Game Preview – Pound the Patriots

I would love to see the Eagles beat the Patriots today. But that doesn’t seem very likely. The Pats are 10-1 and have Tom Brady. The Eagles are 4-7 and don’t have Tom Brady.

I wrote my game preview for PE.com on the challenge of playing the Patriots.

After seeing the debacle on Thanksgiving, I’m just curious to see how the Eagles play today. I think they will look very different than the last 2 games. I’m not predicting a win, but I expect the team to play with more energy and more attitude.

We know the inactives for the game.

QB Thad Lewis
RB Ryan Mathews
WR Miles Austin
OL Tanner Hawkinson
OL Barrett Jones
DL Cedric Thornton
DB Denzel Rice

Bennie Logan has a last minute knee injury which could affect him today. He’ll play, but we need to see how he does. I think it is good that Brandon Bair is active. His ability to block passes could be useful today.

New WR Jonathan Krause is active in place of Austin. I’m looking forward to seeing what he can do. Krasue wears #10.

This is a game the Eagles can win. Obviously a lot would need to go right for them. And they need some players to step up. Maybe Eric Rowe will be a revelation at CB. Maybe Krause will be a great fit for the offense. Maybe the return of Sam Bradford will make a huge difference.

There is no question that the Patriots are the better team. The Eagles just need to find a way to come out on top on the scoreboard this afternoon.

Is there magic in the air or are we getting 3 hours of cold, hard reality?

    Even Dave Spadaro just now said ‘a move that you completely understand’ when talking about Austin’s inactive status today. Spadaro did add that they had expectations that Austin ran good routes last year, would be a good influence on the clubhouse and the young WRs, and be a key possession WR on 3rd down.

    It was a huge mistake by Kelly to not cut Austin the day after the Dolphins game given his effort and comments after the game. A contending team can’t tolerate that kind of open questionable effort and lackadaisical reaction when questioned about it.

    I’ll admit I doubt that single move would have turned around the season but do you think Belicheck remotely tolerates something like that? I guaranteed he would released Austin the day afterwards to send a clear message.

    Not a ‘rule by fear’ manager-style at all but when a veteran player is that openly lackadaisical and indifferent to his performance in a key spot, you need to do something to set the tone.

    Except we didn’t have anyone on the roster to bench him for. We finally did that, but I’m sure Kelly wanted to see the guy in practice for a bit before he made the move.

    You pick someone up at that point. Austin had performed so poorly at that point & wasn’t a contributor on special teams.

    I think he only got really bad the last three games. He had the dropsies like everyone else, and passes did not seem to be caught enough when targeted, but I don’t think there was nothing which indicated a lack of effort before the last couple of games — he was struggling like all of our receivers; he didn’t stand out that way. But not doing the toe tap in the end zone, the not turning around for passes… eugh. Bringing in a veteran guy was a good idea but this one hasn’t worked out.

    Indeed. Austin’s contributions on a scale of 1-10 rate what? A -2? He may not have the speed and athleticism he once did, but on the other hand he also brings inconsistency, questionable effort, and stupidity to the table. It’s hard to believe some hungry practice squad kid could be worse.

    so Todd Bowles has to live with Marshall filming inside the NFL once a week, small price to play for a WR that Elevates your QBs play.. Would Chip Ever go with a guy like brandon Marshall? Sure hopes so..

    eh, yea he’s a talented guy, but you could argue he lost the game for Jets against us with that dumb lateral and a couple weeks ago when they played the Pats he had a drop in the end zone which would have iced the game for the Jets W, Pats ended u coming back to win

    If I’m Belichick, I’m going to go for the really fast start. Twist the knife early and often and look to get the Eagles to fold and give up by 2nd quarter.

    If we somehow manage to get to halftime keeping it close, that would be a major boost.

    Gianfs just lost, Id rather see the Eagles play with some fuckin heart for the first time in the past month, but we probably will make too many mistakes to be able to steal this game even if we play with Heart…if you are hoping for a loss, you probably will get your way

    Granted what Jeff Fisher has done with Foles this year, it may take more than one season to get those habits out of Bradford.

    I want to draft a QB this year for sure. It’s just that you aren’t guaranteed of getting a real QB there either. Some years, there isn’t one in the entire draft.

    I think his upside is better than Alex Smith, though not dramatically. He’s got the arm to throw it downfield but doesn’t often enough. I don’t love him but he’s still slowly improved all year. He just started much worse than I expected.
