Tuesday Quick Update
Posted: January 20th, 2015 | Author: Tommy Lawlor | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 76 Comments »Today was insane. The weigh-in was from 830am-1030am. Then Jimmy Bama and I went over to Saucy Q BBQ for lunch. The North practiced from 12:15 to 2:15. Then we hopped in a car and drove over to Fairhope Stadium for the South practice from 2:30-4:30. We got back to Mobile at 6pm and went straight to Media Night, which just ended at 8pm CST.
I have a ton of notes and stories, but need time to write them.
Tyler Aston was kind enough to put together some of his thoughts on the weigh-in. Good stuff from him.
Here are some quick highlights from today.

I think @JimmyKempski & I convinced CB Quentin Rollins that being an Eagle is in his best interest. I might have scared off QB Bryce Petty

I’ll get my posts up as soon as I can. Just wanted to get something up quickly so I can get back to writing.

Boy is that the Geek Squad. Have fun boys and thanks!
That may have been the most useful Lew Bowen tweet of all time.
The best part about that picture is the thoughtful expression on Tommy’s face, complete with hand stroking chin.
Jimmy’s got one of those Surface Pro 3’s, it looks like, with the kickstand.
So? Tommy’s got a tablet too!
i did not think anyone actually bought those
He probably got it issued to him for work
I found this article interesting about what happened with Shaw. I can see where he is coming from. I think we have all been, not in this exact situation but caught in a lie none the less:
http://www.cbssports.com/collegefootball/eye-on-college-football/24803624/uscs-josh-shaw-opens-up-about-his-lie-and-what-really-happened
“Sheil, Tommy, Kempski, ESP,” rattled off a 43 year old man … who really should to get out more.
Won’t, but should.
“Hello, 9-1-1, the four of them have been spoted in Mobile.”
NFL has their draft profiles out for the 2015 draft class.
How about a quick caption competition?
You have until the next post goes up to express what Tommy is thinking in that picture.
Go.
Enough Megan, I have to scout. You’re going to have to wait until tonight.
Hmm. I wonder if I would look that good in compression shorts.
“compression shorts” is just a great combination of words. “Cellar door” be damned.
Hmm… that Saucy Q BBQ food tasted a lot better on the way down than on the way up.
He’s wondering if it is possible to have deeper thoughts than Jack Handy.
“I wonder If I could pull off Sheil’s fancy outfit? What color is that anyway? Mint? Spring Green? Paris Green? Paris is for lovers, I wonder what Megan is doing right now?”
how much stock do you put into measurables. Obviously CK is all over them and they’re supposed based on empirical data for successful players at those positions (right?). Do you think there’s a heavy correlation? What metrics (or intangibles) do you personally use to rank players.
Further, are there evaluators that you admire, and what types of things do they look at (if different) than what the organization looks at.
For me it’s really about film first and foremost. If a guy is wildly off on measureables (like Senquez Golson) I’m probably not going to invest much time in looking at him. For a guy like Kihaka who came in under 6’3 and with sub 32″ arms it’s going to ding him a bit for me (he’s going from a late 1/early 2 to just a 2nd rounder). Length is really important at OLB, it helps keep blockers off of you. I don’t think we are going to want another really short ILB (height and arm length help increase the difficulty of being thrown over).
There are certain measurable that a player had better be downright special to overcome. Corners that run 4.5 or worse. Tackles with >33″ arms, etc.
One guy I admire would probably be @starvingscout (Jordan Plocher) because of the volume and effort he puts into tape and the whole draft process. He has an entire 20 foot wall in his basement that he creates an actual “big board” on, and it’s really cool.
Another would be Kyle Crabs (@NDTScouting) because he created his own metric scale based off of everything from tape evaluation, to number of starts, whether a player was a team captain, as well as all the H/W/S stuff.
In general I respect most other draftniks who put in the time (assuming they have the base level knowledge to scout) and this tweet from Jordan kind of summarizes how I feel about both other people’s work and my own.

You know, I am finding this side conversation a little distracting. Do you really think this is the place to talk about football and prospects?
Getting her children ready for bed?
“Man. NJ.com flies Eliot Shorr-Parks down here, pays for his room and meals, AND lets him look at porn during practice???”
Is that a double-chin?? Man, I’ve got to get back on my pre-Christmas diet! Every other guy on this bench is so svelte.
Man, that Sheil looks about 14-years-old in that cool outfit. Btw, why am I the only one without sunglasses? No wonder Alex Flanagan did a double-take!
It IS ironic that a guy who runs a website that sells sunglasses is the only one without them. But maybe that’s because he received the in-home LASIK he also peddles online…
How about… “Nice bubble on that Johnny Knoxville character in front!”
“Do you think she’ll switch her name to Alex Flanagan-Lawlor?”
“I swear I smell Funyuns.”
“I wonder if Baloophi is violating the spirit of A_T_G’s caption competition right now by submitting more than one entry…”
Wow, meta-captioning. That is deep. I am going to need a few minutes to recover.
No way, No way. Tried it once, it doesn’t work. You get four guys all fighting over who wants to be Mr. Black. They all know each other, so nobody wants to back down. No way. I pick Jimmy… You’re Mr. Pink.

NFL has found that 11 of the Patriots footballs used in Sunday’s AFC title
game were under-inflated by 2 lbs each, per league sources.
What pressure are they supposed to be inflated to? If it can be proven that the Pats did this intentionally and it wasn’t a function of the weather, then does Bellichick get suspended? Do they lose their 1st round pick?
This is absolutely insane. It leaves me wondering how many times the Pats have cheated and haven’t been noticed.

As NFL investigates Deflate-gate would be wise to speak to Ravens. Some there believe kicking balls used in their playoff game underinflated
Just curious as to how this benefits either team in particular? Don’t they use the same balls?
They do but some QBs prefer the ball to be underinflated or overinflated. Brady was quoted in 2011 as saying he prefers the ball underinflated. Aaron Rodgers likes the ball overinflated.
I’d imagine at this level, the touch on the passes would suffer. If Brady knew the ball wasn’t going to carry quite like it should but Luck didn’t, it could have an impact.
Less risk of fumbling when one-handing the ball, I would think, for one thing.
But that would benefit both teams.
I imagine it would, though it might benefit the guy with a smaller hand size more.
So which guy has the smaller hands I wonder…
Each offense plays with his own balls.
Nope, because each team provides their own balls for when they’re on offense. Supposedly this problem was noticed as a result of D’Qwell Jackson telling Pagano there was something fishy about the ball after he intercepted Brady.
Looks fine to me… (picture attached)

Great meme! And more legit than the DC version.
lol Belichick just has this pathological need to cheat for some reason
Talk about destroying a legacy.
All game balls are supposed to be inflated to between 12.5 and 13.5 pounds per square inch of air.
Before a game starts, each team is supposed to deliver 12 game balls to the officials. The referee is then responsible to check the weight of the balls to ensure they are properly inflated. The referee then seals up Half of the footballs to be used in the second half. The remaining balls are then provided to the ball boys who will take them out to the field.
it just seems really stupid to even let the teams be involved with that. why not just have the crew bring 24 balls to each game?
Man… I was just psyching myself up to root for Belicheat and company in the Super Bowl. No way I can do that now.
The bizarre thing, is everyone expected the Patriots to maul the Colts. It’s like going into a kindergarten and cheating at a game of “Go Fish”.
I’m upset that nobody here has thought to ask Cox for his reaction to New England’s deflated balls. I’d imagine he’s feeling blue…
That joke was low hanging fruit…
Sadly, I have but one up-vote to give you…
Reading that Chip Kelly is basically the only guy doing any talking with prospects or evaluation at the Senior Bowl makes me very unhappy.
He didn’t spend the entire season scouting, because he had to run the team. There is no way he will have as much information on these prospects as a full-time GM would.
I am bracing myself for a poor draft.
Why would you think he’s the only one down there? The entire scouting department is in Mobile, they are all taking notes and talking to players.
Just read in the Inky that Kelly is running the show.
He’s running the show, but that’s just a matter of coordinating which scouts are watching who, and making sure everybody gets talked to a little bit. Most of the position coaches are down there as well. It’s really just about managing the 10 coaches and 20 scouts. All those guys have done this before, I’m not too worried.
Also with a guy like Josh Shaw, isnt Kelly, the guy you want talking to him because how much culture means to Kelly?
If the team has Shaw on their board, he going to be talked to now, at the combine, and flown into NovaCare for one of the 30 visits. And even then they’ll probably send a scout and somebody from team security to LA to dig around. Plus he was at Florida for a couple years, so Urban’s getting a call.
100% agree, but consider Kelly is the one who ultimately has to decide if he thinks his character works out, I have zero problems with Kelly doing the first interview.
Seeing that Ohio State team, it could help that Chip seems to be pretty close with Meyer. After they talked in 2011 or 2012, he took some of Chips principles, so he kind of owns him to at least say his honest opinion about the character of a player, imho.
Well that and the fact that Billy D was the best man at Urban’s wedding. I mean Chip and Urban are friends, so you would hope he would be straight with Chip, but if he isn’t completely honest with Billy D. then Urban’s an asshole.
Didn’t know about the Billy D connection. Doesn’t make sense from a football standpoint, either, since Billy D is NFL and Urban is college. But according to the article I googled, they went to college together.
I never really though too much of Urban Meyer, but what he did this year was extremely good. 3 QBs and still win the title – wow. But what’s even more impressive is his Bowl record: 9-2. Saban is 8-8 in Bowls. And 8-8 is good…
I can’t find the exact number, but he also has an extremely good record against Top 5 ranked teams. Against Top 25 ranked teams he was 25-12 before the 2014 season. And he’s only 50 years old.
Smart people value other smart people. Kellys ties with Belichick, a little bit Saban probably through Belichick, Meyer – can’t say it doesn’t speak for Chips football knowledge to being friends with the best of the best.
The Eagles have been noted for having a large contingent down there.
20+ representatives.
I didn’t mean that Chip’s the only one there. I meant that he’s calling the shots and it appears he really is the only one with any authority. The scouts may very well be functioning merely as “yes men”. I think it’s more likely than not he’s out of his depth as a talent evaluator and this arrangement will prove to be a disaster. I hope I’m wrong though.

correct
thanks i tried editing the post after i saw the text between the tweets a second later, but you replied quick. It’s weird seeing Tommy’s face for the first time after following his work for so long. I always just figured he would be faceless
Interesting statistic of the day:
Including regular season and playoffs, Russell Wilson has fumbled 13 times this season. The Seahawks have recovered all 13.
He’s good, but he’s clearly also lucky.
He’s owed a few of those. Part of San Fran being lucky and staying close to Seattle in the playoffs last season had to do with a Wilson fumble that San Fran luckily recovered.
Some thoughts on Brett Hundley from @IgglesNest:

I don’t know why the Pats would cheat against the Colts. But getting quotes from Pats players is worthless. It isn’t like in the team meeting they would say hey everyone we are going to take air out of the balls. And the fact that the Colts got crushed is also meaningless.
If the price to pay is only up to a $25k fine, then why not cheat (if you have no scruples)?
