Catching On

I saw this on Twitter and was surprised by the stats.

Jeremy Maclin is having his best season.

Jordan Matthews is playing better than expected for a rookie.

Riley Cooper’s overall numbers are down, but he will have a career high in catches.

For comparison’s sake, the big 3 last year of DeSean, Coop and Avant combined for 167-2614-19. Those totals will all be exceeded this year, barring a major disaster. Explosive plays are down. Eagles pass catchers last year averaged 14.2 yards per catch. This year that is down at 11.9. Deep balls and big plays aren’t happening as much.

Chip Kelly recently explained that the Eagles are getting a lot more zone coverage. That means DBs play off and keep things in front of them. When receivers are getting open deep, the QBs aren’t seeing them or are off target.

If the Eagles can keep Maclin, the WRs could be very productive next year. Jordan Matthews will be a year wiser. Josh Huff will be more a part of the offense. And hopefully Riley Cooper would be playing better than this year. (no, that doesn’t mean only one dropped pass)

Ertz was a much bigger part of the offense this year. run game was much better too. QB numbers were way better. Hard to argue offense this year is better than last.

Especially considering Shady is well below his anticipated 2000 yard rushing output.

That’s why they’re seeing so much more zone, right?

Both QB and RB have been affected by multiple starts by Gardner, Tobin, and Molk. If you lose at the LOS, your offense isn’t going to look good.

I know, but I was really hoping for a historic HOF case building season from Shady.

Never mind only having one dropped pass for Cooper. I would settle for only having one dropped game-winning touchdown pass.

  10. 10 unhinged said at 8:04 AM on December 14th, 2014:

Throwing in front of coverage is harder on the QB because passing windows are smaller, and overthrows are often picks. Sanchez right now looks a little better than Foles at the short routes, but I think Foles will improve, and he has shown a capacity to pull the trigger if he sees single coverage long. Sanchez looks a bit shy on the long routes.

  11. 11 Media Mike said at 10:16 AM on December 14th, 2014:

Foles, hopefully, had time to take a step back and learn something while injured for the past 6 weeks………….. which end next Sunday.

  12. 12 GEAGLE said at 1:28 PM on December 14th, 2014:

He desnt have to learn anything. He needs to get healthy, and his run game and OL need to be effective…. His body was,too bruised, too banged up, to be able to sit in the pocket behind a mess of an OL and eat the hits that he could normally take to deliver the ball, which is why he was forced to do all that backpeddling. Obviously the bruises hurt to much for him to endure routine hits..and if you can’t take a hit, and your OL is a mess and you are trying to warrior thru it and stay in the game, obviously Yous probably won’t trust your OL, which leads to breakdown in mechanics..

I really really don’t worry about Nick. I know that bad times, and adversity won’t break him, I know youñg QB development is an up n down ROLLERCOASTER ride… But I absolutely believe this is a special kid, who wont let bad plays break him, and who we can count on to put in the work required to grow into a great player at the hardest position in all sports

  13. 13 Media Mike said at 8:21 AM on December 14th, 2014:

So the $64,000 (or 5 year / $60 million) question with Maclin is how much is he going to get paid and by whom.

His projected 91-1365-12 stat line represents a serious level of production. As one of the loudest Maclin haters from this past off-season’s Jackson debacle; I have to give Maclin a ton of credit for producing at this level.

So what’s that level of production worth?
I expect the following to be considerations for Maclin’s eventual deal
    – How much do the Eagles value WR in their system?
    – Is every bit of Maclin’s production in their system able to be replaced in the same way Jackson’s was replaced?
    – How much do the Eagles come up from their long term offer to Maclin that he refused this past off-season?
    – Once Dez, DT, and Cobb fail to hit the market; does Maclin create a bidding war for his services?
    – The WR tag is going to be at least $12 million; do the Eagles see Maclin as a $12 / year player and worthy of the tag?
    – By virtue of firing his agent; does Maclin signal there will be no easy and/or below market re-signing with the Eagles?
    – Can the Eagles improve as a team next year with Matthews, Cooper, Huff, and a player (maybe a cut and/or traded for Vincent Jackson) to named later as the WR corps?

This is going to be a very interesting off-season with a lot of things, but Maclin should be very interesting.

Me too. Sanchez has to step-up, as well as eliminating mistakes.

  20. 20 GEAGLE said at 1:08 PM on December 14th, 2014:

Sanchez vs, pathetic dallas D, is probably better than Romo against our front 7… And I don’t think much of Mark Sanchez, I just don’t think Romo has the athletic ability to be able to do what wilson did, escape or VISCIOUS,pass,Rush, but time, and find guys down field. EARLY IN the year Romo was able to evade some pass rush, but late in the season, all banged up, I simply don’t believe a 57yr old Romo, can run away and escape the wrath of Mykal Kendricks.
    ..
Our pass rush is too good at rushiñg as a cohesive unit, too disciplined in gap assignments… Notice the pass rush today, often they will rush as a cohesive unit and you see a OLB on each side of Romo, and DE’s in front of him to not allow him to step up in the pocket. Not only will our pass rush get to him. But our pass rush should be able to keep him in the pocket, mwhich means by the halftime we should have hit romo so much that he will see, ghosts in the second half and just dive to themground giving himself up any time he feels an eagle defender, close,by
    ..
Demarco Murray, struggles running against us more than he struggles against any other defense..

cary, usually has played Dez BRyant pretty tough
    ,..
Last time we played dallas Jenkins took Witten out of the game. Covered him closely to the point that romo didmt even, throw him A few, passes

We match up really well with this team. We can expose Ronald Leary and Doug free in pass protection. Their bread and butter stretch run play is designed to work against a 4-3 defense, no surprise they struggle to rexecute that play against ourm3-4’defense…

I see,our front 7 being TODAYS player of the game, I see dallas really struggling to put up points this week, where as we,can, beat dallas defense without asking much out of Sanchez. Our OL and run game are stout enough to put up 200 plus yRds against dallas weak defense…. Thinking the will be the game we see all 3’of our RBs go off on this soft, poor tackling cowboy defense

Thinking our run game alone should be able to our score the dallas offense against our front 7
    ….
Difference between these two teams is that our OL can open up holes against Dallas DL and get our runningbacks to the second level …where as the dallas,OL struggles with our DL. We do such a,good, job of taking on the blocks, shedding the block, and stonewalling the RB at the line of acrimage. Our DL is what will be tackling Murray, where as our OL will make, sure the Dallas DL doesn’t even touch shady… Opposing Linebackers shouDL be the first line of defense to get their hands on shady whch is dangerous since dallas LB are poor tacklers…,where as Murray can’t even make it past our Defensive lineman…

This isn’t about me thinking that we are a juggernaut rigjt, now that will steam roll any team in our path, my confidence in this matchup comes from me explaining in detail why the Cowboys OL and DL was being vastly over rated all year by clueless donkey media…..this isn’t about me,thinking the Eagles are ready to he world beaters this week. It’s about me Genuinly believing this cowboy team isn’t even close to our level
    .l
Plus, like I said yesterday, no chance n hell that a jerry jones built roster is going to have more heart, more Charecter, more toughness, more intelligence, more selflessness than a roster that Chip Kelly put together.

All we have to do, is play,to our potemtial today and we will have single handedly proved how dumb the media is, and how over rated Dallas has Been all year…

  21. 21 ICDogg said at 12:37 PM on December 14th, 2014:

I think there’s no question Dallas is going to approach the game differently. They will make some adjustments. The question will be how well we adjust to their new approach.

Of course if we can slam Romo on his back a couple of times none of this matters.

I’m expecting this to be like our “Bears game” late last, season!

  23. 23 Michael Winter Cho said at 11:31 AM on December 14th, 2014:

Hypothesis: Teams are stacking the box and daring the QB/WRs to beat them. The result is more throws to WRs and thus more yardage to WRs. Unfortunately, also drastically lower YPR and more turnovers. Overall, the league has played the Eagles correctly as the offense has gone from near the top of the league to mediocre. O-line injuries and, possibly, a downgrade in WR talent has contributed.

  24. 24 D3FB said at 11:37 AM on December 14th, 2014:

    Mediocre?

    4th in points
    5th in yards
    8th in pass
    7th in run

From a borderline historically great offense to just a very good one, sure but mediocre?

  25. 25 Michael Winter Cho said at 12:01 PM on December 14th, 2014:

Respectfully, I don’t see any use for conventional stats, because they disregard context. To me, it is efficiency that’s key. How much of these ranks are based on special teams, good D, and pace (pace, of course, would tend to inflate points/yards while at the same time helping the other team in the same way)? Advanced stats place the Eagles O as average. 16th in Football Outsiders (D is ranked 7th! Special Teams 1st!) advancedfootballanalytics.com has them as 14th for O.

  26. 26 Phits said at 12:28 PM on December 14th, 2014:

Unless the statistic(s) details each possession with a breakdown of each position, all stats are subjective. The eyeball test says that in spite of the injuries to the o-line and the stark decline in QB play (2 of our strongest suits from last season) we are as good, if not better, than last season. If nothing else Chip has demonstrated that his system will continue to produce in the absence of good QB play.

  27. 27 D3FB said at 2:00 PM on December 14th, 2014:

Exactly even advanced stats are subjective in the manner of what the designer of the stat chooses to include or exclude.

  28. 28 bill said at 11:42 AM on December 14th, 2014:

They stacked the box last year. The evidence that they’re playing zone and keeping the play in front of them says that they’re no longer as afraid of the run game as they were last year. Plus, watching games since SF says that they’re not stacking the box that much anymore, except for the really poor defenses that they played before SEA.

aomethng needs to change regarding the use of Darren Sproles by chip Kelly.
Not only is the low snap count for Sproles unacceptable, but the way we use him is also frustrating. I get that chip thinks Sproles can be a better RB than Sproles previous coaches, thought, but just because you think he can be a weapon running the ball, no reason why we have to abandon his threat as a reciever, since catching the ball is a strength and what made him have such a great career.
    ..
Sproles has to get more then 4 snaps in a game.. At the very least Darren should, get 7 touches per game, 3 runs and 4 passes and get an extra 7 snaps as a decoy since he commands so much defensive attention…putting Sproles on the field for only 4 plays is unacceptable, even if we didn’t get to run our usual insane amount of plays..

  40. 40 Ben said at 1:51 PM on December 14th, 2014:

Honestly, if our red zone O was better we’d probably only be a 2-loss team. The question I guess is why? I could understand when our line was beat up, but red zone O has been an issue for the Eagles even pre-kelly. We’d be putting up some *ridiculous* numbers if we could punch it in down there. Right now it’s just that we can score from 20+ and we get down there so much that we do well anyways (plus D and ST scores).

Is Red Zone O more scheme or do we just stop executing there?

Also, wouldn’t be unquestionable for us to improve secondary, re-sign Mac, get another new weapon at WR in the draft and get a Nick Foles that’s somewhere between last year and this year in terms of INTs.

…That would be a scary team.

  41. 41 ICDogg said at 1:52 PM on December 14th, 2014:

I don’t know… some of those stats are deceptive. For example in the last Cowboys game I think the Eagles let up on the gas a little bit, got conservative in the red zone to reduce the chance of a turnover when they were ahead.

  42. 42 Ben said at 3:41 PM on December 14th, 2014:

Very true. Probably did the same vs. St. Louis, Wash, NYG, Carolina potentially…. But even on the eye ball test, like the first half vs. the Cowboys last game, we could have been up by way more at half time. IIRC, we were up 20-7 and they had a chance to make it 20-14 before half despite complete domination by us.

  93. 93 anon said at 3:48 PM on December 14th, 2014:

More catches more yards, less athletic talent but a chain mover, though. Thought value was better. Like not better player but better value. Think ODB was better value at 14 or wherever he got picked. They’d be complete trash without cruz otherwise.

  94. 94 Mitchell said at 3:49 PM on December 14th, 2014:

Gotcha, I just watched ODJ and saw a “wow” factor. I can’t really explain it. It’s like something you just know.

    ..
What’s funny is bengals scored 30 and Dalton didn’t look much better than Johny, red rifle shooting blanks 14/24 117yards and 1 INT? THATS PATHETIC for a atarting QB with as many gMes as he has under his belt

If andrew Luck played in philly, i bet half our FANBASE would be down on him. He struggles almost evey other week, doesn’t play clean games, looks like crap throughut games, but at the end of games he gives his team a chance to win, just like FOles, and INDY Loves him for it
    ..
Let’s be honest, if FOles beat the Texans 17-10 like Luck did today, our fanbase would be complaining about the win smh

  135. 135 oreofestar said at 4:30 PM on December 14th, 2014:

I’m sorry I don’t hate Foles or anything I just think it fair to compare them because Luck can single handedly win games and we haven’t seen that from Foles this year, I’m not complaining I’m just tired of being in QB purgatory so I want THAT guy and that’s what I was hoping Foles would be, hopefully he can be

  136. 136 anon said at 4:35 PM on December 14th, 2014:

GTFOH with that comparison. Look at Luck’s numbers and look at Foles’. Does indy have one of the best RBs in the league? Best offensive minds? A decent defense.

Gtfo here with your 3rd grade level reading comprehension
    ,,,
Do you see me say FOles is better than Luck? FOles is just as good as Luck? I wasmt really comparing Qbs, I was comparing how dumb and ridiculuos our FANBASE is at evaluating youñg QBs…I wasn’t comparing the QB, I was comparing go fanbases perception of the QB’s you DONKEY!!!

I was pointing out that our fanbases a flat out dumb and has no clue how to judge youñg developing QB’s… We could switch FOLES for Luck, and I bet Indy fans would have LOVED FOLES leading them to 7-2 even if there was plenty adversity in the games… Lol funny how I rigjt a post about how dumb Eagles fans are, and you respond without even being able to comprehend lol
    ….
I uhhhh did FOles have a run game this year? Who had a worse OL than FOles?.. NO ONE! Not having an OL is the worst thng you could do to a QB
    .,
No where in my post does it say FOles is as good, or FOles is better, than Luck… You read my posts ever day, I’m sure yu have seem me say that I put Luck ahead of FOles because Luck has been able to win on par witj Nick, without having much of a run game

    I dont thnk

    ..
So exhausting of morons in this city wanting QBS who aren’t very good at reading defenses and completing actual passes…it’s like these donkeys want every attribute, except being able to throw accurately, when that should be the 1st, 2nd, 3rd priority when looking for a,QB

Yet when media discusses QB, they talk about how fast the run, how tall they are, how big their arm is…. When none of that crap really matters… The most important part of a QB is his brain and accuracy…
    ..
ATleast Kap is probably ahead of Bob Griffin

Getting on my nerves waiting for this night game

  142. 142 GEAGLE said at 5:06 PM on December 14th, 2014:

I kind of view this Cowboys as:
    .
If they come out tonight trying to establish the run right off the bat early in the game, I feel like that would mean they fear us, and knowing they may struggle to run aganst us, if they prefer to bang Demarco against our brick wall of q DL, I would view Garrett as being afraid of us, and him coaching just to try and keep the game close

If they have legit confidence in their team and their QB on 10 days rest, I feel like we would see them try to trick us and play action pass us early on 1st and 2nd down when we expect them to run….IF WE SEE THEM come out throwing, and play action passes instead of running it, it would concern me because I would interpret that as legit confidence and that they are setting the the tone to call an aggressive game and take it to us…. Even if this is the case, I expect our pass rush to be able to shut that crap down and them playing aggressive should mean some opportunities for turnovers allowing us to get off on a nice lead making them pay for their aggressive approach…

But if they come out Commited to the run, I’m Goimg to smile, kick my feet up. Spark something skunky and enjoy watching us jump out on a big lead taking advantage of Cox, CED and Bennie taking over the trenches early!!
