The Eagles made some staff moves on Tuesday night.

Matt Harper will move from Asst STs coach to Asst DBs coach. He replaces Todd Lyght, who moved on to Vanderbilt. Harper was a Safety for Oregon and will mostly work with Safeties with the Eagles so that sure seems like a good fit.

Harper’s old job will go to Michael Clay, who served as the defensive quality control coach last year.

Clay’s old job will go to Stephen Thomas. He was the ILB coach for Princeton the past 3 years. He coached at Cortland, Delaware and Southern Miss as well.

* * * * *

The most interesting move is the hiring of Joe Pannunzio. He served as Alabama’s Director of Football Operations for the past 4 years.

The Eagles haven’t announced this move yet. The word broke from sources in Alabama.

Pannunzio has an interesting background.

He was at the University of Miami as TEs coach for a few years. The OL coach was Jeff Stoutland. And this is when Miami was accused of some major NCAA violations. Alabama ended up hiring both Stoutland and Pannunzio despite the allegations. Remember, Bama had already hired Ed Marynowitz when he had the NCAA checking him out.

And Pannuzio is no saint. Check out what college president F. King Alexander said about him.

“You must understand that in 2005 when I was president at Murray State, I fired our football coach, Joe Pannunzio, because of numerous incidents that occurred in our program under him that were quite bad,” Alexander said. “Well, Pannunzio immediately was hired by Miami, and he’s one of the coaches who’s been prominently mentioned by Shapiro in the current scandal. He’s now the head of football operations at Alabama.”

Wow.

Pannunzio was named in the damning Yahoo! report as someone who, while an assistant coach at Miami, “had a close relationship with Shapiro and facilitated the booster having improper contact with recruits.”  Shapiro refused to speak on or off the record regarding the Pannunzio allegations uncovered by Yahoo!.

Another former Miami assistant, Jeff Stoutland, is also on Nick Saban‘s Alabama staff, serving as the Tide’s offensive line coach after being hired in January.

Saban addressed Thursday the two new members of the program allegedly involved in the South Beach scandal, and said the two were thoroughly vetted prior to their hirings.

“I know what goes on in this program and I know that we do things correctly,” Saban said. “We do have people in this organization, who worked there (at Miami). Before those people were ever hired here we do an NCAA check to make sure they pass all compliance criteria and that they don’t have any red flags relative to compliance history.

“We certainly did that in both of these cases. Now, if any of these people had any wrongdoing, I’m sure the NCAA will investigate it in due time and, if they did anything wrong, I’m sure they will get the appropriate punishment, which we would do if we had any internal problems in our organization. But we’re going to continue and control and manage what we do in our organization and do it correctly, and that’s basically all we can be concerned about.”

Clearly Nick Saban had no reservations about hiring people that pushed the rules ( or flat out broke them). Chip Kelly seems pretty open to it as well.

If Pannunzio can help the Eagles to find and develop talent, I’m not worried about some NCAA infractions. It does make for an interesting pattern, though.

As for Pannunzio’s biggest claim to fame…

Good eye for talent right there. Graham was a basketball player at Miami until his Senior year.

    @ T-Law

Any word about what job Pannunzio will have here?

Am I a bad person for not caring one bit about executives who violated NCAA rules in terms of recruiting?

Let me say that I’m no expert at those rules. But whenever I hear about someone who broke those rules and what they did, I think: whatever. As long as he’s good at his job, hire him.

Same thing when I hear about the Gurley “scandal”. I simply don’t care and my impression is, NFL execs don’t care either. Can’t blame them.

What I find more interesting is the Saban/Kelly connection. I know how close Belichick and Saban are, I know that Kelly and Belichick are close, but at least it seems to me like Kelly is close with Saban, too.

You can say a lot of things about Kelly, but his gang is really as elite as it gets. Belichick is one of the greatest NFL coaches of all time. Saban and Urban Meyer are two of the greatest College coaches of all time. And btw. Kelly himself wasn’t at the top level that long, but he’s a legend in College, too.

I hate Thursday night games but I guess if you get one, the first week is best bc you are not on a short week and then you have 10 days for the next opponent.

boy would love to beat the Pats when they get their rings.

  66. 66 jpate said at 10:39 AM on February 4th, 2015:

I dont think I want the eagles to get that game. That’s almost guaranteed loss. NE is almost unbeatable there as it is and would be even tougher in the home opener after winning the SB

  67. 67 ACViking said at 11:17 AM on February 4th, 2015:

But if the Pats are nearly unbeatable at home — meaning the Eagles will very like lose whenever the game’s played (on that premise)– wouldn’t you want the Thurs Night Opener to get the 10 days’ preparation for the next opponent?

Consider that ESPN may ask that the NFL schedule the Eagles v. Pats for a MNF game later in the season — leaving 1 less day to prepare for the next game. Off of a loss, too (again, on the premise that the Pats are a near home lock).

Shouldn’t Eagles fans want to the Thurs night opener?

  68. 68 jpate said at 1:50 PM on February 4th, 2015:

    Few things on that
    1. I prefer not to start the season 0-1 (hoping if we play mid season we are a better team by then)
    2. While odds of beating Pats are home are low, I think they get worse on a season opener after winning the SB.
    3. I would take that MNF game with better chance of winning in NE as that’s probably our toughest game

  69. 69 ACViking said at 3:40 PM on February 4th, 2015:

What if those mean NFL schedule-makers put the Eagles on the road after facing New England on MNF?

Ultimately, the only sure thing at this point is opening the season in NE guarantees 10 days before the next game.

I find it fascinating, ( and very hypercritical ) for Chip Kelly to ” preach ” culture, every chance he gets, but then he turns around ( when it’s convenient ) and disregards ( character ) issues when he hires, or promotes his staff. Marynowitz was suspended without pay for violating NCAA player contact rules, where he broke those rules numerous times, while working for Alabama. Now Kelly also hires Pannunzio, who has a even dirtier past, concerning NCAA violations. There are ” rumors ” that came out, after last years draft, that Kelly made it very difficult for Roseman to construct their draft board, because Kelly put red flags next to many players names ( removing those players from any serious consideration ) and therefore, seriously limiting their options for drafting many talented players. This seems ( if true ) very ironic, considering Kellys recent staff hirings. I would love to see Tommy’s insights into these issues. He knows a lot of football people, who have, a lot of inside information. That would be a interesting read.

No source, that’s why I put ( rumor ) in parenthesis. I think I heard Adam Caplan say it. He is pretty connected with NFL ” insider ” information. I just assumed it to be true, because the Eagles desperately needed help at cornerback, and they passed on Bradley Roby, a great athalete at the cornerback position. He is 5′ 11″ and ran a 4.39 – 40 yard dash, at the combine. He had character issues coming out, or he probably would have been the number one or two corner drafted last year. He would have been a much better pick, than Marcus Smith III, who nobody expected to be drafted in the 1st round.

Pretty sure that Marynowitz’s violations occured when he was at Central Florida , not at Alabama. Regardless, I agree with your general point. Marynowitz was hired before Kelly got here. Kelly himself has NCAA violations in his past. Stoutland was painted by the media as being involved in the whole Miami scandal but I don’t think he was mentioned in the NCAA’s final report. Now, Pannunzio’s baggage. To me, I don’t think there’s really anything wrong with any of these guys’ character. They just didn’t pay annough attention to detail in following the NCAA rules exactly. As long as they give them a thorough background check, I don’t really have a problem hiring them. I’d hope Kelly will likewise view each draft prospect on a case-by-case basis and not automatically remove him from the draft board on the basis of past transgressions.

  89. 89 philliesfan123 said at 8:14 PM on February 4th, 2015:

Greg, I’m quite baffled by your quote, ” I don’t think that there is anything wrong with these guys character …… they just didn’t pay (enough ) attention to ( detail ) in following the NCAA rules ( exactly. ) ” You must work in politics, or be a lawyer, because that was the biggest twist on a characterization, about something that iv’e heard in some time. They ” didn’t pay enough attention, to the details of the rules. ” Were you serious, with that, or were you pulling my leg ? Let me clarify something to you …. IGNORANCE, is NOT a excuse, when you violate a ( law or rule. ) Just ask the Saints coach, and Roger Goodell. It’s not the crime of the century, i’m positive that many, many collages stretch the rules, to their limits.

  90. 90 Cafone said at 12:35 PM on February 4th, 2015:

You are confusing “culture” and “character”. They are not the same things. Kelly is building a “win at all costs, screw the rules” culture. It may not be what you were thinking when Kelly preached culture, but it’s still a culture. And that kind of culture seems to be working out pretty good for the Seahawks and Patriots.

  91. 91 Bert's Bells said at 3:58 PM on February 4th, 2015:

I don’t think “screw the rules” is accurate. We’ve heard about him going after guys to taking shortcuts, cutting across the grass, that sort of thing.

Honestly i have no position on this Kelly boviously sets his own priorities. There’s something about Alabama recruiting that he loves (probably that they are the best at it). I’m sure he also understands that Alabama was soo good partially b/c of the name.

Bad news is that I wonder if any of these guys will be good DB recruiters.

  95. 95 philliesfan123 said at 8:01 PM on February 4th, 2015:

I strongly disagree with you. Yes, character does not exactly equate to culture. That is, unless you are building a ” culture ” of ( high character ) players. Culture can represent ” anything ” that you want it to. I think what Kelly was saying was – I / we / Philadelphia Eagles, can win -without ” great players “, because of the ( great system ) culture that I have instilled / installed. I think, Kelly believes that players, that are not willing to buy into ” his culture ” , are people who ( must be ) lacking in high character. I guess it is somewhat semantics, but I still am surprised that Kelly has hired a guy with some questions about his ( ethical ) ” character. “

  96. 96 Anders said at 1:20 PM on February 4th, 2015:

What Kelly preach is culture, that means 100% devoted to his cause, if that means every roll the socks up everybody does that. Kelly can then care less what you do outside of that.

Jackson was not cut because of any gang thing, he was cut because he “would roll his socks up” part of the culture

  99. 99 philliesfan123 said at 7:48 PM on February 4th, 2015:

I could be wrong …. but I wouldn’t confuse ” pulling socks up ” with Kelly’s, culture statements. I think, what I was trying to say, was that kelly doesn’t want players with character issues, because he thinks that people with questionable character are less likely to, by into ” HIS ” type of ” team culture .” So ( in my opinion ) Kelly is saying that ( high character = great team culture. )

  100. 100 Anders said at 4:39 AM on February 6th, 2015:

Can any individual’s NCAA violations come close to the fraudulence of the NCAA? This is an organization backed by billions of dollars that exists to perpetuate a master/slave relationship between school and athlete, AND to promote the far-fetched notion that scholarship recipients have no more rights than convicted felons. Many of the “violations” that raise the ire of the big bad NCAA involve efforts on the part of students and administrators to address basic issues of freedom of speech and association. If the NFL gets tired of the gravy train, it can always go the way of baseball, build a minor league, pay their prospects and tell the NCAA to fuck off and deal with it. There will be mass retirements of university presidents and administrators – and none of those hypocrites will be missed. Schools would close for lack of revenue, and maybe, just maybe the priorities of higher education can be adjusted to fall inline with its institutions’ stated missions. It can’t happen soon enough.

  114. 114 unhinged said at 6:20 PM on February 4th, 2015:

I can think of a couple of reasons: Increase the tent. The NCAA is full of mid-level bureaucrats who answer to alumni and school VIPs. They are of marginal service to the NFL. By expanding the scope of the NFL, a hefty revenue increase would fall to the NFL. 2) The NCAA is not a loved institution. Football si /NCAA no. The NFL risks its stature by being an ally of a despised institution. The NFL does not need the NCAA, but should the NCAA crumble, the NFL would have to pick up the pieces. By being proactive, it can preempt a severe blow. And last, The End of The NCAA is a book waiting to be written, and the NFL could occupy such a massive stage that nobody would be able to focus on it’s myriad internal political controversies. No billionaire will say no to more millions!

2 years ago we added him to our staff creating a spot for him, and he was helping the offensive lineman, alot of work helping lANE GET up to speed, but last year chip moved him to the other side of the ball, let him get some experience with the defense, so this past year instead of working with the OL, he was working with the OLBs on their pass rush to beat offensive tackles… cant give Tre ALL THE CREDIT, McGovern is an excellent OLB coach and billy davis even brought Hall of fame Kevin Green to help the OLBs with their pass rush… i dont know how much credit should go to Tre but Barwin practically trippled his sack total since Tre moved to that side of the ball, BG had a breakout year… curious to see whos staff Tre lands on next…

Tre confirmed that Marcus Smith moving to ILB was purely a numbers game, case of Meco getting injured and not any snaps available at OLB with Cole,BG, and Barwin balling, but tre says he expects Marcus future to be as a OLB pass rusher…. says Marcus is a smart kid, who will figure it out and that most of his issues were just a case of needing to get stronger which is pretty common for rookie edge rushers..

always liked Tre, he was a philly guy thru and thru, and he talked about still being fixated on winning a superbowl. Hope he lands on his feet and goes on to climb the assistant coaches ladder.for a successful career. He was a warrior in the trenches for us

…CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora reports Browns first-round CB Justin Gilbert was seen “more as a nuisance than an asset” by the end of this past season.

“He was routinely late, was a chronic knucklehead and rubbed teammates and coaches the wrong way,” writes La Canfora, who has an excellent writeup on the new lows of the Browns at the link below. Gilbert, the No. 8 pick in last year’s draft, was reportedly often late to games. He played just 373 snaps as a rookie and tumbled behind UDFA K’Waun Williams and fourth-rounder Pierre Desir. Much like teammate Johnny Manziel, Gilbert has the early makings of a bust.

one of my rules is stay away from signing the free agents who are coming off one monster year thats significantly better than his previous seasons, but this is a young kid who is still developing and its not like he was pissing away opportunities the last few years, they lost Byrd and this kid finally got an opportunity to play a big role and made the most of it having a quality season…

I’m just saying. Actually when thinking about it really hard I am not sure if the Eagles will pay Celek $4.75m next season…

More to GEAGLE’s point, Chip Kelly would pay Celek, his favorite player by a large margin. Seeing as Chip’s in charge, I’m inclined to agree with GEAGLE. Perhaps Celek restructures to retire as an Eagle, but I doubt anyone with the ability has the desire to cut Celek outright, prudent or not.

i happen to believe that as well. However wondering still bears to be interesting. In fact I cannot wait to see who’s calling the shots when it comes down to very difficult salary decisions. Something inside me still wants to believe that Howie will have a say. But again, very interesting off season ahead of us!

  161. 161 GEAGLE said at 7:36 PM on February 4th, 2015:

casey wont be cut either. Chip cares too much about culture to cut the hardest working player at novacare, who has made huge personal sacrifice for the good of this team. I assume we will extend casey, so we can give him a new deal, and make it clear to him that his time will come when Celeks ends.. Thinking James Casey/Ertz/Burton will be our long term trio, but Celek will remain as long as we can rationally keep him

chip kelly is all about culture, sacrifice for the good of the team, he knows he cant afford to continue to try and have a pro team with a college team environment if he cuts Casey who is the poster child for everything Chip preaches…. come to work early, work your ass off, help young burton grow to take your job, sacrafice more personal stats and touches than any player on this team, and chip will cut you? James Casey is his poster child for “buying in,and making sacrifices for this team, we will try to et his cap figure down a bit by giving him an extension

$4.0M for a 3rd string TE. If someone sits Chip down and tells him it’s a choice between keeping Kelly or signing X safety or Y cornerback, one would hope he has enough sanity to not pay a 3rd string TE $4M. Let Howie negotiate that down to even half of what he was going to make. $2M is still a lot to pay for a 3rd string TE but he’s a great STs player so we could live with it.

  163. 163 GEAGLE said at 7:52 PM on February 4th, 2015:

thats why i said to give james an extension…

  164. 164 GermanEagle said at 8:32 PM on February 4th, 2015:

An extension not always works out to saving money. The extension needs to include a pay cut otherwise you are just ‘parking’ dead money for the future.

  165. 165 GermanEagle said at 8:34 PM on February 4th, 2015:

Unless Casey takes at least half a pay cut he’s simply not worth holding on if you’ve got Trey Burton waiting in the wings.

  166. 166 GEAGLE said at 7:39 PM on February 4th, 2015:

celek still produces, just not in a way easy for the fans to see, and not in a way that shows up on the stat sheet.
    .,.
heck, putting Celek in to run block is the only thing close to us running “Power”… its like our version of power plays. cut him and we are all finesse..

Check virgil green from the post below — Celek and Case combined. Run game improved almost 20 yds/game when he started blocking when JT was out. Gym rat type – calls himself Hulk.

That wouldn’t be a bad idea. They could keep him in a dark, quiet room, between games.

It was reported that, similar to the surprising pronunciation of Marynowitz, Pannunzio has a surprising pronunciation as well: Pin-o-key-o.

Thanks. As a general rule, if I appear to be breaking new information to the forum, be suspicious. By the time I learn anything, there are already 100 comments discussing the news. 70 of them by GEAGLE.

this has nothing to do with Tom or anything i saw on this site, but im beaten down by the atrocious level of eagles coverage today. its like everywhere i turned, stupidy, and even good sources are goimng to shit… i checked Phillymag, and an intern was “answering read questions” and completely botched trying to explain what the loss of Demeco meant this year, something i went in to detail yesterday, then i turn on the radio and its all about trading Foles to the titans to eventually get marriotta… then all the mocks continue to put LANDON cOLLINS with us,, I sat in an airport for 4 hours and so desperate for Eagles info, and every where I turnd, I found patjetic media reporting that I knew what I was hearing just wasn’t accurate… And Febuary just started…. This offseason is going to be unbearable, especially this month,,,

Don’t understand how the entire nation is obssessed with tbis game but it’s so hard to find an accurate Eagle convo or discussion this time of year,,,.i don’t even know where else to even check at this point besides this site,

Anyone on like Sirius radio that I don’t know about or a podcast where I can find info from someone who has some type of clue?
