A Good Sign?
Posted: December 4th, 2015 | Author: Tommy Lawlor | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 395 Comments »Things have not been fun in Eagleland recently. There was the loss to the Bucs. Then tons of negativity. There was the loss to the Lions. Then even more negativity.
Until today.
Maybe I’m nuts, but Chip Kelly seemed…happy…at his press conference.
Chip joked with reporters. He smiled several times. He was still snarky with some questions, but more in a playful way than bitter or angry. This may not seem like a big deal, but it struck me as funny how different he seemed than any time I’ve seen him in the last several weeks.
NFL coaches set the tone for their team. My favorite example of this is something Jimmy Johnson did back in 1993. Dallas was the defending Super Bowl champs. They were about to play SF in a rematch of the previous NFC title game. Jimmy sensed his players were nervous. On the night before the game he called a local radio station and told them Dallas would win the game. He told them to print his statement in big, bold letters…WE WILL WIN. Sure enough, Dallas won. Jimmy’s proclamation gave his players confidence and their nerves went away.
I don’t know if Chip sensed something with his team that caused him to put on a happy face. Or maybe he was legitimately in a good mood. Maybe he had some delicious chocolate pudding for lunch. That’s usually enough to make anyone smile.
Whether real or fake, it was good to see Chip in a, dare I say, chipper mood. The Eagles are in the middle of a 3-game losing streak. But you can’t brood forever. At some point, you need to let go of the misery and move forward. The Eagles can’t undo the past. They have to focus on playing better football. One way to do that is for the players to start feeling good about themselves.
If you carry the baggage of past games onto the field Sunday, it is going to be an ugly game. Let that go. Play with some emotion and some confidence. Have fun. Chip says that emotion follows execution and he’s right to a certain extent. But you can also help matters by having the right state of mind during the week and when you take the field.
Maybe I’m making too much of a simple mid-week PC, but I thought it was good to see Chip smiling and joking. I think the players need to see that. A coach is at his best when he can be himself. I think of Chip as a positive guy. I think of him as someone more likely to smile than have a scowl on his face.
The proof will be in the pudding. Does the team play better on Sunday? Do they have a different vibe than the previous couple of weeks? Do they, dare I say, win? I just want to see the Eagles go out and play well. The Dolphins loss was a sloppy affair. The last 2 weeks were disastrous. I want this team to go make some plays so that I can have a smile on my face on Sunday.
*****
Apparently Adam Schefter had a note about the Eagles being interested in Johnny Manziel. BGN has the details.
Obviously this would be something for the offseason, but nothing will surprise me. Mark Sanchez has proven he’s not a guy you want starting. Sam Bradford hasn’t lit the world up. Manziel has played better this year. He’s shown real flashes of ability.
The problem is that Johnny Off-Field keeps getting in the way of Johnny Football. The obvious comment is that he doesn’t come close to fitting Chip’s culture. But you have to remember that the Eagles might be desperate for QB help in the offseason. And a change of scenery can make all the difference in the world. Brett Favre was a party animal in Atlanta in 1991 and couldn’t get close to the field. He then went to Green Bay. He drank beer, but hung out with teammates and developed into a Hall of Fame QB. He never turned into a saint, but he became a reliable person and player.
Get Manziel out of Cleveland and put him into a better environment. That might help him to turn things around, on and off the field.
_
Chip recruited Manziel heavily at Oregon, and even had him as a “commit” for a short time in 2010. JFF allegedly flipped to A&M when he realized Mariota was better. But it’s safe to say Kelly likes his capabilities.
The Eagles have absolutely nothing to lose in this game Sunday. Absolutely zero pressure. Nobody is giving them a snowball’s chance in hell to win this game. We should play loose, aggressive, fast and without a fear in the world. We should take chances and see if we can shock the world! Imagine how a win in this scenario could change the outlook of the future of this team. Maybe it’s the turning point of the franchise? If they lose nobody will care and it’s expected. You never know!!! 🙂
wouldn’t change the future. It’s one game. But it would change the present outlook. And make a lot of people feel better before the crushing divisional losses looming on our schedule.
I kid, I kid…
That’s what I was thinking. Players and coaches are probably pretty loose right now. For the first time in a while, they are the underdog. Bradford and Peters appear to be healthy. Gronk and Edelman are out.
I agree. Ironically, all of the negative talk has put the team in a no-lose situation. Seriously, get blown out 44-2 (Brady merciful steps out of the endzone) and what changes from present?
Step up, play loose and fast and either do a Rocky 1 (take the champ to the distance) or pull the upset and the rhetoric changes.
The key is if Kelly and the team’s leadership were able to develop a ‘foxhole’ mentality this week… an us against the world type thing… If that is the case, the NFL might regret taking this off the nationwide feed.
So years later, after a HOF career with the Eagles, we can look forward to Johnny Football texting his junk to a reporter?
Feel free..
Everything you post is funnier because of your avatar.
Moe, Larry, cheese!
Everyone has to have something going for them…
He’s getting fired and snapped?
Can Chip pry Manziel away from the Browns for Bradford, a 2nd and a 4th round pick?
you’re en fuego tonight… 🙂
I don’t see Chip having a lot of interest in Manziel but, you never know, he could tear an ACL.
The Boys cold be active players for him given Romo’s status as an oft- injured, aging QB. Plus Jones’s love affair with him in his draft year.
Johnny Manziel to the Cowboys in the off-season would be so perfect.
Plus Jerry the jerk doesn’t give a rat’s ass about character.
Hope these two thoughts aren’t somehow connected lol
hey, just got home from work and watched the GB/Det highlights and have a couple questions:
1. That sure as hell wasn’t a facemask, but would that have been an illegal hands to the face penalty anyway?
2. Was Calvin Johnson in on the hail mary play? I couldn’t see if he was.
2a. If Johnson wasn’t in on that play, why the hell wasn’t he? He’s probably the #1 guy in the league you’d want as an extra safety to knock a jump ball like that down.
Yes CJ should have been in on the hail Mary play. I have no idea why he wasnt
Wouldn’t be a hands to the face because the contact was incidental, I believe. Generally they only call that when the hand is placed on the mask and kept there for a length of time.
thx
Great idea seems obvious but i didnt think of puting cal johnson out ther..but man what a perfect i dw a.. did no pro lion employee even think of that?? Calvin should have just run out on his own…
I had some questions too:
1. How did the 4 yd catch to Tate on that last Detroit possession take 6 secs but the 29 yd pass only take 4? Clock should have gone to the 2 min warning and Detroit should have been in victory formation.
2. Does Detroit really think their NT is one of their best pass rushers?
3. Why is their best pass rusher, Ziggy Ansah, who’s 2nd in the league in sacks, in coverage on that last play, 15 yards downfield covering…no one? WTF?
I have it on good authority that Manziel wasn’t even on the Eagles draft board. Now, maybe if he gets cut, it’s a low risk move like Tebow. Or maybe with the way this season has gone, Chip has changed his mind. But I think this is a case of a ‘reporter’ throwing something against the wall to see if it will stick.
I’ll be disgusted if he brings him in. You passed on other talented individuals that might not even have issues as bad as Manziel to protect that “culture” you built up. Why dismantle it now because it’s low risk? La’el Collins was as low as a risk can be in the 7th round but you know what? Lets take a chance on a drunken idiot that will never get what it takes to be a professional
The Eagles are more likey to draft a QB in rounds 1 or 3 than sign Manziel. I would rather they give Bradford another contract if they can get him at a reasonable price and a relatively short term.
I don’t mean to be an ass about this, but if your team is playing historically bad and the coach appears to in good spirits about it, I honestly don’t know if that makes me feel much better. I’d probably prefer if he was pissed off.
WE WILL LOSE
Sigh, now the Eagles players won’t be nervous
That’s pretty funny
The only good sign will be me watching the Eagles game on Sunday LIVE – as you might recall their record is 0-4 when GermanEagle doesn’t watch them LIVE.
So there is a chance.
Hey, I’ll be flying up for the game as well. A buddy of mine offered me a few tickets for free awhile back (when we all still thought we were super bowl contenders). You’re welcome to join us at their rather large tailgate. PM me if you’re interested.
Cheers, bud. But my ‘LIVE’ comment was with regards to watching them on TV.
Whenever I have watched the game taped or ‘as LIVE’, the Eagles lost and are 0-4 this year. ;))
Enjoy the game and bring back a W please!
Ahhh yes “GermanEagle” I get it now. Would be quite a commute for you I imagine.
It would be only a 4 hours ride from New York.
Oh man just disregard everything I’ve said…I’ve pretty much misinterpreted every single thing you’ve said.
Lol. No worries, mate. My nickname might be misleading sometimes, though I am born and bread in Germany. I have moved to New York two years ago. 😉
I know you guys want to ride the narrative of Brady not having his WRs/Gronk..but Cam beat us without WRs too.
I think CAM has beaten 11 teams the same way, most with a better record than us.
He is relatively unknown, but I’m pretty sure that New England’s quarterback has a decent track record of beating teams as well.
Didn’t that guy win some shiny trophies that we don’t have too?
If you’re into that kind of vainglory and need to be validated by other people.
Pssh, he wasn’t even a first round pick.
Brady performs as an above-average starter without Gronk; with Gronk he’s, well, Brady. Doesn’t mean we’re going to win, but it does shift the odds to a great degree.
https://www.numberfire.com/nfl/news/7006/what-does-rob-gronkowski-s-injury-mean-for-tom-brady#
Cam’s stat line sucked against us.
I’d say it was their defense that beat us, but that was the game where we had 9 drops from wide-open receivers. Our own offense beat us in that game…
So, you are saying there’s a chance?!?
Not if Miles Austin has anything to say about it.
Still had Olsen at TE (quietly one of the better ones in the game) and better talent at RB right now than Brady has this week.
Seems to have become pretty fashionable the past week or two to say that Cam is the MVP so far and it is such BS. Cam’s numbers are inferior to his own numbers in ’13 let alone stiff what Brady has done. Just the haters looking to stick it to Brady.
So, Johnny or Colin K?…………………………………………………
……………………………. I’m still thinking…………………………….
what about both? need two and draft 1..
That won’t leave room for RGIII, though.
Or Tebow.
Easy now, at least the other 3 have talent…Let’s not get carried away.
I dislike Manziel in a similar way that MM dislikes Cam. I would vote for None of the Above!
i hate them both equally
Bamboo shoots under the fingernails, or waterboarding?
Johnny, Colin, RG3 and run them with reckless abandon. You don’t like them you say? Perfect! You will enjoy your Sundays one way or another.
The Patriot Act has allowed New England to tap phone lines. This transcript of a pre-press conference phone call explains Kelly’s mood:
Bill: So, I told my guys that if the last two opponents put up 90 points on you, we better put up at least 90 as well.
Chip: I appreciate the warning.
Bill: Well, you seem like a decent coach, I hate to kill you.
Chip: And you seem like a decent coach. I hate to die.
Bill: You are using a up tempo spread, you must expect me to counter with ball control.
Chip: I would consider it appropriate, considering the unpredictable weather.
Bill: True, unless you have a magical QB, which I do.
Chip: I admit you are better than me.
Bill: Then why are you smiling?
Chip: Because I know something you don’t know.
Bill: And what is that?
Chip: I have not left college.
so Chip wins in this movie analogy right? sounds good to me.
Not quite…

Nice, very well done.
So, you’re saying that it’s not inconceivable the Eagles might win?
By the way, it has been repeated that DeMarco is worn out and Kelly was dumb to sign a back with 400 carries last year due to overuse. The overuse thing has been debunked years ago–there is no magic number of ideal carries for a RB. His going downhill is probably due to bad OL play and simple regression to the mean (maybe scheme).
http://archive.advancedfootballanalytics.com/2008/07/drunkards-light-posts-and-myth-of-370.html
No but it isn’t surprising that Murray has struggled a bit for multiple reasons this year. It has helped either that the screen pass has almost completely dried up too.
I do put a piece of this on Murray though including his effort a few times this year. There were 1, maybe 2, games where I thought he rand with nearly the same kind of determination to pick up extra yards especially after contact. His teammates have to be seeing the same thing too especially the guys on this team who played against him twice the past year or two.
Murray has been my least favorite Eagles’ player this year besides maybe Austin (who should have been cut a month ago).
Good news everyone! It’s been more than a week since the Eagles last lost a football game in embarrassing fashion, savour this moment.
after waffling for a couple of days my 6 year old tells me in the battle between his two teams, he is rooting for the Pats. I can’t blame him.
Ground him.
He’s old enough to be kicked out
Did you ask him where he is going to to to watch the game?
Packers won in a magical fashion last night, but they still can’t feel good about struggling to win against the Lions. To me it’s obvious that they’re not the juggarnaught they looked like they would be to start the season. It’s the Panthers world now, only the Cardinals really might have a shot at unseating them in the playoffs.
Great floods start with a single drop… (or in our case, multiple drops…)
the window of opportunity seems to be shutting for a Packers deep playoff run
They need to revamp that coaching staff. Not going to multiple SBs with Aaron rodgers (not to mention Clay Matthews on the other side) is a failure.
i agree with all of this, so in conclusion…….the giants are winning another super bowl
“Get Manziel out of Cleveland and put him into a better environment. That might help him to turn things around, on and off the field.” 100% agree with this. As long as the better environment isn’t in Philly…
The argument was for a “better environment”. Jury still out – #culture…
I wrongly assumed any place is better than Cleveland. I stand corrected…
That’s true, apparently we have no accountability here.
is philly a better environment you cant lose 2 games here w/out ppl going crazy
As always, appreciate the early morning deep dive into EAGLES. Want to go watch NFL channel but I know, all I will see is Packer magic, Aaron is amazing, are they REALLY back, blah, blah, blah – cover me, I’m goin in…

I’ll say after the last week or so and the multitude of player comments & reactions that ‘Chip’s culture’ is built on quicksand and that is team is largely devoid of locker room leadership on both sides of the ball.
No fan base in the NFL has nearly the reason to bitch as the Lions do. They have been jobbed now on 3 calls at the end of a game that have directly cost them a W the past 2 years.
NFL could always actually pay for salaried, full-time refs and boost their salaries a bit but good forbid they would have to start to pay full benefits packages then and pay a bit more in costs.
I believe that part of the problem is that the refs(at least the current ones) don’t want it to be a full time job
Is it just me, or does the sun actually shine a little brighter when everyone is predicting that Eagles will lose?
More like a pair of well-worn shoes. For sure they stink, but they just feel right.
No way on Manziel. Tebow was a good guy; he just could not play QB at this level. Signing a basket case who also cannot play QB at this level? No thanks. Making choices out of desperation rarely ever works. See how Bradford does these last 5 games and then evaluate everything at the end of the season.
Any dude who gets dumped because he won’t put out is not a “good guy”.
Manziel might put more time in at practice if there was a bar along the sidelines
manzeil is also way too short
This past month, and Still Today, we are LIVING a crash course of the IMPORTANCE of Charechter,,, and im not talking about Chips boyscouts Charechter, Im talking about FOOTBALL CHARECHTER!
..
If there is ANYTHNG good to come out of this mess, at the very least, each Eagles Fan, Media member, player and coach should have learned the importance of HOW A PLAYER HANDLES ADVERSITY…
..
How a guy handles adversity is extremely important at every position, for every team.. But it’s even MORE IMPORTANT when we are talking about the QB position. it’s the most important and hardest position in sports, that REQUIRES leadership qualities.. If a guy can’t handle adversity in San Fran or Cleveland, he stands NO CHANCE in this City. Facing Adversity is guaremteed in this sport. As we are seeing right Now, it can be even tougher in THIS CITY, with THIS FANBASE and THIS media market..
..
We have better and Classy playërs today than manziel and KAp who are currently struggling with facing adversity in THIS CITY, like malcolm Jenkins, Fletcher COX, BG, hall of Famer Jason Peters… And I ain’t talking about QBs.
..
This is EASILY one of the Toughest cities to play in, and QB is easily the toughest and most important positin in sports.. How in the world can anyone even consider Guys who struggled miserably to handle playng Qb in San Fran and Cleveland, in THIS MUCH TOUGHER, much more DEMANDING CITY?
..
You can’t even consider them as option in THIS city… And I haven’t even mentioned how Horrible they have been on the field yet lol…
1)Average to below average in terms of repetive accuracy for starting QBs
.
2) Below Average to complete failure in leadership duties that come with that position
.
3) Average to below Average in QB Intelligence
..
What the hell is there to even like? QBs that are TERRIBLE in just about every single area except for their ability to run fast and execute Zone reads? Are we fucking nuts?… How can anyone see the adversity our guys are facing right now, how they are struggling with fans and media, and even consider Kap and Johnny as the Solutions to our mess? Have we lost our minds?
..
I can’t Name 5 starting QBs in the NFL that would be worst options to play QB in THIS CITY.. If I had to list the 5 worst QB optins to play in THIS demanding City, I would say (In no specific order)
1) Johnny Manziel (you think Jahlil Okafor is gettng trouble in old city? Lol)
.
2) KAPERNICK… A “leader” who stopped speaking to teammates and coaches during tôugh times earlier in the season
.
3) Rg3
..
4) Geno Smith
..
5) Jay Cutler
…
You have to be insane to think RG3, Manziel, KAp, Geno or Jay Cutler can handle playing the MOST IMPORTANT position in Philly Sports, and be asked to lead us thru adversity in THIS market…
..
Not Every good player is cut from the right cloth to be able to play in This City..
..
change of scenery can be a great thing for playërs, but we would have to be crazy to think we can trust kids who couldnt be trusted in Cleveland and San Fran, especially at the most memtally demanding and most important position in sports…..
..
Struggling in New York had Sanchez Prepared to be able to handle this city… As someone who is at peace with the fact that LURIE won’t fire chip after this year, there is little that chip could do to make me lose respect for his ability than if his solution to this seasons mess is to bring in someone like KAp, Manziel, GENO, Cutler or RG3…, you can’t even think of those mutts as a QB of the Philadelphia Eagles… Id rather go into a season with Sanchez a rookie And THAD Lewis..
..
You Think chips Charechter CULTURE failed NOW, lol this is nothing compared to what would happen with kAp or Manziel as the QB of this passionate, demanding, City, starving for a Super Bowl
He’s in a good mood because Sunday he can’t lose. We lose to the Patriots, even get smoked, no big deal… that is expected. Chip and the Eagles play them tough, we get a moral victory and maybe something of a confidence boost going forward. We win, well…. that ain’t happening but its always nice to dream.
true
Chung knows the defense DJ2 knows the offense. I’m being realistic about sunday.
Right. Chung demonstrated excellent grasp and execution of the defense during his time here. Look for Belichick to pick his brain on Sunday.
“Philly Voice’s Jimmy Kempski doesn’t expect 2014 first-round OLB Marcus Smith back with the Eagles in 2016.”
Smith has yet to make a tackle since being selected 26th overall in last year’s draft. All of the Eagles’ first-round targets were plucked off the board right ahead of them in 2014, and they panicked and took Smith in a big-time reach. He hasn’t panned out in the least bit and may quickly be falling out of the league. Look for
the Eagles to try and trade him for anything in the offseason.
If we cut MSII there better not be an article from JK asking why we couldn’t get value. Although how he hasn’t recorded a solo tackle i’m not sure.
Kempski is not a reliable source
He was dead on when he broke the Desean Jackson story.
You might not like his take on things, but he’s hardly unreliable.
i only started commenting here this past summer, but were most people actually surprised by the release of Desean? Not trying to sound like a know it all, because im not at all, but i thought that was really obvious based on reports of him and Chip not getting along during the season and then what sealed it for me was the day after they lost to the Saints and the players were cleaning out their lockers they had the media in there and Desean brought up his contract outta nowhere and i remember an OL, possibly Kelce, shooting him a look like “seriously, bro?”
I only ask because i think the majority of commenters here are obvious die-hard fans and converse pretty much every day and i wasn’t sure if people here saw the writing on the wall or not.
I was surprised, lots of dead $ plus pro bowl guy, figured they’d keep him if they couldn’t trade him, was surprised to flat cut him given team history and on-field performance, but in hindsight i can understand the on and off the field logic..
yea i admit i was surprised at the cut, thought he would be moved by trade
“yea i admit i was surprised at the cut, thought he would be moved by trade”
“i only started commenting here this past summer, but were most people actually surprised by the release of Desean?”
ummm either way i thought he was gone……what’s the difference in the end?
He’s made more accurate calls on the Eagles than misses. And wayyyyy more accurate than anybody else writing about the team
Even simple and obvious things like “the offensive line is too old and makeshift” that no one else was talking about.
he had the eagles going to the NFC championship game this year and losing to seattle, along with Bradford winning comeback player of the year. He does the classic throw shit at a wall and capitalize on whatever sticks, and then ignore the stuff that doesn’t.
He’s not 100%. But who predicted the Eagles would suck as badly as they do?
Maybe some Giants fan?
Token and Heath Evans.
honestly i remember Heath back during training camp saying how talented they were, but still saying his usual Chip stuff: needs to slow down offense, “high school offense”, etc.
Even the other day on sports radio he still said he thinks the Eagles are a very talented team…..i think he says it’s talented so if they win, he can say it’s because of the talent…if they lose, Chip is failing the team. Just hedging his bets…kinda like Kempski
Lol re our old offense line. He’s been beating that dead horse for years now which becomes boring.
He’s right though, and he was right from a long way out. It’s not like he’s posting in hindsight.
I don’t particularly mind his cynical point of view on the team because I kind of share it, but I could see how it could rub people the wrong way.
He’s made a half tackle. How “glass half empty” of Kempski to not give him credit for that. Negadelphian!
I don’t expect Kempski to have an opinion worth reading or passing along any time soon….
…
I don’t care that he rips the Eagles. I’m in no mood to defend an Eagles right now, but Kempski IMO has been nose diving for a few years now and is approaching ElliotShor Parks level or worthlessness these days… at least Elliot you a laugh at, as sort of the “Court jester of the Philly media”… kempski has replaced Marcus Hayes as the new Jackass, bitter, troll Of the philly media..
…
Sure miss Sheil Kapadia and Kate Fagan These days.
Hahaha we,are so bad, we are starting to be connected to Manziel. If that ain’t Rock Bottom, I don’t know what Is… The Only jackass since the movie,”Friday” who got fired on his day off..
.
Finally he earned enough trust for his coaches to let him play out the season, and this donkey gets himself demoted to 3rd string during a friggin bye week
..
As If connecting us to Kapernick wasn’t bad enough… can you imagine KAPERNICK, a QB who stopped talking to teammates and coaches because of adversity. Playing in THIS MARKET? Don’t make me laugh.. Kapernick is failing miserably on and off the field, crumbling because he can’t handle the bad times in San Francisco…. Can you imagine how KAPERNICK would be acting if he was our QB during this 3game stretch when our media, fans, and the losing is starting to get to guys that have exhibited by stronger CHarevhter than KAPERNICK…. Chip kelly happy at a press Confrence, isn’t good enough,of a sigń to make up for what we heard from high cHarechter guys like Jenkns, Fletcher Cox BG, Jason Peters this week..
..
If our players are struggling with the adversity In this high strung market, how the, fuck can anyone even say Kapernicks name as a potential option to play the most important leadership position in all of sports? that the guy you want to lead us out of the hard times? he has Failed so Miserably in his leadership duties that come with playing QB and cashing Big money QB checks, that his behavior, and LACK of cHarechter eliminates him as a QB option in THIS CITY, and I HAVENT even touched on his terrible QB play… Are people really this batshit crazy, that it has gotten to a point where people are talking about QBs who are way down the bottom of the starting QB rankings in terms of Football IQ, way down the rankings in terms of Charechter and Leadership, way down the rankings in terms of repetitive accuracy.. Yet because these fuckin Bums run fast, people actually consider them possibke answers?
..
I don’t know what’s worse, KAp and Manziels QB play, their QB brain, or their lack of Charechter and leadership…. I have Heard some STUPID SHIT as an eagle fan in the Past, but it really dpesmt get much dumber than suggesting we fix this mess by bringing horrible QBs, that are below average in just about EVERY area except running fast..
..
KAPERNICK and Manziel are TERRIBLE suggestion for any team, but in THIS MARKET, you have to be slow to think these kids wouldn’t be a complete disaster in THIS CITY, with us fans, and THIS MEDIA!! .
.
If we think they handled themselves terribly in San Fran and Cleveland, what’s going to happen in philly when we go 4-7 and the sky is falling, and Media is calling for EVERYONEs heads on a platter every day, for the rest of the season
..
QB is the most important and hardest positipn in sports… You stRting QB has to be a LEADER to some degree. McNabb Wasnt the greatest leader, which was probably a limitation, but he want a horrible leader…
..
You have to be insane to think KAPERNICK or Manziel can play THAT position in THIS city… That’s just crazy..
..
mark Sanchez sucks. But when we brought him in, at least we knew that he had experience in a similar market, and was able to handle the bad times in such a tough market…. KAPERNICK can’t handle losing in San Fran, wtf is going to happen if he has a yeàr like this one in THIS CITY?
..
Hnestly, Id rather have Tim Tebow….. I am resigned to the fact that Lurie isn’t going to fire chip after this year and im fine with it, It’s the Right move,.. But if Chip comes to LURIE and says that the solution to this mess is trading for KAp or Manziel, LURIE has to tell him “GET THE FUCK OUT OF HERE, NOW!!!! Do Not pass go, Do Not Collect $200. Just GTFO here!!
..
I simply can’t believe this is true. I can’t believe a coach who valued Charechter and Leadership would be considering Two QB’s who can’t be trusted as Leaders, Who DEFINTELY can’t be Trusted in THIS CITY.. Below average football Intelligenve, below average accuracy.. Lol Media and San Fran fans were excited at the beginning of the season because it looked like KAp was finally able to look to his 2nd READ… LOL a high paid, veteran QB, so bad that people were excited about finally seeing the field enough to not just look at his first read.. Like are we kidding?
,.
Johnny Manziel in Old city every weekend? Are people fucking Nuts?
..
Chip ISNT my favorite person these days, but I have to respect Chip enough to Think that the interest in KAp and Manziel can’t possibly be True.. It can’t be true
Upvote for geagle and a giggity for glen.
kap sucks, the eagles suck, rg3 sucks, sanchez sucks, murray sucks, Austin sucks, coops sucks, peters is old, tobin sucks, kelce sucks, Maxwell sucks, play calls suck, defense sucks, Kelly sucks, davis sucks, refs suck, fans suck, dallas sucks
That’s a plethora of “suckers”!
It is like the Cracken.
Just about the only good thing we can say is at least they’re not the Kracken
http://extratime.uol.com.br/wp-content/img/2015/10/Cowboys_Greg-Hardy-1260×710.jpg
I do not see any validity behind the Manziel story. As for Kaepernick and any of the other QBs that have been linked to the Eagles for next offseason, let me ask you this. Can Kaepernick/RG3/Rookie/Insert any other name here, be any worst the Bradford or Sanchez? I know you have a love for Bradford but honestly at this point he is what he is and that is a mediocre QB. To me if Chip truly plans to stick around and build this team up then he might as well draft a rookie and let Bradford walk and do not acquire any of those QBs.
Come on man… It can get much worse. Bradford has only Struggled on the field, KAp and Manziel will struggle on the field, and add an extra element of Failure off the field
..
Manziel, RG3, Jay Cutler, KAp and GENO Smith, can’t even be CONSIDERED for the most important position in philly Sports..
..
If we are to learn ANYTHING from this mess of a season, the SIGNIFICANT IMPORTANCE of how a player handles ADVERSITY… Why would we even talk about someone who is failing to handle adversity in friggin San Francisco or Cleveland, as an option to play in THIS city?
…
I would so much rather go into next year with Bradford, Sanchez and THAD Lewis, than to make an even bigger Mess with jokers like Rg3, Johnny, Kap,GENO or Cutler..
..
And this DOESNT even take into account that Im not even close to being ready to quit on Bradford…
..
Lol name one thing Johnny or KAp can do well besides running fast and being good at zone Reads? You think Bradfords bad? KAPERNICK is like a 5yr veteran with a lot of playoff experience and he is so underdeveloped as a QB, that San Fran fans were literally Excited because early tbis year It started to look like kAp was finally starting to be able to get to his second and 3rd reads LOL, you THINK BRADFORDS bad, at least he can see the friggin fields at least he has some clue about what defenses are doing…
..
And even if you are someone who looks at it like “Can it really be any worse than bradford”, THATS still dysfunctional. Chamge for the sake of change… YES, I’d so much prefer continuing to work with SAM to get him more comfortable in this offense, instead of chamge for the sake of chaNge,and replace SAM with someone I already know isn’t the Answer
Manziel, RG3, Jay Cutler, KAp and GENO Smith = coach killers
on a less serious note….Coldplay will perform at halftime of the Super Bowl, didn’t see that coming and to me it’s an odd choice. I enjoy some of their music…but for the Super Bowl, just doesn’t feel right….at least it can’t be as bad as Katy Perry
don’t blame me, i signed the petition for Weird Al to do it
can’t say that wouldn’t be entertaining in it’s own way
dare to be stupid, brother
Left Shark is a national treasure.
hah, same thought
I don’t know, the dancing shark who lost his vision from some kind of costume malfunction that ended up just doing a bunch of random crap was pretty memorable

My daughter loved that half-time show.
The Super Bowl has exhausted the list of ‘ancient rock groups’ and so they went with a band that has had only No. 1 hit in the US a decade ago.
The issue here is that they could go with somebody like Drake or Jay Z but there is no way White America (who still overwhelmingly makes up the viewership) would watch it. They would switch in large numbers especially the Boomers.
Just par for the course for Goddell.
i’d switch if it’s drake.
Drake, due to his anti-Philadelphia sports imagery in his feud with Meek Mill, is the next musician I hope dies a violent death.
if he hates the eagles he’d fit in pretty well in philly right now
He’s not permitted to do so because he isn’t a fan already. Our misery does not welcome extra company.
I don’t have a side in their feud but what Meek Mill did was pretty stupid.
Agreed that Meek is dumb, but when Drake brought the Joe Carter debacle into this he crossed a major line.
Not sure what the Joe Carter debacle is.
Joe Carter hit a walk off home run for the Blue Jays in game 6 of the 1993 World Series to beat the Phillies.
Ohhhh that explains it.
Disagree about Perry too. You may not like her but she is a huge draw, has had a bunch of hits including in the last several years, and is culturally relevant across a pretty broad range of demographics.
I do like some Coldplay stuff but they strike me as a poor choice for the Super Bowl half time for several reasons. One of the crappier concerts I have seen in a larger venue too.
Odd choice. Very odd choice.
I think there is a conspiracy to make the game more palatable to fans in the UK!
if that’s true why are they sending the NFC East over there for games next year? that’s not palatable for anyone
It would be great if the Eagles get excused from a true road game in St. Louis to play in London. We’ll show them what some proper hooligans can do.
Maybe bring Jah Okafor with them for some proper hooliganism.
That would be awesome.
If Hightower, Collins and Amendola all miss the game on Sunday, that will be a huge boost for the Eagles chances. However I happen to think that all three will dress instead…
I did like Kempski’s comment that Belicheck said they won’t even need to cheat against us, and that dropped the line from 13 to 9.
Unfort i am too neadelphian to think it matters. Belichek could dress Mamula, Dsnny Watkins, Freddie Mitchell and MSmith II and still beat us .. hell he vould probably best us with Sanchez … sorry is that too grim ??
No.
You’re probably right. Sigh…
Not in his first 5 years!. So many folks comparing a 3rd-year head coach to a 20-year head coach.
Chung is questionable as well!
What world do we live in that Patrick Chung is a serviceable Safety.
There’s a team that had a #1 overall pick at QB. He went down during a game, and they ended up losing that game by less than a FG, and they even missed an easy FG in that game.
Their #1 overall pick QB sat the next two games, and the team did poorly.
Why is the discussion about the Eagles not framed in such a way? They lost two games with a backup-caliber QB, and in both games could not get anything going on offense and kept handing the ball back to the other team in what seems like historically fast 3-and-outs.
You think sammy B makes a difference in either of those games?
I have no idea. I think people underestimate the effects of chance, flukes, and what side of the bed people wake up on when it comes to NFL games.
or a time traveling squirrel ruining a FG
I think the problem is that we’ve been screwed over by 51 or 52 consecutive seasons of chance, fluke, etc. stealing our well-deserved titles.
i like tommy’s explanation – you need a certain level of talent and coaching to overcome the flukes (because the flukes do happen to everyone)
I agree completely.
not to mention the dozen or so flukes that have caused us to lose each game this season. Such bad luck…
Team of destiny. Just not the destiny we were hoping for. ;~[
YEP
That’s the issue. Maybe he does in the Dolphins’ game but he isn’t the answer.
Bradford or Sanchez aren’t even good enough to be a 15-20 QB over the course of a season.
Bradford has been playing a lot better as of late. He got off to a really bad start. I don’t think he’s the long term answer but he may an option for the next few years(Alex Smith).
http://49.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lmcyat1oog1qk1bpao1_500.gif
I wish I thought Bradford could stay healthy or be as consistent as Smith.
Sammy B can’t trump Billy D.
this is philly. we don’t see the bright side in football losses
half the time we don’t see the bright side of wins.
you definitely win this one
And that doesn’t excuse Billy.
so go get him. teach him a lesson
Lesson one.
This is what you do when the other team is obviously throwing to their #1 WR who your “#1” CB can’t cover.
http://cover32.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/dez11.jpg
def got me there!
Sadly too many teams “got him” instead.
Somebody should teach him something
Agreed.
I like lessons.

How many times is Brady going to exploit Biggers and Rowe this week?
I’m going to go with under whatever number you think. I bet the Pats catch Billy D being overly concerned with passing matchups and we get burned for 200+ rushing yards. And when Blount runs over Alonzo and Kendricks on the same play I’ll totally snap.
Take your pick. Even without a lack of weapons, I told my friend to start Brady this week.
This secondary is a dumpster fire right now when they have to go into nickel with Rowe outside and Biggers inside. I wonder if they get so desperate again we see Jenkins in the slot at times.
to be fair, Rowe looked like shit against megatron. let’s hope that doesn’t happen every week
Or the RB passing plays the Pats run. I’m looking to seeing them run right by Alonso or Ryans in a bad mismatch.
Hell, I have confidence in the Pats scoring enough pts this week (24+) if they even brought back Deion Branch to play in the slot.
Or Damaris Johnson. ….
To be fair, Billy D should have never matched our rookie one on one with a future first ballot HoFer, without any safety help.
That game reminded me of the Winston Justice massacre and Davis should be fired for that game alone.
There was actually safety help. The safety didnt get over in time. Davis still should have had the safety shade toward Megatron more though.
Davis should be fired, full stop.
I saw a couple of those catches. Megatron was wearing the Eagles player’s jersey. If the passes hadn’t been complete, they would have been called pass interference. Why do you suppose Calvin gets paid the big bucks?
Rowe actually had pretty good coverage. The problem was it was against Megatron.
i mean they pretty much have to run it with everyone they have out.
Is Marcus Smith II one of the biggest busts in Eagles history?
“cant judge a pick for at least 3 years.”
Smart arse. I’m aware of that. Just some food for thought though.
Hes cutting it close
Jon Harris was (and had) a bigger reach. Failed epically. Antone Davis. Those are just a few that pop into my head.
That was before my time but his stat at least shows 2 sacks. Marcus Smith hasn’t recorded a single tackle!
Lol, snap! 😉
Maybe he can play QB
I think just 1…
Agreed. However if MS II doesn’t record more than solo 1 tackle next year he must be considered too, right?!
UVA. Sigh.
I really am knocking on wood here, but it’s been hard for him to crack the rotation with BG and Connor Barwin being pretty healthy. Last year he also had Trent Cole ahead of him.
Not even close.
“Patriots rule Edelman and Gronkowski out, Amendola questionable” Come on, we have to win this game, right?
http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2015/12/04/patriots-rule-edelman-and-gronkowski-out-amendola-questionable/
“we have to win this game, right?”
isn’t that what we’ve all said about the past three games?
Wait,
We didn’t win those games?! I thought it was a given!!!!
http://506sports.com/
I didn’t know FOX could air a game with 2 afc teams. 506 has them with the cincy/cleveland game. i always thought the game had to have at least one nfc team in order for them to broadcast it.
If the Thursday, Sunday, and Monday night games would have all been stolen from the same network, I think they get to steal one from the other conference.
oh, cool
Jonathan Jennings. Quarterback. Coached at pro level in 2015 by Jeff Tedford. Some players previously coached by Tedford: Aaron Rodgers, David Carr, Marshawn Lynch, Justin Forsett, Shane Vereen. Mostly at Cal.
Are we giving up on this team and Bradford already?
He’s very small. And currently in the CFL.
Rowe honestly had decent coverage on most plays against Megatron. There were a couple problems however, one being a rookie having to cover a hall of famer in the first place and two, while there was safety help it was too late on many cases. It can be blamed on the safety for not unserstanding there was a rookie on Megatron and he should have shaded more or on Davis for not telling them that at the start. I blame Davis.
Davis should be fired.
Yep
There was safety help, but it wasn’t double coverage. It was pitch and catch so Stafford looked the safety off a couple of time. Birds 24/7 had a really good piece where they broke down the coverages. Billy said that he though Megatron was a better matchup than golden tate, which i think is fair consideration how Rowe looked in the slot earlier in the year (and that tate was crushing eric off the line last thursday).
The real problem is we have no pass rushers. This would be one reason why i’d advocate a 43 instead of a 34. It’s hard to find a 34 OLB unless you’re picking at the top of the draft and you get lucky one year. In 43 you’d have good pass rushers and it’s easier to work in the “specialists” that you can get in the middle rounds (curry types).
For sure, Rowe had good coverage. But we’re talking about Megatron and the fact that Stafford’s throws were right on the money.
those are the throws we were hoping to see this year. I remember that GB pre season game. Sigh.
Also, elite WR’s (Dez, Julio, Megatron) have just killed us past 12 months. Killed us. Like we had never heard of them before the game.
Billy
F-ing
Davis
when I think about this it just makes me more mad. After Dez last year it’s like, well we just aren’t good enough. Then you game plan and go, well let’s just try again. Why, b/c Nolan who never started before this year (or Rowe etc.) is going to shut them down?
Also it pisses me off that SB hero what’s his name undrafted free agent now moves around and takes the opponent’s best WR wherever he lines up. Undrafted rookie last year, mirroring the best WR all over the field this year. I think he makes juuuuust a little less than Maxwell.
Just a tad less.
Random shit: I’ve read some provocative posts here advocating the dismissal of Kelly, the retention of Kelly, the firing of Davis, the removal Kelly’s GM title, and a variety of other observations and recommendations. I thank one and all for playing. I think the role of a fan is an almost constant state of anxiety, and the fan’s state of mind – on a scale of realism to fantasy – seems to be largely contingent on the record. Losing tends toward more realistic posts and winning tends toward bloated hype. Both extremes feature timely exhibitions of spontaneous humor and citations of irony. That’s my impression.
I am inclined to write off the bombastic exhortations of self-announced geniuses, but they trigger some brilliant rejoinders, and all of it is fodder for a pondering mind. I have fulminated against Kelly, and expressed admiration for him, and despite a bunch of question marks, I find my thumb is still pointing up. I honestly don’t feel certain at all about the role or degree of influence that Bill Davis has on the outcome of most games, mainly because I think he’s following the preferences of Kelly. I do think the defensive coaching could be improved especially in the area of in-game tactics, but I also believe that there is still a learning curve for many of the new and young players that can undermine the DC’s options in a given game. One thing I believe does not get enough consideration: The absence of a legitimate stud edge rusher magnifies all of the woes of the defense. A play-maker at that position could have a miraculous impact on the secondary and the run defense. And I will end this run-on post with a nod to an old but proud owner: Jerry Jones. He may be odious in his penchant for hiring thugs and he may be disgustingly flamboyant, and sickeningly hypocritical, but he has built himself a grade A offensive line, and I would love for the Eagles front office to take note.
You mentioned the one thing, and a very important thing, that no one seems to mention during their rants…the lack of pass rush. It’s non existent at this point and can be very much to blame for the current problems this defense is having.
That line is so over hyped.
Huh?
That line is so over hyped…. I didn’t know you could mishear text.
I have no idea what line you are referencing.
Good post, you seem hinged today. If you look around the various Eagles and football sites, you will see a wide range of opinions. Igglesblitz generally represents the most optimistic active group that I’ve seen. We do have our resident genius here, of course, who unlike the flying saucer group at least has shown some flexibility of mind. It is really hard to predict much about Kelly, what with his rather extreme results in college, unusual philosophy, and sweeping personnel maneuvers. I would be a lot more sanguine about this team’s outlook if it built from the lines, if Kelly showed more flexibility in his coaching, if he learned that good teams hold on to their talent.
we might be on the more optimistic side but isn’t having hope about your sports team what makes it fun and entertainment. If I really thought every year that the coach (whoever it is) sucks and the team sucks, and I just want it to fail so I can say I’m right, that just doesn’t sound like a fun time to me. Either I’m wrong and personally hurt and they do well (but not win a SB), or I’m right and my team sucks. In the 1/25 -1/50 years they win the SB I guess I’m happy anyway (ok if I was wrong), but that doesn’t happen enough. That’s like red I lose, black I lose, but green maybe ok. WTF would we play that game for?
Yeah, I think different personalities just do “fan” different. Like there are some that expect the worst because they don’t want to be disappointed, and there’s others that expect to win each game and prefer going at it like that. It’s all good. For me, I go between the normal fan (I thought we were a Superbowl contender after preseason) and what I would call “reality-based”. I enjoy trying to look under the hood a little and try to understand why things happen. I have to admit that these last two years have disappointed me as I was pretty excited that Chip came here. But given that I came to the Eagles as a Randall fan, disappointment has come with the territory.
hey guys, flyboys have won 4 straight! at least someone in philly is doing some winning. that a boy matty read!
Fun to watch. I just need to see Hexy get some work done in clearing out some cap space and roster spots to get more of our young guys up here.
You known what is still grinding my gears? The fact we traded a 2&4 for Bradford when that should have been vice versa. Bradford pretty much has done about as much if not less than most water boys in the nfl. We should have got picks for Foles to go to Stl. The Shady trade was the worst trade ever. How do you trade a pro bowler/ nfl rushing champ still in their prime for an injured rookie and get 0 picks. We should have and could have got at the very least a 1 for shady and a mid tier player… But basically what ruined this team was the 2014 draft. 2 qb’s ripe for the picking Teddy B and Carr and we get Marcus Smith……… I’m scared what the eagles would give up for Johnny even as a free agent they will find a way to part with picks.
What about Foles in St. Louis and Bradford here makes you think that we should have gotten a 2&4 for Foles? Bradford has steadily gotten better, Foles has steadily gotten worse.
Yes, we gave a #2 for Bradford, and that might have been rich – but let’s not pretend that Foles was “the guy” and that we got fleeced. Bradford is way better than Foles, and it’s not even close. I can concede that we shouldn’t haven given a #2, but that’s about it. Bradford has played better with less than Foles.
Shady? He’s been hurt half the year, and he’s being used sparingly. So we’re paying $10 mill a year to a guy that isn’t getting the premier carries? Shady isn’t carrying the ball inside the RZ. And he’s been hurt half the season. He struggled here because he kept bouncing outside, but you want a 1st for that? That’s absurd.
Lastly, Foles (fools gold) lit it up in 2013. What would the fans/media think if Chip drafted a QB that had a stellar year? If you draft a QB in the 1st two rounds, you are expecting them to be the franchise QB. Hindsight is 20/20, but most people thought that Carr/Bridgewater weren’t going to be franchise guys.
I understand the frustration, but get a grip. Everyone is a draftnik after the fact – but those guys weren’t going to be top picks. Plus, Ags, Rowe, and Hicks are solid picks – moreso than taking a risk on QBs that you don’t think will be a franchise guy.
It’s fine to be mad at the coaching and the play over the season, but to “redraft” and say they should have done something is just silly.
1 – The fact the the origional report of that trade included draft pics coming the Eagles way.
2 – Persistent rumors that the Rams were going to cut Bradford anyway.
3 – When we only got Kiko back for Shady McCoy, many folks were quick to point out that Buffalo taking on that large salary was part of the “compensation” in the deal. So why didn’t that matter in the Bradford trade?
on point #3, i’ve always defended the money aspect of the Bradford trade because even though Foles was cheap, he wasn’t going to be cheap for long if he was “the guy” going forward, evidenced by the 2 year extension the Rams gave him this summer. Actually i can’t seem to find a definite figure&years on his contract. The contract is for 13 million guaranteed, with a 4 mil cap hit this season, 8 mil next year and 13 mil in 2017 but that is a voidable year which it looks like the Rams will do. Meanwhile Bradford has the 13 mil cap hit this year, but that’s it. It was pretty much a 1 year prove it deal and if he stinks you are not tied up with a long deal so you can seperate from him. It’s also not really that crazy of a number compared to other quarterbacks who are considered “franchise guys”. The problem now is that we are pretty much in the same boat as last year in not knowing is Sam is the guy moving forward, and just like with Foles, i’d say most fans want someone different. I don’t necessarily disagree, but i just want stability overall
I can see your point of view on that. We’ll have to see what Bradford winds up costing next year and/or what the Eagles total spending on the QB position is.
Teddy. B was regarded as the most pro ready qb in that draft class. The point about receiving a 2nd and a 4th for Foles is….prior to this trade, Foles was statistically better seeing as how he played and Sam had not. Even with injuries to himself and a depleted O-line he managed to win games. So at the time of the trade not now Foles should have been worth more compensation than Bradford. As far as Shady if bouncing outside and gaining 1300 yards is struggling, what do you call this nonsense we have now? We should have got more than a straight up trade for basically a 1hit wonder lb that’s my point. Currently Bradford is better than fools gold. Would you be mad if we had an extra 2&4 and Foles was suckin it up in Stl. I don’t think so.
we had foles coming off 27/2 so we missed on bridge and carr, got ms2 instead. which hurts even more.
nobody won the bradford trade, it would have been nice to get better compensation but gotta deal in realities. i also think we were trying to flip bradford as well but didn’t happen.
That’s what we get for putting all our eggs in one basket. Granted 27/2 was special…. What did we have besides Sanchez and Noodle arm? G. J? If I were GM I would have a taken a flyer on another young qb with upside just in the event 27/2 was a fluke. Pretty sure Howie was like Chip u can get M.Smith II in the 7th and his wrist will still fit your parameters. The past is the past and we are all suffering for it. I guess you guys are stronger than me because I def can’t take this garbage anymore.
how do you take a flyer on a guy in the first? we’ve spent the last 2 years taking flyers on DBs
We took a flyer on Smith! We are prob the only team in the league that had a 1st rd grade on him. He was also told he could have waited until a later round to get him. Hell Kelvin Benjamin would have been a better pick. All I’m saying is I would have taken a risk on a QB over a LB
i think we thought sea was going to jump up and take him. That said draft people thought he wasn’t terrible, a little high but whatever. The fact that he can’t contribute is more about him than where he was drafted.
Im toasted also dude
Yeah, I think I’d like to see SB put together something maybe, say, 1/8th as good as Foles 2013 before saying he’s a far better quarterback. He has shown flashes of goodness once in awhile, but this is a guy who lives off of potential like Jeff George used to. Potential means “ain’t done $hit yet”.
Foles 2013 season was an anomaly. Even Rodgers, Manning, and Brady didn’t have numbers like that – and he’s nowhere near them in quality.
Agreed. However, I read an analysis that concluded that bad players simply do not put up numbers and that Foles will turn out to be at least an above-average QB. There has never been a bad QB who has put up numbers like that. Perhaps Foles will be the first, or perhaps he will eventually find his way.
Maybe, but as with all things you have to let it play out. If Carson Palmer can do it in AZ, I think SB can do it here. Same thing with Foles, they got to let it play out.
You’re on drugs if you think the Shady trade wasn’t fair and equal.
Really I would like to know your reasoning. So you’re obviously impressed with kiko’s play this season? You would give up a perennial pro bowler for a 1hit wonder oft injured LB. I might be on drugs but they aren’t quite as good as yours.
Kiko played fine in the opneing game. He’s a very good player. He was picked 46th in his draft which is pretty high for ILB. He’s not a “one year wonder” like Jamar Chaney. He’s a top 10 ILB when healthy, who you got 3 years of paying him absolute peanuts.
Shady is a great talent. No one disputes that. But he was expensive and backs fall off a cliff right around his age.
You were trading an expensive RB about to fall off a cliff in a year or two for a stud young ILB who you were paying peanuts.
Its not Madden you weren’t getting a 1 for Shady.
It’s a good deal if it works out. It’s not a good deal if Shady plays better than the also expensive Murray here, and Kiko, who has missed 1.5 of 2.5 seasons, continues to sit or be rusty in every game. Notice that a lot of the injury-prone players Chip brought on board are again injured.
i dont think kiko was totally healed from the acl. problem too is when you’re injured you’re not practicing and for guys in a new system it can take a year to mesh.
The knee is currently messed up. I think it was probably ok but after the injury week 2 he’s playing on one leg now. Hopefully it sorts itself out in the offseason without surgery.
Fantastic debate d3fb and flyineagle anon and chotime.
I also have similar problem redolving this w chip and your debate.smart and well played w no insults is helpful and fantastic!!
Go eagles even though we suck.
That appears to be the case. I wonder if Chip will re-evaluate his apparent belief that formerly injured players are a good bet.
On a related note, we know that Gore turned down our offer; is it true that other players we targeted did not want to come here? If that is true, that is concerting, given we were coming off two 10-win seasons and optimism was so high. Imagine how hard it will be to attract talent now after what has happened.
Signing Murray with the cap savings was stupid. But that’s seperate from the trade itself and has more to do with them being a bit befuddled as what to do with the money they had saved for McCourtey.
I hear you, but I am not sure how valuable trying to disentangle these moves are. They add up to a bad and seemingly undisciplined offseason.
At the time of the Shady trade Demarco wasn’t a target. It wasn’t until we were left with extra cap room, Gore and Mccourty didn’t come that Murray became a target.
I thought it curious the Eagles put so much money into signing Murray. Seemed to show a lack of confidence in Mathews. Once they signed DeMarco, I was excited at the prospect of two-back sets.
I mean Mathews is a great back, but I think you don’t want to give him more than 150-200 carries. He just seems to always be getting hurt.
I wish they would’ve been more disciplined intheir cap management, drafted somebody on day 3 and gone with Mathews, Sproles, Polk, draft pick to get to 400 carries.
Mostert!
Gotta figure, Maclin and McCourty each turned down 10mil we were offering them.
.
Gore pulled out at the last minute
..
There were also reports of us trying to sign one of the most expensive Guards, Orlando Franklin..
..
We struck out trying to sign a bunch of our top targets, and all of the sudden we found ourselves without a RB when Gore pulled out..
..
today, the Demarco Murray deal doesn’t look like a great move, THATS for sure. But even when Ryan Mathews was lightening it up looking better than mathews, I knew there would be a time when we would need Demarco, since history suggests we ain’t getting 16 games out of Ryan Mathews…while the murray deal has been a dissapointment, he has shown us flashes of talent and ability that we can work with. It’s not ALL sliding to avoid corners. He has had some real nice physical runs, leaped over a few defenders and since we can’t get rid of his contract after this season. I’m hoping next season we get a much better year out of Murray for a.few reasons:
1) More comfortable in This scheme and different style of running the ball, maybe we actually łet him practice more in the offseason instead of being afraid to use his last summer.
2) an,Embarressed chip is forced to evolve more and tailor packages that take advantage of Demarcos strengths which will require running a bigger of the offense from under center to better utilized Murray
3) A Better OL in front of him. Run blocking at times tbis year has been some of the worst run blocking I have ever seen by the Eagles, LITERALLY!
4) hopefully an improved passing game next year
..
It’s not TOO LATE for Murray to be a good addition, but so far, it’s definitely dissapointing, and he will be a year older next year, so it’s far from a guarentee that those above listed factors will provide us a Better demarco Murray…
.
Curious to see what our RBs look like next year.. There is a real possibility that we won’t add ANY New RBs and bring these 4 back for one more year, or they could cut Sproles and replace him with Barner, or cut SPROLES and replace him with a rookie… Any way we slice it, probably won’t see much change in our RB room Next year
They couldn’t have relied on Mathews – he’s always hurt. Like now.
Mathews has been a complete bum in terms of missing games for his entire career.
I agree signing DeMarco was the biggest wtf moment for me. Looked like you saved all that money and hey lots of teams fill RB with cheaper options, it’s like a reliever in baseball. I don’t know if Gore turning them down threw Chip off his game or what. But that was a surprising move.
Regardless of the future of either players, at the time that trade was fair and equal. Right or wrong it was value for value.
1) you aremt seeing a healthy kiko. If he can put the knee injuries behind him, this will easily end up being his worst year as an eagle.
.
2) we traded for a linebacker on a rokie contract with only one year of NFL experience under his belt, not some veteran on an expiring contract. It’s pretty simple, if he can put the knee injury behind him, we will get seasons of quality play out of him, much better than anyghing he has shown in midnight green yet. If the knee injuries continue, we will never be able to count on him…but Kiko was acquired for more than just this one year, so it will be a while before we can really judge the trade… if KIKO was healthy and had this type of season, I would be worried and more inclined to agree with you, but it’s no secret that his knee hasn’t been rigjt and instead of shutting it down for the year, he is trying to warrior thru it. Gotta respect that, and hope he doesn’t suffer any set backs
.
3) obviously getting a team to take Shadys contract off our books was also important to chip.. Gonna take some time before we can really judge that trade. when Healthy, I expect KIKO to be one of the most talented players on our defense, and he only had one Year of pro mileage on his body when we traded for him.. So it’s not too different than trading Shady for a draft pick, getting rid of an expensive player for a kid with a few years left on a rookie contract, and we already know that this young Talent translates really well to the NF! Without having to worry about spending the draft pick we get in return for Shady on a bust… Kiko’s health will determine if it was a great trade or a bad trade… If he is done with serious leg injuries, Im very confident that we haven’t seen anything yet from KIKO… Unfortunately, like a lot of chips decision we have to worry about the injury element even more so than you already have to worry about any NFL player getting injured..
..
But what we are seeing from KIKO this year is nothing. He will either stay healthy and be one of our best defenders, or he will be injured and won’t be on the, field… Either way, the level of play we are aeeing this year is an ANOMOLY in my expectations..
Yeah, I don’t understand that either. Kiko looked like crap last week. He also looks skinny and weak. He seems like he needs to put on 15-20 pounds.
His listed weight is the same as Kendricks, who is four inches shorter and not exactly a bulky guy.
It’s almost amazing how many people still say it wasn’t.
Look on the bright side guys. We could draft Jake Butt to replace Celek. Butt could try to block Cox in practice.
That’s what she said.
Although the name is funny; I can’t endorse adding too much scUM to this roster.
Sam Bradford is 7th in the league in least bad passes.
http://www.sportingcharts.com/nfl/stats/quarterback-bad-pass-percentage/2015/
That encouraging. Funny how an “MVP Candidate” is the 2nd worst at it in the league of all qualified passers at 30th.
I might be in the vast minority here, but I don’t mind Bradford back here on a 1 year deal next year if that allows us to invest heavily in upgrading the line.
If you can’t find your guy in the draft and the coaches don’t prefer another vet I’m down. I will expect another shit year but I just don’t want a long term investment on the wrong guy.
What solid vets are available?
peyton, keap, rgiii, backups
Technically r3 and Colin are under contract tho. I wouldnt mind getting them both in here on try out camp contracts. Is Peyton’s up?
not a FA but they can save $19m not bringing him back
I agree. Maybe he can have offseason surgery to uncross his eyes.
Weird how percentage of good passes doesn’t seem to correlate to winning at all. In fact, it seems almost the opposite…
Wilson, Bridgewater, and Palmer are all very high on the list and those are playoff teams. Oakland and Atlanta are close. The only true clunker team in the top 6 is represented by Rivers, but that team being terrible is far from his fault.
But I get your general drift.
Yeah I guess when you throw 60 passes a game you might have a few bad ones.
The same site claims Jordan Matthews only has 3 drops, and Demarco Murray leads the Eagles with 5 drops.
http://www.sportingcharts.com/nfl/stats/drops/2015/
Sounds legit.
How good of a sign would this be?

does anyone now (I know it’s early) really think Goff is there at 9?
You’re totally correct that we’re way too early to know who can be there at 9 or not. Goff, as you can already see with some guys on here, generates some interesting arguments on where he should be drafted. In this particular mock, the Niners took Lynch at 7.
We’ll have to see how brutal the scouts get with the QBs as the season ends and they go into the draft hype.
ok but I kind of meant the first QB (if that’s him) hardly ever lasts that long with so many teams needing one. He would REALLY have to be in a different tier to be passed by while a team takes a position that is half 20% as important. BPA be damned.
Hard to tell who will be drafting early and need a QB.
Titans and Jags are all set at QB. I’d assume San Diego is all good there as well. So are Cowboys, Lions, Saints, Dolphins, and Ravens.
Figure San Fran, Cleveland, and the Rams are the teams besides us in the 2/3/4 win group who definitely need a QB.
remember when we were upset that Kendricks might be included in the Mariota trade.
“I” was not in the group of “we” that were going to be upset about that. I’ve been off of team Kendricks since his poor game vs. San Diego in coverage and his excessive milking of injury time tables.
You don’t like Kendricks? Dude is like a shark in the water, man!
If you had one HOF vote: Tra Thomas or Peters?
Peters because he destroyed that Redskin D-line man after he took a cheap shot on Foles. I love the look of fear in the DL’s face.
I think I tend to lean that way too. More so because of how mean and physical he is. His pass blocking is probably a hair below TT, but run blocking is a good clip above.
My thoughts also, TT was fantastic at covering the blind side but wasn’t so good at getting movement going forward (especially in goal-line situations I seem to recall). Peters can do it all. And Peters was a TE.
Peters, by a mile. Tra was dysfunctional in the run game for most of his career and was never as good of a pass blocker as Peters.
I disagree. Thomas was a better pass blocker than Peters. Peters was a better run blocker, and notice I said “was” even though he’s still playing. He hasn’t shown it this year and if he makes the pro bowl again it will only be because of name recognition.
Peters, and it’s not even close
Thomas was great but not HoF great. I don’t think there’s any doubt Peters is worthy of Canton.
I was thinking that same thing myself the other day 🙂
Tra Thomas was probably one of the most underrated Eagles of the modern era. Runyan got all the fan love.
I would probably vote for Thomas but as I think we all know, neither are getting in.
If he keeps the system in place – the constant dumping off players and replaced with Oregon alumni, we’ll be at the top……of the NFL draft.
Easily Peters…I got love and respect for Tra and Runyan, But JP is the highest level Offensive Lineman I have ever seen play for the Eagles..
..
At his best, Shawn Andrews was also a bad mofo, but for a Guard we drafted, he didn’t play even close to enough to have been worth a 1st round pick. He retired like a decade ago, and Wilfork is still playing today… Maybe if he was a running back, we could consider the few years we got out of Andrews a good pick, but hall of Fame Guards play into their 30’s….If Andrews had the mental strength to match his physical ability, and played about 5 years more than he did, Shawn Andrews would probably he a hall of Famer
Brett has 1 ring from the 80s thanks to Reggie White.. made himself.millions and who isnt sick of th dude
No f in thanks to endure watching another farve like dude get rich and only come close and end every season with an interception. . But lifes great for him.
Not a fan
I’m with you. The guy had a great career in total, but the last bunch of years were terrible. I hated the way the media fawned over him, the whole “The ol’ gunslinger” crap. Gunslinger, my butt, he was an interception machine. Plus, what a betrayal of the fans to play for your greatest rival.
I’m sort of with you guys too. As a kid i loved watching him play, but as i matured i got sick of the adoration from the media, and he was careless with the football. Plays like he had against the Eagles in the playoffs where he just threw a lob to Dawkins were becoming far too frequent. Then towards the end of his Packer days when he couldn’t decide if he was going to retire or not, and part of me thinks he actually reveled in all the drama over him, i just totally turned on him and have not liked him since. I think during 2008? he retired and Mike Mccarthy named Rodgers the starter….then like a month later Favre decided he wasn’t retiring and acted like the job should just come back to him and he hadn’t even been playing well. It was unfair to Rodgers and to the team. I was pretty happy that GB won a SB without him, even though they beat us to get there and was equally happy watching him throw a pick the year before to blow a chance to win the SB.
I admired the way Rodgers handled himself while he was the heir-apparent. It must have been hard at times but he always acted with class.
Was it the media or was it just… John Madden? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MX0nuEuuKIk
lol…..when Madden used to gush over him was when i actually liked him….it was the stuff after madden retired from broadcasting. All the “he plays the game like a kid out there, he’s just having fun”. All the while he was costing his team games by making dumb decisions but since he was Brett Favre, nobody said a bad word about him. Then the constant media coverage about him retiring or not retiring was nauseating. And his pouting while holding press conferences regarding his retirement were even worse. I remember one time he held a press conference to make the announcement on whether he was going to play the next year, and when he showed up he scoffed at everybody there and acted like he didn’t know what the commotion was all about…..and HE is the one that called the press conference!
For awhile there, Brett was maybe the most popular person in America. I could see getting a big head.
The only thing that comes close in annoyance was the way John Madden called Spurier “the ol’ ball coach” when he was with the skins.
One bullseye after anothet.
hey, NO ONE had more fun playing than he did. That must be true b/c I heard it 1,000 times.
I think that was the drugs. He would have had more fun bowling or playing ping pong than anyone else too.
When you say 80s… how old are you, man?
almost same birthdate as Reggie exactly . what year was his 1 lousy f in ring amonst the millions he made .. oh 93 yes I remember my girlfriend that year..my dad died then also. ok I was off by late 80s ..was trying to be emphatic that it was long agoooo
1997. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Bowl_XXXI
John Madden fell in love ..
OT: Damn, Aaron Hernandez getting into trouble in prison. That is one scary dude.
Who did he kill now? Id put that psycho to good use and lock him in a cage with 20 rapists, child molestors, and Isis members
He had a shank in his cell.
Lol it would be a bigger story if he DIDNT have a shank in his cell… Whacko
Makes me miss the days of when Shady has some skanks on his bus.
Prison guards need to start secretly dosing hernandez with Estrogen and femle growth Hormones..
Nice.
tommy ‘chip’ lawlor once again wins the media moron award for stupidest chip kelly story….’its a good sign that chip was happy mid week’? wtf? eagles fans don’t f-ing care if that fat little fraud is happy…he sucks, stop kissing his fat irish butt and be a friggin man and hope they lose out and that ahole gets fired.
The weather in Twin Falls, Idaho today is 37 degrees and mostly sunny, with a brisk wind blowing east southeast at 13 MPH.
How about you go take an extension course in proper use of the English language.
how bout you just go to bed before mommy comes home
I don’t care for grammar corrections either but your comment means what, that she is too young or female for her opinion to matter? That’s stupid, so maybe I’m not interpreting the point right. We can insult each other without making the very few women here feel like they aren’t welcome.
Aaron is actually a sock puppet for Dr. Feelgood, so I don’t know what point it is trying to make.
just having fun, smile, its ok
Agree w your assessment. . Made me think that chip wss happy because he inked a college coaching gig..
But no smashing the great tommmy lawlor. Thats a massive violation .. you need to give us 50 pushups and run a lap
I do not concur with your assessment.
Is Temple serious today? Greg F-ing Ward?
COME ON MAN!
To quote Tommy
“Ugh.”
So disappointing. I was hoping to see Temple in a really big bowl game.
Now I have to settle on Villanova owing the Greater Philadelphia area a title run this spring.
That ain’t happenin
Then F Jay Wright as well.
Haha!
Does anybody know what type of BS “illness” Jamie Collins had for the Pats? Their refusal to give out any info on the situation has me believing that he has AIDS.
Wouldmt he retire if that was the case? Would he even be allowed on a football field with aids? Bleeding isn’t exactly uncommon on the football field..
..
Considering how Cases of Cancer have been handled, with guys like Berry immediately taking a break, from football, I can’t imagine it could be somethng too serious for the Pats to eventually łet Collins return,,,
..
Id bet on somethimg like Mono, I guess..
Something with his stomach and he lost some weight; I just want a specific diagnosis.
So he has AIDS until they provide medical info otherwise.
He’s sick to his stomach of Brady, just like the rest of us…
That could indeed be the case!
Then again, hiding an Aids diagnosis to try and win football games is so Bill Bellichik lol
#thePatriotWay
I think you mean Gronkowski. He’s the one that was bathing in Charlie Sheen’s sloppy seconds.
Except we know why he’s out; a knee injury. This “illness” garbage is too vague.
I know curiosity makes you want to know, but clearly it is a bit more serious than your average cold, so part of me doesn’t blame him for wanting to maintain some privacy about his health.
That is an interesting scenario. Magic Johnson played basketball with HIV didnt he? Even if someone gets a direct needle stick from someone with HIV the chance you will contract the virus is less than .3%. Also you can recieve AZT after the stick to basically obliterate the chances of getting the virus. I would assume a bleed wouldnt be much risk at all but still a risk. HIV is extremely fragile outside the human body and Im not even sure how long its viable outside the body.
We’ll find out the next time Collins gets cut on the field.
yes Magic did. And that was way back when folks didn’t know as much.
Maybe that’s why Magic averaged 60 that year. Just kidding.
Pats Pulpit says “virus” with no detail.
Yeah; that’s f-ing lame. The lack of the specific condition is maddening.
I was just at a gig and met a guitarist who had been sick for awhile. Some kind of antibiotic-resistant bacterial thing. *shudder* I miss the good old days when penicillin worked.
I believe Alabama could rush for over 200 yds against the eagles vaunted D
I believe they couldnt.
Not to pump up “Aaron”, but I have a bad feeling that our run D lets us down tomorrow.
Some pro coach (can’t remember whom), I think a baseball guy, said the coach’s job is to relax, loosen guys up under pressure and when the chips are down, and keep the guys on the ball when things seem easy. Kelly is doing his routine job in this way perhaps. Every Eagle is feeling the pressure, and there’s a likelihood (that’s already occurred) of them tightening up and playing scared, on their heels. When you make a few good plays, suddenly a team gets confident, but then they could be outperformed by the opposition digging in.
Manziel has played well on the field this year. Off the field, he is apparently aware he needs to grow up and clean up his act, but I don’t have any inside information.
How’s Florida’s Treon Harris a QB for any NCAA team even as a backup?
Good question.
I like to make fatalistic Chip Kelly comments/jokes, but I would like to see Chip finish out his contract. I like him and hope he will figure stuff out better going forward.
And, in the end, it’s not like he’s responsible for destroying the Eagles’ uninterrupted string of Super Bowl victories.
your last point reminds me of the Sixers. What, it’s the beginning of year 3 and we aren’t a winning team yet? As if they didn’t suck (or at best be mediocre with no hope of sniffing a title) for 14 years. So instead of 8 wins at this point we have 1 is that really much different?
The only problem I have with the Sixers’ plan is that they haven’t dropped the ticket prices much lower. I’m trusting the process, but they are saving money by not picking up veteran journeymen who could make the team more competitive so I think they should throw a little back towards the fans.
yep that’s fair. Ticket prices I assume are a drop in the bucket for their revenue anyway compared to TV etc., so you would think that wouldn’t even hurt much at all.
And they raised prices last minute when Kobe announced his retirement. Josh Harris needs to die in a helicopter crash for that stunt…..and his helicopter stunt.
yeah, that was a dick move.
It’s 2015 every major company engages in price discrimination
I think you’re going to get the 4th year, but the way stuff works is that the end of year 4 they’ll either extend him or fire him. Good owners (that aren’t megalomaniac DUI pill heads) don’t let a coach go into a season in the last year of his deal.
But Irsay…..oh I get it.
To your first part, I think Chip did make some mistakes and this year wasn’t just bad luck. But I remember Lurie likes him (and I believe it too) b/c he’s a wicked smart dude re: football. So my hope is he improves.
I do wonder if we just over estimated the talent. On O, where are we even above average? The WR’s are not good, the OL has not been good, no for QB, RB…maybe? I hope it’s because Bradford needs more time, Kelce is better than this etc. But the O he put out there is not good. The WR’s kind of really suck.
The D: our corners are just not good enough. They are likely better than last year but that isn’t saying much. Our DL is good but the lack of a pure rusher who just can’t be stopped sometimes really hampers us. The ILB positions which was our biggest strength seems not so much now.
Our kicker is not good. So overall, I just wonder.
agree. no pass rush makes our DBs look worse than they are. We don’t have enough depth to be a coverage team. i’ve said it before this is my number one reason to switch to a 43, gives best rushers ability to rush. plus you can find good 43 rushers in later rounds but you’re not going to find a 34 olb w/ pass rushing skills in later rounds.
Exactly. Fire the GM.
Desired outcomes for remaining games this weekend
Jets over Giants
Cards over Rams – I need Arizona to help block Scam potentially getting to a Super Bowl
Falcons over Bucs – Rapist Winson can lose again
Seattle over Vikings – Seattle getting hot down the stretch is another opportunity to keep Scam from advancing in the playoffs.
Texans over Bills – I’d love to see O’Brien on a playoff run; especially if it keeps the Steelers out.
Ravens over Dolphins – But Dan Campbell is soooooooooo tough, right? Except he’s from Texas, played college in Texas, and played mostly for the Giants and Cowboys in the NFL; NONE OF THAT IS ANYWHERE NEAR PHILLY………..he’s not tough.
Bengals over Browns – I’m enjoying Cincy this year
Titans over Jags – I’d like to see Mariota win a few more
Niners over Bears – Kaepertrash is gone, so I don’t have to root against San Fran any more and we need the Niners to finish with a better record than the Eagles for Goff purposes
Broncos over Chargers – Denver is kind of fun to watch with Oswiler.
Chiefs over Raiders – Enjoying a Chiefs playoff run and the further proof that Alex Smith is better than Kaepertrash……and a Chiefs playoff run keeps the Steelers out.
Saints over Panthers – duh
Colts over Steelers – I enjoy the Steelers fans having to be miserable.
Washington over Cowboys – I don’t like Washington, but I cannot stomach potentially seeing the Giants make the playoffs.
Jets over Giants–See KC game
Cards over Rams–Fire Jeff Fisher
Atl over bucs–Agree
Vikes over Seahags–Watching them lose is fun. Frazier hates Fisher
Tex over Bills–Agree
Phins over Suggs–that franchise deserves all of the karma.
Stripes over solids–Agree
9ers over bears–Agree
Broncos over Bolts– I like Colorado
Chiefs over Raiders–Andy Chip Super Bowl
Boys over Racist–See KC.
Also from @PFF: The Eagles’ defense has missed a combined 20 tackles in their last two games.
Really liking both these CB’s for Iowa
pretty sure Gus Johnson just had an orgasm on that Iowa touchdown pass
This Mich St. / Iowa game is good tv.
i wanted Iowa to win…..i have some unreasonable hatred of Michigan St. for some reason
I have no rooting interest, but this was a well fought game.
Iowa has had trouble getting that guy down all night
Yeah they looked a bit gassed on that last drive.
UNC just got hosed, recovered an onside kick only for it to be negated for a phantom offside call
That was absolute horseshit.

I think chips problem is his own ego. So him acting like nothing is wrong is a problem to me.
