The Eagles fired Chip Kelly.

Per PE.com:

Today, Jeffrey Lurie, Chairman and CEO of the Philadelphia Eagles, released Head Coach Chip Kelly.

β€œWe appreciate all the contributions that Chip Kelly made and wish him every success going forward,” said Lurie.

Coach Pat Shurmur will be interim head coach for Sunday’s game against the New York Giants.

Ed Marynowitz, vice president of player personnel, was also released. Tom Donahoe, former GM of the Buffalo Bills and director of football operations for the Pittsburgh Steelers and senior football advisor for the Eagles since 2012, will assume the role of senior director of player personnel.

lol no i wanted chip to say. i was shocked

  8. 8 John Galt said at 7:28 PM on December 29th, 2015:

Fair enough. I think this was the right move. They were getting worse, and older, and I think the tempo thing got figured out and the offense was just too predictable and simple

  9. 9 Allen3000 said at 7:58 PM on December 29th, 2015:

I was kind of shocked and ambivalent. I dunno. I played and now coach a Wing T team. I don’t care for Chip’s offensive philosophy (and certainly not for his defensive), but I did think he brought some innovative concepts to the table.

From a personal standpoint, I’m torn here. I never quite got a full read on the guy. He’s probably very smart for keeping his personal life guarded. I do feel bad for the impending pile-up that will occur. At the end of the day, he’s a very, very solid coach who’s accomplished a lot in a very short span of time.

As sad as it makes me, this is the right move. I don’t think Chip’s speed of play would have ver worked in the NFL. Maybe we’ll see.

  27. 27 John Galt said at 7:27 PM on December 29th, 2015:

Agree. He was figured out and the team was getting older and worse. Better now than after 4-12 next year… But they may still go 4-12

  28. 28 Julescat said at 7:30 PM on December 29th, 2015:

count on a lot of 4 – 12 results in the next few years

  29. 29 John Galt said at 7:30 PM on December 29th, 2015:

    Very possible.

  30. 30 Sam Bradfords Chicken Legs said at 8:44 PM on December 29th, 2015:

Sadly I agree. Our defense played well early on too really well. But this team could look a lot different next year. Ugh wtf…..

  31. 31 Media Mike said at 7:28 PM on December 29th, 2015:

Hue Jackson anybody? I think he might be worth a 2nd shot as a HC
I’m also good with Shurmur getting another chance.

    No Jackson

  33. 33 shah8 said at 7:44 PM on December 29th, 2015:

  34. 34 Media Mike said at 7:45 PM on December 29th, 2015:

    Be nice!

But I like Jackson’s mind and creativity. So he’s on my list.

  35. 35 shah8 said at 7:46 PM on December 29th, 2015:

  42. 42 Sean Stott said at 7:31 PM on December 29th, 2015:

Firing him week 16 is insane, especially for Lurie. There must have been some really really really crazy shit happening. I’m stunned.

  43. 43 Sam Bradfords Chicken Legs said at 8:45 PM on December 29th, 2015:

No Lurie said Chip you suck, you are fired.

    They need to!

  51. 51 EaglesGameBalls said at 7:32 PM on December 29th, 2015:

It better be in the new coach’s contract. Nobody is above the Eagles organization and Chip has ALWAYs thought he was high and mighty.

  54. 54 CTbirdsguy said at 7:31 PM on December 29th, 2015:

  63. 63 Julescat said at 7:38 PM on December 29th, 2015:

this is not how to operate. why doesn’t Lurie just yell out that the organization is a total mess?

  64. 64 EaglesGameBalls said at 7:38 PM on December 29th, 2015:

    It is a total mess.

  65. 65 Julescat said at 7:39 PM on December 29th, 2015:

    that is the point!

  66. 66 CTbirdsguy said at 7:34 PM on December 29th, 2015:

shefter keeps saying Kelly was so unhappy…….HOW? WITH HIMSELF? THEY GAVE HIM EVERYTHING HE WANTED

  67. 67 The original AG said at 8:03 PM on December 29th, 2015:

Interesting. I’d like to hear some follow up on that.

  68. 68 John Galt said at 7:35 PM on December 29th, 2015:

Perhaps the lack of taking responsibility with the whole “I’m not the GM” thing rubbed Lurie the wrong way, I know it did me

  69. 69 Sean Stott said at 7:35 PM on December 29th, 2015:

    Yea that was really silly.

  70. 70 EaglesGameBalls said at 7:36 PM on December 29th, 2015:

Or it was how much of a disaster this season has been and how decimated the Eagles roster is.

oh my God Andy Reid spend so much time trying to improve his team that he doesnt have time to diet and exercise. Andy Reid has a good team. The Ealges and Chip Kelly have a shitty team.

  75. 75 Julescat said at 7:40 PM on December 29th, 2015:

the Chefs soft schedule will betray them

  76. 76 EaglesGameBalls said at 7:44 PM on December 29th, 2015:

Check NFL Power rankings. That team is good. Anything can happen in the playoffs. Man if Chip Kelly gets fired AND Andy Reid wins a Super Bowl…..man oh man.

  77. 77 Julescat said at 7:46 PM on December 29th, 2015:

the Chefs beat every soft team on their schedule but lost to every good team.

I hope it comes down to fatso’s bad clock management

  78. 78 EaglesGameBalls said at 8:00 PM on December 29th, 2015:

They were in position to win every game on their schedule this year. Mistakes were made and the ball bounced as it did, but they were never blown out. Not in any of them.

Chip Kelly sucks. Let him go there. He is horrible.

  84. 84 Sean Stott said at 7:38 PM on December 29th, 2015:

We could have traded him if that were the case πŸ™

  85. 85 shah8 said at 7:41 PM on December 29th, 2015:

    Expected.

  86. 86 shah8 said at 7:42 PM on December 29th, 2015:

It wasn’t really that he had a losing year. It’s mostly Chip the GM wrecked the team going forward, and he clearly doesn’t manage personal relationship well with other coworkers or his players.

  87. 87 Allen3000 said at 7:51 PM on December 29th, 2015:

I have no proof, but I do think there is a strong belief out there that Chip is very distant and doesn’t do a good job of fostering relationships with players. I get that it’s a business and they are grown men, but you can’t be too robotic and cold in your interactions with individuals who are asked to put their bodies on the line for you.

  88. 88 Bob Brewer said at 7:43 PM on December 29th, 2015:

    I sure didn’t expect it.

  89. 89 shah8 said at 7:47 PM on December 29th, 2015:

I pretty much did tell you before this season that Chip Kelly was paralleling Josh McDaniels. This is the natural coda.

  90. 90 Sean Stott said at 7:45 PM on December 29th, 2015:

Sorry but I call BS on that. No one expected this. This isn’t a fly-by-night organization that fires head coaches every two years. After two 10 win seasons, and a single down year where we were in the playoff hunt till week 16? Don’t act like you saw it coming.

  91. 91 Julescat said at 7:46 PM on December 29th, 2015:

    it is now.

    we are the new redskins

  92. 92 TypicalDouche said at 7:48 PM on December 29th, 2015:

  93. 93 Julescat said at 7:49 PM on December 29th, 2015:

any way we can trade for Manziel?

  94. 94 shah8 said at 7:49 PM on December 29th, 2015:

I don’t really think that will be the case. I think Lurie will have a better time attracting a candidate than the likes of the Browns or whomever.

  95. 95 Julescat said at 7:49 PM on December 29th, 2015:

we will probably hire the Browns coach once he is fired

  96. 96 JoeBlow said at 7:52 PM on December 29th, 2015:

    he is local

  97. 97 xeynon said at 7:41 PM on December 29th, 2015:

Wow. I am pretty shocked. This is so atypical for Lurie that I imagine something big must have happened behind the scenes. Perhaps Lurie told Kelly that he expected changes to be made or some such and Chip refused.

The offseason is about to get very interesting.

  98. 98 ChoTime said at 10:44 PM on December 29th, 2015:

    Curry – Logan – Cox – Graham

Lol McDaniels did the same thing in Denver. I’ll definitely pass on Shanahan. Gase is interesting.

  159. 159 kajomo said at 8:12 PM on December 29th, 2015:

That pretty stupid thinking. Josh was the youngest head coach in the nfl and definitely had an ego problem. However like most young people and many nfl coaches he has grown up amd learn form his previous experiences.

Josh is a guys that regularly puts together a completely differnet offensive attack every week. He is a guy I trust to cater the scheme to the talent on the field.

Shanahan would be my 3rd choice, but you cant ignore the fact that he puts a good offense together everywhere he goes. RBs always seem to play at their best under Shanahan (Alfred Morris, Freeman). I also feel that he is the most prepared for all of the responsibilities involved with being a HC.

  160. 160 wee2424 said at 8:26 PM on December 29th, 2015:

Is it stupid thinking? You just fired a coach with an ego problem and couldn’t get along with his players only to bring in either Shanahan or Mcdaniels that have had the same issue at their last HC spots.

I think you need to go in another direction.

  161. 161 kajomo said at 9:09 PM on December 29th, 2015:

Yes it is dumb to dismiss a coach without doing further research. McDaniels has openly admitted his mistakes in Denver. He has worked hard to learn from that and will be one of the most sought after HC candidates this offseason. He does not seem like a guy who is going to repeat those mistakes.

Also Kyle Shanahan has never been a head coach. You must be thinking if his father.

  162. 162 xeynon said at 10:27 PM on December 29th, 2015:

McDaniels should definitely be interviewed at the very least.

Everyone is so caught up in the “OMG we’re going to be Cleveland in Chip Kelly’s Belichickian career arc!” possibility that they’re ignoring the possibility we could be New England in somebody else’s Belichickian career arc.

    Now about Sam Bradford…j/k

  164. 164 wee2424 said at 10:29 PM on December 29th, 2015:

Initial reaction took ahold of me. You are correct in that it is dumb to rule out candidates without any initial research into said candidate.

Shanahan is an old dog and I dont see him learning from recent mistakes. Maybe im wrong.

With Mcdaniels the only concerns i would have is ego, getting along with players to an appropriate degree, and exactly how much of his success in NE is related not to his exact skill set but BBs. Yes, you are correct that he is worth looking into, but he does throw some red flags in which all candidates typically do.

The reason for my initial strong reaction was due to the similarities betwen his first HC gig and Chips downfall. Really striking and alarming how similar they are. Again, he was young at the time, is smart, and has learned from the best so he is worth interviewing at least.

  165. 165 kajomo said at 10:43 PM on December 29th, 2015:

It easy to make quick assumption, but other than QB picking the right coach is the most important thing for the franchise and it take careful thought. I think you’ll be surprised how much interest he gets this offseason. I would think he’d be a top target for us.

I think you keep think Im saying Mike Shanahan. I want no part of that guy. im sayong Kyle Shanahan. He was the redskins OC when RGiII had his big year, he made the browns offense respectable last year with no talent as the OC, and os the Oc for the falcons this year. You see what Julio and Freeman are doing. I said he would be the most prepare because he is the son of a head coach.

I’m more mad I think because I think they have some talent on the team and they seem to lose games in the last 4-5 minutes of the 4th. I’m not sure if it’s coaching, tanking, or both. For me it’s infuriating to watch.

I don’t hate Hinkie, and until sometime near the middle of last month I’ve started to sour. Plus, trading for a guy you cut seems to me that he’s struggling a bit.

Though I do have one theory. Hinkie was great at getting assets, getting rid of dead weight, and freeing up the cap. What if that’s his job, and the real GM is coming to bring it home?

I’m shocked but Chip must have been crapy with Lurie to make this happen. Plus he didnt get value in trades having a problem with a lot of players Lurie valued, McCoy, Maclin and DeShawn and the Foles for Bradford move. No value at all.

The team unfortunately probably needs a total flush and rebuild and possibly Joe Banner back to help rebuild things.

And the hurry up simple offense was just fine, but, you get more opportunities but also give the other team more tries, so a neutral move at best. We didnt wear other teams out.

  213. 213 Maggie said at 8:21 PM on December 29th, 2015:

  214. 214 The original AG said at 8:23 PM on December 29th, 2015:

Bradford the last 5-6 games he’s played hasn’t been the issue, matter of fact he’s played pretty well considering what’s been going on around him. He gets rid of the ball quickly (which he has to do not to get sacked) and that’s tough for most QBs in the league. He’s been pretty accurate, and he has generally put his receivers in positions to make plays. That’s all you can ask of a QB.

  215. 215 Maggie said at 8:24 PM on December 29th, 2015:

Please stop your love affair with Jackson and look at his actual record. There were only 2 years where he had more than 6 touchdowns. That is not an elite or even No. 1 receiver. The goal of most players/teams is to score and win. Jackson makes highlight of the night, but how many times did his teams make the playoffs?

  216. 216 The original AG said at 8:27 PM on December 29th, 2015:

It isnt a love affair, he was a guy that made a lot of plays. Maclin finally came on strong too and then poof, you have a rookie and not a lot of good deep guys.

I think Jackson was nearly on a record breaking pace for plays over 40 yrds, so, a good deep threat always helps, even if your adding other wr.

Unless he really really changes his thinking, no way.

Dick vermeil said it best; I used to be an idiot, but, then I got better players and became a genius”. Giving away a cool gadget player like DJ, and, ditching Mcacoy and then spending a pick on Bradford for Foles AND 10 million.

Not to mention the Murray situation.

Chip got a lot of rope and hanged himself. Didnt respect the fatman and building through the oline. Didnt realize the rest of the league is filled with smart students of football.

So. No. Kind of like thinking Steve Spurrier was going to be successful or the run and gun was going to work magic with out the talent.

i’ve seen this on the scroll of ESPN. Pretty much said Lurie asked Chip if he would give up some power as GM and Kelly balked, Lurie fired him

I don’t understand, didn’t chip just say he wasn’t the GM? How could he give up power he doesn’t have?

Ugh. I hope people aren’t putting blind faith in this guy too. Part of the reason we are not a better team is due to some of his shitty drafts which we never seem to be clear on which he had a hand in.

  259. 259 ac134spectre said at 8:23 PM on December 29th, 2015:

I really like some of the players we have though. Lane Johnson is a big deal, i think Jordan Mathews helps. Then have a good bit of faith in Kelce.

Defense, you have some up and comming ILB or 4 3 LBs.

Dont have an amazing guy there at 4 3 DE or OLB but could be worse.

Talking to you guys about the FS or SS position though. Well. You all are rembering BDawk for the position and everything else is some kind of downgrade.

  260. 260 Fufina said at 8:24 PM on December 29th, 2015:

Kelce is really dependent on the scheme… he is good if he is on the move… struggles at anchoring line or blocking 1v1 against strong DT’s.

  261. 261 The original AG said at 8:25 PM on December 29th, 2015:

I don’t have faith in Kelce anymore, this is the 2nd season in a row he hasn’t looked good. Last year I gave him a pass for being injured. This year? No excuse for bad snaps, missed assignments, or getting blown off the ball. Many teams started lining a player over top of him, because he hasn’t done well this year and most of last year when 1-v-1 vs other players – and that’s what DCs have been exploiting at points this season.

  262. 262 ac134spectre said at 1:05 PM on December 30th, 2015:

Yes, he has always been a pulling and movement guy. I am not sure where it went wrong. I will try to focus on him a bit more.

  263. 263 Sam Bradfords Chicken Legs said at 8:25 PM on December 29th, 2015:

I hope we get an offensive coach (head coach or just offensive coordinator) who uses Jordan Matthews downfield more.

  264. 264 The original AG said at 8:26 PM on December 29th, 2015:

And Agholor, and getting Huff open in space. And generating an offense that doesn’t play with 7 yards of the line.

  281. 281 Forthebirds said at 9:33 PM on December 29th, 2015:

I thought Chip deserved another year and Lurie would give it to him. However, clearly it was Chip’s role as GM that cost him the job. My first reaction was Lurie probably asked him to step down as GM and Kelly wouldn’t. Some sources are now saying this was the case. I thought the team had quit on him before the Patriots game, but they seemed to play hard in that and the Buffalo game. I hope whoever comes in keeps Bradford who is better than any of the available options. No reason to bring Kap or any of the running QB’s available if the offense is going to change. I have never bought into a lot of the psychobabble about Chip’s personality, but he clearly wasn’t a players coach. He will get another shot at being an NFL head coach. Maybe he joins Marriota and that’s what he wanted. A lot of NFL head coaches failed with their first team, and later had success, some winning the Superbowl. I wish him well. On the other hand, I find myself looking forward to what now appears to be a very interesting off season.
