Eagles vs Colts – PS Opener

Posted: August 16th, 2015 | Author: | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 1,027 Comments »

Excited?

The first preseason game can often be a sloppy affair. Still, I’m ready for some Eagles football. I’m ready to see third and fourth stringers battle for their football lives.

We won’t get any definitive answers today, but we’ll start to get a feel for who can play and who can’t. Every year there are at least a few guys who really struggle in the opener and then look much better the next week, but for the most part you see guys for who they are.

I wrote my preview for PE.com.

Simple goals.

#1 goal – stay healthy

#2 goal – good OL play

#3 goal – have some DBs emerge

It isn’t important that the Eagles win. The preseason is about player evaluation. Sure, it is good to win, but that’s not the focus. Summer football is about individuals and units more than whole teams.

We can also hope for a bit of fun. Does Bryan Braman have a sack dance? How will Raheem Mostert celebrate after his long TD? And so on…

Today is a reminder of why I can’t stomach TEBOW and why he can’t be allowed on our Roster.. Been waiting month after month to get to some Eagle football, we are finally going to play our first game of the year in two hours and the ONLY Eagles coverage on ESPN is about tim friggin TEBOW.. I cant take it
    ..
Stay healthy please!!! the NFL is a joke, making us play at 1pm in August is absurd…

  2. 2 Media Mike said at 12:10 PM on August 16th, 2015:

Maybe they can send Clayton Geathers on a safety blitz that Matt Tobin fails to pick up that seperates Tebow’s throwing shoulder.

I’d call that 3 for 3 in my book!

I hope they make Earl Wolff play every snap of this preseason game.. Don’t let him Sub out,.. Leave him out there to play in this crazy heat for all 4 quarters, run him into the ground rather then put our starters on the field

  5. 5 Media Mike said at 12:08 PM on August 16th, 2015:

exactly which type of skid mark is Earl Wolff?

This clown sits out all of OTAs after doctors and trainers cleared him..
    ..
Then 8 days into training camp he sits out of practice
    ,,
And now he dares sit out the first preseason game? He should be limping around the field, forcing someone to take him off the field
    ..
I’m embarressed to call this kid an Eagle… SCREW HIS TALENT, GET HIM OUT HERE NOW!!

  7. 7 Media Mike said at 12:07 PM on August 16th, 2015:

#4 goal – get rid of Tebow
#5 goal – get rid of Barner

Why is Demarco and Bradford on the field in full Pads, warming up (Murray taking hand offs from SAM?) WTF
    ..
While Earl wolff nurses his boo boo on the sideline like the bitch he is..
    ..
Why,does he even bother showing up to Novacare? Sat out all OTAs, already sitting out of Camp Practice, and now the sissy is sitting out of a preseason game? Please get this Clown out of Philly..l he shouldn’t be allowed to call himself an Eagle 1 more day..

  14. 14 GEAGLE said at 12:16 PM on August 16th, 2015:

Minor surprise for me is Jones and Acho as the starters at ILB. I figured it would be Goode in there over Acho or Jones.

  20. 20 Steag209 said at 12:38 PM on August 16th, 2015:

Did Huff change numbers on his own or did Tebow want number 11? It’s been bothering me because I swore huff wore 11 last year and after literally just looking at the kick return video I confirmed he was 11. It’s stupid, but didn’t know if anyone knew the reason

  21. 21 ACViking said at 12:48 PM on August 16th, 2015:

Huff switched from #11 to #13 after 2014.

So #11 was available to Tebow.

  22. 22 ACViking said at 12:45 PM on August 16th, 2015:

I don’t understand why some commenters treat Earl Wolff’s handling of his knee problems as a personal affront — requiring a string of expletives you’d expect from a 12 year-old in the school yard.

    1. The Eagles training staff and team MDs — in Kelly’s regime — completely misdiagnosed Wolff’s knee problem for a good part of two seasons.

    2. Wolff had micro-fracture surgery (mini). The success rate for elite athletes who play contact sports that require explosive moves is not particularly good.

    Wolff is not a “Pussy.”

He, most likely, has a bad knee that will never heal to the level required for NFL success.

    And he’ll be gone.

  23. 23 anon said at 12:52 PM on August 16th, 2015:

like kenny phillips, notice that clowney hasn’t gotten anywhere near a football field

  24. 24 ACViking said at 12:54 PM on August 16th, 2015:

    Great point(s).

And Brandon Graham’s never been the same. He can move straight ahead.

But, for explosive cuts, no one’s asking him to move laterally on a dime while a WR runs a route.

  25. 25 Tumtum said at 11:13 PM on August 16th, 2015:

He had a nice break up today btw!

  26. 26 OregonDucker said at 12:55 PM on August 16th, 2015:

My understanding is that micro-fracture surgery is many times not successful. So, he could have not healed properly.

Nonetheless, for those of us who have played the game for many years, we are very familiar with the high-potential player who does not have the mental strength to play the game. I felt that Undlin’s comments on Wolff, especially Undlin’s demeanor, conveyed a strong disappointment/distaste for Wolff’s lack of productivity. For me, this was the tell that the coaching staff does not support Wolff.

  27. 27 ACViking said at 12:57 PM on August 16th, 2015:

    OD:

I remember your comment from the other day regarding Undlin’s comment. Perceptive.

My only thing is Wolff’s knee is a problem for *him.*

And Kelly’s shown a propensity to short-temper ball players whom his doctors and trainers have cleared. (Except QBs acquired in trades.)

Bottom line. I don’t see why some people need to personalize the injury — as though Wolff is intentionally trying to hurt them.
    Weird.

  28. 28 OregonDucker said at 12:59 PM on August 16th, 2015:

Kelly absolutely hates slackers; whether they are stars or journeymen. I too have seen my share of these guys, and I tend to judge them negatively.

  29. 29 Tumtum said at 11:15 PM on August 16th, 2015:

    Missed the quotes. Mind repeating?

It is obvious the staff isn’t behind Wolfe.

  30. 30 Greg Richards said at 1:05 PM on August 16th, 2015:

There are injuries where you’re medically unable to play or practice and injuries where you can still practice but the issue is pain tolerance. It seems to me that Wolff won’t tolerate pain and won’t practice unless he think he has 100% explosiveness. I don’t think the coaching staff appreciates that.

  31. 31 Tumtum said at 11:12 PM on August 16th, 2015:

Thanks for articulating that so well AC! Really hate that.

  413. 413 Tumtum said at 2:23 PM on August 16th, 2015:

The way he grabs the ball away from his body is awesome. I wonder if he is over-doing it now because of the drop earlier where his arms stayed pretty dang close to his chest.

  414. 414 CrackSammich said at 2:22 PM on August 16th, 2015:

  417. 417 CrackSammich said at 2:23 PM on August 16th, 2015:

Is the OL allowed to push the RB like that? Announcers even called it out when Tobin just did it for Mostert.

  420. 420 Tumtum said at 2:24 PM on August 16th, 2015:

Didn’t a new rule go in last year about pushing the pile?

  421. 421 Greg Richards said at 2:25 PM on August 16th, 2015:

    That’s on FG attempts.

  422. 422 BC1968 said at 2:26 PM on August 16th, 2015:

The rule has always been you can’t jump on a guy to jump in the air to block an attempt. Remember the Seattle guy was jumping the whole Carolina team last year when he tried it? He didn’t touch anyone though.

  423. 423 BC1968 said at 2:25 PM on August 16th, 2015:

That could be, I don’t know though.

  424. 424 Crus57 said at 2:25 PM on August 16th, 2015:

AFAIK there’s a rule that says you’re not allowed to push the ballcarrier forwards.. but I’ve only seen it called as a penalty once, basically happens every running play.

  425. 425 RogerPodacter said at 2:27 PM on August 16th, 2015:

that is my understanding as well

  426. 426 Corry said at 2:28 PM on August 16th, 2015:

I think they actually changed that rule to allow it now.

  427. 427 BC1968 said at 2:29 PM on August 16th, 2015:

There’s been a lot of short yardage plays that it has happened. Not sure if it’s one of those rules they don’t enforce, or it’s just not a rule.

Yeah, that is true. The corner almost looked like he was going for the pass on Agholor’s TD never thinking it was going to be caught that early. They have whiffed a couple of other times on Agholor and then on Mostert’s big RAC.

  526. 526 BC1968 said at 2:55 PM on August 16th, 2015:

    Which one?

  544. 544 wee2424 said at 2:59 PM on August 16th, 2015:

He has been good in coverage and against the run but germaneagle is right. His pass rush looks very slow and weak. He looks really bad at going after the QB. I hope it’s because he is tired.

I thought his speed and quickness would show but it does not at all.

  545. 545 jpate said at 3:01 PM on August 16th, 2015:

He got pressure few times. One time it looked like he got held. Overall with the coverage and run support it’s a good game, more then most expected out of him at this point.

  546. 546 wee2424 said at 5:27 PM on August 16th, 2015:

He looked very good in coverage and against the run. Exceeded expectations there.

However I was very disapointed in his pass rush. I wasn’t expecting him to really have a sack. I just wanted to see pressure. I’ll never expect him to bully an OL but I thought he would show some of his natural talent which is speed and athleticism. You didn’t see that at all in his rush. He overly used the spin move which is his go to and the T would just easily push him away or to the ground. His spin moved lacked any type of speed or quickness.

As the third OLB he is going to be rushing against the ones, not the twos. For the most part against the 2s he was man handled.

not really. I wasnt a fan of him at Stanford. Aside from that, even looking it comlpetely unbiased, I look at what the eagles ask their safeties to do, and Reynolds doesnt even fit the job description. Ill never understand the pick.

  873. 873 Jarock said at 5:25 PM on August 16th, 2015:

True, but that’s not Billy’s preference. In his ideal world, he stays in base and his safety can double as a 3rd corner. That’s the whole reason why Jenkins and Thurmond, both ex-corners are our starting safeties.

  874. 874 Media Mike said at 5:27 PM on August 16th, 2015:

you know, it seems people throw out all logic to defend Reynolds. This has been happening since the day we drafted him. Im done on the subject.
Hopefully he plays well enough as a backup as long as he is here. And hopefully sooner than later, they find a guy who is a better fit so he can go somewhere else. Itd be better for us, and for his career too.

  877. 877 wee2424 said at 4:50 PM on August 16th, 2015:

I disagree, I think with some hard work he does fit what the Eagles want in their S.

  878. 878 HazletonEagle said at 4:51 PM on August 16th, 2015:

I think he is a very hard worker but just doesnt possess that kind of agility to cover WRs 1 on 1. Will never have that as part of his game.

  879. 879 wee2424 said at 4:56 PM on August 16th, 2015:

That is something he can work on. I think he has the physical tools to do so. Most 5th round picks don’t come out with the ability to cover NFL WRs 1v1 immediately. Most rookie DBs regardless if they are a 1st, 2nd or 6th round pick have trouble in coverage initially.

It’s now his second year and he has shown some progression. He just needs to continue with that progression. That’s as much as you can really ask for while being realistic.

He isn’t physically dominating like most DBa, but if he can master his technique he may work out. Undlin is huge for our young secondary.

  880. 880 Greg Richards said at 6:05 PM on August 16th, 2015:

  882. 882 Jarock said at 6:21 PM on August 16th, 2015:

  883. 883 wee2424 said at 4:47 PM on August 16th, 2015:

Why would it be fools gold? First pick was sort of a gimme but he did his job and was in the right spot. Second pick he read the QB and jumped the route. Showed good hands on what was a bullet. 891. 891 Media Mike said at 4:57 PM on August 16th, 2015:

With the caveat that there isn’t a lot of information available yet on the play of the “starting” guards today; would anybody be surprised if we read a lot of practice reports this week about the Ravens D line getting a lot of pressure up the middle that Bradford only plays minimally next week and the Eagles call 75% runs while Bradford is in?

I have nightmares of Suggs running a stunt behind the DE, smoking Barbre, and killing Bradford.

  892. 892 Fufina said at 4:59 PM on August 16th, 2015:

Well generally teams don’t blitz much – especially with their starters.

Bradford needs to get hit a bit to see how he reacts, if he cannot handle the heat in game 2 pre season he will fair no better in 3 weeks time.

  893. 893 Media Mike said at 5:01 PM on August 16th, 2015:

I just HATE playing the Ravens in pre-season because they seem to always put kill shots on people in pre-season. Ike Reece accused them of playing “penitentiary ball” during a pre-season game a few years ago and they body bagged Vick when he was a Falcon in a pre-season game.

  894. 894 wee2424 said at 5:10 PM on August 16th, 2015:

That’s part of what always has made them a good defensive team. They have a killer attitude, sometimes you can’t turn that off. All the best D’s in the history of the NFL have that attitude. Whether it was pre season, regular season or pro bowl Dawkins always had that attitude. I remember him killing people in the Pro Bowl.

You can’t expect their depth to not play without that mentality. They are trying to make a 53 man roster spot just like most of the depth in the NFL right now.

I look at it as a test for our team. Will they respond or be bullied?

  895. 895 Media Mike said at 5:11 PM on August 16th, 2015:

    Exactly.

So I’d prefer to avoid that in fake games.

  896. 896 wee2424 said at 5:49 PM on August 16th, 2015:

They aren’t quite what they were in the past so I don’t think you have to worry about it to the extent you may have had to a few years back.

However I like it, let’s see what this team is made of. You don’t want to find out they can’t handle a bully or a dogfight midway through the season or in the playoffs. Let’s learn now, and give the young guys a taste of it so they aren’t overwhelmed when the games do count.

  897. 897 wee2424 said at 5:05 PM on August 16th, 2015:

I thought Gardner and Barbre were very solid in limited action. Surrounded by Peter’s, Kelce, and LJ them being solid may be all we need.

We won’t get a real feel for then untill the regular season when they are targeted though. People seemed confused at times as to why our depth at OL looked so good in pre season but struggled in the regular season last year. The reason is because in the pre season they weren’t targeted and in the regular season they were. Nobody is going to target JP, LJ, and Kelce when you have Gardner or Tobin inside last year.

  898. 898 Jarock said at 5:13 PM on August 16th, 2015:

Graff was the only guy I noticed who really played like garbage today. Colts beat him like a drum all game long. Was a bit disturbed by the lack of pressure from the 2nd and 3rd team DL and LB. Overall, nothing to really complain about though. Thought that the Eagles didn’t play all that sharp, but still handily beat the colts. I’ll take that every week.

  907. 907 Media Mike said at 5:25 PM on August 16th, 2015:

That is true, but for better or for worse if Kelly wants a guy; the trigger gets pulled. So I agree with “who knows” on how Kelly may have seen or not seen Bridgewater.

  908. 908 Jarock said at 5:30 PM on August 16th, 2015:

That’s what makes Tebow on the team at all so baffling to me. Whether your a fan of running QB’s or not (and I know you’re not, Media Mike), Tebow’s habit of holding the ball is maddening.

Thought that both Barkley and Tebow played exactly as I expected. Barkley is a low upside guy who understands the game. Reminds me of Ty Detmer a bit. Tebow is an good athlete who has improved his accuracy, but still doesn’t really understand how to play QB in a pass first league.

  909. 909 Media Mike said at 5:33 PM on August 16th, 2015:

Tebow literally has zero clue on what to do when his first read isn’t there. That doesn’t mean that he can’t be helpful using a gimmick play that is never ever a repeat of a prior gimmick play, but the team would be screwed if he had to play extended snaps due to injury.

  913. 913 Jarock said at 5:40 PM on August 16th, 2015:

  914. 914 Media Mike said at 5:41 PM on August 16th, 2015:

  919. 919 Jarock said at 6:04 PM on August 16th, 2015:

He’s capped talent wise. He understands the game, but lacks the gun of a top flight pocket QB or the athleticism of a two-way QB. He makes the most out of his limited talent, but I’m convinced he’ll never be more than a decent back-up. Bennett, despite the picks, has more upside both in arm-talent and athleticism.

    ..
Ed did nothing last year, but today he looked like the intercepting Ball Hawk he was as a sophomore.. Happy for the kid
    ..
Braman also may have earned himself some #2nd team OLB reps maybe fill in for Travis long
    ..
“Barkley in year 3 of this offense should show growth and wipe the floor with Tebow who just learned the offense 3 months ago”….. So far that held true.. Good for Barkley, he hasn’t been given anything here happy he starting to show some growth.. Let’s see if he can build off if against the Ravens

    – Multiple shots of the kids playing football at halftime. The NFL has done this now in a couple of preseason games.

Good thing or more a sign by them to try to counter the rampant drop in Peewee football environment?

    – The multiple commercials for ‘Eagles Way’ where the Eagles are just trying to ring more $$$ out of their fan base. No mention of even a portion of it going to charity except efforts to promote youth football.

  944. 944 ACViking said at 6:09 PM on August 16th, 2015:

    Agree . . . Manning – Colts of early 00s.

And that Colts defense, I think, was weaker than any defense Elway had in the 80s.

Somehow, from 1985-89, during the regular season and AFC playoffs, Broncos DC Joe Collier was able to get the “Orange Crush” to deliver decent to good to even excellent stats (1st in Pts/3rd in Yrds – 1989).

But in the SB . . . car wreck

Marino never won and Manning, despite the gaudy stats, has one SB to his credit and he beat an extremely mediocre Bears team that season.

  961. 961 Jarock said at 6:14 PM on August 16th, 2015:

Point being, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Colts follow a similar pattern. They’ve got to get better on D if they want to win in the post-season. Just got steamrolled by the Pats last year and I don’t see much improvement on that side of the ball.

  968. 968 BobSmith77 said at 6:21 PM on August 16th, 2015:

As for Marcus Smith II, just look at his arm muscle size and definition vs the other Eagles’ LBs including Goode. It is a really pronounced difference even for a guy who has supposedly added 10 pounds of muscle, there is almost no definition in his upper arm.

Twice today to tried a basic bull rush on the T only to be deflected harmlessly outside or grappled & enveloped.

Few other plays too where he easily suckered and blew lane assignments or outside contain.

Eagles desperately need for him to pick up for some of the slack with Cole gone and I still saw a guy today who did make a few plays but also showed limited awareness & lack of strength or passing rushing technique too.

If he is a meaningful contributor this year and an effective pass rusher by the end of the season, the Eagles coaching staff deserves a lot of credit.

  969. 969 Media Mike said at 6:22 PM on August 16th, 2015:

I still love his potential, but he’s the classic example of why you don’t reach on a 2nd round talent in the first round. The guy was done no favors by being placed into a draft status that has higher performance demands.

I’m still optimistic he works his way into a good OLB.

  972. 972 Jarock said at 6:24 PM on August 16th, 2015:

I was happy with how he played the run with the exception of getting totally fooled on the R/O by Bennett. Also thought he flashed in pass coverage. Needs to get nastier and more instinctive when trying to pass rush.

  973. 973 BobSmith77 said at 6:25 PM on August 16th, 2015:

Agreed on the pass rush thing. Decide before the snap and just go with it. There are times he seems to not be sure what pass rushing move he wants to execute especially if it is uncertain that will be a pass.

  974. 974 Jarock said at 6:31 PM on August 16th, 2015:

Wouldn’t mind seeing Braman play vs. the ones and twos in the next few games. Love his violent approach to the game, but not convinced he’s athletic or strong enough to do the job against starters.

  975. 975 Mitchell said at 6:33 PM on August 16th, 2015:

To MSIIs credit, he did use 2 spin moves today. The first of which won’t be mistaken for Freeny but was pretty quick, unfortunately he ended up tripping at the end. The second spin was a bit better, he used a speed rush to get the LT going to the outside and then spun back in. Got a little pressure on the qb and it may have been a sack of it wasn’t a quick throw. The only truly negative thing, as mentioned elsewhere was getting fooled by the option, however, I have seen him blow that play up in college. He wasn’t as agressive as he needed to be and I pray he develops more of a nasty streak.

  976. 976 wee2424 said at 6:46 PM on August 16th, 2015:

You saw exactly what I saw. Good moments in coverage and against the run but I did not initially like what I saw while rushing the passer.

I will say this, maybe I’m wrong but he did seem to play more then almost anyone else on D and it was well over 100 on the field. On top of that he was rushing the passer, shooting the run, and covering TE’s 20 or so yards downfield. He was asked to do more then anyone else on D and I think he was thoroughly exhausted.

I think you are making to much out of his physical appearance. He naturally is taller and has longer arms so his muscles are not as bunched as say BG or Barwin. Aldon Smith has roughly the same frame so he doesn’t look as strong as he really is. When I saw him on NFL network in regular street clothes I was shocked, he looked more like a big WR. Size isn’t always strength. I do think Smith has enough strength now.

From what I could see the issue seemed to be technique and exhaustion which leads to a lack of technique.

Rushing then passer in a way is like pitching. You have to set the T up.

I think he will look better in regular season because BG will be bull rushing the T alot, and then a fresh Smith will come in with the speed and spin moves.

I was very impressed regarding his coverage and run stopping. I initially was very disappointed in his pass rush untill I really thought about it.

There were times where he did have an effective bull rush and got pressure but it was hard to see because the backfield was crowded and it was on the side of the field opposite of the camera. The times he didn’t look good it was more in the open and you could clearly see. It was one of those things were it was just to easy to see the bad and just physically hard on your eyes to see the good.

Again, complete exhaustion had alot to do with it I believe.

I respect Tim for his faith. I respect him for his work ethic. Doesn’t change the fact that he’s a mediocre to poor talent at best who is unlikely to ever start another game at QB. Move on.

  979. 979 Greg Richards said at 6:37 PM on August 16th, 2015:

Okay, post Preseason Game 1 projected 53-man roster:

    QB(3): 7 Bradford|3 Sanchez|2 Barkley
Comments: I don’t particularly like either Barkley or Tebow but I assume they’ll keep 3 QBs and push come to shove I go with the better pure QB and not some guy that can only do well in a specialty package.

    RB(3): 29 Murray|24 Mathews|43 Sproles
Comments: Kelly seems to prefer keeping 3 RBs and 4 TEs when constructing a roster. He kept Igwenagu initially in 2013 and Burton last year. Many thought that Josey or Tucker would stick as a 4th RB last preseason as it didn’t happen. With both Barner and Mostert showing the ability to contribute, we should be able to keep one of them on the PS.

    WR(6): 17 Agholor|13 Huff|81 Matthews(slot)|14 Cooper|16 Ajirotutu|19 Austin(slot)
Comments: Outside shot that Bailey or one of the other WRs beats out Cooper but regardless of what one thinks of him as a receiver he is a pretty good STs player. Possible also they only go with 5 WRs on the 53-man roster but I doubt it.

    TE(4): 87 Celek|86 Ertz|47 Burton|83 Tomlinson
Comments: Again, I think Kelly would like to keep 4 TEs and Tomlinson is coming on. They need to develop a blocking TE behind Celek. I don’t think Tomlinson would go unclaimed if we tried to move him to the PS.

    OL(8): 71 Peters|76 Barbre|62 Kelce|66 Gardner|65 Johnson|79 Moffitt|64 Tobin|61 Vandervelde
Comments: There are 4 contenders for the RG position and that tells me that the 3 who don’t win the starting job are the most likely reserves. Even with only 8 OL, they have flexibility as Barbre can play any position except C, Moffitt can play RG or C, Vandervelde is getting tried at RG and has experience at LG and C, and Tobin, while better on the left side, has practiced at all 4 non-center positions. Ideally, you’d have a 9th developmental lineman that strongly pushes for a roster spot but as of now there are other players I like better for our 53 and hope we can get guys like Bunche and Boyko on the PS.

    DL(7): 91 Cox|96 Logan|72 Thornton|93 Bair|94 Allen|75 Curry|97 Hart
Comments: Possible they only go with 6 here but Curry could contribute at OLB too so I think they go heavy at this position.

    LB(9): 55 Graham|50 Alonso|95 Kendricks|98 Barwin|90 Smith|59 Ryans|52 Jones|56 Braman|58 Hicks
Comments: Acho could push for a 10th spot but hard to keep that many considering needs at other positions.

    CB(5): 31 Maxwell|23 Carroll|32 Rowe|38 Biggers|37 Watkins
Comments: Tough call at the 5th spot here. Watkins got the start to day which tells me the coaching staff has hopes for him. While his tackling was rough, he did well in coverage. In the end I think his versatility gives him the edge over Rice.

    S(5): 26 Thurmond|27 Jenkins|42 Maragos|33 Prosinski|30 Reynolds
Comments: I think it is close to a lock that Maragos and Prosinski make the team due to special teams prowess. They will be part of the 45-man gameday roster so the 5th S spot is developmental if they decide to keep one. If you suffered an injury at S during a game, Maragos or Prosinski may come in but it is also possible they shift Biggers or Watkins there. Considering Wolff’s injury, Reynolds and Couplin will probably battle it out. They could easily decide to keep only 4 safeties and keep another player at a different position such as Rice at CB.

    ST: 46 Dorenbos|1 Parkey|8 Jones
Comments: Hopefully Parkey finds his groove.

  980. 980 Media Mike said at 6:41 PM on August 16th, 2015:

Strong work. I don’t 100% agree because I think you need to keep a 9th o-lineman due to the lack of quality of anybody not named Peters, Johnson, and/or Kelce in that group.

I’d cut Bair. Especially because Cox and Logan are going to be playing a ton of snaps.

Also, if Cooper isn’t going to start, why keep him on the roster? He’s overpaid as is, so paying him that contract to ride pine is kind of a waste. I’d love to see him cut.

And thank you for cutting Barner. He played well today, but I don’t want him on the team.

  981. 981 Jarock said at 6:47 PM on August 16th, 2015:

While I wouldn’t mind seeing Cooper cut, it ain’t my money. Don’t care if he’s a starter or backup. Would rather see Huff, Agholor and Matthews get most of the snaps, but sounds like they plan on rotating receivers.

I’d consider keeping Barner if we didn’t already have Sproles and I didn’t think Mostert has the higher upside.

  982. 982 Jarock said at 6:43 PM on August 16th, 2015:

    Can’t really argue much.

RB – Would like to see Mostert as the higher upside guy on the PS.
LB – Acho outplayed Hicks by a mile, but given that Hicks is a 3rd rounder, he probably makes it regardless.
CB – No way Watkins doesn’t make the team barring him playing like complete garbage the rest of the offseason. He’s still the favorite to be the new nickel. Biggqars actually had a better game, but I don’t trust him.

  983. 983 Media Mike said at 6:46 PM on August 16th, 2015:

  985. 985 FairOaks said at 7:31 PM on August 16th, 2015:

I’m guessing Hicks is more of a Ryans replacement, which probably won’t happen until 2017. Alonso though may be the Kendricks replacement.

  986. 986 Jarock said at 7:33 PM on August 16th, 2015:

  987. 987 FairOaks said at 7:40 PM on August 16th, 2015:

Could be, but Alonso and Hicks are being paid chump change the next 2-3 years and Ryans isn’t too bad a contract. And the cap will be going up. They could pay Kendricks a decent amount or use the money on other positions. It may well depend on how well the group plays this year.

  988. 988 HazletonEagle said at 6:57 PM on August 16th, 2015:

Objectively, I think we should all say Tebow has improved as a thrower. And considering what he is – a backup- he looks like hed be ok considering he has about 2 years of rust to knock off. I mean, really, all that in mind, he pretty decent today.
Biggest flaw was that he held the ball too long. And, the run game went to crap with him in probably having a lot to do with him making the wrong reads on keeping, or handing it off.
Those things can improve with more playing time.
Problem for him is, Barkley may have finally had the lightbulb go on. He looked 10x better than he ever has in an eagles uniform. The timing probably wont work for Tim. Hes not as good right now.

Tebow, although I agree the throwing motion has improved, still takes too long to figure out what’s going on when his first read isn’t there.

Also, a rating of 68 for the game still kind of sucks.

  990. 990 OregonDucker said at 7:14 PM on August 16th, 2015:

Chip mentioned that on several occasions Eagles WRs ran the wrong routes for Tebow. The OL was very poor also when he was in the game. I’m not a Tebow apologist by any means, but we need to see him in games where his teammates play better.

  991. 991 Jarock said at 7:15 PM on August 16th, 2015:

I got that feeling too, but I wasn’t happy with his approach late in the game either. OL was getting trashed and he was holding the ball and trying to extend plays. Not smart at all.

  992. 992 Media Mike said at 7:15 PM on August 16th, 2015:

That is true, think that’ll happen vs. the Ravens?

  993. 993 Jarock said at 7:18 PM on August 16th, 2015:

I somehow doubt our OL depth improves 😛

Making me miss the days of Andy Reid drafting two to three OL every year.

  994. 994 OregonDucker said at 7:18 PM on August 16th, 2015:

I believe some of those OL and WR will be cut. There is really no excuse for some of the poor play I saw.

My guess is that Chip will start Tebow after Sanchize so that he has a more talented team around him. No excuses after the next couple of games.

  995. 995 Jarock said at 7:20 PM on August 16th, 2015:

Rough on Matt, but probably the only way to get an honest evaluation of both guys.

  996. 996 Media Mike said at 7:21 PM on August 16th, 2015:

I’ll be shocked if Tebow looks any better with a higher level of teammate.

  997. 997 OregonDucker said at 7:22 PM on August 16th, 2015:

You might see Barkley shopped to the Jets or another team next week while his stock is high. I think that would be a mistake to do, but nothing would surprise me during preseason.

  998. 998 Media Mike said at 7:22 PM on August 16th, 2015:

  999. 999 OregonDucker said at 7:24 PM on August 16th, 2015:

  1000. 1000 Jarock said at 7:25 PM on August 16th, 2015:

He had that one good run early with the Bills and hasn’t done shit since. Actually thought he might be decent at one point.

  1001. 1001 Jarock said at 7:23 PM on August 16th, 2015:

I’d be shocked if even the Jets are stupid enough to spend anything on Barkley at this point. Still, we can hope.

  1002. 1002 anon said at 7:23 PM on August 16th, 2015:

he could start on the jets or at least compete, same for texans

  1003. 1003 FairOaks said at 7:21 PM on August 16th, 2015:

Very true. But after watching today, while he can avoid the first pass rusher, I think if he starts scrambling it’s a miracle if it’s not a sack. He doesn’t have the speed to get away from the rushers really and his release is so slow he will rarely have time to even throw it away. Looked like he was trying to pass on the run today but that is when old habits come back, holds the ball low, and takes forever. He was sacked before he could even get into a throwing motion. If he can’t scramble effectively, then you better be a good pocket passer. And while improved, I don’t think he is all that close. The planned runs could be fun, and he looked reasonable on short passes, but I still can’t see him being worth a roster spot.

  1004. 1004 OregonDucker said at 7:29 PM on August 16th, 2015:

With two or more OL missing their blocks and WR running the wrong routes, Tebow never had a chance.

I agree that more zone reads or packaged plays would highlight his strengths. But he can’t be a pocket passer when there is no pocket, except one formed by the DL coming to kill him.

  1005. 1005 anon said at 7:47 PM on August 16th, 2015:

he made some poor decisions on zone reads, but agree

  1006. 1006 FairOaks said at 7:47 PM on August 16th, 2015:

Yes, tonight wasn’t a great test for him as a pocket passer. I think you’re right that he will follow Sanchez next game to get a better comparison with Barkley.

  1007. 1007 Jarock said at 7:00 PM on August 16th, 2015:

Biggest thing Tim has over Matt is a higher upside, and that’s not enough for me. Keep Barkley and Tim can go back to being a commentator.

  1008. 1008 Media Mike said at 7:02 PM on August 16th, 2015:

Does he? I don’t know if you can improve on slow eyes and an inability to make reads. Tebow’s default to his first read being covered is still stupid running around with his eyes not downfield. I can’t have that on an NFL field.

  1009. 1009 Jarock said at 7:04 PM on August 16th, 2015:

While I tend to agree, it was hard to tell late in today’s game. He simply wasn’t given time to even try to make it to his 2nd read, let alone beyond. As far as upside, his arm is stronger and while you probably don’t care, he’s a much better athlete.

  1010. 1010 Media Mike said at 7:06 PM on August 16th, 2015:

You’re right, “athletic” is just about the least important trait I look for in a QB.

  1011. 1011 anon said at 7:04 PM on August 16th, 2015:

media coverage is terrible while he’s here

  1012. 1012 HazletonEagle said at 7:04 PM on August 16th, 2015:

eh…If Barkley can keep up his level of play like it was today, Tim doesnt have higher upside. Tim probably wont ever conduct an offense that smoothly.
He has a ways to go to be as good as Barkley- who is a backup- was tonight.
Tims obviously not a young rookie anymore. Hes close to what hes gonna be.
I see his ceiling as a decent backup for this team. Nothing more. Im not seeing all the potential.
Question to be answered was whether or not this was an anomaly for Barkley.
If Barkley regresses next game, its game on again.

  1013. 1013 Jarock said at 7:07 PM on August 16th, 2015:

Problem with Barkley is I’m pretty convinced that what you see is about as good as it’s ever going to get. He was ok today, but I still wouldn’t want him starting. Hell, I really don’t want Sanchise starting either. Neither is good enough imho to be a quality NFL starter. Sanchise is closer, simply because he’s got a better arm, but Sanchise is what he is too. A mistake prone guy who lacks the consistency to be a quality NFL starter.

  1014. 1014 HazletonEagle said at 7:11 PM on August 16th, 2015:

Dude, I call them Shamchez (because he fooled a lot of people with some stats last year even though he sucked), and Barfley because he makes you want to barf. I hate them both.
We are doomed if either of them have to start any extended period of time.
I didnt think Barfley was ever going to get better than he was though, and today he did. So yeah, this is probably his ceiling. But, today, he was actually better than Shamchez. By quite a lot.
Sanchez played like his typical self. He will keep that up. If Barkley keeps this up though, then Barkley is actually better.

  1015. 1015 Jarock said at 7:13 PM on August 16th, 2015:

Still didn’t see a single stick throw from Barkley. He had one really good throw against tight coverage, but it was still more of a touch pass than a drive throw. Sanchez was awful today. Missed a ton of wide open receivers. I know it’s fashionable to bash Foles now, but I desperately wanted him back late last season.

  1016. 1016 anon said at 7:18 PM on August 16th, 2015:

  1017. 1017 Jarock said at 7:19 PM on August 16th, 2015:

If he narrowly missed well covered guys, I’d forgive him. He missed wide open receiver after wide open receiver. That was AWFUL.

  1019. 1019 FairOaks said at 7:41 PM on August 16th, 2015:

Yes, although I think he got picked twice by Ed Reynolds, so…

  1020. 1020 Jarock said at 7:43 PM on August 16th, 2015:

    Upside 🙂

Yeah, he made mistakes and still looked more like a potential starting QB than either Barkley or Tebow.

  1021. 1021 OregonDucker said at 7:53 PM on August 16th, 2015:

In my opinion, we have much better depth on D than O. I thought our 2nd – 3rd string D did very well. Our O, on the other hand, had poor OL and WR play and iffy RB play. I bet we pick up some O players next week to replace some of our failures.

  1022. 1022 Jarock said at 8:03 PM on August 16th, 2015:

I’m not arguing with your assessment of our depth, but finding guys off the street who are better at this point will be tough. They also have to fight the learning curve coming in, which as we saw with Ed Reynolds last season, is steep.
