Chip Kelly’s Non-Update

Posted: November 3rd, 2015 | Author: | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 144 Comments »

Chip Kelly had his first press conference in about a week and he was about as informative as I would be if asked to speak about great Bulgarians not named Nina Dobrev.

Coaches can’t spill the beans at a PC. They’d be giving other teams all kinds of info and losing a competitive advantage. But Chip seemed hesitant to say anything today. He didn’t seem like a happy guy. Maybe he was sad because the Eagles failed to pull off a deal for Aaron Rodgers or J.J. Watt. Or maybe Chip was sad because he knew a PC meant he would have to see Jimmy Bama, something that can get the best of just about anyone.

So let’s talk about what we did learn.

  • The team is fairly healthy. Everyone practiced except Jason Peters, who they hope is back in a day or two.
  • Self-scouting helped. We have no idea what the coaches learned, though. Oh, except drops were a huge issue.
  • Sam Bradford has a pulse. Chip said Sam was doing a nice job. He then threw in “good” as a follow-up.
  • There isn’t a definitive plan on how to use the ILBs. They will talk about this week, but won’t have a final plan until Saturday.
  • Matt Cassel has good mobility.

I’m certainly smarter now. You?

Normally I enjoy watching Chip’s PCs. He is a smart coach with some interesting philosophical ideas. He will talk about some issues with passion, while deftly moving away from those he wants to avoid. There wasn’t anything interesting or informative today.

The closest thing to an interesting comment is when Chip said he didn’t like the bye week because he thinks it breaks up the rhythm of the season.

Of course if the Eagles play better this week and beat Dallas, I will call for Chip to do all his PCs in such an awkward, uninformative manner.

*****

Smart.

There weren’t any realistic moves that the Eagles could pull off that would really help the team. More than outside help, this group needs to play better.

All the Kaepernick talk was just silly. He is very talented, but struggling right now. He could be an interesting offseason target if cut, but isn’t a player that would come here and jump start this team. He’s a mess right now. That’s the last thing the Eagles need more of.

I think our ” Rhythm” needed to be broken up this year. Might be just the thing to help cure this teams issues

That’s what Malcolm Jenkins said “we lost the last game so maybe we needed that rhythm broken up”

All the players disagreed with Chip and talked about how they felt the bye week was needed

  3. 3 Nelson ALGore said at 7:11 PM on November 4th, 2015:

I think us fans needed it too! I wish the Redskins were playing last week so they could have lost too!

Some great zings in this article, Tommy. Thanks for keeping your good sense of humor intact.

I would assume Chip is frustrated as any coach would be by this team’s performance so far, not surprised to hear he did not seem happy. Hopefully, the self scouting can get things turned around.

    Fuck Dallas!

  10. 10 GEAGLE said at 9:35 AM on November 4th, 2015:

There really is no “rest of the season” if we lose to Dallas… This crap division looks like it will be closely contested down to the very end, and falling to 1-3 in our division almost ensures that we will lose the tiebreakers… Not ONLY do we DESPERATELY NEED this win, but it also is a chance to rip out the hearts of our most hated rivals and put them in position where they have to go like 7-1 the rest of the year to stand a chance… Not to mention, that locker room is a powder keg that has been having big issues the last two weeks, another loss could be the match that makes the Cowboys Lockeroom go BOOM!

  11. 11 Nelson ALGore said at 7:10 PM on November 4th, 2015:

That would be so awesome, 44-6 ! Eagles are them only team in our division capable of “putting it together”. The D held Eli and Brees to 17 total points (not counting garbage time)

I am glad Chip isn’t saying much. We should all be grouchy at this point. Tommy mentioned that Bradford has one INT every 27 passes this season. Tom Brady has one INT every 289 passes. Dropped passes – Philly 18, NE 14.

  20. 20 Jernst said at 8:41 AM on November 4th, 2015:

The reported drops seem way low. I’ve seen a bunch of sites say we have 25. Which seems much more accurate. Hell, Matthews has 12 by himself. We dropped 8 just last week. I think the actual number is a lot higher than 18.

  21. 21 Corry said at 8:45 AM on November 4th, 2015:

  22. 22 ChoTime said at 9:10 AM on November 4th, 2015:

ESPN stats count 25 as well as a few other respected stat trackers.

  24. 24 GEAGLE said at 9:31 AM on November 4th, 2015:

I counted 9 alone in the Carolina game, and that wasn’t the first time these issues with drops popped up..
    ..
Worse than the number of drops, is the number of drops that would have been 1st downs or TDs… Really hard to sustain drives when our QB is hitting guys in their hands and they are just dropping first downs..

I’m so disappointed we didn’t take a 7th round flier on that kid. I mean, I get it. But to me the cost, a 7th round pick, is like giving up nothing for a lottery ticket that had a 50% chance of hitting the jackpot.

  35. 35 Corry said at 8:53 AM on November 4th, 2015:

There were some things floating around about him not signing and sitting out the year to re-enter the draft if he was anything other than a 1st round pick. I honestly think Collins really did wanted to pick where he was going if he wasn’t going to get 1st round money.

  38. 38 FairOaks said at 6:52 PM on November 4th, 2015:

I think most teams would have seen through that bluff, but also realized it would kinda be a dick move actually drafting him late, since he and his agent clearly knew that getting to UFDA status would be the best chance to recoup the money he lost by not being drafted where he really should have been.

  39. 39 Jernst said at 2:53 PM on November 4th, 2015:

His agent told teams that if he wasn’t drafted in the first 3 rounds that he’d sit out for the year, refuse to sign and re-enter the draft the following year.

  40. 40 Nelson ALGore said at 7:28 PM on November 4th, 2015:

so what would have kept him out of convict city

  41. 41 GEAGLE said at 9:18 AM on November 4th, 2015:

I don’t “get it”….. Absolutely worth taking a 7th round Flier on a kid that didn’t even do anything wrong… If we stop drafting playërs who know someone that was shot, there would be no one to draft…
    ..
The upside was well worth risking a 7th round pick, and if a week later he gets indicted for Murder, so what, cut him and move on.
    ..
I do believe in charecher and like that we stay away from questionable Charechter, but Lael did Nothing wrong, he wasn’t even a suspect, if anything he was willing to cooperate with the investigations. Taking Lael off of draft boards was way out of hand, im sure 70% of our roster has known someone who was killed…. For a team that was rebuilding its OL, Not taking a 7th round flier on a top 15 Talent wasn’t very smart..what a missed opportunity that was… Now, I’m just going to have to hope that Fletcher Cox ragdolls Lael the next 5 years

  42. 42 meteorologist said at 9:30 AM on November 4th, 2015:

  43. 43 GEAGLE said at 9:38 AM on November 4th, 2015:

I would take that more serious than not drafting the kid because someone he knew was killed… Of course I’m not suggesting spending 2nd, 3rd, 4th or 5th round pick on the kid, but I’d be willing to lose a 7th round pick finding out about Collins for ourselves..

  44. 44 GermanEagle said at 10:13 AM on November 4th, 2015:

Just glad we didn’t trade Vinny Curry. I’d rather get to watch and enjoy him and his play for the rest of the year than have an extra 5th round pick that may, but probably won’t work out 2-3 years from now.

  48. 48 GEAGLE said at 9:27 AM on November 4th, 2015:

Because I expect us to be quiet in free agency this year, Id rather not trade away talent.. If we lose talent and plan on being passive in free agency we will get compensatory picks anyway… We also don’t know anything, for a year people ran their silly mouths about how KEndricks and Brandon Graham were “goners”, yet they ended up being extended and now will be Eagles for the foreseeable future… We could get to free agency and find out the offers Currys is getting ARENT out of our price range, just like what happened with B dot Grizzle.
    ..
I’d rather not give up on one of our most important pass rushers than accept some shitty 6th or 5th round pick for him, the Igglesblitz talk about possibly getting a 4th for Currys expiring contract was sheer fanboyism at its finest.

Really good point. When you see a team having fun, things usually go better. Bad plays are shaken off, etc.

  53. 53 GEAGLE said at 9:51 AM on November 4th, 2015:

I love hearing how Ornery Lane and our OL are going into this dallas rematch. Sean Lee talked about how beating our OL is the reason they beat us, which the OL admitted is true, but are still pretty pissed off about Lee running his mouth. I also like hearing Lane talk about what a piece of shit GReg Hardy is and how he doesn’t even deserve to play in this league..
    ..
I prefer our OL Ornery, pissed off, and out for blood…
    ..
Give me great pleasure if our OL can get it together and Murray/Mathews ram the ball down their defenses throat, but it’s no cake walk, Dallas Defense has stepped up, just like ours has stepped up and tried to carry us..
    ..
One thing we better be talking about this week is pre snap Cadence. One of the reason our OL got its teeth kicked in by dallas was because their DL was timing our snap count perfectly..if they are going to be so aggressive trying to get a jump on our OL, we have to be smart enough to use that against them and force them to jump offsides a few times… Catch them offsides twice and watch that pass rush slow down and force them to think, and thinking slows down football players..

We NEED Jason Peters to be dominant as bad as we have ever needed him.. Can’t let Hardy get his filthy scumbag paws on our QB…. Fortunately, JP actually Practiced a bit yesterday which wasn’t reported correctly by the media.. Hopefully he is feeling great and ready to smash Hardy on Sunday. I desperately want to see JP kick his ass for 60 minutes

  54. 54 A_T_G said at 10:31 AM on November 4th, 2015:

To be fair, Lee saying that our OL lost us that game falls on the acknowledging the obvious scale one notch up from saying that we lost because we scored less points than they did.

  55. 55 GEAGLE said at 3:27 PM on November 4th, 2015:

Lane admitted It. He doesn’t deny it.. But whatever they have to tell themselves to get them fired up and ready to smash dallas is fine with me.. I don’t need their reasons to be true, I just need the desired results and play with passion, fire and make sure they DONT leave dallas without a win..

  56. 56 scratcherk said at 12:14 PM on November 4th, 2015:

I still dont understand how other teams can’t anticipate the snap when the RG is patting the C on the thigh right before every snap

  57. 57 CHRIS said at 1:37 PM on November 4th, 2015:

would love to see once or twice where the RG taps Kelce but the snap doesn’t go off and the DL jumps. Just once, please?

  58. 58 John Dunkerley said at 5:22 PM on November 4th, 2015:

Fooled their own guys a few times so far this year, would be nice if it actually affected the defense instead.

  59. 59 GEAGLE said at 2:41 PM on November 4th, 2015:

There is an espn video you can probably find from after the first dallas game where the microphones picked up our Cadence throughout the game, and Stink Schlereth was illustrating how the Dallas DL got a jump on our OL on most of the plays, timing there rush perfectly right at the end of Bradfords “ready, set, go”… The DL was getting such a jump on us that it looked like we were facing a team of a bunch of Vinny Currys who were getting a jump on our OL the majority of the plays, which is really Bad… that should NEVER happen. the One advantage an OL has is they are supposed to know exactly when the ball will be snapped where as the Defense has to guess or react..
    ..
I think Chip is still growing as a pro coach and GM and we should see him evolve as he gains experiemce, one thng im hoping to see change is we pass on using tools so that we can just hike the ball as fast as possible… We pass on opportunities to throw off DLs with our cadence, allowing our OL to fire off the ball before the DL, we miss out on opportunities to audible into better plays when Bradford sees what the defense is going to do.. chip has built in options in each play that are supposed to be able to counter whatever the defense throws at us, our QB has to read the defense and Quickily chose the option best suited to Attack what he reads, and while that’s all great, SAM has high football IQ, when he reads a defense and knows what they are about to throw at us, it would be great to see him take an extra 8 seconds to audible in a play that even better suited to attack what the defense is about to throw at us…
    ..
I like using Tempo more than everyone else.. But now that we have established that, and Everyone expects that of us, Id like to see us Evolve and start to use teams expectng us to use tempo against our opponents.. For example once defenses get used to us Linning up and snap the ball as fast as possible, switch it up, fake them out with our cadence and force the defense into Nuetral zone infractions, make the game easier for our offense, turning a 1st and 10 Into more manageable 1st and 5… In the name of constant Tempo, there is too many weapons or ways that we could make the game easier for our offense that we are not using to our advantage just so we can get the ball snapped as quick as possible… I believe in our tempo, we see it pay dividends all the time when we pick up a few first downs and start gassing defenses…. But now that everyone expects us to snap the ball as fast as possible, I hope to also see us start to use that expectations against defenses we face… There is too much we aren’t using to our advantage all because we want to line up as fast as possible, and go ready, set, go as fast as we can..
    ..
I want to continue using tempo the majority of the time, but also use opponents expecting our tempo against them at times to make it easier on our offense… keep using our tempo, but when Bradford sees something in the defense, nothing wrong with slowing it down a second and audibling into a play that can really do some damage against what the defense is about to do… Pick up a few first downs, moving fast, defense starts to get fatigue, so they try to rely more on getting a jump timing our snap, use it against them and draw them offsides and pick up a free 5 yards..
    ..
I like our tempo, I like our option plays, but there is so much more that we can be taking advantage of to help our offense, and right about now, offense needs all the help we can get,,, if drawng opponents offside is good enough for the great QBs like Aaron Rogers and Brady, it’s good enough for us to add to our tool box.
    ..
I love Chips offense and what he brought to this team, but as he gains more and more experience Id like to see chip expand and add more to our offense, instead of just restricting us to constant and predictable tempo and one of the smaller Playbooks… As defenses get better understandings of what we do, we have to stay ahead of them and expand and add to our offense what defenses ARENT expecting to see from us… Become more like the Patriots
    .
The best offensive system I have ever seen is The Patriots offense, because they DONT have an Offensive system.. there Offensive system is to every week Morph into a new offense best suited to attack the opponent they face that week,.. The Patriots run the “whatever it takes to hang 50 on you” offense…. Now that chip is here for 3 years and he has laid his foundation, Id like to see us start evolving and staying ahead of the curve.,,
    .
Fortunately chip is a bright offensive mind who can’t stand scoring less than 30, so I do believe he will morph and evolve to do whatever it takes to keep being towards the top of the league in scoring. The drastic adjustments may not come Til the offseason, but if It’s true that we became too predictable, I trust that it will force chip to adjust, evolve and do what it takes continue to score points in this league, but I don’t think we have reached the point whete we need drastic change to stay ahead of the curve, because I think a lot of our current Flaws are due to a bunch of new offensive players needing more than 7 games togethet to really see their full ability, and we should start to see it at some point this year, hopefully we don’t have to wait Til the end of the year when we are eliminated from the playoffs.. A team with so many changes was always going to have to grow and improve as the year unfolded and we got games and weeks of training under our belt.. hopefully we play our best football come playoff time, instead of playing our best when it’s too late and have to look for moral victories late in the year..
    ..
When we see good performances like the Saints game, Jets game, even Bradford playing his best in the Carolina loss, I keep Hoping that it’s the performance we need to turn this season around, and then we take a step back and prove that we are still too inconsistent… not ONLY do we NEED to hope for a Crucial win aganst Dallas, but we have to hope that the dallas win will be our turning point and go on to build on the win.. beating Dallas is CRUCIAL, but it won’t mean much if we lay an egg the following week…we Need to come together, turn the corner as a team and start stringing together a good stretch of wins where we show a little more growth each game..Its a nerve wrecking week to be an Eagle fan

On top of having issues with his mental health, having to deal with his domestic violence issue, oblique injury, playing like crap, Joseph Randle allegedly also ran his mouth about how the Cowboys showed favoritism to DEz BRyant and Josh Brent, excusing their crimes, getting into it with Jason Garrett which almost started this big fight on the practice field.. Funny to think that this was the ass Clown who ripped Murray on the way out….
    .
After GReg Hardy flipped out on ST coach and his teammates last week, and DEz flipped out on reporters this week, Im so desperate to see how much worse it will get for that scumbag franchise if they lose again this week… Dallas is in a very fragile state right now (which is what happens when you face adversity after not prioritizing Charechter in your locker room), I’ll be Crushed if we let them off the hook and allow them to beat us.. I desperately want us to give Dallas the Loss that really sends that franchise into a full blown Implosion… We have the Cowboys in our Crosshairs, perfect opportunity to land the Kill Shot. Wee BETTER NOT LET THEM OFF THE HOOK and give them Hope… Just the thought of life after losing this game is unbearable

If I’m not mistaken he actually did practice some yesterday but it was incorrectly reported… Obviously this isn’t ideal news, out of all our injured players, JP is easily the most important this week. I’d feel so much better If he came back from the bye week, feeling great, ready to get a good week of training in and be ready to put on a clinic of domination against that vile, despicable piece of cow shit, Greg Hardy. I really want to see our OL Attack Hardy and go after him all night.
    ..
If our offense is going to struggle in the first half like we usually do, I hope to see Chip finally commit to the run the way he is supposed to and see one half of football where we just run the ball on every first and second down.. At least running the ball minimizes the chances Hardy will get to hit Bradford, and if our Offense is going to struggle THe first half, Id rather us struggle leaning on the run game, so our lineman can fire off the ball and Attack and wear down Hardy and the Cowboys front 7, instead of being on our heels trying to pass block the entire half..continue to lean on and Attack Hardy the entire first half, sticking to pounding them with our run game, putting SAM in a complimemtary role, opening up some big play action opportunities for him to attack down field.
    ..
I’ll be upset if both Ryan Mathews and Demarco don’t carry the ball at least 15 times each..we have No Business asking SAM to throw 50 plus passes to struggling Wrs.. We invested more money than everyone else in our RBs. It’s the most talented position in our offense, time to start leaning on our run game, and ask the Veteran RBs to carry us out Of these tough times

It’s not a question of commitment. Kelly calls lots of 1st-down runs.

Hard to call a running play on 2nd and 8-12 yards.

Almost every week this year we say it’s a “MUST WIN”.. But it’s probably Never been truer than this week! It’s depressing enough to NEED to win This week just to get back to .500, but unfortunately winning sunday is just a start. We NEED to BEAT Dallas, AND we NEED for the win to be our turning point and go on to build on the win. Start improving each week and string together a few wins.
    ..
after we beat the Giants. I so desperately wanted it to be our “turning point”, yet we lay an egg in Carolina, and now we find ourselves once again needing a win just to get back to .500… I can’t take much more of this one step forward, one step back crap… It’s driving me crazy and the worst part about our struggles is that the entire NFC sucks, we can Never ask for a more wide open year in the NFC, where everyohe is very beatable… We look at like Its been a horrendous year, yet we still find ourselves a win out of the division league which is the ultimate mindfuck that’s really making this maddening.. If the Division sitting a win away ISNT enough of a mindfuck, the GB Packers, Seattle Seahawks, Saimts, Falcons, Panthes all very beatable…as stressful as This year is, it’s amazing that every important goal we set is still right there in front of us..and that’s what makes This such a stressful season

But even tho everything we want is still attainable, Losing this Dallas game could RUIN US because if no one seperates from the rest of the division, losing this Dallas game puts us at 1-3 in the Division putting us at serious risk of losing the tiebreakers at the end of the year if the divisional parity continues..
    ..
dallas is 0-5 without Romo, they are averaging 12 points scored per game, we NEED REVENGE from an extremely Embarressing week 2 loss, we are in position to almost completely end Dallas Season. While getting back to .500 and first place of this division. We are almòst comletely Healthy and coming off a bye, If we lose to THIS Dallas team that struggles to even score 14 points, I seriously can’t point to a worse loss in the chip era. it would be ROCK BOTTOM, even worse than last years late season collapse… I can’t handle losing this week. It’s too stressful to even enjoy and get excited to play our wounded hated rival

Nothing — unless he wants continue building his reputation as a better version of Les Miles.

Why did Saban quit the NFL?

Chip Kelly says because Saban didn’t have a franchise QB in Miami.

And what NFL team, with the best young QB in football, will have a coaching vacancy starting anywhere from next week to early January?

    Yes . . . the Colts.

Saban to the Colts? That’s my bet.

He failed in his first NFL job. I don’t see that happening again if he has a great QB around which to build.

  95. 95 TypicalDouche said at 2:38 PM on November 4th, 2015:

I don’t think the disdain for Saban is about him leaving the NFL, but more about the way he left Miami and the league. It was a real coward way to ditch your team the way he did. I am so angry at that piece of crap virtual rag. There is not one shred of evidence that either team is interested in a move like that. It is not a report, it is further conjecture dressed up as a report.

Florio does this all the time. He makes some dumbass statement that shows he’s nothing more than a lawyer who operated a shitty website for years, with no actual football knowledge or acumen. When people call him out on how stupid his statement was, he digs in and gets smart-assed about it. He not only can’t admit when he was wrong, he turns into a complete dick about it.

CHIP KELLY IS UNDER CONTRACT. He has no desire to move. Why would he, to a far less talented roster, with MUCH, MUCH, MUCH (I can’t emphasize this enough) shittier management? That makes absolutely ZERO sense. Except for Marcus Mariota. Which, frankly, isn’t reason enough.

    To recap:

    * Florio has no business reporting on the NFL
    * Florio is egregiously treating his own conjecture as “inside information”
    * Chip Kelly is under contract
    * Tennessee has far less roster talent
    * Tennessee has a far worse fan base (apathetic)
    * Tennessee has far worse management, and will likely be sold within the next few years (Bud Adams’s died, after all).

Other than Marcus Mariota, and click baiting, this scenario makes no sense.

I would like there to be one month out of the year where it was forbidden to post blatant trolling/click baiting under the guise of sports journalism. It would be so, so refreshing.
