2nd Half – PHI 21 , NYG 20

Posted: January 3rd, 2016 | Author: | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 720 Comments »

What is wrong with this team?

In a “must lose game” the Eagles have a long TD run by DeMarco Murray, a TFL by Kiko Alonso and a sack by Marcus Smith. How are you supposed to lose a game when that stuff happens?

Pat Shurmur needs to give a spirited “53 Mediocre Men” speech at halftime. Focus on Jordan Matthews big drop, Sam Bradford’s INT and porous run defense. Ask for more of that. Plead if you must. Let them know what is on the line and that winning simply isn’t an option.

Go Giants!!!

Sometimes you gotta just let guys play and figure it out. Especially if they have talent. I have a feeling that it has had something to do with the Kelly/Roseman who drafted who argument.

Yea im all for big egos unless they get in the way of actually trying to win

If that’s the case, then Kelly may be the pettiest HC in Philadelphia since Buddy Ryan.

Watching him on tape, the athleticism still jumps out. Unfortunately, so does the fact that he’s only now starting to figure out which way to run. Still hope he turns into a solid player.

True, but experience is the best teacher there. Lack of playing time and getting bumped from position to position really hurt his development.

  41. 41 Jarock said at 2:45 PM on January 3rd, 2016:

    Positives this season.
Rowe looks like a solid pick.
MS2 has showed a pulse after being invisible for his first two seasons.
Safety play has been better than it has in the last 1/2 decade or more.

    Negatives.
Sam has played just well enough to convince a few idiots he’s a decent QB while still losing the majority of games.
OL lived up to all of the concerns.
Front 7 outside of Cox has underperformed drastically.

  42. 42 Gian GEAGLE said at 2:48 PM on January 3rd, 2016:

In fairness to MS2, he hasn’t exactky been given much opportunity to Fail yet.. I hope to get the chance to see him and judge for myself, since Chip ismt the most reliable source these days

  43. 43 Howie Littlefinger said at 2:48 PM on January 3rd, 2016:

    Don’t get the Bradford hate

He will not out right win us games but I would also say he doesnt lose us games. He is a notch above guys like Alex Smith and Fitzpatrick in my eyes

  44. 44 Jarock said at 2:52 PM on January 3rd, 2016:

I know Alex Smith won’t win any Fantasy leagues, but he’s shown he can consistently win games both at SF and KC.

As to Bradford . . . for 2/3 or more of this season, we should have just punted on 3rd and 7 or more. Bradford threw so many swing passes without even glancing down the field in this situation it soured me on him completely. No courage. None. Just wanted to pad his completion stats with no situational awareness whatsoever.

  45. 45 Howie Littlefinger said at 2:54 PM on January 3rd, 2016:

And when he threw deep our ass hole receivers just dropped it. Not saying the guy is al world but as qb all u can do is get the ball there. He can make ALL the throws which Smith cannot

Bradford would look much better throwing to Maclin too, our guys have worse hands than JPP

  46. 46 Jarock said at 2:56 PM on January 3rd, 2016:

Can’t argue this much. I do wonder though about Bradford’s receivers consistently topping the charts for dropped passes now both in Philly and St. Louis. Still doesn’t excuse his lack of willingness to even try to find someone down the field on 3rd and long. He’s been slightly better the last third of the season, but it was too little too late imho.

  47. 47 Howie Littlefinger said at 2:58 PM on January 3rd, 2016:

No talent in St louis at all. Full disclosure: I used to call him Badford

Philly seems to just shoot itself in foot. If we keep Bradford I get it. If we move on I get it. Either way Bradford earned my respect this year

  48. 48 FairOaks said at 2:57 PM on January 3rd, 2016:

He’s been getting better at that lately though. I’m more interested in what he will do next year — i.e. is this progress real and can he get even better — rather than what he did earlier in the year, coming off two ACLs and 1.5 years away from the game.

  49. 49 Howie Littlefinger said at 2:45 PM on January 3rd, 2016:

We hired a specialist to tell us when to challenge the ball and we still couldn’t get it right… I’m sure Lurie was furious at how bad the team was, after how much LURIE forced Chip to invest paying for an enormous staff and sports science department yet we show up looking like crap each week…

  60. 60 Greg Richards said at 2:47 PM on January 3rd, 2016:

    Unfortunately, that’s not a fumble.

  61. 61 Howie Littlefinger said at 2:49 PM on January 3rd, 2016:

  62. 62 Greg Richards said at 2:53 PM on January 3rd, 2016:

Nope. Refs must hate us. Call a fumble on what’s not a fumble in a game where we’re essentially playing for the division and not having the decency to call a fumble an on what’s not a fumble when we’re playing for draft position.

We all know Biggers was the one leading, Odells a bitch

  144. 144 Greg Richards said at 3:05 PM on January 3rd, 2016:

Jets are going to blow their playoff chances. Steelers are a dangerous team.

  145. 145 JoeBlow said at 3:06 PM on January 3rd, 2016:

i went to a Jets message board and apparently the receiver keep dropping passes and Revis can’t cover Sammy Watkins

  146. 146 Jarock said at 3:05 PM on January 3rd, 2016:

Taylor Hart with the play . . . 4 yards down the field. Looks more and more like a complete waste of a pick.

  147. 147 Gian GEAGLE said at 3:06 PM on January 3rd, 2016:

Sadly I haven’t seen him make many plays.l

  148. 148 Jarock said at 3:06 PM on January 3rd, 2016:

Funny how he gets playing time when MS2 hasn’t. Pretty sure they’ve made about the same # of plays.

  149. 149 Gian GEAGLE said at 3:13 PM on January 3rd, 2016:

Even worse, there were games he played more than Curry… I thought Bair may be better than Hart

bennie making it clear he’s necessary for this d.

  151. 151 Jarock said at 3:17 PM on January 3rd, 2016:

Really makes a huge difference for this team. So much better against the run with him in. Not sure how much of it is the snowball of needing Taylor to play more and just how much is them missing his play. Still, get well soon, Benny.

  152. 152 Howie Littlefinger said at 3:15 PM on January 3rd, 2016:

The only time I remember him coming close to making a play he tackled himself

  154. 154 A_T_G said at 3:06 PM on January 3rd, 2016:

This is the right time for Kendricks to get matched up in single coverage against a WR with no help over the top.

LOL. Was Kiko supposed to cover ODB in the slot?

  161. 161 Jarock said at 3:08 PM on January 3rd, 2016:

Don’t expect blanket coverage, but he should be able to stay closer than that. You’d also hope he could at least get a jam.

  162. 162 John Galt said at 3:07 PM on January 3rd, 2016:

Kiko against Beckham. That billy can scheme it up

  163. 163 Greg Richards said at 3:08 PM on January 3rd, 2016:

  195. 195 Jarock said at 3:20 PM on January 3rd, 2016:

Would like to see them mix it in, but not depend on it. When Benny and Ced were healthy, it was almost impossible to run on this D. Mix it up more and it would be an absolute nightmare to play against. Way too damn predictable under Billy.

  255. 255 Jarock said at 3:27 PM on January 3rd, 2016:

Not to mention, he’s going to be so overpriced. Someone’s going to pay him as if he was an elite QB and I don’t remember him having a single winning season (would need to check and I’m too lazy @ the moment.)

  256. 256 FairOaks said at 3:29 PM on January 3rd, 2016:

Nope. But of course the Eagles WRs this year are the best he’s played with probably. The Rams were a very bad team.

I do worry about the contract demands. Eagles could franchise him and take all the other teams out of it. He’s played well and is worth a lot, but I’d rather not huge guaranteed money or any contract we can’t get out of in two years.

  257. 257 Jarock said at 3:32 PM on January 3rd, 2016:

Combine that with what they gave up to acquire him. If it’s only for a one year rental, it goes from overpriced to completely horrendous. I don’t want him back, but from a ‘what we paid to get him’ it really doesn’t make sense to let him go. Still don’t want him though.

not sure why people keep saying how we’ll have to overpay bradford… it does not matter one bit. if you have a chance to get a decent qb (not even great), you need to pay the guy. you CANNOT win games without one so you just have to make it work with the remaining cap.

That one Bradford miss that sucks out to me was the bomb last week he over shot to Ertz. He got utterly decimated on that with pressure up the middle

  468. 468 FairOaks said at 4:42 PM on January 3rd, 2016:

We had those issues as well. And were required to run it wide with Murray a lot of the time which basically gave you two downs to get 10 yards.

He’s been good, and consistently good, the last seven games. Thought he started turning it around vs Carolina though the stats were bad — that was when he began to get some accuracy. He was actually playing really well against Arizona, but his rating took a big tumble at the end of the game as he gambled more and got another INT. I think his rating was 120+ for quite a while that game. The turnovers just killed us.

The points are an issue. Giants are bad yes but he only had a 61 rating last time we played them — he was part of the offensive problem still at that point. 108? today. It would help if we saw a game where the team really racked up points. Today was good but still just 28 points for the offense.

He’s certainly passing the eye test, but yes, you would like to see more consistency on offense. But that may not happen without better weapons. The decision is not clear-cut but I don’t think we’d do better anywhere else in free agency, or from the sounds of it the draft.

  469. 469 Howie Littlefinger said at 4:09 PM on January 3rd, 2016:

  518. 518 Greg Richards said at 4:18 PM on January 3rd, 2016:

You transition tag him and lock him in to 1 year at $17-$17.5M. Typically when team transition tags a player it either prevents other teams for negotiating with the player or you basically let another team negotiate for you and then match. No poision pills are allowed anymore. I don’t see any other team offering him an outlandish contract that the Eagles wouldn’t match. If they do, well you have Sanchez and the draft and realize you’ll probably suck next year.

  519. 519 FairOaks said at 4:21 PM on January 3rd, 2016:

Cap is going up, so he will, on a multi-year deal, for sure. I think the Eagles offered that before the season. But I’d hope the cap hit in the first year isn’t much more than that. They can add on high unguaranteed years at the end of the deal to get the average up closer to 20 if they want. It’s the guaranteed money which is the issue, and yes, Condon generally does not cave on that.

We could franchise him to take other teams out of it. Transition tag if we are prepared to pay full market price whatever that is.

Pat Shurmur on interviewing for HC: I guess we’re going to meet here in the near future.

  560. 560 Iskar36 said at 4:22 PM on January 3rd, 2016:

I can’t blame anyone on the team for losing. Th ose guys are not focused on draft picks and stuff like that. They are out there trying to win and do their jobs at the best of their ability. With that said, winning this game absolutely sucks. There is no benefit to winning it. There is no silver lining. It just hurts this team moving forward.

  561. 561 oreofestar said at 4:22 PM on January 3rd, 2016:

  564. 564 Howie Littlefinger said at 4:27 PM on January 3rd, 2016:

Worse case scenario we won today and nobody important got hurt.

Also incredibly funny and encouraging :

    Demarco with big run
    Ertz caught EVERYTHING
MS11 can actually make plays when he’s allowed on field

  565. 565 Iskar36 said at 4:27 PM on January 3rd, 2016:

In all honesty, how? We played plenty of backups. He didn’t do anything over the top to sell out to win this game. He played the game rather than flat out tanking it, which you can’t blame him for. That is his job. I have no issue with what Shurmur did.

  577. 577 Iskar36 said at 4:31 PM on January 3rd, 2016:

We will see what happens moving forward, but he has had opportunities to play in his two years here and has done nothing in 31 out of 32 games. I’m going to lean towards trusting those other 31 games for now before putting any faith that he can contribute moving forward.

  578. 578 Allen3000 said at 4:25 PM on January 3rd, 2016:

Oh absolutely. I could never in good faith as a player or coach intentionally give less than my best. You can’t fault the players or coaches at all. Just sucks that we lose that many spots in the draft. Then again if your front office takes a guy like Brandon Graham over Earl Thomas or trades up for a Jerome McDougal it doesn’t really make a dofference.

I think that, regardless of who the new HC is, shurmur has to stay in some capacity. guy seems to work well with sam, andt seems like we won’t be picking high enough to take a shot a lynch or goff, so sam seems like the best option. slowly warming up to getting a defensive hc and keeping shurmur on board to run the offense, which looked much better today than at any point I can remember this yaer. I don’t care that the giants are the worst defense in the league, I think that with another weapon or two and some fresh blood on the o-line, the eagles could be a pretty darn good offense. as for the d, well they need some work, to say the least

Yeah, but who? if we keep sam, I think(at least) that we need to invest HEAVILY in the o-line, and that means first rounder to me. So that means that we’d need a second-third round find. I don’t know enough about the depth of the qb class to know if a find like that is potentially out there. But I agree, if the money is not crippling, you keep sam and then get a QB to develop.

your not going to fill all the holes with one draft….even if we do go heavy with o-line it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s going to improve….if the rookies end up starting, they are still rookies and the line needs to develop a cohesivness

  669. 669 George said at 5:03 PM on January 3rd, 2016:

Well I am of the opinion that the line needs an overhaul. JP, while good, needs to be dealt of moved inside. Land needs to swing over to lt, and kelce can stay. Everybody else needs to be a backup. We can use maybe 1-2 rookies, but other than that we should sign some middle of the road, servicable vets and build around lane, kelce, and a high draft pick.

As for wentz, I need to look atr him. admittedly, I haven’t seen much of him,and need to look at him and see if I think he is franchise material after a few years of tutelidge.

not over him……to groom behind Bradford

  674. 674 George said at 5:10 PM on January 3rd, 2016:

we’ll see. Like i said, i need to see him play, and given that he played at a non-fbs school, I need to see him in some sort of all star team, but he’s big, he has a big arm, and certainly looks the part, but I need to see if he can be developed or if he is at a d1aa school for a reason

  675. 675 JoeBlow said at 5:14 PM on January 3rd, 2016:

his team is in the FCS championship game on Jan 9, but i don’t think he is playing…..he injured his wrist in mid-october and was only supposed to be out 8 weeks

As for o-line the FA pool isn’t too hot…..Just guys you will have to overpay for or more Dennis Kelly types

  676. 676 George said at 5:15 PM on January 3rd, 2016:

yeah, i know, but maybe we can find another mathis type, or at least somebody who is serviceable for a few years so we don’t have 2-3 rookies on the o-line

  677. 677 Insomniac said at 4:53 PM on January 3rd, 2016:

This year’s QB class is potentially as bad as the year Ponder, Locker, and Gabbert were drafted.

  678. 678 anon said at 4:53 PM on January 3rd, 2016:

gotta stick w/ sam, concentrate on ol or another WR. not worth wasting first on a qb w/ no o-line, i think you have to keep sammy b

  679. 679 myartz04 said at 4:55 PM on January 3rd, 2016:

Keep Sam. OL OL OL. Need some pass rush too

  680. 680 George said at 4:56 PM on January 3rd, 2016:

we have rushers in a 43

  682. 682 anon said at 4:56 PM on January 3rd, 2016:

Honestly — looking at the roster chip left he did a pretty good job in 3 years of fixing the roster. still a couple of pieces away but the roster feels younger. have a qb, etc.

  683. 683 Dragon_Eagle said at 5:00 PM on January 3rd, 2016:

You’re joking right? Roster got significantly older under Chip. See Kempski’s posts on age. We lost top talent (DJax, McCoy, Mathis) and we now have serious holes in places that were good when Chip got here – OG, OT, WR. Defense got better with experience along Dline, but other than that. I don’t see any other area of improvement. Maybe K if Parkey returns healthy.

  684. 684 Dragon_Eagle said at 5:02 PM on January 3rd, 2016:

Oh, Safety improved. Will give you that, but team is in worse shape than the team that ended 4-12 3 years ago. That team had plenty of major injuries to point to and were playing a rookie QB.

  685. 685 anon said at 5:04 PM on January 3rd, 2016:

defense is WAY better in terms of talent now.

  686. 686 JoeBlow said at 5:06 PM on January 3rd, 2016:

we’ll get younger if we cut Peters, Ryans, Celek

  687. 687 anon said at 5:03 PM on January 3rd, 2016:

can’t keep all those guys – djax, mccoy, maclin, mathis (Who is 35 btw and rotating w/ an udfa)

if ck didn’t flub on murray, we have a lot of younger guys and cheap FAs. Just need a coach that can get them to play well.

have the best safety tandem we’ve had in 10yrs.

  693. 693 truehaynes said at 5:07 PM on January 3rd, 2016:

Shift Peters to guard. Move lane to left tackle. Sign the best guard available. Draft a big mauling rt in the first round. 3 rd round picks go for a nickle db and a big raw wr who could eventually start. I want another outside cb but were stuck with Maxwell for atleast another year. Shift to the 4-3 and this defense could be nice.

  694. 694 anon said at 5:08 PM on January 3rd, 2016:

max, rowe and carroll gives you 3 guys you can rotate, dime looks a lot better.

plus don’t have to burn a ton of picks on dbs again, i’d be looking at burning those picks on ol/wrs

  695. 695 FairOaks said at 5:09 PM on January 3rd, 2016:

Carroll is a free agent. Injury might bring down his price though. We will get Shepherd back.

  698. 698 Dragon_Eagle said at 5:09 PM on January 3rd, 2016:

I want 2 OL within first 3 picks. Cut Peters. He’s been great, but we need to build a new OL around Lane and Kelce.

  699. 699 anon said at 5:11 PM on January 3rd, 2016:

i think peters plays better w/out tempo. i think you get a later round /udfa to groom but i think peters will be better than replacement level next year. played really well this game.

  700. 700 Dragon_Eagle said at 5:14 PM on January 3rd, 2016:

Well, I’m all for the full on rebuild next year. Shed all the old guys – Meco, Peters, Celek, Bair, & Barbre. Trade back, get more picks. Load up on OL in particular. Use FAs to fill holes with journeymen. No big signings (unless its a top OT).

  701. 701 truehaynes said at 5:22 PM on January 3rd, 2016:

I think you have to convince Peters to take a pay cut and move to guard. Otherwise try and trade him for a late round pick
