I Love Jim Schwartz

2 great videos on the Wide-9 and his thoughts on defense
Great stuff.
I’ll discuss some of it later. Just go watch them for now.
*****
I posted some draft notes from the Shrine Game over at ScoutsNotebook.
It is very possible I wrote about a guy named Vern(on).
_
Great hire!
The thing with Schwartz is that unless he gets another shot at a head coaching gig, he’s probably going to be here for a while. Look at how long he was DC for the Titans and how successful they were on that side of the ball. Follow that up with the Lions and Bills defense success, it would be a shocker if he ever was fired for performance as DC. He has proven to be successful with a myriad of players over a long period of time. I am very excited with him here.
Plus, he must realize that he has young talent here. If things shake out correctly, this could be a top 5, 10 defense for the next several years.
Needs a special outside rusher to make the defense go from good to great. Curry probably plays DT on 3rd down with Cox, and Graham and Barwin are good (but not great) outside guys.
Think we will be in that ranked in 5-15 range depending on injuries and how we adjust to the new scheme in the first year.
Schwartz is such a charismatic guy that i think he will get another HC chance. yes teams focus on Offensive coaches currently and Detroit suffered with poor discipline and failed to contend with some elite talent (megatron+Suh) they had available to them but that organisation has struggled to build consistently for decades and i think with time people will forgive them more.
I think Schwartz will be a HC again, but one point I think will be important is that Schwartz might be a little selective when it comes to jobs. Its happened a couple of times that coordinators chose to stay in place, and if the rumors about us paying Schwartz very well, i’m guessing that if say the Browns or the Raiders want to hire him in 2 years and they’re still, well a mess,he might rather stay here a year or 2 longer and wait for the right position to open up.
He’s probably holding out for the Titans’ next HC opening. Couldn’t be more than a couple years from now…
From the Senior Bowl notes:
Wilson also had a stronger, thicker build. One concern with Adams, because of his size, is durability. He missed time this year with a broken finger and then had to leave the bowl game after a hit to the head.
Does a thicker build prevent finger and head injuries?
Not specifically, obviously. But the point is that Wilson hasn’t missed an NFL game and Adams couldn’t make it through one FBS season. Some bodies can take a pounding and some can’t.
T-Law:
How ’bout this . . .
Russell Wilson is short.
Vernon Adams is small.
Big difference.
Small sample size for Adams, though. Either way, those aren’t the usual injuries attributed to being small-framed.
Finger injuries can happen to anyone, but i do think smaller QB’s are more likely to get concussions if they are sacked just because the momentum and size difference is bigger.
On an unrelated note, I am so glad I upgraded to a commercial John Deere snow blower 5 years ago. We got 31 inches here and my driveway is very large (probably can fit 10 cars) and it still took me less than an hour. Everyone out there still clearing snow, be safe and don’t overdo it.
You anywhere near Baltimore? I have 5 bucks and a bag of Cheetos.
Nope, Lehigh Valley. If I was closer and it was Cool Ranch Doritos, I’d be there.
Does Megan know?
She is willing to share me with a good DC.
Hearing Schwartz all I think about is how the hell did Andy expect Jaun to know all this when he strapped him with the wide 9.
Ha totally agree, wide 9 needs to be an entire defense philosophy that needs every level of the defense to adjust to it and know how to protect against its weaknesses and exploit its strengths. Juan who had some nice late night chats with JJ (who was not a wide 9 guy at all) was not in a place to make it work
Not that i love it as a 1st and 2nd down set unless you are against a Payton type offense. Think it makes sense on 3rd down but it will naturally put so much stress on your safeties that things will break down if you expect them to own a run gap and still honor the pass.
Exactly and even after making it a whole defensive philosophy it took Schwartz experience and time to make learn the weaknesses, make adjustments and fine-tune it to make it effective.
think Reid really wanted to create a Washburn defense, start with the wide-9 and the rest fits in. Washburn’s personality couldn’t be a coordinator and did not want to be. And hard to find an experienced D coach, top candidate, that would be willing to work under Washburn, have their D dictated by Washburn.
And the Wide 9 needs good linebackers to fill in the center – a position Andy Reid never seemed to be able to fill or even care about.
T-Law:
Any initial impressions from the E-W Shrine or NFLPA games on Saturday?
We will not hold you to anything you say.
My favorite quote from the videos: “Javon Kearse was a blistering bitch off the edge.” Awesome.
An oddly complimentary term for a football player.
A perfectly good reason to love Jim Schwartz though!
Yea it’s pretty good.
Funny part for me is I use Blister as a nickname for POS coworkers.
Blister….Shows up after the work’s been done.
You have the grinders that push through and just keep cranking. Then ole blister comes waltzing in about 10 minutes before the deadline or project completion. Boss walks in and rewards everyone there. Even ole blister.
I’m pretty sure I worked with the same guy.
Needs more alliteration.
was a blistering bending-at-the-ankle bitch, beating the best blimely blockers off the edge
Best DC hire since JJ. And its obvious even though he hasn’t coached a single game as an Eagle.
Not intending to hijack the thread, but here’s a game day question: Is it legit to root for the Pats to win the SB so we can brag the Eagles ruined their perfect season?
I like teams that make history and there is part of me that would prefer we lost the Super Bowl to the best dynasty/QB/HC in football history without a shadow of a doubt, and since i dislike Denver and Carolina and hate the Cards it might be least worse outcome for me.
I also like the idea of Eli having more SB than Peyton.
But I do like the Patriots losing three SuperBowls too. Puts them up there with the Bills.
Not really… SB losses hurt less when you have 4 in the bank.
yeah….
Patri*ts are evil. No.
They didn’t. The Broncos beat them first.
You guys are all right. My hatred of the Pats must have screwed up my memory and I forgot all about the Broncos game.
No, because the Broncos beat them the week before the Eagles did. So the Broncos ruined the perfect season that never was, and will hopefully end their playoff run today..
If they were 15-1 maybe
Unbelievable videos. I guy who can think like that and has Cox, Graham, Barwin, and Logan – even if we can’t sign Curry he is going to put a pass rush and defense together. And I think he has an attitude that will give the defense an identity. I’m incorrigible because I’m getting excited for 2016.
dont even say “can’t sign Curry” – that is my biggest fear this off season, would care more about losing Curry than Bradford. Think Curry could be special with an attack defense.
bb8
How is an attacking, aggressive D going to work with the offense Pederson is going to install? A conservative, ball security, low scoring offense.
Andy’s Philly offenses tended to score quickly forcing teams to throw. Then JJ defense could rush the passer relentlessly.
I think an aggressive defense and conservative offense is a good match. We’ll win a lot of low scoring games in theory.
I wouldn’t assume that Pederson is going to be that conservative.
Can’t see Bradford suddenly becoming a bombardier down the field.
Still needs to throw to someone too. Only real answer on the roster right now is Agholor.
Or spend a lot of time playing catch up.
Hope Pederson continues the Chief’s offense proclivity for few interceptions. Focus on few interceptions, nothing special, give the defense enough of a rest, then let the defense attack, create turnovers and good field position. Very, very happy with a Pederson/Schwartz combo, with Pederson being the big overview guy, the “community/player/staff relationship” guy with control of a conservative, few turnover offense.
I would be very unhappy with a Pederson offense (or what i think a Pederson offense might be) and a read/react, second fiddle to the offense type of defense.
SEND TOMMY TO THE SENIOR BOWL!
Fellow Igglesblitzarians –
It’s the time of year when our very own Tommy Lawlor stumbles out of the tobacco stalks of North Carolina on his annual trek to the Senior Bowl to scout draft prospects, haze Bryce Petty, trail a weaving Rex Ryan in his rental car, and initiate his very own power struggle with Howie Roseman on the sideline.
This will be his fifth trip to the nation’s premiere all-star event where representatives from the Eagles will scrutinize the country’s top senior talent in hopes of unearthing the next maddening disappointment (SEE Hunt, Tony). Like other bloggers, Tommy will patrol the sidelines during the practices and post his observations, but unlike the rest he won’t have the luxury of expensing his trip. That’s where we come in…
CHALLENGE: If we can generate 45 donations (one for every point Tampa/Detroit scored on us), I will donate $200 ($1 for every crushing third down drop!). Any donation, large or small, will go a long way toward helping Tommy out. Think of it as buying him a beer in exchange for his unique, on the-ground reporting that we all enjoy so much.
To participate in this year’s Senior Bowl Challenge simply click on the “Donate” button along the right hand banner of the page (underneath the “Blog Roll”), give any amount, and then reply to this comment. No need to post how much you gave, simply that you have. And if you’re unable to donate at this time, please consider an up-vote so we can get eyeballs on this son of a gun.
Hard to believe that just last year we were looking for an OT and a CB. Now we just need an OT and a CB, QB, WR, TE, GM, mascot, JUGS machine, and a defensive philosophy…

Great job, P_P_K!
Don’t comment much, but I always answer your call to support Tommy.
Very interesting talk about how the wide 9 was originally designed to take away elements of the run game, where we’ve all thought about it as a pass-targeted defense.
Listening to this, I just keep thinking about Cox. So much Cox. I can’t wait to see what happens next year. I just can’t help but feel he’s going to explode.
Someone unfamiliar with the names of Eagles players overhearing those first couple sentences…
You’re not the only one
I don’t get it?
serious?
Agree but please rephrase the 2nd half of that first sentance
More vids like this Tommy, please. The technical side of football is so freaking cool.
jesus, the broncos had all the momentum and then a stupid giveaway. It’s some kind of voodoo curse Bilicheck performs before every game.
I couldn’t tell if the whistle blew before the recovery… or do the rules allow for a clear recovery (just no advance) if it was a fumble even if the whistles were blowing?
Recovery is allowed if its clear I believe, they changed the rule like 5 or 6 years ago if I remember right.
Broncos are idiots.
should have got ipads…
from #deflategate to #billgates
broncos sure line up wide on their pass rush.
The Falcons hired Cowboys’ DBs coach as their pass defense coordinator. Sounds like his contract was up. Always nice to see the Cowgirls lose good coaches. Interesting thing is that Raheem Morris, who was thier pass defense coordinator last year, will now be the WRs coach(replacing Terry Robiskie who was hired as OC by TEN) and passing offense coordinator. So, it’s not just the Eagles who move coaches from one side of the ball to the other. Morris doesn’t have any previous experience on the offensive side of the ball. I do remember that Mike Nolan, who has been DC for a ton of teams, spent one year as WRs coach for Baltimore. In addition, Eric Mangini who’s background is as a DBs coach before becoming a DC and HC spent a year as TEs coach for the 49ers.
Have to say i love watching the Bronco pass rush, is so fun to see a team attack and disrupt so effectively.
Vinny, Fletcher, Connor and Marcus (why not?) are thinking about next season, too.
Awesome play by my boy Malik Jackson right there
I can’t remember the last time I saw the Patriots play this poorly. Lucky they’re only down 8. Watch Manning go out on a Super Bowl win.
When you combine a suspect offensive line against a quality defensive front 7, the qb is in for a long day.
and my favorite type of game
Never Count Out Touchdown Tom…
Not expecting miracles out of this defense next year. Just would be nice to see a relatively competent defensive unit all season long for the first time in severa years. Not one that notably gets weaker as the season progresses and gives up passing yards like some beginner-level video game defense at times.
The one area I could see taking a dip is the amount of turnovers the defense causes. One (and really only area) that this defense was consistent at doing generally under Davis even with personnel who I thought were a bit lacking in causing turnovers especially INTs.
Schwartz is an aggressive DC, so the TOs might stay up. At least I hope.
Broncos win this game, Von Miller better be named MVP.
https://twitter.com/SportsRadioWIP/status/691382471594651648
I sincerely hope this type of story really winds MSII up and he comes back determined to prove everyone wrong, because a headline with someone guiltily claiming responsibility for your employment has gotta sting.
He said this days ago… but I don’t think anything in the answer said he thought it was a mistake.
As bad as the Patriots have been today, I can still see them winning this game.
I think pats have 95 percent chance
I know this is from Eckel, but interesting if true.
https://twitter.com/GoEaglesNation/status/690945021583966208
No way the cut smith or huff before camp… Hart seems unlikely for same reason… Tolvin is a RFA but he has been OK as a swing tackle so I would expect the min tender as well
Eckel’s opinion only; nothing from a source. And I’d be really surprised if all of them are gone.
http://www.nj.com/eagles/index.ssf/2016/01/sam_bradford_and_other_eagles_who_wont_be_back.html#0
Isnt Huff under a cheap contract?
I don’t understand a Smith cut either, with the team moving to 43.
He’s an idiot. If you read the article though, it’s “may”. Just speculation.
I don’t disagree. I don’t know how you cover a team as long as he has, and still doesn’t seem to have a clue.
I don’t think he is an ‘idiot’ and could easy see everyone except 1-2 of these players being gone especially since it is a new coach and staff.
Looking at it… Bradford he thinks due to cap reasons (possible, though a longer-term contract would probably leave a smaller first-year cap hit making other moves possible). Sproles because he thinks we should be in rebuilding mode, and a team would give us a draft pick (sorta doubtful, and if we have a young QB, veteran receivers can be quite helpful); Huff because of the rumor garbage the other day (seriously doubt we let Huff go); Sanchez because Pederson will prefer Daniels (this seems likely to me); Tobin because Pederson will have “his guys” in that slot (er… we’d need tons of new OL talent to push Tobin off the roster); Thornton because he’s a 3-4 guy; maybe cap reasons too (we’d want him in a 4-3 — only question is can we afford him); DeMeco because he’s a cap casualty (possible); Thurmond because of affordability, and says it will be a big loss (reasonably likely); Smith (because he took Roseman’s comment to mean Smith was a mistake; given he has guaranteed $$$ no way we let him go now); Hart since he’s a 3-4 guy (this is possible but not before final cutdowns).
I think it’s too early to give up on Smith. Sproles is still huge for special teams and as a weapon.
I don’t think we need to rebuild, and I do like a lot of the talent we have. Fix the OLine and I think we’re back in the mix.
If we don’t keep Bradford we are likely in a bit of a rebuild mode. Losing Thurmond would create a hole as well… we don’t have much in the backup area at safety.
Agree with you on Smith… only way he gets released is if there are so many other good players on the roster he can’t even make it as a backup, since cutting him saves zero cap. He hasn’t really been given a chance yet. Agree on Sproles too.
Broncos should challenge the spot, that was very generous.
Nevermind then.
My god stop the Pats. Somehow.
Dumbest challenge ever, just saved patriots time out
Worse.
If Amendola had possession . . . his knee hit the ground before the ball came out.
Denver could go from INC and 4th – and -6
to COMPLETION and 1st Down Pats
Yes yes YES . That was sooooo close ha!
It was called incomplete so I don’t think it affected Patriots time outs (though it gave them a TO before the 4th down play).
Little chance of success, but it just cost them a challenge they were not going to need and a timeout they might (though they also get to rest before the 4th down play, so the TO might have been worth it anyways).
I wrongly assumed the Broncos were going to try and kill the clock
I feel Touchdown Tom is going to draw this up…
I just thought about this. Should we have a suicide watch for Media Mike? I think Cam is winning tonight.
I hate the Patriots almost as much as I hate the Cowboys.
What does it take for a intentional grounding call against pats?
Thank you! He’s had at least 4 that I’ve counted.
There have been receivers in the general area for most all of them. The refs will give QBs a fair bit of latitude when the defenders affect the pass (like has been on all of them). Brady does a better job of getting balls near receivers than Eli does, and Eli doesn’t get called for it either.
Sorry. Common sense says that when he’s throwing it and he’s almost horizontal to the ground, then it should be intentional grounding, regardless of “how close” it was to a receiver.
They used to have an “in the grasp” rule, but anyone who watched Cunningham play, that rule was even more frustrating. So, as long as you get a pass in the general vicinity of a receiver, it’s allowed (as is intentional grounding outside of the pocket) even though you know the QB is just throwing it away.
That missed extra point cost the Patriots.
Considering much of their early trips to the Superbowls and corresponding wins were because of the leg of Vinatieri, this was overdue.
Hah, fuck you Patriots.
Go cry Brady and Gronk.
My girlfriend has dubbed him Tom Bratty, now and forever.
https://twitter.com/JayGlazer/status/691097795219034112
I was pissed when Gronk came down with that lame duck in the endzone, but I guess no harm in the end, just more drama.
Great game. Instant classic.
Manning now 3-1 against Brady in conference championship games. Not what you’d expect considering the narrative.
Manning wasn’t great today but made enough plays & avoided any really hideous throws leading to INTs.
I thought for sure the Pats would take away the Broncos’ rushing attack (they did) and in the process force Manning into at least 1-2 INTs.
The backwards pass wasn’t all that good. But yes, other than that.
https://twitter.com/MarcSesslerNFL/status/691404074403540992
If that was Bradford we’d be getting on him for holding the ball too long.
Or the recievers being unable to get open
Yeah, just depends on who you’re talking about most of the time.
Well DEFINITELY for his O Line sucking.. broncs rusehed 3 all game and Pats o line was invisible
usa an idiotso
I have to give Tom his props. He took a beating but stood tough and nearly got his team a win.
https://twitter.com/DanGrazianoESPN/status/691407011863498752
Five, if you include Manning himself.
1. Manning should retire, win or lose in SB.
2. Never saw Belichick speak for as long as he did with any opposing player or coach after a loss as he did today with Manning . . . class move.
Also, today . . .
We saw two of the greatest QBs in NFL history — one at the end, the other near the end of remarkably long careers.
And two of the greatest defensive coaches in NFL history — Wade Phillips v. Belichick.
Maybe Belichick was telling him what a fucker he is and how he’s going to hire some Columbian gangbangers to slit him up in the offseason. I see that being more realistic than saying things like you played a great game or good luck in the Super Bowl.
Funny thing, Joe Banner has been pretty outspoken on Twitter that Wade is not a great DC over the past 3 or 4 hours.
Have to agree to disagree with JB.
All Phillips has ever done is coach playoff defenses. (over-statement to make a point)
Six different teams.
Crazy to think, but since 1981, he’s been a head coach 3 times, interim head coach 3 times, and a defensive coordinator for the rest of that time.
And pretty successful wherever he’s been with the players he inherited.
Never seemed to stick around in one place long enough for the GM to draft Phillips’s “players.” But had success anyway.
This Denver defense . . . very, very talented up front.
Next season, not so much.
that’s crazy. he’s a terrible HC but an amazing DC
I should be interested to watch this Panthers vs Cards game but I have almost no interest. Probably because I am largely indifferent to either team enough though Newton is interesting to watch. Ditto the Cards’ offense.
I just realized I have 0 rooting interest in this game.
arians is obnoxious?
Eh, that doesn’t do a lot for me.
wonder why cam doesnt show respect when the national anthem is on
I always wondered how he could chew gum while he played.
smartass
Lots of players don’t remove stuff from their heads, not just Cam
Broncos Panthers should be a great super bowl. 2 great defenses but I give the edge to the Panthers offense.
I do love the giving the ball to the kids after a touchdown. Just the look on their faces is amazing. That’s a story they’ll be able to tell their whole life.
100% agreed.
Hopefully that moment fades behind 54 bazillion greater moments in ther lives
Smart play by Fitz, I always wondered why more players dont do that when they know its a dead play.
2nd week in a row Carolina jumps out to a big lead on a playoff team. This team is legit.
So I’ve had a question for a while and maybe someone who knows more about football can answer this for me. Earlier the announcers said that Bruce Arians scripts his first 30 plays, and it reminded me of how Andy was notorious for scripting his first 15 plays. The thinking being that they would figure out how the defenses would play certain situations.
If everyone knows you script X number of plays though, why wouldn’t the D coordinators just prepare for that, and after X plays have been run, switch up the defenses they were calling? It seems like you’re setting yourself up for false positives by scripting.
IMO, no one cares about this post
How salty is Steve Smith when Panthers win the sb??
Ask his wife
didnt he knock her around early in his career, I may be wrong
cam had all day to wait on that guy to come open
Yep, that’s the biggest story. You give QBs all day and many of them can beat you. Palmer had a couple guys open on deep throws but was off-target — make one of those and this might be a different game.
Joe Webb on the tackle.
yeah, anothe “fake qb” who beat the eagles
That’s the Kurt Coleman I remember. Bounce.
They just said Arians thinks Fitz is the best blocking WR in the NFL. I thought that was Riley Cooper.
arians, what an idiot, coop is the best
We arent and don’t have ‘the best’ of anything
I think we need a sarcasm font. I don’t think either of us were serious about that.
That just means ya played it perfectly and i fell for it poifectly.
Nice.
Really good idea for a sarcasm signal. Ha im data rich also yo
You made a multi level sarcasm play and i only got part of it
you both are wrong, its is Huff, Cooper is number 2.
ive heard Philly mentioned multiple times this game and never in a good context.
Ive not mentioned them in good context this year either
losing davis is big for carolina.
Maybe just a stinger
or mightve broke it
Trying to be optimist…
hopefully but i think its teh wrist/hand.
I hope it just went dead/numb. Id hate for it to be broken
Panthers need a slow grinding drive here to reassert control
Dumb play by Peterson .
or awesome if he makes it. but he didnt so i agree…
No it was just a boneheaded play .
wtf, ginn could have caught htat.
He acted like he didn’t even see the ball.
I think he lost it
keep clapping and keep losing the game
That read option is an interesting play. We should try that.
carolina takes way too much time to run it, we could run it in 20 secs
Thats the old us .. we are on andy reid delay of game after a timeout speed now
If those guys didn’t waste so much time running forward with the ball , even less
College offense
McDermott’s defense is looking kinda good.
Here’s the thing there: They have a HC whose background is on the defensive side. Steve Wilks is their asst HC/secondary. The asst HC is arguably above the DC on the food chain. It’s unknown how much he contributes on the defensive side. Now, the same argument could be applied to Pederson as Reid is an offensive guy and they had an asst HC/WRs coach in David Culley. Regardless of each guys’ merits and contributions on their side of the field, success as a coordinator does not necessarily equate to having the demeanor and tools necessary to be a good HC. The Eagles obviously thinks Pedersn has them and McDermott doesn’t. At least not to the same degree.
The reasoning behind the argument that Rivera has been carrying McDermott — even though McD calls the plays on game day — would seem to apply to every coordinator in the NFL (depending which side their HC coordinated).
Save for Reid and Harbaugh . . . every HC was either an OC or DC before taking over their team.
Under the Rivera Doctrine, that would seem to mean that the performance of every OC or DC (depending on the HC’s background) is an inflated illusion.
_______________
Regarding Pederson v. McD . . . totally agree with you.
Basically unless you are on the inside and have done actual interviews with the candidates and other people around the league or have first-hand experience with them, you don’t know enough to have an educated opinion. Not that that should stop anyone from offering one.
Well in 99% of the cases hiring the hot DC/OC who works under a HC from the same side, does not work and in the case of the McDermott, we know he is a bad DC and know Rivera is a great DC.
I wasn’t suggesting McD is ready for HC, but I do believe he’s not getting enough credit because of Rivera. He was well trained here by JJ and knows his X’s and O’s. His major failing here (more so than the redzone issues), and it would have been difficult for anyone following JJ, was in leadership skills – the key factor for being a HC. Until McD demonstrates better leadership skills, he’s not HC material.
For example, I think you can make the case that McD was a better, and perhaps significantly so, coordinator than Doug Pederson. Certainly Sean has more experience. But I would take Doug as HC over Sean for “emotional intelligence” which is just a fancy facet of leadership.
panthers are damn good.
Palmer still doing his part though
just surprised by the lack of national love this year.
Everyone hates Cam, so I think that plays into it.
The guy is so full of himself I wouldn’t be surprised if he doesn’t eat.
I’m still not 100% sold on Cam if he has to make a comeback etc., but Carolina has an awesome defense, and a great OL and running game. That’s the type of team a Trent Dilfer can take to a Super Bowl, and Cam is waaaay better than that.
They play in Charlotte. Fan base is still new.
a ton of the fan base is new this year, since they started winning, if they lose, the fan base will be like, meh, who cares
I meant in general. CAR isn’t that old of a team. They don’t have generations of built in/homegrown fan base .
yep, but the majority of them are redskin fans, but yeah, you’re right, it sucks that carolina might win a sb before philly,
Blame the front office…. And hope another Cam Newton falls from Krypton
WOW PALMER FACE>
What is going on in the game? That’s like 3 straight plays with a turnover.
bench palmer.
The Carson Palmer meltdown is in full effect. We’re not winning a Super Bowl with a guy who’s upside is that.
What QB has Brady/Brees/Rodgers upside?
No one’s saying finding that guy will be easy. But we’ve got to keep trying. Committing long-term to Bradford is the NFL equivalent of the Sixers committing long term a few years back to Andre Iguodala and Elton Brand as their centerpiece players. Good enough to get you to the dance. Not nearly good enough to get you a date with the Prom Queen.
Says you
Bradford’s never won a playoff game. He’s never even made the playoffs despite playing in crappy divisions his entire career. I think I’m on pretty solid ground in doubting him.
I agree. Watching him play this year, he never made his recievers hands better. He never made the lineman block better. He never made DeMarco actually hit the holes. He never made the defense stop allowing 3rd down conversions and touchdowns. He never made the kicker not miss field goals and extra points. There is obviously nothing special about him. If there were, he would never had to rely on his teammates, he would have carried them on his back.
He didn’t get much help from his teammates. But he also threw plenty of bad picks, took plenty of bad sacks, and missed plenty of open receivers all on his own this year. When he was at his best, it was against bad defenses, and he didn’t even consistently play well against those. I never saw him make the kind of plays you need to make to actually contend for a title. He’s a middling starting QB. If he was on a cheap rookie contract and we’d only be rolling with him for another year or two to see if he’ll improve, I’d be fine with that. But committing 15% of the salary cap to a guy like that in the hopes that he finds another gear is lunacy IMO.
Many, including myself, strongly disagree with your assessment of his play and his skill set.
I don’t remember all that many bad picks of the bad-decision sort at all. Virtually none, other than maybe one or two early. Some early picks were due to his inaccuracy, something which went away late in the season. He took some sacks… slightly more than league average there. He did miss plenty of receivers.
I thought he played consistently well the last seven games, and still steadily improving, so I guess that is in the eye of the beholder — probably why I do want to keep him. If your impression of him was set early in the season, no changing that, I guess.
15% of the cap would be lunacy, but that would be $23 million. I don’t like more than 10% myself, but QB cap numbers across the league are set to take a massive jump this next year, so there is something of a market value being set. In a long-term deal, the first years are often a smaller cap hit as well, so it could be structured to not be too awful in any one year even if the numbers seem high.
On the other hand, Tom Condon has generally gotten team-unfriendly contracts for QBs, so that is a concern. Basically a Condon-Roseman battle there, and I’ll be rooting for Howie. A lot may depend on the willingness to franchise him.
Not sure that Bradford has shown that INT propensity — but he’s never shown how he plays under more pressure (one reason I really wanted to make the playoffs this year).
So yes, it’s still a projection for Bradford. If Bradford’s ceiling is how Palmer played in the regular season (not this game), it’s still good. Reasonable people can disagree on that, of course — very little has been proven.
Bradford hasn’t shown Palmer’s propensity for big plays either.
My point was that it’s extremely difficult to win with a guy who’s a fringe top-10 QB. And I think if he stays healthy that’s basically his ceiling. I’d rather cycle through a few more bad QBs looking for the right one than waste time on a mediocre one.
Hard to have big plays when your OL cant block and your WRs lead the NFL in drops
He hasn’t played his entire career with the 2015 Eagles. He’s never been better than mediocre. His best stretches of play to this point have been somewhat above average, and he’s often been worse than that and has had health problems. I’m of the opinion that making a franchise QB-level commitment to a mediocre QB is one of the worst things an NFL team can do for its long-term competitiveness and that’s exactly what we’d be doing by re-signing Bradford to the type of contract he reportedly wants. Just because the Redskins are going to be dumb and do it with Kirk Cousins this offseason doesn’t mean we have to follow suit.
His career has been with teams much much worse than the 2015 Eagles. On both sides of the ball. He’s also had a new OC basically every season of his career (and with a defensive head coach) — he’s never settled into a system, which basically every single top QB has had the chance to do. That type of thing will sabotage a QB’s numbers and results. And yet he was still playing quite well by the end of the season (balanced by an awful start to the season).
I don’t think you can base his true production in a more stable coaching environment based on anything you’ve actually seen him do. His entire career has been the “adjusting to a new system” mode, where almost all QBs (including the tippy top ones) are not as good right away.
Nope, and that is very true. Bradford was getting better about throwing the ball down the field — the YPA was creeping up all year — but that is somewhere you are projecting that Bradford will improve from what we’ve seen.
He did seem to be getting better all through the year, so if you are sold on him, you are counting on that to continue (as opposed to the end of the year just being a hot streak). I.e. you are hoping he improves to a no-question top-10 guy.
I can understand not wanting to pay big for that hope. But I can also understand not wanting to base hopes on a rookie in a year which might be more Ponder types — you swing and miss here, that search can easily take 10 or more years.
It’s extremely difficult to find top 5-7 QB and I don’t see Lurie being patient with just a relatively bad QB. It’s just not like him although there are limits on Bradford’s contract. They could go with Daniel but KC still preferred Alex Smith. It’s easy to say I want the next Tom Brady or Drew Brees but you have to have a QB in the meantime.
I think Bradford can make big plays like Palmer given a better offense. He’s right there with him if he stays healthy but again he needs better teammates and offense.
Yes, we do need a QB in the meantime. But committing to Bradford for, say, 4 years/$72 mill. prolongs that meantime. That will mean four years not quite getting there with a guy who’s not quite good enough, during which time we won’t be taking swings on finding a guy who could be a top 5-7 QB.
It all depends on how much of that is guaranteed — that is what sinks the team, not so much the overall dollar amount. I definitely would prefer a deal we can get out of after two years, without long-term cap damage. I’m not sure that Bradford has shown enough to warrant any more than that. Lots will depend on the contract he’s willing to sign, naturally. And we need to draft a QB either way.
Yeah, the guaranteed money is the big thing. I have a feeling he’s going to want quite a bit of that though.
Want, sure. But going to get?
No we don’t know what the market is for him but let’s say it’s too much, who do you want at QB? Daniel?
I think Sam is better than people give him credit for
And the typical first-round rookie QB worse……
This is just who he is. He is going to give the other defense a chance
Carson Palmer must be so frustrating for a coach. Sometimes awesome, sometimes inexplicably terrible.
Lol jesus christ carson… way to kill your momentum
So watching these games, I miss when my Eagles had a great defense like these.
why is it Kurt Coleman was so mediocre to bad when he played here but he’s a probowler somewhere else?
He isn’t responsible for a rushing lane anymore.
Has a lot of talent around him and Rivera. He has Kuechly to make tackles.
He is generally in a good position — he has a nose for the game. He will just be physically overpowered though when it comes to tackling. Happened early — running back bounced off him and got several more yards, though he did prevent a bigger gain. He did have 7 INT with the Eagles, so it’s not new.
Pat Chung is starting for the Pats.
He is a good safety when not asked to both run support and be deep like under Castillo.
The Panthers front seven is the best in the NFL
Arians talking shit down 17 points smh
Part of what makes him so appealing. I saw on one of the national sites that he’s ‘a nice guy’. Barf.
Panthers are like the Eagles teams under McNabb. Good mobile QB, nobodies at WR, solid TE, aggressive defense.
I think their WRs are decent. Ginn is downright scary
they are WR3s, 2s at best. Cam makes them good.
I bet when Avant was there, they wished they could of put his hands on Ginns body. lol
I suppose they do have Kelvin but not for this season.
Maybe Funchess can develop. I thought that was a terrible pick btw.
looks better in the second half of the season. but just like ags, i dont put much into rookie WR seasons
True. I just didn’t like him as a WR compared to some of the other guys In the draft
Man, who is that stone-handed Fitsgerald guy? Cut him.
related to Fitzgerald?
That just happened
Wow.
Maybe Ron should sit Cam for the rest of the game…
Or at least stop calling the QB draws up this much
What happened???
Cam ran for a first on 3rd and 10. And then he flies into the endzone over a guy on the next play
They just ran the same play twice in a row, and AZ couldn’t stop it.
Media Mike…
Is livid!
Cam Newton stfd’d his towel guy on a high 5 … he will be intolerable if he wins .. hard to take him
Quick, lock him up
Or make him be the face that ensures i keep never ever buying papa johns
https://twitter.com/RoobCSN/status/691441405886124034
Roob posting from all over the place.
I follow him because he does a good job picking up weird stats like this (and others).
The Eagles next year… I mean the turn around, not the 3-8-1.
Gotta believe they can improve offensivelyif Kelvin can return from his injury. I like what Shula does with their offense.
Another FitzGerald drop
Stunning. When things snowball, it seems to affect everyone. Just like the Eagles took turns screwing up this year.
wtf was going on with camera work there… wait a few seconds before you go on a break guys
Am i wrong or does Cam come across as a massive di cv k ?? Like if he was an eagle..nha i almost kept going
Yeah… what kind of guy wear cleats covered in his teammates’ names? And then he keeps shoving dirty footballs into these kids faces… he doesn’t even ask their parents if its ok.
What do you expect, he is “an entertainer and an icon”.
His cleats really? Cool. Glad to be misreading him
You’re not wrong.
https://twitter.com/JohnHayesESPN/status/691441482352463876
my math may be funny but i think he’s two wins from that…
I think the assumption is that they win this game.
agreed, just sayin. counting chickens and such.
Just the mere fact he emphasized one win when it’s obviously incorrect.
#ballhawk
um if momentum carries you into the endzone, it should be a touchback, no?
I think they decided momentum carried him to the 1 and having his face ripped off carried him the rest.
why go for two… stupid.
Trolling?
hope no one gets hurt.
dont get me wrong, i love it against arians
I guess because AZ wont let the game end
Trying to prove they aren’t a bad second-half team?
Maybe they want to run it for practice in real game time situation..
Two point conversion might cause some hurt feelings.
They don’t make band aids for that
Kind of ashame old man Fitz isn’t going to SB.
Hopefully he doesn’t get mad tonight and toss his girlfriend across the room by her hair.
Eh, he went to what should have been Dawkins, McNabb, Runyan, and Tra Thomas’ final Super Bowl seven years ago.
Im loving it..cam, and greg olsen are helping me win $700 on fanduel
And Palmer
dude just fell out of the stands…
Everyone getting Tds in carolina, Lk, Tolbert, Funchess
peyton is thinking about going on IR before the superbowl
yeah CAR gotta be a big favorite in the SB. Wasn’t this team terrible last year? Lost Greg Hardy, lost their best receiver. Should have just mad chip move his office into the lockerroom everything would have been better.
They kept their coach. The Front office isn’t a mess. And Cam put the whole city on his back
Did Rex Grossman steal Carson Palmer’s uniform?
might be matt barkely time.
Hopefully they don’t get the ball back
would have been great if there was a conditional pick that got escalated if he played a playoff game.
wow wow wow. just fucking bench him already.
hope hes not a FA , not sure you even want to bring him back after the playoff games he’s had
Just think, we had a pretty big hand in Arizona’s ultimate downfall. Carson injured his finger against us (which is clearly affecting him) and Mathieu blew out his knee on the last play of the game.
dont tell media mike
This entire situation is borderline the Moors sweeping across all of Europe and not being stopped by Charles Martel. The entire fate of Western Civilization / playing the game the right way is in the hands of the Broncos to protect.
Think Cam and the Panthers aint getting beat by any team in this play offs. Defensively they are just beastly with their turn overs, and Cam… well is playing out of his fucking mind right now.
Finger thing seems blown up. Decision making was terrible
JPP better not read this.
To add insult to injury.
https://twitter.com/RoobCSN/status/691451828609925120
woof
Coleman, Rivera, McDermott, the Eagle reject are going to the Suberbowl as heroes. When you explain to someone what it is to be an Eagles fan, this is the essence of it.
Christ on a bike… It’s so true
Since when is Rivera an Eagles reject? McDermott is the only one who was serious crap
I thought I was watching a ghost because I’m pretty sure that Coleman should have committed seppuku in shame after all of his missed tackles and blown coverages here.
https://twitter.com/RoobCSN/status/691453308737843200
Where does he get this stuff
I don’t know. He is uniquely gifted in digging up weird stuff like this.
Panthers arond since 95 and have been to more Sbs than us.
They’ve been to 3 sbs?
Really is depressing when you look at the list of teams who have been SBs all-time:
http://www.pro-football-reference.com/super-bowl/standings.htm
– t-16 with 4 other teams with 2 SB appearances
– t-20 with having never won a SB
Interesting stat for those that don’t like “running qbs”
Last 4 Sbs
cam
RW
RW
Keap
that said the counterparts have been pretty immobile.
I consider both RW and Cam legit Qbs who just happen to be able to run
… vs Manning, Brady, Manning, and Flacco. So far immobile has 2-1 record vs them.
Granted, this year Manning is a shell of his former self (otherwise that team would be unbeatable).
I wont hold my breath for manning to mention Ware and Miller
Wilson isn’t a “running QB”. He’s a Steve Young type.
I still can’t fathom when and how Carolina got this good. I mean I know Cam, Luke, Davis, good drafting and all but it was like in blink of an eye they turned in to a juggernaut.
They have generally depended on their defense, and it’s great this year. The other big thing is that they were supposed to have a suspect OL, but it looks like they figured that out as the year went along — if you give Cam all day to throw (and a good running game), it’s going to be tough.
Will be *very* interesting to see if Denver can apply pressure, and see if things look different if they do.
The OL should get a lot of credit. I’ve seen a lot of Panthers games and Cam got a lot of time. Not to mention the holes for the RBs. Just a solid team all around.
Imagine if they still had Kelvin on the other side of ginn
Last week, KC couldn’t get past NE’s o-line to pressure Brady.
This week NE couldn’t block Denver much at all.
NE could use that missing 1st on an OT
Got to clarify something as the resident north carolinian: The O has been quite good all year finishing 8th DVOA. And it is all Cam. He has been incredible, no qualifiers. Not because he had all day and a run game.
Isn’t Tommy from North Carolina?
yep, but he doesn’t need to patrol the comment section to lay down some Panthers knowledge. God knows it was bad enough watching the Panthers every week instead of the Eagles game for the majority of the weeks T.T
That offense is all Cam. I mean, Olsen and Stewart is great and their interior OL is very good, but overall that offense have weaknesses, but Cam is just so good and such a terrible matchup nightmare. Obviously Shula has done a good job, but you can’t do the same with other QB in the league. An entire scheme build around a truly unique skill set from a great, great player.
Add that to a Ron Rivera defense, with some incredibly talented players in Short, Kuechly, Davis, Norman, alongside the overall very disciplined and well coached principles of Rivera and you have a SB team.
A great QB and a at worst very good defense, thats how you win a SB.
Very disciplined and well coached defensive unit really stood out today to me since I still don’t think this is the most amazing front 7 from a pure talent perspective.
Just play very well as a unit, stick to their assignments, and cover the field very well from sideline to sideline with a lot of speed at LB.
And Kurt Coleman… that dude is ballin’!! I’m happy for him. He’s a smart team player who has capitalized on his opportunities.
Big year for Under Amour. Best NBA player. Now the best NFL player(this year) in the biggest game. People who don’t like Cam are going to be extra sick(salty) of seeing him in commercials.
Yet another reason why I’m livid Arizona lost.
Watching that Cards-Panthers game with my guest party the word mollywhopped made an appearance.
Cam gave footballs to all the kids in his sight… while carson palmer gave the ball to every defensive player in his sight
Happy the Panthers won. And the the way they won. Dominating!
Waiting for Palmer to turn back into a pumpkin . . .
And does anyone think this SB match up is going to be a remake of the Seattle-Denver SB of a few years ago?
Shocked at how bad Carolina beat up the Cards on both sides of the ball today.
It had better not be. I need a Denver win.
thomas davis broken arm – uh oh.
that was obvious when it happened.
Davis says he is going to play. I can’t think a gimp LB is going to be that effective.
What kind of break?
Reports are broken right forearm. No specifics.
Love to see the number of actual plays where the Broncos basically triple-team covered Gronk. I counted at least 3-4.
lots of jamming against timing routes — a tactic we could have used this year
‘faux press’ coverage was much more effective instead where maxwell would try to press cover and the WR would just run right by him instead.
ah yes, billy davis’ “phantom defense”
what happened to … “no more swinging gates” for receivers. Billy, go far, far away.
yet he still made some of the biggest plays of the game.
Brady was looking way too much for at times today. It was almost comical in the 2nd half.
Your right though including that huge catch on 4 & 10 to set up the TD late.
and the td
Gronk is flat out one of my favorite non-Eagles playing. He’s right up there with Russel Wilson, Richard Sherman, etc. in terms of guys who I really enjoy watching play.
The Super Bowl is going to be almost unwatchable this year. Oh well, I can take the dog out for a good run instead.
Thanks for the useless information that you won’t be watching the SB. I for one will be regardless.
Get a monkey and hump it, you douche.
The Super Bowl is going to be a defensive, grind it out, least mistakes made, masterpiece.
What makes it unwatchable? I am more interested than most years.
Scam Newton / Carolina winning would be unbearable, but the game itself would never be unwatchable.
Even you need to admit, the scam moniker doesn’t fit any more. Cam is a legit QB. He reads the defense, makes the calls, goes through progressions, and throws with accuracy, power and anticipation.
He also happens to be faster than the strong guys and stronger than the fast guys, but he could have won that game without leaving the pocket.
that whole, bigger, better, faster thing is actually a scam. he Is, in real life, slower and weaker then most… inside his shell uniform and pads, he is Mike Vick. that’s the scam.
Not sure why people continue to hate on one of the few players who truly loves playing the game. He gives his all 100% of the time and if that means he’s gonna have fun with it, than so be it.
Cam stated hard work and coaching won the game. Yup, a scam.
unwatchable because the panthers will blow them out?
Broncos star studded mercenary team vs Panthers homegrown nobodies. The team that has the OL playing that day will win.
just watched the jim schwartz video — interesting what run plays colts played w/ peyton, izr, ozr, draw
But somebody told me you cant be successful with only a couple run plays….
Jesus Christ I love Schwartz.
I’m excited to have a guy on D who can take his personality and football acumen and have those both be positive qualities that he passes along to his players.
After watching him holding court, I’d run through a brick wall. And I’m an OL by trade. And it’s not just bullshit bravado, it’s incredible X’s and O’s too.
That was straight up football porn for me.
I must retire to the fainting room now.
I cant wait for your full break down of his defense
So please scratch Rashad Johnson off of the free agents I’d like to sign. That dude was putrid in covering / tackling last night.
[…] rushed through the Jim Schwartz video post because I wanted you to be able to watch those videos without having to also deal with a bunch of […]
Looks like this is what was missing when we ran the Wide-9 before. All we had was a DL coach (Washburn), but as J. Schwartz explains it, it’s a total rush package. You have to combine your coverage concepts with your rush based on the oppponent. I doubt that was done here.
Yep pretty much, Castillo had no clue how to combine the coverage with the rush because he hadnt developed it like Schwartz did
Or because you know, he was an offensive line coach….
