6th Round Preview
Posted: May 2nd, 2015 | Author: Tommy Lawlor | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 300 Comments »The Eagles traded their 4th round pick on Saturday, after having dealt both 5th round picks on Friday. That made the early part of today awfully boring.
The talk now is that the Eagles made a huge mistake by not drafting an OL in the 4th. They didn’t add any last year and this is now bordering on them being irresponsible.
That is stretching things just a bit.
The Eagles didn’t pass on anyone in the 4th that seemed like a great fit. My favorite OG prospect, Mark Glowinski, went in the late 4th. The Eagles may have had some interest, but taking him at 113 must have felt too early. It is possible they didn’t have him on their draft board.
In return for sending the 4th round pick to the Lions, the Eagles got back Detroit’s 3rd round pick next year. That is especially important since the Eagles don’t have a 2nd rounder (traded for Sam Bradford). The Eagles will now have a pair of 3rd round picks.
There should still be some interesting OL prospects still on the board when the Eagles do pick at 191. As of now:
Big school, but not ideal fits
OL Tyrus Thompson
OL Austin Shepherd
OL Josue Matias
Guys from big schools who have the right measurables
OL Laurence Gibson
OL Takoby Cofield
OL Sean Hickey
OL Darryl Baldwin
OL Cody Wichmann
Small School guys
OL Cole Manhart – 6-4, 298
OL Jake Rodgers – 6-6, 315
OG Chad Hamilton – 6-2, 292
OL Mike Coccia – 6-3, 301
* * * * *
What about Safety prospects?
Kurtis Drummond
Cody Prewitt
Ryan Murphy
Anthony Jefferson
Dean Marlowe
None of those guys is compelling. Drummond is the best FS of the group. Murphy might be the best scheme fit. Oregon State had him drop down and cover the slot on a regular basis. Jefferson originally committed to play for Kelly at Oregon, but went to UCLA to be closer to a sick relative.

No O line, no sex so far. #BadDraft
Tommy Derron Smith has to be worth a pick at some point.
Also think you have to take a WR at this point – have to be best value on the board.
What happened to all the Tre McBride hype?
People are down on small school guys – would be amazing value at this point.
He’d be my target, but there must be medical or character concerns. May not be on chip’s board
I’d take D***on Smith in a heartbeat. Hold on wait…
Off-season: upgraded RB a lot, upgraded QB a lot (at least coaches think so), upgraded LB a lot, upgraded secondary a lot, about same or a bit worse in WR, OL a bit worse, DL same. Not bad all in all.
LAEL COLLINS TIME?
Ifo still falling, too…
Feel bad for this kid n
Actually I don’t feel that bad. $3m is good money for not going to work.
His knee is reportedly in bad shape. Likely IR for this year.
And if Chip takes him you know what everyone will say…
planning for the future?
If only that’s what they would say
IFO OLOMU got paid 3mil in insurance money for not getting drafted in the first 3 rounds,,, not a bad days work…
what insurance company do you that will hand over $3 million without a proctological exam?
Must be a German company!
names, please?
Cannot name them. According to unnamed sources.
sure, you toss out names of beers . . .
but you won’t share the big-money info!
for 3 million i’d do that in public
i’m thinking the insurance company has to be satisfied with Ifo’s rehab and that no other issues exist that may explain why he went undrafted in Rds 1-3.
id live stream it on Eagles Draft Central
International Specialty Insurance.
http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000490400/article/ifo-ekpreolomu-set-to-collect-on-3-million-insurance-policy
And Oregon U. apparently paid the $40K premium. One of the things the NCAA allows.
sounds like a fly-by-night
i kid
thx.
bad story all the way around
this draft has more than its share
Funny that media thinks they care more about the OL then Chip does…
If we had done things their way we wouldn’t have half a team or a draft for the next 3 years anyway.
Lol right….we wouldn’t even have half our front 7 If they had their way lol
..
These are the same idiots that once a year for 4 years now have been saying Demeco is done in philly lol.. My favorite was their moronic ignorant stupidity because the veteran took it easy in the preseason. Meco must have thought we were insane when he first got here
I’m thinking we have no earthly idea what Kelly really thinks.
Skins make another decent pick

#Eagles asked by sports agent not to draft OT La’El Collins. Collins not a suspect but will be questioned in death of estranged girlfriend.
Response should be fine, as long as you promise to sign with us as UDFA

this story is so effing weird
Response should be, fuck you, see you in round 6 kid…
Yeah UDFA is by far his best outcome. Not sure how much leverage he has.
Something to me says he’s going to be a suspect.
Michael Bennett just went. Interesting only because analysts were talking about him going to teams as early as the 3rd.
I hope the Eagles trade back just to start trolling
Was just gonna say, I wonder if we even use these picks.
Just keep trading back Til we have like the last 5 picks in the draft just to make media and fans wait lol
Unfortunately, comp picks can’t be traded
Trade all of our remaining picks for 2 5ths and a 6th next year. I’d love it.
3 man draft class ! do it chip!
#innovative
#mortgagethepresent
Buddy Ryan’s way ahead of Kelly on that.
And Ditka’s even further ahead
I wonder what players in the NFL exist now that would be worth trading your entire draft class for.
Not Tom Brady he’s too old, but Aaron Rodgers? I probably would.
JJ Watt would be worth at least a huge chunk of a class, if not the whole thing.
Watt if you have a QB
otherwise, just Rodgers
that’s it.
And you’d probably have to throw in a nice portion of your next draft
For Rodgers I’d say so… Depending on how many picks you have and where they are you might be able to just do one class for Watt.
Rodgers I’d give my 1sts for the next 5 years easy.
I don’t think there’s any offer any team could make — strictly talking picks — that would get Rodgers free from GB.
Not unless Hundley turns out to be AR-II
Rodgers or Luck.
Could you imagine? No Mariota and this “genius” only got 3 players? It would be so entertaining just to hear fans and media lose it
Redskins just drafted Michael Tevin, a CB from Arkansas who doesn’t even have H/W info on NFL.com.
He’ll probably terrorize us for the next decade. #Eaglesluck
Also his name is actually Tevin Mitchell.
#info
big-sized CB
former HS all american
He’s 6’0″. Probably better than Brandon Boykin based on that measurable.
Some NFL head coaches may agree with you on that
Including ours.
that’s a bingo
If he’s there at #191, Daryl Roberts would be a great pick.
CAN WE PLEASE STOP TALKING ABOUT “THE MEDIA” IN EVERY THREAD?
love Roberts
Rachel Nichols has nice hair.
Oh yes.
Kind of has a nice conspiracy theory feel to it. “They’re out to get me, you know.”
Possible Eagles target Tyrus Thompson gone to Minn
Who did the vikings trade up with?
Falcons
Giants took Eagles target Geremy Davis.
Who did Chicago and TB pick? Why don’t these worthless pricks at NFL.com do their fricking job and update the tracker in a timely manner?
TB took Kaelin Clay. Chicago took Tayo Fabuluje.
Lol Clay
They’ve been stuck at 182 for like 15 minutes now.
I don’t get why the broadcast thinks its better to have these idiots talk the entire time instead of letting us watch the picks get calledl.
Please draft Collins, I’m not even joking…ma chance at his talent is more valuable then our next 3 picks combined
Almost there everybody
Where does one go to apply for the job of NFL draft tracker updater. Because they obviously have no standards, must be a cushy gig.
Seriously what pick are we even on? Draft tracker still stuck at 182 on nfl.com. Guy in charge of that went for a bathroom break and a smoke.
Clevelend took Charles Gains, CB, at #189. Two picks until Eagles.
Cleveland just took CB Charles Gaines at 189
5’9 was not on our board even i would think
SF is on the clock at 190. Probably gonna poach Daryl Roberts.
OBG?
That’s who the Birds should take
SF on the clock at 190, NFL.com tracker just now filled in pick 183.
Is Collins really going to go Undrafted? How can that be? Just a chance at exclusive rights to that kids talent is valuable and worth a 7th at least.
..
Just imagine the potential boost to our OL he would be…
…
If you didn’t like his characters before the situation I understand. But if you had no issues with the kid before this situation. It has to be worth a flier
Keep whining about it, maybe it will change Chip’s mind.
Maybe he’s the pick. I think we’d all love it
I know this is going to get shot down, but I have a small feeling that besides the legal scare, teams won’t want to draft someone that has specifically asked that no one draft him at all.
If that’s what the kid wants and that’s what’s best for him as he deals with a horrific situation (assuming he had nothing to do with it of course), I’m not sending the kid a big F you, ignoring his request, making his situation worse and trying to capitalize on his tragedy by forcing him to give up a potentially significanly higher contract if he’s cleared and able to sign as a FA with teams trying to out bid other teams.
How’s that go over well for your team and it’s culture when the only two options are the kid sits out a year, hates your guts and will never sign with you and you wasted a pick or you now have a player on your team that you basically stole for pennies on the dollar by turning his tragedy into a financial benefit for yourself where you can now force him to play for way below his market value. He hates you and can’t believe you would do that to him.
I think most of these coaches are human beings first and foremost and aren’t trying to mess with a kid that’s dealing with something this serious and asked specifically to leave him out of the draft while he deals with this tragic situation. In a real life serious situation like this you gotta step outside of the NFL fandom and draft hoopla and realize that these are real people, with real dreams and aspirations, dealing with real life issues. Teams should do the right thing and let the kid sort out the situation and sign as a FA, don’t add insult to injury after he’s just watched his life dream go up in smoke and try to benefit from it by screwing him over even more. It’s just mean and heartless.
WOULDNT mind…or eskridge if he still available
In the 6th, I’m okay with that. But they may wait a year to see Watkins and Couplin.
And Wolff’s last chance.
Derron Smith or Dres Anderson are my 2 guesses.
I would trade this pick for a 4 in 2017 (so serious)
SF takes T Ian Silberman (BC). Philly on the clock.
Greg Cosell on PE.com
I like Darren Waller too
Yeah I like him here
I HAVE NO OPINION ON ANYONE LEFT SO I WILL CHEER WHOEVER IT IS.
You’re supposed to rip the pick.
ill cheer for the position
OBG
Gerod Holliman? A guess. Playmaker, can’t tackle, but that can be taught.
It’s a good pick.
Yes, I agree. Give him a shot to show his stuff. He has potential.
JaCorey Shepherd. CB, Kansas is the pick. Guess they liked him more than Roberts.
Bruh Ifo must be hurting with his 3 mil somewhere
Who?
Had the lowest burn rate of any corner in the draft.
He was well known. Consistently rated anywhere from 4th-6th.
I was actually asking “who”.
Not who is he.
Sorry.
He was one of the best players available according to Kiper.
thx.
never heard of him
No idea who he is but he’s only 5’10
Boykins’ replacement?
should of went ifo in my opinion
can get him in the 7th
yeah but we don’t need more CBs now
edit: don’t need to draft short CBs back to back rounds
that’s fine anyways since olomu is completely overrated and coming off and totally shredded knee that required 2 surgeries I’m fine not having him
Chip’s just trolling us now. Wouldn’t give Boykin a shot because he’s too short, now drafts a kid just as short. Straaaaiiitt trollin all day at the novacare with the Chippah.
Shepherd is 5-11. Boykin is listed at 5-10 and that’s generous.
GR:
Is that the Combine measurement?
I think I saw 5-10 7/8 on the TV, so presume so. Boykin was listed at 5-9 on draft profiles. Shepherd is also about 200lb so he has 15-20 on Boykin. But is slower… nfl.com has him at a 4.64 40-yard time. May not be an outside corner.
good stuff
guess we’re going for the comp pick on boykin.
Why is that generous? Did you measure him yourself?
What? Sheperd is too slow to be a CB.
He’s a good pick guys, esp. in the 6th
Yep, no complaints from me. Ran a low 40.
YEAH JACOREY SHEPERD! HEARD GREAT THINGS ABOUT THE KID, WORKOUT ROOM WARRIOR LATE ROUND STEAL.

Mike Mayock says he had a 4th round grade on new Eagles DB JaCorey Shepherd.
lots and lots of bodies at CB this training camp
And safety. Gonna be some tough cuts.
Right now Wolff, Malcolm, Jaylen, Rowe, Max, Walter, Boykin, Carroll JaCorey, Maragos, Lion PS dude,
I’d prefer that, than what we had last year. Some CBs that made the team because the other CBs that were cut (Marsh et. al.) were so bad.
drafting some nasty violent tacklers at CB….I like it
196 coming up..
That poor guy that they got to read the pick…it’s supposed to be a fun honor…looked like it was pure torture for him to endure
I guess we found out what happened to the poor schmuck who was supposed to announce the Eagles’ 4th rounder
That was tragic …. that poor guy looked like he’d rather blow torch his own nipples off rather than read that card on national television.
Now grab Gwacham with one of the next 2 picks & I’m a pretty pleased dude.
He is still available?
Oh yes
OBG – OBG – OBG!!!
ok so I’m 100% with the Jacorey Sheperd pick since I have no idea who he is.
Now lets get another guy I’m 100% behind!
Danny Watkins is available.
He’ s on fire…
On espn draft tracker OL is not listed as a position of need for eagles
I think it’s pretty clear we’re rolling with what we’ve got at this point, barring some UDFAs perhaps. Chip has faith in #sportscience to keep JP and Evan Mathis eternally youthful.
Nobody available in the 6th round would make a difference. ol will be a priority next year
Summary: CB JaCorey Shepherd has the ball skills and man coverage ability to play in the NFL. Shepherd is a strong developmental candidate; he has instincts that simply cannot be taught but is largely a raw prospect who will need notable improvement at the LOS and with his feet. Shepherd is a Day 3 prospect but has starter potential. High ceiling prospect.
From NDT Scouting
Feet/COD: Lacks top end foot speed to drop off of the LOS and sustain cushion. Takes false steps and jumps out of stance at the LOS, conceding free release. High end linear plant and drive ability.
Tackling: Is unphysical as a support player. Will pop receivers at the catch point but in run support is passive and largely unaggressive in efforts.
Man Cover Skills: Very strong from the hip pocket. Feels receivers down the field. Shows great timing reacting to hands and is physical enough to re-route down the field. Needs more patience in press.
Coverage Instincts: Can bite on false stems and jump out of position; is a bit of a gambler. At best when asked to play a man, should not be asked to play deep zones regularly.
Acceleration: Burst from an overtop position to close on throws is very strong. Has only average long speed and burst when flipping open hips.
Toughness: Physical down the field from the trail position. Does well to feel receivers through breaks. Needs to play more aggressive getting off of blocks and supporting the run.
Flexibility: Has very good upper half mobility to reach and maximize length to play the football. Has only average ability to transition and flip open hips with speed.
Effort: Strong pursuit player in the open field after the catch. Willingness to stick nose in traffic and close down the boundary needs improvement.
Ball Skills: Regularly makes excellent plays at the catch point. Times hands well to break receivers‟ hands. Trails and tracks the football vertically and underneath very well.
Blitz Ability: Has linear burst to quickly collapse the pocket. Was not frequently asked to bring pressure; would be most productive from the slot.
I can get with This!

My non biased steal of the draft? JaCorey Shepherd CB @ Kansas. 2 years of film on him and not once did anyone complete a deep ball on him.
Whoa.
One thing is for sure, we should have a better secondary than the slip we rolled out last year.
Gotta love the Eric Rowe pick. Think that kid could be the solution opposite Maxwell.
Randal Evans
No one’s safe at CB except Maxwell
Good. Thyre probably sick of the sloppy play.
Wow
Brought him for a visit
Gotta believe we’re going BPA
Looks like philosophy is BPA regardless of position
Trade Boykin for an offensive lineman!
Yes, yes and yes. We have to be moving him now, right?
No, Chip’s never been involved with any discussions about trading any of our players. God you media types keep making things up.
You mean like with McCoy?
EXACTLY.
I guess bpa is the only way to go inn the sixth round but still…
Sheperd will be a safety in the league. You don’t want a smaller CB that runs high 4.6 to be a CB at all.
Whew, we are really committed to not bringing in any OL.
Randal Evans is the man. The man I know nothing about. But I like him. That’s my hot take.
Randell Evans has played outside CB, nickel CB, and safety.
Greg Cosell just said that Evans played all of 2014 at Nickel Corner.
Did anyone else hear that?
Yes, I heard that. Could have played the other positions in previous seasons.
#versatility.

Is a football junkie? because if he is then I’m sold he’s the real deal.
I wonder if they have an under the table deal with Collins to get him as udfa. Got to think he’s going to highest bidder
If we have an under the table deal with him we are fools to risk it and not just take him in the 7th..
..
If this kid is cleared on Tuesday im going to be sick we didn’t take him in the 7th
Does this mean they see Rowe as more a safety? At least for this season
Chip said in his pc that Rowe will be a CB
He said for now
thanks
Thing is we have no CB’s outside of Maxwell with a contract for 2016. Have to get in bodies to build depth when you really struggle to project CB’s to start outside of Early picks.
I have to think this is the case, unless there’s a deal in place to move someone. But considering how bad our secondary was last year, it’ll be nice to get some depth moving forward. When one CB went down, we essentially had to play dime.
Competition at that position will give us the best result.
I think the plan is going to be use a NT, 2 ILBs, and 8 CBs on defense. This will allow them to flip Ced, Cox, and and Curry to the OL.
Thought it was 4 ILBs and 4 CBs.
I was a little disappointed when we traded away our 4th rounder, even though it was a good deal. However, the way this draft has been going, i’m now ecstatic. Not a fan of any pick since Eric Rowe.
We got pretty good value for both these guys.
Meh, I dont hate any of the players, but i’m certainly not exited by anyone after Rowe, and not loving the positions we chose either.
I do agree that Randall is a nice value pick in the 6th, but doing it after selecting Rowe high and drafting ANOTHER corner 5 picks before. I’m all for adding talent to a bad DBs, but I’d take and pay Boyking over Shepherd anyway.
I personally dont trust neither Thurmond or Nolan Carroll, but why did we bring Thurmond in and keep Carroll if we wanted to add talent to the secondary like this.
Also, why bring in all those CBs, when the real position without talent in the secondary is the S spot next to Jenkins. Chip must REALLY not like Derron Smith, Drummond, Holliman and those guys.
I remember we were all freaking out when Andy went Lito / Sheldon / Michael Lewis.
Ended up being 3 great picks.
A first rounder and 2 second rounders, sure thats how you bring talent into your secondary, and boy our secondary was old.
6th round CBs, when our biggest hole is safety. Not the same thing.
I don’t know any picks after rowe
They’ve done a nice job today. I’m really excited for UDFAs too.
Chip as GM is better than I thought. I was more than a little nervous.
There has been zero head scratchers and I like the value
Just give me Gwacham in the 7th
1 pick to go… Who wants to bet its another CB?
we are getting the next Jason Peters
are there any left ?
Hope it’s manhart or the Oregon state or the byu olb
Strange we only got 1 offensive player.
Chip was laser focused on fixing the D. You might say he was obsessed.
I’d say he was more obsessed with fixing cornerback than the D.
It could be argued that was our only problem on D.
Safety? *boggle eyes*
It’s possible that Rowe could play safety for us. Thurmond if healthy is a good CB. Chip never said Rowe is definitely playing CB. Alot of so called experts believe that Rowe may be a better fit at S in the NFL then CB due to “stiff hips”. I may be wrong but I think he actually has more experience at S then CB. He sorta fits the bill of what the Eagles are looking for at S to a tee. At the same time don’t completely disregard Wolff, he did show some promise as a rookie and he should be healthy now. I know I’m higher on Wolff then most.
No, the injuries at ILB prompted him to stack up talent. He does not want that exposure in the middle again.
Well we certainly have the body count at this point, that’s for sure.
the OL depth didn’t bother him, maybe he forgot about the Rams / SF games. oh well, is what it is.
anon – he faced conflicting priorities relative to the draft class composition of talent. Trade-offs were in favor of fixing D.
yeah he could have just not liked ol on the board, we didn’t have much ammo in terms of picks either.
Isn’t that in a way roughly the same thing? Especially considering our biggest need on D was arguably CB. He also drafted an ILB in the third round if you forgot. Traded for one and signed one in FA as well.
Good call by Chip
Nope….reports are they are switching him to CB. Kelly likes versatile players.
Will people complain more if we don’t draft any OL, or if we wait until the 7th to address it?
6 on one hand, half a dozen on the other…
Honestly these 6-7th round guys have a real long shot just to make the roster, and if they do theyre more likely to be career backups than anything. So drafting an OL at this point seems like a real long shot to solve anything.
Of course every once in a while you get a Jason Kelce… so all hope is not lost for these guys.
One of the great legacies of the NFL is that the league is never without enough great UDFA’s to make a fan shake his head in wonder. Our best OL, Jason Peters, who may well end up in Canton, was not drafted. Larry Little, who was a stellar offensive lineman for the Super Bowl Champion Miami Dolphins of the 1970’s and is in the HOF was undrafted, Nate Newton, of Jimmy Johnson era Cowboys, was a UDFA and he will end up in the HOF, I’m guessing. Jim Langer, another of that Dynastic Dolphins offensive line, also in the HOF, also multiple SB winner, AND on the field for every offensive snap in the undefeated 1972 season – not drafted. These are just a few OL, but UDFA’s always seem to be well represented in the NFL at all positions. I’m waiting for Mano to discover a diamond in the rough at some obscure community college.

Good and bad. He can make the tackle after the catch, but he also allows catches. Also shows he is good in run support.
I am in for Collins with the next pick. I would have been okay with the last two. Didn’t he say he would sit the year out if he wasn’t a day 2 pick, though? Did he take that back? Am I misremembering?
It’d be better to just hope he goes undrafted at this point. If he’s undrafted, his only option is to sign somewhere as an UDFA. If he’s drafted, he could just not sign and by the CBA another team could select him in next year’s draft.
No, they are doubling down and repeating the threat today.
doubt he is drafted
maybe they have a under the table deal and that’s why chip is avoiding OL in the draft like the plague..
he didn’t take it back, it will take a lot of convincing to get him to sign. If no one drafts him he’s an UDFA
No reason to mess with the kid while he’s going through a tragedy, watching his dreams evaporate before his eyes and begging teams not to do him dirty and force him into a 7th round contract before he can clear his name.
Teams should do the right thing. Let him sort out this very real life issue and then if you want the kid, pay him fair market value as a FA.
Thing to remember at this point is you have to take the best player on your board – it is low % that anyone is more than a special teams/depth guy. Swing for the fences with player you think has the most chance to be a starter.
At the same time though, lineman make it from the 6th and 7th round at significantly higher rates than skill position players. I think you have to take that into account too when making selections in these low rounds. Whats worth more a CB that you have rated slightly higher with a 5% chance of succeeding or a raw lineman that’s rated slightly lower with a 10% chance of succeeding. Not sure what’s the right answer, but I’d be more inclined to play the odds and just draft all lineman in the 6 and 7th rounds.
BPA is great and should be the method used. However just like anything else it has to be used to a point. I love picks 1-3, but something had to be done to get some type of OL. I think it’s highly irresponsible to not address OL with a single pick the past two years especially considering age and what happened last year. Now take into consideration you have Bradford back there and you want to base your O on running the ball. Look what happened last year. Chances have gone up drastically of a repeat of that OL mess considering another year older and even less depth with Herremans gone.
You now put yourself in position that next off season BPA in the draft may not be an option to the extent it normally would be. OL without question needs to be heavily addressed next year. I thought OL was the biggest priority this off season.
No major holes on the team other than depth
QB, RG, any significant backup OL, backup OLB, and depending on where Rowe plays either a huge hole on CB/S where it would either be the injured Thurmond or the bad Carroll, or even worse at safety where Wolff, Couplin, Reynolds, Maragos, Jaylen etc. will compete to see who sucks the least.
Also, counting on a rookie DB is balsy, even a high pick, doing it with 6th rounders is laughable.
That is an extremely negative view bud.
Lighten up!
I was extremely happy with Rowe and very happy with Agholor, filled to huge needs and we’re great players at great value, or maybe good value in the case of Agholor.
Adding a 3rd round ILB to a spot where we, despite injuries, have Kendricks, Meco, the guy we traded Shady for who everyone just assumed will start, after we signed Brad Jones and have decent backups in Goode and Acho. Not a fan of the position choice, and while I dont hate Hicks, he isn’t good enough to make me overlook the fact that we wasted a pick on a position where we have both youth and depth. Injuries are a concern, but Chip made in painfully obvious that he CHOSE to live with that.
Drafting 6th rounders to compete with Carroll, which isn’t saying much. If you wanted to improve the spot next to Maxwell, despite already taking Rowe and signing en injured player, then dont draft a guy who Brandon Boykin would wipe the floor with. If you wanted to improve the safety spot, dont wait until the 6th round(especially after wasting a 3rd round pick), and dont do it with corners, even if you feel the value is good. If theres no safeties you like, ignore the positional need and tell us that after the draft.
Meanwhile, we completely ignored OL depth, which arguable we’re our biggest problem offensively last year, until Nick Foles got injured. And we did that while expecting Allen Barbre to start, and our incredible old OL to stay healthy. Cannot say i’m impressed.
I agree. I’m very underwhelmed with what we’ve done with the oline. Way too risky to not add someone in two straight years with our starters age and injury histories. I like Hicks the player, but investing that much in ILB seems foolish. Hell we had Casey Matthews and Acho playing significant time last year and it didn’t have a huge negative impact on the overall team performance.
However, our oline issues tanked our run game, made our offense mediocre, got our starting QB killed and stalled the offense completely in a few games (49ers). Oline was a huge need that was completely ignored in both FA and the draft. There were plenty of good olineman available at our third round pick. We could have possibly even traded back in the 3rd, picked up another 5th or more and still got one of the 4 olineman we were planning to take in the 4th.
Kiko, Kendricks, Ryans, Goode, Jones, Acho was more than enough players for what we need at ILB.

You can’t even construct a sentence.
This is assuming one of these dbs we drafted is for safety
Really like the Firsr pick… Not at all familiar with Randall.
not surprised were investing so heavily in the secondary the wrs in our division are crazy. everyone we have can cover.
I’m a little confused by Chips stringent metrics for players measurables. I love the little bit of tape I just watched on Shepherd after the pick, and it sounds like he never gets beat deep (in college at least), but are we really to believe that 5’11” with a 4.65 forty is ever gonna be able to play CB at the pro level.
By comparison, Bradley Fletcher ran a 4.44 forty and was routinely toasted on go routes since he couldn’t keep up. I’m sure his knee injuries cost him some of that speed, but 4.65 is so slow that it’s borderline reasonable that that should take someone off your board entirely for a CB. Cary Williams ran a 4.43.
He’s an inch taller than Boykin, but 0.25 seconds slower in the 40 yard dash. Just not sure, no matter how good he is, how he’ll ever be able to compete at a pro level with so little speed.
This far in the draft you just look for guys who might be able to play
Here’s something from CBSports:
PLAYER OVERVIEW
Kansas is hardly known as hotbed for NFL defensive backs, but with former Jayhawks defensive backs Aqib Talib (Denver Broncos, cornerback), Chris Harris (Denver, safety) and Darrell Stuckey (San Diego, special teams) each playing in the 2015 Pro Bowl, perhaps times are changing. Shepherd, a Senior Bowl invitee, is further evidence that this might be the case.
Shepherd signed with Kansas as a receiver and spent his first season with the Jayhawks on offense, playing in 10 games (starting two) and hauling in 15 passes for 252 yards and three touchdowns. He made the transition to cornerback as a sophomore, playing in eight games (including three starts) and recording 15 tackles and flashing the recognition and quick hands to break up three passes in 2012 that would lead to a breakout junior season.
Shepherd exploded onto the Big 12 scene in 2013, earning Second Team honors from league coaches with 45 tackles and 15 passes defensed, including two interceptions. He followed that up a year later with 13 more breakups and three more interceptions, earning a Senior Bowl invitation, where he showed the same intriguing athleticism and poise with the ball in the air that could earn him middle round consideration in the 2015 draft.
And some positive comments from them
STRENGTHS: Possesses an athletic, tapered frame. Light feet and fluid hips, which allow him to quickly turn and run with receivers. Will extend his arms to slow receivers off the line of scrimmage but doesn’t rely on a physical jam, showing impressive balance and fluidity for man coverage.
Good stop and start quickness, throttling down to leave little opportunity for quarterbacks to fit the ball in on underneath routes. Experience at receiver shows with his understanding of route concepts, often breaking with receivers. Quick, active hands and excellent hand-eye coordination to slap away passes as they arrive to rack up pass breakups.
High character player who has been acknowledged for his community support and work in the classroom throughout his collegiate career. Experienced kick returner, averaging 22.79 yards per return in 2014.
All great things and I really enjoyed watching his highlights. In fact, I loved the pick after seeing some film on him. He looks like a hell of a player. But once I saw the 40 time it was all moot.
You can compensate some here or there. Not everyone needs to run a 4.4, but 4.65 is getting up to the point where he just physically can’t compete at this level with that speed. If he’s not already past that threshold he’s darn close.
No matter how good he is at all those things, if the average WR in the NFL can just run past you on every play it’s almost impossible to compete.
Here’s an interesting study that shows that EMPHASIZING speed in later rounds does NOT correllate with more success at the CB position like it does in the first two rounds and that it’s often better to find CBs that are excellent football players but slipped due to having slightly slower times. But, it also shows that CBs that run slower than 4.55 are basically dead on arrival. There’s literally no precedent whatsoever for a CB with a slower 40 time than 4.55 being successful. 4.65 is a death sentence.

There have been reports that Shepard was injured while running his 40 times on his pro day. We will learn more about this as others investigate.
Chip: board pretty depleted on OL by sixth. Run on ‘em in second, fourth.
yeah they had no way to get up to the 4th.
At this point would like to have traded a 6th to move up a couple slots in the 4th to get one of the OL Kelly wanted. Hindsight though. I guess at least we traded out for value instead of a panic pick. But young OL will be a pretty large need next year.
Once the Eagles selected Rowe, there was no way — without a big move back into Rd 2 — that they were going to get any of their premium OL guys.
You are definitely right considering how the board played out. But given how bad they were in the secondary last season, I can live with the trade off…
I believe it was the right focus given the talent composition. Hoping a few rookie CBs stick.
That takes you back to the question of whether the Eagles should have drafted Jones in Rd 1 so they could trade up in Rd 2 for an OL; then take a WR in Rd 3 or 4
yeah was thinking that we should have traded back, could have gotten a good wr and still had picks for ol, but oh well.
that is a good question, I guess it comes down to how they honestly feel about Jones and if they think he is a significant upgrade compare to Rowe. And then you have to weigh that against the WR available later in the draft… ok, I think we need an economist to help sort out the valuations…
Just so I am up to speed, the last pick before these two CBs was the LB?
yes
Wow, that was pretty lucky for me. I was out with the family all morning, log on and hear the only two picks within 10 minutes.
Ravens just took mountain man Darren Waller
Coach Kelly: “The unique thing about (Evans) is that he’s played safety, corner, nickel. We’ve had our eyes on him for a while.
Kelly: The #Eagles haven’t drafted many DBs here in the last 10 years. We have to develop those guys. Can’t always rely on FA
Chip said won’t rule out DB in 7th round, either.
ICD:
Who’s out there at DB? I think everyone the Eagles brought in are gone . . . at DB, I mean
Isn’t his old buddy Ifo Ekpro-whatever-his-name-is out there?
That may be his man — followed by a tweet from IFO that Kelly promised he’d draft him if no else did.
Nonetheless, in his presser, Kelly once again talked about the need to satisfy his HWS measurables at DB (or be within a half-inch or so)
Chip: Evan’s been available for 2 years now and we’ve never had an offer for him.
Ouch.
Ow, there’s a shot at Rosenhaus.
Damn, shots fired! I can’t recall a coach or GM being that open about that kind of subject
Kelly doesn’t hide his disdain for players who aren’t 100% on the Kool-Aid
Hickup, hick, I’ll have another Boss.
I think the terms set by Eagles were not favorable, plus his age, plus his desire to renegotiate his contract. So old, expensive and greedy. Who the hell does this guy think he is?
Chip: La’el Collins not on our board.
Chip: Lael Collins not on our board.
Chip: La’el Collins’ not on our board.
but not everyone here agrees with him
so kelly must be an idiot
Chip: La’el Collins’ not on our board.
Grrrr. Wonder how they felt about him a week ago
No real difference between round 7 and UDFA. They are already prob calling UDFA targets…. Please get a strong center who can help me forget Molk was ever an eagle.,.
Greg Mancz, Mike Coccia, Ross Hall possib.
Yep, there is some potential NFL talent in that list.
Sign UDFA Safety Tra’mayne Bondurrant please!!!
Chip: La’el Collins not on our board.
Crazy that the Browns didn’t add any QBS or significant WR additions lol…as if Bowe and Hartline matter. Hope Johnny football has to start 16 games…
