Panther Talk

I heard someone in the national media talk about how this game is going to be a referendum for the Eagles. They might now be 3-3, but haven’t really beaten anyone so this is their chance to prove they are for real.

This is the kind of dumb analysis I hate.

The Panthers are 5-0, but they have played the weaker schedule. The Eagles have been tested by good teams almost every week. Dallas might be 2-4 now, but the Eagles played them when they had Tony Romo and looked good. I agree the Eagles need to prove they can keep winning, but I don’t buy the “Eagles are finally facing a good team” angle.

I do think the Panthers are a good team. Cam Newton is healthy and is playing much better than last year. Their O-line is worlds better. Luke Kuechly and Thomas Davis are impact LBs. This will be a good test for the Eagles.

But the flip side is just as true. The Eagles will be a good test for the Panthers. The Eagles have won 3 of 4 games and look like a hot team. They have had at least 20-point leads in 3 of the 4 games and have had 4th quarter leads in all the games. The defense is playing better than they have in years and the offense has woken up. If Carolina wins, they will earn it.

One of the keys to the Eagles hot streak is winning the line of scrimmage. The Eagles DL might be the best in the league. The O-line seems to get better each week. Jason Peters is coming off the best of the season and when he’s at his best, the whole line is that much better.

I think this is another game where the Eagles can win the LOS. If they do, they have a great chance to hand the Panthers their first loss.

Carolina wants to run the ball. They lead the NFL in rush attempts. Newton only throws the ball 31 times a game. The Eagles have a very good run defense. They can play a lot of base defense and load the box. I’m more comfortable with that than when teams spread the Eagles out and throw the ball. I would rather see the base defense than Chris Maragos and E.J. Biggers, no offense to those guys.

Cedric Thornton has played the last two weeks, but hasn’t been himself. In previous years, he was an outstanding run defender. He could 2-gap as well as any of the DL and made his share of plays behind the line. Thornton wasn’t a pass rusher, but he made a difference in the run game. This year Thornton has been okay on run defense, but hasn’t stood out.

Thornton had a broken bone in his hand. It can be tough to 2-gap with a banged up hand. Hopefully every week the hand will improve a little and Thornton will get better overall. If he can start to click, this DL could be scary good (for a 3-4 bunch).

Sunday night will be a challenge for the fellas up front. Something tells me they’ll be ready to go and will give Cris Collinsworth plenty of good things to talk about.

ILB

DeMeco Ryans was dealing with a hamstring injury this week, but I would be shocked if he didn’t play. Mychal Kendricks told folks in Charlotte he would be on the field on Sunday night.

We know Jordan Hicks will be out there. He’s been the best ILB this year and will have a chance to make a lot of plays vs the Panthers. Ryans and Kendricks should both play. Kendricks gives the Eagles an athletic player to add to the middle of the field. Ryans is a terrific inside run defender. You want him out there in a game like this.

No idea when Kiko Alonso will return to the field. After the bye, maybe?

The emergence of Hicks has really made ILB a good position even with all the injuries.

Taking the homer element out of things; I kind of like Hoyer today.

Miami is a badly flawed football team. They’re walking around all kinds of swole because they slapped around a really bad Titans team……..but they’re still not good. The new coach effect only lasts so long.

I know Houston has been hot trash, but I don’t have the type of respect for their D that I do for Ron Rivera’s in Carolina or Arizona’s.

Also, Foles should have rather limted passing attempts today; it’s Gurley’s day for a 200 yard 3TD outburst.

  15. 15 The original AG said at 8:44 AM on October 25th, 2015:

I agree with this. Maybe Foles, but he’s too inconsistent.
Bradford – we don’t know if he’s going to keep throwing bad INTs
Foles – Are you getting TO Foles or look- like-Montana Foles?
Flacco – That offense is struggling and AZ does have a good D
Hoyer – Seems like the safest bet

  27. 27 JoeBlow said at 12:57 AM on October 25th, 2015:

I’m a pretty optimistic guy, but i try to be even keeled when looking at an Eagles game. I felt pretty good about our chances the past 2 weeks, but that was mainly due to the opponents. I feel the same way now as i did at the start of the season. I believe this is a pretty talented team that should win the division. Back in the summer i felt this team would open 0-2 then go on an 11-3 run to close out the season, then preseason happened and i got overly excited. I never thought they would have looked as atrocious as they did the first several games. Truth be told, they still don’t look “right”, at least the offense doesn’t, and a Carolina defense isn’t exactly the remedy for an offense finding it’s footing. Where i do like our chances this game is our D vs Carolina’s O.

I will most likely never be a true believer in Cam Newton as a QB. I think the physical traits will always be there, but his decision making and consistent accuracy will always be a problem (sounds like possibly the same with our current QB). Cam has lead his team to a 5-0 record and i give him credit, but the same issues are still there, granted he doesn’t have a whole lot to work with. Even in his big win last week in Seattle he threw a lot of wild passes. I think our secondary is more than capable of making him pay for forcing his throws, and i like our personnel to match-up with Greg Olson. I also like our Match-up on the edge against their tackles. RT Mike Remmers was pushed back all game in SEA, and the other guy on the left side is Michael Oher, not great stuff. The interior of their o-line is pretty solid, but our interior D-line is better and really playing well. As for our offense, I’ve said it twice this week and ill say it again, I really hope we see a lot of 2-TE sets, it will disguise our run tendencies and get our backs going downhill from the start of the handoff. I also think this opens up big plays over the top through play-action.

Wild prediction- Eagles win 23-19, Game is sealed on a (quietly solid so far) EJ Biggers interception

  28. 28 Nelson ALGore said at 2:20 AM on October 25th, 2015:

I guess the Jets aren’t that good for a 4-1 team that we gave them their only loss.

after we beat the Panthers (sloppily Probably) they will say yea but the eagles haven’t beaten Cincy or New England….whatever

  29. 29 xmbk said at 8:39 AM on October 25th, 2015:

Don’t really care what “they” are saying. The Eagles looked terrible to start the year, and still have a couple of areas of real concern. Opponents and record don’t really factor into that. It would be very reassuring to see something from Bradford over the next couple of games.

  30. 30 Media Mike said at 8:42 AM on October 25th, 2015:

That’s 100% where things sit. If Bradford keeps playing up and down; we’re an 8-8 team.

If Bradford stops the weekly foul-ups; we can get to 10 or 11 wins.

  31. 31 xmbk said at 10:26 AM on October 25th, 2015:

Weak schedule makes the record hard to predict. My main concern with Bradford is that he has no shown the mental toughness it takes to win in the playoffs.

  33. 33 xmbk said at 12:01 PM on October 25th, 2015:

Spurs are another team that win “the right way”, imho. So sad when they lost to the mercenaries, but they made all right the next year when they broke up a team that had no character.

  34. 34 Nelson ALGore said at 5:39 PM on October 25th, 2015:

Thats my point if Bradford starts playing average we dominate.

  35. 35 D3FB said at 6:28 AM on October 25th, 2015:

Two matchups I’m going to be focusing on:

Jordan Hicks in a crowded box. He’s at his best in space, and while he’s been solid in tight spaces, it’s by far the area he needs to grow most in. Can he make the neccessary reads vs. the inverted wishbone, and can he stack and shed consistently.

The other big matchup will be Logan against Trai Turner and Ryan Kalil, their two best OL. Turner is ridiculously strong. I mean straight up dumb levels of strength. He did the following to JJ Watt:

  36. 36 Media Mike said at 8:05 AM on October 25th, 2015:

    I’ll start charting.

  39. 39 A_T_G said at 10:10 AM on October 25th, 2015:

I have found that “son of a” is a surprisingly versatile formation. It sets up the expectation for the traditional finish, but you can catch people off guard by going another direction. Something as simple as “son of a mother” is obvious, easy, but creates that unexpectedness that will open up the big curse when Bradford deserves it.

  40. 40 xmbk said at 8:46 AM on October 25th, 2015:

He is strong, and a foundation of their run game. That clip was more about balance, though. He stood up to the bull rush, strength. But the most impressive of all Watts impressive atttributes is his athleticism. He tried to go to a swim, but Turner recovered quicker than him, and catching anyone mid swim is a likely pancake.

I do look forward to this matchup. Heck, pretty much all season I’ve been looking forward to watching the DL, it’s always fun to watch your team win the LoS.

  45. 45 Media Mike said at 7:53 AM on October 25th, 2015:

Newton is currently 22nd in QB rating (Kaep’s “efforts” on Thursday night slid him down to the 23rd slot).

    He was 26th in 2014, 16th in 2013, 15th in 2012, and 15th in 2011.

That is 100% NOT a player who has abilities as good as his reputation.

  46. 46 xmbk said at 8:31 AM on October 25th, 2015:

  49. 49 Media Mike said at 8:08 AM on October 25th, 2015:

I’m usually not one to buy into the non X and O stuff, but the way Carolina took a victory lap this week (especially Cam’s scold of the reporters for making predictions) after beating Seattle seems like they’re setting themselves up for a letdown week.

If we win, I know there will be a ton of “The Eagles are back” type stuff from the press, but we’ll have a bye week to focus on getting double revenge on Dallas, so I wouldn’t worry about motivation in that game.

I’d be more worried about letdown city if we’re hosting Miami at 5-3.

  50. 50 Corry said at 8:11 AM on October 25th, 2015:

I think our defense matches up well against the Panthers, but we really need something from the offense. The Panthers are going to want to bludgeon the defense and if we can’t stay on the field on offense and get off the field on defense, that will add up.

  51. 51 Media Mike said at 8:17 AM on October 25th, 2015:

We’re going to stop the run. We’re going to get takeaways. We’re going to give the ball to our O a ton……………………….can Bradford end the mistakes and can the guy’s “catching” passes end the drops.

If we keep the giveaways at 1, there is no way we lose.

  52. 52 Dragon_Eagle said at 8:32 AM on October 25th, 2015:

  55. 55 BlindChow said at 10:28 AM on October 25th, 2015:

Pardon my laziness in not looking it up from the last post on here, but this is why the NFL needs an 8 team developmental league. Whoever went on that rant yesterday was 100% correct.

  60. 60 The original AG said at 8:52 AM on October 25th, 2015:

Or a couple different ones. 16 teams in Europe, 8 teams in South America, and 8 teams in Asia.

Or do all 32 in Europe and have it like the AHL is for the NHL.

  61. 61 Media Mike said at 8:53 AM on October 25th, 2015:

You could do 8 cities in Europe if you’d like. 60 man rosters. That would give you a developmental pool of 480 players to evaluate and put into the draft each year along with the college guys. Maybe expand the draft to 8 or 9 rounds again as well.

  62. 62 Corry said at 8:55 AM on October 25th, 2015:

I think they should do it here in the states and maybe Canada, like they do for the minors in baseball. NFL-E existed and failed. Here in the states, you could probably make it marginally profitable since football’s popularity only seems to go up.

  63. 63 BlindChow said at 10:13 AM on October 25th, 2015:

I think there would be tremendous pushback by the NCAA. A lot of money there, and an NFL development league would be a direct competitor that could strip colleges of players and profit.

  64. 64 Corry said at 11:05 AM on October 25th, 2015:

That’s a good possibility that the NCAA wouldn’t be happy, but in my mind there wouldn’t be college eligible players there. Mostly for guys who are out of college/ineligible but not yet good enough for a practice squad spot. I’m not talking 32 teams either. Probably 8 to 16 giving guys a chance to develop at least a little bit and improve their skills in organized football.

Basically it’d be NFL-E just not in Europe. The only difference is that the immense popularity here in the states could keep it afloat, whereas in Europe, it wasn’t profitable at all.

  65. 65 BlindChow said at 11:26 AM on October 25th, 2015:

Sounds like the quality of players would be pretty low then… Not sure how popular a league full of UDFA’s would be. Isn’t that kind of what the arena leagues are?

  67. 67 BlindChow said at 11:54 AM on October 25th, 2015:

Just curious, can CFL players break their contracts if the NFL comes calling? Or is that something a player would have to have written into his contract?

It seems like there aren’t that many players who make the CFL-to-NFL switch (and only one or two like Cameron Wake who has made a name for themselves). Either they aren’t that good, or there are contractual complications…

  68. 68 anon said at 12:12 PM on October 25th, 2015:

  69. 69 Corry said at 11:39 AM on October 25th, 2015:

Well, like I said, NFL-E here in the states haha.

You could look at the arena leagues like that, but I’m thinking more of minor league baseball. Rules are pretty much identical, but the players aren’t as polished.

It would largely be a sorry product, but I’m thinking more of a development type thing. Rasheed Bailey is a good example of player who probably has the physical talents, but needed to refine his game while playing in an organized game.

I mean, if more teams were above .500, by definition you’d have the same amount below .500. Are you saying having more teams below .500 would be an indicator that the quality of play was higher?

  92. 92 GEAGLE said at 9:41 AM on October 25th, 2015:

Two quality front 7’s going at it tonight.. Both very stout against the run, but I doubt Carolina has the pass rushing that we bring to the table.. If we can get pressure without blitzing it allows us to double team Olsen…
And if you shut down Olsen, and don’t allow Panthers to run the ball, they don’t have enough weapons on offense to overcome us taking Olsens and their run game out of the equation..
    ..
On the flip side, Panthers are tough against the run, we need our OL
To have its best game in run blocking.. Last time we faced such a tough DL, we were able to run the ball down the Jets throat…
    ..
Stop the run, while getting our run game going would give us a tremendous advantage in this game… I’ll take our run defense against any team in the league and I like our chances
    ..
I’m expecting our defense to put on a show, but we need our offense to at least clean up the mistakes.. We don’t need Sam to throw for 500yards, we NEED him to take care of the rock, and take advantage of opportunities to burn the panthers defense when they present themselves..
    ..
No team relies on running the ball more than the Panthers, take that security blanked away from them by shutting down the run, make them play for behind and playing from behind should force Cam to press and and hopefully turn the ball over..
    ..
cam Holds the ball and looks for big plays down field which gives us time to get to him and batter him..
    ..

  93. 93 Will:↑↑↓↓←→←→BA said at 9:55 AM on October 25th, 2015:

Cam is going give us the ball twice tonight. Fumble and pick.

How many times will Bradford give the Panthers the ball?

  94. 94 GEAGLE said at 10:05 AM on October 25th, 2015:

If our secondary has been getting coverage sacks the past two weeks against saints and Giants who have better Wrs than the saints and Eli and Brees
Get the ball out faster than Cam, our DBs should get Cam to hold the ball long enough for Cox and the boys to Batter him
    ..
Like our defense to put on a show tonight, but our offense will decide how hard this game will be… if we can run against Carolina, we won’t lose this game.. If we struggle to get the run going, this can become a gritty defensive battle.. But hopefully our OL is up to the challenge just like they stepped up to run the ball on top ranked jets defense home turf… And our offense is much better than the offense who was able to run against the jets, although Carolima run defense is probably better than the Jets where as Carolinas pass defense isn’t on the Jets level..
    ..
Bradford, Sproles and Pope Jordan could have a big night in the passing game.. Hopefully playing an undefeated team on the road brings out our competitive juices and we finally see the offense put together a strong game
    ..
Yes the Panthers shut down Marshawn Lynch, but seattles OL is a mess, our line has been playing much better than seattles
    ..
as for Thornton, I don’t know if he hasn’t been as good as last year, or if it’s a case of Logan and Cox improving so much that they are starting to cast a shadow on on Thorntons game with Cox being on pace right now for a 15 sack season (yes I know that won’t happen) and Logan becoming one of The best NT Forces in the game..
    ..
And if Thornton hasn’t played great, scary to think what the DL can be when he starts playing to the level we have become accustomed to seeing from Ced

So I have a question that’s off topic, and I mean to ask this without seeming ignorant, but can someone explain to me why teams insist on leaving in starters who are clearly not 100%? I’m watching the Jets Pats right now and it’s obvious that Chris Ivory has no power in his legs but they’re leaving him in the game. Zac Stacy is a capable and talented backup, yet is barely touching the ball.

Is there any reason beyond massive brain trauma that you would not sub out Stacy for Ivory? Is there some unwritten rule of football where you need to stick with your starter until his arm is only attached by sinew and his legs and facing the wrong way?

Another good example, when we played the Saints and Marques Colston could barely raise his arm, yet they didn’t just keep him in the game, but they kept trying to throw to him for some reason.

I get it if the drop off between starter and backup is catastrophic, but otherwise I’m not seeing any possible alternate reason besides potential cranial drill intrusion.

Yeah, that and the lack of pass rushers couldn’t take advantage of the makeshift OL. NE starting all kinds of backups today but can’t generate pressure. NE passing to milk the clock to the end the game says it all really.

There wouldn’t have been enough time. Or *shouldn’t* have been… clock was at 12 seconds before the play started and somehow ended up at 11 after the fumble recovery. The refs lowered that to 5 seconds and that was probably generous. I don’t think the team could have gotten to the line and spiked it within 5-6 seconds.
