A Good Sign?

Things have not been fun in Eagleland recently. There was the loss to the Bucs. Then tons of negativity. There was the loss to the Lions. Then even more negativity.

Until today.

Maybe I’m nuts, but Chip Kelly seemed…happy…at his press conference.

Chip joked with reporters. He smiled several times. He was still snarky with some questions, but more in a playful way than bitter or angry. This may not seem like a big deal, but it struck me as funny how different he seemed than any time I’ve seen him in the last several weeks.

NFL coaches set the tone for their team. My favorite example of this is something Jimmy Johnson did back in 1993. Dallas was the defending Super Bowl champs. They were about to play SF in a rematch of the previous NFC title game. Jimmy sensed his players were nervous. On the night before the game he called a local radio station and told them Dallas would win the game. He told them to print his statement in big, bold letters…WE WILL WIN. Sure enough, Dallas won. Jimmy’s proclamation gave his players confidence and their nerves went away.

I don’t know if Chip sensed something with his team that caused him to put on a happy face. Or maybe he was legitimately in a good mood. Maybe he had some delicious chocolate pudding for lunch. That’s usually enough to make anyone smile.

Whether real or fake, it was good to see Chip in a, dare I say, chipper mood. The Eagles are in the middle of a 3-game losing streak. But you can’t brood forever. At some point, you need to let go of the misery and move forward. The Eagles can’t undo the past. They have to focus on playing better football. One way to do that is for the players to start feeling good about themselves.

If you carry the baggage of past games onto the field Sunday, it is going to be an ugly game. Let that go. Play with some emotion and some confidence. Have fun. Chip says that emotion follows execution and he’s right to a certain extent. But you can also help matters by having the right state of mind during the week and when you take the field.

Maybe I’m making too much of a simple mid-week PC, but I thought it was good to see Chip smiling and joking. I think the players need to see that. A coach is at his best when he can be himself. I think of Chip as a positive guy. I think of him as someone more likely to smile than have a scowl on his face.

The proof will be in the pudding. Does the team play better on Sunday? Do they have a different vibe than the previous couple of weeks? Do they, dare I say, win? I just want to see the Eagles go out and play well. The Dolphins loss was a sloppy affair. The last 2 weeks were disastrous. I want this team to go make some plays so that I can have a smile on my face on Sunday.

*****

Apparently Adam Schefter had a note about the Eagles being interested in Johnny Manziel. BGN has the details.

Obviously this would be something for the offseason, but nothing will surprise me. Mark Sanchez has proven he’s not a guy you want starting. Sam Bradford hasn’t lit the world up. Manziel has played better this year. He’s shown real flashes of ability.

The problem is that Johnny Off-Field keeps getting in the way of Johnny Football. The obvious comment is that he doesn’t come close to fitting Chip’s culture. But you have to remember that the Eagles might be desperate for QB help in the offseason. And a change of scenery can make all the difference in the world. Brett Favre was a party animal in Atlanta in 1991 and couldn’t get close to the field. He then went to Green Bay. He drank beer, but hung out with teammates and developed into a Hall of Fame QB. He never turned into a saint, but he became a reliable person and player.

Get Manziel out of Cleveland and put him into a better environment. That might help him to turn things around, on and off the field.

Chip recruited Manziel heavily at Oregon, and even had him as a “commit” for a short time in 2010. JFF allegedly flipped to A&M when he realized Mariota was better. But it’s safe to say Kelly likes his capabilities.

  2. 2 Greg Tulino said at 1:25 AM on December 4th, 2015:

The Eagles have absolutely nothing to lose in this game Sunday. Absolutely zero pressure. Nobody is giving them a snowball’s chance in hell to win this game. We should play loose, aggressive, fast and without a fear in the world. We should take chances and see if we can shock the world! Imagine how a win in this scenario could change the outlook of the future of this team. Maybe it’s the turning point of the franchise? If they lose nobody will care and it’s expected. You never know!!! 🙂

  3. 3 laeagle said at 3:07 AM on December 4th, 2015:

wouldn’t change the future. It’s one game. But it would change the present outlook. And make a lot of people feel better before the crushing divisional losses looming on our schedule.

    I kid, I kid…

  4. 4 bdbd20 said at 7:22 AM on December 4th, 2015:

That’s what I was thinking. Players and coaches are probably pretty loose right now. For the first time in a while, they are the underdog. Bradford and Peters appear to be healthy. Gronk and Edelman are out.

  5. 5 Kevin, uncautiously optimistic said at 10:49 AM on December 4th, 2015:

I agree. Ironically, all of the negative talk has put the team in a no-lose situation. Seriously, get blown out 44-2 (Brady merciful steps out of the endzone) and what changes from present?

Step up, play loose and fast and either do a Rocky 1 (take the champ to the distance) or pull the upset and the rhetoric changes.

The key is if Kelly and the team’s leadership were able to develop a ‘foxhole’ mentality this week… an us against the world type thing… If that is the case, the NFL might regret taking this off the nationwide feed.

hey, just got home from work and watched the GB/Det highlights and have a couple questions:
    1. That sure as hell wasn’t a facemask, but would that have been an illegal hands to the face penalty anyway?
    2. Was Calvin Johnson in on the hail mary play? I couldn’t see if he was.
2a. If Johnson wasn’t in on that play, why the hell wasn’t he? He’s probably the #1 guy in the league you’d want as an extra safety to knock a jump ball like that down.

  23. 23 Jamie Parker said at 3:47 AM on December 5th, 2015:

    I had some questions too:
    1. How did the 4 yd catch to Tate on that last Detroit possession take 6 secs but the 29 yd pass only take 4? Clock should have gone to the 2 min warning and Detroit should have been in victory formation.
    2. Does Detroit really think their NT is one of their best pass rushers?
    3. Why is their best pass rusher, Ziggy Ansah, who’s 2nd in the league in sacks, in coverage on that last play, 15 yards downfield covering…no one? WTF?

  24. 24 Duracell said at 5:56 AM on December 4th, 2015:

I have it on good authority that Manziel wasn’t even on the Eagles draft board. Now, maybe if he gets cut, it’s a low risk move like Tebow. Or maybe with the way this season has gone, Chip has changed his mind. But I think this is a case of a ‘reporter’ throwing something against the wall to see if it will stick.

  25. 25 Insomniac said at 6:55 AM on December 4th, 2015:

I’ll be disgusted if he brings him in. You passed on other talented individuals that might not even have issues as bad as Manziel to protect that “culture” you built up. Why dismantle it now because it’s low risk? La’el Collins was as low as a risk can be in the 7th round but you know what? Lets take a chance on a drunken idiot that will never get what it takes to be a professional

  26. 26 Forthebirds said at 10:38 AM on December 5th, 2015:

The Eagles are more likey to draft a QB in rounds 1 or 3 than sign Manziel. I would rather they give Bradford another contract if they can get him at a reasonable price and a relatively short term.

  27. 27 Ankerstjernen said at 6:05 AM on December 4th, 2015:

I don’t mean to be an ass about this, but if your team is playing historically bad and the coach appears to in good spirits about it, I honestly don’t know if that makes me feel much better. I’d probably prefer if he was pissed off.

Still had Olsen at TE (quietly one of the better ones in the game) and better talent at RB right now than Brady has this week.

Seems to have become pretty fashionable the past week or two to say that Cam is the MVP so far and it is such BS. Cam’s numbers are inferior to his own numbers in ’13 let alone stiff what Brady has done. Just the haters looking to stick it to Brady.

The Patriot Act has allowed New England to tap phone lines. This transcript of a pre-press conference phone call explains Kelly’s mood:

Bill: So, I told my guys that if the last two opponents put up 90 points on you, we better put up at least 90 as well.

    Chip: I appreciate the warning.

Bill: Well, you seem like a decent coach, I hate to kill you.

Chip: And you seem like a decent coach. I hate to die.

Bill: You are using a up tempo spread, you must expect me to counter with ball control.

Chip: I would consider it appropriate, considering the unpredictable weather.

Bill: True, unless you have a magical QB, which I do.

Chip: I admit you are better than me.

Bill: Then why are you smiling?

Chip: Because I know something you don’t know.

    Bill: And what is that?

  62. 62 ChoTime said at 9:14 AM on December 4th, 2015:

By the way, it has been repeated that DeMarco is worn out and Kelly was dumb to sign a back with 400 carries last year due to overuse. The overuse thing has been debunked years ago–there is no magic number of ideal carries for a RB. His going downhill is probably due to bad OL play and simple regression to the mean (maybe scheme).

  63. 63 BobSmith77 said at 11:37 AM on December 4th, 2015:

No but it isn’t surprising that Murray has struggled a bit for multiple reasons this year. It has helped either that the screen pass has almost completely dried up too.

I do put a piece of this on Murray though including his effort a few times this year. There were 1, maybe 2, games where I thought he rand with nearly the same kind of determination to pick up extra yards especially after contact. His teammates have to be seeing the same thing too especially the guys on this team who played against him twice the past year or two.

Murray has been my least favorite Eagles’ player this year besides maybe Austin (who should have been cut a month ago).

But it’s even MORE IMPORTANT when we are talking about the QB position. it’s the most important and hardest position in sports, that REQUIRES leadership qualities.. If a guy can’t handle adversity in San Fran or Cleveland, he stands NO CHANCE in this City. Facing Adversity is guaremteed in this sport. As we are seeing right Now, it can be even tougher in THIS CITY, with THIS FANBASE and THIS media market..
    ..
We have better and Classy playërs today than manziel and KAp who are currently struggling with facing adversity in THIS CITY, like malcolm Jenkins, Fletcher COX, BG, hall of Famer Jason Peters… And I ain’t talking about QBs.
    ..
This is EASILY one of the Toughest cities to play in, and QB is easily the toughest and most important positin in sports.. How in the world can anyone even consider Guys who struggled miserably to handle playng Qb in San Fran and Cleveland, in THIS MUCH TOUGHER, much more DEMANDING CITY?
    ..
You can’t even consider them as option in THIS city… And I haven’t even mentioned how Horrible they have been on the field yet lol…

1)Average to below average in terms of repetive accuracy for starting QBs
    .
    2) Below Average to complete failure in leadership duties that come with that position
    .
    3) Average to below Average in QB Intelligence
    ..
What the hell is there to even like? QBs that are TERRIBLE in just about every single area except for their ability to run fast and execute Zone reads? Are we fucking nuts?… How can anyone see the adversity our guys are facing right now, how they are struggling with fans and media, and even consider Kap and Johnny as the Solutions to our mess? Have we lost our minds?
    ..
I can’t Name 5 starting QBs in the NFL that would be worst options to play QB in THIS CITY.. If I had to list the 5 worst QB optins to play in THIS demanding City, I would say (In no specific order)

    1) Johnny Manziel (you think Jahlil Okafor is gettng trouble in old city? Lol)
    .
    2) KAPERNICK… A “leader” who stopped speaking to teammates and coaches during tôugh times earlier in the season
    .
    3) Rg3
    ..
    4) Geno Smith
    ..
    5) Jay Cutler

You have to be insane to think RG3, Manziel, KAp, Geno or Jay Cutler can handle playing the MOST IMPORTANT position in Philly Sports, and be asked to lead us thru adversity in THIS market…
    ..
Not Every good player is cut from the right cloth to be able to play in This City..
    ..
change of scenery can be a great thing for playërs, but we would have to be crazy to think we can trust kids who couldnt be trusted in Cleveland and San Fran, especially at the most memtally demanding and most important position in sports…..
    ..
Struggling in New York had Sanchez Prepared to be able to handle this city… As someone who is at peace with the fact that LURIE won’t fire chip after this year, there is little that chip could do to make me lose respect for his ability than if his solution to this seasons mess is to bring in someone like KAp, Manziel, GENO, Cutler or RG3…, you can’t even think of those mutts as a QB of the Philadelphia Eagles… Id rather go into a season with Sanchez a rookie And THAD Lewis..
    ..
You Think chips Charechter CULTURE failed NOW, lol this is nothing compared to what would happen with kAp or Manziel as the QB of this passionate, demanding, City, starving for a Super Bowl

“Philly Voice’s Jimmy Kempski doesn’t expect 2014 first-round OLB Marcus Smith back with the Eagles in 2016.”

Smith has yet to make a tackle since being selected 26th overall in last year’s draft. All of the Eagles’ first-round targets were plucked off the board right ahead of them in 2014, and they panicked and took Smith in a big-time reach. He hasn’t panned out in the least bit and may quickly be falling out of the league. Look for
the Eagles to try and trade him for anything in the offseason.

If we cut MSII there better not be an article from JK asking why we couldn’t get value. Although how he hasn’t recorded a solo tackle i’m not sure.

Not trying to sound like a know it all, because im not at all, but i thought that was really obvious based on reports of him and Chip not getting along during the season and then what sealed it for me was the day after they lost to the Saints and the players were cleaning out their lockers they had the media in there and Desean brought up his contract outta nowhere and i remember an OL, possibly Kelce, shooting him a look like “seriously, bro?”

I only ask because i think the majority of commenters here are obvious die-hard fans and converse pretty much every day and i wasn’t sure if people here saw the writing on the wall or not.

Hahaha we,are so bad, we are starting to be connected to Manziel. If that ain’t Rock Bottom, I don’t know what Is… The Only jackass since the movie,”Friday” who got fired on his day off..
    .
Finally he earned enough trust for his coaches to let him play out the season, and this donkey gets himself demoted to 3rd string during a friggin bye week
    ..
As If connecting us to Kapernick wasn’t bad enough… can you imagine KAPERNICK, a QB who stopped talking to teammates and coaches because of adversity. Playing in THIS MARKET? Don’t make me laugh.. Kapernick is failing miserably on and off the field, crumbling because he can’t handle the bad times in San Francisco…. Can you imagine how KAPERNICK would be acting if he was our QB during this 3game stretch when our media, fans, and the losing is starting to get to guys that have exhibited by stronger CHarevhter than KAPERNICK…. Chip kelly happy at a press Confrence, isn’t good enough,of a sigń to make up for what we heard from high cHarechter guys like Jenkns, Fletcher Cox BG, Jason Peters this week..
    ..
If our players are struggling with the adversity In this high strung market, how the, fuck can anyone even say Kapernicks name as a potential option to play the most important leadership position in all of sports? that the guy you want to lead us out of the hard times? he has Failed so Miserably in his leadership duties that come with playing QB and cashing Big money QB checks, that his behavior, and LACK of cHarechter eliminates him as a QB option in THIS CITY, and I HAVENT even touched on his terrible QB play… Are people really this batshit crazy, that it has gotten to a point where people are talking about QBs who are way down the bottom of the starting QB rankings in terms of Football IQ, way down the rankings in terms of Charechter and Leadership, way down the rankings in terms of repetitive accuracy.. Yet because these fuckin Bums run fast, people actually consider them possibke answers?
    ..
I don’t know what’s worse, KAp and Manziels QB play, their QB brain, or their lack of Charechter and leadership…. I have Heard some STUPID SHIT as an eagle fan in the Past, but it really dpesmt get much dumber than suggesting we fix this mess by bringing horrible QBs, that are below average in just about EVERY area except running fast..
    ..
KAPERNICK and Manziel are TERRIBLE suggestion for any team, but in THIS MARKET, you have to be slow to think these kids wouldn’t be a complete disaster in THIS CITY, with us fans, and THIS MEDIA!! .
    .
If we think they handled themselves terribly in San Fran and Cleveland, what’s going to happen in philly when we go 4-7 and the sky is falling, and Media is calling for EVERYONEs heads on a platter every day, for the rest of the season
    ..
QB is the most important and hardest positipn in sports… You stRting QB has to be a LEADER to some degree. McNabb Wasnt the greatest leader, which was probably a limitation, but he want a horrible leader…
    ..
You have to be insane to think KAPERNICK or Manziel can play THAT position in THIS city… That’s just crazy..
    ..
mark Sanchez sucks. But when we brought him in, at least we knew that he had experience in a similar market, and was able to handle the bad times in such a tough market…. KAPERNICK can’t handle losing in San Fran, wtf is going to happen if he has a yeàr like this one in THIS CITY?
    ..
Hnestly, Id rather have Tim Tebow….. I am resigned to the fact that Lurie isn’t going to fire chip after this year and im fine with it, It’s the Right move,.. But if Chip comes to LURIE and says that the solution to this mess is trading for KAp or Manziel, LURIE has to tell him “GET THE FUCK OUT OF HERE, NOW!!!! Do Not pass go, Do Not Collect $200. Just GTFO here!!
    ..
I simply can’t believe this is true. I can’t believe a coach who valued Charechter and Leadership would be considering Two QB’s who can’t be trusted as Leaders, Who DEFINTELY can’t be Trusted in THIS CITY.. Below average football Intelligenve, below average accuracy.. Lol Media and San Fran fans were excited at the beginning of the season because it looked like KAp was finally able to look to his 2nd READ… LOL a high paid, veteran QB, so bad that people were excited about finally seeing the field enough to not just look at his first read.. Like are we kidding?
    ,.
Johnny Manziel in Old city every weekend? Are people fucking Nuts?
    ..
Chip ISNT my favorite person these days, but I have to respect Chip enough to Think that the interest in KAp and Manziel can’t possibly be True.. It can’t be true

I do not see any validity behind the Manziel story. As for Kaepernick and any of the other QBs that have been linked to the Eagles for next offseason, let me ask you this. Can Kaepernick/RG3/Rookie/Insert any other name here, be any worst the Bradford or Sanchez? I know you have a love for Bradford but honestly at this point he is what he is and that is a mediocre QB. To me if Chip truly plans to stick around and build this team up then he might as well draft a rookie and let Bradford walk and do not acquire any of those QBs.

I would so much rather go into next year with Bradford, Sanchez and THAD Lewis, than to make an even bigger Mess with jokers like Rg3, Johnny, Kap,GENO or Cutler..
    ..
And this DOESNT even take into account that Im not even close to being ready to quit on Bradford…
    ..
Lol name one thing Johnny or KAp can do well besides running fast and being good at zone Reads? You think Bradfords bad? KAPERNICK is like a 5yr veteran with a lot of playoff experience and he is so underdeveloped as a QB, that San Fran fans were literally Excited because early tbis year It started to look like kAp was finally starting to be able to get to his second and 3rd reads LOL, you THINK BRADFORDS bad, at least he can see the friggin fields at least he has some clue about what defenses are doing…
    ..
And even if you are someone who looks at it like “Can it really be any worse than bradford”, THATS still dysfunctional. Chamge for the sake of change… YES, I’d so much prefer continuing to work with SAM to get him more comfortable in this offense, instead of chamge for the sake of chaNge,and replace SAM with someone I already know isn’t the Answer

Why is the discussion about the Eagles not framed in such a way? They lost two games with a backup-caliber QB, and in both games could not get anything going on offense and kept handing the ball back to the other team in what seems like historically fast 3-and-outs.

It can be blamed on the safety for not unserstanding there was a rookie on Megatron and he should have shaded more or on Davis for not telling them that at the start. I blame Davis.

There was safety help, but it wasn’t double coverage. It was pitch and catch so Stafford looked the safety off a couple of time. Birds 24/7 had a really good piece where they broke down the coverages. Billy said that he though Megatron was a better matchup than golden tate, which i think is fair consideration how Rowe looked in the slot earlier in the year (and that tate was crushing eric off the line last thursday).

The real problem is we have no pass rushers. This would be one reason why i’d advocate a 43 instead of a 34. It’s hard to find a 34 OLB unless you’re picking at the top of the draft and you get lucky one year. In 43 you’d have good pass rushers and it’s easier to work in the “specialists” that you can get in the middle rounds (curry types).

Random shit: I’ve read some provocative posts here advocating the dismissal of Kelly, the retention of Kelly, the firing of Davis, the removal Kelly’s GM title, and a variety of other observations and recommendations. I thank one and all for playing. I think the role of a fan is an almost constant state of anxiety, and the fan’s state of mind – on a scale of realism to fantasy – seems to be largely contingent on the record. Losing tends toward more realistic posts and winning tends toward bloated hype. Both extremes feature timely exhibitions of spontaneous humor and citations of irony. That’s my impression.
I am inclined to write off the bombastic exhortations of self-announced geniuses, but they trigger some brilliant rejoinders, and all of it is fodder for a pondering mind. I have fulminated against Kelly, and expressed admiration for him, and despite a bunch of question marks, I find my thumb is still pointing up. I honestly don’t feel certain at all about the role or degree of influence that Bill Davis has on the outcome of most games, mainly because I think he’s following the preferences of Kelly. I do think the defensive coaching could be improved especially in the area of in-game tactics, but I also believe that there is still a learning curve for many of the new and young players that can undermine the DC’s options in a given game. One thing I believe does not get enough consideration: The absence of a legitimate stud edge rusher magnifies all of the woes of the defense. A play-maker at that position could have a miraculous impact on the secondary and the run defense. And I will end this run-on post with a nod to an old but proud owner: Jerry Jones. He may be odious in his penchant for hiring thugs and he may be disgustingly flamboyant, and sickeningly hypocritical, but he has built himself a grade A offensive line, and I would love for the Eagles front office to take note.

Good post, you seem hinged today. If you look around the various Eagles and football sites, you will see a wide range of opinions. Igglesblitz generally represents the most optimistic active group that I’ve seen. We do have our resident genius here, of course, who unlike the flying saucer group at least has shown some flexibility of mind. It is really hard to predict much about Kelly, what with his rather extreme results in college, unusual philosophy, and sweeping personnel maneuvers. I would be a lot more sanguine about this team’s outlook if it built from the lines, if Kelly showed more flexibility in his coaching, if he learned that good teams hold on to their talent.

  229. 229 RobNE said at 7:20 PM on December 5th, 2015:

we might be on the more optimistic side but isn’t having hope about your sports team what makes it fun and entertainment. If I really thought every year that the coach (whoever it is) sucks and the team sucks, and I just want it to fail so I can say I’m right, that just doesn’t sound like a fun time to me. Either I’m wrong and personally hurt and they do well (but not win a SB), or I’m right and my team sucks. In the 1/25 -1/50 years they win the SB I guess I’m happy anyway (ok if I was wrong), but that doesn’t happen enough. That’s like red I lose, black I lose, but green maybe ok. WTF would we play that game for?

  230. 230 ChoTime said at 11:41 PM on December 5th, 2015:

Yeah, I think different personalities just do “fan” different. Like there are some that expect the worst because they don’t want to be disappointed, and there’s others that expect to win each game and prefer going at it like that. It’s all good. For me, I go between the normal fan (I thought we were a Superbowl contender after preseason) and what I would call “reality-based”. I enjoy trying to look under the hood a little and try to understand why things happen. I have to admit that these last two years have disappointed me as I was pretty excited that Chip came here. But given that I came to the Eagles as a Randall fan, disappointment has come with the territory.

You known what is still grinding my gears? The fact we traded a 2&4 for Bradford when that should have been vice versa. Bradford pretty much has done about as much if not less than most water boys in the nfl. We should have got picks for Foles to go to Stl. The Shady trade was the worst trade ever. How do you trade a pro bowler/ nfl rushing champ still in their prime for an injured rookie and get 0 picks. We should have and could have got at the very least a 1 for shady and a mid tier player… But basically what ruined this team was the 2014 draft. 2 qb’s ripe for the picking Teddy B and Carr and we get Marcus Smith……… I’m scared what the eagles would give up for Johnny even as a free agent they will find a way to part with picks.

  234. 234 The original AG said at 4:42 AM on December 5th, 2015:

What about Foles in St. Louis and Bradford here makes you think that we should have gotten a 2&4 for Foles? Bradford has steadily gotten better, Foles has steadily gotten worse.

Yes, we gave a #2 for Bradford, and that might have been rich – but let’s not pretend that Foles was “the guy” and that we got fleeced. Bradford is way better than Foles, and it’s not even close. I can concede that we shouldn’t haven given a #2, but that’s about it. Bradford has played better with less than Foles.

Shady? He’s been hurt half the year, and he’s being used sparingly. So we’re paying $10 mill a year to a guy that isn’t getting the premier carries? Shady isn’t carrying the ball inside the RZ. And he’s been hurt half the season. He struggled here because he kept bouncing outside, but you want a 1st for that? That’s absurd.

Lastly, Foles (fools gold) lit it up in 2013. What would the fans/media think if Chip drafted a QB that had a stellar year? If you draft a QB in the 1st two rounds, you are expecting them to be the franchise QB. Hindsight is 20/20, but most people thought that Carr/Bridgewater weren’t going to be franchise guys.

I understand the frustration, but get a grip. Everyone is a draftnik after the fact – but those guys weren’t going to be top picks. Plus, Ags, Rowe, and Hicks are solid picks – moreso than taking a risk on QBs that you don’t think will be a franchise guy.

It’s fine to be mad at the coaching and the play over the season, but to “redraft” and say they should have done something is just silly.

  235. 235 Media Mike said at 8:29 AM on December 5th, 2015:

1 – The fact the the origional report of that trade included draft pics coming the Eagles way.
2 – Persistent rumors that the Rams were going to cut Bradford anyway.
3 – When we only got Kiko back for Shady McCoy, many folks were quick to point out that Buffalo taking on that large salary was part of the “compensation” in the deal. So why didn’t that matter in the Bradford trade?

  236. 236 JoeBlow said at 5:11 PM on December 5th, 2015:

on point #3, i’ve always defended the money aspect of the Bradford trade because even though Foles was cheap, he wasn’t going to be cheap for long if he was “the guy” going forward, evidenced by the 2 year extension the Rams gave him this summer. Actually i can’t seem to find a definite figure&years on his contract. The contract is for 13 million guaranteed, with a 4 mil cap hit this season, 8 mil next year and 13 mil in 2017 but that is a voidable year which it looks like the Rams will do. Meanwhile Bradford has the 13 mil cap hit this year, but that’s it. It was pretty much a 1 year prove it deal and if he stinks you are not tied up with a long deal so you can seperate from him. It’s also not really that crazy of a number compared to other quarterbacks who are considered “franchise guys”. The problem now is that we are pretty much in the same boat as last year in not knowing is Sam is the guy moving forward, and just like with Foles, i’d say most fans want someone different. I don’t necessarily disagree, but i just want stability overall

  237. 237 Media Mike said at 5:14 PM on December 5th, 2015:

I can see your point of view on that. We’ll have to see what Bradford winds up costing next year and/or what the Eagles total spending on the QB position is.

  238. 238 Flyineagle45 said at 10:26 AM on December 5th, 2015:

Teddy. B was regarded as the most pro ready qb in that draft class. The point about receiving a 2nd and a 4th for Foles is….prior to this trade, Foles was statistically better seeing as how he played and Sam had not. Even with injuries to himself and a depleted O-line he managed to win games. So at the time of the trade not now Foles should have been worth more compensation than Bradford. As far as Shady if bouncing outside and gaining 1300 yards is struggling, what do you call this nonsense we have now? We should have got more than a straight up trade for basically a 1hit wonder lb that’s my point. Currently Bradford is better than fools gold. Would you be mad if we had an extra 2&4 and Foles was suckin it up in Stl. I don’t think so.

Maybe, but as with all things you have to let it play out. If Carson Palmer can do it in AZ, I think SB can do it here. Same thing with Foles, they got to let it play out.

  250. 250 Flyineagle45 said at 11:19 AM on December 5th, 2015:

Really I would like to know your reasoning. So you’re obviously impressed with kiko’s play this season? You would give up a perennial pro bowler for a 1hit wonder oft injured LB. I might be on drugs but they aren’t quite as good as yours.

  251. 251 D3FB said at 11:35 AM on December 5th, 2015:

Kiko played fine in the opneing game. He’s a very good player. He was picked 46th in his draft which is pretty high for ILB. He’s not a “one year wonder” like Jamar Chaney. He’s a top 10 ILB when healthy, who you got 3 years of paying him absolute peanuts.

Shady is a great talent. No one disputes that. But he was expensive and backs fall off a cliff right around his age.

You were trading an expensive RB about to fall off a cliff in a year or two for a stud young ILB who you were paying peanuts.

Its not Madden you weren’t getting a 1 for Shady.

  252. 252 ChoTime said at 11:39 AM on December 5th, 2015:

It’s a good deal if it works out. It’s not a good deal if Shady plays better than the also expensive Murray here, and Kiko, who has missed 1.5 of 2.5 seasons, continues to sit or be rusty in every game. Notice that a lot of the injury-prone players Chip brought on board are again injured.

  253. 253 anon said at 11:41 AM on December 5th, 2015:

i dont think kiko was totally healed from the acl. problem too is when you’re injured you’re not practicing and for guys in a new system it can take a year to mesh.

  256. 256 ChoTime said at 11:33 PM on December 5th, 2015:

That appears to be the case. I wonder if Chip will re-evaluate his apparent belief that formerly injured players are a good bet.

On a related note, we know that Gore turned down our offer; is it true that other players we targeted did not want to come here? If that is true, that is concerting, given we were coming off two 10-win seasons and optimism was so high. Imagine how hard it will be to attract talent now after what has happened.

  257. 257 D3FB said at 11:43 AM on December 5th, 2015:

Signing Murray with the cap savings was stupid. But that’s seperate from the trade itself and has more to do with them being a bit befuddled as what to do with the money they had saved for McCourtey.

  258. 258 ChoTime said at 11:59 AM on December 5th, 2015:

I hear you, but I am not sure how valuable trying to disentangle these moves are. They add up to a bad and seemingly undisciplined offseason.

  259. 259 D3FB said at 2:39 PM on December 5th, 2015:

At the time of the Shady trade Demarco wasn’t a target. It wasn’t until we were left with extra cap room, Gore and Mccourty didn’t come that Murray became a target.

  260. 260 P_P_K said at 4:46 PM on December 5th, 2015:

I thought it curious the Eagles put so much money into signing Murray. Seemed to show a lack of confidence in Mathews. Once they signed DeMarco, I was excited at the prospect of two-back sets.

  261. 261 D3FB said at 6:29 PM on December 5th, 2015:

I mean Mathews is a great back, but I think you don’t want to give him more than 150-200 carries. He just seems to always be getting hurt.

I wish they would’ve been more disciplined intheir cap management, drafted somebody on day 3 and gone with Mathews, Sproles, Polk, draft pick to get to 400 carries.

  263. 263 Gian GEAGLE said at 6:45 PM on December 5th, 2015:

Gotta figure, Maclin and McCourty each turned down 10mil we were offering them.
    .
Gore pulled out at the last minute
    ..
There were also reports of us trying to sign one of the most expensive Guards, Orlando Franklin..
    ..
We struck out trying to sign a bunch of our top targets, and all of the sudden we found ourselves without a RB when Gore pulled out..
    ..
today, the Demarco Murray deal doesn’t look like a great move, THATS for sure. But even when Ryan Mathews was lightening it up looking better than mathews, I knew there would be a time when we would need Demarco, since history suggests we ain’t getting 16 games out of Ryan Mathews…while the murray deal has been a dissapointment, he has shown us flashes of talent and ability that we can work with. It’s not ALL sliding to avoid corners. He has had some real nice physical runs, leaped over a few defenders and since we can’t get rid of his contract after this season. I’m hoping next season we get a much better year out of Murray for a.few reasons:
    1) More comfortable in This scheme and different style of running the ball, maybe we actually łet him practice more in the offseason instead of being afraid to use his last summer.
    2) an,Embarressed chip is forced to evolve more and tailor packages that take advantage of Demarcos strengths which will require running a bigger of the offense from under center to better utilized Murray
    3) A Better OL in front of him. Run blocking at times tbis year has been some of the worst run blocking I have ever seen by the Eagles, LITERALLY!
    4) hopefully an improved passing game next year
    ..
It’s not TOO LATE for Murray to be a good addition, but so far, it’s definitely dissapointing, and he will be a year older next year, so it’s far from a guarentee that those above listed factors will provide us a Better demarco Murray…
    .
Curious to see what our RBs look like next year.. There is a real possibility that we won’t add ANY New RBs and bring these 4 back for one more year, or they could cut Sproles and replace him with Barner, or cut SPROLES and replace him with a rookie… Any way we slice it, probably won’t see much change in our RB room Next year

  264. 264 Cafone said at 7:19 PM on December 5th, 2015:

  266. 266 RobNE said at 7:16 PM on December 5th, 2015:

I agree signing DeMarco was the biggest wtf moment for me. Looked like you saved all that money and hey lots of teams fill RB with cheaper options, it’s like a reliever in baseball. I don’t know if Gore turning them down threw Chip off his game or what. But that was a surprising move.

  267. 267 Tumtum said at 12:40 PM on December 5th, 2015:

Regardless of the future of either players, at the time that trade was fair and equal. Right or wrong it was value for value.

  268. 268 Gian GEAGLE said at 6:13 PM on December 5th, 2015:

    1) you aremt seeing a healthy kiko. If he can put the knee injuries behind him, this will easily end up being his worst year as an eagle.
    .
    2) we traded for a linebacker on a rokie contract with only one year of NFL experience under his belt, not some veteran on an expiring contract. It’s pretty simple, if he can put the knee injury behind him, we will get seasons of quality play out of him, much better than anyghing he has shown in midnight green yet. If the knee injuries continue, we will never be able to count on him…but Kiko was acquired for more than just this one year, so it will be a while before we can really judge the trade… if KIKO was healthy and had this type of season, I would be worried and more inclined to agree with you, but it’s no secret that his knee hasn’t been rigjt and instead of shutting it down for the year, he is trying to warrior thru it. Gotta respect that, and hope he doesn’t suffer any set backs
    .
    3) obviously getting a team to take Shadys contract off our books was also important to chip.. Gonna take some time before we can really judge that trade. when Healthy, I expect KIKO to be one of the most talented players on our defense, and he only had one Year of pro mileage on his body when we traded for him.. So it’s not too different than trading Shady for a draft pick, getting rid of an expensive player for a kid with a few years left on a rookie contract, and we already know that this young Talent translates really well to the NF! Without having to worry about spending the draft pick we get in return for Shady on a bust… Kiko’s health will determine if it was a great trade or a bad trade… If he is done with serious leg injuries, Im very confident that we haven’t seen anything yet from KIKO… Unfortunately, like a lot of chips decision we have to worry about the injury element even more so than you already have to worry about any NFL player getting injured..
    ..
But what we are seeing from KIKO this year is nothing. He will either stay healthy and be one of our best defenders, or he will be injured and won’t be on the, field… Either way, the level of play we are aeeing this year is an ANOMOLY in my expectations..

  269. 269 Cafone said at 7:22 PM on December 5th, 2015:

Yeah, I don’t understand that either. Kiko looked like crap last week. He also looks skinny and weak. He seems like he needs to put on 15-20 pounds.

  293. 293 Media Mike said at 7:36 PM on December 5th, 2015:

You’re totally correct that we’re way too early to know who can be there at 9 or not. Goff, as you can already see with some guys on here, generates some interesting arguments on where he should be drafted. In this particular mock, the Niners took Lynch at 7.

We’ll have to see how brutal the scouts get with the QBs as the season ends and they go into the draft hype.

  294. 294 RobNE said at 7:44 PM on December 5th, 2015:

ok but I kind of meant the first QB (if that’s him) hardly ever lasts that long with so many teams needing one. He would REALLY have to be in a different tier to be passed by while a team takes a position that is half 20% as important. BPA be damned.

  295. 295 Media Mike said at 7:49 PM on December 5th, 2015:

Hard to tell who will be drafting early and need a QB.

Titans and Jags are all set at QB. I’d assume San Diego is all good there as well. So are Cowboys, Lions, Saints, Dolphins, and Ravens.

Figure San Fran, Cleveland, and the Rams are the teams besides us in the 2/3/4 win group who definitely need a QB.

  301. 301 Tumtum said at 12:37 PM on December 5th, 2015:

  302. 302 Crus57 said at 1:47 PM on December 5th, 2015:

My thoughts also, TT was fantastic at covering the blind side but wasn’t so good at getting movement going forward (especially in goal-line situations I seem to recall). Peters can do it all. And Peters was a TE.

  303. 303 Media Mike said at 2:57 PM on December 5th, 2015:

At his best, Shawn Andrews was also a bad mofo, but for a Guard we drafted, he didn’t play even close to enough to have been worth a 1st round pick. He retired like a decade ago, and Wilfork is still playing today… Maybe if he was a running back, we could consider the few years we got out of Andrews a good pick, but hall of Fame Guards play into their 30’s….If Andrews had the mental strength to match his physical ability, and played about 5 years more than he did, Shawn Andrews would probably he a hall of Famer

I’m sort of with you guys too. As a kid i loved watching him play, but as i matured i got sick of the adoration from the media, and he was careless with the football. Plays like he had against the Eagles in the playoffs where he just threw a lob to Dawkins were becoming far too frequent. Then towards the end of his Packer days when he couldn’t decide if he was going to retire or not, and part of me thinks he actually reveled in all the drama over him, i just totally turned on him and have not liked him since. I think during 2008? he retired and Mike Mccarthy named Rodgers the starter….then like a month later Favre decided he wasn’t retiring and acted like the job should just come back to him and he hadn’t even been playing well. It was unfair to Rodgers and to the team. I was pretty happy that GB won a SB without him, even though they beat us to get there and was equally happy watching him throw a pick the year before to blow a chance to win the SB.

All the while he was costing his team games by making dumb decisions but since he was Brett Favre, nobody said a bad word about him. Then the constant media coverage about him retiring or not retiring was nauseating. And his pouting while holding press conferences regarding his retirement were even worse. I remember one time he held a press conference to make the announcement on whether he was going to play the next year, and when he showed up he scoffed at everybody there and acted like he didn’t know what the commotion was all about…..and HE is the one that called the press conference!

That is an interesting scenario. Magic Johnson played basketball with HIV didnt he? Even if someone gets a direct needle stick from someone with HIV the chance you will contract the virus is less than .3%. Also you can recieve AZT after the stick to basically obliterate the chances of getting the virus. I would assume a bleed wouldnt be much risk at all but still a risk. HIV is extremely fragile outside the human body and Im not even sure how long its viable outside the body.

Some pro coach (can’t remember whom), I think a baseball guy, said the coach’s job is to relax, loosen guys up under pressure and when the chips are down, and keep the guys on the ball when things seem easy. Kelly is doing his routine job in this way perhaps. Every Eagle is feeling the pressure, and there’s a likelihood (that’s already occurred) of them tightening up and playing scared, on their heels. When you make a few good plays, suddenly a team gets confident, but then they could be outperformed by the opposition digging in.

Manziel has played well on the field this year. Off the field, he is apparently aware he needs to grow up and clean up his act, but I don’t have any inside information.

  370. 370 RobNE said at 7:28 PM on December 5th, 2015:

your last point reminds me of the Sixers. What, it’s the beginning of year 3 and we aren’t a winning team yet? As if they didn’t suck (or at best be mediocre with no hope of sniffing a title) for 14 years. So instead of 8 wins at this point we have 1 is that really much different?

  371. 371 Cafone said at 7:34 PM on December 5th, 2015:

The only problem I have with the Sixers’ plan is that they haven’t dropped the ticket prices much lower. I’m trusting the process, but they are saving money by not picking up veteran journeymen who could make the team more competitive so I think they should throw a little back towards the fans.

  372. 372 RobNE said at 7:35 PM on December 5th, 2015:

yep that’s fair. Ticket prices I assume are a drop in the bucket for their revenue anyway compared to TV etc., so you would think that wouldn’t even hurt much at all.

  373. 373 Media Mike said at 7:38 PM on December 5th, 2015:

  376. 376 Media Mike said at 7:39 PM on December 5th, 2015:

I think you’re going to get the 4th year, but the way stuff works is that the end of year 4 they’ll either extend him or fire him. Good owners (that aren’t megalomaniac DUI pill heads) don’t let a coach go into a season in the last year of his deal.

  377. 377 RobNE said at 7:42 PM on December 5th, 2015:

    But Irsay…..oh I get it.

  378. 378 RobNE said at 7:42 PM on December 5th, 2015:

To your first part, I think Chip did make some mistakes and this year wasn’t just bad luck. But I remember Lurie likes him (and I believe it too) b/c he’s a wicked smart dude re: football. So my hope is he improves.

I do wonder if we just over estimated the talent. On O, where are we even above average? The WR’s are not good, the OL has not been good, no for QB, RB…maybe? I hope it’s because Bradford needs more time, Kelce is better than this etc. But the O he put out there is not good. The WR’s kind of really suck.

The D: our corners are just not good enough. They are likely better than last year but that isn’t saying much. Our DL is good but the lack of a pure rusher who just can’t be stopped sometimes really hampers us. The ILB positions which was our biggest strength seems not so much now.

Our kicker is not good. So overall, I just wonder.

  379. 379 anon said at 7:51 PM on December 5th, 2015:

agree. no pass rush makes our DBs look worse than they are. We don’t have enough depth to be a coverage team. i’ve said it before this is my number one reason to switch to a 43, gives best rushers ability to rush. plus you can find good 43 rushers in later rounds but you’re not going to find a 34 olb w/ pass rushing skills in later rounds.

Desired outcomes for remaining games this weekend

    Jets over Giants

Cards over Rams – I need Arizona to help block Scam potentially getting to a Super Bowl

Falcons over Bucs – Rapist Winson can lose again

Seattle over Vikings – Seattle getting hot down the stretch is another opportunity to keep Scam from advancing in the playoffs.

Texans over Bills – I’d love to see O’Brien on a playoff run; especially if it keeps the Steelers out.

Ravens over Dolphins – But Dan Campbell is soooooooooo tough, right? Except he’s from Texas, played college in Texas, and played mostly for the Giants and Cowboys in the NFL; NONE OF THAT IS ANYWHERE NEAR PHILLY………..he’s not tough.

Bengals over Browns – I’m enjoying Cincy this year

Titans over Jags – I’d like to see Mariota win a few more

Niners over Bears – Kaepertrash is gone, so I don’t have to root against San Fran any more and we need the Niners to finish with a better record than the Eagles for Goff purposes

Broncos over Chargers – Denver is kind of fun to watch with Oswiler.

Chiefs over Raiders – Enjoying a Chiefs playoff run and the further proof that Alex Smith is better than Kaepertrash……and a Chiefs playoff run keeps the Steelers out.

    Saints over Panthers – duh

Colts over Steelers – I enjoy the Steelers fans having to be miserable.

Washington over Cowboys – I don’t like Washington, but I cannot stomach potentially seeing the Giants make the playoffs.
