Josh Andrews

The preseason finale is an interesting game. Some guys play a lot because the team simply needs them on the field to keep the team functional. Matt Tobin was the LT for the entire Jets game for this reason. Take him out and there is no other LT who could be counted on to give the QBs consistent protection.

Other guys play a lot to show the team whether they are worth keeping or not. John Moffitt played a ton for this reason.

Josh Andrews was the LG for  most of the game. I didn’t realize that when watching live. I found this to be very interesting. Andrews spent 2014 on the practice squad. He can play G or C. Andrews lacks ideal size at 6-2, 310, but he’s not small. He isn’t a gifted athlete, but moves pretty well and is a good fit for the Eagles system.

I haven’t been able to re-watch the entire Jets game, but focused in on Andrews and watched the majority of his snaps. He played very well on Thursday. The first thing that stands out to me is that he’s tenacious. Andrews is going to block until he hears the whistle. Or the echo of the whistle. Andrews was good in pass pro, showing the ability to anchor vs DL. He was physical in the run game. He blocked well at the second level. I really liked what I saw. Chip Kelly gave Andrews an opportunity and he took advantage of it.

John Moffitt played his best game yet, but didn’t look so good that you felt compelled to keep him on the roster. The reason to want Moffitt is for his ability as a physical drive blocker. He didn’t show much of that this summer. There were flashes, but you just don’t know if that will ever come back.

The Eagles just might keep Josh Andrews on the roster. They could keep 9 O-linemen: the starters, David Molk, Matt Tobin, Dennis Kelly and Andrews.

* * * * *

The roster as of 10am:

QB – Bradford, Sanchez, Tebow
RB – Murray, Mathews, Sproles, Barner
WR – Matthews, Agholor, Cooper, Huff, Austin, Ajirotutu, Maehl, Martino
TE – Celek, Ertz, Burton
OL – Peters, Barbre, Kelce, Gardner, Johnson, Tobin, Molk, Kelly, Andrews

DL – Cox, Logan, Thornton, Curry, Bair, Hart, Allen
OLB – Barwin, Graham, Jones, Braman, Smith, D Watkins
ILB – Ryans, Kendrics, Alonso, Hicks, Goode
S – Jenkins, Thurmond, Maragos, Couplin
CB – Maxwell, Carroll, Biggers, Rowe, Rice

STs – Dorenbos, Parkey, Jones

The obvious choices to be cut are Freddie Martino, Jeff Maehl, Diaheem Watkins and Najee Goode. The Eagles are reportedly shopping Goode so that explains the hesitation there.

What’s with Watkins and Martino? Could be they’ve been told they’re cut and it just hasn’t leaked yet. We find out most cuts through agent or player leaks. If those agents are quiet, you have to wait for official team announcement. Neither guy showed enough this summer to make me think they are in serious consideration for the roster.

But maybe I’m wrong.

You never know if the coaches have seen something we haven’t. Meetings, practices and other behind the scenes work are part of the equation. My guess is that they’re gone, but we’ll see.

* * * * *

The Eagles could still be making moves.

I don’t think Tebow will be cut, but this is interesting info. Again, we’ll see what happens.

I could see the Eagles looking for OL help. Dennis Kelly could be upgraded. Andrews would be great to keep on the practice squad one more year for more development.

Keep Andrews and cut Molk! Then bring in another OL. But the important part – cut Molk! He’s played all right this preseason but I’m still traumatized by the flashbacks of him being forklifted right into the QBs lap last season.

  2. 2 James said at 11:02 AM on September 5th, 2015:

Molk is bad, and for a coach that loves his measurables, I find myself scratching my head over him still being on the roster.

Gabe Ikard got cut. If they want a backup C, I’d look there first.

Guy I’d take a look at on PS. I’d want a more established vet on 53.

No, I’m waiting to see if the Falcons cut Asamoah. A few other possibilities but I don’t want to just throw out random names.

  7. 7 TommyLawlor said at 11:18 AM on September 5th, 2015:

I don’t get the dislike for Molk. He struggled a bit early last year, but got better the more he played. He and Kelce both get overwhelmed by some massive DL, but that’s the trade-off for having an athletic C.

  8. 8 Greg Richards said at 11:21 AM on September 5th, 2015:

To me, the difference is that Kelce would typically give up a little bit of ground but he’d then be able to re-establish his base before the QB was buried. Molk just gets pushed right back into the QB. I have only actually watched 1 preseason game this year. The other 3 I listened to the radio broadcast of. If he had improved his core strength, then perhaps Molk is deserving.

  9. 9 iceberg584 said at 12:20 PM on September 5th, 2015:

I blame Molk for the San Francisco loss last year. He was being driven back into Foles nearly every play.

  10. 10 GEAGLE said at 1:40 PM on September 5th, 2015:

He really was getting pushed into the QBs lap all year, no pressure is worse then pressure up the middle

  11. 11 bill said at 12:43 PM on September 5th, 2015:

I’ve been quiet about him this preseason since I haven’t really watched that much – he might be better. But last year, what I saw was a guy who had plus mobility for OL, but who was exceptionally weak at the point of attack. On the move, he was ok to good, but didn’t generally finish blocks even there. Inside runs and pass protection was, to put it mildly, bad. Totally overmatched, unless he got a lot of help.

  12. 12 GEAGLE said at 1:39 PM on September 5th, 2015:

Exactly…his mobility is irrelevant to me because he has to sacrifice way too much Power to be so athletic

  13. 13 stephenstempo said at 12:46 PM on September 5th, 2015:

Did you see the interview with him after the game ? It was comical. I think that might be part of it.

  14. 14 D3FB said at 12:53 PM on September 5th, 2015:

Gunn suckered him. It was a naive answer by a guy who hadn’t dealt with alot of jounalist (at least those that weren’t writing for the Michiganonier or whatever the hell the student paper is).

  15. 15 stephenstempo said at 3:43 PM on September 5th, 2015:

yeeeeah maybe but.. perhaps he should have tempered the whole “IT WAS GREAT” attitude after a crushing loss.. just saying.

  16. 16 D3FB said at 7:08 PM on September 5th, 2015:

The question was “David what was it like out there today?”

Molk responded that it was great to be able to go out and finally be able to play. Dissappointing loss but after struggling to make it in the league to finally be able to get to start was really exciting.

  17. 17 stephenstempo said at 1:14 AM on September 8th, 2015:

Yeah I get that. And yes it was very honest. That being said, you just lost. Maybe temper that a little bit with a throwaway “yeah I just think I need to get out there and do a better job.” Or a ” It was a tough loss but we’ll get back to practice moving forward.”

  18. 18 GEAGLE said at 1:38 PM on September 5th, 2015:

He is not good! He sacrifices too much strength to be as athletic as he is

  19. 19 Greg Richards said at 10:45 AM on September 5th, 2015:

If they’re looking for a QB, how about Austin Davis? Chemistry might already be there with Bradford. The Rams could use WR depth. Send Foles a familiar target in Jeff Maehl.

  20. 20 kevinlied said at 10:53 AM on September 5th, 2015:

Austin Davis fun fact: he walked on to Southern Miss’s football team and then started as a red shirt freshman.

His numbers are pretty good for a cast off, his intelligence and moxie are often touted, and he’s still young-ish. My rather uninformed opinion is that I’d prefer him to Tebow.

  21. 21 OregonDucker said at 11:20 AM on September 5th, 2015:

Maehl may stick. He catches TD passes and has some ST success. Toots has trouble with catches and is outstanding on ST. Special Team priority decides in Toots favor; good in both gives us Maehl.

  22. 22 James said at 11:24 AM on September 5th, 2015:

If Maehl makes this roster over Watkins I am going to laugh my ass off.

  23. 23 xmbk said at 11:37 AM on September 5th, 2015:

    ?

    Don’t see the correlation.

  24. 24 James said at 11:40 AM on September 5th, 2015:

Watkins, a guy that was projected to be on the final 53 by almost everyone, only spent one year in the system as a rookie CB is being cut. This leaves a roster spot available, I’m projecting here. If Watkins is being cut then Maehl certainly deserves to get cut based purely on talent level.

  25. 25 xmbk said at 1:00 PM on September 5th, 2015:

Why? Maehl is better on st, can contribute on offense. If the coaches don’t think Watkins can contribute, roster spot is better spent on Maehl. Take it you don’t like him for some reason.

  34. 34 Patrick said at 11:18 AM on September 5th, 2015:

If there was ever a time for Howard Eskin to be right, the report regarding Tebow would be the perfect one. I cannot fathom how i’ll handle watching Tebow make the team, especially since we know he’ll be fucking active on gamedays to go 0-4 on PATs.

  35. 35 Richaud Jeaffreson said at 11:43 AM on September 5th, 2015:

    Johnson, probably.

  40. 40 Bert's Bells said at 11:56 AM on September 5th, 2015:

  41. 41 unhinged said at 11:59 AM on September 5th, 2015:

Flynn can do some things that Sanchez cannot, like throw to the best option more often than not, and I think he’s generally more accurate. Arm strength is his poorest metric. He could be what we all thought Barkley was.

  42. 42 D3FB said at 12:23 PM on September 5th, 2015:

One thing to keep in mind on Tebow and other players. If a vested veteran(not sure if Tebow qualifies, think he’s considered 4th year player) is on the roster Week 1 and they haven’t yet taken termination pay during their career, then their entire salary for the year is guaranteed. A lot of the big names you see released today(or next Saturday before Week 1) will be brought back after Week 1 is over.

It’s possible Diaheem and Martino have been cut already, but I can see a justification for keeping both around up til now or beyond. Diaheem is the only backup who’s a true OLB, the right size, who can rush the passer. Curry is rougher in coverage now, Smith is not getting to the passer, Jones is smaller (but serviceable in all phases). DW may have a good NFL career. Martino is fast enough to spread the field, and they may be entertaining offers for Coop, Ajirotutu, Maehl and/or Austin.

Holding a press conference two hours before the deadline seems very un-Chip to me, as he seems to be frugal about every possible advantage.

  146. 146 Iskar36 said at 1:15 PM on September 5th, 2015:

I love the thought process it seems most of the reporters are having with Tebow right now. To paraphrase, “If there is an injury, the Eagles will be able to quickly resign Tebow because he will not get signed by another team.”

In other words, “Yay! When it actually would become closer to a possibility that Tebow would actually play in a regular season game if Bradford goes down, that isn’t a problem at all. The other 31 teams in the league do not view him to be among the top 64+ (starter and backup per team) QBs, so we should be in a great position to go and get him still.”

Explain to me why it is a GOOD thing that no other teams would be interested in signing Tebow? Shouldn’t that be an indication that we should look elsewhere as well?

  147. 147 D3FB said at 1:16 PM on September 5th, 2015:

But if we need a safety to play in Atlanta, thinking Reynolds is a step ahead of Couplin in terms of being ready to play safety in an NFL game… Couplin has more upside and Couplin is the better ST player which I’m sure factored into the equation when key ST contributor Proz was cut…. Safeties, Linebackers and TE’s are typically the best ST players…

  186. 186 GEAGLE said at 1:57 PM on September 5th, 2015:

Our OLB becomes a 4-3DE on 3rd down, not uncommon to see curry lineup at 4-3 DE, so he has always taken a few snaps away from our OLBs..now he will start to get OLB snaps on 1st and 2nd down… Curry can rush from OLB, Marcus can drop and cover
    ..
With Curry and MS2 progressing as the year goes on, by mid season, we could end up having more OLB depth than we had last year

Reporter: so, can you tell us who is the nickel for Atlanta?
Chip: No. Who would that benefit?
    A different reporter: Atlanta.
    Chip: Exactly.

  222. 222 Media Mike said at 1:49 PM on September 5th, 2015:

Fun presser. Shame 5 people had to ask about the 3rd QB roster spot after it was explained properly by Chip once.

It took time away from being able to ask why they cut Mostert.

  223. 223 GEAGLE said at 1:53 PM on September 5th, 2015:

That’s what always happens man…half the questions are questions that anyone with a brain should know they have no chance of getting answered by Chip… We waste at least half our media access on crap with no chance of being answered…its absurd

  224. 224 OregonDucker said at 1:55 PM on September 5th, 2015:

    Media showboating.

  225. 225 Iskar36 said at 1:54 PM on September 5th, 2015:

Sounded like it was one reporter asking multiple times. I recognize the voice but can’t put the name to the voice. Was a terrible line of questions from that one reporter.

  226. 226 A_T_G said at 1:57 PM on September 5th, 2015:

After the emergency QB question, the same reporter tried to tie that answer to the 3rd QB as well.

  227. 227 Media Mike said at 1:58 PM on September 5th, 2015:

    Annoying as hell.

  228. 228 GEAGLE said at 1:52 PM on September 5th, 2015:

lol after an entire summer of the #3 QB battle, both knuckleheads are gone..LOVE IT!!!
    ..
Tim Tebow turned out to be a “camp arm” replacement for GJ Kinney after all… Offseason would have been so much more enjoyable if reporters accepted Tebow for the camp arm he is instead of all the absurd noise about a battle between two scrubs…. At least it’s over!!!
    ..
Bring Tebow back next summer for a camp arm for all I care as long as media treats it in the proper context,,
    ..
The one decent thing about having Tebow is he gets attention so our 3rd string players are getting more attention then they normally would because of people wanting to see Tebow… Everyone watched our 3rd stringers play all summer because of Tebow.. At least young player fighting for an NFL career had plenty of eyes on them thanks to the camp arm..

  229. 229 Iskar36 said at 2:00 PM on September 5th, 2015:

The added attention those young 3rd string players got were from fans. NFL scouts and decision makers that would have the potential for affecting their careers were watching regardless of Tebow.

  230. 230 OregonDucker said at 1:57 PM on September 5th, 2015:

Anybody know WHY RICE? Media reporting was that he was up and down in preseason. I wonder what Chip saw as upside?

  231. 231 Media Mike said at 1:59 PM on September 5th, 2015:

Kelly said Rice and Biggers outplayed Watkins.

  232. 232 Media Mike said at 2:00 PM on September 5th, 2015:

    So week one inactives
    – Rice
    – Andrews
    – Bair
    – Smith

    Not sure who else.

  233. 233 OregonDucker said at 2:02 PM on September 5th, 2015:

    Kellen Moore.

  234. 234 Media Mike said at 2:03 PM on September 5th, 2015:

I’m not even joking, but my best friend is a HUGE Kellen Moore fan. He’d do cartwheels if that’s our QB3.

  235. 235 OregonDucker said at 2:04 PM on September 5th, 2015:

The SOB can pick apart a D with his eyes closed. Not a long ball guy but is deadly in the short to mid game.

  236. 236 Greg Richards said at 2:04 PM on September 5th, 2015:

If Barkley doesn’t have enough arm strength, Kellen Moore doesn’t have enough arm strength.

  237. 237 OregonDucker said at 2:05 PM on September 5th, 2015:

He’s not a starter but a good emergency backup. He can execute this offense very well.

  238. 238 Nick C said at 2:02 PM on September 5th, 2015:

Another OL and 3rd QB (if on active)

  239. 239 phillychuck said at 2:09 PM on September 5th, 2015:

    Zach Ertz

  240. 240 GEAGLE said at 2:20 PM on September 5th, 2015:

Not sure…, I could see Taylor Hart starting the season innactive and overthrow Bair later in the season…
    ..
Dunno about not dressing Rice either.. Go into a live game with only 4 CBs? Yes I know Jenkins and Walter can move to CB but we don’t have any safeties in our bench that are ready to play safety in the NFL at the start of the season…
    ..
Can u really afford to go into a game with 4 corners? That would worry me

  241. 241 A_T_G said at 2:02 PM on September 5th, 2015:

Chip was very political and positive about Jalen, but I could see him viewing tackling as one of those non-negotiable points in Kelly’s direct, no nonsense approach: defenders need to be able to tackle. After all, the rest of what they do, how big they are, how fast, how quick to diagnose don’t matter if you can’t tackle. I can’t say I disagree.

  242. 242 Greg Richards said at 2:03 PM on September 5th, 2015:

Exactly what did he say about Jaylen? I didn’t see anyone tweet anything except him saying that you can’t worry about where a player was drafted when making roster decisions.

  243. 243 A_T_G said at 2:08 PM on September 5th, 2015:

    From memory…

He said cutting a fourth rounder from last year isn’t that unusual.
He said once they are here he doesn’t look at how they got here, that only hurts the team.
He said Jalen didn’t do anything wrong, just that Rice and Biggers outplayed him.

  244. 244 GEAGLE said at 2:16 PM on September 5th, 2015:

If like to see chip spend 4th round picks worth investing more then 1 year into their development.. jaylens roster failure, is chips draft failure..

Getting tired of using 4th and 5th round pics like toilet paper..

  245. 245 Birds4Life said at 8:09 PM on September 5th, 2015:

The draft is a crapshoot. Less than half of all 1st rounders make the probowl. An average of 6.5% of 4th round picks make the probowl.

  246. 246 Media Mike said at 2:03 PM on September 5th, 2015:
