Cornering the Market
Posted: March 7th, 2015 | Author: Tommy Lawlor | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 505 Comments »Bradley Fletcher and Cary Williams are gone. That may be good news, but the Eagles do need to replace them. That process will start next week when free agency begins.
My #1 target is Byron Maxwell from Seattle. And it sure sounds like he’s interested in the Eagles paying him.
"I would have to consider them." Byron Maxwell says Eagles are a scheme fit for his talents: http://t.co/CLRTewYtFr
— Sheil Kapadia (@SheilKapadia) March 6, 2015
Anchor Chris McKendry, who is an Eagles fan, asked Maxwell if he had any thoughts on potentially joining the Birds.
“Definitely,” he said. “They run the schemes that I’m talking about – Cover 3 and man press. And they’re committed to winning. Definitely, Philadelphia, if they were to come at me, I would have to consider them.”
Maxwell certainly won’t be cheap. A lot of teams are looking for CB help. Some other team could make an insane offer that the Eagles feel isn’t worth matching or beating. Just because you want a player and he makes a lot of sense doesn’t mean a deal will happen.
There are some other options.
Tramon Williams
Kareem Jackson
Davon House
It would really seem the Eagles need to come away with one of these guys. In a fantasy world, they would sign 2 of them.
Sheil Kapadia makes a good case for House as a target.
House has all the tools to be a quality starting cornerback in the Eagles’ scheme. He’s young, has good size, can play man coverage and has shown flashes of being a really good player.
In a perfect world, the Eagles would be able to sign Byron Maxwell and House. But if the bidding for Maxwell gets too rich for their liking, don’t be surprised if the Birds quickly shift their attention to bringing House in as a starter.
Sheil has plenty of good All-22 gifs that show you the good and the bad of House.
What about Antonio Cromartie? I don’t think of him as a Chip Kelly player, but I could be wrong on that. Cro, which is an excellent nickname, certainly has the size to play in this scheme.
There are some other guys I’m not sure about.
Perrish Cox
Chris Culliver
Jimmy Wilson
Walter Thurmond III
Patrick Robinson
Peanut Tillman is about to turn 34 and has dealt with injuries the last 2 years. You still wonder if he might have one more good year. He would be a good veteran mentor for any young CBs the Eagles had under him.
The Eagles must find one good CB in free agency. Beyond that they can be creative if needed. They do have Jaylen Watkins and Nolan Carroll already in place. Could one of those guys be an effective starter?
The Eagles need corner help in terms of starters and depth. They need to build a talented, deep secondary. One player isn’t going to solve this. Getting Maxwell would be a great start, but he’s not The Answer. He could be part of the answer so I will be nervous on signing day. I want him visiting Philly right away.
I’m sure Kelly and Ed Marynowitz have a plan. I just can’t wait to see what they do.
_
My prediction: The Eagles will have a deal worked out with Byron Maxwell by the end of the day Saturday.
My suspicion is they already have something worked out. Just can’t talk about it yet.
They weren’t allowed to talk until midnight. They might be meeting at this moment. Or maybe they will meet tomorrow morning.
Actually they’re not supposed to talk to agents until noon tomorrow.
But when has that ever stopped anyone
Midnight
nope… they changed it last year
Thanks
His agents are said to arrive late tonight to start chatting at midnight…allegedly
nothing is worked out yet,.,., how can there be a deal already? agent should be fired if thats true.. bunch of teams will bid on max, he will entertainm other offers to drive up the price… 2 days from now Max will be worth more than what the eagles would pay today… no deal is done, not even close… Negotiations 101…
..
how the hell does an agent know he wont get a better offer toiday? i know we think we are the only team that matters, but we aint the only ones bidding on Max, and the self proclaimed “prettiest girl at the dance” will want to hear all “her” optionions
…
people need to understand negotiation stances and leverage… Mac and Max would NEVER agree to a deal today, they would have to be morons
His agent has a general idea what teams are willing to pay because they’ve all been tampering for a while. His agent also, I’d think, has a general idea about each coaching staff, organization, and city from having done business in multiple cities.
bidding intensifies, no one made their best offers two weeks ago…
Well the Eagles get to make the first offer, so he might not get a chance to leave town.
thats the key… the key isnt getting him to agree on a contract today, because he is too sought after, two days from now someone will beat our offer..the KEY from now to monday, is staying at the top of all the offers in hopes that Philly is the first team he visits on tuesday… getting him to visit us first is half the battle… the other half is NOT letting him leave tuesday without a contract, thats going to take serious offers and it wont be easy,.,,hopefully we are fully committed to getting this done, and it doesnt hurt for Maragos to blow his phone up these next 5 days
Dude, I have to give props when due. About a year ago, or so, we had a random convo about traveling in South America. You told me to check out Uruguay. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU. This is one of the most beautiful and chill places I have ever been. My Lady and I are having a blast – in Punta Del Este now and loving life. Seriously – some of the best advice ever given to me. Thanks again Homie!
love punta!! awesomne place, fun people, good restaurants.. happy to hear that man,.,good for you,, no better way for a man to spend money then seeing other parts of the world. glad you enjoying it
if you ever in Italy, some small gorgeous places to see:
..
The gorgeous Island of Sardegnia, I go to “Santa Theresa di Gallura”: when im there(the name of the city).. its like a 6 hour ferry ride from Rome
..
“Sperlonga Mare” real small beach town about an hour drive from Rome..gorgeous…
…
If you like to Ski, “Cortina” or “Madonna di Campiglio” in the alpes, really small exclusive sky resorts… Madonna di Campiglion might be my favorite winter vacation town in the world”..its in the Italian Part of the alpes, Dolamite Montains..
..
There is also a fun Island, few hour boat ride from rome called “Ponza”..everyone Loves it, im not a big fan, then again I was there all by myself…
Last night, we were drinking a bottle of wine on the beach watching the sun dip into the ocean and I raise my glass and I said, “To, Geagle babe.” Lady looks at me and says, “WTF is a Geagle?” “It’s One of the reasons we are here right now.” Lady stands up and screams (at the top of her lungs). “F#ck yeah, Geagle.” I lost it. Thanks again bruds. Off to the ocean!
bwahahahaha THANKS MAN… Glad you enjoyed it.. had family who moved there from italy for like 20 years had a few nice restaurants down there, 1 in montavideo that was called “:Roma Amor” and one in Punta del est, not sure if it was a different name or the same…
..
really nice, laid back, fun loving people. go to bars at night and everyone is singing, just having fun….
..
Because the “legal tampering” period is a joke and the negotiations have all been going on for weeks
House will be signed… Praying for max tho
..
Not sure about the safety tho. Fingers crossed Searcy
McCourty
I liked house better before I knew our media was on to him. If Kapadia is jinxing him then maybe we have a shot at Max after all. Doubt we give McCourty 10mil….I’m not expecting the big crazy monster free agent haul most expect when they see 50nmil. Thinking fans are setting some big expectations that this franchise won’t meet
Obviously they can’t sign everyone. But McCourty would be a game changer.
and a spit in the face to Jenkins… believe it or not, searcy is a pretty bad ass safety…
…
i just dont have as much confidence as everyone else seems to have in the eagles to start signing a bunch of the top players at their positions… sure as hell I wouldnt mind tho…. certainly rooting for McCourty, i just dont feel confident that the eagles feel the same
..
the #1 player at his position, isnt the only signing to be excited about….
Gilchrist
i wouldnt target him off the bat…. for me, he is the worst case scenario fallback option if you miss out on McCourty,Searcy and possibly Rahim…. ending up with Gilchrist isnt bad, but id be dissapointed if we target him without atleast truing to do better first
I think they’ll get Mccourty and settle on a CB.
CSN citing “sources LOL”… that eagles will go after Max n McCourty Hard… if the eagles signed them both I would cry tears of joy…. but the lifelong eagle fan in me doesnt believe it… fingers crossed im dead wrong!!!
So, the Eagles have 50 million to spend and they need four starters to have a very solid defense: safety, cornerback*2, OLB.
seems doable.
They also need at least one OL and a RB somewhere along the line. And they have to consider re-upping Cox and Kendricks, at least.
It’s all doable though.
EDIT: not to mention a WR who may or may not be Maclin
And a wr1… Kinda missing one of those at the moment
Yeah, I edited my post as you were typing that
It’s a lot to accomplish. Not all of it will happen in FA.
Yeah I’m thinking this may be a retooling offseason, unfortunately. We just have so many starting holes now with all the releases/free agents/ trade. Not to mention our depth if someone goes down. I’m hopeful for these reports about splashy FA to be correct, but it doesn’t seem like us to allow this many leaks and go after such high profile names. I know, I know… Chip is in charge now. So we shall see
I don’t think it’s really leaks, it’s just speculation gone wild.
I hope you’re right sir.
Wr is a big need
I still think they’ll be able to sign Maclin but it’s certainly not a sure thing at this point. One guy I’m thinking of that might be a good WR for us is Torrey Smith, but I haven’t seen his name kicked around at all for the Eagles.
Mac stays,. But he won’t sign til day 2 or 3 of free agency. Nothing we can do will get him to sign before day 2 of FA at the earliest… It’s the smart play for the cards in his hand
I know you are confident that Mac will be back, but I a not so sure. The moves Kelly has been making and many of us believe will make this offseason point towards Kelly looks at the trends of top teams the last couple of years.
Who were the top WRs in this year’s super bowl? Jordan Matthews might be bettervthan all of them already. I would love Mac back, but Kelly might prefer to go big in defense, draft MM, and get by with average WRs.
Mac is one of chips guys.. 4 days ago he told Mac, he wants him back,.,, Chip GETS WHAT HE WANTS these days…
..
Chip is very player specific… if he was willing to draft players 3 rounds early to make sure we get them, an extra Mil or two wont keep him from a player he wants,,
..
Mac staying is one of the things im most confident about… but what do i know?
..
if chip goes into next season with a young QB, Coop and two 2nd year WRs, he is certifiably insane!
you realize we lost our elite RB, and will play a young QB right? coop as the #1 option when chip probably cant wait to cut coop next year? i dont buy it
Gronk isn’t exactly making street walker rates as a “receiver” if you’ll allow me to expand the definition.
Fletcher Cox to me is priority #1, Maxwell/McCourty #2
Cox won’t be a FA for 2 years we have some time
Cox is a priority but remember he’s not a FA after next season like Kendricks is. The Eagles have his 5th year option. Now that’s a pretty hefty one year salary and they’d probably like to lower that cap figure with an extension but to me, unless you’re planning on trading him, a Kendricks extension would be more pressing.
5th year option is like 7 mil for Cox I don’t think it’s that big really
cox, kendricks money gets skimmed off the top and set aside,,,
Exactly. I’m not extending Cox this year unless he is offering a good discount to do so. If I’m Cox’s agent I’m waiting ti see what M Wilkerson signs for and ask for that deal. Eagles have 2 more years to sign Cox plus the franchise tag the year after if they need to. No way Cox is going anywhere any time soon. Use that money to fix other areas.
I would extend Kendricks tomorrow. Keeping him around is a much bigger priority.
cox IMO is way more important then Mykal.. then again, i would go crazy if we lost either
No doubt Cox is more important, but my point was we have jo reason to rush in extending him. He will be here 2-3 more years before we would NEED to give him a long term deal. Kendricks is a fre agent after next season. He needs to be locked up now
Think fans are setting expectations a tad bit too high. 50mil is not as much as it sounds when you have some nice young players… Not expecting the big splash most are. Sure as hell would love to be wrong
If they’re seriously considering doing a big trade up for Mariota, and I am not saying they are or they aren’t, they really have to do something very big in FA to make it work, since they will be trading away so many draft picks.
no they dont… they really dont…
..
nothing says they have to sign the #1 guy at a position like Maxwell and McCourty, when there are quality #2 options like HOUse, Seasrcy/Rahim…top guys arent the only ways to improve…#2 or #3 guy at his position can be a great signing too… remember how signing Jenkins instead of Byrd paid off? fans werent too happy when Jenkins signings was announbced, but thats not the eagles problem
.
nothing says they wont sign thy 6th most expensive OLB on the market
…
and even if im right about this, we are still getting good players, nothing to be upset about, but fans will be pissed due to false expectations that they have about that 50mil…
The way you’re talking signing those #2 and #3 guys at multiple positions is also “big” in the grand scheme of things.
im talking about spending like 3mil less on each position… big difference!!! what was the difference between #1 option Byrds salary, and #3 safety Jenkins salary? difference was insane!!!!
To a point, but you’re not trying to pass off Casey Matthews and Nate Allen as ok guys to fill spots with either.
what was the difference between #1 option Byrds salary, and #3 safety Jenkins salary? difference was insane!!!!
..
Davon House, Da’Norris Searcy, Brooks Reed or sheard…. dont you dare mention Casey and Nate with THOSE names!!
You know I’m a fan of all four of those guys, so don’t even try it.
im not the one who introduced the names Nate allen and Casey Mathews in a convo against the #2 options on the market… just sayin.
,.,.
dude, you think i actually want to be right!! I pray that tuesday everyone is making fun of how wrong I am while rejoicing over the signing of the top players the market has to offer at 4-5 positions,.,., i wish i felt more confident, believe me i do,… Im rooting for you man, im rooting for me to be DEAD WRONG! i just warn not to get crazy with expectations because you risk being set up for failure..
..
if i take it to McCourty or Bust level right now, even tho the fan in me WISHES to see him in Eagle green, unmet expectations probably wont allow me to enjoy the signing of a quality #2 player at his position, which would be a HUge addition for us, even if it isnt the biggest addittion we can possibly make.
..
no point in arguing about it, because im on your side. we want the same exact things, you just seem more confident then I am that we will get our way…. lets just be honest that there isnt just 1 player available at each position that can provide a major upgrade for us… Hope for the #1 option, dont 100% expect it or you wont be able to appreciate us landing a secondary option which would still be huge for us is all im trying to say…
…
who I want the eagles to sign, looks alot like your list buddy,… i just wish my what i expect to happen list was as sexy as yours is… maybe its years of marinating in negadelphia… sure as hell hope im reading this all wrong
In either way, if we sign House, Reed, Searcy, and Sheard – we did very well.
very true brother… but hopefully you are right and we do even better!!!!!!!
How about Maxwell, House, Reed, Searcy, and Sheard?
But a signing of Reed and Sheard would precipitate both a cut of Meco (which I’m good with) and the possible trade of Kendricks as part of the Mariota Olympics (which would suck, but might be necessary).
lol you really have to ask me of all people about adding 5 quality defenders’? lol im like the only eagle fan that doesnt give a shit about chips offense. Im all defense, all the time…. YES PLEASE!!!
What bugs me about House is: Green Bays Defense isn’t good. And yes, they have Williams and Shields as CBs, but it’s not like those guys are Revis/Browner or Sherman/Maxwell.
Now, I read Sheils piece on him, you mentioned him very often. I never really watched him and when I watched the Packers, he didn’t stand out to me.
I’m not saying he isn’t a good player, but why did he never start? Especially if we’re talking about CB #1, I’d like to know if a guy who was never a real starter for the Packers would be good enough for us.
Now, if we’re talking CB #2, a 50 % snaps guy behind Williams and Shields could be a good option. Especially because he seems to fit what we’re looking for at corner. But, f.e., House/Carroll as starting CBs, I don’t know if I would really like that scenario.
Good questions on House.
House sat between two quality starting veterans…at a position you dont rotate… BG sat the bench behind two veterans, barely playing…. does that mean some team shouldnt pay BG well?
…
BG and HOUSE are the same type of signing, two talented guys, blocked by better veterans on their roster, who GMs will sign betting that they explode during this next contract when they finally get a starting opportunity…. if you wouldnt sign house, then Teams shouldnt pay BG… same exact type of prospect.
..
you saw BG play in limited snaps, i saw house play in subpackages and fill in during injuries… same type of prospect.
..
stay away from paying older veterans for pass performance and their name brand… better to pay a kid whos best ball is still ahead of him, not halfway behind him.. to pull that off, a certain amount of “projecting” is involved
he is a signing you make because you like the way he has steadily progressed his first 4 years in the league, and there are alot of teams that will view him as one of those uys whos best ball will come during th next contract he signs… its not like the has been sitting on the bench behind a bum like Bradley Fletcher… quality young player hasnt played a major role only because he has two quality veteran corners ahead of him on a superbowl contender..kind of understandable no? we didnt play BG much, but he wasnt on our bench because he sucked… obviously i wouldnt be talking about signing a kid who was stuck on the bench behind two bums…
…
Tramon williams, Peanut Tillman, Cromarties..doubt we have any interest due to age..
..
Flowers, Buster skrine we wont have interest do to size,,
..
House is the next most realistic option on the eagles wish list is my guess….. House/Nolan certainly isnt the dream team… but if you stick two quality Safeties behind them they will be much better… Keep in mind that no matter how much they spend in free agency on a CB, they are forced to prioritize drafting one because they have no young outside CBs on the bench..if we have to draft a CB in the top 100, god chance we will hope that he can start a year from now,,,, so since NO matter what, they have to spend a pick on a CB, i wouldnt be surprised if they go with 2 CB names this city wont celebrate, figuring that the much improved safety and our pass rush will help mask them for a year against the kid is ready to take over.
..
im convinced Nolan starts next year, but i doubt he starts more then 1 year… house what he lacks in years of outside experiwence he makes up for in versatililty with all the subpackage roles he has played
..
Sterling Moore is a guy I wouldn’t mind seeing signed. Alan Ball wouldn’t be a bad depth signing.
i know sheil wrote a piece on him, but i havent read it yet… i need to check it out to compare my opinion with his..atleast i know sheil put some work into it and isnt making up names like elliot Parks… i cant believe CSN is starting to put that donkey on TV…. are they purposely hiring the worst people imaginable?
Can’t spend all 50 unless you front load it.
I hope they front load a lot of it. We need these guys signed, but with the ability to blow them out the door for little or no cap implications if we cut them after two years.
If this tampering window is quiet like years prior, this 3 days is going to take forever.
Official signings take place starting Tuesday at 4 PM EDT
Yeah I’m saying the 3 day window from Saturday to Tuesday is going to go by soooooo slowly– if the tampering window is quiet again
I wouldn’t mind House, and Flowers. They could sign Flowers to a short term deal, and see how Watkins, and any draft picks develop by the end of his contract. I could also see them signing some mid level guys like Gilchrist, and Brooks Reed. With having to re-sign guys like Cox, Kendricks, and Foles I don’t think they can go nuts in FA. I think Chip will play it smart.
If we are able to only get one elite DB, would you rather have McCourty or Maxwell?
McCourty
I’d rather have McCourty.
McCourty but secretly I’m hoping we don’t spend big at olb and just sign both
https://vine.co/v/OEKxv2pHlmj
Embiid before tonight’s Sixers game
Gut tells me Maxwell will be an Eagle. Not sure about McCourty.
KJ might not make it out of texas.
Cowboys straight dogging murray.
Replaceable player if his salary gets too crazy.
Plus I’m still 100% convinced that AP is a Cowboy once the off-season is ended.
I think AP stays in Minni. Cowboys only have 7mil in space. They are lacking depth everywhere and have FAs of their own they may want to keep around. How are the going the fit AP’s 12 mil in there.
I atually hope the do. They will have to give up picks and money. That will deplete their depth even more.
Agreed, but Jerry Jones might not be able to keep it in his pants on this one.
And if Peterson gets the Cowboys to agree to extend his deal by a year; hello huge signing bonus to take care of this year’s cap space.
http://overthecap.com/player/adrian-peterson/1753/
Add two years, cut him a check for $15 million right away and “poof” new Cowboy with a bad deal.
being cautious on oft injured players who have a great “contract” year…
What do you guys think of Kenny Britt as the #2 WR if we do resign Maclin? He’ll be a more reliable compliment to Maclin/Matthews than Pooper.
nope nope nope.
chip wont even consider him… literally… nothing about britt will scream “buy in” to chip
Use to love him but now — no thanks.
There is only one ‘Answer’, but hopefully Maxwell can be part of ‘The Solution’

Oh yeah!
Guys
The legal tampering starts at noon today, and not as believed by some past midnight!
And its taking forever to get to noon…
The last couple of years you haven’t heard much during the legal tampering period. The first time they had one, rumors of players agreeing to terms leaked but the league sent out a memo warning of fines happened. It’s stupid. League is basically saying tamper all you want in the illegal tampering period before the legal tampering period, and we’ll turn a blind eye but unless you tell the agents “Wink! Wink! This isn’t a “formal offer”, it’s only our “negotiating position”!” we’re coming down on you.
Agreed that its stupid…but that isn’t stopping my thirst for new Eagles FA info… its a sickness really
who cares if teams tampered before? it doesnt even matter because nbew bids will come in the next few days and drive up whatever price they would have agreed to already.. markety is still growing, past negotiations will be worthless in two days
..
negotiations 101, negotiation stances, leverage,… until these things are factored into the equation, we have no shot figuring out what the eagles will do if we refuse to factor contractual negotiation technques in the predictions and expectations of this free agent process.
..
Max and Mac have too much leverage to agree to anything today, they would have to be morons… if they like the eagles as their top choice, they will spend the next few days entertaining the top offers, some crappy franchise will offer the most because they have no choice, the agents will come back to us with that top figure, and give us a chance to get in the ballpark of those figures/…we wont have to match the top offer of a bad team, but we have to get in that price range
True, but I’m sure they’ve been illegally tampering for weeks.
Weird, a friend of mine just showed me that tweet from McLane, but I cannot find it on his Twitter account…
Fake account;
https://twitter.com/Jeff_McIane
it’s enough to deal with media and “inside sources” that never prove to be anything… now we’re reporting on things friends pass around? LOL. I know this guy, who knows this guy, who knows this guy, who knows this guy, who has a sister that — knows this guy and he said…..
No, he thought it was an actual tweet from McLane.
yes, HIS friend sent it to him — but he couldn’t find it…if it smells like a fish, talks like a fish — it’s a fish…
TO meet Jeff Garcia
Donut. He sent me a tweet from McLane which a poster below identified as a fake account.
No worries though, I won’t be posting rumors that according to my cousin’s neighbour’s old friend from the gas station little brother accusing your wife cheating on you with Howie Roseman.
If she gets half his money and I get half of that — she can have him :). LOL.
feel like people have a wrong idea of how these free agent processes and negotiations will go… no #1 player at his position will agree to any deal and time before Tues at the earliest… the tampering period isnt even about that.
..
we arent playing to reach a deal today or tomorrow; thats unrealistic if you understand the top players we are talking abouts negotiation power, and how an agent will approach getting a player a deal..
….
Basically from now til tuesday, no offer will be agreed on, especially if we look at some of the top options…what we are “playing for” the next few days is that by the end of monday we need to have made one of the best current offers and what yuo strive for these next few days is to get the player you covet to choose to visit YOUR TEAM the day the market opens… its all about getting the guiy to choose you as your first visit. when that happens, then it becomes important that you make him a deal that will keep him from going to visit the next team… basically if we really want a guy like Maxwell, from now til tuesday we have to make our selves the most attractive option with the #s we are throwing around… If Maxwells first visit is the eagles… gotta do what it takes to not let him leave in a deal..
…
but guys like Max and Mac… if we dont hear good news about them agreeing to a new deal with us the next few days, nothing to get worried about… Maclin and his agent wont sign with the eagles until they find out what the best offer is from another team, then bring that figure to the eagles a few days into free agency and give them a chance to get in the price range of that deal… if we are the top options we wont have to match a terrible franchise bidding the most, but we need to get our offer close to theirs to make them choose a sexier destination and the 3rd best deal, instead of going to a horrible franchise for an extra mil or two
..
there is nothing the eagles can do to sign Mac before wednesday, so dont let the media twist you in a ball of nerves about it the next few days… read a basic negotiation book and a man in Maclins shoes would have to be financially retarded to sign before wednesday.. Max is in no rush to reach an agreememnt either… he will gladly wait to see what the best options are financially, and if he likes us more than the teams making the best offer the agent will bring that offer to us and give us a chance to get in the price range..
,..
the Mac and Max deal have no chance of getting done quickily… they hold all the negotiating power.. we dont have a play that can force their hand and the agents know it… gotta be patient to find out about Mac and Max…. but in the end, Max, Meco and Celek will all be back next year.. bet that
Be first place to visit and we have a shot. I’m not saying he’s the end all answer — but sooner or later you have to pay for talent…
he certainly #1 CB on my wish list…. i just hate going into free agency feeling like only 1 guy at a certain position can get the job done… need to have contingecies.. House is my more affordable fall back option… but Sheil probably Jinxed it… i feel confident about us signing guys like Brooks reed, House, Searcy back when no one in the media were connecting them to us… as soon as i see our media start talking about them, i get less confident that we will sign them… sheil talking about Davon House makes me less confident then when I was talking about him… lol thats how little i think of our media lol if they agree with my opinion, they suck so bad that I no longer trust my opinion LOL
if Polk and Sproles are both back next year, no chance we sign a free agent RB…. only way the eagles sign a RB is if someone poaches polk…
..
sproles is our 3rd down back, chip wont pay for at best a 2 down player, when he can draft one and pay him 500k the next 4 years..
..
Leading rusher in the NFL last year Murray made 1.7 mil…
..
roto passed along recent CJ spiller reporty, named a bunch of interested teams and pointed out that they are surprised to not see the eagles name on the spiller suitor list… makes sense, we arent paying a free agent RB
I see them waiting until late in FA and then signing a guy that hasn’t gotten the offers he likes up to that point to an incentive-laden, short-term deal with not a lot guaranteed. Stevan Ridley, coming off injury, would be a good fit. Then, regardless of who they sign, still target the position in the draft.
I think Chip wants a one cut power back who can break through arm tackles and still has some wheels to take it to the house…if only Gore was still in his prime.
So that immediately takes Ingram off of the list…………thankfully.
Who is the most like Gore, not named Gore in this FA class?
You want Gore for a year? He was still solid last year and might not cost a ton or a long deal.
I’d be better with a higher RB draft pick AND Gore for a year than I would be with Ingram for multiple years.
No, I said who is like Gore not named Gore. Would be nice to find someone of his makeup in FA that could have been buried on a depth chart but could shine here.
I know what you said, I’m just saying if you’d like a Gore type just go and get Gore for a cheap-o deal if you see a similar type dude in the draft as well.
Would be interesting to sign him for one year and at least get a glimpse of that runners style in this O
There isn’t a Gore-like in this FA class, maybe Ridley. Like MM said, might as well just grab Gore.
Jay Ajayi and David Cobb jump to my mind
Solid names both.
FA=Draft? news to me.
Sorry had draft on the mind. No need to be a smartass man
luv u
not sure how many veteran RBs are dying to run out of shotgun exclusively
I’m not sure we can trust Sproles n Polk alone. We need someone there. Maybe an early target in the draft?
You could get that and a journeyman.
http://walterfootball.com/freeagents2015RB.php
Some names of possible service down this list.
Seems like Ingram may not be a bad play. He is more a N/S guy and young.
He’s very very very very very slow. And limited in the pass game. If you put him in, the other team can key on too few possible plays.
Ahh, I knew he was a disappointment because of where he was drafted, but I thought the light turned on for him this last year. Haven’t seen much of him TBH. That slow eh?
Yeah, he’s very pokey. He was very effective when getting a steady diet of carries (which seems to not be what we’re trying to do right now) as evidenced by his production on one of my fantasy teams this year, but very limited as a player.
You were saying above to sign Gore, but you wouldn’t take Ingram?
Mark Ingram 4.53
Frank Gore 4.58
And that was Gore in his prime. He’s probably even slower now.
no idea if we have any plans on signing a Guard. dont love any of these options for us as a perfect fit, and Guard is one of the few positions you can expect to start as a rookie…..
..
on the other hand Herremans told us what chip values, OL and the QB which are the right priorities. RB and WR is irrelevant without an OL..so we are talking about a starting guard position on the OL, and OL is crucial to chip and most coaches… im not sure how much they love tobin and Barbre at RG. That Tobin was much better at LG… feel more comfortable about signing a quality OL starter to solidify our line, but if i had to bet, id say the starting Guard is drafted
Same I doubt we sign a guard
Can all of our in-house guys not suck for a 2nd year in a row if we plug them into the O-line?
I don’t think Andrew Gardner sucked, at guard at least. To me, Molk was the biggest liability. Pocket collapsed straight back into Foles every time he was in there. If the pressure is coming from the outside, Foles is adept at stepping up in the pocket, or at least he was the year before. When the pressure is straight up the middle, Foles would just continue to retreat in the pocket.
When asked to do so in the regular season, none of those backup O-linemen performed at the level they were said to be playing at all pre-season.
preseason they were playing with chemistry and cohesion with the OL lined up next to them… you ask them to jump up and face starting caliber competition lined up next to a new OL every game, you probably wont get an accurate picture of their true ability
You’re not wrong, but I’m not the guy on the team or reporting on what the team was saying that was fluffing these dudes all pre-season.
it wasnt exactly fluff… you saw them play extensively against other 2nd string players fighting for jobs and they were pretty dominant… we can not pay attention to the starters in preseason, but them backups are playing their asses off fighting for jobs..
…
i rip reporters as much as anyone, but if the only thing you get to see of our backups is them dominating opposing second string players during every preseason game, what can you really expect them to write? the one time the moron media got to see them, they looked great… how can you expect anything less then a positive report? id rip them more if they watched them play well and bashed them just because they arent name brand players
That’s the case with a lot of QBs, Brady becomes a completely different QB when you can disrupt his pocket up the middle.
he looks like Geno smith when the center is in bradys lap…and people want to lose Foles when NO QB would have done much better behind our OL mess
They all suffered a lot in pass pro, but had their good moments in run blocking. Molk was overmatched physically; Kelce gets overmatched, and he’s much better in pretty much every aspect, so I don’t think that’s likely to change too much. But he was very good at moving, just not good enough when he got there to finish the block. He did enough to open creases, but not to open the superhighways Shady seemed to need at times last year. Gardner was flat out awful at T, and didn’t improve much at G, IMO. At least at G he wasn’t playing matador every other down, but that’s pretty faint praise. I thought Tobin was the one guy that really showed that he deserved to be counted on for more than spot duty.
One of them needs to step the F up this year if we don’t sign Franklin for RG.
friggin molk lived in foles lap all year… and people want to quit on Nick, how absurd.. Brady looks like Geno Smith when he has his center in his lap
so hard to know… they were all placed in an impossible situation for young players. they were either being moved to a different spot every other week, or they found a different guy lining up next to them… i dont even know how to try and evaluate the young OL, Knowing how crucial continuity is at that position and how much chemistry is required with the man next to you…. last year was my personal disaster, not being able to enjoy atleast getting to evaluate your young depth because they were placed in such an impossible situation that you cant rationally expect to succeed.. as a former Tackle, I have an idea how Peters and Lane looked, but all our young players were playing musical chairs in the interior of our OL, i really am baffled as to how and try to evaluate our young OL because of what an extreme mess it was…. which is why i think people who want to quit on Nick after what they saw last year are flat out imbeciles.. sorry
“They do have Jaylen Watkins and Nolan Carroll already in place. Could one of those guys be an effective starter?”
If the Eagles think that is the case, they’ll show you that by their actions in free agency.
I want Mariota
#foleshalloffame
To be realistic, how many dozen CBs on this list are better than Fletcher and Williams?
http://walterfootball.com/freeagents2015CB.php
I still see hitting on a top safety as vitally more important than hitting on a top CB. There are upgrades over Fletcher and Williams down the line from Maxwell (although clearly not as good) and possibly on the roster already; where we’re bereft of any hope at upgrading safety and the talent falls off in a hurry on the free agent market. That isn’t to say that McCourty is a “must”, but there are less names at safety that’ll really help as opposed to more at CB that can.
But Maxwell, House, and McCourty is still fine!
Mark Eckel isn’t a very good reporter, but he had a good line on twitter:
Maxwell/House – Good to the last drop
He should stick with joke writing.
Still haven’t forgiven him for the LeCharles Bentley fiasco.
Agree on all of that. That second safety right now is one of those flags used in practice. I don’t think better talent at C is already on the roster though…would be nice but i’m hoping that’s not our plan.
think signing a top safety is so much more important then the top Corner… ill be sick if we dont get searcy or McCourty… i can live with a guy like house, but i need one of the top safeties in my life
Sadly, there is only one top safety… and I doubt he leaves NE.
several good ones however. Just not as many as there are good CBs.
It is weird that in years past we(I’m guilty) of clammering for that big WR at this time of the year. It became almost a ritual. Now we have JM and Huff and we’re basically quiet. I can’t wait to see JM progress. I certainly hope Mac is signed. But, if we’re all saying — a top safety and top CB (or 2) are signed, how do we sign Mac too? We still have to pay all those draft pics too. I’m not sure Mac will be possible.
I’m in the same boat. We need another guy in the mix (thanks for sucking at life Cooper), but I’m not sure it needs to be a big money dude.
Egads, I already forgot about Mr. February. LOL. It’s a shame Hank Basket(is that his name?) never worked out, I always hoped he would.
Ah, good ole’ Hank Basket.
Momahtron?
For my 3 on 3 basketball team, sure.
You can afford a top safety, corner and Mac I just think they will
Afford vs. “I’m ok in paying this much for this position” are far different concepts. They could “afford” $12 mil / year for Maclin, but it would be dumb to give him that.
If Maclin gets out of the $9 / mil range, I’m ok with letting him walk.
I’d go to 10 but any higher and I’m out
walk away is important.
So many holes in the but I would have loved b. marsh. Also poor wr. Market.
Now this is stupid.
http://www.delcotimes.com/sports/20150306/jack-mccaffery-lurie-should-limit-kellys-control-over-eagles-future
Even if Chip does things that wind up being the worst moves every, it’ll take several more seasons to get him out of town. Any of the “mistakes” he makes with the current roster will be long gone from their prime once we had a new guy running things again.
Feel free to judge any and all of Chip’s moves, I know I do, but to ask the owner to limit Chip’s latitude is dumb.
A little desperation might be in order seein’ as we are 0 for Forever. What a grandiose take for an outsider, and why insult Kelly like that?
He’s not an outside, he’s been covering the team and working in the market for a while. But even if Chip destroys the team, there is always the next chance to fix it. If you’re not going to hire a coach to do it “his way”, why hire him?
I just meant outside of the franchise. His tone was proprietary, like HC operates by consensus. But , yeah I agree. Lurie didn’t hire him to maintain the staus quo.
I think newspapers have to produce content and do so with new spins on issues. It wouldn’t surprise me if the editor dictated to his columnists for one to write a “pro-HC” article and another to write a “anti-HC” article like they’re back in debate class.
In my world, you sign maxwell and mccourty and draft a OL in the first round and a prospect QB in later rounds. Mariota tape appears he as a subpar arm. Best arm i saw imo was grayson and of course theres no talk of the Eagles targeting him at all. That man has a great throw. Of course i think they draft a rookie RB
Petty and Hundley have better arms than Grayson from what I’ve seen.
I’m not at all convinced that trading up that far is a good move (as a rule), but I think Mariota’s arm is fine for the NFL.
I respect that.
Im referring to draft breakdown tape. Watched all the top prospects three games a piece, if they had them available. Mariotas deep ball was like a line drive type of throw and i believe in two of the three i watched he only connected on 2/15 deep throws between the games, dont qoute me. His best route was the flat and short slant out. Grayson had touch and timing on his throws. Mariota had great footwork and blazing speed.
Of course im no expert but somone show me a great timing throw from mariota.
Petty i think i felt like his throwing motion was flawed. And hundley i dont remember.
Again im no expert but i think Mariotas accuracy numbers are inflated.
You’re correct in that Mariota’s accuracy numbers are inflated. But that is true of just about any college guy.
Case in point; Colt McCoy.
geno
While true, wouldn’t you say there would be a greater disparity between mariota who went entire games throwing like 5 passes greater than 20 yards, all of which looked like beams (Bullet passes, low arching bullet passes) and none that I have seen, yet, are timing throws, than say other Qbs in college who throw a more variety of passes?
And that’s disrespectful to Colt, Like of course all college QBs numbers are inflated in general, but he is a pretty accurate QB.
He threw for 71% cmp percentage with the redskins last year and has more TDs than interceptions in his career. He threw 60% with the browns. My eye test informed me that he has a decent NFL arm. His vision I thought was his issue.
Ced ain’t going anywhere. 2nd round tender from Eagles.
If we trade up for Mariota, do we hope somebody signs Ced to get that pick back?
interesting… eliminates all free agent DL’s… what we plan on doing about vinny Curry is the other part of how this all plays out… keeping Thornton means you need an interior pass rusher behind him… if we know we are trading Curry or losing him after the year, maybe we put less value on a OLB who can drp back like Brooks reed since we will have a plethora of LBs that can drop into coverage anyway next year, and maybe we switch and priorize an OLB like McPhee, who can line up and pass rush from every spot, no matter how we line up on 3rd down… if we plan on losing Currys pass rush that compensates for thorntons lack there of, maybe we go with an OLB who can also line up as a 4-3 DT next to Cox on 3rd down and pass rush from the interior, like a pernell McPhee…
…
wish we knew what this franchise has planned for Vinny, it would make the picture much clearer
Let Ced sign with another team and get a 2nd. Trade Curry for a pick as well. Assume Hart gets in the rotation this year. Sign McPhee.
Could work……….especially if the possible trade up for Mariota eats up too many picks.
This year’s draft is pretty strong in 3-4 defensive linemen. There are also a lot of FA options. I doubt any team would be willing to give up a 2nd for him. Very good run defender, but almost no pass rush. Not out of the realm of possibility that Eagles could work out a trade with another team for less compensation.
In that case, easy to keep him here for the 2nd round tender. I was just pointing out that I’d take the 2nd rounder for him if a team (like Indy!) really needed to get more stout vs. the run and signed him.
A team that could really use him, perhaps as part of a move up package, is Tennessee.
true.,.. i would happily lose Ced for a 2nd rd pick..
,..
i wonder if going forward with a voltron forming 3down DE tandem of Curry and Ced is wise, when we could scrap both and add a 3down DE who can two gap on 1st and 2nd, but also stay on the field in 3rd down pass rush like Jared Odrick…. for this reason i find it hard to believe we pass on arik Armstead if he is near the top of our draf board when its our turn to pick
GEAGLE – I’ve figured it out…You said you are a former Tackle – one who know’s so much about football and is a former Tackle…Hmmm…OMG you are Andy Reid!!!
lol God NO… im fundamentally against “taco tuesdays lol”…. and this is probably the only time anyone will ever confuse me for a mormon 🙂
I don’t think McPhee is a fit. Other than being a strong pass rusher that the QB is always accounting for, he isn’t suitable as a decoy rusher, and he wouldn’t create that half-second of doubt that Kelly and Davis value. At least Curry can 2-gap when situation calls for it, but McPhee would be a potted plant at OLB – if not rushing QB or plugging a lane.
2nd round tender is only $1.5 mill I think. Don’t think it changes options since we rotate the line anyway. That’s said agree I don’t think we’re getting one of the studs 🙁
That’s the original round tender. 2nd round tender is around $2.3M.
Good, if you want to be a good team you need to keep a hold of your good, young players. I never understood why people were so quick to toss away Ced, just to sign a Haloti Ngata to a huge contract that injuries and age makes insanely risky.
I expect a strong showing from the Eagles in FA, but a thing to remember is we need an even stronger showing towards our own FAs. Its soon gonna be that time where we have to lock up Cox and Kendricks and depending on some different circumstances, Boykin and Foles. Dont let talent escape, like we might do with Maclin because we didn’t lock him up earlier. Dont let talent get to FA, where their bargaining position is strong.
there have been so many comments on each page i may have missed it, kind of surprised i havent seen everyone roasting that Jackass heath evans or whatevr that idiots name is… he majorly trashed chip on local radio..ripped trading shady for a small, undersied injured LB..he said he basically disagrees with everything chip believes in fundamentally,.. how is a moron allowed on our local airways? we have enough homegrown media morons, we def dont need to be poaching the dumbest National guys to pollute our fans brains.
..
what a turd… old boys football network turd just like Bruce Arians.; chip gets on my damn nerves but i hope he embarrasses all the old boys network that he goes up against….
Bro, he was a fullback. That means that he to begin with was a marginally talented football player who just happened to be a size/skillset guy for a position nobody wants to play and is now dead in even pro football.
He then took his sparingly small sense of intelligence and punished it by getting hammered for 10 years by real football players.
Did you honestly expect him to say anything valuable? The fact that he is coherent(which is a stretch) is impressive. I’d hire a gorilla or a orangutang before Heath Evans.
The National guys just can’t keep up with every bit of news on every team, so every time they analyze things, they fuck up. It annoys me too that they get local attention. If you want to be national, do what Schefter and Glazer does, report news and what your sources tell you, never put in your opinion. Its so dangerous doing the other thing, even Mayock who spends the entire year preparing for the 3 draft heavy months, gets every team perfect.
LOL a fullback… no shit he doesnt agree with chip, our coach doesnt even believe in his position LOL which means chip practically views him as a worthless football player outside of ST lmao
..
good post
Chips got the right idea then. I hate that guy with a passion. Not a single thing he says is anywhere close to a conceivable point. Every single time i happen to see something he said, I feel the only respons should be the quote from Billy Madison. He brings nothing to anything, and is the perfect example of why just because you played in the NFL, it doesn’t mean you understand the game or have the abilities to explain, analyze or critique current situations in the league.
The fact that he is a smart-ass doesn’t help. I can forgive a commentator calling our play a read option, when in fact it was just a handoff from the shotgun. It goes quick, he doesn’t follow the Eagles and it doesn’t really matter. Except when you try to explain the play and tell me why it was wrong to do, and still fuck it up, to tell Chip: hey college, welcome to the big league. Motherf***** shut your mouth, before Chippah pimpslaps the living shit out of you.
It’s OK to disagree, but at least have 2 braincells left when you try to explain yourself, because Chip didn’t pull it out of his ass.
In closing, all the worst to Heath Evans, may his ass itch and his arms be short
so true!!! im just baffled that the friggin NFL network cant do any better than that baboon”? id rather hear what friggin Mike Mamula or some Hack has to say than that donkey… he shouldnt be a media member in some small po donk town, let alone national NFL network… who the hell is he blackmailing? think he was given this job because he threatened to show the world how screwed up his brain is from concussions, so to keep it quiet, NFL just gave this moron a job
Im international, so I dont get NFLN in a regular package. I buy it for the draft, because if want to follow it without lag/in HD, and like listening to Mike Mayock. I can’t really give my opinion fairly, but from what I seen, its not a channel I would spend my money on.
I would however pay money for the Tommy Lawlor Eagles channel. If Bill Gates ever needs a new way to spend his cash, that would be my suggestion, right in front of paying to have Heath Evans abducted by aliens. But i guess actual inside and analysis of the NFL, isn’t what the NFL Network is looking for when you can cater to new viewers by discussing Manti Teo or Tim Tebow.
I could be wrong, but your overthetop reaction, and the vituperous, venomous vitriol that you spew re: media tools with whom you don’t agree is all the evidence executive producers need to justify hiring those guys.
People don’t care about Heath Evans. If he ever showed one iota of intelligence and competent analysis, then his opinion about Kelly might be worthy of debate. He hasn’t and he is a waste of breath or risk of carpal tunnel syndrome by typing. I am seriously questioning why I’m bothering to write this right now.
Jimmy Bama seriously questions if Maclin’s worth overpaying for:
The Eagles want to sign Maclin, and Maclin wants to stay. However, is it worth paying a receiver with two torn ACLs to his credit and only one 1000+ yard season that occurred in the new coach’s high octane offense, in the ballpark of, oh, say, $10-12 million per year?
Jeremy Maclin is good. Is he THAT good? If that’s the price tag, the Eagles might be better served to let Maclin go play elsewhere.
Follow Jimmy on Twitter: @JimmyKempski
No, he’s not THAT good. Take 5 years / $45 on the Cooper contract structure………or congratulation on your big money deal with a new team.
If we only kept DeSean… I kid I kid…
I’m going to leave that alone because I’m not in a mood to argue with the entire board again………….but I’m a DeSean guy.
So was DeSean
I feel you. Just for the fun of it though: what would have been his cap hit this and next year???
Smart man.
I totally agree with Jimmy on that one. There are positions where I’m ok to overpay, simply to fix the position. WR is the position where I absolutely DON’T want to overpay.
I’d like Maclin to be back, but if someone is offering him 10+m per year, good for him. Good luck (honestly).
I have been coming around to the idea personally. I think the stream of quality WR’s comming out of college now will long term ‘devalue’ the position, considering you need 3-4 on your roster.
There is some serious talent in this draft – especially at pick 20 where someone like Devante Parker could fall to 20, and DGB has wow potential (if he is on their draft board at all). Would be happy with Perryman or Strong at 20, and there are options in the 2nd-4th round that could come in and play.
The only thing they’ll miss with a rookie added to the roster and Maclin gone is the toe tap ability on sideline routes.
The rookie won’t be anywhere near Maclin obviously, but you have to project increased production from Matthews and Huff.
only thing? how bout the implications of taking veteran Mac away from a young developing QB and give him a rookie and coop on the outside? crazy if you ask me
There were a number of very productive rookie wrs last year.
jordan mathews was productive,… you dare to go into next year with Coop, Jordan in year 2, and a rookie who gives us what Jordan gave us last year? with NO QUality proven outside NFL WR? No franchise back…and Marriotta? what the hell are we going to spend on defense for if everyone wants to make us into a rebuilding team on offense? Our OL aint right, we weaker at RB, Even with Mac, coop is a weak #2… yet people want to take more weapons away from young developing QBs? interesting… but i guess sammy, Mike Evans and ODB where great as rookies… remind me how many wins they carried their teams to as rookies? you think you will giet someone even better then them who is so good that he can overcome Coop on the other side, and have us play with a rookie or a QB with only 24 games
..
guess im just shocked that people are OK with not contending next year
I think Foles, or Mariota for that matter, would be fine with a mix of Matthews, Huff, rookie, Cooper, journeyman, Celek, Ertz, and/or RBs to throw to.
thats insane… you people need to make your minds up what you are trying to accomplish..
..
on one hand you all want the next dream team free agency so we can instantly contend, and on the other hand you willing to go into next season with a rookie QB, no shady, no mac, no Desean.. riley cooper and a rookie you havent even seen practice a day yet?
…
wtf are yous trying to accomplish? you want the free agent splash, then you are a contender next year… you want to take 2 steps back next year in year 3 with a young QB and unproven Wr corp around him? I dont understand.
..
all the same people are ok with going into a season with less weapons then we have had at any point since chip arrived, yet the same people are going to rip chip a new one if he doesnt win in year 3
GEagle – All Chip needs is a very good QB and excellent OL and he can make the offense work. What he will not abide is a porous D that kills morale and costs games.
Matthews, Huff, Rookie
maybe if we had a veteran QB he had a point… you paid cooper who busted, you have Maehl and two second round players who have shown us nothing that would let us think they are ready to handle outside Wr spots full time…
..
if our QB options are Marriotta or Foles… i think we have to be braindead to take maclin away from eithers development…. great rookies in the draft, NONE that a young player can count on like Maclin next year
..
if we are starting Sanchez, he is a veteran, and cant throw far enough to use Maclin anyway, then yeah jimmy might have a point.
..
but when im watching us with 50mil,and a coach who wants to draft his guys 3 rounds early just so he can make sure he gets them, i think people are nuts to think chip will rather not overpay a mil or two to lose Maclin
..
if chip strips this offense of Mac, Desean, Shady, while the one person he paid was cooper, im going to die laughing
May be time to get your tissues ready….
thats what you think… give me my defense and ya’ll can do whatever collegey crap you want on offense..
..
LOL maybe the people who think chip will pay insane money to other teams players before they pay Maclin should be getting their tissues ready.
..
how many times do I have to tell you, Mac, Celek, Meco stay, truth is, i dont give a shit who the last two are gone, but they will be here….. Just say “Ok” and leave it at that so i can not type it again 🙂
..
no better way to piss on your locker room than make a popular player PROVE IT, and then fuck him cuz he PROVED IT TOO MUCH!!!.. sure that looks great for Jordan Mathews… unless all of the sudden the “culture” chip spent two years building no longer is more important than “scheme”
set an excellent example for Jordan Mathews… work your ass off kid, keep working, dedicate yourself to the eagle way, become GREAT, just do us a favor and dont become Too Great so we dont have to lose you when we dont want to pay… not to mention Maclin took him under his wing when Jordan was a threat to Maclins future on a contract year…what are you teaching jordan? dont help out young players or youw ill end up fucked like Maclin?
exactly. that’s the bill belicheck way.
Crickets? That shut that down I guess!!!…….NEXT?!?!
Somebody posted previously that an overpay has a ripple effect and can cause morale issues. Overpaying on your #2 (5M/yr with 8M guaranteed) is probably not raising any ire among the ranks, but if Mac cannot sign for 10M/yr and Eagles cave, Fletcher Cox will rightfully expect 120M w/30M guaranteed. 10 million is fair for Mac IMO, but none of us have a sense of the conditions, bonus, out-clauses, etc. I’d hate to see him walk, but I’d wish him well playing for whoever is going to pony up.
This is setting up to be a big FA year for the Eagles. First poster that uses the ‘Drea_ T___’ phrase gets dipped in honey, buried in sand, and fed to army ants.
Pump your fists…
Can we just order Vince Young to kill himself and call it even?
Nowhere near enough to call that even. He would need to start for the ‘Boys in place of Romo going 0-16 first.
But Vince Young killing himself would be a great start.
That’s kinda wrong…
So is quitting on Jeff Fisher and throwing your pads off after you’re (rightfully) benched by being a sucky QB.
OK that totally warrants saying that him killing himself would be great
dream team isn’t even clever smart posters are going with redeem team.
I have a another blockbuster trade i think the Eagles could try…..
Justin Houston.
It looks like there is very limited interest in him staying long term with the Chiefs and they are not in a position to realistically contend this year. Cap situation is not great for them, and while they obviously couldn’t let him leave for free if they dont think they could lock him up it makes a degree of sense.
Barwin – Kiko – Kendricks – Houston
Sorry will need to get some tissues for that.
i wish…
Rather than trade for the dude, just ink him to a deal. The two 1s might wind up being less than what KC asks for.
If KC wants even 1st you walk on by. That is too much to pay for a 1 year rental who is getting $13mil, possibly.
All depends on if KC thinks they can get a long term deal. Everything i have read or seen looks like he wants out, and once Suh’s monster contract goes down they may sit there and think its time to cash in rather than letting him walk next year.
Two firsts plus like $15m a year.
So unless the Chiefs accept the Eagles’ 1st round picks in 2018 and 2019 I don’t see Houston coming to Philly after the Eagles trade away their next three 1st round picks for Mariota…
Tamba hali can still get sacks.
I’d trade for Hali if they price wasn’t too much.
Because they’re weak at WR, how about Riley Cooper and a 6th?
And yes, the Cooper part of the deal isn’t supposed to be taken seriously.
Hali will either restructure with KC or be cut.
http://overthecap.com/player/tamba-hali/531/
You’d only be on the ringer for $8.75 mil if you trade for him. I’d be temped to do so and see after the fact if I could rework his deal.
DeSean Jackson signed a 4 year / $24,000,000 contract with the Washington Redskins, including a $5,000,000 signing bonus, $16,000,000 guaranteed, and an annual average salary of $6,000,000.
Anyone thinks Maclin’s new contract is coming close to that???
Eagles cut him after most of the FA money was spent. Pretty soon, we’ll all be reading about him crying about renegotiating his contract.
i’d be crying too that’s riley cooper $$, he carried that team last year.
Should have signed a 1-year deal then.
Cooper, yes!
Maybe.
I WAS just trying to point out that they might be significantly overpaying for someone who’s buying in…
no doubt
No, isn’t that similar to what he turned down last year?
I thought it was 3 years

Intriguing team preparing to make a run at #Lions DT Ndamukong Suh: The #Chargers. Wow.
peyton manning coming back for another year, they’ll never make the playoffs.
my money is on the dolphins… chargers is interesting destination tho
eagles discussing bringing in tavaris jackson. kelly doesn’t want mobile guys??
LOL who reported that? elliot Parks?
geoff mosher, more reliable but none of these stories are “reliable”
yeah, unfortunately its Lying season
Mosher is a hack!
Let’s raise a glass to the Eagles beat(nik) writers.
It dont think it was ever about whether Chip wanted a mobile QB, but whether if he needed it.
God I hope not we will be going into the season with Mariota and Jackson….
I think Jackson is a good option. He played too early as a rookie but he’s been good when called upon since then. Probably come cheaper than a Sanchez and could likely produce similar results.
I think he sucks.
Better or worse than Joe Webb?
Much worse.
If you go with the theory that Kelly wants a backup with a somewhat similar style to the starter (i.e. Sanchez for Foles), then maybe Jackson makes sense if Mariota is assumed to be the starter.
Chipper wants a guy who’s 6’3 and runs a 4.4.
to play WR?
Just saw a Dolphins beat writer hearing rumblings of Eagles taking another shot at Dion Jordan! If we can’t sign BG!
shocker…. vinny for Dion will be announced by monday, made official by tuesday 🙂
hahah chip is like fuck drafting players. dolphins have no use for curry you gotta find another player to trade.
How about Matt Barkley? (his bobble head is on sale)
Don’t love giving up Vinny, but Dion would be a cheap solution at OLB with massive upside if he has kicked the crystal meth! would leave more cash for DB’s.
Hate giving up Vinny, but he’s just not a perfect fit for our scheme. Same deal with BG, love Grizzle, but he is meant for a 4-3.
vinny curry is my favorite eagle after Fletcher Cox… kills me every time i have to have this discussion…we cant offer him what 4-3 teams will to be a 3down DE. we lose him after this year…rather have a compensatory pick two years from now, or young Dion signed to a rookie deal for 3 more years who fits our scheme so if he works out we can actually extend him longterm unlike Vinny?
.,..
losing vinny will kill me no matter what we get in return… but it needs to be done
Vinny has more trade value than Jordan at this point. Cheaper, more productive. Besides, no actual Miami beat writer posted that on twitter. It was just some fan on the internet.
dont push it, doubt chip will
..
when you guys talk about this trade value, just like in the shady trade, need to factor into the equation their contracts have on their value of the trade..
..
for example shady cost 11mil, kiko cost under a mil… shady is a million times better then Kiko in terms of on the field value for next year, but the prices of those two, opposite extremes are what balances out the value and makes it a fair trade..
..
Sure Curry is more valuable then Dion on the field today, but we have to ask the Dolphins to eat dead money to trade us the player we want, so THAT gets factored into the value..Basically its not Curry for Dion, Its we will trade them Curry, for Dion and them eating X amount of dead money…and considering we dont have to eat half the dead money they do trading Vinny.. there values even out
..
btw, maybe your point warrents a discussion normally, but not when it comes to Chip and Dion..he been trying to get this kid for YEARS. we have seen him willing to draft ducks 3 rounds earl;y to make sure he gets them… you can bet your ass he wont dick around playing hardball with the Dolphins over a dion trade. Chip will look at it like, I get the Kid i adore at a crucial position, who fits our scheme so we can justify paying him enough to extend him long term, for Curry who is my favorite player but cant be in philly past this year because we cant pay him half of what 4-3 teams will offer him to be a 3 down DE..
..
Chip gets Dion friggin Jordan, for a Kid Curry, who we all know we will lose next year due to his contract and our scheme.. chip wont push his luck crying over an extra 5th round pick…
..
Dion has a 5th year option since he was drafted in round 1, we would have him under contract for 3 years while dolphins have to pay curry big money next year to keep him,. that also evens out there values.
..
For GMs its not as simple as Curry is better tooday, so we should get more then Dion…alot of other things effect the values of these trades,… BTW, we know Chip is going to do things HIS WAY, they wont always be the way we are used to everyone doing them,..
..
3 years of Dion or 1 year of Curry? no brainer for chip unless he plans on switching to a 4-3 next week
i’m already heading down to TB to pick up Evans, i’ll swing by and grab DJ.
Dibs on shotgun!
sorry, no room. only have a jeep cherokee, and need 3 seats for the strippers! showing up in philly smiling
The Denver Post’s beat writer for the Broncos re-tweeted the info about Thornton receiving a 2nd round twitter and said the Broncos could have interest.
nice! they are moving to a 3-4 and need players.
hate to lose Ced, but 2nd rd pick for him seems like a steal.
Don’t want to lose Ced, he’s a key guy on our line. Even for a 2nd.
someone keep me posted if they hear anything about Virgil Green… we need him!!
FOR FUCKS SAKE CHIP, THE TAMPERING PERIOD IS MINUTES, MINUTES!!!!!!!!! OLD AND YOU HAVENT CONFIRMED MAXWELL AND MCCOURTY.
#CHIPOUT!!!!
I’ll have some Maxwell House with a shot of McCourty.
Irish coffee ftw.
yusss!
Andre Holmes (6’4, 210) given original round tender by oakland, payment of $1.45m, he was a udfa so not sure if we’d have to give up picks…
Holmes a sleeper depth guy, he has some legit talent.
we are losing Brad Smith, Holmes would be an Excellent replacement
**BREAKING NFL NEWS**
Eagles already in touch with Devin McCourty’s agent Chip wants this done quick come Tuesday #IBN
Really?
Incarcerated Bob is a hack
LOL I can’t believe that guy hasn’t been incarcerated for good by now.
no idea who yous are even talking about. cant be that great of a source
I’m hearing BG to NYG anyone seeing that on twitter?
Only thing I’ve seen is they’ve been in touch with his agent. Not surprising.
Be a lot of $ tied up at defensive end for them with JPP on the franchise tag next year
Graham and JPP is no where close to an elite pair but if they’re paying 21mil for the 2 of them you’d expect them to be hah
Texans re-signed OT Derek Newton to a 5-year deal. He was a guy I thought may be a fit for us at RG. It was earlier reported that they were in active negotiations to re-sign Newton and Kareem Jackson. Hope Jackson doesn’t get locked up.
Ian Rapoport @RapSheet 35s36 seconds ago
Big numbers for #Texans OT Derek Newton: 5 years at $26.5M with $10M guaranteed. $13.75M in first 2 years and $17M in first 3 years
Keep in mind when you see “guaranteed” amounts is that sometimes that guarantee is only for injury and not for skill and injury. If it’s guaranteed for skill and injury, then the player gets the money irregardless. If it’s only for money, then the player only gets the money if he gets hurt.
guard market could be then, wonder if we’re riding with molk.
Newton played RT for them and that position is naturally payed more. I thought he could fit at RG for us. I’d take Gardner and Tobin at RG over Molk. I know Mariota can run, but he’d have to dodge Molk being thrown right at him the defensive lineman.
I didn’t think Molk played really well for us when he was filling in last year, I’d hate to think he was plan A.
I especially don’t like the idea of Molk next to Kelce. Love Kelce, but if he has one draw back (maybe not even draw back, but his mediocre aspects) it is his size/power/anchoring. If you put Molk next to him, yikes, predicting defensive game plans would be easy at least. Probably looking at Barbre/Tobin/Gardner/random rookies before Molk, if for nothing else besides complementing Kelce more.
Really am not interested in Jackson. He is towards the bottom of the list of CBs. Would take House over him in a second. Jackson is young, but really not that good and I think is over rated at times due to his draft position. Highly inconsistent too.
derek Newton? why dont i know who that is? drawing a complete blank
I really wish NFL would allow visits during this stupid legal tampering period, instead we’re just stuck with 3 days of a bunch of information with 80% of it being false or misdirections and smoke screens.

Texans making run at WR Randall Cobb and Jeremy Mackin to replace Andre Johnson. Expect them 2 target Torrey Smith, 2.
He misspelled Maclin, but McClain is one of the better reporters out there.
Agreed on McClain, but are the Texans that desperate for a WR? It’s 3 fairly different types
Mac is talking with Texans
Sorry, Houston players allowed to go to Philly, the other direction is not permissible
doesnt matter… whatever Maclins favorite deal is, he will take it to the eagles on Tuesday or wednesday and give us a chance to get in the ball park of that offer. he wont make us match every penny, we will get a few dollars less then what his top offer is but not a major discount.
..
i have no idea why people are worried baout losing MACLIN.. he is literally doing exactly what him and his agent should be doing…nothing has happened that should make philly start to worry about losing him,.,. Maclin and his agent are doing exactly what they should be doing considering the cards they have in their hand and the crap hand the eagles have…. nothing bad or discouraging has happened yet…there should be no eagle fan who feels any less confident that we can sign him then we were 3 weeks ago… as soon as we decided not to tag him, this was the course his agent had to take..btw, not tagging him is probably good faith gesture for two sides that both expect this to get it done(this isnt a guarantee, but i wouldnt rule it out, both sides sound amicable still)
..
nothing wrong with Maclin taking his time, to play his hand correctly giving him the best chance to get the best deal from the Eagles… if his agent would have accepted ANY offer for us, considering the great cards he has in his hand, he should be fired on the spot
..
there is no reason for anyone to be negative about the Maclin negotiations yet… if the Texans offer 15-16mil a year, thats when we worry… right now, we are still on course to get this done.
Hope everyone has been watching the Flyers today, they have played well and have a chance for a huge W!
Until now
EFFFFFFFFF! Terrible call!!!
Edit: on further review may have been a teeny tiny trip
Dammit
Every time they seem like they can get some traction they blow it. 14 secs – you gotta be kidding me!
And now for a 3 game skid
I want to die, that was terrible, wave bye bye to the playoffs. 14 effing seconds
You jinxed it.
I’m sorry
Flyers were robbed of Patrick Kane.
Then compounded that bit of bad luck by trading JVR.
Love this franchise. But so much remodeling needs to be done.
And right now, this year’s team can’t stand success.
I know, a major rebuild is longgg overdue. And, fortunately I believe Hextall does too. This years team has been the most schizophrenic Flyers team I think I’ve ever seen. And I hate to think we will be wasting Giroux and Voreceks’ primes of their careers on a rebuild… Sad face
saint cutting patrick robinson who plays inside outside slot is 5’11, 190
Not cutting him. He’s an UFA.
ahh, not re-signing
He’s so not that good…started to play a little better this year after getting benched and put into Nickle role
Brace yourselves everyone, the Eagles are going to sign a slew of mid-range FA’s, rather than a handful of blockbuster guys, because Chippah isn’t going to want to overpay.
Maclin is going to walk, We’ll pick up Andre Holmes to replace him.
We’ll sign 2 mid-tier corners.
Mccourtey is the only guy I think is going to be a big acquisition.
andre holmes s 6’4 210, chip has to solve the red zone issues — that’s how you do it
he doesnt cost a draft pick to poach… id love to replace Brad smith with Dre
I’d love to get Smith but I think the only reason he didn’t get a higher tender is that the Raiders know they can match any offer. If you’re the Raiders, you basically let another team do your negotiating for you. I think pursuing him would be a waste of effort.
i just want to change this coombaya bullshit of not going after RFA’s… ESPECIALLY in our division… say the raiders were in our division and like you said they are ready to just match whatever offer…OK, JACK THAT PRICE UP!! we should be going after our rivals RFA’s even if its just to be a prick and make them pay a little more…especially if we will always carry over 10 plus mil of Cap, who cares if they tie up our money for a week if we wont spend it anyway
that’s what i’d do.
“We’ll sign 2 mid-tier corners.”
_____________
Who’s out there who fits that description and Kelly’s H/W reqts at CB?
Davon House? He’s close but shorter than Kelly’s ideal.
Walter Thurmond? Read he’s available (is that right?).
Who else?
(Your suggestions seem sound, BTW)
This off season will be interesting. Byron Maxwell is a guy we will probably have to horrifically over-pay to play good football and would be a contract we look at every year after and wonder if the Eagles are going to pay it, and it will be a surprise if we get a player across from him to play for more than a stop-gap solution. I don’t think we have a long-term solution in the works for CB any time soon (particularly if we do get MM, we won’t have have the draft capital to address it with any degree of certainty for the longer term without having some serious luck and develop a mid or later round guy).
Amazingly though, we have a real chance of finally having a real fix at the safety tandem (worth their money and for 2 or 3 years) for the first time since Dawk left. And maybe that is what can carry the secondary.
Thurmond is loved in Duckville but has been hurt. Not sure Kelly would consider him given his stats but Duck bias maybe? House is much better IMHO.
andre Holmes is restricted.. i wouldnt mind going after him, but he would replace Brad smith, NOT Maclin….dont believe the hype, Maclin is going no where… its just the media is too simple to understand negotiation leverage so the longer it lasts the more they assume the worst with Maclin when in reality he wont sign with ANYONE a day before next wednesday. you wont even see him sign on tuesday..weds or Thurs Mac will sign… dont let the negotiation process needing to unfold, using leverage to advantage to let our dumb media make us think we will lose Mac just because it hasnt happened yet… anyone who understands agents, and leverage knows there is no way we could ever get Mac to sign before the open market, he literally has no reason to, he has all the leverage and he will use it….doesnt mean it will end with him no longer an Eagle
Not a long time ago us Eagles fans could brag about having three young and fast playmakers on offense causing headaches for opposing defense coordinators.
Now the day may come soon when all 3 will be gone…
To be replaced by a schematic headache – we hope.
Yes in Chip we trust, innit?!
I still find it kinda sad to see those faces of the late franchise disappear.
It’s a weird time in Eagleland for sure, so much roster turnover these last few years, no one even knows who the QB will be. Seems like we lack identity in terms of players, now we have identity in terms of scheme.
The next Eagles jersey I might get will have ‘Scheme’ on its back…
You are absolutely right. Chip used scheme to compete with schools who had recruiting leverage. It remains to be seen if he needs top talent (cap dollars) to achieve success in the NFL.
chill with the kool aid… no one is winning anything having significantly less talent then their opponent… chip isnt the only person with decent football schemes or who has valued culture at the NFL level,. believe it or not
To be fair, this is a bit ironic coming from you 🙂
Two winning records and young defenders that are much better then most people expected say I’m a realist!! Kid I believe in is 14-4, never lost 2 in a row, should be 16-2 if the defense make two extra plays.., I’d say my optimism has proven realistic, more then most atleast
Lol if chip loses desean, shady, and Mac..out of all the talent we had, he breaks the piggy bank open for Riley friggin Cooper, we should make him walk to Oregon Naked…., if that Happens, he should be sentenced to death by one of the most gruesome forms of execution in the history of earth, Viking execution ritual of “Blood Eagle”… If you know what that is, you rock!!! 😉
.,
From philly Eagle to Viking “blood eagle” LMAO
secretly turns out dan snyder was paying him the whole time.
Hold the F up… last year the Brown poached restricted Free agent andrew Hawkins away from the Bengals? Now the Browns are trying to poach restricted WR Andre Holmes, who wont even cost a draft pick to poach away? I wouldnt mind placing a bid on Andre Holmes, 6’4 215lb WR from the Raiders.. probably be cheap…. and if the browns are being scumbags going after teams RFA’s when no one else really does that, why the hell arent we signing Browns Restricted safety Tashuan Gipson to an offer sheet trying to poach him? good chance Browns match us but so what, who cares?
..
the only down side about putting a bid on an RFA is his team will take the full week to decide to match or not..so they usually end up matching in the end and making you tie up your money for a week waiting for the answer while other free agents get signed and we get stuck missing out on them
..
but we all know the eagles arent spending more then 30mil, they will still have an extra 20mil left over after free agency, so who cares if the Browns tie our money up for a week? its not like we will spend it all..
…
tired of the colluding to make RFA nonexistent.. start going after teams young players, force them to pay up, or give up some young talent
Just watching Jets vs Pats on NFLN and I must admit that I really like what Vereen brings to the table. He could be part of our RB by committee and also an option in the passing game should the Eagles pass on overpaying for Maclin.
doubt we would pay Vereen AND sproles. too similar
OLB Dannell Ellerbe released
Making room for Suh
knew miami was a lock for suh
The NFL and NFLPA need to do something about the unfair advantage the Florida and Texas teams receive in recruiting FAs due to the lack of state income tax there. There need to be a cap adjustment for each team based on the tax levels and cost of living in each city.
You can’t do much about it unfortunately
You could pay all the players through the NY office -but there’s NO WAY that’s happening either. You’d get every other state screaming about the loss of a few million in revenues.
i know its a joke… thats exactly how i knew he would end up in Miami… 100mil dollar deal?> you can bet TAXES MATTER… it was always between Miami and Jacksonville, aka Dolphins were always a lock for Suh… they need to trade for Vinny Curry… Suh in the middle, Curry and Cameron Wake flying off the edge…we talking about a DL that puts them on the MAP and allows them to compete against the Pats… The dolphins wont win the QB battle against the Pats, so they have to become better then the pats in other areas.. dominjating the line of scrimage and beating up brady is a great start
wow that’s a pretty steep pay difference, i see why new york teams are based in nj or conn.
The Dolphins are at $15.6 million in cap space now with Ellerbe’s release.
If Miami, signs Suh the teams won’t have much left beyond the rookie pool.
Speaking of Miami, it’s cheaper for them to keep Dion Jordon than to trade him . . . the way Cooper is cheaper this year on the roster than off.
Jordan’s cap-hit on the roster $5.6 M. If he’s traded before 6/1, Miami’s cap hit is $6.6.
Where else can Miami find cap space without turning into the Bucs?
who cares about a cap hit if you can get an top young 4-3 DE one of the most valuable hardest positions to fill, for a kid you are getting NOTHING out of?
…
its like saying we would turn down acquiring Mike Evans..because we dont want to take the cap hit trading Riley Cooper for him… MONEY WELL SPENT…its a great deal for both teams…and since the dolphins have to eat the money, THATS exactly why they would only have to trade Dion for a better player in Curry without having to also give us a 5th round pick,,, when everyonbe cries about vinny being worth more then dion, not when you have to ask miami to eat 5mil to get the guy we have tried to trade for since chip became a coach… the cap hit they eat is why the get Curry without giving us more value
I’m not arguing against the move.
Been on the Dion wagon since Draft Day 2013.
I’m just wondering where Miami can find more space.
swear the salary cap is a joke. starting to think its a figment of our imagination, some crap owners and Ms came up with to justify not spending to try and build the best team possible… for years I see teams in Cap hell operate without a care in the world, just pulling money out their ass whenever they need it..and every 6 years they pay the piper and cut a few players… then they go back to doing whatever the hell they want for the next 5 years again.. the cowboy way…
..
I hate trading Vinny Curry. I hate it, it kills me and it will haunt me for the rest of his career..I already know it. Im not going to lie its a trade I want to happen because of the curry contract conondrum awaiting us around the corner…but I talk about it like this because its something I actually truley expect to happen.. time is running out for this trade… now is the time to do this deal… plus im sure the drug program has soured Miami on Dion. but we’ll see
FYMTGE.
Dion in midnight green.
That trade up by Ireland still rankles — even though LJ is a beast
Edge rushers are like GOLD in the NFL. I just think this is a unique opportunity for an afc and Nfc team to help each other tremendously. Not only fixing draft mistakes that can’t be corrected due to scheme, but it leaves each team with an extremely talented young edge rusher that fits each team like a glove.. Edge rusher is so Damn expensive, if a team will eat a cap hit to grab a player it would make sense to do it for an Edge rusher who is still on his rookie deal… If you want an elite edge rusher like Justin Houston, bidding starts at 50mil.. 5mil cap hit to get a year of super cheap talented edge rusher curry who is ready to explode when you put him in a 4-3 is a very smart investment when we talking about how you have to overdraft to get edge rushers or get stuck paying a ton in free agency. What’s 5mil to go from bad fit to elite fit with a young player at one of the 3 most expensive positions? Sunday like a great investment to me. Vinny isn’t in the drug program like Dion… Vinny even has the sack numbers without barely playing. I wish we could get an OLB version of curry
Tannenbaum’s a master on the cap.
You’ve said that yourself.
Could play in favor of your proposal.
All I know is no matter how it happens, losing Curry will kill me… Be nice to soften the blow to get some young talent in return.., think that will hurt less then it will to add him to a compensatory pick equation and get a pick 2 years later. Curry is too valuable of a player to lose for a comp pick. It doesn’t even have to be the Dolphins, just get something of value for me to have to watch them jettison my favorite eagle. Hate this….I know it needs to be done tho
Miami has 3 players with a Cap total for 2015 of $22 million . . . and a Cap Hit of $7 million.
Tannehill ($4M / $4M) — FA in 2016
Pouncey ($7M / 0 ) — FA in 2016
Wake ($11M / 2.8 M)
Savings there if Miami wants to resign/restructure.
They’ll probably backload it and they released Wheeler
Savings on Wheeler, I think, is only $200,000.
But Tannenbaum’s working hard to clear room. No question.
uhhhh and wheeler..;. not sure what that means about Dions status in Miami..
ellerbe over ratred, he got paid and mailed it in
Texans re-signed CB Kareem Jackson to 4-year deal. Will be interesting to see what his numbers come in at.
Also, Colts showing interest in S Devin McCourty
🙁
GR:
Great reporting, as always.
If all it took to be a reporter was to copy from twitter.
You may be on to something . . .
You take the time to look and share.
It’s appreciated.
Jackson’s deal included $20M in guarantees. Update – averaged $8.5M a year. 4 years, $34M deal. Now keep in mind that $20M might not be fully guaranteed. A portion of it might be guaranteed for injury only. Still, I expect Maxwell to get closer to a $10M per year average if Jackson got $8.5M. No state income taxes in Texas have to be factored in though.
wow
Yep if the Eagles offered that exact contract he probs would take it
jmatt’s tweet — it is what it is….
thoughts?
We’ll see. A lot of times players tweet cryptic things and it end up it has nothing to do with football.
I was about to say, girl friend dumped him lol
Also: that is the single most annoying thing in all of social media, people throwing out cryptic half-thoughts fishing for people to ask them about it or shouted to the world intended for like the 2 people who actually know the context. Speak your mind or just send it to the people it’s intended for or shut up.
Don’t tell Jordsus to shut up!
Sorry . . . what tweet would that be?
that’s what he tweeted “it is what it is”
thx
We’re trading him for Boldyn!!
Based on his earlier tweets I’d assume it has something to do with a girl

look like the early leader to break the bank for him.
Sherman and Revis are gonna be using Maxwell as the new benchmark

i sort of hate reading that. man are we desperate. again w/ the taxes? and the gus bradley. i’m surprised he wouldn’t want to go to alt. he can party and stay with his dc.
philly is no fun during the season.
I Get it… But I’d rather go to a contender and pay income taxes than have a top 5 pick every year.
trips to miami, an extra 10-15% in salary, a scheme you know
Money-wise, the difference after taxes could be in the $10M neighborhood.
That’s an awful lot of money to give up.
If the money’s equal, and Max comes here, then he needs a new accountant. And a new brain.
Eagles may have to come in $2M above everyone else. It won’t make up for tax difference. But it’ll help.
McCourty’s in neutral territory tax wise, going from MA to PA.

No one will be surprised if it happens, but a source indicates the #Eagles are definitely out in front for CB Byron Maxwell.
I hate this shit!! People get giddy over this news, it petrifies me. We don’t leak Intel. I would so much rather not be hearing everyone say we are such a lock for all these hood players. I would feel so much more confident if things looked quiet
The Colts, Texans, Raiders, and Dolphins are among teams that have shown interest in free agent S Da’Norris Searcy.
Really like Searcy. But I’m sure agents are leaking it to drive price up. And they know our FO is silent right now, and won’t debunk anything. Could be true, could not. Just a few more days…
Good, happy that the Eagles weren’t mentioned. Gives me hope
GEagle . . .
Who’s Maxwell’s agent? He’d gotta be the guy behind this orchestration.
What’s his name, not Dogra, the other one he just changed
…
Past regimes used to make sure agents didn’t leak our true Intentions. No agent was using our offer as leverage for Nnamdi, we swooped in our of no where at the end… Of course there is an argument to be made for this being a new regime that may behave different, and its true, somehow I doubt chip would be less secretive, knowing him I assume he would be trying to even turn up the secrecy from the last regime… But the last regime was real secretive. Last year it was leaked we were going to make an offer of Mike Mitchell, he is in Pitt now and we took Jenkins. Chip cares about secret covert operation and he got to see how the last regime accomished it.
..
Hopefully this new era of awesome reporting and we get to find out who we will target two weeks ahead of time… But I probably wouldn’t bet on it
Ah . . . right. New guy.
It’s not Dogra. He’s co-represented by Alvin Keels and some other guy.
That’s what I said, not dogra
Can’t cut and paste it for some reason but Charles Robinson of Yahoo tweeted that Eagles have made S Devin McCourty a top priority.
Safety should be a priority over CB.. Plus I tgink McCourty is a better safety then Maxwell is a corner.. Both are high level, but McCourty is elite in our scheme
Bingo.
Looking like we are in on both. We will see what happens. But I will be VERY surprised if we make two large splashes and retain maclin.
think they figured they need to rebalance the payroll. pay for D and rely on offensive scheme.
I see what they’re doing. Honestly their main problem though is talent evaluation. Our offense was good but we crapped the bed when we played good defenses. SF knew our plays LOL. Our defense definitely needs a makeover, but our offense is nowhere near unstoppable.
we need better scheme fits all around. we lost sf in part b/c our line got straight dominated all game. and if the line isn’t good shady and the qb weren’t good either.
I hate when people point to the SF game as a team stopping our offense. That game was our worst OL situation all year. We had Peters, Kelly, Molk, Herremans, and Gardner starting that game I believe. Molk was starting his first ever NFL game. Shady was trying to do too much. We were doomed from the start.
Lol yeah pretty pathetic. So is every argument for giving up on Foles tho…
I understand, but there are going to be injuries and we lack OL starters and depth at the moment. Also, we don’t have that shady guy you speak of. Just Making the point that I don’t think our offense was elite before. And they’ve gotten worse so far this off-season (on paper). We will see how things shake out, but I’m just making the point that Kellys scheme will not do all the work without talent.
yup
I’d feel more confident if we weren’t hearing all this positive news right now
Commenter Nick C’s theory — and Anon’s — is rely on the O-scheme, buy talent for the defense.
Great theory.
Look at Kelly’s teams at Oregon.
How many great WRs did he have? Or great RBs?
He had great O-linemen, though. And left behind a great QB.
On defense? More NFL talent than his offense outside the tackle box.
Kelly’s offense depended on his scheme. Defense depended on talent.
I get the premise but here we go comparing college and NFL again. Nfl defenses are much faster, and quicker to process information. Huge difference between his scheme vs Arizona state and the Seattle seahawks. Think we need some talent in the NFL. Now where do we draw the line in how much we dedicate? I don’t know. That’s also not my job to figure out though. I don’t know his plan at QB, or rb or the other skill positions yet
Robinson says that McCourty/Maxwell is an either/or situation for Eagles as they probably couldn’t make best offer for both.
People will say go after McCourty first but I’d rather have a Maxwell/Rahim Moore combo than say a McCourty/Davon House combo. The other quality CBs on the market after Maxwell are older guys closer to 30.
Question . . . is safety a relatively more affordable position at the margins?
Depends on whether you’re working on letter or legal sized paper.
You’re a magnificent bastard!!!
I feel we should only give elite money to guys that are perfect fits for our scheme/team. I really like maxweel, but McCourty is a perfect fit.
McCourty’s a proven All Pro.
Maxwell? A proven very good CB on a great defense playing with 3 All Pros.
Agreed.
McCourty should be a priority. And is from what I hear.
Agree about the age of the alternate CB’s on the market but I think one could make the case for McCourty over Maxwell on two fronts:
1) Relative rarity of talent at that position (vs. CB).
2) Scheme-related exposure risk of Maxwell over McCourty. Meaning, I think there’s a stronger chance that Richard Sherman, Earl Thomas, the 12th man (etc.) have masked the relative talents of Maxwell more than say Revis, “genius” Belichick, etc. have covered those of McCourty.
yeah mccourty was good before those guys got there and he can play corner
I’d take McCourty and House
Me too, more value for the money.
House and Searcy is my guess
I hope your guess is WRONG! Lol you may be right but I hope not
Kareem Jackson getting 8 mil per.
Maxwell’s gonna break that bank.
yeah — hopefully howie talks some sense into chip, maxwell isn’t revis.
Hopefully, Howie isn’t locked out of Chip’s office.
Howie may be tied to his mattress under a woolen blanket held on both sides by several Marines . . .
While the rest of Kelly’s friends hit him was a towel wrapped around a bar of soap!
Kelly ordered the Code Red?
Yep
I don’t know about you, but I want Kelly on that wall. I NEED him on that wall.
Not sure he has enough ammo, but guns are ready.
Chip CAN handle the truth…
Of course, Chip can.
But YOU want the truth? YOU want the truth?
Can Baloophi handle the truth?
It’s always going to be house 😉
Eek. All aboard the McCourty train?

Kareem Jackson drew serious interest from #Eagles, #Jets; offers were comparable. Stayed with #Texans because of what O’Brien is building.
Interesting that we showed interest in Jackson considering he doesn’t fit the perceived parameters we’re looking for. With Undlin new DBs coach, maybe they’re open to smaller guys? Reported interest in CB Brice McCain would mesh with that. If so, could Buster Skrine be a target?
probably would prefer not to pay as much $$.
Or Flowers could be a sleeper…
Little older than I prefer, but more proven.
This.
Dude he is like 5’8… Kareem ain’t that small
Plus . . . NO state income taxes in Texas.
More than off-sets any lost money.
and ironically texas is a pretty cheap place to live.
“Stayed with Texans because of what O’Brien is building.”
– Rumor is O’Brien is building a lazy river with a miniature golf course in the center. I’d stick around for that, too.
Charles Robinson also says to keep an eye on Brian Orakpo as an OLB target.
An older guy like Orakpo might make sense if they still have high hopes for Smith and just want to give him another year to develop. His injury history is concerning though.
Keep the info coming. I’m starving in Oregon.
#starvedinoregon
Who is Charls Robinson? I have never even heard of him
Yahoo Sports. In the past, I think he’s been more of a college football reporter.
You know, Chucky R.?
i like it, hopefully he can stay healthy.
He also posted a general tweet that Eagles, Jaguars, Colts, Cowboys, and Redskins all looking to kick tires on pass-rushing OLBs.
It is interesting that Kelly castrates our most productive players: djax, mac, mccoy, cole, b.grizzle and boykin all gone (or don’t see the field)
Don’t want that scab
According to unnamed sources Howie has just called Chip and said that McCourty will be on the House.
Zing!
Greg Robinson just made it to roto so i can give credence to what they’re saying. I think Maxwell is too expensive, i think we’ll get mccourty and second tier guys.
Which is fine because 1. Almost any corners are better than what we had and 2. If we get McCourty we will have 2 good/ very good safties to help our cbs out.
Davon House…
Saying we were interested in kareem. Interesting considering the whole measurables thing
new db coach new measurables requirements? we probably just kicked tires there
Or instead of the Eagles actually showing interest that’s just what his agent told the Texans. These two CB needy teams that have tons of cap room are willing to pay him this amount, you better too if you want to keep him!
Desperate times, desperate measures?
Where’s Baloophi?
He’s the man to answer the first question.
The measurable a are guidelines. You make exceptions for everything. Sproles doesn’t fit the big people beat up little people mold, nor does Huff. They aren’t set in stone.

The #Chargers are making a hard push to keep CB Brandon Flowers, and indications are they’ll be able to. Deal isn’t done yet, though
Thank you Greg no one was speaking for hours and I was thirsty for news
GEagle shout out: “6 to 8 teams have serious interest in virgil green.”
Coming from Troy Renck, Denver Post Broncos’ beat writer. His agent says 13 teams have contacted him regarding Green and 6-8 are serious suitors. Is this like the how many girls have you had sex with rule? You overstate everything by a factor of 3?
Not too good with links, lemme know if it doesn’t work: http://www.denverpost.com/broncos/ci_27667290/virgil-green-tight-end-multi-year-offer-denver-broncos
Hopefully we steal him, haven’t heard Any Eagles rumors involving him. Because he isn’t famous enough for our media to make up that rumor, yet he is a perfect fit,,, hopefully we sigń him out of no where
And the girls have to understate it by 3 or you call them ugly names.
I just want one team to be interested in Kelly Green…
Too wishy-washy. Atrong colors are allegedly intimidating, aren’t they? ;~)
Damn it,,.. Thanks

Now that Kareem Jackson is off the market the Eagles have to their
attention to another CB. I BELIEVE Byron Maxwell is going to
Jacksonville
Had to always figure JAX was strong contender for him. Closer to where he grew up, former DC there, no state taxes. That said, Omar Kelly has an awful rep with Dolphins fans so who knows what will happen.
Davon House,,, you have all been warned with plenty of advanced notice for everyone to mentally prepare for a good, but not great addition 😉
I’ll be fine, but get McCourty too.
In optimistically expecting McCourty and House
Only the belle of the ball is left… Hopefully she doesn’t get back with her ex
The fact that other teams are able to re-sign some of their own free agents before they hit the open market shall keep us all worried about Maclin possibly not returning to the Eagles.
Apparently roughly 20% only of Free Agents hitting Free Agency re-sign with their ‘current’ team. Paired with the fact that Maclin will be the most sought after at his position makes me believe that the odds won’t be in the Eagles favor.
God forbid if McCourty also re-signs with the Pats before Tuesday…
this is the period where you field offers and home team matches, what’s why you saw jackson get signed today. if mac isn’t back before tuesday it’s over
This.
Only a handful have signed today.
‘Some’ equals ‘handful’. Pretty meaningful free agents though.
New thread…
