Ravens-Eagles Practice #1

No fights. No injuries. Just football. That’s the way you want to begin a write-up of a joint practice between the Eagles and the Ravens.

Going up against a possible Hall of Fame player in Steve Smith seemed to bring out the best in Byron Maxwell. Let’s start with Jimmy Bama.

Byron Maxwell also showed today why the Eagles paid him. In 1-on-1’s he did a great job jamming Steve Smith at the line. Smith was able to get free and make a short catch, but he was dominated in the first second or two of the play, which is all you need.

Maxwell can’t press on every single snap because defenses have to mix up coverages, but it is good to know that when he does jam receivers he can win. And Smith might be short, but he’s strong, tough and very physical.

Andrew Kulp from CSN was also impressed.

In perhaps the most anticipated battle on the other side of the ball, Byron Maxwell went up against five-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Steve Smith for the Ravens. Smith definitely got his on a few occasions, but overall Maxwell held his own against a player with 915 catches, 13,262 yards and 73 touchdowns through the air for his NFL career. Generally speaking, the fifth-year cornerback blanketed all Baltimore wideouts, especially down the field. Maxwell is exceptional at running stride for stride with receivers, watching their eyes, then turning around to locate the ball himself.

Maxwell isn’t just a big, physical corner. He is smart and skilled as well. I think that overall combination is why the Eagles were willing to pay him so much without him being a guy with a long track record.

And finally Tim McManus.

It’s one-on-one time, and Smith decides to take out his aggravations on Byron Maxwell. The two get physical before Smith separates and steps in for a short completion. He wins another battle with Maxwell moments later.

Maxwell’s spirits are still high, though. He’s talking it up on the sideline as the drills play out, encouraging each defensive back after they make a play.

And

Maxwell is looking good in team drills. Twice Kamar Aiken tries to beat him on a fly route down the right sideline, and twice he is denied.

Having deep speed and being able to cover downfield is just another key part of Mawell’s arsenal.

* * * * *

The performance of Eric Rowe seemed to get the attention of those covering the practice. From Jimmy Bama.

Eric Rowe had a rough day. In 1-on-1’s he was roasted a few times by the short and shifty Michael Campanaro. That’s a bad matchup for Rowe. While I think Rowe will eventually be effective jamming receivers at the line on the outside, he’s going to struggle against shiftier guys who get free releases in the slot, and that showed on the field today. He was also beaten on a deep back shoulder throw to Steve Smith, as well as a fade pattern to Jeremy Butler. The one redeeming play Rowe made today was when he was beaten by Steve Smith in the end zone, but Rowe didn’t quit on the play and jarred it loose before Smith clearly had full control of the catch.

Rowe got quite an education. Campanaro is a quick, shifty slot receiver. Smith is short, but strong, physical and very experienced. Butler is a young receiver with good size (6-2, 213). Going up against different players at different spots is challenging for anyone, let alone a rookie corner.

Andrew Kulp on Rowe.

Eric Rowe got a firsthand glimpse of Smith as well. On one play inside the red area, Rowe trailed his man to the back of the end zone and wound up breaking up the pass. However, the second-round rookie never got his head around to locate the ball in the air, so while the result was positive, that kind of coverage can often lead to a completion or pass interference penalty. Later, the Utah product was sitting in a deep zone when the ball was thrown to Smith down the sideline. Rowe spun around awkwardly and Smith was able to make the catch uncontested. The rookie was also tagged for a pass interference on a deep attempt to wideout Kamar Aiken. It wasn’t all bad for Rowe, but certainly not his best day, either.

The key to having a day like this is how you bounce-back from it. Curtis Marsh got lit up by Tom Brady a couple of years back and it just seemed to destroy his confidence. It will be interesting to see how Rowe does on Thursday.

Back to Tim McManus.

Back to the Smith-Rowe thing. The veteran receiver catches a pass in the back of the end zone, but Rowe gets his arm in there at the last second and pops the ball loose.

“The light’s coming on for him,” said Maxwell. “He punched three balls out [today]. I don’t know if y’all realized that. He had three turnovers. He’s a playmaker, man. He’s got a knack for the ball.”

Smith apparently told Rowe, “I saw it in your eyes, you about to [expletive] yourself,” but obviously Rowe did just fine.

“He made a play, I think,” said a disgruntled Smith afterwards when asked about the rookie. “You can write whatever you want. You’re going to find out on Saturday.”

Rowe is flagged for pass interference while defending Aiken. It was a questionable call, and Rowe raises his arms in the air and starts barking at the official. Cory Undlin quickly puts and end to that, shouting at Rowe to knock it off. Another learning moment for the rookie.

Lots of good lessons here. Rowe always kept competing, even when things weren’t going great. And I love that Undlin doesn’t want his DBs going overboard about penalties. Right or wrong, you have to move on and get ready for the next play.

Make sure to go read the reports. Lots of good details I didn’t get into.

* * * * *

MISC

* Andrew Gardner continues to play RG with the starters.

* Walter Thurmond had an INT today. It would be so great if he turned out to be a solid starting FS.

* Cody Parkey had an off day. There is no need to panic, but this isn’t a good trend.

This year’s preseason is polar opposite from last year’s.

At this time last year, we were already freaking out. Nick looked terrible and Patrick Chung and Bradley Fletcher were our CBs.

    Tonight?

It feels like I can’t find a weak link on defense, and the offense has a healthy Sam freaking Bradford leading it. Super Bowl?

    Super Bowl.

I think the depth at OLB is still unsure. But as the preseason goes, we should have a better picture os te situation.
I’m still betting in Jones at ROLB and Smith at LOLB.

I think we should all be hyped for our chances this season.
Chip Kelly will be lauded as the greatest coach in Philadelphia Sports if all of these moves payoff with a SB win.
I like our chances as we all knew our offense can score without great QB, but insert a QB on Bradford’s level and you are looking at 40+ points a game.
Now on the other side of the ball we have a stellar D line, and beasts manning the LB’er positions.
Our revamped and upgraded secondary that finally has the depth to make a serious run.
If I were the other teams in the NFC East, I would be worried at the Eagles potential of blowing them out of the stadium on any given game.
Special teams? Fuhgetaboudat, we own special teams play an it’s not even close.
The Superbowl is definitely in our sights.
    Go Eagles !!!!!

    NOTE FOR OD:
I made a comment on what I think Chip may be thinking concerning Tebow. I would appreciate your thoughts on it. It is on the “Day after thoughts” thread at about the 660 mark (15 or so from end)…

  12. 12 OregonDucker said at 1:46 AM on August 20th, 2015:

Sorry I did not see your earlier comment, thanks for pointing me to it.

While some see Chip as a gimmick oriented, “college” coach he is not. He’s an innovator. Tebow gives him another arrow in his quiver of arrows. For him to play the role you outline, i.e. a red zone and 2 point specialist, Chip would have to have 3 active QBs under normal circumstances – which I cannot believe he would do. However, if his starter is down or is being held out for playoff reasons, then we have a different ball game.

I know Chip believes “Timmy’s” throwing mechanics have improved. Tebow knows the inside and outside zone reads, and can execute. He also has a good long ball for x-plays.

While I have heard and also believe he is leaning toward Timmy, the proof is in his play for the next few preseason games. If his decision-making improves with proper reads and progressions, he can deliver the ball to the right spot, and he does not turn the ball over then……

If Bradford is out, and you have Sanchize starting then Chip may lean on Timmy for a Quarter. Regardless, if Tebow is on the team, then we will probably see him play, one way or the other. Masoli was a terrible passer for the Ducks but Chip found ways to make him successful. Tebow would not be a problem for Chip and in fact I think Chip would love to design plays for him.

reposted from end of last thread, b/c if you live in NE this is all anyone talks about:

I was in the car a bit today and listened to more NE sports radio. Here is my new take on DeflateGate. They mention the Supreme Court Garvey case says that absent something like out and out lying, courts should not rule against arbiters. NE radio reads the court/judge as hinting he will overturn. I read this the opposite way.

My theory/guess: The judge wants it to settle obviously. He is hammering on the NFL b/c he thinks it’s unfair what they did, but ultimately would give a ruling UPHOLDING the NFL while taking all kinds of shots at them about their findings. But he isn’t there to rule on the substance, and in the end won’t.

He is hammering on the favorite to settle not the underdog. NE radio is wrong.

    There’s my hot take.

  37. 37 ICDogg said at 10:33 AM on August 20th, 2015:

I agree with your conclusion. Ultimately I think he would decide that the procedure which was collectively bargained will stand, unless this were something he found particularly egregious. Brady received due process because he got what was called for in the CBA. But that is the only reason this would stand, because the decision itself is not really fair, since it’s based on flimsy evidence.

  153. 153 Iskar36 said at 2:22 PM on August 20th, 2015:

When you read Chip Kelly’s quote, the headline seems like a slight exaggeration. Chip Kelly certainly didn’t give a firm yes or no, but it sounded more because Chip didn’t want to give a straight answer rather than him being uncertain.

As for saving Bradford for opening day, I’m not sure if you sincerely think that, but I strongly disagree with that idea. This offense has drastically changed from last year with at least 5 new starters, possibly 6 (RG, LG, RB, likely 2 WRs [Maclin/Cooper to Matthwes/Huff/Agholor], and QB). On top of that, Bradford has seen very limited live game action in the last two years. I think it is very important, both for him and this offense as a whole for Bradford to get some playing time in a preseason game.

And just to argue the standard “it’s a meaningless preseason game” argument, look around the league this year and every year in the past. Almost all QBs, whether they are seasoned vets or young guys, play significant snaps in the preseason. If those snaps are so meaningless, why do so many coaches risk their franchise QBs each and every season?

Especially in the post-free agency NFL, just about every player — maybe other than RB — needs to get time on the field in actual pre-season games.

The last few years I’ve been going WR heavy in the top rounds and then loading up on multiple RBs in rounds 3-6. Going for quantity at RB since there’s so many injuries and fluctuations in year to year performance. Gotta have good RB play to win and there’s so few good ones but RBs seem to have little consistency year to year minus the very few top backs. All of which are getting pretty old this year or have TD vultures on their teams. I’ve been burned taking a RB #1 to many times. Drafting Lacy, Peterson, Charles, Lynch #1 will be a strong move. But I say doing the less likely thing and taking Antonio Brown #1 is the better move. I drafted 4th overall I’m a 10 person league and ended up with Antonio Brown, Calvin Johnson, Jeremy Hill, Lamar Miller and Latavius Murray as my top 5 picks. I like that a lot better than something like Peterson, Demarco, in the first two rounds and then being stuck w Andre Johnson, Brandon Marshall and Jeremy Maclin at WR. I always wait till real late to get a QB since after Rodgers/Luck their all basically the same point outputs into the late rounds. I’ve won 3 out of the last 4 years w a similar strategy. Good luck!

Limited communication from Eagles (“we’ll see how he does here…”), followed by frustration from all sides that the inury is lingering, followed by poor play throughout the season (which may or may not have happened in any case), followed by claims that “Marcus was never right in 2015… we’ve never seen him healthy and at his best,” followed by more mediocre play, followed by claims that he is a bust, it’s all Howie’s fault, etc, etc.

  244. 244 GEAGLE said at 3:38 PM on August 20th, 2015:

    ..
“I’m anxious to play. I want to play Satrday. I want to get Hit, I want to get back up and show that im ready for the NFL season” -Bradford Today via Sal Pal

Mentally he is going to be anxious and Nervous in his first live action… Even if you play him a handful of snaps, I’d like him to face a LIVE rush at least 2 different days before Atllanta… Even if we only want him to play 1 series Saturday, and 2 series against GB, that’s FINE…. I just want him to have to warm up, mentally prepare for live action on 2 different days, deal with the butterflies, pLay thru them, and hopefully see on Both Occassions that he is able to get thru the live action healthy…
    ..
Let’s say you want him to take 20 Reps in Game 3, Id Rather give him 10 reps in game 2, and 10 reps in game 3…

Just my preference for getting him rid of Atlanta,. This is the most important player of chips offense, I will trust however he goes about getting his starting QB ready to play for the season, but I would be a little surprised to not see him on Saturday… this is the OL that has to keep Bradford healthy this year…Mathis ain’t walking thru Tbose Novacare doors, the starting OL and Gardner was very sharp in game 1, and they have all week to learn the tendencies of Raven players.. we are going to have to trust Gardner and Barbre to hold up anyway..

I wish chip would just make his decision public. The unknown speculation gets this FANBASE antsy..
    ..
When do you think we will get an official answer? an hour before game time?

But I would be a little surprised if SAM doesn’t play Saturday, but whatever

Kind of a weird feeling to be around the corner from the season and have no idea what our QB or Run game will look like…I didn’t expect to have no idea what, chips offense would look like in year 3. So many unknowns to fans…. could Bradford possibly look as amazing as he has in practice? What does Demarco and Ryan look like as alternating Ohysical battering rams, after being so accustomed to smaller shifty runners from Westbrook to Shady? What does Huff look like in a prominent role?
    ..
Its going to be weird in game 3 to Bradford and murray in the backfields leading the Eagles… Kind of weird that there are more questions sorrounding Chips offense, then our Defense of ST going into the season.

We have Lane Johnson, Jason Kelce and Jason Peters and they can handle the Ravens stellar pass rush with stellar O line play IMO.

  249. 249 Ark87 said at 4:22 PM on August 20th, 2015:

Practicing with the Ravens and having an ex eagles coach in Harbaugh may be a good thing.

That statement has no merit or validity behind it. Did you make that up or did you read that somewhere because unless you’re a fortune teller I don’t get how you can think that is the case. Of course they are coddling him what would you expect them to do. They traded assets, are paying him 16mil this year, and he hasn’t played in basically 2 years so of course they want to manage his reps. I don’t see anything wrong with it.

Demarco Murray played in all games last year and isn’t injured but he is being eased in and coddled as well and you’re not saying anything about that.

My basic premise is I am on board with them taking all the necessary precautions when it comes to the most important position on the field.

Chip has upgraded the entire team in numerous positions and has even upgraded several depth positions.
Our defense looks to be improved and Sam Bradford is throwing lasers in camp, connecting at a high percentage.
He looks the part and has an injurious past, so coddling him as you say, might not be such a bad idea.
Too bad for Marcus, but before panicking we maybe we should wait to hear what the extent of the injury is.
Smith is not a starter, nor was he so good that we should feel doomed, even if he lost for the season.
I am sure by roster cuts we can get someone if we have to, replacing his potential production or even get an upgrade. He is not that great to begin with.

If The plan is to keep Pope Mathews in the slot, but Jordan grows and proved to be our best WR.. What happens when we only have 1 or 2 WRs on the field this year? will Mathews be out of the game, or would he lineup at one of the outside Wr spots when the play DOESNT call for a slot WR?
    ..
With Ertz and Celek, we won’t always be 3 WR sets, their wont always be a slot WR…. We also will want to give Sproles some snaps lined up in the slot… I assume Jordan woulld play rather then sit him on the bench so Coop and Huff can play in 2WR sets….we can’t bench our best WR whenever we want to use two TEs or whenever we want Sproles in the slot…
    ..
Last year I understand letting a rookie focus on 1 role, but in year two, I have no problem with them keeping Jordan in the slot, as long as we don’t view our slot as the traditional #3’WR…. Jordan Mathews is ready to Soar! He needs to be our #1 WR, who we move into the slot during 3 WR sets..

  279. 279 Ark87 said at 3:36 PM on August 20th, 2015:

Especially the way we operate, once we turn on the tempo, there are no subs. You don’t want him on the bench when that happens. He’s at his best in those situations. Many people struggle to find one elite trait that stands out about Matthews on paper, he’s good across the board, but I agree with Kempski on this, the kid has unreal stamina, no matter how tired he gets, he never slows down, when we turn on the tempo, he shines.

Arizona lineman are dropping like flies both OL and DL..
    ..
RT Massie is suspended for the first few games, and Bruce Arians keeps ripping their first round pick DJ Humpries. Arians claims Bradley Sowell will start in place of Humphries to replace Massie at RT
    ..
Cardinals LG MIke Iupati (prized free agent) had surgery to repair a torn meniscus, forcing the Cardinals to turn to Ted Lansen to start in place of Iupati
    ..
on the other side of the ball, Darnell Dockett left them in Free agency, they replaced him with Corey Peters who has been diagnosed with a Torn Achilles. The Cardinals DL was already questionable now they have to turn to a 4th Round rookie
    ..
Stud LB Daryl Washington has already missed 16games via suspension for his drug Ban, and it looks like he won’t be reinstated any time soon..
    .
Sucks to have so much trouble in the trenches when you have an Old man at QB coming back from an ACL tear..
    ..
They also felt the need to sign C2J in the middle of August, shows what they thought about their group of RBs..
    .
This powerhouse 49ers window quickily slammed Shut….. And Bruce Arians better start worrying about his “Window”.. Older QB coming off a knee injury, mess of an OL, not much confidence in your RBs..DL issues… And Arians has soured on their young QB project Logan Thomas…
    ..
Bruce Arians ISNT going to be too excited to put this OL In front of the Rams,DL twice a year.. I’ll be surprised if Carson Palmer gets thru both Rams games healthy

I can’t put into words how grateful I feel that schedule makers are letting us play the Cardinals for the 3rd year in a row… Losing to them the way we did just doesn’t sit well with me… I CANT WAIT to play them, LATE IN THE SEASON when beating them could mean crushing their playoff hopes.. I despise that Team.. I want to destroy them this year, and when we beat them we will have been one 3rd down stop on defense short of beating Bruce Arians 3’years in a row which would have felt so so good… Hopefully when we play them, the Cardinals need to beat us to keep play off hopes alive, and I want us to be responsible for ending their season…

I love beating that team, especially this year, just to show them how dumb they are for letting Murray come to Philly.
I mean, of all the dimwitted moves the cowbums have made, this one takes the cake.
I hope Murray GASHES their D for 200 on the ground and 150 in the air.
Also it would be extra special if we can get Miles Austin involved in the trouncing with a couple of TD’s and a double reverse run just to rub it in.

It was hard to get a good read on what exactly happened in the scrum, but Mihalik didn’t appear to be involved. Instead, undrafted rookie free agent Diaheem Watkins was the one who got kicked out of practice. That’s standard policy for Eagles players who fight during joint practices. There were a couple more very minor scrums throughout practice, but nothing ever came to blows.”

I’m blown away by Eric ROWE… The kid was moved to Nickle CB, a new position he has never played, and like 10 days later he is battling hard, competing against Steve Smith this week…. Everyone knows how great of a,deep threat smith has been, nice to hear Rowe ran stries for stride with sMith when Flacco tried to test the rookie deep, tight coverage forced Flacco to overthrow it out of bounds… I despise rookie corners but this kid seems to a adapt quickily.
    ..
The way this RAW top young talent is picking things up so quickily reminds me of the growth rate of Lane Johnson…
    ..
Saturday, if the Ravens starters happen to lineup in 3 WR sets, I’d like to see us throw ROWE out there with the ones and see if he can answer the bell against Steve Smith in a live game… The Ravens probably aren’t going to play Smith much, but I’d like to see ROWE get thrown into the fire against smith… Once the ones leave the field, go back to rotating Watkins, Biggers and Rowe for the rest of the game.

Browns fans have been accustomed to losing… Almost like they’re institutionalized. Would never fly in most NFL cities. Even the Raiders try to win

Its a random free ESPN league. I only joined because I wanted to try and get an all Eagles fantasy team but some asshat saw my plan and took Eagles DST in third round.

Awwww when u said he cleared concussion protocol I got excited and thought he was going back in the game! Lol never know with those Genius’s in Washington……. No Head Injuries? I find that hard to believe.. You don’t lay on the ground for 3 minutes looking like you are dead over a stinger….. Stingers definitely suck, but it’s a sharp pain

Love what Brian Mitchell had to say about RGIII:

“You need to shut the hell up and start playing football.
That would make you important. Win football games in this city, and you
would have this city in the palm of your hands. You had it, and you’re
starting to lose it, because of your talk …

You came here to be a football player, not a damn philosopher. Not a
philosopher. Not a guy that’s always giving us these damn quotes. Who
gives a damn? Normally people care about quotes when you are successful.
And he has not been successful enough to be giving me a quote.

I’m 47 years old. What the hell, I’m gonna listen to a little
wet-behind-the-ears 24-year-old kid who’s done nothing, nothing, to be
sitting up here thinking we’re going to listen to him all day. Do your
job. Which he hasn’t done … I’ve watched this team. I’m passionate about
this team. And I see this one dude who we talk about every day too damn
much because he doesn’t know to shut up and perform.”
