I Love Jim Schwartz

Instead of my yapping, let’s all go get smarter by listening to Professor Jim Schwartz.

2 great videos on the Wide-9 and his thoughts on defense

Great stuff.

I’ll discuss some of it later. Just go watch them for now.

*****

I posted some draft notes from the Shrine Game over at ScoutsNotebook.

It is very possible I wrote about a guy named Vern(on).

    Great hire!

  2. 2 Dave said at 11:51 AM on January 24th, 2016:

The thing with Schwartz is that unless he gets another shot at a head coaching gig, he’s probably going to be here for a while. Look at how long he was DC for the Titans and how successful they were on that side of the ball. Follow that up with the Lions and Bills defense success, it would be a shocker if he ever was fired for performance as DC. He has proven to be successful with a myriad of players over a long period of time. I am very excited with him here.

  3. 3 iceberg584 said at 11:58 AM on January 24th, 2016:

Plus, he must realize that he has young talent here. If things shake out correctly, this could be a top 5, 10 defense for the next several years.

  4. 4 Fufina said at 12:08 PM on January 24th, 2016:

Needs a special outside rusher to make the defense go from good to great. Curry probably plays DT on 3rd down with Cox, and Graham and Barwin are good (but not great) outside guys.

Think we will be in that ranked in 5-15 range depending on injuries and how we adjust to the new scheme in the first year.

Schwartz is such a charismatic guy that i think he will get another HC chance. yes teams focus on Offensive coaches currently and Detroit suffered with poor discipline and failed to contend with some elite talent (megatron+Suh) they had available to them but that organisation has struggled to build consistently for decades and i think with time people will forgive them more.

  5. 5 Patrick said at 12:41 PM on January 24th, 2016:

I think Schwartz will be a HC again, but one point I think will be important is that Schwartz might be a little selective when it comes to jobs. Its happened a couple of times that coordinators chose to stay in place, and if the rumors about us paying Schwartz very well, i’m guessing that if say the Browns or the Raiders want to hire him in 2 years and they’re still, well a mess,he might rather stay here a year or 2 longer and wait for the right position to open up.

  6. 6 BlindChow said at 1:05 PM on January 24th, 2016:

He’s probably holding out for the Titans’ next HC opening. Couldn’t be more than a couple years from now…

  7. 7 BlindChow said at 11:52 AM on January 24th, 2016:

    From the Senior Bowl notes:

Wilson also had a stronger, thicker build. One concern with Adams, because of his size, is durability. He missed time this year with a broken finger and then had to leave the bowl game after a hit to the head.

Does a thicker build prevent finger and head injuries?

  8. 8 TommyLawlor said at 12:29 PM on January 24th, 2016:

Not specifically, obviously. But the point is that Wilson hasn’t missed an NFL game and Adams couldn’t make it through one FBS season. Some bodies can take a pounding and some can’t.

  9. 9 ACViking said at 12:38 PM on January 24th, 2016:

    T-Law:

    How ’bout this . . .

    Russell Wilson is short.

    Vernon Adams is small.

    Big difference.

  10. 10 BlindChow said at 1:01 PM on January 24th, 2016:

Small sample size for Adams, though. Either way, those aren’t the usual injuries attributed to being small-framed.

  11. 11 Fufina said at 1:44 PM on January 24th, 2016:

Finger injuries can happen to anyone, but i do think smaller QB’s are more likely to get concussions if they are sacked just because the momentum and size difference is bigger.

  12. 12 Dave said at 11:53 AM on January 24th, 2016:

On an unrelated note, I am so glad I upgraded to a commercial John Deere snow blower 5 years ago. We got 31 inches here and my driveway is very large (probably can fit 10 cars) and it still took me less than an hour. Everyone out there still clearing snow, be safe and don’t overdo it.

  13. 13 Greg Richards said at 2:17 PM on January 24th, 2016:

You anywhere near Baltimore? I have 5 bucks and a bag of Cheetos.

  14. 14 Dave said at 2:26 PM on January 24th, 2016:

Nope, Lehigh Valley. If I was closer and it was Cool Ranch Doritos, I’d be there.

  16. 16 TommyLawlor said at 12:30 PM on January 24th, 2016:

She is willing to share me with a good DC.

  17. 17 jpate said at 12:34 PM on January 24th, 2016:

Hearing Schwartz all I think about is how the hell did Andy expect Jaun to know all this when he strapped him with the wide 9.

  18. 18 Fufina said at 12:36 PM on January 24th, 2016:

Ha totally agree, wide 9 needs to be an entire defense philosophy that needs every level of the defense to adjust to it and know how to protect against its weaknesses and exploit its strengths. Juan who had some nice late night chats with JJ (who was not a wide 9 guy at all) was not in a place to make it work

  19. 19 Fufina said at 12:39 PM on January 24th, 2016:

Not that i love it as a 1st and 2nd down set unless you are against a Payton type offense. Think it makes sense on 3rd down but it will naturally put so much stress on your safeties that things will break down if you expect them to own a run gap and still honor the pass.

  20. 20 jpate said at 1:36 PM on January 24th, 2016:

Exactly and even after making it a whole defensive philosophy it took Schwartz experience and time to make learn the weaknesses, make adjustments and fine-tune it to make it effective.

  21. 21 jaws80 said at 11:58 PM on January 24th, 2016:

think Reid really wanted to create a Washburn defense, start with the wide-9 and the rest fits in. Washburn’s personality couldn’t be a coordinator and did not want to be. And hard to find an experienced D coach, top candidate, that would be willing to work under Washburn, have their D dictated by Washburn.

  22. 22 Buge Halls said at 3:11 PM on January 24th, 2016:

And the Wide 9 needs good linebackers to fill in the center – a position Andy Reid never seemed to be able to fill or even care about.

My favorite quote from the videos: “Javon Kearse was a blistering bitch off the edge.” Awesome.

  25. 25 ACViking said at 12:46 PM on January 24th, 2016:

An oddly complimentary term for a football player.

  26. 26 Patrick said at 12:48 PM on January 24th, 2016:

A perfectly good reason to love Jim Schwartz though!

  27. 27 Pennguino said at 1:34 PM on January 24th, 2016:

    Yea it’s pretty good.
Funny part for me is I use Blister as a nickname for POS coworkers.
Blister….Shows up after the work’s been done.
You have the grinders that push through and just keep cranking. Then ole blister comes waltzing in about 10 minutes before the deadline or project completion. Boss walks in and rewards everyone there. Even ole blister.

  28. 28 P_P_K said at 1:37 PM on January 24th, 2016:

  31. 31 Dragon_Eagle said at 1:10 PM on January 24th, 2016:

Best DC hire since JJ. And its obvious even though he hasn’t coached a single game as an Eagle.

  32. 32 P_P_K said at 1:39 PM on January 24th, 2016:

Not intending to hijack the thread, but here’s a game day question: Is it legit to root for the Pats to win the SB so we can brag the Eagles ruined their perfect season?

  33. 33 Fufina said at 1:42 PM on January 24th, 2016:

I like teams that make history and there is part of me that would prefer we lost the Super Bowl to the best dynasty/QB/HC in football history without a shadow of a doubt, and since i dislike Denver and Carolina and hate the Cards it might be least worse outcome for me.

  34. 34 Bert's Bells said at 4:55 PM on January 24th, 2016:

I also like the idea of Eli having more SB than Peyton.

But I do like the Patriots losing three SuperBowls too. Puts them up there with the Bills.

  35. 35 Fufina said at 4:59 PM on January 24th, 2016:

Not really… SB losses hurt less when you have 4 in the bank.

  36. 36 Bert's Bells said at 5:01 PM on January 24th, 2016:

    yeah….

  37. 37 Dragon_Eagle said at 1:44 PM on January 24th, 2016:

    Patri*ts are evil. No.

  38. 38 Joe Minx said at 2:52 PM on January 24th, 2016:

They didn’t. The Broncos beat them first.

  39. 39 P_P_K said at 4:56 PM on January 24th, 2016:

You guys are all right. My hatred of the Pats must have screwed up my memory and I forgot all about the Broncos game.

  40. 40 Buge Halls said at 3:14 PM on January 24th, 2016:

No, because the Broncos beat them the week before the Eagles did. So the Broncos ruined the perfect season that never was, and will hopefully end their playoff run today..

  41. 41 RobNE said at 3:29 PM on January 24th, 2016:

    If they were 15-1 maybe

  42. 42 izzylangfan said at 1:57 PM on January 24th, 2016:

Unbelievable videos. I guy who can think like that and has Cox, Graham, Barwin, and Logan – even if we can’t sign Curry he is going to put a pass rush and defense together. And I think he has an attitude that will give the defense an identity. I’m incorrigible because I’m getting excited for 2016.

  43. 43 jaws80 said at 11:51 PM on January 24th, 2016:

dont even say “can’t sign Curry” – that is my biggest fear this off season, would care more about losing Curry than Bradford. Think Curry could be special with an attack defense.

  44. 44 Aaron said at 2:07 PM on January 24th, 2016:

    bb8

  45. 45 DJH said at 2:12 PM on January 24th, 2016:

How is an attacking, aggressive D going to work with the offense Pederson is going to install? A conservative, ball security, low scoring offense.

Andy’s Philly offenses tended to score quickly forcing teams to throw. Then JJ defense could rush the passer relentlessly.

I think an aggressive defense and conservative offense is a good match. We’ll win a lot of low scoring games in theory.

  46. 46 Greg Richards said at 2:16 PM on January 24th, 2016:

I wouldn’t assume that Pederson is going to be that conservative.

  47. 47 BobSmith77 said at 5:32 PM on January 24th, 2016:

Can’t see Bradford suddenly becoming a bombardier down the field.

Still needs to throw to someone too. Only real answer on the roster right now is Agholor.

  48. 48 Dragon_Eagle said at 3:09 PM on January 24th, 2016:

Or spend a lot of time playing catch up.

  49. 49 jaws80 said at 11:49 PM on January 24th, 2016:

Hope Pederson continues the Chief’s offense proclivity for few interceptions. Focus on few interceptions, nothing special, give the defense enough of a rest, then let the defense attack, create turnovers and good field position. Very, very happy with a Pederson/Schwartz combo, with Pederson being the big overview guy, the “community/player/staff relationship” guy with control of a conservative, few turnover offense.

I would be very unhappy with a Pederson offense (or what i think a Pederson offense might be) and a read/react, second fiddle to the offense type of defense.

SEND TOMMY TO THE SENIOR BOWL!
    Fellow Igglesblitzarians –

It’s the time of year when our very own Tommy Lawlor stumbles out of the tobacco stalks of North Carolina on his annual trek to the Senior Bowl to scout draft prospects, haze Bryce Petty, trail a weaving Rex Ryan in his rental car, and initiate his very own power struggle with Howie Roseman on the sideline.

This will be his fifth trip to the nation’s premiere all-star event where representatives from the Eagles will scrutinize the country’s top senior talent in hopes of unearthing the next maddening disappointment (SEE Hunt, Tony). Like other bloggers, Tommy will patrol the sidelines during the practices and post his observations, but unlike the rest he won’t have the luxury of expensing his trip. That’s where we come in…

CHALLENGE: If we can generate 45 donations (one for every point Tampa/Detroit scored on us), I will donate $200 ($1 for every crushing third down drop!). Any donation, large or small, will go a long way toward helping Tommy out. Think of it as buying him a beer in exchange for his unique, on the-ground reporting that we all enjoy so much.

To participate in this year’s Senior Bowl Challenge simply click on the “Donate” button along the right hand banner of the page (underneath the “Blog Roll”), give any amount, and then reply to this comment. No need to post how much you gave, simply that you have. And if you’re unable to donate at this time, please consider an up-vote so we can get eyeballs on this son of a gun.

Hard to believe that just last year we were looking for an OT and a CB. Now we just need an OT and a CB, QB, WR, TE, GM, mascot, JUGS machine, and a defensive philosophy…

    Fly Iggles Fly!

The Falcons hired Cowboys’ DBs coach as their pass defense coordinator. Sounds like his contract was up. Always nice to see the Cowgirls lose good coaches. Interesting thing is that Raheem Morris, who was thier pass defense coordinator last year, will now be the WRs coach(replacing Terry Robiskie who was hired as OC by TEN) and passing offense coordinator. So, it’s not just the Eagles who move coaches from one side of the ball to the other. Morris doesn’t have any previous experience on the offensive side of the ball. I do remember that Mike Nolan, who has been DC for a ton of teams, spent one year as WRs coach for Baltimore. In addition, Eric Mangini who’s background is as a DBs coach before becoming a DC and HC spent a year as TEs coach for the 49ers.

Not expecting miracles out of this defense next year. Just would be nice to see a relatively competent defensive unit all season long for the first time in severa years. Not one that notably gets weaker as the season progresses and gives up passing yards like some beginner-level video game defense at times.

The one area I could see taking a dip is the amount of turnovers the defense causes. One (and really only area) that this defense was consistent at doing generally under Davis even with personnel who I thought were a bit lacking in causing turnovers especially INTs.

  115. 115 BobSmith77 said at 6:39 PM on January 24th, 2016:

I don’t think he is an ‘idiot’ and could easy see everyone except 1-2 of these players being gone especially since it is a new coach and staff.

  116. 116 FairOaks said at 6:10 PM on January 24th, 2016:

Looking at it… Bradford he thinks due to cap reasons (possible, though a longer-term contract would probably leave a smaller first-year cap hit making other moves possible). Sproles because he thinks we should be in rebuilding mode, and a team would give us a draft pick (sorta doubtful, and if we have a young QB, veteran receivers can be quite helpful); Huff because of the rumor garbage the other day (seriously doubt we let Huff go); Sanchez because Pederson will prefer Daniels (this seems likely to me); Tobin because Pederson will have “his guys” in that slot (er… we’d need tons of new OL talent to push Tobin off the roster); Thornton because he’s a 3-4 guy; maybe cap reasons too (we’d want him in a 4-3 — only question is can we afford him); DeMeco because he’s a cap casualty (possible); Thurmond because of affordability, and says it will be a big loss (reasonably likely); Smith (because he took Roseman’s comment to mean Smith was a mistake; given he has guaranteed $$$ no way we let him go now); Hart since he’s a 3-4 guy (this is possible but not before final cutdowns).

  117. 117 The original AG said at 6:16 PM on January 24th, 2016:

I think it’s too early to give up on Smith. Sproles is still huge for special teams and as a weapon.

I don’t think we need to rebuild, and I do like a lot of the talent we have. Fix the OLine and I think we’re back in the mix.

  118. 118 FairOaks said at 6:29 PM on January 24th, 2016:

If we don’t keep Bradford we are likely in a bit of a rebuild mode. Losing Thurmond would create a hole as well… we don’t have much in the backup area at safety.

Agree with you on Smith… only way he gets released is if there are so many other good players on the roster he can’t even make it as a backup, since cutting him saves zero cap. He hasn’t really been given a chance yet. Agree on Sproles too.

  125. 125 FairOaks said at 6:19 PM on January 24th, 2016:

It was called incomplete so I don’t think it affected Patriots time outs (though it gave them a TO before the 4th down play).

Little chance of success, but it just cost them a challenge they were not going to need and a timeout they might (though they also get to rest before the 4th down play, so the TO might have been worth it anyways).

  132. 132 FairOaks said at 6:33 PM on January 24th, 2016:

There have been receivers in the general area for most all of them. The refs will give QBs a fair bit of latitude when the defenders affect the pass (like has been on all of them). Brady does a better job of getting balls near receivers than Eli does, and Eli doesn’t get called for it either.

  133. 133 Kohlhaas said at 6:34 PM on January 24th, 2016:

Sorry. Common sense says that when he’s throwing it and he’s almost horizontal to the ground, then it should be intentional grounding, regardless of “how close” it was to a receiver.

  134. 134 FairOaks said at 6:42 PM on January 24th, 2016:

They used to have an “in the grasp” rule, but anyone who watched Cunningham play, that rule was even more frustrating. So, as long as you get a pass in the general vicinity of a receiver, it’s allowed (as is intentional grounding outside of the pocket) even though you know the QB is just throwing it away.

So I’ve had a question for a while and maybe someone who knows more about football can answer this for me. Earlier the announcers said that Bruce Arians scripts his first 30 plays, and it reminded me of how Andy was notorious for scripting his first 15 plays. The thinking being that they would figure out how the defenses would play certain situations.

If everyone knows you script X number of plays though, why wouldn’t the D coordinators just prepare for that, and after X plays have been run, switch up the defenses they were calling? It seems like you’re setting yourself up for false positives by scripting.

  215. 215 Greg Richards said at 8:43 PM on January 24th, 2016:

Here’s the thing there: They have a HC whose background is on the defensive side. Steve Wilks is their asst HC/secondary. The asst HC is arguably above the DC on the food chain. It’s unknown how much he contributes on the defensive side. Now, the same argument could be applied to Pederson as Reid is an offensive guy and they had an asst HC/WRs coach in David Culley. Regardless of each guys’ merits and contributions on their side of the field, success as a coordinator does not necessarily equate to having the demeanor and tools necessary to be a good HC. The Eagles obviously thinks Pedersn has them and McDermott doesn’t. At least not to the same degree.

  216. 216 ACViking said at 9:15 PM on January 24th, 2016:

The reasoning behind the argument that Rivera has been carrying McDermott — even though McD calls the plays on game day — would seem to apply to every coordinator in the NFL (depending which side their HC coordinated).

Save for Reid and Harbaugh . . . every HC was either an OC or DC before taking over their team.

Under the Rivera Doctrine, that would seem to mean that the performance of every OC or DC (depending on the HC’s background) is an inflated illusion.
    _______________

Regarding Pederson v. McD . . . totally agree with you.

  217. 217 Greg Richards said at 9:32 PM on January 24th, 2016:

Basically unless you are on the inside and have done actual interviews with the candidates and other people around the league or have first-hand experience with them, you don’t know enough to have an educated opinion. Not that that should stop anyone from offering one.

  218. 218 Anders said at 2:36 AM on January 25th, 2016:

Well in 99% of the cases hiring the hot DC/OC who works under a HC from the same side, does not work and in the case of the McDermott, we know he is a bad DC and know Rivera is a great DC.

  219. 219 Dragon_Eagle said at 11:00 AM on January 25th, 2016:

I wasn’t suggesting McD is ready for HC, but I do believe he’s not getting enough credit because of Rivera. He was well trained here by JJ and knows his X’s and O’s. His major failing here (more so than the redzone issues), and it would have been difficult for anyone following JJ, was in leadership skills – the key factor for being a HC. Until McD demonstrates better leadership skills, he’s not HC material.

For example, I think you can make the case that McD was a better, and perhaps significantly so, coordinator than Doug Pederson. Certainly Sean has more experience. But I would take Doug as HC over Sean for “emotional intelligence” which is just a fancy facet of leadership.

    What QB has Brady/Brees/Rodgers upside?

  236. 236 xeynon said at 8:33 PM on January 24th, 2016:

No one’s saying finding that guy will be easy. But we’ve got to keep trying. Committing long-term to Bradford is the NFL equivalent of the Sixers committing long term a few years back to Andre Iguodala and Elton Brand as their centerpiece players. Good enough to get you to the dance. Not nearly good enough to get you a date with the Prom Queen.

  237. 237 Dave said at 8:38 PM on January 24th, 2016:

    Says you

  238. 238 xeynon said at 8:46 PM on January 24th, 2016:

Bradford’s never won a playoff game. He’s never even made the playoffs despite playing in crappy divisions his entire career. I think I’m on pretty solid ground in doubting him.

  239. 239 Dave said at 9:07 PM on January 24th, 2016:

I agree. Watching him play this year, he never made his recievers hands better. He never made the lineman block better. He never made DeMarco actually hit the holes. He never made the defense stop allowing 3rd down conversions and touchdowns. He never made the kicker not miss field goals and extra points. There is obviously nothing special about him. If there were, he would never had to rely on his teammates, he would have carried them on his back.

  240. 240 xeynon said at 9:21 PM on January 24th, 2016:

He didn’t get much help from his teammates. But he also threw plenty of bad picks, took plenty of bad sacks, and missed plenty of open receivers all on his own this year. When he was at his best, it was against bad defenses, and he didn’t even consistently play well against those. I never saw him make the kind of plays you need to make to actually contend for a title. He’s a middling starting QB. If he was on a cheap rookie contract and we’d only be rolling with him for another year or two to see if he’ll improve, I’d be fine with that. But committing 15% of the salary cap to a guy like that in the hopes that he finds another gear is lunacy IMO.

  241. 241 Dave said at 9:25 PM on January 24th, 2016:

Many, including myself, strongly disagree with your assessment of his play and his skill set.

  242. 242 FairOaks said at 9:31 PM on January 24th, 2016:

I don’t remember all that many bad picks of the bad-decision sort at all. Virtually none, other than maybe one or two early. Some early picks were due to his inaccuracy, something which went away late in the season. He took some sacks… slightly more than league average there. He did miss plenty of receivers.

I thought he played consistently well the last seven games, and still steadily improving, so I guess that is in the eye of the beholder — probably why I do want to keep him. If your impression of him was set early in the season, no changing that, I guess.

15% of the cap would be lunacy, but that would be $23 million. I don’t like more than 10% myself, but QB cap numbers across the league are set to take a massive jump this next year, so there is something of a market value being set. In a long-term deal, the first years are often a smaller cap hit as well, so it could be structured to not be too awful in any one year even if the numbers seem high.

On the other hand, Tom Condon has generally gotten team-unfriendly contracts for QBs, so that is a concern. Basically a Condon-Roseman battle there, and I’ll be rooting for Howie. A lot may depend on the willingness to franchise him.

  243. 243 FairOaks said at 8:39 PM on January 24th, 2016:

Not sure that Bradford has shown that INT propensity — but he’s never shown how he plays under more pressure (one reason I really wanted to make the playoffs this year).

So yes, it’s still a projection for Bradford. If Bradford’s ceiling is how Palmer played in the regular season (not this game), it’s still good. Reasonable people can disagree on that, of course — very little has been proven.

  244. 244 xeynon said at 8:43 PM on January 24th, 2016:

Bradford hasn’t shown Palmer’s propensity for big plays either.

My point was that it’s extremely difficult to win with a guy who’s a fringe top-10 QB. And I think if he stays healthy that’s basically his ceiling. I’d rather cycle through a few more bad QBs looking for the right one than waste time on a mediocre one.

  245. 245 Will:↑↑↓↓←→←→BA said at 8:44 PM on January 24th, 2016:

Hard to have big plays when your OL cant block and your WRs lead the NFL in drops

  246. 246 xeynon said at 8:53 PM on January 24th, 2016:

He hasn’t played his entire career with the 2015 Eagles. He’s never been better than mediocre. His best stretches of play to this point have been somewhat above average, and he’s often been worse than that and has had health problems. I’m of the opinion that making a franchise QB-level commitment to a mediocre QB is one of the worst things an NFL team can do for its long-term competitiveness and that’s exactly what we’d be doing by re-signing Bradford to the type of contract he reportedly wants. Just because the Redskins are going to be dumb and do it with Kirk Cousins this offseason doesn’t mean we have to follow suit.

  247. 247 FairOaks said at 8:58 PM on January 24th, 2016:

His career has been with teams much much worse than the 2015 Eagles. On both sides of the ball. He’s also had a new OC basically every season of his career (and with a defensive head coach) — he’s never settled into a system, which basically every single top QB has had the chance to do. That type of thing will sabotage a QB’s numbers and results. And yet he was still playing quite well by the end of the season (balanced by an awful start to the season).

I don’t think you can base his true production in a more stable coaching environment based on anything you’ve actually seen him do. His entire career has been the “adjusting to a new system” mode, where almost all QBs (including the tippy top ones) are not as good right away.

  248. 248 FairOaks said at 8:52 PM on January 24th, 2016:

Nope, and that is very true. Bradford was getting better about throwing the ball down the field — the YPA was creeping up all year — but that is somewhere you are projecting that Bradford will improve from what we’ve seen.

He did seem to be getting better all through the year, so if you are sold on him, you are counting on that to continue (as opposed to the end of the year just being a hot streak). I.e. you are hoping he improves to a no-question top-10 guy.

I can understand not wanting to pay big for that hope. But I can also understand not wanting to base hopes on a rookie in a year which might be more Ponder types — you swing and miss here, that search can easily take 10 or more years.

  249. 249 RC5000 said at 9:07 PM on January 24th, 2016:

It’s extremely difficult to find top 5-7 QB and I don’t see Lurie being patient with just a relatively bad QB. It’s just not like him although there are limits on Bradford’s contract. They could go with Daniel but KC still preferred Alex Smith. It’s easy to say I want the next Tom Brady or Drew Brees but you have to have a QB in the meantime.

I think Bradford can make big plays like Palmer given a better offense. He’s right there with him if he stays healthy but again he needs better teammates and offense.

  250. 250 xeynon said at 9:15 PM on January 24th, 2016:

Yes, we do need a QB in the meantime. But committing to Bradford for, say, 4 years/$72 mill. prolongs that meantime. That will mean four years not quite getting there with a guy who’s not quite good enough, during which time we won’t be taking swings on finding a guy who could be a top 5-7 QB.

  251. 251 FairOaks said at 9:17 PM on January 24th, 2016:

It all depends on how much of that is guaranteed — that is what sinks the team, not so much the overall dollar amount. I definitely would prefer a deal we can get out of after two years, without long-term cap damage. I’m not sure that Bradford has shown enough to warrant any more than that. Lots will depend on the contract he’s willing to sign, naturally. And we need to draft a QB either way.

  252. 252 xeynon said at 9:25 PM on January 24th, 2016:

Yeah, the guaranteed money is the big thing. I have a feeling he’s going to want quite a bit of that though.

  362. 362 FairOaks said at 10:02 PM on January 24th, 2016:

They have generally depended on their defense, and it’s great this year. The other big thing is that they were supposed to have a suspect OL, but it looks like they figured that out as the year went along — if you give Cam all day to throw (and a good running game), it’s going to be tough.

Will be *very* interesting to see if Denver can apply pressure, and see if things look different if they do.

  370. 370 Patrick said at 10:07 PM on January 24th, 2016:

That offense is all Cam. I mean, Olsen and Stewart is great and their interior OL is very good, but overall that offense have weaknesses, but Cam is just so good and such a terrible matchup nightmare. Obviously Shula has done a good job, but you can’t do the same with other QB in the league. An entire scheme build around a truly unique skill set from a great, great player.

Add that to a Ron Rivera defense, with some incredibly talented players in Short, Kuechly, Davis, Norman, alongside the overall very disciplined and well coached principles of Rivera and you have a SB team.

A great QB and a at worst very good defense, thats how you win a SB.
