 31 ian_no_2 said at 9:43 AM on November 2nd, 2014:

If Kelce goes down, Molk would be all warmed up to switch over to where he’s more familiar.

  32. 32 wee2424 said at 6:45 PM on November 1st, 2014:

Lol i dont want to see a 1 armed Herremans going against Watt when he slides to the inside yet alone anyone else. Wont suprise me if Watt slides inside more or loops to the inside alot on stunts to take advantage of a hurt Herremans or the young guys. Im expecting Celek to stay in blocking even more then ussual, and Shady trying to help with alot of chip blocks.

  33. 33 GEAGLE said at 5:55 PM on November 1st, 2014:

Waited long enough, time to talk Texans..
    ..
4th ranked run defense needs to have a good showing against Foster, not allowing them to hand the ball off to him all game. We must be sound in our assignments becasemFoster is a very patient runner and sets up his blockers as well as any RB…
    ..
force Fitzpatrik to make some plays….one thing that HAS to CHANGE, is our defensive backs need to start turning around and seeing the ball…as long as our corners continue to put their back to the QB on film, opponents are going to keep taking shots down field and testing them….. Keep Hopings and Andre from getting behind our defense and we will be fine this week

    Offensively:
    1) no breakdowns against Watt…he will win his matchups enough on his own, we can’t help him with mistakes in our blocking assignments..
    ..
    2) Their NT “Grease” aka Ryan Pickett is a big man, if we can use some tempo against him we,can wear him down, don’t let him sub out and he et becomes a winded liability, but we have to get our run game going for that…

This weeks PIGEONS aka defenders to pick on:
    1) CB Kareem Jackson,,,we can go at him all day long,
    ..
    2) LB Brian Cushing, playing thru a bum knee, Laveon Bell was able to run away from him, I’m sure shady and sproles can leave him in the dust.love to get him matched Up against our backs in pass coverage.
    ..
3)’DJMSwearinger..very aggressive safety. he won’t shut up, he will talk trash all day,,can’t let him aggrivate us and force us into dumb penalties..if we can get the run game going we can suck him right up with our play action and take shots over top of their defense.
    ..
    4) RT is suspect…Barwin is going to dominate and make him look like a revolving door this week
    ..
Their Sevondary is not good in coverage..we can throw at them all day, but guys like Huff have to play tough and secure the ball because their DBs are good at stripping players, forcing fumbles and turnovers,,
    ..
To lose this game, I assume we would have to lose the turnover margin.l.fortunately I expect us to force ATleast two turnovers, fumble and an INT against the Bearded Braniac Fitzpatrick…
    ..
Not an easy game, they provide some tough challenges…should be a tough Battle early, but I expect to pull away sooner or later.

Let’s just get thru this game injury free, having played better then the week before. It’s time to go on a second half run like last year and improve a bit with each game..almost back to full strength, can’t wait to see the pint sized gridiron Gangsta, Sproles back in action

  34. 34 anon said at 6:56 PM on November 1st, 2014:

All about execution and not turning the ball over. Texans dbs are very succeptible to speed so it would be great to get the deep ball working. To me Texans are only limited by qb play so gotta make Fitzpatrick do more and foster do less. Their wrs are beasts but they can’t throw to themselves. Hopefully we can score early and make them one dimensional. That’s really when we play our best ball.

  35. 35 GEAGLE said at 9:49 PM on November 1st, 2014:

Oh we,can pass all over this secondary. But once we catch the ball, WRs and TE have to secure the ball, because they are good at knocking it free, but they give up tons of passing yards…. We can pass all over them like the Cardinals, but chip can get crazy and have FOles throw a millions times

Pretty certain that my defense will bring it this week and take out a lot of last weeks frustration on Fitz and the Texan offense… The difficulty of this game will come down to the offense… If the offense gets into a flow instead of sabatoging our tempo with injuries and turnovers and resembles its normal explosive self then we will run away with this game in the 3rd quarter and we get to practice playing with a lead… this Houston offense isn’t going to be able to put up 28 points…so if the offense has a rough day where we can’t geti into a Rythem it will be a dog fight when the scores are in the teens…but once we get into the upper 20s, this offense won’t be able to keep up…

Expecting an impressive showing against Arian Foster, and hitting and roughing up Fitzpatrik to the tune of ATleast 1 fumble and 1 INT

Sucks Mathis isnt playing. I’d be fascinated to see the best Guard and Watt battle it out…

I love OL and front 7 play…this game film should be a real treat for me.. Hopefully we win the damn game, because it’s so much easi for me to watch tape of the game all week when it’s a game we won

  70. 70 Avery Greene said at 10:55 PM on November 1st, 2014:

Do you tape the games or do you have the thing from the NFL that lets you watch games after the fact?

I have GameCenter and I’ll rewatch some Flyers games, but if they lose it’s tough to rewatch, much like tonight.

  71. 71 GEAGLE said at 7:24 AM on November 2nd, 2014:

If I’m watching tape on opponents, I typically download the torrent so I can rewind it and watch it a couple times….. and the other games that don’t have anything to do with who we are playing that week, I typically try to watch as many of the NFL network half hour to an hour condensed version of the replay throughout the week

  72. 72 Henly125 said at 11:19 PM on November 1st, 2014:

With Clowney doubtful, Watt will see some double teams, getting Kelce back is huge.

  73. 73 GEAGLE said at 7:42 AM on November 2nd, 2014:

Thankfully,, last thing we needed was Clowny having his breakout game against us

  74. 74 Media Mike said at 7:47 AM on November 2nd, 2014:

Clowney’s breakout game was supposed to be by killing loser Eli when Houston played the Giants. I’m still annoyed that he didn’t do so. He may now have his breakout game after their bye week at Cleveland when he ends Johhny Football’s life on a gimmick play that Manziel tries to run.

  76. 76 GEAGLE said at 7:42 AM on November 2nd, 2014:

True that!! Going to have to really enjoy These BRADY vs. Peyton battles, dont know how many more of these we will get to see

  77. 77 Media Mike said at 7:45 AM on November 2nd, 2014:

Assuming both teams continue to play well and neither guy suffers a career ending injury I thin you’ll get

today, 2015 reg season, 2016 reg season, playoffs at least once.

  78. 78 GEAGLE said at 8:23 AM on November 2nd, 2014:

That would be 20 career Battkes if I’m not mistaken… Right now BRADY won 10 battles
    Peyton has won 5

since they don’t cover each other I don’t think that tells us much.

Two of the greatest…record in head to head battles won’t change that…
    ..
Tho it’s kind of odd that BRADY won twice as many. Peyton has always been sorrounded with a bomb squad…brady had some years with questionable weapons to work with..

  81. 81 RobNE said at 8:31 AM on November 2nd, 2014:

I hear you but being here in NE all the Brady is the greatest and Peyton is a loser gets old. Belicheck is what, best coach ever? top 3? How important is Belicheck (or Chip to us) compared to QB? more important?

I think saying Brady is better b/c he won more is just not logical. I know you didn’t say that.

  82. 82 GEAGLE said at 8:39 AM on November 2nd, 2014:

God bless you waiving the Eagles flag in patriot country, bet Peyton gets no respect in your neck of the woods.. Be interesting to see a alternate universe where bellicek had Peyton instead of BRADY this entire time

So it seems Romo has two breaks in his transverse processes. Snap! I broke 2 in 1995. When it happened, I couldn’t really feel any pain in my back ( other injuries prevailed), but about 30 to 40 minutes after the incident, I had to visit the john; let’s just say my aim was restricted through lack of movement and jolts of pain. I was prescribed diazepam for a week, and during that week, I was pain free, high as a kite and less stiff, though far from spritely. Romo really should sit, before he finds even that too painful.

  84. 84 Media Mike said at 5:43 AM on November 2nd, 2014:

The general commentary coming out of that injury is that he should sit this week and next week.

  85. 85 GermanEagle said at 8:12 AM on November 2nd, 2014:

I am pretty sure Dr Jerry Jones doesn’t see any common sense. Expect Romo to play.

Thanks for sharing. This is the first time I ever heard of this injury in sports. I hear those transverse bones can bleed and iratate the tissue around it

Few hours left and we find out if we get to enjoy a Nate Allen-less eagles game!

Hopefully wolff has his eminem “8 mile moment” steps up and plays his way out of the dog house…

This is one of the few opportunities for hope of getting decent safety play. If Wolff can’t Stake his claim to that safety spot with some inspired play today, all hope will be lost and we have to re sign ourselves to the fact that Nate wIll start the rest of the season….

Be SOOO awesome to see wolff fly around, making plays today…Probably our last hope for safety help the rest of this year

Assuming Jalen watkins dresses today…he played the gunner role like a beast two games ago, Curious to see him play some more ST

Big Big BIg game this week. I don’t want to lose two games in a row all season. Take out last weeks heartbreak on the texans

This is also true…I expect us to win every single division game this year. Put our rivals in their place! The Titans game has stuck out in my mind since schedule released… If we go into that game on a nice winnng streak, I worry that the Titans game, became this years “vIkings letdown game”
    ….
Mosher sums up the Wolff mystery perfectly… “Last year, before the injury, Wolff was one of the real bright spots of the defense. A year later and now he is a nobody on the defense”…. Def been a fall from grace.
    ..
Today’s PC world is forcing change in the NFL Lke all the concussion protocol amd rule changes…but I think an old school football mindset still exists wher the “won’t play injured” label is still a Scarlett letter as far as NFL coaches amd teammates are concerned… I worry that, is what’s killing Wolffs standing on the team..

Big discrepancy between what wolff says, and what chip says about wolff…THOSE two are NOT on the same page. Wish media would ask billy straight shooter Davis more about wolff
    ..
All the talent and physical ability to grow into our savior at safety…. Will his football mind, ever catch up to his body?

[…] Saturday Notebook – Iggles BlitzChip Kelly changed a lot when he took over the Eagles and arguably the biggest difference is how he handles injuries. […]

The Steelers are a bit swole after last week’s win over Indy. I have a feeling they lay an egg vs. Baltimore this week; but I think Big Ben gives you enough garbage time points to make it worth your while in fantasy.

  101. 101 GEAGLE said at 9:02 AM on November 2nd, 2014:

Arian Foster is a great test for our new 4th ranked run defense because you have to be really sounds and technical againsg foster and the Texans rushing attack Foster smooth runner, smart, very patient, sets up his blockers really well, so technique needs to be sharp this week, gap responsibilities needs to be sound….

This is one of those run games that love that zone stretch play…which means, Crucial to TODAYS battle is Barwin, COLE, BG setting the edge, not letting foster get outside, funneling everything to the inside where we can swarm on him…

Teams like to Gang up on stopping shady and forcing FOles to beat us… Well we need to force Fitzy the bearded Braniac to try and beat us…ESPECIALLY if it’s one of those days where Our offense is clicking.
    ..
Easiest way to win today, is our offense, executes early, puts up like 21 points in the first half in conjunction to keeping foster in check. We need to put Fitz in position where not only will he have to beat us, but he will have to press to score a lot to be able to beat us… If we put him in position where he needs to put up 28 to beat us, he will implode and we run away with this game. Forcehim to have to do too much, allowing our D to pin its ears back and go hunting!
