Cornering the Market

Bradley Fletcher and Cary Williams are gone. That may be good news, but the Eagles do need to replace them. That process will start next week when free agency begins.

My #1 target is Byron Maxwell from Seattle. And it sure sounds like he’s interested in the Eagles paying him.

Anchor Chris McKendry, who is an Eagles fan, asked Maxwell if he had any thoughts on potentially joining the Birds.

“Definitely,” he said. “They run the schemes that I’m talking about – Cover 3 and man press. And they’re committed to winning. Definitely, Philadelphia, if they were to come at me, I would have to consider them.”

Maxwell certainly won’t be cheap. A lot of teams are looking for CB help. Some other team could make an insane offer that the Eagles feel isn’t worth matching or beating. Just because you want a player and he makes a lot of sense doesn’t mean a deal will happen.

There are some other options.

Tramon Williams
Kareem Jackson
Davon House

It would really seem the Eagles need to come away with one of these guys. In a fantasy world, they would sign 2 of them.

Sheil Kapadia makes a good case for House as a target.

House has all the tools to be a quality starting cornerback in the Eagles’ scheme. He’s young, has good size, can play man coverage and has shown flashes of being a really good player.

In a perfect world, the Eagles would be able to sign Byron Maxwell and House. But if the bidding for Maxwell gets too rich for their liking, don’t be surprised if the Birds quickly shift their attention to bringing House in as a starter.

Sheil has plenty of good All-22 gifs that show you the good and the bad of House.

What about Antonio Cromartie? I don’t think of him as a Chip Kelly player, but I could be wrong on that. Cro, which is an excellent nickname, certainly has the size to play in this scheme.

There are some other guys I’m not sure about.

Perrish Cox
Chris Culliver
Jimmy Wilson
Walter Thurmond III
Patrick Robinson

Peanut Tillman is about to turn 34 and has dealt with injuries the last 2 years. You still wonder if he might have one more good year. He would be a good veteran mentor for any young CBs the Eagles had under him.

The Eagles must find one good CB in free agency. Beyond that they can be creative if needed. They do have Jaylen Watkins and Nolan Carroll already in place. Could one of those guys be an effective starter?

The Eagles need corner help in terms of starters and depth. They need to build a talented, deep secondary. One player isn’t going to solve this. Getting Maxwell would be a great start, but he’s not The Answer. He could be part of the answer so I will be nervous on signing day. I want him visiting Philly right away.

I’m sure Kelly and Ed Marynowitz have a plan. I just can’t wait to see what they do.

My prediction: The Eagles will have a deal worked out with Byron Maxwell by the end of the day Saturday.

  2. 2 ICDogg said at 12:49 AM on March 7th, 2015:

My suspicion is they already have something worked out. Just can’t talk about it yet.

  3. 3 Cafone said at 12:50 AM on March 7th, 2015:

They weren’t allowed to talk until midnight. They might be meeting at this moment. Or maybe they will meet tomorrow morning.

  4. 4 ICDogg said at 12:52 AM on March 7th, 2015:

Actually they’re not supposed to talk to agents until noon tomorrow.

But when has that ever stopped anyone

  5. 5 GEAGLE said at 1:15 AM on March 7th, 2015:

    Midnight

nope… they changed it last year

His agents are said to arrive late tonight to start chatting at midnight…allegedly

  9. 9 GEAGLE said at 8:08 AM on March 7th, 2015:

nothing is worked out yet,.,., how can there be a deal already? agent should be fired if thats true.. bunch of teams will bid on max, he will entertainm other offers to drive up the price… 2 days from now Max will be worth more than what the eagles would pay today… no deal is done, not even close… Negotiations 101…
    ..
how the hell does an agent know he wont get a better offer toiday? i know we think we are the only team that matters, but we aint the only ones bidding on Max, and the self proclaimed “prettiest girl at the dance” will want to hear all “her” optionions

people need to understand negotiation stances and leverage… Mac and Max would NEVER agree to a deal today, they would have to be morons

  10. 10 Media Mike said at 8:55 AM on March 7th, 2015:

His agent has a general idea what teams are willing to pay because they’ve all been tampering for a while. His agent also, I’d think, has a general idea about each coaching staff, organization, and city from having done business in multiple cities.

  11. 11 GEAGLE said at 9:39 AM on March 7th, 2015:

bidding intensifies, no one made their best offers two weeks ago…

  12. 12 Media Mike said at 9:49 AM on March 7th, 2015:

Well the Eagles get to make the first offer, so he might not get a chance to leave town.

  13. 13 GEAGLE said at 10:14 AM on March 7th, 2015:

thats the key… the key isnt getting him to agree on a contract today, because he is too sought after, two days from now someone will beat our offer..the KEY from now to monday, is staying at the top of all the offers in hopes that Philly is the first team he visits on tuesday… getting him to visit us first is half the battle… the other half is NOT letting him leave tuesday without a contract, thats going to take serious offers and it wont be easy,.,,hopefully we are fully committed to getting this done, and it doesnt hurt for Maragos to blow his phone up these next 5 days

  14. 14 Spaceman Spiff said at 10:46 AM on March 7th, 2015:

Dude, I have to give props when due. About a year ago, or so, we had a random convo about traveling in South America. You told me to check out Uruguay. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU. This is one of the most beautiful and chill places I have ever been. My Lady and I are having a blast – in Punta Del Este now and loving life. Seriously – some of the best advice ever given to me. Thanks again Homie!

“Sperlonga Mare” real small beach town about an hour drive from Rome..gorgeous…

If you like to Ski, “Cortina” or “Madonna di Campiglio” in the alpes, really small exclusive sky resorts… Madonna di Campiglion might be my favorite winter vacation town in the world”..its in the Italian Part of the alpes, Dolamite Montains..
    ..
There is also a fun Island, few hour boat ride from rome called “Ponza”..everyone Loves it, im not a big fan, then again I was there all by myself…

Last night, we were drinking a bottle of wine on the beach watching the sun dip into the ocean and I raise my glass and I said, “To, Geagle babe.” Lady looks at me and says, “WTF is a Geagle?” “It’s One of the reasons we are here right now.” Lady stands up and screams (at the top of her lungs). “F#ck yeah, Geagle.” I lost it. Thanks again bruds. Off to the ocean!

  20. 20 GEAGLE said at 12:50 AM on March 7th, 2015:

House will be signed… Praying for max tho
    ..
Not sure about the safety tho. Fingers crossed Searcy

  21. 21 ICDogg said at 12:55 AM on March 7th, 2015:

    McCourty

  22. 22 GEAGLE said at 1:17 AM on March 7th, 2015:

I liked house better before I knew our media was on to him. If Kapadia is jinxing him then maybe we have a shot at Max after all. Doubt we give McCourty 10mil….I’m not expecting the big crazy monster free agent haul most expect when they see 50nmil. Thinking fans are setting some big expectations that this franchise won’t meet

  23. 23 ICDogg said at 1:28 AM on March 7th, 2015:

Obviously they can’t sign everyone. But McCourty would be a game changer.

  24. 24 GEAGLE said at 7:57 AM on March 7th, 2015:

and a spit in the face to Jenkins… believe it or not, searcy is a pretty bad ass safety…

i just dont have as much confidence as everyone else seems to have in the eagles to start signing a bunch of the top players at their positions… sure as hell I wouldnt mind tho…. certainly rooting for McCourty, i just dont feel confident that the eagles feel the same
    ..
the #1 player at his position, isnt the only signing to be excited about….

  25. 25 Richaud Jeaffreson said at 1:33 AM on March 7th, 2015:

    Gilchrist

  26. 26 GEAGLE said at 9:41 AM on March 7th, 2015:

i wouldnt target him off the bat…. for me, he is the worst case scenario fallback option if you miss out on McCourty,Searcy and possibly Rahim…. ending up with Gilchrist isnt bad, but id be dissapointed if we target him without atleast truing to do better first

  27. 27 anon said at 1:55 AM on March 7th, 2015:

I think they’ll get Mccourty and settle on a CB.

  28. 28 GEAGLE said at 9:42 AM on March 7th, 2015:

CSN citing “sources LOL”… that eagles will go after Max n McCourty Hard… if the eagles signed them both I would cry tears of joy…. but the lifelong eagle fan in me doesnt believe it… fingers crossed im dead wrong!!!

  29. 29 Cafone said at 12:57 AM on March 7th, 2015:

So, the Eagles have 50 million to spend and they need four starters to have a very solid defense: safety, cornerback*2, OLB.

    seems doable.

  30. 30 ICDogg said at 1:08 AM on March 7th, 2015:

They also need at least one OL and a RB somewhere along the line. And they have to consider re-upping Cox and Kendricks, at least.

    It’s all doable though.

EDIT: not to mention a WR who may or may not be Maclin

  31. 31 Nick C said at 1:09 AM on March 7th, 2015:

And a wr1… Kinda missing one of those at the moment

  32. 32 ICDogg said at 1:10 AM on March 7th, 2015:

Yeah, I edited my post as you were typing that

It’s a lot to accomplish. Not all of it will happen in FA.

  33. 33 Nick C said at 1:26 AM on March 7th, 2015:

Yeah I’m thinking this may be a retooling offseason, unfortunately. We just have so many starting holes now with all the releases/free agents/ trade. Not to mention our depth if someone goes down. I’m hopeful for these reports about splashy FA to be correct, but it doesn’t seem like us to allow this many leaks and go after such high profile names. I know, I know… Chip is in charge now. So we shall see

  34. 34 ICDogg said at 1:28 AM on March 7th, 2015:

I don’t think it’s really leaks, it’s just speculation gone wild.

  35. 35 Nick C said at 1:32 AM on March 7th, 2015:

    I hope you’re right sir.

  36. 36 RC5000 said at 1:10 AM on March 7th, 2015:

    Wr is a big need

  37. 37 ICDogg said at 1:12 AM on March 7th, 2015:

I still think they’ll be able to sign Maclin but it’s certainly not a sure thing at this point. One guy I’m thinking of that might be a good WR for us is Torrey Smith, but I haven’t seen his name kicked around at all for the Eagles.

  38. 38 GEAGLE said at 1:19 AM on March 7th, 2015:

Mac stays,. But he won’t sign til day 2 or 3 of free agency. Nothing we can do will get him to sign before day 2 of FA at the earliest… It’s the smart play for the cards in his hand

  39. 39 KAJomo said at 9:38 AM on March 7th, 2015:

I know you are confident that Mac will be back, but I a not so sure. The moves Kelly has been making and many of us believe will make this offseason point towards Kelly looks at the trends of top teams the last couple of years.

Who were the top WRs in this year’s super bowl? Jordan Matthews might be bettervthan all of them already. I would love Mac back, but Kelly might prefer to go big in defense, draft MM, and get by with average WRs.

  40. 40 GEAGLE said at 9:44 AM on March 7th, 2015:

Mac is one of chips guys.. 4 days ago he told Mac, he wants him back,.,, Chip GETS WHAT HE WANTS these days…
    ..
Chip is very player specific… if he was willing to draft players 3 rounds early to make sure we get them, an extra Mil or two wont keep him from a player he wants,,
    ..
Mac staying is one of the things im most confident about… but what do i know?
    ..
if chip goes into next season with a young QB, Coop and two 2nd year WRs, he is certifiably insane!
you realize we lost our elite RB, and will play a young QB right? coop as the #1 option when chip probably cant wait to cut coop next year? i dont buy it

  41. 41 Media Mike said at 9:49 AM on March 7th, 2015:

Gronk isn’t exactly making street walker rates as a “receiver” if you’ll allow me to expand the definition.

  42. 42 MattE said at 6:23 AM on March 7th, 2015:

Fletcher Cox to me is priority #1, Maxwell/McCourty #2

  43. 43 oreofestar said at 7:55 AM on March 7th, 2015:

Cox won’t be a FA for 2 years we have some time

  44. 44 Greg Richards said at 7:56 AM on March 7th, 2015:

Cox is a priority but remember he’s not a FA after next season like Kendricks is. The Eagles have his 5th year option. Now that’s a pretty hefty one year salary and they’d probably like to lower that cap figure with an extension but to me, unless you’re planning on trading him, a Kendricks extension would be more pressing.

  45. 45 oreofestar said at 7:58 AM on March 7th, 2015:

5th year option is like 7 mil for Cox I don’t think it’s that big really

  46. 46 GEAGLE said at 8:04 AM on March 7th, 2015:

cox, kendricks money gets skimmed off the top and set aside,,,

  47. 47 KAJomo said at 9:34 AM on March 7th, 2015:

Exactly. I’m not extending Cox this year unless he is offering a good discount to do so. If I’m Cox’s agent I’m waiting ti see what M Wilkerson signs for and ask for that deal. Eagles have 2 more years to sign Cox plus the franchise tag the year after if they need to. No way Cox is going anywhere any time soon. Use that money to fix other areas.

I would extend Kendricks tomorrow. Keeping him around is a much bigger priority.

  48. 48 GEAGLE said at 11:06 AM on March 7th, 2015:

cox IMO is way more important then Mykal.. then again, i would go crazy if we lost either

  49. 49 KAJomo said at 1:39 PM on March 7th, 2015:

No doubt Cox is more important, but my point was we have jo reason to rush in extending him. He will be here 2-3 more years before we would NEED to give him a long term deal. Kendricks is a fre agent after next season. He needs to be locked up now

  50. 50 GEAGLE said at 1:23 AM on March 7th, 2015:

Think fans are setting expectations a tad bit too high. 50mil is not as much as it sounds when you have some nice young players… Not expecting the big splash most are. Sure as hell would love to be wrong

  51. 51 ICDogg said at 1:27 AM on March 7th, 2015:

If they’re seriously considering doing a big trade up for Mariota, and I am not saying they are or they aren’t, they really have to do something very big in FA to make it work, since they will be trading away so many draft picks.

  52. 52 GEAGLE said at 8:00 AM on March 7th, 2015:

no they dont… they really dont…
    ..
nothing says they have to sign the #1 guy at a position like Maxwell and McCourty, when there are quality #2 options like HOUse, Seasrcy/Rahim…top guys arent the only ways to improve…#2 or #3 guy at his position can be a great signing too… remember how signing Jenkins instead of Byrd paid off? fans werent too happy when Jenkins signings was announbced, but thats not the eagles problem
    .
nothing says they wont sign thy 6th most expensive OLB on the market

and even if im right about this, we are still getting good players, nothing to be upset about, but fans will be pissed due to false expectations that they have about that 50mil…

  53. 53 Media Mike said at 8:57 AM on March 7th, 2015:

The way you’re talking signing those #2 and #3 guys at multiple positions is also “big” in the grand scheme of things.

  54. 54 GEAGLE said at 9:47 AM on March 7th, 2015:

im talking about spending like 3mil less on each position… big difference!!! what was the difference between #1 option Byrds salary, and #3 safety Jenkins salary? difference was insane!!!!

  55. 55 Media Mike said at 9:48 AM on March 7th, 2015:

To a point, but you’re not trying to pass off Casey Matthews and Nate Allen as ok guys to fill spots with either.

  56. 56 GEAGLE said at 9:49 AM on March 7th, 2015:

what was the difference between #1 option Byrds salary, and #3 safety Jenkins salary? difference was insane!!!!

  57. 57 Media Mike said at 9:51 AM on March 7th, 2015:

  58. 58 GEAGLE said at 10:05 AM on March 7th, 2015:

    ,.,.
dude, you think i actually want to be right!! I pray that tuesday everyone is making fun of how wrong I am while rejoicing over the signing of the top players the market has to offer at 4-5 positions,.,., i wish i felt more confident, believe me i do,… Im rooting for you man, im rooting for me to be DEAD WRONG! i just warn not to get crazy with expectations because you risk being set up for failure..
    ..
if i take it to McCourty or Bust level right now, even tho the fan in me WISHES to see him in Eagle green, unmet expectations probably wont allow me to enjoy the signing of a quality #2 player at his position, which would be a HUge addition for us, even if it isnt the biggest addittion we can possibly make.
    ..
no point in arguing about it, because im on your side. we want the same exact things, you just seem more confident then I am that we will get our way…. lets just be honest that there isnt just 1 player available at each position that can provide a major upgrade for us… Hope for the #1 option, dont 100% expect it or you wont be able to appreciate us landing a secondary option which would still be huge for us is all im trying to say…

who I want the eagles to sign, looks alot like your list buddy,… i just wish my what i expect to happen list was as sexy as yours is… maybe its years of marinating in negadelphia… sure as hell hope im reading this all wrong

  59. 59 Media Mike said at 10:06 AM on March 7th, 2015:

In either way, if we sign House, Reed, Searcy, and Sheard – we did very well.

  60. 60 GEAGLE said at 10:11 AM on March 7th, 2015:

very true brother… but hopefully you are right and we do even better!!!!!!!

  61. 61 Media Mike said at 10:13 AM on March 7th, 2015:

How about Maxwell, House, Reed, Searcy, and Sheard?

But a signing of Reed and Sheard would precipitate both a cut of Meco (which I’m good with) and the possible trade of Kendricks as part of the Mariota Olympics (which would suck, but might be necessary).

  62. 62 GEAGLE said at 10:23 AM on March 7th, 2015:

lol you really have to ask me of all people about adding 5 quality defenders’? lol im like the only eagle fan that doesnt give a shit about chips offense. Im all defense, all the time…. YES PLEASE!!!

  63. 63 Dominik said at 9:01 AM on March 7th, 2015:

What bugs me about House is: Green Bays Defense isn’t good. And yes, they have Williams and Shields as CBs, but it’s not like those guys are Revis/Browner or Sherman/Maxwell.

Now, I read Sheils piece on him, you mentioned him very often. I never really watched him and when I watched the Packers, he didn’t stand out to me.

I’m not saying he isn’t a good player, but why did he never start? Especially if we’re talking about CB #1, I’d like to know if a guy who was never a real starter for the Packers would be good enough for us.

Now, if we’re talking CB #2, a 50 % snaps guy behind Williams and Shields could be a good option. Especially because he seems to fit what we’re looking for at corner. But, f.e., House/Carroll as starting CBs, I don’t know if I would really like that scenario.

  64. 64 Media Mike said at 9:09 AM on March 7th, 2015:

    Good questions on House.

  65. 65 GEAGLE said at 10:09 AM on March 7th, 2015:

House sat between two quality starting veterans…at a position you dont rotate… BG sat the bench behind two veterans, barely playing…. does that mean some team shouldnt pay BG well?

BG and HOUSE are the same type of signing, two talented guys, blocked by better veterans on their roster, who GMs will sign betting that they explode during this next contract when they finally get a starting opportunity…. if you wouldnt sign house, then Teams shouldnt pay BG… same exact type of prospect.
    ..
you saw BG play in limited snaps, i saw house play in subpackages and fill in during injuries… same type of prospect.
    ..
stay away from paying older veterans for pass performance and their name brand… better to pay a kid whos best ball is still ahead of him, not halfway behind him.. to pull that off, a certain amount of “projecting” is involved

  66. 66 GEAGLE said at 9:56 AM on March 7th, 2015:

he is a signing you make because you like the way he has steadily progressed his first 4 years in the league, and there are alot of teams that will view him as one of those uys whos best ball will come during th next contract he signs… its not like the has been sitting on the bench behind a bum like Bradley Fletcher… quality young player hasnt played a major role only because he has two quality veteran corners ahead of him on a superbowl contender..kind of understandable no? we didnt play BG much, but he wasnt on our bench because he sucked… obviously i wouldnt be talking about signing a kid who was stuck on the bench behind two bums…

Tramon williams, Peanut Tillman, Cromarties..doubt we have any interest due to age..
    ..
Flowers, Buster skrine we wont have interest do to size,,
    ..
House is the next most realistic option on the eagles wish list is my guess….. House/Nolan certainly isnt the dream team… but if you stick two quality Safeties behind them they will be much better… Keep in mind that no matter how much they spend in free agency on a CB, they are forced to prioritize drafting one because they have no young outside CBs on the bench..if we have to draft a CB in the top 100, god chance we will hope that he can start a year from now,,,, so since NO matter what, they have to spend a pick on a CB, i wouldnt be surprised if they go with 2 CB names this city wont celebrate, figuring that the much improved safety and our pass rush will help mask them for a year against the kid is ready to take over.
    ..
im convinced Nolan starts next year, but i doubt he starts more then 1 year… house what he lacks in years of outside experiwence he makes up for in versatililty with all the subpackage roles he has played
    ..

I wouldn’t mind House, and Flowers. They could sign Flowers to a short term deal, and see how Watkins, and any draft picks develop by the end of his contract. I could also see them signing some mid level guys like Gilchrist, and Brooks Reed. With having to re-sign guys like Cox, Kendricks, and Foles I don’t think they can go nuts in FA. I think Chip will play it smart.

  84. 84 KAJomo said at 9:29 AM on March 7th, 2015:

I think AP stays in Minni. Cowboys only have 7mil in space. They are lacking depth everywhere and have FAs of their own they may want to keep around. How are the going the fit AP’s 12 mil in there.

I atually hope the do. They will have to give up picks and money. That will deplete their depth even more.

  95. 95 Greg Richards said at 8:59 AM on March 7th, 2015:

The last couple of years you haven’t heard much during the legal tampering period. The first time they had one, rumors of players agreeing to terms leaked but the league sent out a memo warning of fines happened. It’s stupid. League is basically saying tamper all you want in the illegal tampering period before the legal tampering period, and we’ll turn a blind eye but unless you tell the agents “Wink! Wink! This isn’t a “formal offer”, it’s only our “negotiating position”!” we’re coming down on you.

  96. 96 Philip Soloninka said at 9:16 AM on March 7th, 2015:

  97. 97 GEAGLE said at 8:12 AM on March 7th, 2015:

who cares if teams tampered before? it doesnt even matter because nbew bids will come in the next few days and drive up whatever price they would have agreed to already.. markety is still growing, past negotiations will be worthless in two days
    ..
negotiations 101, negotiation stances, leverage,… until these things are factored into the equation, we have no shot figuring out what the eagles will do if we refuse to factor contractual negotiation technques in the predictions and expectations of this free agent process.
    ..
Max and Mac have too much leverage to agree to anything today, they would have to be morons… if they like the eagles as their top choice, they will spend the next few days entertaining the top offers, some crappy franchise will offer the most because they have no choice, the agents will come back to us with that top figure, and give us a chance to get in the ballpark of those figures/…we wont have to match the top offer of a bad team, but we have to get in that price range

  107. 107 GEAGLE said at 8:28 AM on March 7th, 2015:

feel like people have a wrong idea of how these free agent processes and negotiations will go… no #1 player at his position will agree to any deal and time before Tues at the earliest… the tampering period isnt even about that.
    ..
we arent playing to reach a deal today or tomorrow; thats unrealistic if you understand the top players we are talking abouts negotiation power, and how an agent will approach getting a player a deal..
    ….
Basically from now til tuesday, no offer will be agreed on, especially if we look at some of the top options…what we are “playing for” the next few days is that by the end of monday we need to have made one of the best current offers and what yuo strive for these next few days is to get the player you covet to choose to visit YOUR TEAM the day the market opens… its all about getting the guiy to choose you as your first visit. when that happens, then it becomes important that you make him a deal that will keep him from going to visit the next team… basically if we really want a guy like Maxwell, from now til tuesday we have to make our selves the most attractive option with the #s we are throwing around… If Maxwells first visit is the eagles… gotta do what it takes to not let him leave in a deal..

but guys like Max and Mac… if we dont hear good news about them agreeing to a new deal with us the next few days, nothing to get worried about… Maclin and his agent wont sign with the eagles until they find out what the best offer is from another team, then bring that figure to the eagles a few days into free agency and give them a chance to get in the price range of that deal… if we are the top options we wont have to match a terrible franchise bidding the most, but we need to get our offer close to theirs to make them choose a sexier destination and the 3rd best deal, instead of going to a horrible franchise for an extra mil or two
    ..
there is nothing the eagles can do to sign Mac before wednesday, so dont let the media twist you in a ball of nerves about it the next few days… read a basic negotiation book and a man in Maclins shoes would have to be financially retarded to sign before wednesday.. Max is in no rush to reach an agreememnt either… he will gladly wait to see what the best options are financially, and if he likes us more than the teams making the best offer the agent will bring that offer to us and give us a chance to get in the price range..
    ,..
the Mac and Max deal have no chance of getting done quickily… they hold all the negotiating power.. we dont have a play that can force their hand and the agents know it… gotta be patient to find out about Mac and Max…. but in the end, Max, Meco and Celek will all be back next year.. bet that

House is my more affordable fall back option… but Sheil probably Jinxed it… i feel confident about us signing guys like Brooks reed, House, Searcy back when no one in the media were connecting them to us… as soon as i see our media start talking about them, i get less confident that we will sign them… sheil talking about Davon House makes me less confident then when I was talking about him… lol thats how little i think of our media lol if they agree with my opinion, they suck so bad that I no longer trust my opinion LOL

  110. 110 GEAGLE said at 8:31 AM on March 7th, 2015:

if Polk and Sproles are both back next year, no chance we sign a free agent RB…. only way the eagles sign a RB is if someone poaches polk…
    ..
sproles is our 3rd down back, chip wont pay for at best a 2 down player, when he can draft one and pay him 500k the next 4 years..
    ..
Leading rusher in the NFL last year Murray made 1.7 mil…
    ..
roto passed along recent CJ spiller reporty, named a bunch of interested teams and pointed out that they are surprised to not see the eagles name on the spiller suitor list… makes sense, we arent paying a free agent RB

  111. 111 Greg Richards said at 8:56 AM on March 7th, 2015:

I see them waiting until late in FA and then signing a guy that hasn’t gotten the offers he likes up to that point to an incentive-laden, short-term deal with not a lot guaranteed. Stevan Ridley, coming off injury, would be a good fit. Then, regardless of who they sign, still target the position in the draft.

  129. 129 Media Mike said at 9:53 AM on March 7th, 2015:

He’s very very very very very slow. And limited in the pass game. If you put him in, the other team can key on too few possible plays.

  130. 130 James said at 9:56 AM on March 7th, 2015:

Ahh, I knew he was a disappointment because of where he was drafted, but I thought the light turned on for him this last year. Haven’t seen much of him TBH. That slow eh?

  131. 131 Media Mike said at 10:00 AM on March 7th, 2015:

Yeah, he’s very pokey. He was very effective when getting a steady diet of carries (which seems to not be what we’re trying to do right now) as evidenced by his production on one of my fantasy teams this year, but very limited as a player.

  132. 132 BlindChow said at 1:45 PM on March 7th, 2015:

You were saying above to sign Gore, but you wouldn’t take Ingram?

    Mark Ingram 4.53
    Frank Gore 4.58

And that was Gore in his prime. He’s probably even slower now.

  133. 133 GEAGLE said at 8:35 AM on March 7th, 2015:

no idea if we have any plans on signing a Guard. dont love any of these options for us as a perfect fit, and Guard is one of the few positions you can expect to start as a rookie…..
    ..
on the other hand Herremans told us what chip values, OL and the QB which are the right priorities. RB and WR is irrelevant without an OL..so we are talking about a starting guard position on the OL, and OL is crucial to chip and most coaches… im not sure how much they love tobin and Barbre at RG. That Tobin was much better at LG… feel more comfortable about signing a quality OL starter to solidify our line, but if i had to bet, id say the starting Guard is drafted

  134. 134 oreofestar said at 8:37 AM on March 7th, 2015:

  135. 135 Media Mike said at 9:00 AM on March 7th, 2015:

  136. 136 Greg Richards said at 9:03 AM on March 7th, 2015:

I don’t think Andrew Gardner sucked, at guard at least. To me, Molk was the biggest liability. Pocket collapsed straight back into Foles every time he was in there. If the pressure is coming from the outside, Foles is adept at stepping up in the pocket, or at least he was the year before. When the pressure is straight up the middle, Foles would just continue to retreat in the pocket.

  137. 137 Media Mike said at 9:07 AM on March 7th, 2015:

When asked to do so in the regular season, none of those backup O-linemen performed at the level they were said to be playing at all pre-season.

  138. 138 GEAGLE said at 10:42 AM on March 7th, 2015:

preseason they were playing with chemistry and cohesion with the OL lined up next to them… you ask them to jump up and face starting caliber competition lined up next to a new OL every game, you probably wont get an accurate picture of their true ability

  139. 139 Media Mike said at 11:22 AM on March 7th, 2015:

You’re not wrong, but I’m not the guy on the team or reporting on what the team was saying that was fluffing these dudes all pre-season.

  140. 140 GEAGLE said at 12:18 PM on March 7th, 2015:

it wasnt exactly fluff… you saw them play extensively against other 2nd string players fighting for jobs and they were pretty dominant… we can not pay attention to the starters in preseason, but them backups are playing their asses off fighting for jobs..

i rip reporters as much as anyone, but if the only thing you get to see of our backups is them dominating opposing second string players during every preseason game, what can you really expect them to write? the one time the moron media got to see them, they looked great… how can you expect anything less then a positive report? id rip them more if they watched them play well and bashed them just because they arent name brand players

  141. 141 BreakinAnklez said at 9:44 AM on March 7th, 2015:

That’s the case with a lot of QBs, Brady becomes a completely different QB when you can disrupt his pocket up the middle.

  142. 142 GEAGLE said at 10:43 AM on March 7th, 2015:

he looks like Geno smith when the center is in bradys lap…and people want to lose Foles when NO QB would have done much better behind our OL mess

  143. 143 bill said at 10:20 AM on March 7th, 2015:

They all suffered a lot in pass pro, but had their good moments in run blocking. Molk was overmatched physically; Kelce gets overmatched, and he’s much better in pretty much every aspect, so I don’t think that’s likely to change too much. But he was very good at moving, just not good enough when he got there to finish the block. He did enough to open creases, but not to open the superhighways Shady seemed to need at times last year. Gardner was flat out awful at T, and didn’t improve much at G, IMO. At least at G he wasn’t playing matador every other down, but that’s pretty faint praise. I thought Tobin was the one guy that really showed that he deserved to be counted on for more than spot duty.

  144. 144 Media Mike said at 10:22 AM on March 7th, 2015:

  146. 146 GEAGLE said at 10:39 AM on March 7th, 2015:

so hard to know… they were all placed in an impossible situation for young players. they were either being moved to a different spot every other week, or they found a different guy lining up next to them… i dont even know how to try and evaluate the young OL, Knowing how crucial continuity is at that position and how much chemistry is required with the man next to you…. last year was my personal disaster, not being able to enjoy atleast getting to evaluate your young depth because they were placed in such an impossible situation that you cant rationally expect to succeed.. as a former Tackle, I have an idea how Peters and Lane looked, but all our young players were playing musical chairs in the interior of our OL, i really am baffled as to how and try to evaluate our young OL because of what an extreme mess it was…. which is why i think people who want to quit on Nick after what they saw last year are flat out imbeciles.. sorry

    http://walterfootball.com/freeagents2015CB.php

  151. 151 Media Mike said at 9:27 AM on March 7th, 2015:

I still see hitting on a top safety as vitally more important than hitting on a top CB. There are upgrades over Fletcher and Williams down the line from Maxwell (although clearly not as good) and possibly on the roster already; where we’re bereft of any hope at upgrading safety and the talent falls off in a hurry on the free agent market. That isn’t to say that McCourty is a “must”, but there are less names at safety that’ll really help as opposed to more at CB that can.

But Maxwell, House, and McCourty is still fine!

  156. 156 GEAGLE said at 10:45 AM on March 7th, 2015:

It is weird that in years past we(I’m guilty) of clammering for that big WR at this time of the year. It became almost a ritual. Now we have JM and Huff and we’re basically quiet. I can’t wait to see JM progress. I certainly hope Mac is signed. But, if we’re all saying — a top safety and top CB (or 2) are signed, how do we sign Mac too? We still have to pay all those draft pics too. I’m not sure Mac will be possible.

Even if Chip does things that wind up being the worst moves every, it’ll take several more seasons to get him out of town. Any of the “mistakes” he makes with the current roster will be long gone from their prime once we had a new guy running things again.

Feel free to judge any and all of Chip’s moves, I know I do, but to ask the owner to limit Chip’s latitude is dumb.

In my world, you sign maxwell and mccourty and draft a OL in the first round and a prospect QB in later rounds. Mariota tape appears he as a subpar arm. Best arm i saw imo was grayson and of course theres no talk of the Eagles targeting him at all. That man has a great throw. Of course i think they draft a rookie RB

  176. 176 Media Mike said at 10:03 AM on March 7th, 2015:

Petty and Hundley have better arms than Grayson from what I’ve seen.

I’m not at all convinced that trading up that far is a good move (as a rule), but I think Mariota’s arm is fine for the NFL.

  177. 177 lewis don said at 10:14 AM on March 7th, 2015:

    I respect that.

Im referring to draft breakdown tape. Watched all the top prospects three games a piece, if they had them available. Mariotas deep ball was like a line drive type of throw and i believe in two of the three i watched he only connected on 2/15 deep throws between the games, dont qoute me. His best route was the flat and short slant out. Grayson had touch and timing on his throws. Mariota had great footwork and blazing speed.

Of course im no expert but somone show me a great timing throw from mariota.

Petty i think i felt like his throwing motion was flawed. And hundley i dont remember.

Again im no expert but i think Mariotas accuracy numbers are inflated.

  178. 178 Media Mike said at 10:19 AM on March 7th, 2015:

  180. 180 lewis don said at 5:47 PM on March 7th, 2015:

While true, wouldn’t you say there would be a greater disparity between mariota who went entire games throwing like 5 passes greater than 20 yards, all of which looked like beams (Bullet passes, low arching bullet passes) and none that I have seen, yet, are timing throws, than say other Qbs in college who throw a more variety of passes?
And that’s disrespectful to Colt, Like of course all college QBs numbers are inflated in general, but he is a pretty accurate QB.
He threw for 71% cmp percentage with the redskins last year and has more TDs than interceptions in his career. He threw 60% with the browns. My eye test informed me that he has a decent NFL arm. His vision I thought was his issue.

  183. 183 GEAGLE said at 10:19 AM on March 7th, 2015:

interesting… eliminates all free agent DL’s… what we plan on doing about vinny Curry is the other part of how this all plays out… keeping Thornton means you need an interior pass rusher behind him… if we know we are trading Curry or losing him after the year, maybe we put less value on a OLB who can drp back like Brooks reed since we will have a plethora of LBs that can drop into coverage anyway next year, and maybe we switch and priorize an OLB like McPhee, who can line up and pass rush from every spot, no matter how we line up on 3rd down… if we plan on losing Currys pass rush that compensates for thorntons lack there of, maybe we go with an OLB who can also line up as a 4-3 DT next to Cox on 3rd down and pass rush from the interior, like a pernell McPhee…

wish we knew what this franchise has planned for Vinny, it would make the picture much clearer

  184. 184 Media Mike said at 10:21 AM on March 7th, 2015:

Let Ced sign with another team and get a 2nd. Trade Curry for a pick as well. Assume Hart gets in the rotation this year. Sign McPhee.

Could work……….especially if the possible trade up for Mariota eats up too many picks.

  185. 185 Greg Richards said at 10:30 AM on March 7th, 2015:

This year’s draft is pretty strong in 3-4 defensive linemen. There are also a lot of FA options. I doubt any team would be willing to give up a 2nd for him. Very good run defender, but almost no pass rush. Not out of the realm of possibility that Eagles could work out a trade with another team for less compensation.

  186. 186 Media Mike said at 10:32 AM on March 7th, 2015:

In that case, easy to keep him here for the 2nd round tender. I was just pointing out that I’d take the 2nd rounder for him if a team (like Indy!) really needed to get more stout vs. the run and signed him.

  187. 187 Greg Richards said at 10:33 AM on March 7th, 2015:

I don’t think McPhee is a fit. Other than being a strong pass rusher that the QB is always accounting for, he isn’t suitable as a decoy rusher, and he wouldn’t create that half-second of doubt that Kelly and Davis value. At least Curry can 2-gap when situation calls for it, but McPhee would be a potted plant at OLB – if not rushing QB or plugging a lane.

I expect a strong showing from the Eagles in FA, but a thing to remember is we need an even stronger showing towards our own FAs. Its soon gonna be that time where we have to lock up Cox and Kendricks and depending on some different circumstances, Boykin and Foles. Dont let talent escape, like we might do with Maclin because we didn’t lock him up earlier. Dont let talent get to FA, where their bargaining position is strong.

He then took his sparingly small sense of intelligence and punished it by getting hammered for 10 years by real football players.

Did you honestly expect him to say anything valuable? The fact that he is coherent(which is a stretch) is impressive. I’d hire a gorilla or a orangutang before Heath Evans.

The National guys just can’t keep up with every bit of news on every team, so every time they analyze things, they fuck up. It annoys me too that they get local attention. If you want to be national, do what Schefter and Glazer does, report news and what your sources tell you, never put in your opinion. He brings nothing to anything, and is the perfect example of why just because you played in the NFL, it doesn’t mean you understand the game or have the abilities to explain, analyze or critique current situations in the league.

The fact that he is a smart-ass doesn’t help. I can forgive a commentator calling our play a read option, when in fact it was just a handoff from the shotgun. It goes quick, he doesn’t follow the Eagles and it doesn’t really matter. Except when you try to explain the play and tell me why it was wrong to do, and still fuck it up, to tell Chip: hey college, welcome to the big league. Motherf***** shut your mouth, before Chippah pimpslaps the living shit out of you.

Jeremy Maclin is good. Is he THAT good? If that’s the price tag, the Eagles might be better served to let Maclin go play elsewhere.

There is some serious talent in this draft – especially at pick 20 where someone like Devante Parker could fall to 20, and DGB has wow potential (if he is on their draft board at all). Justin Houston.

It looks like there is very limited interest in him staying long term with the Chiefs and they are not in a position to realistically contend this year. Cap situation is not great for them, and while they obviously couldn’t let him leave for free if they dont think they could lock him up it makes a degree of sense.

    Barwin – Kiko – Kendricks – Houston

If KC wants even 1st you walk on by. That is too much to pay for a 1 year rental who is getting $13mil, possibly.

All depends on if KC thinks they can get a long term deal. Everything i have read or seen looks like he wants out, and once Suh’s monster contract goes down they may sit there and think its time to cash in rather than letting him walk next year.

  281. 281 GEAGLE said at 5:58 PM on March 7th, 2015:

dont push it, doubt chip will
    ..
when you guys talk about this trade value, just like in the shady trade, need to factor into the equation their contracts have on their value of the trade..
    ..
for example shady cost 11mil, kiko cost under a mil… shady is a million times better then Kiko in terms of on the field value for next year, but the prices of those two, opposite extremes are what balances out the value and makes it a fair trade..
    ..
Sure Curry is more valuable then Dion on the field today, but we have to ask the Dolphins to eat dead money to trade us the player we want, so THAT gets factored into the value..Basically its not Curry for Dion, Its we will trade them Curry, for Dion and them eating X amount of dead money…and considering we dont have to eat half the dead money they do trading Vinny.. there values even out
    ..
btw, maybe your point warrents a discussion normally, but not when it comes to Chip and Dion..he been trying to get this kid for YEARS. we have seen him willing to draft ducks 3 rounds earl;y to make sure he gets them… you can bet your ass he wont dick around playing hardball with the Dolphins over a dion trade. Chip will look at it like, I get the Kid i adore at a crucial position, who fits our scheme so we can justify paying him enough to extend him long term, for Curry who is my favorite player but cant be in philly past this year because we cant pay him half of what 4-3 teams will offer him to be a 3 down DE..
    ..
Chip gets Dion friggin Jordan, for a Kid Curry, who we all know we will lose next year due to his contract and our scheme.. chip wont push his luck crying over an extra 5th round pick…
    ..
Dion has a 5th year option since he was drafted in round 1, we would have him under contract for 3 years while dolphins have to pay curry big money next year to keep him,. that also evens out there values.
    ..
For GMs its not as simple as Curry is better tooday, so we should get more then Dion…alot of other things effect the values of these trades,… BTW, we know Chip is going to do things HIS WAY, they wont always be the way we are used to everyone doing them,..
    ..
3 years of Dion or 1 year of Curry? no brainer for chip unless he plans on switching to a 4-3 next week

Big numbers for #Texans OT Derek Newton: 5 years at $26.5M with $10M guaranteed. $13.75M in first 2 years and $17M in first 3 years

Keep in mind when you see “guaranteed” amounts is that sometimes that guarantee is only for injury and not for skill and injury. If it’s guaranteed for skill and injury, then the player gets the money irregardless. If it’s only for money, then the player only gets the money if he gets hurt.

    ..
i have no idea why people are worried baout losing MACLIN.. he is literally doing exactly what him and his agent should be doing…nothing has happened that should make philly start to worry about losing him,.,. Maclin and his agent are doing exactly what they should be doing considering the cards they have in their hand and the crap hand the eagles have…. nothing bad or discouraging has happened yet…there should be no eagle fan who feels any less confident that we can sign him then we were 3 weeks ago… as soon as we decided not to tag him, this was the course his agent had to take..btw, not tagging him is probably good faith gesture for two sides that both expect this to get it done(this isnt a guarantee, but i wouldnt rule it out, both sides sound amicable still)
    ..
nothing wrong with Maclin taking his time, to play his hand correctly giving him the best chance to get the best deal from the Eagles… if his agent would have accepted ANY offer for us, considering the great cards he has in his hand, he should be fired on the spot
    ..
there is no reason for anyone to be negative about the Maclin negotiations yet… if the Texans offer 15-16mil a year, thats when we worry… right now, we are still on course to get this done.

This off season will be interesting. Byron Maxwell is a guy we will probably have to horrifically over-pay to play good football and would be a contract we look at every year after and wonder if the Eagles are going to pay it, and it will be a surprise if we get a player across from him to play for more than a stop-gap solution. I don’t think we have a long-term solution in the works for CB any time soon (particularly if we do get MM, we won’t have have the draft capital to address it with any degree of certainty for the longer term without having some serious luck and develop a mid or later round guy).

Amazingly though, we have a real chance of finally having a real fix at the safety tandem (worth their money and for 2 or 3 years) for the first time since Dawk left. And maybe that is what can carry the secondary.

    ..
the only down side about putting a bid on an RFA is his team will take the full week to decide to match or not..so they usually end up matching in the end and making you tie up your money for a week waiting for the answer while other free agents get signed and we get stuck missing out on them
    ..
but we all know the eagles arent spending more then 30mil, they will still have an extra 20mil left over after free agency, so who cares if the Browns tie our money up for a week? its not like we will spend it all..

Edge rushers are like GOLD in the NFL. I just think this is a unique opportunity for an afc and Nfc team to help each other tremendously. Not only fixing draft mistakes that can’t be corrected due to scheme, but it leaves each team with an extremely talented young edge rusher that fits each team like a glove.. Edge rusher is so Damn expensive, if a team will eat a cap hit to grab a player it would make sense to do it for an Edge rusher who is still on his rookie deal… If you want an elite edge rusher like Justin Houston, bidding starts at 50mil.. 5mil cap hit to get a year of super cheap talented edge rusher curry who is ready to explode when you put him in a 4-3 is a very smart investment when we talking about how you have to overdraft to get edge rushers or get stuck paying a ton in free agency. What’s 5mil to go from bad fit to elite fit with a young player at one of the 3 most expensive positions? Sunday like a great investment to me. Vinny isn’t in the drug program like Dion… Vinny even has the sack numbers without barely playing. I wish we could get an OLB version of curry

Commenter Nick C’s theory — and Anon’s — is rely on the O-scheme, buy talent for the defense.

    Great theory.

Look at Kelly’s teams at Oregon.

How many great WRs did he have? Or great RBs?

He had great O-linemen, though. And left behind a great QB.

On defense? More NFL talent than his offense outside the tackle box.

Kelly’s offense depended on his scheme. Defense depended on talent.

  426. 426 Nick C said at 6:51 PM on March 7th, 2015:

I get the premise but here we go comparing college and NFL again. Nfl defenses are much faster, and quicker to process information. Huge difference between his scheme vs Arizona state and the Seattle seahawks. Think we need some talent in the NFL. Now where do we draw the line in how much we dedicate? I don’t know. That’s also not my job to figure out though. I don’t know his plan at QB, or rb or the other skill positions yet

  427. 427 Greg Richards said at 6:44 PM on March 7th, 2015:

Robinson says that McCourty/Maxwell is an either/or situation for Eagles as they probably couldn’t make best offer for both.

People will say go after McCourty first but I’d rather have a Maxwell/Rahim Moore combo than say a McCourty/Davon House combo. The other quality CBs on the market after Maxwell are older guys closer to 30.

  428. 428 ACViking said at 6:45 PM on March 7th, 2015:

Question . . . is safety a relatively more affordable position at the margins?

  432. 432 ACViking said at 6:51 PM on March 7th, 2015:

    McCourty’s a proven All Pro.

Maxwell? A proven very good CB on a great defense playing with 3 All Pros.

    Agreed.

  434. 434 OregonDucker said at 6:55 PM on March 7th, 2015:

McCourty should be a priority. And is from what I hear.

  435. 435 Baloophi said at 6:51 PM on March 7th, 2015:

Agree about the age of the alternate CB’s on the market but I think one could make the case for McCourty over Maxwell on two fronts:

    1) Relative rarity of talent at that position (vs. CB).

    2) Scheme-related exposure risk of Maxwell over McCourty. Meaning, I think there’s a stronger chance that Richard Sherman, Earl Thomas, the 12th man (etc.) have masked the relative talents of Maxwell more than say Revis, “genius” Belichick, etc. have covered those of McCourty.

  436. 436 anon said at 6:52 PM on March 7th, 2015:

Kareem Jackson drew serious interest from #Eagles, #Jets; offers were comparable. Stayed with #Texans because of what O’Brien is building.

Interesting that we showed interest in Jackson considering he doesn’t fit the perceived parameters we’re looking for. With Undlin new DBs coach, maybe they’re open to smaller guys? Reported interest in CB Brice McCain would mesh with that. If so, could Buster Skrine be a target?
