He’s gone, again. The Eagles cut Julian Vandervelde on Tuesday. I know sometimes this may just seem like Chip Kelly, Ed Marynowitz and/or Howie Roseman do this for the heck of looking busy, but the moves always do matter.

Vandervelde has value because he knows the system and the coaches trust him. If someone is hurt, they can sign him and feel at least a minimal sense of comfort. The problem is that Vandervelde just isn’t that good. You want backups to do two things. First, they need to be good backups. Second, you want them to push the starters. Vandy can do the first, but not the second. He’s just not a guy you want on the field. There is no upside with him.

The Eagles signed Tanner Hawkinson to take his place. From PE.com.

Originally a fifth-round pick of the Cincinnati Bengals in 2013, Hawkinson was waived in September as part of the final round of cuts as the Bengals trimmed their roster down to 53 players. Just two days after being waived, the 49ers signed him to their practice squad. The McPherson, Kansas native played his college football at the University of Kansas, where he was second-team All-Big 12 as a senior in 2012. Standing at 6-5, 300 pounds, Hawkinson appeared in 4 games for the Bengals during his first two seasons.

Hawkinson, 6-5 300, is a good athlete.

VJ – 28.5

He reminds me of Andrew Gardner. Hawkinson can fire off the ball. Blocks well on the second level. Awkward in pass pro. While athletic, not the most fluid guy. Only a so-so drive blocker. Tends to rely on his hands more than using whole body to generate power.

I think Hawkinson would mostly be an OG for the Eagles. Chip Kelly will refer to him as a G/T, but I would need to see more NFL tape before trusting him at OT.

I have not finished re-watching the Saints game, but Matt Tobin got off to a slow start. I’m not sure this move correlates to that, but the point is that you need backups pushing Tobin to play better. You want marginal startes to feel threatened by the players behind them. Vandy wasn’t doing that. A new guy like Hawkinson might.

One key thing to understand is that Hawkinson is a long term move. He’s not here to challenge for a starting role right away. He does have upside, though, and is worth developing. The Eagles got lucky when they signed Gardner a few years back. It took him a little while, but he developed into an effective starter. Hawkinson probably won’t (just the odds), but it is at least possible with him.

The hard part of this is letting Vandy the person go.

How do you not love this guy?

Any team with locker room issues would be smart to sign him. Vandervelde might be a limited player, but he’s the kind of person you want on your team. When he does finally retire, the Eagles have some type of moral obligation to offer him a job. Heck, just have him cut players. He ought to be an expert at that.

Many of you have asked about me and Jimmy Bama doing more podcasts. I’ll talk to him. We stopped due to a combination of scheduling conflicts and technical issues.

Did you see the movie Marathon Man? There is a great scene where a guy helps Dustin Hoffman escape from his captors. Hoffman thinks the guy is his friend. The guy puts Hoffman in a car and drives away from the holding spot. Hoffman is keeping his head down in the car and answering questions from the guy as they drive around. Suddenly the car stops. Hoffman looks up and the car is right back at the original spot. His “friend” didn’t rescue him, but only pretended to. Right back to the captors.

I thought about this scene in regard to Brandon Boykin.

Boykin wanted out of Philadelphia because he wanted a chance to start. The Eagles dealt him and he believed he was saved. Now he’s right back with his captors. Actually, things are even worse than last year.  According to Rotowire, Boykin has played 12 defensive snaps this season.

12!!!!!!

I have no idea what has happened to Boykin. He went from being one of the league’s top slot corners to a guy that can’t get on the field at all. From everything I know and have heard, Boykin is a high character guy. Maybe something has changed.

He is in a contract year. That can sometimes bring out the worst in a player. He is pressing, trying to do big things to earn a big deal. That can lead to bad days in practice and bad games. You also wonder if it made a guy like Boykin pushy when dealing with coaches and/or teammates.

The other possibility is that Boykin wasn’t as good as they hoped outside and the Steelers had other plans for the slot already.

Obviously this isn’t anyone having it out for Boykin. There is no reason the Steelers would deal for him and then sit him. Something turned out differently than they anticipated. I was hoping Boykin would work out for them. He seems like a good guy so I wanted him to succeed. I also wanted the Eagles to get a 4th round pick for him. That won’t be happening. It will be a 5th.

Couple of good nuggets from the coordinator PCs today.

Bill Davis talked about how 3rd down will be a key point in practice this week. He said you don’t want to overreact to one game, but the Eagles struggled on 3rd downs the last 2 weeks. That means this is a problem that must be addressed.

Pat Shurmur had a great line.

Very true.

I believe the statement was of the ironic humor variety. Ray is making light of the situation in which Boykin is now playing less for a coach of the same race as Boykin after brief reports of comments indicating that Boykin may have believed his lack of opportunity in Philly was related to the coach being of a different culture, used in that case as a euphemism for race. Ray is now stating an obviously impossible conclusion to highlight the apparent incongruity between the original implication and the facts that have unfolded since. In doing so, he is taking a position that he disagrees with the original hypothesis, but doing it in a way that is neither preachy nor rehashing old discussions. He also did all of that in a single sentence, and one that made me smile. In conclusion, Ray’s statement was ironic, apt, efficient, and witty. Jokes are always more fun when they need to be explained.

No, unfortunately nothing that substantial. They suspended the side judge who screwed up the clock on MNF. First I have ever heard of such culpulbility though.

I really feel like the officiating is as bad as it has ever been, including replacement level officiating. Obvious missed calls nearly every play, which isn’t nearly as bad as the tons of phantom calls. It’s probably just me but I am fine with “letting guys play”, it’s when the officials take the outcome of he game into their hands that is the main problem.

The philosophy right now seems to be that “when in doubt throw it out”. Ot might not be the officials. It could be the NFL. They have made the rule book so convoluted that these doctors and attorneys don’t understand it. Allowing common sense to guide the officials doesn’t seem to be the way of the Rodger Goddell NFL.

However it gets fixed I don’t care. Officiating is really interfering with my ability to enjoy the NFL.

It stars a midwestern offensive lineman trying to convince the turk that he is not the droid he is looking for. In his efforts he tries to convince the turk that he is Batman. When that fails he tries to convince the turk that his golden voice makes him a modern 300lbs bearded version of the syrens. In the end he realizes he may never reach his dreams and goes all Captain Phillips, informing the turk that he is the one being cut and Vandervelde lets out a beastial scream proclaiming “I AM THE TURK NOWWWWWWWWW!” He then becomes an urban legend emerging from Bo Wulf’s old office in the NovaCare every August to get naughty camp players who don’t drink all their smoothies.

    ..
I’d guess that chip kelly is going to show the uneducated moronic Philly Media why he didn’t draft their beloved Landon Collins.. Strong run defender, but a liability in coverage that I assume chip will try to Isolate and exploit… IF Bradfird sees that we have Landon Collins in man coverage matched up against Ertz or Sproles in the slot, he has gotta Attack that…. Spagnuolo is either going to have to play a lot of zone, or he is gpmg to have to double team Sproles because the Giants dont really have any quick uber athletic LB that they can ask to run with Sprolsey so they might have to ask Landon Collins to try and match up with sproles… Hopefully Monday is “Wheel Route CITY”, lol just make sure Eagles RB are the ones inflicting the damage with wheel routes and NOT Shane Vereen…
    ..,
There are no easy division games, so I try to respect all our opponents, but when I look at the Giants Personel on Defense, two things Immediately Jump out at me
    1) lack of Cover ability in their LBs and Safeties
    2) what has to be one of the 5 worst pass rushing DLs in the game
    ..
The Giamts better hope they can stop our run game, or our play action will slaughter their LBs and S’s all night, and with Amakamura out, their should be some chances to go after a backüp CB down field… chip said that the Giants are going to attack us with BOMBS all night, so it like to see us also try to take our shots… I want to see what Josh Huff looks like going deep.
    ..
The Giants have a top 2 ranked run defense….. I’m sorry, but I don’t buy that AT ALL, but since the majority of that defense weakness is pass coverage, obviously they have some good run defendwrs, Jonathon Hankins is a big boy in the middle of the D, the linebackers cant cover but they can play the run. Landon Collins can play the run.. Our passing opportunities will be there, but I really hope to see our Offensive line to build on their play from the saints game and rise to the challenge of taking on what is being rated as a top run defense, step up and run the ball down their throat
    ..
Their pass defense is suspect, we will take shots Nd have success via the air, but if we can manage to steo up and run the ball, attacking the strength of their defense, THATS how you really demoralize their defense and then rip their heart out… They have some Big heavy run defenders, run the ball in the first half and Those big boys will get worn down…
    ..
This is a MUST WIN GAME!! We can not afford to lose any more division games, especially if it’s going to be a closely contested Divisipn because we will lose all the tiebreakers…you HAVE to win this game at HOME! MUST WIN!!
    ..
The problem is we friggin completely kicked their ass and Embarressed them last year shifting them out in philly, so you can bet they are going to show up fired up looking for revenge… The Panthers are also going to be fired up looking for revenge for what we did to them last year… So it’s EXTREMELY IMPORTANT that .hip and our Leaders has us REaDY TO PLAY and Match their intensity these next two weeks..

Not a big deal, Id bet that watching Game film of the saints game will open his eyes, and lead to him correcting his mistakes and having a breakout game under the bright lights of Monday night football… physically. murray is fine… But the saints game film will show him the difference between Murray being too patient, looking for the perfect hole which caused him to leave a “ton of meat on the bone” and he will see what it looks like when Ryan Mathews runs decisive, trusts the OL to open the holes that the play is designed to create…. I really expect game film of the Saints game to get Murrays season turned around..
    ..
Murray didn’t maximize the success our OL was having against the saints, but it’s really simple, correctable trust issues, just common part of the gelling process that you have to go thru when you have a team with so many new players.
    ..
I think the talk about which RB is best suited for our Offense, Murray or Mathews is really friggim STUPID, for starters it’s a dumb discussion because we have both and when we start performing the way we are supposed to their will be plenty of touches for both, but even if you Want to have that debate, now is NOT the time, because I guarentee we aren’t yet seeing what Murray will really bring to this offens when he gets comfortable with his line and the offense… Murray has made a lot of really small correctable mistakes that have held him back from showing what he is really capable of….. After we see this team come together, Im sure we will be thrilled to have both RBs..

Vandervelde was a guard center.. my take is he was useful to us as insurance during the first half of this season in case KELCE got hurt… But now that we are about a month and a half into the season, I assume we have gotten Josh Andrews up to speed enough to be Kelce’s,primary backup, so there is really no use for Vandervelde…. But God forbid Kelce or Andrews gets injured, you know Julian is on speed dail… But Julian is a good dude, and a real pro so I hope he lands on his feet and there is someone out there who will hopefully value him as a backup and give him some job stability…. Hopefully Andy Reid of the colts continue to give jobs to our castoffs

I love how when everyone talks about this Giant team, I keep hearing how a big part of Eli’s great play right now is the fact that he is much more comfortable now that he is in his second year playing in this offense.. I hear it from all the analysts, I hear it from chip and the Coaches, I hear it from the players, I hear it from our fans…. And not for nothing, but it’s pretty friggin true.
    ..
Yet when it comes to Bradford, we watch his first 4 games in a new offense that he has only been cleared to practice in since August first, playing with 10 new teammates, throwing to brand new WRs, TEs, and on top of all that, the guys HASNT played in two friggin years…. Yet, we can watch Bradfords first 4 games, and Comclude that he isn’t good enough and that we will have to find a new QB next year lol… 4 games, and we think we know what the kid is capable of…

Go watch the way Eli has played QB these past few weeks, and then randomly choose any of the Giants games from the beginning of last season when they were playing with 27 new players, and watch how DRASTICALLY different eli looks….
    .,
Even if se see Bradtord light the league on Fire these next 3 weeks, it’s still reasonable and rational to expect that Bradford can reach new heights as he grows in this offense, gets comfortable and it becomes second nature for him

All I keep hearing about is being in year two of this offsense is one of the main components of Eli looking so good this year… Well if we are smart enough to recognize that, we should be smart enough to not overreact to what we see in September of year 1… My expiation is that Bradfird we see durng the second half of the season will be significantly better than what we saw in September, and then I expect that what We see Next year, will be even better than the I provementa we see durimg the second half of this season
    ,,
A 1-3 start is terrible, it’s no fun and it’s hard on us all… But can we be upset and go thru adversity while still supporting our players and understand that we are just seeing the “starting point” of what is a brand new Eagle offense and even tho being patient friggin sucks especially for a fanbase that has never won a Super Bowl, there is no way around the gelling, Growth process… We can get a brand new QB, and 10 better offensive players, but they will need time to gel too….. It’s a process that you have to go thru when you decide to make changes across the board of a unit..
    ..
Eli playing better because he is in his second year in this Offense is a VERY REAL Dynamic.. We can’t expect it to not apply to Bradford

  73. 73 botto said at 1:46 PM on October 15th, 2015:

it’s true and you would really expect Eli to have a shorter leash and it should take him even less time then Bradford considering he is a veteran.
Sammy will be getting hot moving forward, no worries

Yes sir…. His play DOESNT concern me, this is just a Starting point that we have seen.
    .
my Concern is that we NEED TO KEEP HIM HEALTHY! NOTHING could be BETTER if for this franchise, that if SAM puts his bad luck behind him, plays every single game this season, enjoys an entire healthy offseason and string together a few year stretch of staying healthy… His talent level is so friggin Legit, if his injuries are behind him, he is the man to lead us to a new golden age of Eagle football..
    ..
I still hold this years team to the standard of reaching the playoffs and hopefully making some noise.. Even tho it’s YEAR 1 for this team, the NFC is just so wide open that I can’t just waive the white flag and view this as a complete rebuilding year because I still view this as one of the most Talemted rosters.. But after this year, we should see we should see the Best Chip Kelly Eagle team we have seen up to now.. I look at it as this will be the year we grow into a top defense, and the next two years will be years 4 and 5 of the defense and at that time it’s GREATNESS OR BUST… Year 4 it’s only fair that we hold billy and the defense to the standards of TOP DEFENSE or BUST… Especially since we have been building this defense correctly, it’s not like we decided to rebuild in year 3 lke we did with the offense…
    ..
So next year we will be in YEAR 4 Of this defense, expecting GREATNESS and football gods willing, SAM will be in year 2’of this offense, with at least 20 healthy games under his belt, and I assume he wiill have extra added OL talent that we will add this up coming offseason..
    ..
Just put together a few years Of good health, and we will have a Really good eagle team to root for.,, I believe continuity is the only thing holding SAM back from greatness

Is it just me, or has Walter thurmond made more BIGTIME plays in 5 games than Nate made for us in 5 years?
    ..
“Baby Simba” Hicks probably has made more Big plays in the first 5 weeks of his rookie season than Casey Mathews has made in his eagle career.. Sadly these migjt not even be exaggerations
    ..
But back to Thurmond, I enjoyed hearing chip give his thoughts about Walter… He was asked about what he has seen from thurmond so far, and chip responded something like: “Honestly he has looked just like the walt I have always seen. My first year as Oregon coach was Walts Senior year and he was our Team Captain. I remember that spring trying to install my offense was so hard because Walt was so good flying all around the field every day in Practice and that he honestly thought Thurmond was going to be a first round pick until he suffered the Terrible injury but he always thought thurmond was capable of what we are seeing but that he has been snake bitten. He never had any setbacks with the bad knee injury he had as a senior, but it’s always one injury after another, a pectoral, a hip that has held Thurmond back from being the great players h is capable of being…

Walt has been a Godsend, so much fun watching him and Jenkins… I wish they would have the game tape clips of each individual player like they have for draft picks. Basically a edited tape of each eagle game that only shows Thurmond on each play, and the same thing for Jenkins. It would be great to see cut ups of individual players entire games… Cox, Logan, Thurmond, Jenkins they would be a lot of fun watching their entire games… jason Peters im sure would be a lot of fun too.
    ..
Shame Ahgolar got hurt, because I heard that early in the saints game he was really destroying saints corners at the line of scrimage and flying by them..

Thurmond has played so well, his ipast injury luck is nerve wrecking.. We Finally FOUND ELITE SAFETY PLAY, hopefully he is done getting injured and all the bad luck is behind him … Silver Linning, it’s not a situation like SAM where he keeps injuring the same exact body part, it’s been random injuries at all different areas of his body that he has recovered from, hopefully he can enjoy a few years of Great health..
    ..
For example, must suck for COUGHLIN and Eli to play against Walt and see how he is tearing the league when they had him last year, they knew how talented he is yet the injuries kept him off the field….. Hulls and the Sports Sciemce department need to perform as the MVPs of this franchise

Wonder who will line up on JMatt this game. Trumaine Mcbride is the everyday slot but he was injured last week and i have no idea if he is playing this week. With the lack of speed and coverage abilities in the middle of the field from the G-men I am expecting a coming out party for JMatt, although i am getting sick of waiting. I don’t think he will ever be a top 10 receiver in the game, but he is able produce much more than he has so far. It’s been a combination of things, mostly him trying to make a play before he ever catches the ball first. Yeah he had some drop issues in College, but not like this, he’s much better than this. I went to several training camp practices and just marveled at his work there, he looked like someone ready to bust out with huge numbers. He caught everything and never stopped running. He had some opportunities last week but Sam went elsewhere with the ball. Here’s hoping they hook up a lot this week because i think the Eagles have a huge advantage with his size and speed in the middle of the field

    ,,
Eagles won 10 of the last 13 Gianta games,
    ..
Main matchups I like when facing the Giants and Panthers, is that both OL’s have weak links for our stacked DL rotation to exploit.. Our DL THATS finally Getting the respect it deserves has two PRIME TIME opportunities(night games) against Offensive lines that they can exploit so I would assume young studs on the verge of stardom like Cox, and Bennie are going to be really jacked up to take over these next two games on prime time with the Nation watching. Great opportunity on the big stage for this front 7 and Eagles defense to make a statement and show how much Talemt we have on defense
    .,
jordan Mathews is going to be tough for the Giants to match up with
    ..
The Safties and LBs are all better run defenders who DONT have quality coverage ability… How are they going to match up with Ertz and Sproles? They would abuse Landon Collins
    ..
And if they aren’t overmatched enough in coverage, they have one of the worst pass rushing DLs in the league.. Spagnuolo has no choice but to bust out his notes from the jim Johnson days and try to blitz us all night. Hopefully SAM and KELCE can diagnose the blitzes and SAM can make them pay for blitzing us…
    .
Curious to see who DRC is matched up against the most, and whp the backüp matches up against. I can’t think of his name but they say he held up ok when he had to fill in for DRC this year

  151. 151 The original AG said at 9:36 PM on October 15th, 2015:

They are getting abused. I don’t understand how Ryan still has a job. If Payton isn’t careful, he might get himself fired keeping him around. But then again, the offense is all over the place.

  152. 152 JoeBlow said at 9:38 PM on October 15th, 2015:

Sean Payton already said this week that he will take inquiries from other teams later this season…..not a good to be telling your employer in week 6

  153. 153 The original AG said at 9:39 PM on October 15th, 2015:

Whoa, didn’t read/see/hear that. Yeah that’s really bad, no wonder this team is a mess.

  154. 154 JoeBlow said at 9:47 PM on October 15th, 2015:

He has two years left on his deal, but i think the Saints ownership wants him out. Things haven’t been great lately and i don’t think he has been on board with GM Mickey Loomis giving out giant contracts on one hand and then dealing other players away with the other just so they can stay under the cap. Also when Junior Gallette when on his twitter rant after being cut, he said some pretty unflattering things about Payton….(cheats on his wife, addicted to painkillers) which some people think is true. Those things have nothing to do with football really, but some think the Saints want to get rid of him before this stuff turns public

  155. 155 RC5000 said at 10:01 PM on October 15th, 2015:

Maybe Payton can get a package deal with Redskins GM and Sarkisian as assistant. Football seems like it’s out of control but I guess it’s been that way going way back.

  156. 156 Will:↑↑↓↓←→←→BA said at 9:46 PM on October 15th, 2015:

Teams want him… been talks of trades

OMG, the Falcons want the Saints to win this game.

Kid from Kentucky Josh Forrest has caught my eye. 6′ 3″ 260, plays inside linebacker in Mike Stoops 4-2-5. Wide Receiver turned linebacker, 4.7 40yd dash, very long arms. Projected to be a day 3 pick, and he’s more of an athletic edge player than a thumper in middle, 3rd in SEC in tackles, maybe a late round pick with tons of potential if he can figure it out

  160. 160 Media Mike said at 4:56 AM on October 16th, 2015:

The way our ILB corps keeps laying down on the job means that we might need that kid.

Saints ran exact same play against us, such a tough route to cover, especially with a speedster like Cooks

  164. 164 Jernst said at 11:54 PM on October 15th, 2015:

So the Saints just beat an undefeated team. Hopefully, we can all lay the whole, “last weeks win doesn’t count because the Saints are horrible” thing. Every win in the NFL is hard to come by.

  165. 165 anon said at 11:56 PM on October 15th, 2015:

agree. Division game, plus my theory is that teams that get whalloped one week often come out and get the W the next, vice versa for teams w/ an easy win.
