Down Goes Brady!!!

Posted: December 6th, 2015 | Author: | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 748 Comments »

Tom Brady finally lost to the Eagles. Not many people expected this for a variety of reasons. Most simply, the Pats were 10-1 and the Eagles 4-7.

But this was one of those games where you throw out the records and stats. The Eagles were desperate and the Pats were banged up.

The 35-14 lead felt awkward and Brady cut into that with a pair of late TD passes. Then a fumble gave the ball back to them for one final drive. Somehow, the Eagles stood up and came up big on 4th/10.

Huge win for this team. It wasn’t smooth at the end, but this team made just enough plays to win the game.

Enjoy this game. You don’t beat elite QBs very often.

I can rewatch that throw to Cooper over and over. That’s the definition of clutch. He had every reason to panic and pull a Sanchez but he hung in there and delivered the most important play of the game, maybe the season.

  25. 25 Jarock said at 8:08 PM on December 6th, 2015:

Problem is, I still don’t trust Bradford to make a play on 3rd down with any consistency. They may as well punt on 3rd and long.

  26. 26 FairOaks said at 8:38 PM on December 6th, 2015:

He makes some, but if there is pressure, yes you can bet it’s a dump-off pass. That play however was a counterexample.

  62. 62 The original AG said at 9:55 PM on December 6th, 2015:

You aren’t the only one sans the way I feel about Sproles. We all thought they were losing today.

  63. 63 Gian GEAGLE said at 8:08 PM on December 6th, 2015:

No matter what happens this season, Bradford and the 2015 Eagles delivered the midnight green against these smug Bastards led by Brady for the first time.. It’s been a horrible year, but Today we were treated to a game Everyone will always remember… Didn’t expect to be drinking Johnny Walker Blue Tonight, but I’m going to enjoy this one….Cheers
    ..
On one hand, every time we think it’s the win that will make us turn the corner, we Fail… But on the other hand Bradford has been playing better than given credit of since a carolina, and it was amazing to see him come back, without needing to shake Off any rust, and was able to make some big throws to lead us to our first win against Brady and be the first team in a decade to give them a 2nd loss in back to back weeks.. Can Bradford continue to build on all the improvement he been showing since Carolina? Of do we continue the one step forward, one step backwards that held us back all year?
    ..
To get this win, and still get to play against the skins and Giants who we are competing with for the division, is about as close to controlling our own destiny as I could have hoped for..
    ..
Now we got Loudmouths Rex and Shady coming to philly, if we can’t get up for that game, we don’t deserve success…
    .
SAM Bradford playing well and continuing to grow in this offense is STILL the single best possible thing for this franchise. He has a great opportunity to step up, take control of this division and handle business against skins and Giants… Win those two games, and 1 of the Carfinals or Bills game and we win the division.. But that’s still a LONGSHOT in my mind with what a mess this year has been..
    ..
Can’t believe they gave us this win after being penalized for like 100 yards in first Quarter… This Eagle Team is impossible to get grasp on. I assume Vegas made a killing off the Eagles today

  65. 65 BobSmith77 said at 8:09 PM on December 6th, 2015:

Sanchez doesn’t win that game because you knows he makes at least one bonehead play down the stretch that would have resulted in an INT or a fumble.

  66. 66 myartz04 said at 8:12 PM on December 6th, 2015:

Under rated play of the game. When Brady went deep, I think it was the first play after the fumble. Rowe had great coverage, didn’t panic, and didn’t get a flag thrown on him. Well done.

  82. 82 Jarock said at 8:17 PM on December 6th, 2015:

Biggest ‘mistake’ Chip made this FA imho, devoting big money to RB. Would have been better off signing Mathews and drafting a guy imho. Maxwell’s been better after a really rough start to the season. Not sure there’s a FA that I think could make a huge impact on this team barring a quality Defensive Coordinator 🙂

  83. 83 miked718 said at 8:22 PM on December 6th, 2015:

Yup. I went to undergrad/grad school in Boston and lived there for nearly a decade.

Getting in and out of Foxboro was & is still a nightmare and I remember have my ass so numb I wasn’t sure if I had frostbite on those old metal bleachers.

New stadium though doesn’t have nearly the character or intimidation though. I feel a lot about Gilette Stadium as I do the Linc. Nice place but lacking any real character including that ridiculous lighthouse.

I was already lukewarm on the Pats, hated the Celtics and Bruins, and was a Red Sox fan even if the Phils were the team I root for first.

Red Sox were still popular in a way that the Pats still can’t match though. Mystified me how nuts the city was in ’03 and ’04 in regards to the Red Sox postseason runs.

  162. 162 FairOaks said at 10:20 PM on December 7th, 2015:

Actually no, that was true. For the division title, the common opponents tiebreaker comes before the conference tiebreaker, and the Eagles would have them there. Basically, that would be the record of each team removing head-to-head (which would be 1-1 if we win out) and the Eagles games vs. the Lions (loss) and Cardinals (upcoming) and the Redskins games vs the Rams (win) and Bears (upcoming). In your scenarios, that removes two wins for the Redskins, and just one win for the Eagles, meaning the Eagles have the better record vs. common opponents. For the wildcard tiebreakers, the conference record comes first, but we won’t be getting that.

  186. 186 Jarock said at 8:37 PM on December 6th, 2015:

  188. 188 Jarock said at 8:54 PM on December 6th, 2015:

  189. 189 RobNE said at 9:04 PM on December 6th, 2015:

but when there’s like 2 minutes left and it’s not really about getting the extra yard put the veteran in. There is only 1 rule and it’s 1-100 in that situation, and that is don’t fumble.

  190. 190 Jarock said at 9:06 PM on December 6th, 2015:

Not excusing it. Horrible play by Barner in a clutch situation, but there’s a reason why he’s a bottom of the roster guy.

  191. 191 Media Mike said at 8:55 PM on December 6th, 2015:

Great sign that Chip is now willing to change some. Earlier in year, there was still hope Murray would catch fire and return to form. Now there is no hope for him to have a great season. Sit him, let him be depth and just cut him later, take the huge cap hit, so rbs who fit the offense can play more.

    (a) Whenever a runner goes out of bounds on a play from scrimmage, the game clock is started when

clock, except that the clock will start on the snap:

i was watching the game recorded. on the first out of bounds run play, i was pausing the play every second or two, then my son and i together try to figure out what will happen with the play, where is the hole, who will make the tackle, etc. Fun times. So towards the end of the play, i say, “this is where Murray will give a stiff arm to Jones, then Jones will push him out of bounds” which is fine if that is what happened. But the stiff arm never came, and, like you say, Murray ran out of bounds with Jones maybe touching him a little. He would not have gotten far, but he avoided contact, not even a stiff arm.

This is a big win. Whether they can win another game remains to be seen. But I think what is more impressive about winning in NE, is that they were down 14 at one point and still came back and won. This team played desperate, and they got a W in a place that it’s not easy to do it.

  278. 278 RobNE said at 9:50 PM on December 6th, 2015:

Regardless I’m a firm believer there will be several qbs to pick in this draft and if the Eagles have to trade up, so be it. Even still you are never too far down in the draft to select a qb? WTH is that? So is there a stipulation that if you aren’t top 15, you can’t pick a qb? Some rule I was unaware about?

lolz . . . I actually agree with Jimmy. You’re right of course, this is a victory to savor, but Jimmy’s right too. In the big picture, this win doesn’t get us a thing. Also, to add some ice-water to Jimmy’s too far down to draft a QB, there isn’t a QB in this draft who’s worth a top 15 pick imho. Couple of guys who might develop, but there isn’t a single prospect who can carry Marriota’s or even Winston’s jock.

  295. 295 RobNE said at 10:22 PM on December 6th, 2015:

then we might as well lose out on purpose if that’s the attitude. If not, if you re going to try to win then this is a glorious win to have.

  296. 296 Jarock said at 10:25 PM on December 6th, 2015:

Had this win occurred in the 1st third of the season, I’d agree wholeheartedly. I’m not into losing on purpose, and I’m happy to see the D play better. Happy to see the special teams play better too. Offers some hope for next year. I have zero expectations for this team at this point this year. They’ve beaten it out of me with their horrible play for the 1st 2/3 of this season.

  297. 297 RobNE said at 10:27 PM on December 6th, 2015:

you can rationalize it though. If the team plays better (define how you want) they don’t need to fill as many holes. If the team really sucks and Chip gets fired and everyone is terrible (Bradford etc.) then picking about 6th isn’t going to save you.

  298. 298 Jarock said at 10:30 PM on December 6th, 2015:

Better play means less holes to fill. Unfortunately, I still think QB is the biggest one that MUST get filled. I’ve never been a Bradford fan and nothing I’ve seen has convinced me otherwise. He’s played better of late, yet I still expect every 3rd and 5 or more to be a punt. The Eagles remain abysmal on third down both on offense and defense. Those are problems that must get fixed if we ever expect to go deep in the playoffs.

I’ve been very disappointed with Jimmy K. He’s always been very snarky, which is fun when it’s aimed at other teams and when you’re winning. But now that the Eagles are losing, he’s gone from a fun read, to bitter.

Sure, I get it. The Eagles have had an awful year. But there seem to be two types of Eagles reporters. The ones who are sad and dismayed to see the Eagles lose and the one’s who revel at the opportunity to throw dirt on their graves. Jimmy quickly moved from the former category to the latter.

Always liked the 5th quarter and Riley was more optimistic than just about all season. Credited Kelly with emphasizing Sproles today/benching Austin/minimizing Murray, the OL settling down and giving Bradford good pass protection, and the pass rush which he said was far and away the best he has seen all season when they weren’t blitzing. About the only thing we was down on Davis going way too passive sending only 2/3 guys on that drive the Pats scored to make it 35-21.

Belechick’s teams are so well coached, that yu don’t normally see any one of those three things more less all three in a single game.

  351. 351 Mitchell said at 12:03 AM on December 7th, 2015:

There were concerns on Bryant before the draft about maturity and immaturity in his route tree. Honestly though, if you can run the deep route as good as he can, who gives a $h*t. There is a constant threat of the deep ball where multiple defenders have to watch him. He now has like 14 tds in his first 16 starts or something crazy like that. Yes he has Brown and Big Ben for help but it doesn’t take away his ability to get deep. On any team he is pulling defenders his way, freeing up the players to other side of the play. Kind of reminds me of Devin Smith out of Ohio. Extremely proficient at the deep stuff. One of the best ever in college.

  368. 368 Mitchell said at 12:16 AM on December 7th, 2015:

I feel like as lucky as the Eagles were last year, they were just as unlucky this year. Couple that with losing Maclin and the turnover on offense you have a regression formula. Losing Parkey, the O-line being kinda poopy, adding Murray, etc really hit the team hard. I am really starting to think this is a 1 step back 3 steps forward type deal. I also think Chip needed this year to break free some of his precious ideals. Am I wrong to say this may be a turning point along the timeline of this team? Is this Patriot win a statement? A fulcrum from which they leverage a great legacy? Am I getting carried away? Well, absolutely. Chip and the Eagles beating a Superbowl team feels real nice right now. If the Eagles put together some momentum ending this season it’s not impossible to think they could mimic what the Panthers are doing right now. Also, the idea of going back to a 4-3 is sounds super tasty. Just not sure Davis is the answer. Too much inconsistency with above average talent on defense. If Chip gambled getting better on offense with Bradford, it’s not far fetched to think he’ll do the same with Davis.

  369. 369 Mitchell said at 12:24 AM on December 7th, 2015:

As much as we malign Bradford for tossing the short stuff. So far this year (not sure if this is counting today’s game or not) he has 8 passes of 40+ yards already tying his career max and 32 of 20+ which is 9 less than his max for 16 games. While these numbers may not be fantastic, at least it seems, he’ improving.

sure there were some crazy plays that helped. but this win is huge, because Chip showed he could still get the players to “execute”, and to play hard. But most importantly Chip showed he was willing to change things up. Gone was the swing pass to Murray!!!!!!! Gone was Murray, Murray, Murray, punt to start the game. Not to crap on Murray, maybe more to give props to Sproles and Barner (except for that fumble). and props to Chip for game planning featuring Sproles more than anybody else.

Now i have a week to enjoy the win and figure out how else Chip changed things up and figure out if Davis did anything differently. Why was the pass rush so effective? Was it letting Curry go, unleashing Curry, cus not afraid of the run much? Also, it was partly a show of change by going to Reynolds instead of Maragos, not that Reynolds did much. And it was the coaching up of Rowe, whoever gets credit there, someone is coaching him well.

Jerry Jones was asked about life after Romo, and he sounded as if he regretted not having an heir to the throne by now. Dallas Morning News reported that Jones said the team planned to have Branden Weeden to build upon in the future…..LMAO…..”but that didn’t work out for us” Jones admitted. Jerry admitted to a radio station that the team needs to address adding a young QB, but doesn’t necessarily want to spend a 1st round pick on one saying “half of the first round picks don’t work, I go back to Weeden….there is a first round pick.” Cowboys have only drafted 2 QB’s since 1992, Stephen Mcgee in 2009 and Quincy Carter in 2001…..WOW. Jones also talked about the 2014 draft and mentioned that he was all for drafting Manziel to groom behind Romo, but also admitted they got a great player in Zach Martin instead and Manziel has had his well documented troubles off the field, let alone failing to impress so far on it. Something tells me Jerry still wishes they had gone with Manziel anyway, and i sort of get why because QB is so vital to the success and stability of an organization. Even though Manziel may have turned into a bad choice for the Cowboys, it’s a necessary risk that if you hit on just makes everything easier going forward. Even from an ownership standpoint, having a young QB waiting in the wings gives the fans hope and keeps their interest.

I think this little tidbit interview for Jerruh was interesting because it applies to every NFL team and especially the Eagles right now. This next draft is pretty important for Chip and the future of this organization. I think he needs to find a QB in this draft or stay committed to Bradford. personally i would like to see both drafting a kid and giving Sam a team friendly contract and develop the young guy. As of now it’s tough to see how this spring shapes out, let alone this season. Sam could end up being the guy for the next 5-7 years but i don’t see it more from a durability standpoint. The Cowboys were extremely lucky to discover Romo (UDFA). I even remember the first time i saw him play against the Seahawks in a preseason game in 06. Had a lot of moxie, and just commanded the offense well. I paid extra special attention to Dallas that year because it was also TO’s first season as a Cowboy after the messy divorce from Philly. The boys started out 3-2 before losing a Night game vs. the Giants on national television. Bledsoe got hurt in that game and Romo came in and threw a couple TD’s, at least one to TO, and put some life into the Offense and took the reins of the Franchise from then on. In the last 10 years, Romo has been called everything from an MVP to an accident waiting to happen. All i know is that the Cowboys have always been better with him, rather than without him as evidenced by this season. No Superbowls to show for it, but they are not guaranteed and i’m of the opinion that you have a better shot at one with a guy who is the “rock” that you know will be there year in and year out. I think this is where the Eagles organization needs to take a shot on a guy, even though this may not be the best year, in this draft because it is desperately needed, no more new faces leading this team every year. Also you don’t really know where this guy will come from. Could be a #1 overall like Cam Newton who i am not a fan of, but the guy is undefeated this season and had another great game today against a divisional opponent. His organization kept the faith in him by resigning him after there was some minor chatter that they might let him go since there hasn’t been a great deal of success overall. Could be a late round guy like Aaron Rodgers or Drew Brees (first pick of second round i think), a middle round guy like Russel Wilson who has a terrific W-L record, not to mention a SB victory, and just signed a big deal to stay with Seattle, or as we all know the wildcard late round long shot like Tom Brady. Whoever you take and wherever you take him, i kind of get the feeling a coach or organization gets the feeling right away if he’s going to be the guy. Pete Carroll was pretty adamant about Wilson being the guy right away, even though he was a 3rd rounder. IDK if Chip feels this way about Sam after spending this season with him, but he alluded to the importance of finding “that guy” back in May. “New England,Pittsburgh, Green Bay….Tom Brady Big Ben, Aaron Rodgers. It all starts with the QB and then you have to build around that.” That is what i like to hear and what i truly believe successful teams do to stay in the hunt. So far Chip has had no luck finding that QB for this team, but i hope he gives himself another shot somewhere in this draft to find him.

  378. 378 Mitchell said at 1:25 AM on December 7th, 2015:

I was just pondering on the qb situation myself. I believe Bradford should be resigned to a 2-3 year deal with some nice incentives built in. We have a decent idea of what he is and it seems to be getting better week by week. Having said that I am also all for drafting a qb, with the intention of sitting him for AT LEAST a year. I think 4 possibilities in the first round are Lynch, Goff, Cook and Wentz. I, nor anyone else have any idea how this draft will shake out so these four could go 1,2,3,4 or someone could fall. It’s just too important of a position and it’s tiring seeking “the guy.” As far as one of these four being better than another, it all has to do with situation and how quickly they see action. A prospect could have all the talent in the world and get dumped on. I am in favor of drafting and sitting for a year or two. In the 3rd round grab a real nice OL, hell, grab 2 of them. Fourth and fifths find some OLB/WR/DB with upside. I am so enamored with Mariota right now. Did anyone think he would have this kind of success? I wish I would have watched the Titans game today.

  379. 379 JoeBlow said at 1:42 AM on December 7th, 2015:

i didn’t think Mariota would adapt as quickly as he has…..same with Jameis. The Bucs are 6-6 and could make the playoffs. I f the draft were next week and we drafted where our record is now,IMO i would try to trade back in the first round and possibly gather a 2nd rounder and another pick (maybe a future pick), and i would draft Carson Wentz. I really like the guy, great arm and runs like a gazelle, but would have to sit a year to develop. I don’t think he is a guy you throw into the fire right away.

But then again, what the hell do i know or anyone else? it’s such a crap shoot when it comes to QB sometimes. I think Manziel should have been a 4th-5th rounder, the browns took him in the first, even traded up to get him. I thought Flacco would be a complete bust, but he’s already won a SB and i believe this could be the first year he doesn’t make the playoffs. I thought Rivers was clearly the best QB from the 04 class but the other two guys have 2 SB victories apiece and Rivers has a couple playoff wins while having a great RB in Tomlinson and a great reliable weapon in Antonio Gates. You just don’t know. You can look at this class and say “meh” but a few of them may turn out great. I like Wentz and Goff but Cook and Lynch may turn out to be starters for the next 12 years. A lot depends on the situation as well that these kids walk into.

  380. 380 Anders said at 2:43 AM on December 7th, 2015:

Of the 4 you mentioned, I only really want Lynch.

If the Eagles make the playoffs (great chance if the Redskins lose) or just finish around 7-9, I wouldnt pick a QB before one of round 3 picks.

Take an OL, DB or DL/edge in the first and then go for QB, WR, OL in the third.

  381. 381 Mitchell said at 2:44 AM on December 7th, 2015:

  382. 382 Anders said at 2:54 AM on December 7th, 2015:

Goff reminds me too much of Mark Sanchez or Alex Smith in terms of arm talent and while QB wins in the NFL is bad, in college a good QB almost never loses.

Cook is some weird combo of Kirk Cousins and Nick Foles for me and his own team hates him.

Wentz I have no real feel for and he plays FCS football

  383. 383 Mitchell said at 8:33 AM on December 7th, 2015:

Goff is still young. He still needs time for his body to mature before you can fully make that assessment. Who cares if Wentz plays FCS? If he has potential and you can see him make the throws, reads, etc then sign him up.

  384. 384 Anders said at 8:39 AM on December 7th, 2015:

Because the FCS is a clear tier below the FBS? I wouldnt mind Wentz, but not in the 1st round.

Not a good year for 3-4 OLBs unless you want guys like Barwin. If we keep winning we’ll be out of luck since the drop off after Tunsil/Stanley is pretty big. CBs don’t really fit the measurable for Chip but I’d take Hargreaves.

  388. 388 Anders said at 3:49 AM on December 7th, 2015:

For edge/DL, Buckner would be great and at DB, the only one I know so far is Jalen Ramsey, but both Buckner and Ramsey should go top 10.

  389. 389 Insomniac said at 4:02 AM on December 7th, 2015:

  392. 392 Ankerstjernen said at 3:53 AM on December 7th, 2015:

Actually Carrol didn’t feel certaint hat Wilson was ‘the one’. If you remember back, they also signed Matt Flynn for a revolting amount of money and I think they even traded for Clipboard Jesus that year too and brought in a veteran I cant remember. Flynn was supposed to be the frontrunner in that competition, but Wilson won out. And I think that is a proces all teams should learn from. QB is a crap shoot, so hard to project what will work out and what will not. So you keep taking shots, keep signing veterans, young guys with unknown upside, making trades and drafting in any round you feel like there is good value, and you just hope something sticks to the wall before ownership fires your ass. For what its worth I think this is pretty much what Chip has been doing – he tried with Vick and Foles, drafted Barkley late, traded for Bradford and signed veteran Sanchez, all guys that at least had a chance to be good here. You can argue that he should have taken more shots than that, given himself a few more tickets in the lottery – we could have taken fliers on Bridgewater and Carr for instance. But I think he has shown willingness to take shots and keep taking shots at that position, bringing in players with upside potential any way he can. I’ll be surprised if we dont draft any developmental QB in this years draft too and bring in someone else for TC too.

  393. 393 miked718 said at 7:52 AM on December 7th, 2015:

We need to sign Clipboard Jesus, that’s why our QBs have been trash. If only we had done it when Vick was still here.

  394. 394 Ankerstjernen said at 9:50 AM on December 7th, 2015:

You are completely missing the point, which is that most moves for a franchise QB will in fact fail miserably. But since there is no alternative, you have to keep trying and failing miserably until you get lucky. You can’t just stop trying to hit on guys because most of your attempts fail. Your statement is kind of cute but also asinine. Carroll, with his approach, signed Clipboard Jesus. And with that approach he eventually got lucky and identified a franchise quarterback. He had the right approach, bringing in any and everybody to compeed. And, arguably, got lucky in the end too. That is kind of important as well. Just ask the Browns.

  395. 395 miked718 said at 9:56 AM on December 7th, 2015:

Well at least you thought it was cute. That was a joke if it didn’t come through as such. My real thoughts are resign Bradford at a reduced number (or let him walk and play for the Browns or Texans next season) and draft one or two QBs and hope to hit that lottery ticket.

Wilson though…if Reid got him where would we be today?

  396. 396 Ankerstjernen said at 10:05 AM on December 7th, 2015:

Oh.. I didnt mean it as an insult! Cute things are.. cute. But honestly, I thought you were just trolling. My apologies. And yes, the stories about how Reid was ready to take RW a few spots later and the scouts wanted him earlier.. I’d just rather not think about it.

I think Bradford is a prime candidate for that weird ‘transition tag’ if he refuses to sign a team friendly deal. Nobody is going to send us high draft picks to sign him away, and if they do we will probably recoup whatever we gave up to trade for him in the first place. And I think its much less than the franchise tag..

  397. 397 JoeBlow said at 9:04 AM on December 7th, 2015:

i meant Wilson became the guy once the Seahawks came into training camp that year. I remember them signing Flynn to a pretty nice contract too, but i think the organization realized what they had pretty early on in RW and i guess the larger point i was trying to make was that i believe “franchise guys” give their teams that impression early on. There are exceptions though

  398. 398 Ankerstjernen said at 10:00 AM on December 7th, 2015:

Well thats true I guess. And the fact that they cut bait with Flynn even after all that money really shows it too. But I also think there are plently of exceptions where QBs have had terrible beginnings to their career, only to go on and do very well. Peyton Mannings first years were bot really that promising at all afair. Drew Brees got traded away for a reason and the bengals were more than happy to get rid of Carson Palmer. Kurt Warned had to go to the CFL to improve before returning to the NFL because nobody saw potential in him. And I think Chip was thinking of these guys, when he went after Sam Bradford. Guys with the intangibles who just hadnt put it together in the beginning of their careers. He thought he might get lucky. What he is thinking now though I have no idea.

I’m watching the game on NFL GamePass… considering CK is on record saying that he’s not gonna tailor his game plan to his players unique talents, I really don’t see DeMarco Murray back next season. Either he’s injured or already burned out… just looking at him compared to Sproles and Barner, there is no way he could get the yards they did on some of those outside runs. What a disappointment he has been! I know some of it on the O-line but he’s definitely not an asset at this point. We need another Ryan Mathews… one who can stay healthy.

A sweep from the shotgun may be the worst play for Murray to run.

  413. 413 AsianEagle said at 5:27 AM on December 7th, 2015:

It doesn’t play to his strength… he looks good running between the tackles when there’s a hole but what RB doesn’t. Maybe we are stuck with another year because of his contract… the Cowboys offense played to his strengths and he’s overrated imo. He’s nothing special and he’s not earning his enormous contract.

  414. 414 Media Mike said at 5:32 AM on December 7th, 2015:

I think he’s a very good back, but you have to use him the right way. If he’s suited to Dallas’s style of play, I’d hope we can swing a trade of him back there if we’re not going to use him properly. The real risk in the deal is gone for both teams in a trade, so I hope we can work something out.

Who should we be more upset with? Chip or DM? Maybe because of the one game they did run from under center he had more success from shotgun. BUT he had more success. Just a very strange situation.

  417. 417 JoeBlow said at 9:37 AM on December 7th, 2015:

i blame Chip….the shifting an injuries and generally sub-par performance by the o-line doesn’t help either, but how many times can Chip call the sweep for Demarco? He has to adjust his playcalling to the personnel in the game. Demarco ran an inside zone yesterday and picked up 19 yards but i felt like that was his only carry between the tackles. Even two weeks ago against the Bucs, Demarco was averaging around 5.5 YPC, but the D was giving up big play after big play so they had to abandon the run.

Demarco hasn’t been great either, but he is useful if you play to his strengths…..he should have kept Shady if he was going to run outside this much.

If you cut him going into next year there is negative $5 mil loss.

If you trade him back to Dallas there is a $4 mil cap savings.

Need a trade partner or need to wait until 2017.

  421. 421 FairOaks said at 9:40 AM on December 7th, 2015:

If you designate him a post-June 1 cut, and spread the hit over 2016 and 2017, then he is a net zero on the 2016 cap. But yes, a trade would be significant because the hit is his guaranteed 7 mil salary next year, and a trade moves that to another team.

Still feels like Chip should be able to find a better way to use him.

Such a nice win. The only negative I can come up with is the continued mistake of keeping Barner over Mostert, but I really enjoyed how the team played.

The question going forward is can they successfully beat Buffalo, Washington, and the Giants to get to 8-8 and win the division?

The Giants are toast given their schedule ( @Miami, vs. Carolina, @ Vikings, vs. us)

Washington has (vs. Dallas, @Chicago, vs. Buffalo, @ Eagles, @ Dallas)

So if the Eagles go 3-1 but lose to Arizona, that would make us 8-8, 1-1 heads up vs. Washington, 4-2 division, but 5-7 in conference.

Washington beating Dallas twice, beating Buffalo, but losing @ Bears and @Eagles, would make them 8-8, 1-1 heads up vs. us, but 7-5 in conference.

I’d hate to be 8-8 but out of the playoffs on a tertiary tie-breaker.

That’s not how it works, if the man is happy and wants to talk like it the day after a huge win is completely acceptable and in no way should be bemoaned. Chip is still a horrible coach? I know you just started posting here not to long ago but I can’t bet that you weren’t saying those things about Chip the previous 2 years. Then the next week the offense will move the ball up and down the field but the defense turns into a sieve. They are only one game better than us, but i have to admit they have recently gotten the run game going with Shady and a lot of that has to do with the performance of their o-line, they have opened up some big holes in recent weeks that i didn’t think they were capable of. Greg Roman is a good play caller and straight play designer too

  446. 446 FairOaks said at 2:09 PM on December 7th, 2015:

The common opponents tiebreaker comes before the conference record tiebreaker — that gives us a chance vs. Washington. We already have a lead in that regard — one of the Washington wins was vs. the Rams, a non-common opponent, and the Eagles have lost vs. Detroit, a non-common opponent, which means the Eagles have a better record against the common opponents. The Eagles have yet to play Arizona, and Washington has yet to play the Bears, but those are the only non-common opponents left. We’d have to lose to a non-Arizona team, and Washington would have to beat Dallas twice and Buffalo, in order to even that tiebreaker up.

Of course, it all comes down to beating Washington. We have to have that game. The Giants game is about as crucial.

  463. 463 ChoTime said at 10:34 AM on December 7th, 2015:

It is a shame that people can’t make their comments about football here without comments like yours attacking them. Those of us who are interested in the details and trying to understand the game are not necessarily going to be whitewashing everything. Apparently to a certain mentality, this is a kind of party foul. This is by far the most positive blog about the Eagles, so if this place bothers you, whose problem is it?

We have had at least five posters come on to complain about the doubters and make passive-aggressive remarks about the people pointing out the Patriots were hobbled. There is also an odd concentration of people who want to use this place to complain about Jimmy Kempski, instead of simply responding to him on his own blog.

There really is a simple solution, just talk about football, stop complaining about “negativity”.

  464. 464 Ark87 said at 10:46 AM on December 7th, 2015:

If you’re implying that it is my fault that you folks are so negative, then I’ll again point out that I haven’t read the comments in two weeks. Again, the negativity is unchanged.

I don’t expect whitewashing. I’d actually love if this place was exclusively Tommy, all 22 film studies, and D3FB posts, but instead I come in to see that a loss garners posts about how Chip is the devil and the season was sunk because of a choice about a 5th RB and after a huge win there’s posts about how Chip is the devil and the season was sunk because of a choice about a 5th RB. I’m happy to see everyone’s favourite troll is posting less, but that seems to be because everyone else is just doing a more coherent job of it instead.

I come here above all other Eagles blogs because Tommy generally expresses even his negativity in a constructive and insightful way. The comment section here used to be much of the same, but it’s not anymore. Oh well. It’s what makes the comments section of almost every sports website completely unreadable. My bad for pointing that out, everyone.

  466. 466 ChoTime said at 11:53 AM on December 7th, 2015:

It helps immensely for preventing soft tissue injuries and we really could use a healthy matthees down the stretch. Dude could make our offense scary combined with sproles and barner. Loved seeing Murray get benched, but we do need a nursing back to go along with sproles and barner.

I used to pull my quads and hip flexors on a monthly basis and since I started doing yoga every day (only 6 months ago) I haven’t had any injuries. It’s even made me faster and more agile as my hips have opened up. It honestly baffles me that it’s not a bigger part of NFL injury prevention.

While statistically the offense didn’t look good last night they certainly passed the eye test for me. We were moving the ball early but penalties were killer. Also we went up 28-14 before the offense really had a chance to do anything in the second half and after that we played careful, which included a clutch drive to tak3 the 35-14 lead. While we probably lose without the two return tds in the second half it would have given our o two extra possessions and more incentive the be aggressive. Say what you want about Bradford but he made two extremely clutch throws in the 4th quarter. The throw to Cooper where he had pressure and steeped up to throw a strike into double coverage was one of the best plays I’ve seen an eagles qb make since Nick foles’ aberrational 2013 season

Carson Palmer will show us what going down field is all about in a few weeks.

    ..
This team has shown it can have a good game here and there, but it won’t mean ANYTHNG if they don’t finally shpw that they can BUILD on a win…
    ..
Hopefully we ride this win to a win against the Bills… But I have to see us put together two good wins in a row before I feel hope for salvaging this season…
    ..
But, we,did see THE MOST IMPORTANT THING WE NEEDED TO SEE, that this team showed some fight and mental toughness and Did NOT quit on Chip, so a lot of positive to take from yesterday’s win

  513. 513 Gian GEAGLE said at 2:12 PM on December 7th, 2015:

I’m done THINKING about what this team will do. It’s the most impossible Eagle team to ever get a read on. I been in this position too many times this year when I thought a win was finally going to be the turning point of our season, and we fell flat on our faces every time. I officially haven’t gotten the slightest clue what to expect from this team from one week to the Next…
    ..
But, if they answer all that adversity by coming together to beat the Pats and the Eagles, I can’t help jump back on the playpff bandwagon
    ..
The Cardinals are a legit team and Carson isnt getting the MVP consideration that he deserves, but we tend to always play Bruce Arians team Tôugh, and had Nate Allen and Boykin not gave up that Bomb for a TD to John brown on 3rd down, chip would be 2-0 against Arians cardinals. One 3rd down stop from being 2-0… Today you have to consider the Cardinals as a better team than we are, but we seem to matchup well with them, and play them tôugh, so I don’t think either team will win in a blowout. It will probably be close, and we will have our chances to win.
    ..
The skins scare me, the seem to play us tôugh recently and they actually Fight when RG3 isn’t the QB… However, they are a significantly differemt team when they go on the road, compared to the team they are at home. Cousins becomes a mess on the road and they haven’t won outside of Washington all season, so Hopefully we can continue that trend when they come here in two weeks.
    ..
no Matter if we win or Lose the next 3 games, I THNK we completely OWN the Giants and have their number. Their OL is a bigger mess than it was early in the season, And I think Eli and the Giants are scared to death of Cox, Ced, Logan. Barwin.BG.and Curry.. And if the Giants are mathematically eliminated already when they play them, with COUGHLIN being fired hanging over their head, I expect them to completely Quit like the Eagles quit in Mew York for Andys last game as Eagles coach… The Giants is the ONLY win I feel real confident about…but if Bradford plays, these are all winnable games, just depends on what Eagles team shows up

We’ll probably remember the Pats win much longer in future years, but… it would make me feel a whole lot better about the team that we had been beating the teams we were supposed to, and we’d be well out in front in the division race. As in, we could keep improving and hit the playoffs on a roll, even with a not-great record. I suppose that could still happen but I need to see more. Granted, we were back to being the team prior to the previous two games — mental mistakes, somewhat inconsistent, but good at times and playing tight games (either giving up big leads or coming back from big deficits). We still need to be better to have a hope of doing anything in the playoffs, but the experience could all help for next year (maybe we follow the Carolina path).

  536. 536 Gian GEAGLE said at 1:33 PM on December 7th, 2015:

Bradford staying healthy and continuing to get comfortable in our offense, on an NFL field was always the single most important thing for this franchise, and im cautiously optimistic that he has been trending upwards since the Carolina game. His stats were nothing special yesterday, but he was pretty damn good on 3rd down and he made some great passes like the TD to Ertz, TD to Jordan, And the biggest play of the game, with all the momentum for the Patriots Startimg to pick up steam like a Giant boulder flying down hill at us during the patriot comeback, he stood tall in the pocket, didn’t flinch and delivered the crucial game winning pass to Coop… Bradford is like 5-4 as an. Eagle, beating Brady, and he played well enough to beat Cam Newton had our weapons not dropped 10 passes Bradford put in his WRs hands. Bradford should be 6-3 on a run having beat MVP Cam and undefeated Panthets, dissecting the Saints beating Drew Brees, a walk off overtime TD in Dallas, gave Sanchez a 19-3 lead against Miami, our team imploded while he was injured, then SAM comes back and leads us into Brady’s house giving us our first win against the legend of Brady. And he beat the Jets when they were undefeated….
    ..
While Chip was winning 20 games his first two season, the knock was that we never beat good teams, now we are having a mess of a season yet we are getting wins against some of the best teams we have beaten under chip, and it’s promising because I always thought it would take more than 1 season before Bradford really gets comfortable for us. Id LOVE to see how much more he can build on all this with an offseason of training to be a QB, instead of spending Offseasons rehabbing injury… Getting Bradford thru this year healthy was ALWAYS the MOST important thing for this Franchise. I 100% expect SAM back next year, but it be nice if he made it easier on Chip by leading this team to a strong finish to this season.
    ..
I can’t help to wonder how this locker room views SAM. He got injured and it seemed like the team was just deflated of all its fight and completely imploded. Does the team have zero confidence in Sanchez that they barely fought for him? We went down 14-0 yesterday, if Sanchez was our QB, I think we would have imploded.. Yet with SAM back at QB, the team shows some fight and mental toughness…
    ..
SAM growing into the Longterm QB of the Eagles would sure be a heckuva silver Linning for such a tumultuous season… But we aren’t there YET…

  537. 537 jaws80 said at 3:53 PM on December 7th, 2015:

might just be coincidence, but if you bracket the 2.7 games they played awful in, that bracketed segment of games aligns perfectly with the time Bradford was out and Sanchez was in. Might say more about the lack of faith in Sanchez, but i want to think Bradford gives everyone confidence somehow.

Best things I took from the game.
    .
#1 Easily the fact that the players haven’t quit on Chip. Nothing is more important than that.
    .
    2) Bradford continuing to get comfortable leading us to wins against some of the best teams we ever beat during the chip era
    .
    3) Fletcher cox was Dominant and Destructive yesterday and the Catalyst for a lot of the stats our front 7 players recorded yesterday
    .
    4) PLEASANTLY SURPRISED That Jason Peters and Lane were able to stonewall Chandler Jones and Ninkovich which is no easy accomplishment
    ..
    5) TURNOVERS! Defense back to playng like the team that forced turnovers a as well as anyone, and Bradford continues to take care of the ball. Gotta eliminate the Barner fumble tho..
    .
    6) our Safeties reminded us why they were top rated safety tandem for most of this season.
    .
    7) Eric ROWE showed a ton of talemt, and more important mental Toughness overcoming getting dominated by MEGATRON on National TV last week to show up and have a fantastic game against Brady in a starting role. he showed good technique in coverage, continues to show good ability to strip the ball once a WR gets his hands on it, tackled well. Kid looked like he was shot out of a Cannon making that tackle short of the first down on the Pats opening drive of the second half. For a rookie CB, with so little CB experience, he showed a lot to be excited about reminding us of the player we saw in the Jets win… Also great to see Maxwell respond with a solid game. We will need those two down the stretch
    .
    8) FINALLY we saw flashes Of the Gamebreaking ST unit we saw last year. Fipps unit has to show up and have a Big final 4 games of the season
    .
    9) great to see Kendricks fly around making plays again and Kiko actually had a pretty game the first 3 quarters, today chip admitted they played him way too much, and it showed with his dip in 4th quarter play. Clearly Kiko ISNT firing on all cylnders yet, but he is starting to come on for us. If he can put the leg injuries behind him, i still have total confidence in him being one of our best young players..Like Bradford, we need Kiko to have a healthy offseason instead of rehabbing all offseason again,,
    .
    10) and My Favorite, CHIP FINALLY started to hold giys accountable with the benching of Austin and benching of Murray for a lot of the game

Unfortunately this means NOTHING if we don’t build on it this week and perform against the Bills

No, I believe Boykin hasn’t played enough snaps even if he played all the last 4 games to move us up to a 4th rounder..so it will still be a 5th. i think he had to play 50% on the season

  599. 599 Joe Minx said at 5:36 PM on December 7th, 2015:

It seems a little more than coincidental that they just started playing him now that he couldn’t possibly play enough snaps to trigger that number. I’m left to seriously believe they didn’t play him just so they wouldn’t have to give up that 4th. Which is absolutely dumbfounding if so.

  601. 601 CHRIS said at 5:47 PM on December 7th, 2015:

That would be pretty bad management on their part, to bench a good player for more than half a season to save one round in the draft next year. It is very coincidental timing but I have a really tough time believing any coach would make the call to bench a starter for half a season just for that. But, I guess you never know.

Pretty sure they just changed up the CBs because of that.

  605. 605 Neil said at 7:12 PM on December 7th, 2015:

Or they thought the upside of playing him wasn’t worht losing the pick, because he didn’t look that grat in practice.

Not surprising when you add a dude at the end of training camp and he has no idea how your scheme works heading into the season.

  606. 606 D3FB said at 7:07 AM on December 8th, 2015:

They traded for Boykin on the eve of camp so he was there for all of training camp. Ross Cockrell who they got off of waivers after he didn’t survive the first waive of cuts in Buffalo has been playing over him so “not having time to adjust” isn’t a valid reason.

  607. 607 MaggiesHope said at 7:13 PM on December 7th, 2015:

Especially since the Steelers, or any other team, are focussed on WINNING. Which means playing whoever gives the team the best chance of doing so.

  608. 608 FairOaks said at 7:30 PM on December 7th, 2015:

Except that since it was 50% of the snaps, they could have started playing him in game 9 most likely without risking that. This was game 12.

It seems ridiculous given the poor quality of CBs they had, but sometimes a coach gets fixated that a particular player is better for his scheme. Like, to pick a random example, that Bradley Fletcher was better than Nolan Carroll despite all evidence to the contrary.

  609. 609 GermanEagle said at 4:05 PM on December 7th, 2015:

  610. 610 Gian GEAGLE said at 4:29 PM on December 7th, 2015:

Lol wonder how he was acting in the locker room responding to being benched…
    ..
As of Today, BOTHA Bradley Fletcher and Sconces are unemployed,,
    ..
We signed Jaylen Watkins when Nolan got hurt, instead of signing Brad Fletcher the guy who started the last two years for us lol… That says it all…

  611. 611 Gian GEAGLE said at 4:27 PM on December 7th, 2015:

we gave ourselves a chance to win yesterday because our front 7 played up to its potential giving Brady a beating, and it was great to see our tackles Peters and Lane step up and keep Chandler Jones and Ninkovich in check, giving bradford a chance to have a clean game taking care of the ball. No surprise that we are at our best when we are forcing turnovers and SAM takes care of the ball.
    ..
If This Team is serious about Salvaging this season and win the division, we will need the DL and our Front 7 to carry us. It’s the strength of our roster and they need to step up and lead this team to erase the memories of last years DECEMBER Collapse.
    ..
No secret that Shady is going to try to rip our hearts out on Sunday. Front 7 has a chance to be a major component of the victory if they are able to shut down Shady. If he can’t get it going, you know he is going to be frustrated and lose control on the sideline.. It’s also crucial thatour Discaplined pass rush get after the QB as a cohesive unit, cut off Tyrod’s escape route and keep hiim in the pocket. The Pass rush has to do its part because they can’t give Sammy Watkins all the time in the world to carve us up… Hopefully we are able to get out to a nice lead, turn them 1 dimensional and force Tyrod to throw 40 times.
    ..
We have two games at home against Tyrod Taylor and Cousins, QBs who NEED the run game working to be successful. If we can shut down shady and Morris early and force Kirk Cousins and Tyrod to throw 40 plus times on the road, we give ourselves a great chance to win those two games. cousins has been a mess on the road, take away his run game and force him to beat us, and our defense should open the turnover faucet and continue to see the skins winless on the road. Take shady out of thegame, keep Tyrod in the pocket, make him throw 40 times, and im not sure those QBs can win throwing 40 plus times on the road… But we need to get back to our early season run defense for that to happen
    .
cardinals is the toughest game left on our schedule. They like to go down field with their weapons, which means Palmer needs a little time for the routes to unfold, the front 7 has to capitalize and BATTER him punishing them for taking shots down field at us. Palmer ismt as Tough as Brady, so we HAVE to give Palmer a similar beating that we gave Brady… We usually play Bruce Arians tôugh, so I expect a close game decided by a mistake or two, so it’s a game where we need to be sharp across the board, we can’t have mistakes from giys like Sturgis missimg a kick, Bradford throwing a Pick, a WR dropping a key ball.. It’s going to be a close game where mistakes are magnified, but the Cardinals have an Offensive Line with Chinks in its armor that our front 7 will hopefully exploit
    .
For me, the Giants game is the ONLY game I would bet on us to win simply because we OWN the Giants at the Line of scrimmage, and their OL continues to get weaker and weaker. I don’t think they have the horses to block us,and they know it, whichis why Eli’s mistakes are inevitable against us, and if they are mathematically eliminated the final game, I think we will see them quit like the Eagles quit on Andy reid when they knew it was his last game as an Eagle.
    .,
So I feel confident that we will beat the Giants, but probably will need to beat the Skins, and win at least 1 out of the bills and Cardinals.. It will take a 3-1 finish if we want to contol our own destiny and GUARENTEE a division win… But at the very least, we will need to go 2-2 beating our two division rivals.
    .
The Pats win didn’t solve all our problems and transform us into a playoff team, we have a lot of work ahead of us, but I like that our opponents DONT have the best Offensive lines, so it’s up to the Front 7 to step up and be the strength of this Eagles team that we know they are capable of being..
    ..
If Fletcher Cox plays 4 more games like he played yesterday,he gives our defense a chance to Thrive… BARWIN, Curry, BG, Kendricks DONT have all the success they had yesterday without Cox being so disruptive chasing Brady around the field..
    .
ITs time for the Front 7 to step up, lead us, and secure its spot at one of the top young front 7’s in the game… Operation SHUT DOWN SHADY is first on the itinerary,

Shady hates contact – Eagles D needs to use every opportunity to make clean, legal hits every play on Shady in order to neutralize his effectiveness. Also, Billy D needs to spy Tyrod from the start.

Agree about Front 7 imposing their will – secondary needs to mind their coverage communication(s) and not surrender easy gains or 3rd and long conversions as well.

  707. 707 ChoTime said at 12:26 AM on December 8th, 2015:

The Sixers lost by 51 points even though the Spurs sat three of their best players. That’s like the Patriots resting Brady, Gronk, and Edelman and still beating the Eagles by six touchdowns.

  708. 708 FairOaks said at 12:37 AM on December 8th, 2015:

I’m not a big basketball fan, but I’m actually more interested in the Sixers that I have been in years (decades really) because of the approach. It’s more interesting to watch young players improve and gel rather than retreads and bad trades for veterans, which the Sixers have done basically since the 1980s.

The product on-court should have been better this year though. It was hampered by injuries (some of which were known in the offseason), giving the team a horrid makeup — no PG, and no scoring early in the year other than Okafor. They have actually had the lead in most 4th quarters lately, but have come up stunningly small (the PGs they have had get awful in crunch time it seems). Okafor and Noel separately are good, but together don’t work yet. It’s a bad mix. They are just getting their PGs back from injury and Covington can score a bit so they should hopefully be more competitive, but it has been ugly at times.

Granted, against the good teams from the west, they are hopelessly outclassed at this point. They had a good defense at least last year but Okafor and a couple of the other new players damage that.

  709. 709 RobNE said at 8:44 AM on December 8th, 2015:

Sixers are injured. Just like last year they will go on a relative “run” and watch, the Lakers will have the worst record. I just smile at all these losses. If you are going to tank, freakin tank. Missing on the first pick the past two years hurts the team and the rebuild. Don’t screw it up by letting the Lakers out tank you.

I’m not suggesting the guys try to lose, just that I want them to lose.

  714. 714 FairOaks said at 11:32 PM on December 7th, 2015:

So Dallas chooses to not run time off the clock, scoring quickly, and gives Washington over a minute (and with their two timeouts) to tie it. Would three runs up the middle have been better, then kick the FG with little time left?

That might have been the most comical last 90 seconds of football ever.

First Jaccpot fumbles the PR after running backwards 20 yards.

Then McFadden runs out of bounds instead of going down.

Then McFadden scores instead of going down at the 1.

Then the Cowboys give up a huge KR and have a facemask penalty tacked on.

Then they let Jaccpot get behind them and score a fast TD.

Then Lucky Whitehead gets a huge KR.

We all deserve each other here in the NFCEast.
